SECTION ONE – Your Final Major Project (guide 150 words)

What is the title of your Project? What will you work towards producing and what is your proposed end point? Explain how this relates to your work and ideas from the Pathway Stage and how it extends your knowledge, understanding and creative ability.

As I have explained in my introduction, being in lockdown for so long has admittedly been a struggle, and it’s had a much bigger impact on my creativity and self-motivation than I had anticipated. I came into lockdown thinking art would be a welcome distraction, when it’s turned out to be the complete opposite. I had no interest in doing any of the things I had proposed to do at home, resenting my ideas even before they had properly taken off. For quite a few weeks, I didn’t do much in the way of art.

This was until I decided to download Blender, a free, yet surprisingly high-quality, piece of CAD software. The last time I used any CAD software was back when I completed my GCSEs, where I created virtual models of my product designs. Although I distinctly remember taking to and enjoying the process, it’s an area I haven’t delved further into since. After seeing some examples of artworks made using Blender, I was (for the first time in a long while) eager to give it a go, and thus have begun following a beginners tutorial series on YouTube, with the aim of developing an understanding of the software, meaning I can go on to create 3D illustrations and animations.

I therefore plan to document the progress of my 3D modelling skills throughout this FMP, whilst also developing an idea of how I may utilise the software to create striking visual accompaniments to the music of experimental rock band Mr Bungle. These may come in the form of stand-alone illustrations, posters, short animated gifs, publication advertisements, record covers, or any other area where artwork is needed to promote the band.

What are the influences, starting points and contextual references and why are they relevant to your ideas? The initial starting point for this project came out of wanting to learn more in the way of 3D modelling. To do this, I will be using online resources such as www.blenderartists.org, as well as YouTube, where there are some brilliant in depth tutorials, such as the one I am currently working on, a donut modelling tutorial by CGI professional Andrew Price, aka BlenderGuru. This particular series, which is around 5 hours 30 mins long, has been incredibly helpful, introducing me to so many techniques, tools and processes, covering modelling, sculpting, colouring, texturing, lighting, rendering, and even animating. I aim to go more in-depth on some areas of Blender during this project, such as sculpting, depending on which process is most suitable to realise my designs.

The purpose to the animation that I’ve made, is to create a possible insight as to what the second season of ‘Final Space’  may provide as an experience from a fans point of view. Research:

While initially starting my project I did some in depth research into the three main animations that I wanted to take influence from and had a interest in their story and design styles. This was my main source of secondary research for the  character, background and general projects style, although when it came to creating the character’s body designs, I sourced some reference images from the internet. These helped me form more original appearances in comparison to the season one versions of the characters.

Throughout this project I have conducted secondary research to help my initial designs and sketches done on paper, then later I still used them but took more influence from some reference images for clothing. Once I had got past the stage of character design and creation, I conducted a survey where people could voluntarily fill out and provide me with feed back in the format of Primary research. The main reason why I did it in this way was because it gave me a more realistic point of view, plus from this perspective I could see what a random person/stranger would initially see. 

The combination of research and the whole creative process worked hand in hand throughout my major decisions. This can be seen as an example when I conducted my first primary research survey, and from that was the development of characters and the roles within the animation. Then I conducted a second survey asking for people’s initial thoughts on specific effects showcased in images I displayed. To sum up my thoughts on the effectiveness of my research, I believe my techniques to be useful for the progression and development of my project throughout, especially my method for gathering primary research and utilising it to improve my work. 

Reflecting on what I have learnt from this project and looking forwards to how I will conduct my research for future projects, I will be using similar methods and techniques to help influence and shape the creative design process. I now know it is essential to construct some form of primary research earlier on in projects, as the results will inform any alterations from the feedback I would of received and then at a later date there will be  less major changes needed.

Problem Solving:

Throughout the duration of the project I have come across multiple problems, which have differed from major issues to minor. I then found ways to solve them or even in some cases have had to work around it to create some sort of solution and alternative method to complete tasks. However, though having to deal with these issues is not ideal, it has been of benefit at times. In terms of learning from issues after they’ve been resolved, I would not have learnt how to fix a specific error that I made or that occurred so then in the future I can easily avoid encountering it again at a later date.  

By dealing with these obstacles, it has taught me how to adapt though sometimes my own mistakes. For example I came across an issue when using the puppet tool to animate a characters limbs, hands and fingers everything was working up until I applied pins to the fingers. They became significantly distorted when using other tools like position and rotation to animate the hand as a whole. In terms of tackling the problem that I’ll encounter with future projects, I will be more prepared if it is a reoccurring similar problem and likewise when it’s a new issue that I’ve not dealt with prior to then.  

