an honest review of the star chapter: sanctuary purely from musical observation (not proofread because i'll post the proofread on rym n aoty)

opening remarks: jeez, november is a treat for me who writes for all the groups i'll be writing for, innit? hi! long time no speak. i've been busy with stuff that i'll be elaborating on later tomorrow but it's comeback time~ and the first up will be txt.

with the scandal that embroiled hybe starting from the hybe vs mhj, the assembly with the department of labor investigating hybe where new jeans' hanni being there, the numerous investigation on hybe regarding downplaying album sales so they don't increase their cost and the damning internal documents that leaked out about hybe "gossiping" the industry, including their own artists, also the news of the full ot7 bts comeback to 2026. txt's comeback can definitely be presumed as some sort of cover-up for hybe by their third largest boy group (bts doing military service, svt is starting to do theirs also). this definitely shows by how "budgeted" the concept photos look, especially with the lover concept that felt too different.

i was also under the understanding that yeonjun's mixtape was even longer than ggum (cause mixtape implies that there is one more track ala agust d's soundcloud mixtapes), so color me confused when i saw that txt is coming back around the time where the cyj mixtape was supposed to come out and they're competing for moa's money honestly. nonetheless, we enter a new era of txt: the star chapter. i like how they come full circle with using "star" as their debut ep is the dream chapter: star, makes me feel that time has gone by so fast that txt is already 5 years going. i also like the concept names for each album, combining pretty much all sides of txt such as the knight, lover, angel, and savior. with this tho and the star recall, i expect more of the isekai-ed type of songs that txt used to make from the dream chapter era. it's interesting to see the trajectory of txt as more of this softer masculine side compared to their other "harsher"-mature sounding counterparts of 4th gen like ateez or stray kids.

first impression: NO SONGS ABOVE 3 MINUTES?! that's a huge minus. 6 song in an ep with the length not even reaching 15 minutes. what is happening? why are they so short? are they really banking on remixes for this cause i already see an extended ep for this. this is actually a bad sentiment that i have with current pop music honestly. what bighit (and hybe) is trying to do is to profit from releasing many singles of the main singles into remixes, banking on the fans who "will always support their idols" to stream it, so that it can get higher in the charts. this is a predatory practice with the likes of taylor swift doing this for her ttpd. and i hate it. it convolutes their discography with a bunch of crap and relinquishes the authenticity of an artist creating art. sigh...

okay, with that tangent out of the way. let's listen!

1.heaven: i do think that they're trying to do a i'll see you there tomorrow by making the guitar strumming vaguer in rhythm, like making you confused about where is the downbeat before you can hear the percussion part in the verse. i also feel like the beat is faster in the chorus. i do think it is much like a text-painting situation where the drumbeat represents heartbeat and how when we move between verse and chorus it represents how your heartbeat is getting faster by confessing that when you are with them, it feels like heaven.

in technicality, the main melody/jingle of this song is very catchy. i like that we can distinguish easily between the member's voices. tho, i do think the vocal mixing can be repaired because there is an awkward jump in decibels between the intro to yeonjun singing. i also think that because the members sing in falsetto in the chorus, with this vocal mix, they sound a bit too compressed. also, gosh, the fact that this song is under 2 minutes yet is begging to be resolved with a bridge before the last chorus. gosh, that cut-off at the end is so disappointing cause i would like the guitar part in the intro to be in the bridge like they're serenading me more with sweet words. totally disappointed.

2.over the moon: okay, wow~ that was unsatisfactory.

when the first sets of synth chords started, this song reminded me of treasure's my treasure. so i expected a much more grandiose type of song kind of like gfriend before being under hybe (rough, sunrise, time for the moonnight). interestingly, they decide to move into an rnb-esque inspiration for the sound with a little bit of influence of (i guess) funk cause i can hear some stevie wonder inspiration from it with the bass line and how the chorus is shaped. i also hear a bit of early the boyz in the chorus think giddy up or right here.

but do i think that this is a main title track? no and this is the first i felt this over a txt title track. maybe it comes down to how short it seems without the bridge, but both sugar rush ride and deja vu still sound like a title track even without bridges. that is, i think, because both songs have an accentuated outro where you know that the song is ending but in this song, the end is just... a trail of the second chorus. it also lacks the grit i identify from txt title tracks. i always believe that txt title track has this sort of epicness or spectacle to it. comparing this to blue hour which has nearly the same brightness in sound, blue hour still has some sense of spectacle to it, especially in regards to the structure of the song that can include the dance break.

overall, i do believe that this sounded more like a b-side that you promote alongside a title track instead of being the title track...

