Who’s your County Executive? and other steps to becoming a valuable pain in the ass
I fired off a tweet thread this morning, but I feel like a lot of folks here might benefit from this info, too. Which is: if you want anything to change, from police abolition to getting statues removed to passing local ordinances requiring masks to removing local legislation putting limits on abortion (just for some random examples), you need to get real familiar with your local reps. As in, you need to know who they are, what they do, how they’re elected/appointed, how long they’ve been doing that job, what their history is and how you can pressure them into doing what you want. Using hashtags and sharing links and signal boosting can only do so much. Talking to the people who are actually able to implement the change you want is a huge part that I don’t think gets discussed enough; and although it requires some preliminary work, once you get into the groove it’s surprisingly easy.
First, find out where you live! Which you may think is a stupid step, but —do you live in a city? Are you sure? I live in a city, for example, but I actually live in a township/suburb of that city, not the city proper. (Fortunately due to what I suspect is some white flight-related weirdness, I can still hassle the city proper.) There are entire towns inside of some cities, like West Hollywood and Los Angeles. Double-check; you might be surprised.
Then, find out who’s in charge of said place. There are quite a few people, actually. You probably have a mayor — but they might be called a supervisor. Or you may have a city manager, or executive, or clerk, or all three, or someone else entirely, who’s actually doing the day-to-day running of the place — for instance, while Austin has a mayor, it also has a city manager, and the city manager does WAY more than the mayor does. You also have people at the county/parish level — a county executive is I think the most common term, although sometimes it’s the county clerk, who can have entirely different duties depending on the county. Whatever way it works where you live, find out. While you’re at it, find out who’s in charge of your local elections. Sometimes that’s the county clerk (actually I think it’s almost always the country clerk, but sometimes it’s the county auditor or something weird like that); sometimes they’re elected and sometimes they’re appointed. Find out. Get names, put their contact info in your phone. (More on that later.)
Then, find out who represents you on the city/town council and the county legislature, or whatever they’re called where you are. Finding out what district you’re in can sometimes be hellaciously frustrating; when in doubt, an email to the county or city council can often get you an answer if you provide your address. Also bear in mind that different places have different ways of apportioning council members; sometimes they’re all “at large,” sometimes they’re elected according to districts, sometimes it’s a combination of both. Sometimes (not often I don’t think) they’re not elected at all but appointed by someone. Find out who! And don’t leave out things like school boards and zoning boards and community college boards and anything else you happen upon that has a representative you didn’t know existed. They exist, and I guarantee they’ve got power.
Note: find out who represents you state-wide, too. Often calling the governor isn’t that effective (at least for me, calling Cuomo ain’t gonna do much; if you live in Delaware or Montana or Iowa or somewhere relatively less populous, definitely get your governor’s information), but your state reps are usually pretty eager to talk to constituents, even — and this is really important these days — ones who aren’t of the same party. I’m represented by a GOP state senator, for example, but he ended up voting for this bill that just got signed into law. Most states are bicameral (except Nebraska, heyooo), so you likely have a state senator and a state rep/assemblyman/whatever. Make sure to get info for both. (Unless you live in Nebraska, in which case tell Ernie I said hi.)
Next, find out what the court system looks like where you are. Are your state/county/district/etc judges appointed? Elected? What are their terms? Who’s your District Attorney? Who’s in charge of your Public Defender’s office? (I actually haven’t bothered to look up that myself until today!) What courts handle which offenses in your area? Collect that information.
And what do you do with this info? You put it into your phone contacts, or whatever you use to keep your contacts organized, I dunno, maybe you still use your Wizard from 1992. No judgement. However you do it, put all of these contacts somewhere they’re all together — for example, if you have a letter in your directory that isn’t used much. I have a kind of weird method of organizing my contacts, which is that I put their first and last names (and their handles, if I know them online) in the Firstname field, then the Lastname field I use to say how I know them. So all of my New York-based friends are listed as “NYC, Holly Golightly/moonrivergoddess” or whatever. So for me personally, I just put all my political contacts under “Y” as in “Y do I have to keep pestering you to make you do the right thing.” So a county clerk would be listed like so:
Y, County Clerk Horace Vandergelder
In the “Company” field, I usually put their party and when/if they’re up for election next as well as term length, so Horace would be “Dem, 2020/2024.″ And then I might add any links I thought were helpful as well as notes about, say, what staffer I may’ve talked to or if there’s an important bill coming up etc.
And now you’ve got that information, it’s time to fuckin’ use it. Was there a protest that happened in your area that ended in arrests or violence? Call your mayor, register your displeasure. Call your DA, ask if anyone’s being charged. Call your city council member, ask them what legislation they’d support to end police violence. What do you know that you want them to know? Alternatively, was there a protest in your area that was really great and positive? Call these people; ask if they attended. If they did, offer support for them and say that you want them to follow up with actionable steps. If they didn’t, ask why. (BTW, it’s election season — look at the candidates, too! That state senator I mentioned earlier is retiring this year, and a pretty awesome Democrat is in a good position to get his seat; I’ve started volunteering for him in part because he’s got a history of agitating for police reform and has been regularly attending the protests here.) You can email, too; you’re welcome to c&p form emails, but once you have all these people’s contact info at your fingertips you’d be amazed how easy it’ll be to write something from you, that will be far more effective.
It’s also important to keep a record for yourself of who you’ve talked to, when you talked to them, what they said, if you want to follow up etc. I’ve got a little section of my planner for this; it has dates, names, topics, the works. It’s been really helpful to me over the past few weeks making sure I’m exerting pressure to a variety of people in a variety of positions, not just repeatedly calling one office and leaving the same message over and over again.
But if you really want to, as I put it on twitter, tighten the sphincter of local government, nothing beats face-to-face (or, these days, facetime-to-facetime). And here you’ve got a shitton of options. You can see if a particular politician/government office is taking virtual one-on-one meetings, where you can lobby either your politician or (more likely) one of their staffers to support legislation or policies or whatnot. This is, and I cannot stress it enough, HUGELY EFFECTIVE, especially if you are a demo they don’t often see (aka if you’re not a white Boomer). Local politicians are both desperate for and terrified of an engaged constituency; they want you to care but they’re very much aware that anyone showing up to an office (or a zoom meeting) could make their lives very, very difficult.
If one-on-one isn’t your style, there are also committee meetings, which... holy shit, you would not believe the number of committees there are. Committees for art festivals, committees for transportation, committees for public safety, committees for pretty much everything you can think of and a few I’ll bet you can’t. Noodle around on your councils’ and county’s websites, including their facebook page (nine times out of ten there will be more — and more up-to-date — info on the facebook page) to find out what committees meet when. And here is where your specific priorities will be important, because usually you can attend and in some cases even become part of these committees. Do you want to advocate for better public transportation? Find out when the transportation committee meets. Go to that meeting. If they have a Q&A, get some fuckin’ Qs ready and demand some fuckin’ As.
And then there’s the big kahunas of council meetings and state legislature sessions. Most city/town councils have a segment of their weekly/monthly meetings to hear from the public (this is different from a public hearing, FYI, although they too are really important and you should find out if there are any going on where you live and when). Do you have something you want to get in front of the whole council? Get your ass on the list! In Austin I think you had to call or email the council’s office by the day before; in my town you just roll up and get in line when it comes time. Then for state legislatures, often there will be specific bills on which they ask for “citizen input” or however else they describe it. This is less practical because we don’t all live in easy distance of our state capital, but if you do, consider getting involved there. (And right now with the pandemic, your state legislatures may have new rules about citizen participation that actually make it easier for you to get involved, for once.)
Mostly, though, this is about local involvement — find out who’s in control of your city, your county, your precinct and district and all the other ways your home is demarcated. Talk to these people, even if it makes you nervous; their power to make effective change comes with their responsibility to listen, and your power to make them listen comes with your responsibility to speak.

