A life where she would never know if she had actually worked for, had actually earned, anything that she had. She lost contact with her siblings. She lost her family. She lost herself. And then her luck finally worked out well: Reginald Hargreeves was dead, and her long lost brother was finally home.

And the apocalypse was only days away. Go figure.

Originally number Seven, Andromeda’s ability to copy anyone else’s powers should have made her number one, but she struggled to control it. While theoretically she should have been able to mimic any power so long as she’d seen it used before, and to use multiple powers at once, Andromeda struggled to copy anything unless she could see the person whose power it was, and could barely handle one let alone multiple.

She’d long since stopped hoping to improve her rank when suddenly Ben dies, and Andromeda finds herself reappointed as Number Six, and the only power she doesn’t seem to struggle to use? Klaus’ ability to see their dead brother. Unable to cope with it, Andromeda travels halfway across the world, and the further she gets from Klaus, the weaker her mimic gets. Finally separated from her family, and the ghosts of her past, Andromeda is ready for her fresh start. For over a decade she lives like she’s normal; no superheroes, no mimics, and no ghosts, but her father’s funeral forces her to return to all three - and now with the added bonus of the apocalypse.

Only, the next event rolled around and Diego was back. And then again, and again, and again. For five years, Diego served as Arya’s bodyguard, best friend, part-time roommate, and occasional fake boyfriend. The two went everywhere together, told each other things they’d never told anyone else, became two halves of a whole. And then Reginald Hargreeves died, and Diego asked Arya to be his date to the funeral.

Going to unpleasant events as Diego’s date was hardly new to her, and saying no would never have crossed her mind, but usually he was the one responsible for protecting her, not the other way around. Still, even if he hadn’t wanted her support, Arya would die before she would let her best friend face that particular nightmare alone.

She used to roll her eyes when her father told her that she shouldn’t — couldn’t — trust anyone but her newest bodyguard turned other half, but as the apocalypse nears and some woman who calls herself The Handler takes a terrifying interest in Arya, she starts to think that maybe he had been onto something all along.

Born barely two months after her half sister Eudora, Athena had always known that she was different but, no matter how much money he offered, her parents refused to give her to Reginald, and Athena never met the Umbrella Academy.

Until she was 21, a skilled technopath and recent orphan, in the same Police Academy class as her sister and a boy who could have been her brother, and Athena found herself a new family with the two of them.

And then Diego dropped out and became a vigilante, Athena dropped out to become a hacker, and Eudora actually followed through and became a cop, but the three remained their own little family. And then Reginald Hargreeves dies, and Athena accompanies Diego to the funeral for the man who could have been her father, meets more people who could have been her siblings, and gets roped into stopping the apocalypse.

Audrey Hargreeves, The Charmer, was gifted with the power of hypnosis. So long as she focused, Audrey would use words or movement to put anyone under her spell. So, as an extra piece of her training, Reginald had her trained in several forms of dance, and Audrey fell in love. After years of abuse, she was unsurprised to find that her family was falling apart, and was one of the first to call it quits. Instead of staying in their personal hell-mansion, Audrey chose to pursue ballet and avoid using her powers as much as possible, and to never, ever look back. But then Reginald died, the surviving siblings reunited, Five showed up to warn them about the apocalypse, and Audrey realizes that the past can never stay in the past.

And then Reginald died, and the seventeen siblings reunited for the funeral. A lifetime of resentment, rivalries, and abandonment issues would be a lot for any family, let alone a family of superheroes whose long lost brother has just appeared for the first time in sixteen years. And that’s when Macey Arden, the thirteenth miracle, shows up.

When her siblings are thirteen, she is six; when they are eighteen, she is ten; when they are twenty nine, at the dawn of the apocalypse, she is fifteen. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the speed at which she ages, no consistency with which to plan. And Bailey, ever the youngest, can’t leave the mansion with her siblings. At least, not until Klaus, through means that she never wants to know, gets her registered as his own. And for twelve years, their system works. As far as anyone knows, Bailey is his daughter, dumped on his doorstep by a one night stand. It works; they’re as thick as thieves despite Bailey’s age and Klaus’ addiction, and everything is good. Until Reginald dies. Bailey was prepared for the fighting, she had accepted the bad blood, she was unfazed by the news of the apocalypse, but she never expected to no longer be the youngest of the Hargreeves siblings.

Summary: On October 1st, 1989, Beatrice Lovecraft-Hargreeves is one of 43 miracle children, born to women who had not been pregnant when the day began. On October 31st, 1989, Shailene and Rupert Lovecraft refused to give their daughter to billionaire Reginald Hargreeves.

But growing up just down the street from the Academy, Reginald never took his sight off of her, waiting for the opportune moment to add her to his collection. That moment comes on December 31st, 1999, when tentacles emerge from Beatrice’s hands and slaughter her parents. The billionaire is quick to step in and claim the girl, stealing her out from CPS and naming her 6.5, The Abomination, The Horror’s other half. Only, he didn’t anticipate just how close the two would become; didn’t anticipate that the two so called monsters would fall in love. Didn’t anticipate Beatrice dying when she was fourteen.