3.danger: this song felt more complete than over the moon even if it is shorter. i do think that it is more in the structure of it that makes it fuller.

other than that, the third song is in and i can already figure out a funk/rnb sound between the three songs. so i hoped that it stayed that way. when i heard the guitar, i thought it would be a more rock song like growing pains but i realized this is more of those michael jackson-esque 80s soft rock songs. i also love how they used the vocals in the song, from the whisper lower voice to the whoop in the higher end of the voice with taehyun. definitely makes me believe that it is a somewhat michael jackson homage.

i do think that the song is too droning cause the bass line and guitar line never change. the addition and subtraction of the synth creating the dynamic in the song. a much more interesting song imo especially since i personally am listening to a lot of early 80s rock now like talking heads with its quirkiness. also, i'm not surprised that beomgyu is involved with this song cause the more adventurous a txt rock song seems, it's more likely that beomgyu is there *thumbs up*

4.resist (not gonna run away): now this is a teasing type of song.

i like the use of acoustic guitar and percussions here. you can feel that it runs in the same sound such as the killa and tinnitus, but a bit more upbeat. i describe this song as teasing cause this song craves for a huge beat drop with heavy bass. but i do think that it is the somewhat charm of the song as it relates to the lyric of the song of "i can't resist". it creates a certain cat-and-mouse type of feeling when hearing this song, especially with the sparse sound of it that focuses on the higher range of the eq and the 2:15 run time. the vocal is good but i still think that the higher range of the voice is a bit compressed and it especially can be heard here where the vocal is mostly in falsettos. taehyun's falsettos is addicting

5. forty-one winks: whoah dem jointz created a song for txt?

now this is rnb and the underlying vocoder effect makes it funky. this is also such a complete-sounding song with its structure and instrumentality. all the layers of the instruments and samples create a complete sound. i also like how the song plays around with vocal mixing, creating an underwater/telephone effect. it sounds very soft and since i see that this song is also being promoted along over the moon: a good choice for a complimentary promotional song.

kai's voice is a highlight here especially with his high notes. it has a more authenticity to it cause i do imagine that they really enjoy singing this song so props to the vocal direction as well.

6.higher than heaven: ROCK TXT!!! (well pop rock but still)

okay, this sounds a lot like every day6 august with its gritty guitar sound in a feel-good pop-rock setting. i love the text-painting of the high in the lyrics and they raise their note higher when singing it. also a song with a complete form including bridges, and i like how they didn't include the post-chorus to save it for the last chorus as it is replaced with a bridge. makes sense cause it is the longest song in the ep. but that ending is so abrupt tho if they wanna add another post-chorus/outro bar to make it more final then it will be good.

the vocal direction is good tho i do think that soobin could be better cause he seems to lack some soul in the way he sings this song. in comparison to kai and beomgyu, which i think this song suits them well so much, you can hear them enjoying this song so much.

with this song being some sort of reprise of heaven, i have to compare them. it definitely elevates from heaven and is much more subdued compared to higher's brighter, happier sound. tho, if we compare the two, i like heaven more instrumentally cause it seems much more interesting. still would love a much more encore/epilogue to the song, especially since it is the last track of the ep.

closing remarks: as an ep, i do believe that it is solid in the sense that it is more consistent in sound than i thought it would be. not as magical as i predicted but we have a thorough line between each song that can be traced to a rnb/funk sound with a bit of rock in it for both resist and higher than heaven.

as a concept album like minisode 2's 5 stages of grief, this ep tells more of the story of how a person can be a sanctuary when you love them so much. you can see how the relationship moves from the heaven intro to the higher than heaven ending and i like how it becomes. it is consistent in concept and tracklist, even in sound which is getting pretty rare knowing that kpop has lot more filler tracks in a release. though there are some pitfalls.

i do believe that over the moon is txt's weakest title track so far. it sounds too similar to the other tracks that it's harder to stand out. but if it stands out too much, it will make the ep sound consistent. finding that balance is hard, but i do believe that they were capable of it by making the song longer and adding a bridge. songs like heaven, over the moon, danger, and 41 winks will sound much better with a bridge/interlude in them...

final ranking:

12:A song from your preteen years Ooh, interesting, what was big in my musical life between 9 and 12. Let's see. I got into metal at age 7 thanks to my dad showing me Iron Maiden, so needles to say Maiden was My Band in those years. While yes, there were other bands that managed to pique my interest then - things like Linkin Park, System of a Down, Nickleback (people need to chill with the Nickleback hate, yes they're commercial as fuck but dear god Silver Side Up and The Long Road fucked back in the day ok, and I will respect and appreciate those albums for what they were) and my first forray into power metal through Gamma Ray and Helloween and Blind Guardian - let's be real, Maiden was basically my whole life. When I discovered Maiden through their older albums, they were currently fronted by Blaze Bailey. Bless the guy, he tried his best and there are legit good songs on his two albums with Maiden, but you just can't fill Bruce Dickinson's shoes man, nobody can. All we were waiting for was Dickinson's return. So when he did come back in 2000 for the Brave New World album, that felt like the biggest event of my short life, and that album became my hyperfixation and favorite thing on the planet.

Iron Maiden - The Wicker Man I could link the entire album here as my “song of my pre-teen years” but this is the first track off of the album, it’s the start of the obsession, it was one of my favs to drum to back in the day. Lots of good memories with this classic!

15:A song that is a cover by another artist You know what's excellent music? 80s synth-pop / new wave like Tears for Fears.

You know what's even better? When a silly-yet-actually-super-talented youtuber band does it over 30 years later and nails the atmosphere.

Ninja Sex Party - Everybody Wants to Rule the World Listen, the world can say that it wants about the whole Game Grumps / Ninja Sex Party / Danny Sexbang persona, I kinda don't care. Objective truth is, Dan Avidan has fucking pipes, his voice is a fucking treasure, and serious albums like that one cover album from 2016 really show off these guys' potential. I get what their shtick is and I respect the hustle. But dude, when they cover 80s tracks like this one or A-ha's Take on Me? This is where they shine in my opinion. There's something so comforting, so soft and smooth in this version, this song feels like a hug for my brain. I remember multiple occasions in 2016 when this song alone carried me through panic attacks.