Planning and production:

I believe that my planning for each stage of the project was fairly well thought through and that allowed me to plan ahead for each week. My time was managed primarily through a time schedule, which I made to help me plot tasks throughout the timetabled amount of weeks provided for the project. These tasks that I laid out gave me small milestones to work towards and from that reduced the work load on each stage of the production, making it more manageable.

In my future projects I would like to have a more adaptable planning scheme, as even though my current one for this project worked and gave me the knowledge of what tasks I needed to complete within the up coming weeks, there was a way to easily change parts if I skipped some tasks or needed to gain some extra time in certain tasks. In addition to this I will strive to apply a new possible aspect to the time scheme design, by adding a progression bar for each stage maybe and then that delivers more information on where I’m at in the project. Apart from these minor factors I would say that my planning overall benefited my workflow, and therefore increased the productivity for the creation process.

Practical Skills:

This project has given me the opportunity to explore new techniques and then lead on to me gaining skills from it. I was able to learn these from source videos on ‘YouTube’ that displayed tutorials on how to conduct a certain effect or use a  tool in a different way to what I had done previously. An example of how I explored a new technique is when I wanted to make the text 3D, I asked for one of my fellow students assistance with it, as they had knowledge on how to perform this effect from previous work they had done. I could then learn how to do it from their instructions and guidance and now because of this I learnt a new skill within Adobe After Effects.

To sum up my experience into looking into new techniques and methods on how to simplify an effect or give a certain one some extra flare, or factors which would enhance the visual experience, I believe that I’ve made steps to improving my understanding of animating and the application of already existing skills to a new format. By doing so I have increased my knowledge on subjects within animation as a whole. With future projects I’ll be aiming to expand my skill set like I did whilst working on and developing this one.

Evaluation:

My belief is that I’ve been quite fluent with the evaluation side of reflecting on each decision, whilst working on the project. I made a survey which not only provided me with a source of primary research, but gave me constructive criticism on which I could base my evaluation and assets designs, background designs, sound and visual effects. I think that reflection on my work has made me acutely aware of any mistakes I made and how to move forward to the next development of it, and this is all done through evaluating the process of the project progression at different points.

Presentation:

My blog is organised and has clear structure, it is ordered showing a clear progression of my development that I did to assets made in Photoshop and then imported to After Effects, to be implemented into the animation. I also showed the process that I went through to make the characters initially and then the development process to a completed version. Furthermore I displayed references to sources that were used for influences that I had used for character design, this method provided a nice interesting and informative flow to my blog.

In some posts there could have been a bit more clarity with showcasing my thought process. By doing this it would have expanded the possibility of the reader understanding my actions in a more in-depth way. However, in my opinion there were very few posts that contained these traits, so accordingly the presentation still is of a high quality in terms of showcasing initial content, reflection, development and then the final version. So to conclude, I believe that my project as a whole reaches the expectations that I originally had when starting it and has exceeded in some areas, although I acknowledge it may have slightly fallen short in others. I would deem the project a complete success and most importantly a huge and important learning point for me to have expanded my creative knowledge, as well as my skills set and general understanding of the software I have used.

Let It Die is cool, but it’s also cold

It’s hard not to look at Let It Die as some sort of gauge on the viability of the free-to-play model on the greater video game landscape.  While the model has obviously had a lot of success within the realm of mobile games, and even quite a few high profile, big-budget PC games have adopted it after failing to meet their profit goals the old fashioned way, Let It Die still feels like something of an anomaly in the category at large.  It’s the newest game by one of the mediums’ few unequivocal auteurs, Suda51, and his company, Grasshopper Manufacture, and as such, has a sense of gravity to the expectations of quality and artistry that few other free-to-play games have to contend with.  

The microtransaction-heavy model has long been criticized as a just kinda generally shitty business tactic, but in today’s gaming landscape, where even $60 AAA games no longer even have to pretend to be shameful about milking extra dollars out of players hungry for extra skins or blind boxes, making a game that charges you nothing to start it almost even sounds generous.  Thus, Let It Die feels like it’s arriving at exactly the right time, a relatively higher-tier developer embracing and, theoretically, elevating the gaming model at a time where the fluctuating status quo would only require one great game to change hearts and minds.  Unfortunately, despite the surprising degree of success that the game has seen in the last month or so since its release, Let It Die just isn’t a great game.  While it’s overflowing with the wacky and undeniably cool style that Suda51 has been perfecting throughout his career, the core gameplay elements largely left me feeling empty, and reinforced for me the inherent pitfalls of free-to-play gaming.