I gave the AILET today. To all the people giving AILET in the next few years, this is what I'd suggest
1) Look at past years papers as early on in your prep as you can. I made the mistake of leaving it at the last moment
2) Don't neglect static gk. Since static was removed from clat, I didn't focus on static and ended up missing some pretty doable gk qs
3) Give mocks regularly, but keep in mind that the mocks Career Launcher provides are far easier than AILET test papers.
4) Use multiple resources for gk. I know people say focussing on one resource in the best, but multiple resources help revise the stuff you have done and also help you get access to more info. I use videos like those of GkToday, finology, legaledge as well as material from clat oriented telegram channels
5) Don't neglect English vocabulary. The English vocab seemed pretty tough, I am usually a high scorer in this section but I left 6-7 questions. Focus of vocabulary, it can be the gamechanger
6) AILET is lengthy. AILET wants you to panic. Don't. You will have to leave a lot of questions, don't make guesses as negative marking fucks you over
I know that barely any of my followers would be giving Indian law entrances, but if there is anyone then these tips would be of great help to them.

How YOU can make me write FOR YOU (per the URL)*
*(I will be figuring out things as I go, so this post might change/be updated as time goes on.)
I will not write school/work assignments for you. When I say “I’ll write for you” or “I’ll be your voice,” I mean that you can send me writing prompts (whether it be ones you find on the internet or make up on your own) you’d be interested in seeing completed or topics of real-life issues you’d like someone else to put into words for you.
Alright, now that I have said that, if you’re still interested continue onward, my friend! (I have bolded the points, so you may skim to gather the exact info you want to know.)
(If you have further questions, you are welcome to send them to my ask inbox!)
1. Well, what kind of requests can I send in, then?
Fabulous question! Pretty much any sort of prompt you can think of (PG/PG-13 only) or have found on the internet.
There are Tumblrs strictly dedicated to posting all sorts of writing prompts; if you have seen one that has left you wondering how that story might play out, you can send in that prompt and I’ll write up a completed story based off it. (That can be a direct screenshot or copy-paste. Also, Pinterest has some, as well.)
Or, if you have thought up any plot yourself before but are not the writer-type, you can share those with me and I’ll write it for you!
And the last kind of request can be prompted by your real life experiences or feelings. You can ask me to write something less story-like about anxiety, or a recent breakup you went through.
2. How do I send in my request?
There are two ways, actually!
a) via the ask feature. Which is titled “Ask qs or send in (less detailed) requests!”
b) via the submission feature. Which is titled “Send in your (more detailed) requests!”
3. What is the difference?
The difference isn’t really much, honestly, but you choose which one you’ll use depending on how much detail you have to give me (and if your prompt is written on an image).
If your prompt is written on an image: Submission box.
The ask feature has a word limit, so if your prompt fits within 500 characters (so including spaces and punctuation)—and is not an image—you can submit it via the ask feature. (Note: As of now, I have it open for anonymous requests. So, if you choose to send in your request as an anon, you’ll have to check in on my blog for the finished work since I will not be able to tag you in the completed post.)
And, as it follows, if your prompt will be quite detailed, the submission box is where you’ll send in your request.
4. How much detail should I give you?
Well, that is entirely up to you! I am writing it for you. It can be as little as “I’d like a free-verse poem about anxiety,” or “Here is a prompted dialogue I found. Name Person A Aaron (male) and Person B Tracey (female).”
You can give me specific names, personality-traits, location, ending, timeline (e.g. happens all in one hour), title name, theme, trope, 1st/2nd/3rdperson, etc.
But, don’t stress, you don’t have to give me any further details than a simple prompt you found on Pinterest! I want to ensure you are satisfied with what I write, so I am allowing you as much control as you’d like. (Please specify if you would absolutely not want curse words used in the work.)
5. How many requests can I send in?
As many as you’d like! Truthfully, it will be a great compliment to me to receive multiple requests from you!
6. How long will the completed work be?
Not-a-story/poem: Will likely range between 50-300 words.
A story: Likely to range somewhere between 500-1,500 words.
These are not meant to be long. They are meant to be fun writing projects I can complete in an afternoon, and for readers to be able to devour a handful in one-sitting when time allows.
7. What is the official rundown on how this works and what the post will look like?
What you do before it is written: Send in your request, containing as many specifics as you’d like, and patiently wait for me to complete it.
What I’d appreciate you do once it is done: Read it (hopefully that is obvious haha)! Follow, reblog, like, comment, share with your friends, and if I am lucky, you’ll send in another one! You can send me via messages or the ask box your feelings and thoughts about it, constructive criticism, and any further commentary you’d like to make. I will do my best to immediately fix any mistakes or errors.
As for how it’ll look: Well, a lot like this post. Here, I provided a sample picture (if you’re viewing it on the mobile app. On desktop it will aesthetically look different):
Tumblr media
Well, this is the end, and that was a lot of details; I hope I did not lose your interest. I look forward to writing something for you!

hi imane, in addition to the qs on travel, do you know of any websites i could look into for places to visit in different countries and cities? i have never travelled on my own before, and would like to compile some resources on things to do in certain places because i don’t know a lot of people internationally. i know someone who travels a lot but they are my friend’s best friend and i am worried about making both parties upset if i were to ask so here i am SHHFJSJSJAJ thank you angel!
hi babe! tbh i think tripadvisor is very efficient in terms of listing places to visit bc u have so many reviews and you can download the app and organise the places that interest you in different list. i usually save some restaurants in neighborhoods that i intend on visiting and i’ve booked a couple of activities for an upcoming trip. what i also do is after using trip advisor as a starting point, i just google “ten things to do in (insert location)” and make a mental list of it. also netflix traveling shows like somebody feed phil, ugly delicious, chef’s table and street food provide a lot of guidance (bc i am guided by my stomach first and foremost lol). use ur text app to list activities u have stumbled upon and try to group them by neighborhoods. for example last time i went to lisbon i watched the episode of somebody feed phil on the city which provided me with places i could eat at. from there i went on trip advisor to check activities per neighborhood to see how i could couple activities. i suggest to go at it by thinking that if you have the occasion to do it you should but if not then you should have some back up plans. you should also save half a day to a day for meandering bc u could find a lot of cool activities. case in point: i wanted to visit the oceanarium but it was packed full so i took the bus to the centre and i stopped in front of the tile museum and it was a great experience bc i loved this museum! like don’t be too picky or too obsessive with respecting your plans. and obviously if you know someone who’s been to the city/country you want to visit you should ask them if they have any recommendation. for the life of me i don’t understand why anyone would be upset if you asked a friend of a friend but like oftentimes i am at a loss in front of what people deem unacceptable due to their obsession with keeping people to themselves so like if u think this is how ur friend works check up with her first and if she gets upset don’t feel bad if u think she’s a weirdo bc she is one. LMAO anyways u didn’t ask for that last bit but honestly people should never get upset for getting harmless questions like i just don’t get it. so yeah google (where u can find travel blog posts and lonely planet recs) + trip advisor + funnily enough netflix/youtube are my best friends when i travel. travel vlogs can be boring/annoying but if you follow people you like you should glean a lot of info from them. ask me again tonight if you’d like recommendations on channels to follow bc i watch them from my tv and i’m logged on my sister’s account on this device lol. i don’t really ask recommendations from friends but that’s an interesting avenue nonetheless. if you’re going to places like thailand and you want to book a boat tour you can ask your hotel and you’ll most likely get redirected to trusted service providers and whatnot.
note: always check if you need certain travel documents and medical procedures (such as vaccines) at the very least 4 months before you travel. visas can take a long time to be issued and when you need several vaccines they may need to be spaced out over a large period of time. you will avoid a LOT of needless stress if you check things thoroughly before you book anything. if you are worried you will forget something, do a check list and be diligent with it!

Sit Down, Class #2.
OOC: Once again, I find myself bored, so here you go. More terminology, related info, and such. Once again, I own nothing related to this, and thus I make no money off of this. ☕
Rc Suppressants.