And then, three years later, Ben dies. Klaus attempts to bring his brother, his best friend, back, but instead he brings back Beatrice. And aside from now being a few years younger than the other Hargreeves’, she seems unchanged. Except that now she and Klaus are bonded, now someone else can see his ghosts. And just as they start to get used to it, Reginald Hargreeves dies and they have to return for the funeral. They have to face the rest of the academy, who still think Beatrice is dead; who still don’t believe that Klaus can talk to Ben; who still all blame themselves — and each other — for the two tragedies. And if that weren’t complicated enough, another presumed dead Hargreeves shows up with warnings of an impending apocalypse.

Summary: On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. Yes, we know that. Braeden Hargreeves, The Brain, was one of them. Gifted with super intelligence, with the ability to know all of the information of any book or person that she touched, Reginald made it very clear that Braeden was not allowed to touch anyone at the Academy, ever. Isolated and touch starved, Braeden found a coping mechanism in playing other people, which soon grew into a passion for acting.

At the age of eighteen, both she and her rival - sorry, sister - left home with the intention of pursuing theatre. While Allison went straight to Hollywood, using her powers to advance her career, Braeden went to Broadway and slowly but surely worked her way up until she was asked to play one of the two leads in a new TV show, a role which brought her face to face with her estranged sister.

As is often the case with siblings, their reunion brings back eighteen years of resentment and rivalries, and just as soon as they start to put the past behind them, their third sister publishes a tell all novel about their lives and everything falls apart again.

While Cam moved on, learning to survive on her own while watching her siblings on the news, the remaining seven Hargreeves never could. Diego and Luther, blaming each other for the loss of their third musketeer, went from the best of friends to bitter rivals. Reeling from the loss of their sister, Allison and Vanya shut everyone out — save for Luther and Five respectively. Ben grew quieter and Five grew more restless and Klaus turned to drugs in the hopes of never having to see his sister’s ghost.

But there was no ghost for him to see, because Cam wasn’t dead. For six years, Cam struggled, but survived. She watched on the news when Five suddenly stopped showing up; trying to find him by herself, but to no avail. Until one day, shortly after her fifteenth birthday, a woman approached her. She called herself the Commissioner, and invited Cam to join the Temps Commission and help save the world. And, with nothing else going for her, Cam said yes, and was introduced to her partner; and old man who’d survived the apocalypse alone, who also happened to be her long lost brother.

And then Cam learned the truth. The Commission’s goal was to make sure that the apocalypse happened. And Five’s goal was to stop the apocalypse and save their family. Well, at least Cam had no doubt about which side she was on.

He told her siblings that she had died, selling her to a “boarding school” in England, owned by an acquaintance of his. Almost twenty three years later, Reginald Hargreeves died, as Cassie knew he would. The surviving five Hargreeves children gather for the funeral and find themselves face to face with not one but two of their supposedly dead siblings, both of whom bring warnings of the impending apocalypse.

But then Reginald Hargreeves dies, and as much as she doesn’t want to go back to the mansion, Gemma knows that she can’t give up on the one chance she has to see her siblings again.

With help from Diego, she got her life together, got a job, and started her life over without Klaus or her siblings. And she was fine, she was good, until Diego showed up one night, begging her to go home with him for their father’s funeral.

On April 1st, 2019, two thirteen year olds witness the end of the world. Forty years later, on March 24th, 2019, they get the chance to stop it.

But after witnessing her parents die in a mall shooting, the then twenty one year old finds herself feeling completely lost and disconnected, and soon finds her way to the party scene, spiraling further and further downwards, losing more and more time, until one day she meets an equally messed up boy with tattoos on each of his hands and the exact same birth minute as hers.

Her birth was expected. What wasn’t expected was that for some reason — her alien biology, Reginald’s experiments, or maybe just fate — her birth would trigger the birth of 43 miracle children. Instead of getting one child that day, Reginald Hargreeves got eight.

Being number Zero was supposed to be an honour. She was supposed to be the best of the best, but Kamaria knew better — Reginald didn’t see her as a person. And if she’d ever doubted it, he would have confirmed it when he faked her death and locked her away in a separate wing of the mansion, keeping her isolated from everyone but he and Pogo. For years, Kamaria trained in isolation, mastering her powers and growing in resentment, until finally she managed to break out of the mansion. She started a new life as a professional dancer, and left the past in the past. And then Luther showed up at one of her performances with no recollection of her existence. And then Luther went to the moon the next morning. And then Reginald Hargreeves died.

And, eleven years after finally escaping, Kamaria Hargreeves went home, only to find out that her former classmates — siblings? — and even her own mother didn’t remember that she’d ever existed.

Gifted with the ability to manipulate energy, Ky was given the highest honour; number Zero, the Bomb. While she was treated better than her siblings, she saw the suffering they endured, and did her best to defend them, but after Number Five disappeared, nothing was the same.