The beautifully detailed picture that the player sees when she first start up the game is the Tower of Barbs, a monstrous overgrowth of 40 hellish levels erupting from the remains of the orphaned island that used to be South Western Tokyo.  It’s a powerfully rendered image that pairs immaculately with the glitchy 8-bit style embraced in the menu screens.  By the time Uncle Death, a grim reaper wearing 3D glasses, came riding his skateboard in and addressed me as “Senpai,” I was ready to go wherever this game took me.  One of the most frustrating things about the game is that as much as the gameplay pushed me away, the sheer style of it remained omnipresent, urging me to stay in that world.  Every floor of the tower seems to get more fucked-up looking as you go, rewarding progression with a new, weird, environment until that one gets stale.  Every enemy explodes in a high-pressured geyser of gore upon death in their own slightly unique way, and it’s morbidly satisfying, especially after a particularly harrowing encounter.

Every trip to the waiting room of the tower or The Hater Arcade promises some intriguing interaction with one of the surprisingly compellingly rendered characters.  There’s the Mushroom Magistrate, whose vocal performance by Isabelle Fuhrman does a pretty good job of convincing one she really has gone insane from too much mushroom consumption.  Naomi Detox, the teenage arcade attendant, never fails to find new, creative ways to complain about her loser boyfriend between assigning you new quests.  Meigin actually has some pretty useful tips for bettering your performance, as long as you can get past his uber-gamer elitism.  If you care to shell out real money to take the express elevator, the operator, Rin Torai, will share some delightfully awkward rides with you.  None of these characters are much more than the one-note characterizations they seem to be; as far as I’m aware, there are no actual plot arcs or anything involving them.  Regardless, they play their roles well, and serve to color the world of the game in with some remarkable personality.

If I were only grading this game based on its aesthetic impact, it would be a lot more glowing, but unfortunately, there’s also an actual game here, and I have a lot fewer nice things to say about that.  The gameplay of Let It Die has rightfully earned some comparisons to Dark Souls, with its challenging, timed-swing focused melee combat and moveset-containing weapons, not to mention the amount of time between “checkpoints.”  These comparisons do the game no favors, though, as these are all difficult mechanics to pull off in a game without making it unnecessarily frustrating, and while Let It Die might do better than some other Dark Souls clones, it still fails to meet that standard of engaging the player rather than pushing her away with its systems.

Combat takes both skill and practice to get good at, and while getting good certainly is a possibility in this game, it’s not nearly as rewarding as I would have liked it to be.  There is little weight to most of the weapons in the game.  While in Dark Souls, learning how to properly use any given weapon is a matter of spending enough time with it to memorize its moves, there is just a certain feel that you get from it as well, something that comes off as intuition but is really a combination of the careful animation of your character and the tight controls that provides instant feedback on your performance.  That feedback is practically nonexistent in this game.  Each attack animation feels generic and unintuitive, leaving you with nothing but sheer memorization of the amount of time an attack takes and what weapons are preferable for which enemy.  It’s not just boring, it’s straight-up repellant in the early hours of the game.

Going along with the Dark Souls comparisons, this game has a similar lack of a pause button and long stretches of levels to cover before the player can return to their main hub, in this case, an elevator that you can ride down to the waiting room in order to level up, buy necessary upgrades and equipment, chat with characters, or maybe even just stop playing (quitting mid-level is considered a death).  Again, while Dark Souls will use this mechanic in combination with clever level design in order to add to the level of dread and immersion, Let it Die’s levels feel practically procedurally generated, a random series of halls and rooms with repetitious textures and lazily placed enemies, and the feeling that builds as one traverses these maps is less dread as much as just tedium.  The relief that I’d feel as I’d spot an elevator in the distance had little sense of accomplishment mixed in with it; mostly I was just happy that now I could stop.

As relatively “fair” as one-on-one combat can feel, I never really found a way to successfully take on two or three enemies.  Oftentimes I’d find myself stuck in an enclosed room with little environmental factors to kite and isolate enemies with, and the second I’d try to put in a single attack, I’d get pounced on.  In short, these encounters feel basically designed to kill you, and that’s where the insidious free-to-play factor comes in.  When you die, you have a couple options.  You can follow the advice that the title of the game seems to be giving you and simply let your character die - they’ll be reborn as a “hater,” an especially tough enemy that another character can face off against if you return to that spot, and if you defeat them, can be sent out to raid other player’s games (the game has some fairly extensive online features that I never really touched, so I’ll say little about them in this review).