Rc suppressants are drugs used to suppress the activity of the kakuhou. They were specifically manufactured by the CCG’s Medical Department, designed for the sole purpose of halting a ghoul’s Rc cells. Basically, it impairs and can even halt the use of their kagune, their inhuman resistance to all forms of human tools (guns, knives, and so on), and stunting a ghoul’s regeneration abilities, reducing them to a human state.
Of particular note is that these very same suppressants can be used on humans as well, as it is not the only way to treat the Rc cell over-secretion disease (ROS).
In a liquid state, Rc suppressants exhibit a particular smell. To a ghoul, it carries an unforgettable, repugnant scent that fills the nostrils. Once, a character described it as “hot lava” immediately after being injected with the drugs for the first time.
Currently, Rc suppressants can be delivered in three specific ways: via a syringe, bullets, or quinques. Upon being injected in fluid form through the mucous muscle, the suppressants are absorbed fairly quickly, a trait oftentimes attributed to a drug’s unknown chemicals. Injected drugs are the preferred method, as it allows for the suppressants’ full effects.
Interestingly, when Rc cell activity is halted, it may cause an increase in melanin production that may result in a change of hair colour. The effects of Rc suppressants gradually wear off with time, but the exact time length is unknown.
Quinques.
Quinques are weapons manufactured from a ghoul's kakuhou used by CCG ghoul investigators. They emit electrical signals that stimulate the kakuhou to release and control it upon activation. They can be fashioned into melee or ranged weapons, but most quinques retain some characteristic of the Rc type they were fashioned from.
Interesting to note is that three major differences between kagune and quinques is that unlike kagune, quinques cannot change shape, and they are not able to store or absorb Rc cells beyond the level that was harvested from the ghoul it was made from.
Special quinques include chimera and kakuja quinques.
In rare cases, chimera quinques are possible to fuse with a ghoul with chimera kagune or multiple Rc types. Chimera quinques are also possible when a ghoul naturally possesses two or more Rc types.
Kakuja quinques are exceptionally special quinques, forged from ghouls who have cannibalized and mutated to form a new kagune, becoming a kakuja. It has been most common to become armour, shielding and enhancing the user’s capabilities as it is worn.
The major drawback of wearing kakuja armour is that it is unable to be maintained for long, given that it slowly bites into the user the longer it’s worn, feeding off of the wearer’s life force in order to conserve energy.
Lastly, despite the vast majority of kakuja quinques taking the form of protective armour, there have been several instances in which kakuja quinques have taken on more formidable forms, such as bladed weapons. Besides being potent weapons, they also carry several unusual traits of the original kakuja, including ranged projectiles, detachment, advanced kagune formation, and remote activation.
Commission of Counter Ghoul.
The Commission of Counter Ghoul, usually abbreviated as CCG, was a federal agency in the Tokyo Ghoul series that serves as a criminal investigative body in cases connected to ghouls.
The Ghoul Countermeasures Law was the legal foundation for the CCG's prosecution of ghouls. The CCG's headquarters are in the 1st ward.
The ghouls commonly call the ghoul investigators Doves, a nickname originating from the CCG's seal, which takes the form of a dove.
Ghoul Countermeasures Law.
Ghoul Countermeasures Law are prohibitions and practices that provides the legal foundation of ghoul persecution, headed by the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG).
The Ghoul Countermeasures Law contains related legislation for the handling of ghouls:
1. Firstly, outlaws all ghouls.
2. Sets requirements for identifying those suspected to be ghouls.
3. Outlines the necessary procedures of those confirmed to be ghouls.
4. Includes a ghoul prosecution conduct.
5. Defines the responsibilities of CCG employees.
6. Finally, adds the protocol of punishment for human involvement.
The known articles of the Ghoul Countermeasures Law are as follows. Please note that some articles were fully reformed:
Preamble.
Peace is valued above all else. No CCG employee will forego any effort to maintain the safety of the general public.
Article 12.
1. In correlation to species by which special precautions should be exercised, i.e. ghouls, are specific and distinct in that they are able to manifest kakugan and kagune.
2. With regards to those that have been confirmed to be ghouls, there are no laws that shield such individuals from imprisonment, harm, or death.
Article 13.
1. All ghoul investigators will make the safety of citizens their top priority. (See “preamble” for details.)
2. It is forbidden to cause a ghoul more suffering than necessary.
Article 88.
1. Anyone found to be harbouring or preventing the arrest of a ghoul will be severely punished.
Article 119.
1. Article 119 dictates that human involvement in either harbouring or preventing the arrest of a ghoul will be subject to the death penalty.
One-eyed ghouls.
One-eyed ghouls are the talk of folklore and urban legend in Tokyo Ghoul. They earn the title of “one eye” due to the single kakugan they possess, compared to the dual kakugan all ghouls have. In all outward appearances, they have no distinct differences that set them apart from ordinary ghouls. However, some individuals have been noted to have a peculiar scent that combines with that of a ghoul and a human, identifying them as unusual and thus, very enticing to certain ghouls. It is unknown if all hybrid ghouls share this distinct factor.
The flesh and blood of one-eyed ghouls has been noted to be particularly delicious, making them a high-priority target for ghouls that partake in cannibalism.
Rumours state that one-eyed ghouls are far stronger than that of their ghoul mother/father, primarily due to hybrid vigour; to the current point, it has not been further elaborated on. To date, almost all ghoul-human hybrid specimens have shown a radical evolution of their base abilities, with some individuals developing either an incomplete kakuja or a full kakuja in a shorter time period than normal.
Currently, there are only two ways in which a one-eyed ghoul can be created. They are as follows:
Pregnancy:
Natural-born hybrids, those born with a ghoul’s abilities through the conceived union of either a male ghoul and a female human, or a female ghoul and a male human, are extremely rare. According to one character, the chances of conceiving a child naturally is low, and should the mother become pregnant, the child oftentimes perishes at some point during pregnancy. However, there are three noteworthy points listed below:
If the father is a ghoul and the mother is a human, the child will not receive the necessary nutrition to survive to full-term, and will certainly die unless the mother engages in cannibalism. In the reverse, should the mother be a ghoul and the father a human, oftentimes the mother’s body will mistake the fetus to be food, and absorb the unborn baby for nutrition.
The above would only apply if every child born of the union of a father ghoul and a female human resulted in a one-eyed ghoul which, according to one character, would be impossible; the chances are far too low. This would indicate that the character was unaware of half-humans, those born from the union of a ghoul parent and a human parent.
Unlike one-eyed ghouls, half-humans are far more common. They are able to eat human food, cannot manifest neither kakugan or a kagune, and are born with high physical capabilities, but suffer from accelerated aging due to a shortened lifespan.
Kakuhou Transplant:
The primary method of creating one-eyed ghouls is to surgically implant a kakuhou into a human subject. In the rare scenario in the operation being successful, the patient becomes known as an artificial ghoul, a subject with all the abilities of a ghoul. Regarding the kakuhou transplant surgery, there are three points below:
Quinx (AKA Qs, Quinckes) are artificial ghouls created by the CCG, an experimental process undertaken after the anti-ghoul organization examined a similar surgery with one particular character. Through a similar procedure as a kakuhou transplant, Quinx are granted the abilities of a ghoul after being implemented with quinque steel layers. While Quinx are not considered full half-ghouls due to their usually low Rc cell count after the surgery, as well as maintaining the ability to consume human food, they are inspired by the results of a certain doctor’s experimental procedures.
Oggai are a new “updated” version of the previous first-generation of Quinx. As a new race of one-eyed ghouls, Oggai have the unusual ability to choose to activate either one or both kakugan at will. It is estimated that around 100 individuals (children) were created using the aforementioned doctor’s perfected kakuhou transplant surgery, and all the Oggai children were enhanced to be adept at both tracking and eliminating ghouls.
Modified humans are distorted “failed” experiments that, again, the previously mentioned doctor discarded, having failed to fully become one-eyed ghouls. They have the mental capacity of a child, if not as low as a baby. A modified human’s physique is big, muscular but deformed, and due to being unable to manifest neither kakugan or a kagune, they have to use weapons or quinques to make up for this shortcoming. These “modified humans” were given to a certain ghoul to be her pets, “children”, and scrappers.