She tried to hold her family together, but in the end they still fell apart, and she never thought that she would see them again. But then their father dies, and the siblings are forced to reunite. But they aren’t the same as Ky remembers them, and frankly, neither is she. She can handle temperamental siblings and a lifetime of resentments, but can she get them to cooperate long enough to stop the apocalypse?

Summary: Larissa Hargreeves had been the golden girl, once. The perfect daughter who could speak anything into reality as long as she believed enough. She had been the original Number One, until her fall from grace. The first time she ever failed to speak something into existence, the first time she hadn’t been able to believe hard enough, she was unceremoniously demoted to Number Eight, where she spent the rest of her miserable years at the Hargreeves Mansion before finally breaking out.

That was supposed to be the end of it; she was never supposed to have to go back to the source of her trauma. But apparently she hadn’t believed that enough either, because a few months before her thirtieth birthday, Reginald Hargreeves dies and Larissa has to go back home for the funeral turned family reunion. She was supposed to go to appease Pogo and then leave again, and this time she would be free from the house of horrors for the rest of her life.

But even Larissa couldn’t just speak the apocalypse out of existence; that would be almost as impossible as speaking her siblings into cooperating.

She left her number with her siblings, packed up, and moved halfway across the country, and never heard from them again. Until Ben died. Until Ben died, and Willa knew, she just knew, that she could have prevented it if she hadn’t left — and, just a few years later, Vanya would tell the entire world the same thing when she published her book.

Which is why, when she hears about Luther’s accident only a few years later, she knows she has to go back to the house of her nightmares. She can’t let another one of her siblings die, not when she could have saved him. But when she returns to find out that she’s now Number 6, and that Luther is being sent to the moon, she realizes that Reginald had it all planned out — and she just gave him exactly what he wanted.

For four years, Willa found herself trapped in the mansion; unwilling to leave in case something happened to Luther, and unable to escape from Reginald’s constant scrutiny. Until finally, four years later, Luther is coming home, Reginald is dead, and Willa is free — and the main suspect in Reginald’s death, with the apocalypse only days away. So, maybe not so free.

pfffff okay to try and keep this at least marginally reasonable I’m going to limit descriptions to one/two lines

Crown of Shadows/Shrouded Throne: A split-path narrative where, to stop the civil war raging in Plegia, Robin comes to Ylisse to beg aid from Exalt Emmeryn. After getting drafted by accident into the Shepherds, the Plegian and the Ylissean prince become fast friends – and very soon, something more.

Cursed Fate: Following Robin’s death, Chrom takes his body back to Plegia for burial; when a disembodied whisper confirms that there may be a chance to restore Robin’s life, Chrom goes on a quest through the Grimleal nation to bring together Grima’s remains.

Affectionately Yours: Accepting Plegia’s invitation to visit in his sister’s stead, Chrom rapidly comes to realize that everything he thought he knew about the halidom’s neighbor is at best a wild exaggeration thanks to the guidance of Plegia’s sovereign, Robin.

Pride and Joy: Raised in Plegia under Mustafa’s care, Robin is drafted into Validar’s assassination attempt on Emmeryn – but decides that the orders should not be fulfilled and defects, saving the Exalt’s life. Twist of Fate: A role reversal AU where Chrom awakens in Plegia with no memory and Robin finds him. With the Exalt mounting a new push in his crusade, Chrom struggles with the questions about who he might have been before – and with his growing feelings for the Plegian who took him in.

Manwearer: After becoming separated from his mother, Robin is raised by the taguel of Panne’s warren. On hearing about a threat to the Exalt’s life, the warren mobilizes to her aid, and Robin and Panne ally with the Shepherds to uncover the deeper mystery behind the attack.

As You Are: Robin comes to Ylisse on a diplomatic mission, hoping to warn the Exalt of a potential threat. When an attack leaves the Plegian blind, Chrom confesses his feelings – only to be rebuffed as Robin believes that the feelings are born of guilt, leaving Chrom to grapple with what he fears are unrequited feelings.

Hard Reset: A bad-end Heroes AU where Muspell invades Askr and wipes out the Order of Heroes – but before Surtr can kill Kiran, they fire Breidablik, which somehow transports them to another Zenith. Taken in by the Emblians, Kiran sets about trying to prevent the ruin that befell the world they were first summoned to.

Kintsugi: A Golden Deer-based Three Houses fix-it AU, where Claude decides from the outset of his reunion with Byleth they’re going to save as many lives as possible.

BONUS

Smoke and Mirrors: Pokemon AU where Robin and her Zoroark Reflet (who prefers a human guise that passes for her brother) join with Chrom, a Pokemon Ranger branching out into competitive training; and his sister Lissa, an aspiring pokemon medic. This brings them into conflict with the Grimleal who are hunting for the Legendary Pokemon Giratina – a pokemon that Robin and Reflet have a very curious connection to.

Design Defect: A modern AU where Robin is the son of the head of the Grimleal mafia who enters Ylisstol University and meets Chrom, son of Exalt Corp’s CEO and the heir to the family company. While Robin might have some ulterior motives for getting close to Chrom at first, he quickly gets in over his head.

