By the time Sue Shusterman turns away from the bench at the overlook and back toward the trailhead, she knows the paddleboarders are out in force 300 yards away on the gleaming blue surface of Chatfield Reservoir.  

She knows the high runoff waters have flooded the roots of Chatfield’s willows and cottonwoods, and that the first spring-green layers of the foothills rise to the west like soft fabric. 

How she acquired these life-affirming memories is at first a mystery, since Shusterman is blind and is heading back toward the parking lot making her usual sweep of the path in front with her ever-present white cane.  

But then a friendly voice emerges from the phone that Shusterman is pointing toward the path from her other hand.

A little to the left to stay on the paved path. Looks like there’s a trail all the way down to the beach, about 75 yards, if you wanted to go. I’ll just be here watching, let me know if you need anything. 

The voice is from a live, trained human guide FaceTiming through Shusterman’s phone camera on the Aira ability-assist app. Sight-impaired people have been using Aira’s guides to make it easier to do anything from navigating an airport to filling out an online job form. Now, all 42 Colorado state parks like Chatfield are geofenced to allow any visitor to use Aira for free to stroll the trails with a helpful set of eyes. 

The Aira guides seemingly effortlessly offer what a blind hiker either needs, or wants. If there’s a dangerous steep drop-off on the right, they warn. If the hiker would rather know if the sneezeweed is in bloom or the sailboats are luffing through a turn, Aira offers that instead.

For Shusterman, trying Aira as an outdoors adventure for the first time, the allure was simple: “Independence.” 

“So she’s doing, I think, a phenomenal job of including the necessary safety things, but the perks of the scenery, too,” Shusterman said, as she paused during a conversation with an Aira guide based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “She’s doing great.”

State accessibility officials recently announced the expansion of Aira to state parks grounds, after previously providing Aira free for other state-related functions such as navigating a government building or getting help on an online site or filling out forms. Colorado cannot control the cellphone signal, though, so parks officials encourage visitors to try Aira at a familiar or close-in park space before ranging farther afield with it. Popular parks like Staunton or Golden Gate contain pockets where signals are not strong. 

For consumers buying access on their own, Aira costs about $50 for 30 minutes of assistance a month. Private employers and governments often buy package access to Aira and other accessibility apps for all employees to use. State accessibility coordinator Theresa Montano, who is blind and accompanied Shusterman on her Chatfield walk, said Amazon buys access so that sight-impaired shipping center employees can navigate steps to pack orders.

Montano uses Aira at her state job, saying the guides on the app can share her computer screen and help her get through an online task in 30 minutes that might take her four hours without help or through older accessibility tools. 

Adding Aira for state-owned lands was wrapped into the overall $250,000 budget for free Aira use on state property and with state websites. The additional utility is an obvious plus, Montano said. 

“This gives blind people the same opportunity to come and enjoy it by themselves or with their family if they want to, and be independent,” she said...

Shusterman walked away taking more from the big picture experience, rather than any particular scenic detail. 

“For me, it was, you know what, I could go for a walk on this path, and I could feel completely safe, and I would enjoy a nice walk and get some exercise, in an unfamiliar area,” Shusterman said. “It’s definitely a real confidence boost for me.”

You wake up slowly, feeling a sudden chill in the air. It was still dark out and you wonder if it's just your imagination or a lingering dream. But when your teeth start to chatter, you realize that the room feels colder than it did when you went to bed.

Despite some upgrades over the years, certain aspects of your old apartment building remained on the 'vintage' side – including the heating system. Recently, your building manager repaired the radiator valves in your unit. They had been malfunctioning when you tried to turn them on during random cool days in the fall.

And because all weather reports in your area warned the public about a record-setting drop in temperatures this season, you needed the heaters to work, most especially on a day like today—the official first day of winter.

You roll over onto your side and interrupt Seungcheol's rhythmic snoring with a nudge.

His drowsiness is replaced by concern when he sees your bottom lip quivering. "What's wrong?"

"Did you turn the heater off?"

He immediately snorts at your accusatory tone. "Me? No, that’s all you, babe."