6 Crazy Things Your Body’s Doing While You Sleep
Hiya Gorgeous!
I love sleep! If you’ve been following me for a while, then you’ve probably heard me talk about it at least once. What can I say? The more rested I feel, the stronger I am body, mind and creative spirit. The fact is, sleep is critical to our overall well-being.
Recently I was watching an interview with sleep researcher and scientist, Matthew Walker, PhD (he wrote this awesome book), and something he said really resonated with me:
“Sleep has an image problem. We chastise people who get sufficient sleep. We give them this label of being slothful or lazy, and that has to change.”
Damn. He put words to something I’ve been feeling for a while now. We really don’t give sleep the credit or respect it deserves.
Look, I know how it is. When you’ve got a busy life those 8 hours might feel like time lost. You might even start to think about how much more you could fit in if you shaved off just an hour or two of rest. Or maybe you’re losing sleep because some nights, that smart brain of yours just won’t shut off.
But here’s the thing: Getting your Zzzs is about more than just recharging on the surface-level. There’s a lot going on when we’re asleep—and getting enough can be a matter of life or death.
So why DO we sleep, anyway?
The bottom line is this: Your body is busy when you’re awake. It doesn’t have the time or energy to do everything it needs to do to keep you happy and healthy. That’s why it’s gotta do some of that stuff while you’re asleep! Ya know, so it can focus.

6 Crazy Things Your Body Does While You’re Asleep
Here are just a few of the fascinating things that happen when you’re out like a light.
1. Helps you make decisions.
I’ve got a whole new appreciation for the phrase, “sleep on it” after learning about the connection between decision-making and sleep. Have a tough choice coming your way? Don’t stay up until the wee hours stressin’ about it. Instead, get your 7-9 hours so your brain is ready to do some heavy lifting!
Get this: Our brains can even make decisions WHILE we’re asleep. This article describes one study in which participants were asked to group spoken words into two categories. For example, they’d have the option to categorize words like “cat” and “hat” as objects or animals by pressing a button (let’s say right for object, left for animal).
After this task became more automatic for the subjects, researchers continued to give them words to categorize, but this time in a dark room where they were told they could fall asleep. And though they stopped pressing the buttons once they were asleep, the same brain activity required to push left or right persisted. Wow!
And here’s another important way that sleep and decision-making are connected: Research shows that when you’re sleep deprived, there’s more activity in the parts of your brain that analyze positive outcomes and less activity in parts responsible for weighing negative outcomes (source). That means that getting sufficient sleep not only preps you to make decisions, but smart ones. So avoid making any big life changes when you’re exhausted, ok?
2. Saves your memories.
Ever wonder how memories are really made? Well, when we’re snoozin’ away at night, our beautiful brains are hard at work performing a complex restructuring process called “memory consolidation.”
Memory may seem like a simple concept (especially in today’s world of seemingly never-ending cloud storage that can be accessed in an instant), but the information we absorb actually goes on an intricate journey to become stable, recollectable memories.
Say, for example, you’ve just met someone new. When they tell you their name, your brain takes in that information and stores it in your short-term memory. But later when you’re asleep, your brain makes the connections it needs to move that name over to your long-term memory. Think of it like moving blueberries from your refrigerator to your freezer so they’ll last longer.
If you’re curious, check out the video from TED-Ed below—it’ll help you understand what’s goin’ on in your noggin at night when it comes to memory. Plus, it’s a lot of fun to watch.
youtube
3. Builds your immunity.
Are you especially prone to catching colds or getting the latest nasty stomach bug that’s going around? Well, let me ask you another question: When was the last time you got a full 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep?
Don’t get me wrong, there’s a whole lot that goes into maintaining a healthy immune system. And I know you may have other health challenges, which are important factors to keep in mind. But one thing we do have some control over when it comes to building our immunity is the quality and amount of sleep we’re getting on a regular basis.
Our bodies make cytokines when we’re asleep (source). These proteins support our immune system by targeting infection and inflammation (and you know what inflammation leads to… disease). We simply can’t produce sufficient cytokines to stay healthy when we’re awake, so get to bed, baby!
4. Cleans out your brain’s waste products.
Waste products build up in our brains when they’re busy doing all of that thinking. That’s why we have our glymphatic system—our brain’s waste removal service! The thing is, it’s not all that effective during our awake hours because there’s a lot of other stuff going on up there.
But when we’re asleep, the glymphatic system can more productively flush those toxic byproducts so we can wake up with the space we need to think/feel/do/be our most amazing selves. Yay!
5. Regulates your metabolism and appetite.
Not getting enough sleep can slow down your metabolism. One study found that losing just 2 hours of sleep a night for even a short period of time can lead to noticeable changes. Researchers observed that participants’ cells become more insulin resistant and less able to efficiently take in glucose when they were sleep deprived (source). What’s that mean? Well, if your body isn’t able to process foods at the speed it should, it may lead to weight gain or stubborn weight that you aren’t able to change.
And when it comes to appetite, sleep is essential for making sure you have appropriate levels of hunger-regulating hormones. Research has shown that people who don’t get enough sleep have decreased levels of leptin, a hormone that inhibits hunger, and increased levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite (source). Plus, since sleep deprivation is a stressor, your body makes more cortisol which can increase cravings for sweets and comfort foods. Put these factors together and you’ve got a perfect storm of appetite confusion!
6. Supports your mental health.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, people with insomnia are 10 times as likely to have clinical depression and 17 times as likely to have clinical anxiety. This correlation between lack of sleep and mood disorders is pretty staggering. So what is it about sleep that promotes good mental health?
This one gets pretty complicated because not only is sleep essential to a healthy mental state, but the lack of it can amplify symptoms of anxiety and depression in very serious ways. Sleep and mood are so intimately intertwined, it can be hard to distinguish cause from effect.
Here’s what we know: “Normal” sleepers cycle between two major sleep categories. When that cycle is disrupted, it throws off our neurotransmitter and stress hormone levels—and that can cause all sorts of problems for our moods, including impairing thinking and emotional regulation (source).
Taking care of our mental health is multifaceted and there’s no “right” way to do it. It’s also important to remember that just like with other health challenges, some factors are out of our control. But we can do our best to get sufficient sleep. And hey, if I can do this one thing to help keep myself happy and healthy, you better believe I’m all in. Whaddya say, are you with me?!
Struggling with sleep? I’ve got just the thing…
You might be thinking to yourself, “Ok, Kris, I get it… Sleep is important! But I lie awake at night/can’t calm down before bed/toss and turn/don’t feel tired/etc.”

12 Phone Interview Tips to Take Your Conversation from Bland to Brilliant
Phone interviews — HRs’ convenience and job candidates’ major source of anxiety. What if the connection is bad and I won’t hear them? What if my speech sounds slurred and I’ll have to repeat myself over and over again? Or, gulp, what if we’ll have those long moments of awkward silence? Anyone can have a slight (or not so) phone interview phobia and that’s OK. But you must not let that anxiety sabotage your interview!
The best way to calm your nerves and ace your interview is to be as prepared as possible. If you are ready to roll, here are our best phone interview tips!
1. Start with a Background Research of the Company
That phone will ring in a couple of days. Before it does, channel all your early nervous energy into a productive chore: company research.
Just like when preparing for a face-to-face interview, do some background digging on the employer. In particular, try to collect the following deets:
Company history, vision, and mission
The business sector and the target market they operate in
Their key objectives
Main products/services they offer
Cultural values
Any recent corporate news/happenings
Closest competitions
Doing this legwork will help you in several ways during the interview. First, it helps you visualize the party you’d be speaking to and guesstimate what would matter to them the most.
Secondly, being familiar with the company mission as well as cultural values will help you adapt your tone and communication style (from more casual to more corporate) to match the one of the interviewer’s. Positioning yourself ‘just like them’ is a secret way of getting to your next interview round. (more on this in the next tip!).