Second Chances: After Chrom is summoned to Askr and finds the tactician he lost in the conflict with Grima, the two are finally free to have the relationship they were so long denied during their life in Ylisse.

A House Divided: A speculative AU exploring what might have been had Alm and Celica not attacked Grima in the Thabes Labyrinth and instead took the dragon in. He eventually befriends Tiki, and the two eventually come into conflict with Naga, who wants to destroy the abomination she fears is corrupting her daughter (and in so doing destroys her relationship with Tiki).

Heroes Canon: The constantly evolving situation in Zenith, which includes the dragon creche and the curious cases of villains truly going Hero.

Pre-Timeskip Fix-It: A Black Eagles-based Three Houses fix-it AU where Byleth gets to shut down Edelgard’s alarming rhetoric every time she opens her mouth, and the Imperial princess stumbles her way through the process of becoming a better person.

Spire Project: A Three Houses canon-divergent AU where the question of “what would have happened if Edelgard had hired Miklan to kill Claude and Dimitri at the start of the year?” snowballs into madness (when the summary is 17.5k words and 30 pages long, you know it’s gonna be a monster).

Daycare AU (collab with AcquaSole): When single father Chrom switches his young daughter into Robin’s daycare center, he quickly finds himself getting close to the soft-spoken Plegian that Lucina has gotten so attached to.

Feles Regem Aspeciat (collab with citadelity): Naga has possessed Chrom and taken over rule in the halidom. Robin volunteers to become the inside man for the resistance in the hopes of finding a means to free Chrom from the divine’s control.

War Crimes (collab with anankos): The Exalt of Ylisse becomes willing host to Naga’s power in a bid to wipe Plegia off the map, but the Fell Dragon’s return puts the war in a deadlock. Chrom is kidnapped and brought to Plegia in a desperate bid to open diplomatic channels, but when that fails he ends up as as a guest and becomes unlikely friends with Robin, the son of a Plegian tactician (who has more than a few secrets).

Assassin’s Creed: Awakening: The result of me playing too much Assassin’s Creed. When Emmeryn is kidnapped and slated to become a Grimleal sacrifice, Chrom and the Shepherds rush to save her – only her rescue comes at Plegian hands, instead. Defying his crusading father, Chrom chooses to stand by Robin and ends up embroiled in a millennia-old conflict between secret forces.

Sibling AU: Grima as Robin’s protective older sibling. When Emmeryn invites the recently-crowned king of Plegia to Ylisse for diplomatic discussions, Grima sneaks his younger brother along to show him the world he’s been missing, and both unexpectedly find new friends in what they long believed were enemy lands. (Also woe betide poor Chrom when it comes to dating.)

Promare AU: I saw Promare. It was great! So much so that my brain folded Awakening’s setting and characters up all nice and neat and shoved them into Promare’s narrative arc. And also it’s Chrobin because that’s who I am as a person.

Cardcaptor Lissa: Rewatching Cardcaptor Sakura blindsided me with the realization that Lissa would make a perfect Cardcaptor and things spiraled from there.

Vampire AU: Robin is a charming young man hired on to be Chrom’s manservant and bodyguard; unbeknownst to anyone, he hides a secret (vampiric) affliction.

Mermaid AU: Everyone’s mermaids what else do you want from me

Life Goes On: My friend wrote a thing and it made me want to write things for the thing it’s all anankos’ fault i’m writing promare stuff now

After I answered a question yesterday about the possibility of Medic (or any other TF2 character) being a psychopath, I got to thinking about what might actually be the deal with these guys. Obviously, they’re abnormal, but I don’t like writing off weird characters as just being crazy and/or stupid.

I dug into what I understand about the characters—the core mercs as well as the Administrator and Miss Pauling—and came up with this run-down of how I think they might be diagnosed if evaluated by a modern psychiatrist.

A disclaimer! First off, please take all my conjecture with a big ol’ grain of salt. I’m not claiming to be an authority on either psychiatry or neurology, and this is just my personal interpretation of the characters. It’s fine if you don’t agree! Also, I want to be clear that I mean no disrespect to anyone who might have any of the conditions I mention. I hope my tone comes off as respectful and not exploitative.

One last thing. I feel like this should go without saying, but just in case: DON’T USE THIS LIST AS A WAY TO DIAGNOSE YOURSELF. If I mention something that strikes a chord with you, by all means research it, but talk to a professional if you seriously suspect you might have a mental issue. I am NOT a professional!

Now that all that hemming and hawing is out of the way...

Scout

Not to rely on stereotypes, but I think ADHD is likely. His impulsivity, hyperactivity, and need for stimulation are strong indicators. He also has a tendency to self-medicate with massive amounts of caffeine and sugar from all the soda he drinks. Oh, and it’s been pretty heavily suggested that Scout is dyslexic, which I believe to be the case.