Seungcheol typically felt cold easily while your internal body temperature ran warmer. You suggested that he get thicker blankets or try sleeping in additional layers of clothing. Instead, he preferred to turn up the thermostat so he could sleep comfortably in his boxers. You, being the more cost-effective-minded half of this relationship, would switch it off in the middle of the night to save money on your energy bill.

However, last night was no joke! You didn’t mind the heater running all night.

"I didn't. It was freezing so I kept it on!"

"Welcome to my world." Before he rolls over to go back to sleep, you grab onto his shirt.

"Can you please check the valve? I think it broke again."

He shakes his head. “That’s impossible. We just got it fixed!”

“Just double-check, please?” You give him your best puppy-eye look, not wanting to leave the warm confines of your blankets.

He sighs and gives a quick nod before getting out of bed.

As soon as he is out of the warm sheets and feels the cold air on his bare chest, he curses under his breath. Before taking another step, he retrieves his hoodie from the nearby chair where he had tossed it the night before.

After putting it on, he makes his way toward the radiator on the other side of the room. He crouches down to inspect the valve.

"Huh. That's weird," he murmurs.

Before you can ask about what he noticed, he stands up and walks into the living room to check the controls there.

A minute later, he returns, visibly frustrated. He picks up his cellphone from the nightstand and makes a call.

“You’re right. It’s broken again,” he huffs, preparing to leave a voicemail for your building manager about the broken heating system in your unit.

There’s something about him taking control like this that turns you on. He stands by his side of the bed, in his boxers and hoodie, with a calm but stern voice.

It was the same voice he used when you permitted him to boss you around in bed. Another chill travels down your spine but not from the cold.

When he hangs up, he reaches for his joggers, which were laid on the same chair he reclaimed his hoodie from, and slips back into bed with you.

“Fucking nightmare,” he grunted. “Too bad it’s the weekend and we can’t get this fixed right away. Guess we’ll have stop by the store to grab a couple of space heaters right when it opens.”

Unfortunately, that wasn’t for another few hours.

As he buries himself deeper into the cozy comfort of your sheets, a shiver runs down his spine due to the draft that envelops your apartment. ”We can’t live like this,” he pouts.

With a mischievous smile playing on your lips, you respond, "You know, there’s another way we can warm up and make the most out of this situation while we wait for the stores to open."

“And what’s that?” He mumbles curiously from under the collar of his hoodie.

You scoot closer to him, wedging one arm between his body and the mattress, and encircle his waist with the other. Then, you gently slide your hand up underneath his hoodie.

“Ahh, your hands feel like ice!” he squeaks in surprise, his body stiffening at the contact.

“Or maybe they’ll warm up quicker if I go this way?” You slide both hands lower, past his waistband to palm his ass cheeks.

"Okay, okay! I get your point!" he half-yelps and chuckles at your mischief.

When his laughter subsides, he asks, "Wouldn't this be more effective with direct skin-on-skin contact? Like...without clothes on?"

The way he catches his lower lip with his teeth and cocks his eyebrow makes your pulse quicken.

You pretend to be ignorant, saying, "Well, I'm no scientist, so I wouldn't really know." You give his cheeks another firm squeeze.

"Well then, we should find out." He moves away slightly from your touch, just enough to remove his hoodie. "You know, for science!"

You suppress a laugh, fully aware of his playful intentions. “And if it doesn't work?”

He kicks off his boxers and pulls you flush against him. “Then I know a foolproof way for us to work up a sweat.”

When he nestles into your neck and begins kissing you, you let out a sigh, melting into him. You barely notice him removing your bottoms.

He hums and pulls your top up and over your head. The moment your bare skin touches his, a wave of sensation rushes through your body, causing you to gasp.

"I mean, if it's for science," you moan in acquiescence.

As his kisses trail down to your breasts, he asks, "Are you warm enough now?"

"Why don't you move a little lower and we'll reassess then?"

He laughs softly against your skin but doesn't object. Instead, he does what he’s told, and you spend the next few hours tangled up in bed until sunrise.