Lastly, having strong background knowledge about the company, industry, and competition will help you answer those popular phone interview questions with much more ease since you won’t have to google up the answers with another hand.
2. Prepare Some Questions Too
Most phone interview tips focus on coaching you on how to answer the common screening questions. But an interview always assumes two-way communication, meaning you are also expected to chip in with some Qs.
Posing meaningful questions during a phone interview has several advantages:
You demonstrate your interest in the company
Quick ice-breaker questions can put you at ease with the interviewer
Also, asking questions helps get across your personality more effectively.
Lastly, you actually learn more information about the proposed position
So as part of your phone interview ‘pre-gaming’, be sure to jot down several specific questions to the interviewer on a notepad. Then keep it within reach during the call.
3. Think Through Your Interview Setting in Advance
Give yourself a good 30 minutes before your phone interview to pick your surroundings and pep-talk yourself into the right mood.
Find a quiet spot in the house. If you have housemates, politely ask them to tone down on the noise during your interview call. Let the dog out. Close the windows if there’s street noise.
Also if you are doing your phone interview from home, don’t:
Slouch on the couch. Sit behind a table or a desk.
Wear your PJs. Get properly dressed.
Pace. This will only add up to your anxiety.
Leave your email, social media, or another pinging software on.
Don’t feel comfortable speaking from your house or the office? Go outside. Being in nature is a scientifically-proven way to reduce stress and anxiety levels. Looking at the greenery helps retain focus and distract your mind from negative thinking. So park yourself on a bench and get done with your conversation while enjoying some fresh air!
4. Check Your Phone
This is one of those no-brainer tips for phone interviews. But so many people actually forget to check their phone before the interview! Specifically:
Is it charged? You don’t want to go running around scrambling for a charge during the interview.
Did you turn off the Internet? You don’t want a barrage of social media messages to distract you.
Is it off silent mode? It would be super embarrassing to miss the call or get the interviewer diverted to voicemail.
5. Have Your Resume At Hand During the Conversation
Always have a copy of your resume close by. You can pretty much guarantee that your telephone interviewer will be looking at a copy when they call you and asking questions around the details you’ve provided there.
As the nerves can make anyone forgetful, it’s best if both of you stay on the same page — the same page of your resume.
6. Call In Early
Some employers will ask you to phone in at a certain time, let’s say 10.30 am. If that’s the case, be sure to dial them at least 2-3 minutes before that. After all, you might have to go through the answering machine or their secretary first.
This can take longer than you may expect, so it pays to call a couple of minutes early should the line be busy because the receptionist is on another call, or you are kept waiting on hold while being transferred.
7. Smile While You Chat
Here’s one of the less conditional over the phone interview tips you may hear: smile as you talk. Yeah, it may look and feel odd doing so. But smiling your way through your interview can really help you to feel better and less nervous about your call.
Research proves that smiling diminishes your body’s response to stress and helps lower heart rate during intense situations. Another study also found that a smile generates the same level of excitement for the brain as up to 2,000 bars of chocolate. So keeping a small smile during your phone interview can help you be more relaxed, happier, and even more approachable as the speaker will likely feel your positive vibes!
8. Try the Perspective-Taking Approach
The biggest issue with phone interviews is that it’s harder to be likable over a cord. You can’t gauge the other person’s facial expressions and other non-verbal cues to adjust your behavior. What you can do, though, to appear more likable during the conversation is to try and position yourself as someone ‘who gets them’. The gist of perspective-taking is to emphasize with the other party and attempt to see the world through their eyes during the conversation.
In fact, saying a simple phrase such as “I can really put myself in your shoes” has been scientifically proven to make the other person more empathetic towards the speaker.
So during the next phone interview, try to emphasize more with the interviewer and understand where their questions and concerns are coming from. Then tailor your answers to show that you share their perspective too.
9. Listen Carefully
OK, this may seem obvious because you are on the telephone, but many people having telephone interviews make the mistake of not listening carefully enough. They do this because they allow their minds to race ahead of themselves and think up questions or things to say without actually paying full attention to what the interviewer is actually asking.
So rather than keeping that brain of yours constantly occupied with your next response, do the following:
Briefly note the HRs questions and key points
Incorporate those tidbits into your answers
Use them to pose additional questions at the end of the interview
Doing so will make you look like you are detailed-oriented and a good listener — these are two prized interpersonal skills among employers.
10. Don’t Talk Too Much
You have to admit that with a real-life, face-to-face interview you are in a better position to read facial expressions and body language. You can take in visual clues about when to stop talking and allow the interview to move on. This is much harder to interpret over the phone, so the best thing you can do is to try to answer any questions concisely without talking too much. It is very easy to ramble on and on about a subject, especially if the interviewer is asking you about your hobbies and personal interests.
While bonding with an interviewer is important, it should not come at the expense of addressing your key qualifications. Phone interviews are for screening out candidates. If the HR fails to capture some important info from you because you’ve run out of time, they’ll just move on to the next person on the list.
So keep your initial answers short, sweet, and valuable. Elaborate when being asked.
11. Speak Up If You Cannot Hear Well
Should you have difficulty hearing your interviewer, don’t be afraid to speak up. You may have an interviewer with a very soft or quiet voice that makes it hard for you to hear the questions being asked clearly. It’s perfectly OK to ask them to speak a bit louder or repeat the question. It is better to politely ask them to speak up rather than go through the interview misunderstanding questions because you cannot hear them properly.
If you are unlucky enough to experience a bad connection, then explain the issue to the other person and ask them if you can disconnect and try again. This is a much better approach than trying to struggle through the interview unable to hear clearly.
12. And Speak Slower If You Need To
The courtesy of speaking distinctively goes both ways. So if you are excited or a natural rapid-fire speaker, try to tune down a bit on your excitement as the other party can be struggling to keep up with the convo.
If the interviewer is asking you several times to repeat things, try to adjust your delivery pace, tone, and speed. After all, your goal isn’t to deliver as many words as possible within the set timeframe but to clearly convey what makes you a strong candidate for the job at hand.
An increasing number of companies are now relying on phone interviews to pre-screen candidates and eliminate some targets, especially for competitive positions. Passing the phone interview, however, is almost always a certain guarantee of being called in for the next round.
So don’t mess it up! After all, you know a bunch of phone screening interview tips that can help you leave the best impression with the employer!

First of all, they're relatively unusual to see, giving your resume a fresh and clean appearance to bleary-eyed hiring managers. The very first thing the hiring supervisor will see are all of your greatest accomplishments and skills, all of which are straight connected to the task publishing they require filled. You can-- you need to sand away the coarse edges and present the valuable gem of your work experience at the top.
A Modern Method
It offers your resume a greater opportunity of passing through Applicant Tracking System (ATS) software, which is utilized to evaluate out irrelevant prospects based on the content of their resumes. Discussed briefly, it allows you to put a higher concentration of appropriate keywords and key expressions in your resume, ensuring that it earns a "passing grade" and in fact reaches human eyes.
10 Rules of Resume Composingto make sure you're hitting the right notes throughout your whole resume.
INFOGRAPHIC: How to Compose a Qualifications Summary
It should cover your greatest profession accomplishments, providing you as a well-rounded prospect with many talents. As I stated previously, the Credentials Summary resembles a gem, and its structure is similar. Gems have lots of different shining elements, and so do your abilities and achievements. Providing the finest of each facet, integrated into an unified whole, finishes the gem.
Utilize this as a guide for writing your own. Think about each category an aspect of your gem. Attempt to believe of examples from your work history that fall under each major heading.
Everything you need to compose an unbelievable Qualifications Summary
The key here is to take THE BEST examples from your work experience, and put them in the Qualifications Summary.

A Credentials Summary is a list of 6 bullet points showing a variety of your most excellent achievements. It is put at the top of your resume, in place of the Career Goal. It is an effective tool, designed to please Applicant Tracking System software, and grasp the attention of the hiring supervisor. By writing a Qualifications Summary, you can vastly improve your resume and stick out amongst your competition.