Soldier

It’s pretty much directly stated in the comics that he has brain damage, resulting in delusions and cognitive impairment that border on dementia. (Think Gary Busey post-motorcycle accident.) The comics suggest he was brain damaged by lead poisoning in the water, but I’m certain he had preexisting problems from old head trauma. That helmet has an important function!

On top of that, I think Soldier’s a good candidate for Tourette Syndrome, but I don’t mean the coprolalia version you see in TV and movies, where someone involuntarily shouts obscenities. He commonly has sudden verbal outbursts (”MAGGOTS!”) and physical tics (saluting, marching, etc.) that manifest in his drill sergeant persona.

Pyro

Oh, boy. Okay. Pyro is a hell of a puzzle, and I could go on for pages, but I’ll boil it down to what I think is most likely. Of course, they exhibit pyromania, but possibly also synesthesia?

One possibility is an “eccentric” mood disorder that manifests as a loss of contact with reality, among other symptoms. That would be either Schizotypal Personality Disorder or full-blown Schizophrenia. The distorted Pyroland version of the world fits this really well, and it’s possible that it might be a chronic thing, with Pyro constantly filtering the world through their delusions.

The other likely possibility is some sort of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, where seizures in a focal part of the brain yank Pyro out of reality without sending them into the physical convulsions you associate with general epilepsy. This would suggest that Pyro does touch base with reality but gets “transported to Pyroland,” instead of living there all the time.

Demoman

This one is easy. Demo’s a severe alcoholic, to the degree that stopping drinking cold turkey would probably kill him. In the comics, his body even rejects normal food and drink because it’s learned to get energy just from booze, and his body, in times of withdrawal, can make its own alcohol supply, which an actual real thing. It’s called Auto-Brewery Syndrome, where microbes in the gut can convert carbs into ethanol. Demo must just have the most advanced case of it in human history!

Heavy

He seems completely neurotypical to me, aside from the hints of both psychopathy and PTSD that come with being a mercenary. I do think he used to have problems from sleep apnea, but some surgery cleared that up. Now he just snores like a chainsaw. (Yes, I know sleep apnea isn’t a mental condition.)

Engineer

I suspect, but I’m not certain, that he may be in the very high-functioning part of the Autism Spectrum, with savant-like qualities. Maybe he got his 11 PhDs and abilities as a human calculator just from being driven and extremely intelligent, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he were wired differently. If it is the case, he’s learned to compensate incredibly well in his interpersonal behavior. That Texan charm is a pretty effective tool for putting people at ease, I bet.

Medic

Like I said before, I don’t like simply labeling characters as “crazy.” Yeah, he’s got the mad scientist thing going on, but I think that stems from Bipolar Disorder. Specifically, I believe Medic has type I, which is what people usually think of when they imagine bipolar behavior: extended periods of elevated mood (or hypomania) punctuated with full manic episodes, which can take on psychotic features. There may or may not be periods of depression. He doesn’t seem to swing that way, but it’s possible.

He’s DEFINITELY a self-medicator. I mean, duh. Huffing Medi-Gun fumes and a bit of drinking probably help to calm him down when he gets too high-strung. I doubt he takes pills for it, e.g. lithium or anti-convulsants, because of the high likelihood of side-effects. I could see him doing some DIY ECT, though. Getting too unstable? A few brain zaps, and he’s right as rain!

Bonus fact! Did you know that a German term to call someone insane is to say that they “have a bird”? It might come from folklore about insane people literally having bird familiars living in their heads, or it might be something like calling someone a “crazy cat lady,” where people who keep birds will talk to them too much and seem a bit off. Just thought that was interesting!

Sniper

I personally believe he probably has some Agoraphobia. Not to a debilitating degree, but he hates being stuck in what feel like insecure places. It’s actually a symptom of Avoidant Personality Disorder, which I think is pretty likely for him. It’s thought to result from feeling abandoned and alienated by other people at a young age. (*cough*orphanedbybirthparentsandraisedinAustralia*cough*) In addition to agoraphobia, signs include self-imposed social isolation, emotional distance, mistrust, and an inferiority complex. If he does have APD, he’s integrated it neatly into his occupation, where distance is a good thing.

Spy

Similar to Heavy, he seems pretty neurotypical to me. It’s possible that he had some similar issues to Scout when he was younger, but if so, he’s learned to compensate. He does exhibit the most psychopathic traits of all the mercs, but like I said before, I don’t believe any of them are actually true psychopaths.

Administrator

Classic megalomaniac! She’s got textbook Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Everything about the way she presents herself screams narcissism: grandiosity, a thirst for power, arrogance, a sense of entitlement, lack of empathy, and extremely manipulative behavior. Maybe she has good reasons for her narcissism, like being an 150-year-old supervillain, but I digress.

Miss Pauling

Poor thing. I’ve mentioned it before, but my pet theory is that the Administrator broke down her original personality and built it back up to make her a useful pawn, capable of appearing very unassuming and responsible while performing cold-blooded acts of violence guilt-free. She’s a perfect tool, with limited freewill and no room in her mind for cognitive dissonance to slip in. To her, I imagine it feels like living with with Depersonalization Disorder, where either the world around her or her own actions take on an unreal quality as a way of shielding her mind from the nasty parts of her job, but on the outside, the effect is seamless.