The stunning Israeli operations that led to the near-simultaneous explosions of pagers belong to thousands of Hezbollah members on Tuesday and then, a day later, walkie-talkies are remarkable for their sophistication and planning. They demonstrate, once again, the extraordinary skill of Israeli intelligence. Yet for all their tactical brilliance, will these operations help Israel defeat Hezbollah?

There’s much we don’t know, both about the immediate effects of the attacks, Israel’s decision-making calculus, and the Hezbollah response. With these caveats in mind, a first look suggests that the operation is clearly a humiliation and a setback for Hezbollah and may weaken the group in the long term as well as disrupt it today. However, the Israel-Hezbollah balance remains dangerously even, and Israel cannot count on the attacks to make it safer in the long term. Escalation to a disastrous all-out war cannot be ruled out. On Thursday, Israel launched at least 50 airstrikes on southern Lebanon, according to a Lebanese report.

For now, at least, Hezbollah as an organization faces major disruptions. The operations killed at least 37 people, the vast majority of them fighters, and wounded thousands. Many of those wounded have lost hands or eyes or are otherwise less able to fight—a remarkably effective operation against an elite fighting force. The loss of so many fighters would make it harder for Hezbollah to field a military force to fight Israel. In addition, how Hezbollah fighters would communicate with commanders is unclear given that every means of electronic communication seems to be an Israeli weapon.

The operation may also make ordinary Hezbollah fighters more afraid and cautious in the future. Part of the reason that Hezbollah fighters used pagers was because the group’s leaders believed, probably correctly, that Israel had penetrated their cellphone communications. If ordinary pagers and walkie-talkies are also dangerous, how can Hezbollah safely communicate? Even when Hezbollah restores communications with new equipment, its fighters may fear that their technologies will turn against them. Such fear is its own weapon: When fighters doubt their equipment, the validity of messages from their leaders, and other day-to-day basics of military operations, they are less effective. In addition, as Eliot Cohen points out, organizations with security flaws often tear themselves apart looking for spies and make themselves dysfunctional in the name of protecting their secrets.

The attacks are also embarrassing. Hezbollah is a strong organization with deep roots in Lebanon and can survive such humiliation, but it diminishes the group’s credibility within the country. This, in turn, hurts recruitment and may make rival communities and political blocs in Lebanon more willing to stand up to the group—though given their weakness and dysfunction, this seems like a stretch.

Israel also seems to be trying to send a message to Hezbollah that it will continue to impose heavy costs on the group. Since Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas launched its attack, Israel has killed senior Hezbollah leaders and field commanders, attacked Hezbollah’s forces and infrastructure in southern Lebanon with airstrikes and artillery, and otherwise hit the group again and again. The pager and walkie-talkie attacks, while clever and unusual, are part of a broader campaign.

The effect at home is also important. The Oct. 7 attack was an intelligence failure for Israel, and restoring the services’ puissant reputations is important to reassure the Israeli population that, despite their dangerous neighborhood, they can live their lives knowing their government can protect them. Politically, of course, the skill of the operation also bolsters support for leaders such as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who can claim credit for it—a particularly important objective for these figures given the current turbulence in Israeli politics.

Set against all this, however, are several costs and limits that Israeli leaders clearly believe are low or at least worth paying but that may turn out to be higher than they anticipate.

At the very least, the attacks makes it harder for Hezbollah to accept any peace deal independent of one linked to a Gaza cease-fire, which would remove the group’s justification for continued fight. It would be politically difficult for Hezbollah to accept a deal that reduces its presence near Israel’s border and otherwise make concessions as it is being openly humiliated. There is no way for Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah or other officials to spin the latest violence as a win to save face with supporters. This may not matter to Israel. Preceding the attack, Gallant had warned that a military solution, not negotiations, is what will lead to change along its borders.

The biggest risk is that this may lead to an all-out war. As I’ve argued before, such a war would be devastating to both Israel and Lebanon and might not fundamentally change the strategic equation despite the high cost it would impose. Hezbollah has a massive rocket and missile arsenal, and it could overwhelm Israel missile and air defenses and strike civilian and infrastructure targets throughout the country. Even if Hezbollah suffered considerable losses, the group has many supporters in Lebanon and, with Iranian help, could rebuild its forces and, a few years down the road, pose just as much of a threat to Israel.