RG Pointer
Still can't decide if you should utilize a QS? Check out our Resume Flowchart. Here are two more examples, from different industries. One is written for an executive secretary, the other for a waiter. We picked these 2 markets based upon their popularity on this site:
Example 1: Executive Secretary Qualifications Summary
EXECUTIVE SECRETARY|EFFECTIVE-- ORGANIZED-- ATTENTIVE
Handled 4 staff members in an executive workplace, preserving an atmosphere of exactness, performance, and attention to information
Developed and carried out effectiveness programs targeted at enhancing direct office services, conserving $150,000 each year in labor expenses
Examined and condensed incoming information from various customers and clients, writing 1,500 word reports twice a week for our CEO
Organized business getaways, dinners, and retreats, increasing business satisfaction by 9% according to our yearly staff member satisfaction survey
Earned the 2013 "Outstanding Achievement Award" in a company of 200+ individuals
Example 2: Waiter Credentials Summary
WAITER|CHARISMATIC-- EFFECTIVE-- KNOWLEDGABLE
Managed a 3 table section totaling 25 seats in a busy Italian diner, requiring quick thinking, effective planning, and strong people skills
Leveraged a depth and breadth of wine understanding to up-sell $150 in red wine sales nighttime on average, by explaining to clients ideal red wine and entree pairings.
Regularly gotten 5 star reviews from an online rating system, with accompanying applauding comments about my service
Reduced consumer disagreements throughout the restaurant with strong communication and listening skills
Earned "Staff Member of the Month" six times in 2 years
Qualifications Summary vs. Career Objective-- What's the Difference?
The distinction between these two lies mostly in their length and kind. Their purpose is the exact same: they are indicated to provide the hiring supervisor a fast understanding of how your abilities and experience can assist his/her business.
Profession Goal
The Profession Objective is a 1-2 sentence explanation of what would make you a strong prospect for the job. It offers a really basic overview of your work experience and skills.
Here's an example:
Hotel House cleaning worker with over 9 years of experience in the provision and management of timely housekeeping service. Has a knock for attaining and preserving sophistication and a strong ethical foundation.
The problem with the Career Goal is that it's too short to effectively convey your experience and capability.
RG Idea
The Career Objective is really an excellent choice if you do not have as much work experience. If that sounds like you, read our in-depth guide about how to compose a Profession
Goal here. Certifications Summary You may be questioning, "Isn't a Credentials Summary too long to hold the hiring manager's attention?" The answer is no. Despite being longer, it really saves the hiring manager time due to the fact that they don't have to sift through your work experience to discover your real abilities. Basically, you've done that work for them.
They'll show their appreciation by calling you in for an interview.
Certifications Summary vs. Expert Experience-- What's the Difference?
A common criticism of the Credentials Summary is that it looks like another Expert Experience area. There are significant distinctions that must be pointed out.
Professional Experience
Composed in reverse-chronological order
Explains finer details of each task
Gives the hiring supervisor a deeper understanding of your experience
Certifications Summary
Presents a summary of your biggest achievements and credentials
Composed in any order
Does not include fundamental duties and jobs
Keep in mind: You must be cautious not to repeat any bullet points that you used in the Credentials Summary.
I'm A Student: Should I Compose a Certifications Summary?
This will be questionable, however we say go all out-- specifically if you're a very efficient and active trainee. If you're a student, what are the facets that you can show to a possible company?
Critical/relevant coursework and your GPA
Greek life and club activities
Trainee federal government
Internship experience
Volunteer experience
Major academic accomplishments
Awards and honors got
Generally speaking, resume specialists will insist that just professionals with years of experience under their belts need to write a Credentials Summary. I disagree for the following reasons:
No matter who you are, and what your age is, there are aspects of your experience and capability that qualify you over other candidates. If that were not true, everybody would easily find employment. For that reason, you ought to show your credentials prominently.
The general format of a Qualifications Summary is objectively exceptional to a Profession Goal, because it saves the hiring supervisor time and effort. There's no point in handicapping yourself even if you're not a skilled specialist.
To be reasonable, there is an excellent reason that trainees are not motivated to write a Credentials Summary, which I'll cover in the next area.
When Should You NOT Compose a Certifications Summary?
You must prevent composing one if you are lacking in abilities, experience, and activity. That is the primary factor that trainees are dissuaded from writing a them-- since it's naturally going to look weak and fragile compared to a seasoned expert.
If you fall under the classification of unskilled, ignorant, and not active, you need not fret. There are other methods that you can utilize to strengthen your resume and communicate your employability. You can read them here.

How I Used Facebook Lead Ads to Create a Quiz
One of my favorite things to do is solve problems by using a tool in ways it wasn’t meant to be used. In this post, I will outline how I did that by using Facebook lead ads to create a quiz.
First, credit goes to Lucas Elliott of our team. A few weeks ago, I talked about using quizzes as a lead magnet. Lucas suggested creating a quiz with a Facebook lead ad. I balked, knowing that it wouldn’t be as dynamic as what I wanted to do.
A few weeks later, I was inspired to try it out. Now I feel crazy for not trying it sooner.
Ultimately, I warmed to the idea because this would be one of a few strategies involving quizzes. While the Facebook lead ad may not function the way a quiz would on my website, the benefits of experimenting with this would be huge.
So, let’s take a closer look at the thought process, creation, and results. Why quizzes in the first place? How did I set this up? What kinds of results am I seeing?
Background: Why Quizzes?
My email list is the backbone of my business. When it comes to generating revenue, it’s my list that is responsible for much of it.
In many ways, I use Facebook ads backwards compared to most advertisers. I spend most of my budget promoting content (building a remarketing audience) and growing my email list. While I do run ads to promote products, my email marketing is then mostly responsible for the heavy lifting.
During the past couple of years, my primary list builder has been a monthly webinar. But even if the content is largely the same from month-to-month, it takes a great deal of effort to do this.
That’s why I stopped my monthly webinar after April’s edition. As a result, the growth of my list — though you could still register generally to my newsletter — lurched to a stop.
And that, of course, is a problem. I need a fresh, active list to help drive revenue. When list growth stops, revenue is at risk.
And so, I finally restarted my monthly webinar, albeit temporarily, in November. I’ll run it at least one more time, if not two. In the meantime, I’m on a mission to find a more manageable replacement.
I’ve thought of turning my webinar content into a video series. But I also decided I’d experiment with quizzes.
I learned a year ago with my 30-question quiz how engaging they can be. But what if I had more than one quiz? What if they were all 5-10 questions? And on a specific topic? I could create dozens of them.
So, the first thing I did was find a quiz software (I chose TypeForm). I would use a single quiz to invite people in. If you wanted access to the (eventual) quiz library, you’d need to register.
Here’s that quiz…
(function() { var qs,js,q,s,d=document, gi=d.getElementById, ce=d.createElement, gt=d.getElementsByTagName, id="typef_orm", b="https://embed.typeform.com/"; if(!gi.call(d,id)) { js=ce.call(d,"script"); js.id=id; js.src=b+"embed.js"; q=gt.call(d,"script")[0]; q.parentNode.insertBefore(js,q) } })()
Strategy: Lead Ads and Quizzes
Okay, so what do quizzes have to do with Facebook lead ads? Can I use them to drive registrations to the quiz library? Or could I create a quiz directly within a lead ad form?
Why not both?
Lead ad forms allow the flexibility of creating custom questions. I can, then, add my questions to the form itself. And if you want to see the answers — and participate in future quizzes — you provide your contact information to subscribe.
The hope is that this form will be engaging enough to get people through a nine-question quiz (I’d use nine of the 10 questions from the embedded quiz above, removing one with long answers).
My Facebook Lead Ad Quiz
To kick off this experiment, I created a VERY simple ad. I find that simple is the key to any experiment since it limits or eliminates delays.
If you click on my ad, the form opens. You can scroll through all nine questions before entering your contact info and submitting (click the image to get a close-up view)…
After submitting, you are presented with a thank-you screen within the form…
If you close the form, you’ll still receive an email from me with your answers as well as the correct answers (more on that later). If you want, you can click on the “See the Answers” button and you’ll be redirected to a page on my website with an explanation of all 10 answers.