Your other option upon death is given to you by the helpful insurance saleswoman who greets you upon each death - to revive yourself with a death metal, a form of currency in the game that is very nearly only earned by purchasing packs with real money.  In effect, this is essentially the equivalent of putting another coin in the arcade machine, an apt mechanic given the game’s framing device.  This is really what you’re more likely to want to do, as it takes time to level up your characters, and having a well of available, trained fighters becomes more and more important as you progress through the tower.  And I’d almost feel tempted to forgive this if some of the encounters felt a little bit more doable, but as it is, death seems essentially unavoidable.  It feels like a rote exercise, that rather than defeating enemies through sheer skill or adequate leveling, you simply pay to bring your health back up and start back right where you left off; it eliminates the challenge and the reward possible in these encounters, and any time the “risk” side of a risk/reward situation is actual money, it’s going to be pretty hard to convince me to go for that risk.

To the game’s credit, it manages to work its style even into these microtransactions, such as the express elevator, that actually is much nicer looking than the regular elevator, making one feel like she paid for first class.  That it treats such a potentially damning game mechanic with a nod and a wink is legitimately funny, and surprisingly tempting, but the lack of fun I was having with the rest of the game convinced me against it.  This was essentially the main problem I encountered throughout the game: wanting to like it so much more than I did because of the style but finding myself unable due to the lack of substance.  And the style really is nothing to gloss over: Suda51’s artistic success has largely been defined by the aesthetics of excess, and the way that this game manages to balance its stylistic gratuitousness with something approaching tastefulness is an oxymoron that’s a wonder to behold.  If only it felt as inspiring to play as it does to look at.

Tech tools often seem focused on core classroom subjects like math, science, and history. Many forget the wealth of webtools available for classes many schools call ‘Specials’–those that round out a student’s day and prepare them for college and career. Here are three life-skill classes and online tools that make learning more relevant and fun:

1. Physical Education

Coach’s Eye

Coach’s Eye is a top app I heard about from lots of PE teachers. It is one of the leading video platforms to record an athlete’s performance for playback and review. It records the action and then shows the athlete how to, for example, refine a fastball, analyze a golf swing, break down a volleyball serve, improve soccer skills, or demonstrate proper weightlifting form. Recordings are available instantly, can be zoomed and panned, and can be compared with earlier videos of the student’s action. Users can draw lines, arrows, or any freehand marks right on the video, as well as add audio commentary and slo-mo. The results can be shared via SMS, YT, and FB.

LifeSaver

LifeSaver is a free online simulation of a life-threatening occurrence where you (as the viewer) become the only one around who can help. You are asked questions and prompted to take the next step. Your answers play out on the simulation so you can see what happens based on your choices.

The video is powerful, professional, and pulls the viewer in as a critical part of the emergency.

2. Art

Lunapic

Lunapic is an intuitive way to add filters, borders, effects, text, drawings, animations, and more to existing images. Personalizing freely-available public domain images is a great way for students to use pictures to communicate exactly what they want to say.

When students use existing art rather than draw their own (though Lunapic does offer a blank canvas if students want to start from scratch), take the opportunity to discuss copyrights and plagiarism as it applies to artistic works.

Canva

1.8 million users have created over 15 million designs using the free Canva and it’s one million+ design templates (including font schemes, stock photographs, backgrounds, and illustrations (some free, some fee) to create cards, fliers, posters, newsletters, infographics, and more. These are often free with some fee-based pieces. Drag and drop project parts to personalize the design. Edit photos using preset filters or advanced photo editing tools like brightness, contrast, saturation, tint, and blur. Save as a high-quality image or a printable PDF. Canva provides lots of graphic design video tutorials for even the most basic skill level. These are great for Middle School and High School students, as well as teachers.

Canva for education features 17+ lesson plans from the leaders in tech ed. You can even sign in through Google Apps for Education. Canva not only works on iPads but desktops and laptops.

Pivot Animator

Pivot Animator is a simple free downloaded program (though some find it less than intuitive) that enables students to build animated stick figures and export them as a GIF or an AVI file without any knowledge of Flash animation. Once the animated figure is drawn, students can add backgrounds and other figures to communicate a wide variety of ideas.

Pivot Animator only works on Windows. If you have another platform, try Draw a Stickman (well-suited for elementary school ages)

3. Music

SmartMusic

I teach technology, so I asked musician friend Lawrence Auble, what he uses for tutoring. His recommendation: Smart Music. It’s one of the 2014 category award winners by School and Band Orchestra magazine and the industry standard for teaching band, string, and vocal of all ages and skill levels. The app gives subscribers unlimited access to SmartMusic’s extensive library of over fifty method books, nearly 50,000 skill building exercises, and 22,000+ solo and ensemble titles by major publishers.

It is available on PCs and Macs as well as iPads.