War is not inevitable. Although Nasrallah described the attacks as a “declaration of war,” he also did not promise immediate retaliation and had words of caution as well as fiery rhetoric. So far, Hezbollah has tried to keep the war limited, but where Hezbollah’s true red line for war lies is unclear. The group may also try to respond with terrorism in Europe or another part of the world, as it has in the past, as a way of responding but not doing so with military strikes, where Israel has the upper hand.

In addition, there is the question of why Israel employed this impressive capability now. One can imagine triggering it just as Israeli tanks were rolling into Lebanon to fight Hezbollah, sowing chaos at a critical moment for the group. At times, a covert capability must be used or lost—there is always a risk of discovery—but by playing an ace today, Israel does not have it in its hand for the future.

For Israeli leaders, however, such concerns seem outweighed by the tactical benefits, and in any event many of the country’s pre-Oct. 7 approaches to security no longer apply. One of the biggest is its confidence in deterrence and limited war. Fearing a repeat of a surprise catastrophe on the order of Oct. 7, Israel is willing to risk greater conflict and even all-out war, believing that this may be better than living in constant fear of a surprise attack.

Most worrisome is the possibility that Israeli leaders are not thinking about the long term at all. Israel has a long tradition of short-term political thinking in its national security decision-making, and the constant pressure on Hezbollah may foster an escalatory spiral that Israelis may eventually regret.

Day after day, I stare at their beautiful faces, learn their names, and read about the Israeli soldiers who have fallen in battle. I try to imagine their lives in all the cities of the land, lives cut so short. I salute them. I weep for them, and will always remember them.

The fallen soldiers are mainly men–boys really–in their early twenties, although some are only 19. Thus far, over 500 Israeli soldiers have been killed in battle; 168 in Gaza since 10/7.

Demographically speaking, this is equivalent to approximately 18,444 fallen American soldiers.

In addition, three thousand members of the IDF have been wounded which is the equivalent, demographically, to 110,666 wounded American soldiers.

Although one does not hear about this very much, about 200,000 Israelis have been displaced, pulled back from both the north and the south. This is the demographic equivalent of more than seven–nearly eight–million displaced American civilians.

Imagine the cost of such relocation, imagine the trauma of such internal exile.

This is a nightmare, a horror, a continuation of the atrocities launched by Hamas against Israel on 10/7.

You would not know any of this if all you read was the Western media. With some honorable exceptions, your attention would be primarily focused on the number of Gazans dead–statistics which routinely combine Hamas’s soldiers with pro-Hamas Gazan civilians. Even so, one can never trust the totally untrustworthy statistics issued by Hamas.

Where is the media and activist outcry about the Red Cross’s craven refusal to visit the Israeli hostages and to deliver medicine to the sick and dying? Where is the world’s righteous indignation about the Arab Muslim world’s refusal to allow Gazan civilians even temporary asylum?

Jews have watered our ancient homeland with their blood. Arabs have always, always attacked Jews, whether they lived in Iraq or Syria, in Morocco or Iran, or in the Holy Land. Jihad against the infidel always meant “Kill the Jews first.”

In the 1948 war of Independence, 4000 Israeli soldiers and 2000 Israeli civilians were murdered.

I’ve been told that during the Six Day War of self-defense in 1967, more than 700 soldiers fell in six days but no one knew this, (there were no cellphones), and so “it did not affect morale.”

According to Ambassador Michael Oren, 2,656 Israeli soldiers were killed in the 1973 Yom Kippur war. 

So many wars of self-defense, so many false accusations that Israel launched only unjust wars of aggression.

Nine or more wars later–here we are again.

One Israeli told me that his young soldier son has just lost thirteen friends, “real friends,” who have fallen in battle, and “how each funeral is devastating.” But he adds: “When you see the amazing kids this country has raised, you feel even more how lucky they were to grow up in this country and that this truly is a special place worth defending.”

Another Israeli described the unending shiva calls and how “the burial grounds are a place of honor, love, solace, and community. When one visits the homes of the bereaved, the mourners are surrounded by supporters from their towns and loved ones.”