The Name (Scene 1)

Even in a world where soulmates can choose to wear each others' names into the next life, religious bigots and extremists still present an obstacle. They maintain certain pairs are a test of faith, rather than ordained by their God.

Bren grew up in a foster family full of them, unaware he's been living a lie ever since they scarred out the real name on his chest. However, all of their hateful scheming cannot overcome his true romantic destiny. Warnings for: Abuse and religious homophobia (with a happy ending) Story behind the “keep reading” tag.

Bren kissed along his full name, etched into Cara’s skin just above her right breast and curling toward her shoulder in gold script. The mark of soul mates. He meant it less as an adoration of his own name and more in wonder of what it meant. An uncommon bond carried through several lifetimes.

Most couples elected for a fresh start, neither able to lie as they chose whether or not they wanted to meet again in their next life or start anew. Or so the legends said. Only a rare few remembered choosing and not everyone believed them.

Still, occasionally a baby was born with a name scrawled in the skin over their heart. The name of their soulmate with a level of love going back at least a lifetime, often many. Living proof of both reincarnation and soulmates. No matter what, they often found each other by happenstance, the exchanged names merely proof of what they felt when they looked at one another.

Bren loved the idea of it. Though some of the legends spoke of broken pairs. If one of them died before meeting in the next life, or they died at different times, one might choose to be born with their name while the other chose a clean slate. The promise of a soulmate kept him positive on his worst days. A sensitive child, he’d grown up bullied and often punished by his foster mother for not acting enough like a godly man.

Her favourite, Bren’s older foster brother, was often cruel and fond of making Bren’s full name, Bréanainn, sound more feminine, calling him a fag, sissy boy, and roughing him up. Pronounced brenning, Jack distorted it into bruh-neen and he only scoffed when Bren relied on the safety of his soulmate’s obviously feminine name. I am not, I’ll marry a girl named Cara! A sucker punch usually followed Jack’s scoff if Bren failed to climb up the tree in the backyard fast enough.

His foster mother was really little better and rarely said a bad word to Jack. In fact, she often claimed his tough, brotherly love was just the example Bren needed to grow into a proper man. Miserable, Bren ran away multiple times and always failed. The last time, he’d nearly succeeded.

It resulted in multiple sessions with a therapist and the kindly old children’s church director--the only person he particularly liked in his life at the time. The therapist sessions only made his life worse as a child. He became a sissy and a crazy. Still, even against Jack, Cara became more than a name once etched in his skin. She became a safe word.

Life only got easier once he escaped it in his mind, wondering how fantastic and beautiful Cara might be. Once Jack and mother Cochran saw. He would be man enough for her, they’d already chosen each other before and he would take them both far away from here.

Except here they were. She was fantastic, beautiful, with her perfect curves, sun-kissed skin, and long honey hair...but they still lived in Vicksburg, Mississippi, having announced their engagement last week. A pressured decision they’d based on his restlessness over the last few weeks. He still wanted away. Ireland made the top of his list, being from there originally (overcoming his accent had been hell as a kid), but having no memories of it. She promised an extended honeymoon there, and so they finally set a date and made their announcement.

His wayward thoughts of leaving often set him wondering if his childhood accident negatively affected his love for Cara. As if the burn scar over her name also marred his emotions. Before he even knew how to read, he’d crashed into an ironing board and fell on the hot iron. Bren couldn’t even remember the event, just the pain of healing and a sense of burning shame. He’d only been in Mother Cochran’s foster home a few days before it happened, actually.

I love her, he reminded himself firmly, repeated it in his head in litany. True enough, he did, at least he thought he did, but beyond that…. Well, he never could say he felt it with the same power legend gave such soulmates. In fact, he barely noticed her the first day she attended his church’s youth group.

However, he paid extra attention once she introduced herself. Cara McFadden. Cara. The one name with the power to make him a nervous wreck, if only because his foster mother told him what name he’d worn. Her name had been scarred out before he could even read.

All the same, she had been ecstatic and praising God the moment Bren introduced them. “You’re so lucky to have found God’s perfect match for you. Don’t let him get away now,” she’d said, wagging a finger at Cara. His life at the home only got easier as he began dating Cara with full approval of mother Cochran and Cara’s parents. It was as if their being together erased all the trauma and trouble of the past. He could even bet Jack had been jealous when he first spied Cara on Bren’s arm. Bonus, Cara’s parents loved him.

Despite strict home rules, they’d barely even gotten in trouble the first time they were caught making out. In fact, to his surprise, despite the words they spoke, he came away with the sense all of the adults were happy they’d begun getting physical. Relieved, even. But where his life had been miserable, Cara had enjoyed the life of a suburban princess. She confessed that the only time her parents had ever told her no was when she once asked for fencing lessons. Too violent. They talked her into violin instead, a skill she’d taught Bren in turn over the last few years.