18:A song from the year that you were born So I was born in ‘91. Solid year in music, and in metal specifically. Metallica’s Black Album came out in ‘91. Ozzy Osbourne’s No More Tears, Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger, classics everyone knows. Over in Europe in the Nordic countries, the late 80s to early 90s with ‘91 smack dab in the middle was the creation and solidifying of black metal. And while of course I did not listen to black metal as a baby (tho I wish XD) the genre became my favorite genre of metal nowadays. ‘91 was the year when Darkthrone released their first record. When Samael released their first record. And when Bathory, already legends back then, released Twilight of the Gods.

20:A song that has many meanings to you Ha XD Come try to crack the code of Genesis’ The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway storyline hahaha. 23 songs of the most beautiful madness in the world. Listen, I have listened to this album countless times, pondered meanings, I read the story, my dad saw the original show, we saw the officially sanctioned replica of the show together multiple times, with the costumes, the original videos, everything. I understand The Lamb, and at the same time I understand absolutely nothing about The Lamb.

Genesis - In The Cage Make your own meaning. The more you look at The Lamb, the more confused the creature will make you, and that’s the way I like it! Peter Gabriel era Genesis is the best music that humanity’s ever created. You can spend your whole life trying to get it and you won’t and you’ll still be on awe.

19:A song that makes you think about life I tend to think about life through the lens of death most often. Idk how morbid of a person that means I am, or how much of a realist it makes me maybe? I don’t like to spend too much pondering life cause I know it can easily take me somewhere dark in the mind. But I do instinctually think about the value of life and artistic output, and the limited and fragile nature of life itself, when I listen to songs by people I’ve never known or met or seen while they were alive, and yet here they are, alive and well somehow in my hands and ears. How trippy.

Windir - Journey to the End Raising a (non-alcoholic) glass to Valfar for his soul to share in whichever hall of the afterlife he’s at. The soul of the Sogndal scene, unbeatable creative who I firmly believe could have influenced black metal and changed the course of the scene if he hadn’t died walking home in a snowstorm in 2004. Life’s funny like that. Sometimes all it takes is a walk home that you never arrive from. That type of shit makes me ponder life and its weirdly thin meaning. You take a look at the lyrics, it’s almost like Valfar knew what was coming. Nevertheless, Valfar and Windir left us some of the absolute best black metal offerings in the history of the genre. You cannot tell me this guy wasn’t ahead of his time with that synthy / electro / dreamy second half.

25:A song by an artist no longer living Aaah I unknowingly preemptively answered this one with the Windir answer before uh XD Alright, well, let’s talk about another artist that’s passed away then. An artist I actually got to see playing live multiple times before his passing. An artist that we, in the melodeath community, thought was so fucking cool. His self-destruction, which was very vividly broadcasted to the public mind you, was glorified, it was so epic and wild and awesome. The Wildchild, Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom fame. We aspired to be half as cool as him. Because for some strange reason when you’re a teenager, a person showing off how much he can drink and do drugs is cool. A metal musician you admire showing himself blackout drunk and passed out and making himself sick day and day out, was cool.

That’s nuts to me now, as an adult, as someone who has mildly dealt with addiction and even that fucked me up, as someone who works with addicts and sees the damages of this disease day in and day out. We all watched Alexi killing himself slowly in front of us, at shows, on camera, on the tour buses, etc. and thought it was cool. We encouraged him, egged him on. Fucking madness. It claimed him, in the end. In 2020. I saw it coming for a few years so I was zero percent surprised. I know it caught some fans off guard, I don’t understand how.

I saw CoB in 2019, less than a year before the guy passed. I also saw CoB multiple times from 2011 to then, so I saw the decline of the frontman, and I feel you had to willingly be blind to it to not see it. In 2019 the guy was a living skeleton. No energy, barely able to play on stage, haggard unfocused eyes, caved in face, skin over bones. I read reviews of this 2019 show, people wrote about how he looked good and had energy and was “at his best”, like?! Was it denial about their favorite musician’s health status? Or pandering to the music industry, unable to review a show honestly? That performance was beyond difficult to watch. It hurt. Still hurts when I think back on it. I was physically uncomfortable. We left before the end. I couldn’t stand watching a literal wraith shredding guitar on stage knowing full well this night too would end with him passed out drunk at the bar after.

It was a whole story, Alexi’s antics. It caused tension and conflict within the band, and of course, how can it not be harmful to watch your frontman and friend do this to themselves. But metal was and unfortunately still is a culture of excess and substances, and nobody did it “better” than the Wildchild. We all thought it looked rad, but in the end we watched this guy die for two decades. When the news of his passing came out in 2020 (from an overdose of lots of different substances on top of liver disease and basically an organ breakdown) I cried a ton. For the reality behind this precious piece of my childhood and teenage years that was CoB; but mostly for how unhealthy the live music scene can be and how it can encourage artists down very dark paths. I don’t understand anymore how watching people get fucked up on substances is supposed to be cool. So I do my part when I can, to honor Alexi Laiho and other musicians like him whom addiction claimed, and to remind whoever reads me that alcoholism and drug abuse isn’t “cool”. Taking shit doesn’t make anyone more manly or more metal or impressive. Addiction shouldn’t be trendy. It cost us too many great musicians already.