Set Up a Lead Ads Quiz: Campaign
So, let’s walk through, step-by-step, how I did this — and how you might be able to do something similar.
First, make sure to use the Lead Generation campaign objective…
Set Up a Lead Ads Quiz: Ad
Create the copy with text, headline, and news feed description. You can now use a square image to take up more vertical real estate in the news feed. Facebook recommends a 1080x1080px image.
For the call-to-action button, there aren’t great options for a quiz, unfortunately. I went with “Learn More.”
Set Up a Lead Ads Quiz: Form
When creating the form, I used the “More Volume” form type.
I don’t know that it matters much in this case given anyone who submits the quiz will have to go to a lot of effort. But feel free to experiment.
I added an intro that included a shorter (1200x628px) image and a prompt to provide contact info at the bottom so that I can send the answers.
Within the “Questions” area, first I added a simple headline (“Ready? Let’s go…”) and selected the contact info I would need. In this case, I asked for first name, last name, and email address.
Next, I created custom questions. These would be the actual questions for the quiz. I chose to use multiple choice questions.
Here’s how it looks as I added my questions…
After updating the privacy policy, I created a thank-you screen.
Note that I have given people the option of viewing all of the answers on a new page I created on my website. You can send people wherever you want here.
Targeting
Whom you target with these ads is completely up to you. But something that can apply universally is how you exclude.
In my initial test, I targeted people who are in the top 5% of those who spent the most time on my website during the past 180 days.
After a successful initial test in the US, I created new ad sets for audiences in other countries. Another day later, I would create ad sets targeting lookalike audiences.
But again, you shouldn’t necessarily copy that targeting approach. The people you target depends on the resources available to you.
Exclusions
What is mostly universal, though, is the group of people you should consider excluding.
In my case, I am excluding the following groups of people:
Subscribed to Quiz Library (Website Custom Audience thank-you page)
Subscribed to Quiz Library (Email Custom Audience)
Subscribed to Quiz Library (Submitted Lead Ad Form)
Opened (but may not have submitted) form within past 14 days
Some explanations may be in order…
Notice that I’ve excluded the people who have subscribed to my quiz library in three different ways. The reason for this is that no one way will capture everyone.
Recall that some people could register via the form on my website while others do from the lead ad form. By excluding all three methods, there’s a better chance that I avoid targeting people who are already registered (though never guaranteed).
Finally, I have excluded those who simply OPENED the form during the past 14 days. This way, I cut out those who poked around but maybe didn’t submit — at least for the time being. I’ll hit them again in a couple of weeks. This is a way to control frequency to a point.
Another approach I like to take, but didn’t here, is using video instead of a static image. If you do that, I would also consider creating an audience of people who already watched the video (or a portion of the video) and exclude those people (either using the 14-day method or longer). Once again, this is a way to manage frequency.
My Quiz Automation
First, know that people who complete your Facebook lead ad forms aren’t automatically added to your email list without some third-party automation. I use Zapier for this (not an affiliate link).
I create a Zap with a trigger of those who submitted my lead ad form.
I use Infusionsoft as my CRM. The first action, then, is to tag the new contact in Infusionsoft.
I then create another action of sending a Zapier email.
While I can also just rely on my email campaign in Infusionsoft, there’s a special trick that you can pull off in this Zapier email. Since it’s connected to your lead ad form, you can pull in the exact answers. That can allow you to craft a more personal email.
For mine, I list out the question, the answer you provided, and my explanation of the answer. Here is what it looks like through the first couple of questions…
I’m sure there are ways to feed this info into your Infusionsoft contact and then craft a personalized email from there as well. But again, I opted for simplicity (Infusionsoft is always a beast).
And that’s it!
Early Returns
I’ve been pretty amazed by the early results. For the first four days of this campaign, I generated 61 leads at $.66 per lead. Keep in mind that the audience I was targeting was very small (top 5% of website visitors from the US who spent the most time on my website during the past 180 days).
There are a couple of reasons why this cost per lead is impressive. First, all of the registrants are in the United States, typically the most costly country for a lead. These results aren’t being puffed up by a cheap country.
Second, it takes a significant amount of work to complete this form. Normally, we’re told to limit the amount of information we request in a form. The more form questions, the higher the quality of the lead — though more costly.
So, this is certainly a good start. I then created two more ad sets…
Ad Set #2: WCA Top 5% Time on Website (UK, Canada, Australia)
Ad Set #3: WCA Top 5% Time on Website (Tier 2 Countries with higher CPM)
I combine countries in this case due to budget and sample size. For more info on how I determine countries to target and the budget, check out this recent blog post.
The results? So far, another 61 leads for $.36 per lead.
Look, these are small sample size results, and the costs are bound to increase in the coming days as I exhaust my audiences. But this is seriously encouraging stuff given 1) The typical cost per lead, and 2) The amount of effort that goes into completing this form.
I created three more ad sets today based on the same countries but using lookalike audiences. It’s still very early, of course. While the costs are higher (not surprisingly when targeting a cold audience), we’re still looking at cost per lead from $.72 to $2.40, depending on the ad set.
Not bad!
Your Turn
This is one of many examples of using tools in ways that may not have been intended. I’m encouraged by the results so far.
Have you ever used Facebook lead ads in this way? What types of results have you seen?

Do Links Still Matter for SEO in 2017?
By Eric Enge
In today's post, I'll show you information from three different dates over the past year that highlight why links remain an effective ranking aspect. I'll also go over in detail why Google still utilizes them, and why they are most likely to remain a powerful ranking element for some time to come.In July of 2016, we published our very first research study on Links as a Ranking Factor. Today's post updates that information with a fresh analysis of links as a ranking element, to see if there is any indication of a decline in their importance. In fact, we have actually analyzed the power of links as a ranking factor on three different dates, as follows:
May 2016
August 2016
May 2017
The Results
Let's dig right in and look at the results throughout all 3 data sets that we pulled:
Note that the same 6,000 inquiries were used in all three data sets, and we see that the value stays steady and strong throughout the time period. Some motion backward and forward is natural. We used 6,000 inquiries since that is what we made with the initial study on this subject. With the Research Study 2 and Research study 3 information sets, we likewise pulled data samples for 16,000 questions. Here are the connection scores for those two information sets of 16K inquiries:
When again, both information sets reveal strong outcomes. Note: See the methodology area listed below for a description of exactly what a "Quadratic Mean Spearman Correlation Score" worth actually means. In the first study, we likewise took a view where we aggregated the normalized link counts (see the approach area listed below for an explanation of exactly what that is) by ranking position. The function of this technique was to help change for that the significance and quality of the content are such considerable ranking elements, and to assist us even more examine how links might matter. Here is exactly what we saw:
In this data, there is some obvious erosion, but the story is rather various if
you look at the outcomes for the 2 16K inquiry sets: For this information set, we see a lift in between Research study 2 and Study 3, which remains in contrast to the 6K information set. As an outcome, my belief is that this is simply normal movement of the rankings from a range of factors. Why Aren't the Non-Aggregated Connection Worths Higher? There are 2 significant factors, as follows:1. Importance and Material Quality huge Elements:
In its most basic form, if a web page is not appropriate to an inquiry, it shouldn't rank. That is, obviously, obvious, however the discussion is far more nuanced than that. To show, let's say we have actually got 10 pieces of content that are pertinent sufficient to be considered for ranking for a question. Let's further state that they have"importance ratings "(RS) like this: This appears like it might be a quite great ranking algo on the surface area. We
're ranking the most relevant material on top. You'll see too that I set my significance ratings in a truly narrow variety, which makes sense. If you're not pertinent, you should not rank. The problem is that it's pretty easy to make pieces of content look highly appropriate just by packing the best words in it, and the most relevant material might in reality be offering very poor info to users. So let's include a new score called quality rating(QS )(not the Adwords version of this term, but an actual natural assessment of a page's quality instead), and let's see how that affects our algorithm: This seems an enhancement, and it most likely is. The issue here is that, similar to determining significance
, measuring quality is a difficult thing to do. Let's add one more element to the mix, that of a Link Score(LS), and utilize that to let the "market at big "provide us an indicator on exactly what material is the finest on this subject. Here is exactly what that looks like: You see how the rankings moved around in between the three scenarios? Pretty substantially. In this mock-up