He’d never really known or remembered happiness before her family moved to Vicksburg and began attending his foster family’s church. However, this made hardly the first time he wondered if her burned name had somehow affected their bond. It helped little that he’d lost most of his faith in God over years of misery while she went full in, attending every event, especially recently. In fact, their religious upbringing was the entire reason they were getting married now, before he had a proper job or even more than his own basic bachelor pad.

Her parents were gifting them a house, but it was more Cara’s guilt that they’d slept together outside of marriage. They were being pressured all around about it, but Cara generally agreed. Even though they were soulmates, and therefore married in other lives, they should get married in this one too. Not for the first time, Bren worried about marrying her as well. His was a fairly unique name, but not unheard of. What if they were the wrong Bréanainn and Cara? What if it wasn’t the scar at all that left him doubting, what if they were actually with the wrong person?

Cara stirred in her sleep. “Mmm...whatcha thinking about?” She mumbled with a small smile on her lips.

“How lucky I am,” Bren lied, trying not to let guilt show.

“No, you’re worrying about something.” She knew him well enough, at least.

I can’t tell her…. “I’m wondering if I deserve you at all.” True enough. After all, she’d shown nothing but warmth and commitment for each and every one of his unexpressed doubts. “Cara…” He loved her name, the sound of it. He felt safe with it on his lips.

She brushed her fingers over the burn scar that was her name, smile faltering. “I wonder the same sometimes...if I deserve you, I mean.”

The admission surprised him. “Why wouldn’t you deserve me?”

She shrugged and looked away. “I’m spoiled. I get everything I want and you say my name with so much...reverence. I just...I worry I’ll disappoint you. Sometimes I feel...incredibly selfish.” She shook her head and nibbled at her bottom lip until he kissed it.

“God’s will brought us together again, we should trust that.” Bren tried not to sound hollow when he spoke of God, but he felt perhaps Cara needed her own comfort phrase. She tended to smile any time she spoke it aloud.

Tears pooled in her eyes and she nodded mutely, then shook her head. “What if….” But she never finished, she only kissed his scar and cried until he calmed her down. Mixed in his assurances were words of self-blame and the silent tears he cried with her. If he’d not been so damned clumsy, this would have been perfect.

“We’ll see it through,” he soothed at her hair. “We’ll be okay.”

He struggled with believing his own words, but it only grew harder as the date of their wedding neared, especially after he began sleeping in their new house. Stifling reality filled every brick of their new home, concrete existence in every splinter. All of it built far too close--a permanent Vicksburg trap. He wanted free of this place. To go somewhere, anywhere he could get away from his foster family, stop attending church, separate the misery of his childhood from the happiness Cara promised.

Unfortunately, the idea of a permanent move put such fear in Cara’s eyes, claiming she couldn’t move so far from her family, needed this church and this town as much as she needed him. At the promise of a honeymoon in Ireland, he’d dropped it and never brought it up again.

Only a few days later Cara’s father had offered Bren a starting position in his company with a promise for growth. It paid well, and Bren found he had a knack for pleasing customers using the same sensitivity his foster mother often scolded him for. So of course their new house would be in town.

The closer their marriage date loomed, the more off every little detail felt. A series of wrong that only made both him and Cara more nervous. Months later, Ireland no longer seemed promising, or even desirable. Instead, it felt little more like the superglue applied to the trap door, personally applied.

Then something shifted. Bren couldn’t say what, just an elusive, nebulous feeling, something...right for a change, but just out of sight. At their rehearsal dinner only a few days before the wedding, it settled in with a hum.

Bren found himself staring at a familiar face across the fancy restaurant. One he couldn’t quite place. This man’s return stare and mischievous smile held him frozen in a heart-stopping way he’d never experienced before. Until the loud squawk of his foster mother’s voice cut straight through the spell.

“Oh! What a lovely wedding gift!” She jostled his elbow with both hands.

“Hm…?” He looked away and at her seated on his left, Cara on his right.

She scowled at him. “Do pay attention, boy, Brother McFadden here was just saying he bought you and Cara one of those scenic Alaskan cruises for your honeymoon.” Her voice took on a scolding quality. “Man’s already gotten the two of you your first home, you’d think you’d be more grateful.” She grumped and pursed her lips as though someone had shoved a lemon in her mouth.

So much for Ireland.

Inexplicably, Bren glanced back at the stranger with his short and artfully tousled, warm brown waves of hair, rather than at Cara. Only when the man frowned down at his dinner rather than watch in return did Bren glance at the correct person with a sheepish smile and a faint blush. He chalked the experience down to nerves, though attempted recognition still played at the edge of his mind.

“Sorry, sir,” he said, apologizing to Cara’s dad before he kissed her on the cheek. “That’ll be lovely, won’t it Cara?”

“Thank you, Daddy! It sounds beautiful, I can’t wait.”

The rest of dinner crawled by, Bren finding the crowds increasingly pressing and noisy as he soaked up every nearby emotion from irritation to outright joy, even a little fear. All part of being too sensitive, noticing little things most people missed, soaking up errant emotions like a sponge.