🍒 - We have actually spent a full day, given the area we’re in there’s a decent amount to do and he usually wants to go out rather than stay in. So usually we go downtown, look at murals, feed ducks, go shopping, or visit public gardens!

🍎 - he’s booooring and likes water most.

🍉 - He’s an atheist but I think he grew up religious. He’s pretty comfortable around religion and spirituality.

🍑 - Pim’s a lot more comfortable giving gifts. He gets super flustered when he’s receiving a gift. He does love it he’s just not used to it poor guy. He probably prefers receiving small gifts like sweets or smth rather than big grand gifts.

🥭 - he has a plush puppy that’s weighted he’s had since he was a tadpole and a few decorative ones like a Gwimbly from his fav game growing up, a lion, and a few others. The favorite has to be the puppy.

🍌 - We specifically both ban the Big Light™️, it’s overstimulating and we’re both autistic. They prefer softer warm lighting but 9/10 times he’ll want natural light.

🍋 - His anxiety and ability to see when someone just isn’t working.

🍋‍🟩 - oh 100%. He takes theater traditions especially hard. Wouldn’t find him breaking mirrors, saying the M-word in a theater, doesn’t say good luck to actors, that sort of things.

🍏 - I think he always knew he was queer in some way (he’s bi and genderfluid in my hc) but his family does not look like the kind to be super accepting. Probably had some sort of crush on an actor, panicked because that’s not a woman, and ultimately looked up “I’m a boy but I have a crush on a boy.” Then down the “Am I Gay”? Quotev pipeline.

🍐 - Pim definitely fidgets, he’ll do little hand tricks with what he’s holding. He’ll click pens and undo paperclips and just generally mess with things. Doesn’t like sitting still.

🥝 - nobody should trust me to do their make up. I think Pim has a bit of a baby face going but does get a bit anxious with aging or stress lines, so maybe a little bit of covering. But not a lot.

🫒 - oh he LOVES hugs. Huge on physical touch. He’s not even 4 feet tall so he also loves receiving hugs and cuddles. The only thing is he doesn’t like being picked up too suddenly or by ppl he doesn’t know (very easy to manhandle him and he doesn’t appreciate it)

🫐 - I think he’s a poet, def a right brained person tho.

🍇 - making out. Passionately.

🥥 - Pim probably wants to get into more artistically inclined areas. He current likes reading or doodling in notes and such, not a lot of time to do much else though. He is also super musical. He has a keyboard he likes to make silly little songs and jingles to.

🍅 - I don’t know!!! I don’t like a lot of gifts, so he struggles. He did get me this cool Los campesinos shirt the other day tho

🌶️ - I don’t think he drinks when he’s sick but a bowl of soup and cozy blanket seems to do the trick for him.

🫚 - he doesn’t like a lot of greasy or unhealthy foods but there’s not much he will not under any circumstances not eat.

🥕 - Little Pim probably said he hated veggies but as an adult he loves them.

🧅 - anything emotional. Movies, books, shows, songs, just about anything can make him cry and he loves that. He’s a very emotional guy and super in touch with his sensitivity

🌽 - His fav animal is probably cats. Quiet yet affectionate. He’s definitely scared of most wild animals (lions, tigers, bears, I don’t think he’s scared of snakes or bugs though. Oh and koalas and kangaroos. Fuck those guys. They’re so scary…)

🥦 - he cannot stand ppl chewing with their mouth open. Being manhandled too he especially hates or undermined because he’s an optimist and a little naive.

🥒 - I think he’s got claustrophobia. It just makes sense in my big beautiful brain.

🥬 - He names his inanimate objects and greets them or apologizes if he bumps into them. Also refuses to sit elsewhere, he has “his seat” on a couch. If someone takes it he won’t complain but he will be a little disappointed.

🫛 - oh he loves them. Pet names are one of his favorite things in a relationship. He mostly says things like “love”, “hun”, “dear”, “sweetie” but usually doesn’t do pet names like “bunny”, “darling”. Babe is a rare one

🫑 - Pim is very casual about death, he’s definitely seen some shit and doesn’t seem to really react. If it’s someone he’s so much as aquatinted with or it’s a sad story he will cry but generally he’s very empathetic yet jaded. He wants to travel the world and get married and have a kid before he dies.

🥑 - he’s REALLY into games from the 80s. Like super into it. He’d run a whole YouTube channel about it. Plus I think he’s also a sports fan just not very open about it. But MASSIVE sports fan.

🍠 - I think he reads or daydreams when he’s bored

1. rv run devil run = 10/10 SOOOOOOOO perfect. loved the new arrangement love how they distributed the lines love the outfits love the execution like omggggg. this + be natural and a blunt

2. tvxq psycho = 9.5/10 was actually really impressed by this even though i wished they had done a seulrene song. other psycho covers currently found dead in a ditch. loved the arrangement (i do feel like they could've made it more tvxq tho) and i like how they distributed the lines. everything was so cunty. we need more male artists covering female artists like this

2.5 boa end of a day = 9/10 so beautiful and so respectful i literally couldn't help but cry. i'm so happy it was her that sang this. it's different from the ballads that she has in her discography and she did it so well with so much feeling. i'd give this a 10 if it was a shinee member singing it

The adderall is Not having its desired effects (task initiation) just like all the other adhd meds I've been prescribed so far and is instead having other effects (finding new and exciting ways to avoid task initiation, typically focused on music for some reason? I wrote up a whole rambly rant last week about my top 100 songs and it's currently rotting in my drafts. If anyone knows of a link between adhd meds and music lmk?)