The spirit of the people is amazing. I received a Newsletter about how a platoon of army reservists on their way to Gaza were treated at the Jerusalem market. The entire line of shoppers insisted on paying for their food and would not take “No” for an answer.

A third Israeli broke my heart with her eloquence. She wrote: “These dutiful Israeli soldiers will not grow old. Nor hug their parents again, nor meet someone they will love, nor parent, nor stroll in a Nature preserve in their beautiful land….ever again.”

Finally, the most humbling email I’ve received to date, was from an Israeli mother whose sons were in combat. She said that my words sustained her and functioned as a light in the darkness.

Oh, but they will all be enshrined in both history and memory. However, they were so young! I am about sixty years older than many of them and thousands of miles away. How many universes have been lost? How many future children and grandchildren will never be born?

When will the American government finally understand that Islamist Jihad is a religious war against infidels, (Jews, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Baha’i), a war launched by Islamist barbarians? What will it take for Western journalists and academics to understand that the Jihadists are coming for the Sunday people next; that Iran has Europe and America in its gunsights?

Most important, when will our government decide to respond to Iran’s attacks on America?

My mom has been battling stage 3 pancreatic cancer and 2 days ago, she completed her 4th chemotherapy session. She has 2 more to go before they assess it to remove the tumor.

She was diagnosed on November 28, 2023. She began chemotherapy December 26, 2023 and was admitted to the emergency room later that day from complications. She was discharged December 29, 2023 and my family came down to Florida on December 30, 2023.

On her birthday, January 2, 2024, after her follow-up meeting with her oncologist. She was feeling defeated about how things had been happening since her diagnosis. She vocalized no desire to live in front of us (including my 12 year old daughter (her only grandchild)).

My family (my spouse, daughter & myself), at the suggestion of my spouse made the commitment to be her ongoing support system. This is so she could make whatever decision she wanted regarding how she chooses to proceed with her diagnosis.

I personally committed to split time between our 2 bedroom home in Durham, North Carolina & her 1 bedroom apartment in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to make sure we could commit to her health treatment planned as it began taking effect on December 26, 2023.

We did not request anything from anybody and agreed to take on the additional financial burdens it would place on us to fulfill this commitment, (despite knowing we weren't in the financial situation to do so).

We arranged things so my spouse and daughter could return to school in NC on January 8th. I stayed back with my mom for that chemo week. Since I'm a business owner with time flexibility, I would make the trips and stay with my mom throughout the treatment windows in Florida.

This agreement means renting a car for an one-way trip to North Carolina or Florida weekly (a $200-275 expense & 11-14 hours of travel time per trip). The first time we brought her up to NC ever, my spouse drove our car down to get us and then shared in the responsibility of driving back to NC. It cost us $250 in fuel and food for the trip. We realized it gave my mom & I more flexibility in travel days, saved on time spent on the road, and cost the same to just rent a car (Chevrolet Malibu) for each trip.

This agreement meant now sourcing food with all my mom's health dietary restrictions (from having a gastric sleeve) & her diagnosis dietary restrictions for 2 households. As well as me preparing most meals for both homes while I'm in and away from NC. In addition, replacing gluten with gluten-free alternatives in the diet. (A lot more coconut and almond based supplies). Cooking meals for a family of four that works and can be considered Keto-friendly and cancer friendly and while trying to stay under a budget of $300-$350 monthly.

Since we've implemented this plan to be her support system, all hell has broken loose in our lives. (My mom calls it just life lifing though).

On Martin Luther King weekend, began a school district wide issue in my Daughter's school system. Different staff began protesting and calling out of work (which we personally support their stances) due to significant pay discrepancies being communicated.

This immediately meant unreliable transportation for my daughter getting to & from school 25+ minutes away. My spouse teaches in a different school system 20 minutes in the opposite direction of my daughter's school, and we only have one car. Since she started middle school this year, their school school arrival times are the same. But her bus pick-up time solved the problem there. So there is now an ongoing possibility of him being late to work at his school daily.