Pro Metronome

Once students have mastered the basics of keyboarding and are ready to concentrate on speed, it becomes all about rhythm, pacing, and consistency. Metronomes are invaluable for those purposes. There are many digital metronomes but Pro Metronome (free with some fee-based options) stands out. It is an iOS app, and starts immediately upon activation (like iTalk does). Since I don’t use it to practice singing or musical instruments, the free version is everything I need. It includes thirteen different metronome tones including a color mode so you can see the beats graphically onscreen, a Pendulum Mode for visual feedback, a voice option for personalization, and is ad-free. Best of all, the beat keeps going, even when you minimize the app, until you close it down.

This is a great tool for every student ready to focus on the touch typing skill level in keyboarding.

GuitarBots

According to the GuitarBots website, “The future of guitar learning starts here.” The app allows the use of either an electric or acoustic guitar, and it employs the tablet or phone’s microphone to hear what the student plays to assess progress.  Awards are given to induce practice and development.  Subscriptions allow the student to dig deeper into the content and features for a greater experience.

Recordings are available instantly, can be zoomed and panned, and can be compared with earlier videos of the student’s action. Users can draw lines, arrows, or any freehand marks right on the video, as well as add audio commentary and slo-mo. The results can be shared via SMS, YT, and FB.

LifeSaver

LifeSaver is a free online simulation of a life-threatening occurrence where you (as the viewer) become the only one around who can help. You are asked questions and prompted to take the next step. Your answers play out on the simulation so you can see what happens based on your choices.

The video is powerful, professional, and pulls the viewer in as a critical part of the emergency.

2. Art

Lunapic

Lunapic is an intuitive way to add filters, borders, effects, text, drawings, animations, and more to existing images. Personalizing freely-available public domain images is a great way for students to use pictures to communicate exactly what they want to say.

When students use existing art rather than draw their own (though Lunapic does offer a blank canvas if students want to start from scratch), take the opportunity to discuss copyrights and plagiarism as it applies to artistic works.

Canva

1.8 million users have created over 15 million designs using the free Canva and it’s one million+ design templates (including font schemes, stock photographs, backgrounds, and illustrations (some free, some fee) to create cards, fliers, posters, newsletters, infographics, and more. These are often free with some fee-based pieces. Drag and drop project parts to personalize the design. Edit photos using preset filters or advanced photo editing tools like brightness, contrast, saturation, tint, and blur. Save as a high-quality image or a printable PDF. Canva provides lots of graphic design video tutorials for even the most basic skill level. These are great for Middle School and High School students, as well as teachers.

Canva for education features 17+ lesson plans from the leaders in tech ed. You can even sign in through Google Apps for Education. Canva not only works on iPads but desktops and laptops.

Pivot Animator

Pivot Animator is a simple free downloaded program (though some find it less than intuitive) that enables students to build animated stick figures and export them as a GIF or an AVI file without any knowledge of Flash animation. Once the animated figure is drawn, students can add backgrounds and other figures to communicate a wide variety of ideas.

Pivot Animator only works on Windows. If you have another platform, try Draw a Stickman (well-suited for elementary school ages)

3. Music

SmartMusic

I teach technology, so I asked musician friend Lawrence Auble, what he uses for tutoring. His recommendation: Smart Music. It’s one of the 2014 category award winners by School and Band Orchestra magazine and the industry standard for teaching band, string, and vocal of all ages and skill levels. The app gives subscribers unlimited access to SmartMusic’s extensive library of over fifty method books, nearly 50,000 skill building exercises, and 22,000+ solo and ensemble titles by major publishers.

It is available on PCs and Macs as well as iPads.

Pro Metronome

Once students have mastered the basics of keyboarding and are ready to concentrate on speed, it becomes all about rhythm, pacing, and consistency. Metronomes are invaluable for those purposes. There are many digital metronomes but Pro Metronome (free with some fee-based options) stands out. It is an iOS app, and starts immediately upon activation (like iTalk does). Since I don’t use it to practice singing or musical instruments, the free version is everything I need. It includes thirteen different metronome tones including a color mode so you can see the beats graphically onscreen, a Pendulum Mode for visual feedback, a voice option for personalization, and is ad-free. Best of all, the beat keeps going, even when you minimize the app, until you close it down.

This is a great tool for every student ready to focus on the touch typing skill level in keyboarding.

GuitarBots

According to the GuitarBots website, “The future of guitar learning starts here.” The app allows the use of either an electric or acoustic guitar, and it employs the tablet or phone’s microphone to hear what the student plays to assess progress.  Awards are given to induce practice and development.  Subscriptions allow the student to dig deeper into the content and features for a greater experience.