of the Google algorithm, it's quite clear that links are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Need to know the Spearman rating for links as a ranking consider the third scenario revealed? It's 0.28. While this is a significant simplification of the Google algorithm, but even based upon this, you can see why extremely high Spearman scores are tough to achieve.2. Other Algorithms Come Into Play: Examples of the kind of algorithms I'm speaking about consist of: Local search engine result Image results Video results Inquiry Deserves Diversity outcomes These might affect 15 percent of our outcomes. Let's envision that it changes just one of them, and one high scoring result is replaced with a single item(result number
3). In our example, I have actually changed the
3rd result with something that was available in from another algorithm, such as Question Deserves Diversity. Know exactly what this does to the Spearman score for links as a ranking factor for this result? It
drops to 0.03. Ouch!Hopefully, this will provide you some instinct regarding why a score in the 0.3 range is a sign that links are an extremely material consider ranking.Google's Progress in Battling Link Spam Those who state that links are on the decrease as a ranking element often point to the
efforts by spammers to utilize illegitimate practices to get links and earn rankings that their websites don't deserve. This certainly was a substantial issue for Google in the 2002 to 2013 time
range. The tide in this fight began to turn in 2012. What took place initially during that year was that a wave of manual charges began to get evaluated by Google. On their own, these already sent a shockwave through the SEO industry. The next major step was the release of the first version of Penguin on April 24, 2012. This was a huge action forward for Google. As the next few years unfolded, Google invested greatly in a mix of methods to use new versions of Penguin and manual charges to fine-tune their technique to handling people that use invalid approaches to acquiring links. This culminated with the release of Penguin 4.0 on September 23, 2016. With the release of Penguin 4.0, Google's self-confidence in their technique to links had actually ended up being so high that the Penguin algorithm was no longer penalizing sites for acquiring bad links. Since Penguin 4.0, the algorithm simply recognizes those links and ignores them(triggers them to have no ranking value ). This shift from punishing sites with bad links to just discounting those links shows Google's self-confidence that Penguin is discovering a large percentage of the bad links that it's created to find.Of course, they still use manual charges to resolve kinds of
invalid link-building practices that individuals use that Penguin is not targeted at addressing. How much progress has Google in fact made? I still remember the Black Hat/ White Hat panel I rested on in December of 2008 at SES Chicago.
With me were Dave Naylor, Todd Friesen and Doug Heil. A couple of the panel members argued that buying links at the start of campaigning for a website was a requirement, and it was careless for an SEO pro to not do so.How a decade changes things! It has actually been several years given that any SEO in any location has actually argued that buying links represents a smart practice. In truth, you cannot discover anybody making public suggestions about techniques for obtaining links that break Google's Webmaster standards. The whole market for doing those kind of things has been driven underground.Driven underground is not the like
"gone,"however it does reveal that Google's ability to discover and spot issues has actually become quite effective. One last point, and it's a crucial one. Ask yourself, why does Google have the Penguin algorithm, and why do they evaluate manual link penalties?"The answer is easy: Due to the fact that links ARE a major ranking aspect, and plans to get links that do not fit their standards are things that they want to proactively address. Why Are Links a Belongings Signal? Why is Google still utilizing links? Why do not they just change to user engagement signals and social networks signals? I won't
establish the whole reason that these signals are problematic here, but will share one point about each: User Engagement Signals: Google most likely finds some method to use these signals in one circumstance or another, but there are restrictions to what they can do. Here is exactly what the head of their maker learning group, Jeff Dean, stated about them:"An example of a messier support knowing problem is perhaps
attempting to utilize it in exactly what search engine result ought to I show. There's a much wider set of search engine result I can display in response to various questions, and the benefit signal is a little noisy. If a user takes a look at a search results page and likes it or doesn't like it, that's not that apparent."However now, let's get to the core of the concern: Why are links such a great signal? It comes down to 3 major points: Implementing links needs a product financial investment to be made by you. You must own a site and you need to make the effort to carry out the link on a web page. This might not be a big financial investment, however it's considerably more effort than it is to execute a link in a social media post. When you execute a link, you are making a public recommendation recognizing your brand with the web page that you're connecting to. In addition, it's fixed. It sits
there in an enduring manner. On the other hand, with a link in a social media post, it's gone from individuals's feeds quickly
, sometimes only in minutes. Now, here is the huge one: When you implement a link on a page on your site, individuals may click on it and leave your site.Think about that last one for a few seconds more. A( non-advertisement) link on your site is a sign by you (as the publisher of the page with the links )that you think the link has
adequate value to your visitors, and will do enough to boost your relationship with those visitors, that you want to have people leave your site. That's exactly what makes links an exceptionally important signal.Basic Methodology After seeking advice from a couple of specialists on the very best technique ( Paul Berger and Per Enge), I carried out a calculation of the Spearman Correlation on the results for all the questions in our study, then took the Quadratic Mean of those ratings. The reason for doing this is that it leverages the square of the connection variables (where the connection value is R, the quadratic mean utilizes R squared ). It's actually the R squared value that has some meaning in data. If R is 0.8
, then R squared is 0.64, and you can state about that 64 percent of the variability in Y is described by
X. As Paul Berger explained it to me, there is no significant sentence including the correlation variable R, however R squared provides you something meaningful to state about the associated relationship. Here is a visual on how this estimation procedure works: In addition to the various estimation approach, I also utilized a mix of different inquiry types. We evaluated commercial head terms, business long tail terms and likewise informational queries. Two-thirds of our queries were informative in nature.Additional Approaches I believe that both the Mean of the Specific Connections and Quadratic Mean techniques are legitimate, however one of the limitations with these methods is that other aspects can control the ranking algorithm, and make it tough to see the strength of the signal. For that reason, I picked to take some other approaches to the analysis. The first of these was to measure the links in a more aggregated way. To do this, we normalized the amount of links for each outcome. Exactly what I suggest by this is that we took the link counts for each ranking position for a provided question, then divided it by the biggest number of
links for that given query. As an outcome, the largest link score for each inquiry would weigh"1". The factor for doing this is to prevent a few questions that have some outcomes with huge varieties of links from having extreme influence on the resulting calculations. Then we took
the overall of the links for all the search engine result by each ranking position. The equations for this appearance more like this: The value of this is that it ravels the effect of the unfavorable connections in a different method. Think of it as smoothing out the effect of other ranking elements, as shown above(significance score, content rating, and the impact of other algos). This is the calculation that is revealed in the "Aggregate Link Correlation by Ranking Position "data above.I also looked at this one more way. In this view, I continued to utilize the stabilized overalls of the links, but organized them in ranking groups of 10. I.e., I summed the stabilized link overalls for the leading 10, did the exact same for ranking positions 11 to 20, 21 to 30, and so forth. I then determined the connections to see how they looked in terms of what it would take to rank in each 10 position block. Those calculations looked more like this: This provides us a bit more granular technique than just aggregating all the ranking positions into the SERP positions, but still smooths out a few of the limitations of the Mean of Individual Connections technique. That is exactly what is displayed in the"Aggregate Link Connection in Blocks of 10 "information above.Cementing the Point with Case Research Studies We do a great deal of high-end content marketing projects with our customers, a lot of which are Fortune 500 companies. Here is a sampling of the outcomes across many of our clients: The sample results revealed here have been duplicated numerous times by us. Nevertheless, we do not find that links can save bad quality content, or cause low relevance material to rank. All of our efforts focus on getting recognition from, or content published on, really high authority sites.Doing this well requires a focus on how you execute your marketing and PR to get in front of the audiences that matter to your business the most. This will naturally drive
high value links back to your website, and assist you earn rankings that you are worthy of.