So, on the note that I have to finish my mom's christmas gift (a digital watercolor portrait- it's almost done!) and finish my part of the project before my group meets to discuss it in like 30 minutes, as well as the note that one of my neighbors is blasting Last Christmas by Wham super loud and that's very inconsiderate of them, I present a list of christmas songs that *don't* make me want to rip out my hair when I hear them. (Tho some songs I hate are included at the end).

-Tiny Tree Christmas by Guster. I think this came from a christmas song sampler album from target, of all places? It's good though, I feel it conveys a home-nostalgia feeling very well, and it doesn't get any airplay which means I can continue to enjoy it without fears of hearing it in the grocery store.

-Another song from that sampler album: Get Down For The Holidays by Jenny 0. I really liked the effects on the voice in this one when I was a kid.

-Also when I was a kid I liked *another another* song from that sampler album: Mrs. Claus Ain't Got Nothing On Me by Little Jackie, and I still like it but when I was a preteen I played it WAY too much and got sick of it. What can ya do :/.

-Marshmallow World by Darlene Love off the album A Christmas Gift For You. I only mention the album because it was a collaboration album, and all the songs by one of the other artists, The Ronettes, became grocery store christmas music rotation staples but none of the other artists' songs did. I don't know why this track was left behind, it's one of my favorite Christmas songs.

-the whole album Oy To The World by The Klezmonauts. It's traditional christmas songs done in klezmer style (according to their absolutely ancient website I just found, it's intended for interfaith families, which some of my extended family is so I bet they introduced it to us). I fucking love klezmer music and need more of it in my life.

-God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kinga by the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan: it is so weird to me that normal ass bands put out christmas albums... especially when this album is called "barenaked for the holidays". It genuinely seems like a background joke in a sitcom or something, but this is one of the only songs I actually like by the barenaked ladies, lol. This is also one of the only christmas songs that explictly talks about god that don't summon my teenagehood edgy atheist self to scoff and scowl cause I'm too busy humming along (dont worry, ive become less of a tool since then, now i'm just a normal atheist).

-Carol of the Bells (Trans-Siberian Orchestra cover): I was a band kid who wanted to be an orchestra kid, so naturally i think this is cool. I was also a choir kid so we did a less-cool version of this once, but alas I am an alto- being an alto was not a great experience for me both for gender reasons (I wanted to be a tenor so fucking bad it made me look stupid) and because alto parts notoriously suck shit to sing and are not fun.

-Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano: It's a peppy, catchy tune, and one of the only grocery store christmas music rotation staples I like alongside The Ronette's Sleigh Ride (*maybe* Jingle Bell Rock but if it's not the Bobby Helms original it's on thin ice).

-Holly Jolly Christmas by Burl Ives. I don't lile a lot of "traditional" christmas songs (read as: one man crooning softly) but my family had a little stuffed cat decoration that sang this when you pressed its foot so I guess it's nostalgic to me.

-Little Saint Nick by the Beach Boys. I just think it's funny.

-like 2 specific versions of Silent Night. Of course, I don't know which specific versions I like and always get excited when I hear this song (and then I get dissapointed!). They have to be a cappalla, slightly mournful, contemplative pieces for me to like them, I think. And the singers are altos or lower, voice tone wise: I am still alto-appreciative.

Anyway in the name of haterism, the christmas song that *most* makes me want to rip my hair out (excluding low hanging fruit like songs/covers from christmas episodes of TV shows) is Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartny. I maintain that this is a Temporary Secretary-level dud, especially with the terrible synths heard throughout the piece. And you gotta understand that I normally love and cherish terrible synths, in fact I pride myself on my love of albums where a band is just learning how synths work and they isolate their whole audience by using too many synths (broadsword and the beast by jethro tull is a personal favorite of this genre, and I really regret to say it because I love it so so much and it's one of my top albums of all time and it's so so good but ELO's TIME is this too...). That is to say, you should take me seriously when I say the synths seriously detract from the piece by being awful.

Dishonorable mentions include I'm Gonna Lasso Santa Claus by Brenda Lee (because it portrays the singer as being too childishly naive *not for believing in Santa, but for wanting to help less fortunate kids* and that shitty, "it's childish to care about inequality" perspective genuinely pisses me off to the point where hearing this song makes me need to take a breather. Still preferrable to Mccartney, though...). Also: pretty much anything that tries to be explicitly funny, because they're never funny and they oftentimes aren't well composed since they're "just novelty songs" that assume they can stand on their "comedic value" (ex: The 12 Pains of Christmas, Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, the Alvin and the Chipmunks song, anything by a stand up comedian, etc).

Y/n Miya-Sakusa was scared. No- scratch that- you were terrified.

