@dystriplica and i were trying to decide on a $$ to dead space credits conversion, and we were comparing a small scuba tank replacement to the small air can in the ds store (not a perfect comparison but whatever), which was like essentially 1000 credits = ~$100 (for a cheap tank on am*zon).

the problem is that the prices are fairly inconsistent so like, plasma cutter ammo is 1200 credits or something, which feels like idk, "ammo" (mining equipment ig) would seem like it ought to be less than an air can (altho maybe not idk). the obvious reason is that y'know, it's a video game and the prices don't have to be rational to the crew on the ishimura they have to be rational to the player lol, but Whatever

anyway i ended up on the wikipedia page for company stores for totally non-dead space related reasons but i was thinking like. this makes way more sense than credits just being the universal currency tbh.

like yea that makes way more sense to me than credits just being what everyone everywhere uses, and i mean i have to wonder if they originally intended for this to be the way it worked but like, at the same time the valor has credits on it too so even if it was ever intended to be that credits were a CEC thing specifically, the game itself doesn't actually support that lol, but again maybe that's for game design reasons more than world building or whathaveyou.

also ds2 contradicts this pretty strongly obvs, but ds2 also has the store fully changing your entire outfit while you're still in it instead of just clipping new pieces onto it so i don't think they were holding themselves to 100% fidelity to the logic of the first game lol

idk thinking about how sometimes you have to show up for people you aren't that close to, because sometimes you're just the person who's there. sometimes you invite a new friend to a party and end up having to sit with them through a panic attack. sometimes you run into an acquaintance on their worst day and they need to talk about what happened. sometimes someone is crying in a stairwell and you're the only one around to ask if they're okay. and none of this is "trauma dumping" or whatever the fuck it's just being there for people because you're the one in the room with them.