On our first trip back down for treatment, it went perfect with the rental, until I realized after returning the rental car that I had lost my business cellphone inside of the rental car. (It hasn't been found by Budget's staff during cleaning and the car had already been rented out again less than 2 hours after being dropped off.) So I still have to pay to get that phone replaced.

This is compiled on top of this being my businesses' slow season and having no reserves to catch the $950 overhead in monthly expenses that comes from inventory space, business insurance, & hosting email domains, office assistant services & website. We only one future booking on the calendar and it's for a new build. January there was only $900 made. $300 had to go towards having to subrent out the job because it over lapped with chemo treatment and would cost twice as much to keep in-house with temp staff. $150 went towards repaying our transaction based capital funding loan from Shopify. $120 went towards getting 2 items of inventory for the second booking.

So I borrowed funds from something I couldn't afford to take from just to keep all of our inventory spaces secured.

My Chase credit card is over the limit by $140 and a payment is due today. My secure loan payment with Navy Federal is also due today and I don't have any of it. My business insurance payment of $200 is due tomorrow, and I don't have that either.

And the difference in the cost for our last car rental to come down for chemo week is still due back to the card I used for it. And I have to pay 200 for the car rental to go back up to NC Monday.

Then back in NC, this week on Tuesday, our only car's engine light came on. It was taken into our dealership on Wednesday morning to find out why. That diagnostic end up costing $250. We finally got answers Friday afternoon. Our car has 139k miles on it, and we're being told the engine needs to be replaced. It has been quoted $8k to have a used engine put into it or over $12k to have a new engine with a lifetime warranty put into our 2016 Chevrolet Cruze premier.

This car gets everyone to school and has been how my spouse has been supplementing his income working for the school system and parks & rec by doing Shipt. So now income has been reduced even more and expenses have drastically increased more.

MY business first official rental booking for this year took place yesterday, and that was supposed to be able to be delivered using our car. Since it's still in the shop, we had to book a last-minute $200 car rental for my spouse and daughter to fulfill the booking delivery yesterday and to be able to go back to do the rental booking pick-up today.

Emergency fund is pretty much exhausted after this week and the savings, too. Then today, with a little downtime, I learn that all my email payments were due on MLK weekend. This resulted in 5 email domains (3 important ones needed for tax filings) to be canceled by godaddy after 2 weeks of missing the payment notifications. I've had the email plan for almost 10 years, and it initially only cost me $14/month for all 5 emails. But because it was canceled and the package no longer exists, it cost me $29/month to have them reactivate and restore the 3 important emails or over $70/month to get them all reactivated. I only activated the 3 and paid it up until April for $59, so I don't miss its before filing taxes.

This week in Florida, my mom's cancer treatment visits started charging her a copay. Due to an error that recently took place on the backend by her health insurance. It's taking longer to resolve it with then despite them already seeing that it'san error in their coordination of benefits process. This week alone, we had to pay $325 in co-pays just to avoid the chemotherapy and white blood cell visits at the oncologist from being canceled by their office. The error is still causing a previous $200 outstanding balance to reflect on her account.

TODAY, it all became too much to hold in any longer. I have never had to face this many trials all at once while still having ongoing ones coming my way. My heart, mind & spirit is heavy right now. I need GOD to do something supernatural for my family in this season. In a way, only God can show up. I'm not broken. My faith isn't shaken. We're not going back on our commitment. Cancer won't defeat my family! We're breaking so many generational cycles right now. Cancer was just the catalyst to expedite the process.

Apollo bought the Ottumwa facility in 2015 from Warburg Pincus, and it became part of RegionalCare Hospital Partners. A flurry of transactions followed: The next year, Apollo merged RegionalCare with Capella, another health care company, and in 2018 Apollo merged those operations with Lifepoint Health. 

Then, in 2019, Medical Properties Trust bought the real estate under 10 Lifepoint hospitals, including Ottumwa Regional, leasing them back to the facilities. Private-equity firms often conduct such transactions, generating cash for themselves and their partners from the sale of real estate underlying the facilities, but often saddling the hospitals with increased costs in rents. 

The sale and leaseback of the real estate in Ottumwa does not appear to have added to the facility’s rental costs, according to a person briefed on the transaction.