You wouldn’t show it to your captors though- your husbands taught you to never show fear- but Jesus Christ- you were terrified not only for yourself but more so for your unborn child- a child you didn’t even know existed until half an hour before you got kidnapped from your own room. For the past hour that you’ve been tied to a chair in the middle of the room, they haven’t touched your body. The same couldn’t be said for your face. Half of your face was covered in slightly dried blood; blood that came a wound you got when they slammed your head against the edge of your beside drawer to knock you unconscious, and a spilt lip that was still bleeding slightly from when they punched you when you spat at the face of the person who demanded your husbands’ locations and the locations of all your warehouses. The thought alone made you scoff- you’re no rat. Unlike whoever the hell gave your home’s location away. Your husbands were going to be so pissed when they find you gone and your shared room thrashed about.

Sitting on the wooden chair was become a pain in the ass. Literally. You couldn’t even escape because of the metal cuffs attached to your wrists, forearms, and ankles and they took your daggers away. You’re stuck and all you can do it wait. Wait for either your husbands to burst through the door or wait for your promised torture session and possible death.

Minutes- hours- who knows how long later, two men in black barged into the room, startling you from your daydream carrying knives with guns in their holsters. Well... looks like your Omi and Tsumu are too late huh...

“Ready, Princess?” thing 1 with an eyepatch said with a smile, showing his yellow teeth, “Boss said we gots to kill ye before yer husbands get here. Ye know, so they barge in ‘ere only to see yer bleeding body. Even better if they get to see yer naked corpse, doncha think?”

“Boss said not to rape her tho-” thing 1 interrupted thing 2, “what boss doesn’t know won’t hurt ‘im. And besides- I wanna leave Miya a surprise for stabbing my eye.”

And just as thing 1 started moving towards you, a scream was heard from outside the door and echoed into the room, sending shivers down things 1 and 2’s spines. You, on the hand, smiled. They’re here... fucking finally.

“What was that?” Thing 2 looked around nervously. Huh- he must be new to the business. Poor guy he won’t make it far at this point. Thing 1 shrugged, “eh who cares? There’s no one we can’t kill.” he boasted. Dumb overconfident pig.

Another scream rang through followed by a shout of terror, “THEY’RE HERE!” that was cut off as a loud gunshot echoed through the walls followed by a series of bangs and clangs. The familiar sound brought you off guard- they brought everyone? You were sure that that clang was from Michinari’s favorite weapon- his metal bat. Where were you and who took you that they felt it necessary to have everyone here? You were brought out of your train of thoughts when you realized that all of a sudden everything and everyone was silent. All you can hear was your own heartbeat.

“Ah fuck it-” thing 1 looked at your form with a crazed look in his eyes that sent shivers down your spine.

“Dude what are you-”

“Well it’s obvious we won’t make it out alive-”

“Wait what?”

“-might as well have fun before we die, ey?”

With that said he closed the gap between you two. You felt your mind blank as tears started forming in your eyes. The moment he ripped Atsumu’s shirt from your person, the tears fell along with the loudest scream you could muster, “OMI! ATS-” you were cut off as thing 1 smacked your cheek with the butt of his gun, “shut up ye lil bitch. Yer not leavin til I get my f-”

Thing 2 was suddenly down- a hole on the side of his head. None of you even heard the door open so that meant Shinsuke was here- well him or Rintarou since they’re the stealthiest in your family.

Thing 1 suddenly stood up straight and placed his hands up with his palms up and blocking your view from whoever was with you two in the room, “hey uhhh I was forced to do this, mates- it- it wasn’t anything personal, yea?” Sat on a wooden chair in just your undergarments and the remnants of one of your husbands’ shirt, you let a small smile appear on your face. They’re here. You and your little bean are safe now.

Rintarou stepped out of the shadows and from his voice you could tell he looked bored, “so... where is she?”

Thing 1 shook his head, having lost his voice the moment his eyes met the bored yet malicious ones of one Suna Rintarou- one of the deadliest assassins of the Inarizaki family, and prayed that the fox wouldn’t notice your bleeding form behind him.

The moment you let out a sob, he pushed thing 1 away and squatted in front of you. And he was not happy with what he saw was done to you-

He saw your bloody and bruised face. He saw your shaking hands and the tears you let flow from your eyes. But what angered him the most was the fact that someone he viewed as his little sister lost the brightness is her eyes.

Any chance the idiot had with reasoning with him was gone.

“Congratulations, idiot. You’ve secured a spot in our personal dungeon.” Rintarou smiled as he heard a sharp thump before the telltale sound of a body hitting the ground, “you didn’t hit him too hard, did you, Shinsuke-san?”

“Not hard enough.”

“Ok- let’s get these off of you before your hubbies come in here,” with that said both men started unlocking the cuffs trapping you onto the chair. After freeing you, you were immediately hit with the feeling of fatigue and let your body fall onto the person closest to you. Shinsuke caught your semi-limp body and immediately became worried but calmed down as he felt your breaths. He arranged your position so that you were laying across his lap, facing the roof of the cell. Rintarou settled himself beside Shinsuke after texting Kiyoomi your location- receiving an immediate reply that they’ll be there as soon as Atsumu is out of his blood haze. Shinsuke brushed his hand through your hair but immediately stopped when you whimpered, “hit- t-table- home.”

The two men exchanged worried glances when you stared up at them with your eyelids slowly closing. Rintarou tapped your cheek, “Y/n-chan, stay awake- how do you feel right now?”

“Aish of all the questions Rin-”

“B-baby...”

“Kiyoomi-san and Tsumu will be he-”

“M-my baby...” their eyes widened as you shakily placed your hand onto your tummy before falling limp in Shinsuke’s arms. He refrained from panicking when he saw your chest still rising and falling in patterns- you probably fainted from exhaustion.

“Holy shi-”

“Y/N!”

The moment the two saw your limp body they assumed the worst- but as Atsumu was about to yell out his rage and sorrow, Osamu appeared from the shadows and hit the back of his head, “she’s breathing, you moron.”

“I knew that, shitface.”

“Who ya callin’ shitface, ya pig?”

“Who ya callin’ a pi-”

“Aran,” Kiyoomi calmly spoke as he turned to face the hitman- ignoring his husband and brother-in-law, “lead the way out- make sure that there will be no delays. We must take Y/n to Motoya immediately- we don’t know the extent of her wounds- however they look... less than favorable as of the moment.”

At the reminder of your current condition, the twins shutted up, “Osamu,”

“Yeah, Omi-san?”

“Bring that thing with us.” was muttered with great disdain while his finger was pointed towards the unconscious thing 1.

And so they left the building covered in blood with neutral faces.

They may not show it but they were livid.

They didn’t miss your tear and blood stained face nor the the fact that your shirt was ripped right down the middle.

They knew what was going to happen to you had they been a second late.

“Hitoshi and Heisuke are already tracking the rats- we’ll have them in the basement by tonight,” informed Kiyoomi’s trustworthy gunsmith, Tsukasa Iizuna.

“They better- only question now is who gets first dibs on the assholes.”

As they settled into the car, Shinsuke told them the news of your latest surprise. He knew that they’d go even more ballistic were they to find out during the check-up from Motoya. But since they were in a closed and moving car with you on their laps, they couldn’t really do much except stiffen and let their rage grow stronger- and he looks forward to seeing what they’ll do to the bastards tonight. Shinsuke, above all things, is a man of honor- and what he hates above all things, are traitors.

“PLEASE! I’M SORRY! PLEA- AHHH” Thing 1 screamed as Kiyoomi dug his dagger deeper into the man’s shoulder- forming a hollow hole of sort.

“Just a little more... I want to see if your bones are clean or if they need to cleansed as well-”

“Omi-omi~ I want my turn !” whined Atsumu as he crossed his arms and pouted at his husband.

Kiyoomi rolled his eyes, “you had your turn five minutes ago when you spilled acid onto his legs- it’s my turn now.” with that said, Kiyoomi ripped his dagger from the man’s flesh without a warning and grabbing a bowl from the prisoner’s ‘meal’, poured the bowl of scalding hot soup into the hollow flesh.

And as the man wailed, the two traitors squirmed in fear as they awaited their turns.

“We don’t usually go to this extent but what can we say...”

“No one messes with our wife.”

listening to the waves crash on the sand, the calling of seagulls, the laughter of other couples and families around you

as the sun started setting, you were leaning into mark’s side, his arm draped around your shoulders

he wrapped the both of you in a blanket as you reminisced about your relationship

“remember how you were scared shitless to ask me out? i thought you were going to faint”

“i was not scared! i just ate a bad sandwich that day” mark grumbled, hiding his face in your shoulder

the sky was now a mix of purple and pink hues

you immediately jumped up, pulling out your phone, to snap a picture of the gorgeous scenery

you were already on your way to surprise him with your own small gift, having him rush you was adding to your nerves

this would be be first official valentine’s day you’d be spending together so you wanted everything to be perfect

you enthusiastically knock on his door, in which he opened instantly

he pulled you inside, dragging you to the backyard where he set up a nice picnic blanket with paints and canvases on a small table

you couldn’t help but admire all the effort he put in

you gave him a quick hug, your hold lingering on him for longer than he thought

you handed him your gift bag, filled with snacks he loved and a panda plushie with a heart attached to it

he pouted at how adorable your gift was, pulling you down to sit with him

“thank you for the gifts, babe! i hope you also like out little painting date!”

this boy would wake you up at the crack of dawn, practically jumping on you to go biking with him

you had flashbacks to the previous night where you agreed to go with him but immediately regretted staying up to watch new episodes of your favourite drama

jeno dragged you around your shared apartment like a rag doll, helping you change and stay awake

you knew how excited he was to take you biking for the first time, you didn’t want to crush his spirit

so you started slapping your cheeks and jumping up and down to remain awake, which jeno found amusing

you followed closely behind him as he led you through the trail

his initial idea was to get to the top before sunrise so you both could watch it together

but once he reached half way, jeno had an inkling that you were way behind

he was right

he stopped completely to wait for you, more concerned about how you were holding up rather than getting to the top

you were huffing and puffing

“why’d you stop? we have to get to the top!”

“have a sip first, babe” he pats your back as he hands you his water bottle

you felt bad for holding him back, but his concerned expression eased your mind

he refused to let you watch him as he did the finishing touches

the chef revealed each cake one by one, when he got to yours, he gave you both a soft smile

as some of y’all know, jaemin used to be a short speed track racer

so naturally he was down for your idea of going ice skating for valentine’s day

you weren’t aware of how skilled he was at skating — as you yourself were merely a beginner

so when you saw how knowledgeable jaemin was when you entered the ice skating rink, you started feeling nervous 

jaemin helped strap your skates on, carefully guiding you to the rink

you were still under the impression he was just as bad as you, but once you both stepped on the ice, he was immediately stable

god, he could even skate backwards 

this must be so embarrassing for him to see 

you started pouting,

“i didn’t know you could skate so well! i’m so embarrassed, i can barely skate two metres!”

thirty minutes later, one really bruised butt cheek and some elbow bruises from falling down so much, you started getting the hang of it

jaemin let go of your hands and let you skate towards him, once you reached him, he wrapped you in his arms tightly, still gliding on the ice

your faces were so close, you could feel his breath fan your cheeks

you gave him a quick peck, mumbling a quiet ‘i love you’

jaemin couldn’t contain how adorable you were, giving you another quick kiss before telling you he loved you more than life itself

you both skated for a while, listening to throwback love songs playing over the speakers

he rarely let go of your hand, even when you insisted you were getting the hang of skating alone 

he treated you to some french fries and ice cream after you finished skating

jisung didn’t pull away, smirking to himself before suddenly pecking your lips

jisung also wasn’t usually the one to initiate affection, so this was just another surprise you could never get over

you both giggled, pointing out the different constellations you could make out

you chatted about random things, from video games to school, to when jaemin yelled at chenle’s s/o for making chocolate covered strawberries

everything felt at ease when you were with jisung

he knew you didn’t want such a big fuss for valentine’s day, but you could have never suspected he’d do this all for you

Hey, I just read your post on ADHD/EFDD and was just wondering if you have read any research articles on this and if you have, could you tell me which ones because it all sounds super interesting and I need to choose a topic for my psych lit review and I’m thinking about doing something to do with all the stigma around and misconceptions about different mental health disorders.. it’s totally okay if not tho, I know it’s a big ask, but thanks anyway

The first person I think of when discussing the term EFDD is Dr. Russell Barkley. He’s one of the leading ADHD experts, and has been a spearhead for studying executive dysfunction in people with ADHD for decades. Very much ahead of his time compared to the DSM. I’ve had his book “Taking Charge of Adult ADHD” recommended to me so many times, but have yet to read it.

Here’s an interesting article/study on EFDD! They found that “ADHD [is] associated with deficits in inhibition, managing one’s attention, self-directed speech and rule-following, self-motivation, and even self-awareness [...] ADHD therefore involves deficits in self-restraint, [...] selfsensing and imagery, self-control of emotion, and self-directed play for problem-solving.”

Thank you for motivating me to look up some articles, because I learned some new things, too! For instance, they assert that ADHD could also be called SRDD (Self-Regulation Deficit Disorder), but conclude the article by saying either SRDD or EFDD fits better than ADHD, and that the terms could be used interchangeably, because SR (self-regulation) and EF (executive function) are effectively talking about the same things. So his assertion is that even if the name ADHD never changes, it can still be scientifically classified as either of the other terms. I believe in recent years he’s preferred EFDD more and more.

[note that the above article/study is from 2011, back when we were on the DSM-IV, so a lot of research has been done since then]

If that article’s a bit wordy or you want something more visual and up-to-date, here’s a really detailed PowerPoint presentation used during the 2018 ADHD Symposium! It’s long but well-organized so you can just read the big headers or you can read all the bullet points explaining it. Keep in mind this was a lecture, so some of it probably made more sense in person. I’m glad I read this, because I realize the terminology I’ve used is slightly off: according to the Symposium, there aren’t “subtypes” of ADHD, but the different names (ADHD-PI, ADHD-PH, and ADHD-C) are really just used to show the prevalence of certain symptoms in that individual. So they’re all terms for ADHD, but “subtype” was poor word choice on my part. 

Oh! I just found a video of him giving a lecture in 2012 using many of the same PowerPoint slides! Here ya go! It’s a bit longer than the other videos I’ve linked below (13min), but it might make the slides easier to interpret :)

Here’s one where he talks about our Time-Blindness! (below) I was going to pick a couple favorite quotes to give you an idea, but that’d wind up being a transcript of the whole video because HE GETS IT. This is from 2014, but I CANNOT recommend it enough!!! He mentions that ADHD doesn’t have a deficit of attention, but rather a deficit of intention. He describes us as having a near-sighted sense of time, and talks about deadlines, “laziness,” etc.

 ALSO he talks about how our brains DON’T CONNECT our knowledge to our performance (back of brain to front) like everyone else’s, so we have the same level of knowledge and intelligence, but can’t access and use it the way others can. This is why teaching skills and organization/memory/time-management tips isn’t helpful -- we can learn them, but our knowledge and action centers are separated, so actually doing them/sticking with them is just as hard as before. 

If you don’t watch the whole thing, at least skip to 3:29 cause that part’s really funny and relatable (ok the whole thing is relatable):

And of course, I highly recommend the YouTube channel How to ADHD! I have a couple friends who work on it, and they REALLY know their stuff! (They’re the ones who taught me during a game night that RSD isn’t a real term and it should be called “rejection-sensitivity” as part of the emotional dysregulation umbrella) 

I went looking and found this video (below) has the BEST explanation of it that I’ve seen in such a concise, entertaining way. I hadn’t seen this one before, but it even covers some of the things I mentioned in that post your ask is about! Especially the Internal Restlessness that I mentioned as the true “hyperactivity” we all share; even though some of us also express outward hyperactivity, both presentations come from the same restlessness in our brains.