Overwrought and feeling a touch nauseated, Bren excused himself for the bathroom, if only for the quiet it promised. He snuck a little time for some fresh air afterward, stepping just outside the doors and leaning against the building in his fancy blue suit with his eyes closed.

“You smoke?” A vaguely familiar, male voice asked, his tone sounded off for the casual question, but it stopped Bren’s heart a beat all the same. He looked over and saw the man from earlier.

Bren shook his head. “Just...needed some air.” He swallowed hard and looked away, determined to avoid staring at all costs. He wondered if his nervous state showed in the smile he forced on his face. “Do you?” The other man held his coat, keys in hand as though he’d stopped in the process of leaving, not merely coming outside for a smoke.

“I know the value of fresh air,” he said and leaned against the wall nearby. "Doesn't work much on cold feet, or so I hear."

When Bren snuck a look, he found this intriguing man openly watching him with a pensive expression. Almost a head shorter, he nonetheless stood with all the confidence Bren lacked. The small black gauge piercing in one ear and barbel rods through the upper shell caught Bren's eye next. Then his words struck him. “Cold feet? No...I just--I don’t do well in crowds for too long. Too much...noise.”

Silence passed between them for several moments before the other man filled it, holding out his hand for a polite shake. “Caleb Teeks.”

Bren looked up and hurt at the sight of the other man’s tight smile. He thought he detected disappointment as well. Caleb had expected something. Perhaps he expected me to at least recognize his name? Bren’s brow furrowed as he accepted Caleb’s hand. “Bren.”

“That...short for something?” A tight quality strained Caleb’s voice.

Only then Bren realized they still held hands, a natural thing he hadn’t even thought about. He let go now and hated the frown on Caleb’s face as a result. “Yeah...I’m sorry, do I know you? I mean before tonight? I feel like I recognize you but I can’t say from where...Sorry.”

“There you are, Lord, give me patience,” Mother Cochran grumped after she flung open the door. Her eyes narrowed on Caleb. “Who are you?”

“Caleb Teeks, ma’am.” He introduced himself again and balked at the hateful scowl his name received.

Her expression only confused Bren further. In turn, he gave Caleb a more thorough look. Should I recognize him based on her obvious dislike? A stranger she argued with perhaps? Nothing fit.

“Well, I’m not particularly fond of my given name either, but what’s your problem with it?” Both Caleb’s expression and voice turned cold.

Mother Cochran sniffed. “Your kind is not wanted here.” She kept an accusing look on Caleb until after the last word, where she glared at Bren and motioned him at the door. “And you have a beautiful, God-given bride waiting on you with your name etched over her heart.” She threw a final glare at Caleb, who frowned further.

“My kind?” He laughed without any humor in it. “Which part of me isn’t welcome?” He turned his look of disbelief on Bren and got a wincing avoidance in response.

“Come on, Mother--” Bren tugged her by the arm and toward the door, away from Caleb, but she yanked her elbow away and sized the poor man up with a stubborn and open glare.

“You know very well which part. I saw you watching throughout our dinner, I’m not blind, waiting to attack when he’s out here alone. Godless, perverted--Well, you’ll not have him. I raised him a god-fearing man and he has his name etched over the heart of that girl in there, her name over his. Soulmates. God’s match.” She turned away and wrenched open the door, glaring openly at Bren. “Inside, now.”

“I have a man’s name over my heart,” Caleb said and stopped Mother Cochran cold. “Soulmate. ‘God’s match.’” He looked at once both challenging and nervous, wound up for a fight.

Bren watched at least four different emotions struggle for reign over Mother Cochran’s features and furrowed his brow. A small voice told him to drag her away, back inside.

“That,” she spat, “Is not God’s match. It is Satan’s poor imitation, a trap keeping you away from heaven. Give into it too many lifetimes and you’ll descend to hell after your final reincarnation.”

“Good thing I’m pagan then.” He caught Bren’s eyes one last time, a meaningful and thoroughly disappointed look before he left her blustering while he headed into the parking lot.

Heavy guilt washed over Bren in his wake and he rounded on Mother Cochran as a result. “Doesn’t God say to be kind…? Judge lest ye not be judged? Throwing stones?” Bren barely checked himself from railing against her for a change, wanting nothing more than to run after the other man and apologize. His break for fresh air only left him far more nauseated than before.

She cuffed his ear hard and shoved him through the door. “Respect your parents and don’t sass your elders. Wipe that disrespectful look off your face.”

He felt no better by the time they reached the table. “Sorry I left you worrying.” He kissed Cara’s cheek again. “I went outside for some fresh air, not feeling so well.”

After a sympathetic sound, Cara pulled back and brushed his ear. “Why’s your ear all red.”

His foster mother glared warning. “Wasn’t paying attention, smacked into something.”

“Always clumsy,” the old woman clucked.

Cara got the full story out of him that night and it sent her in a full, angry rant against his foster mother. “How unchristian of her!” She finished with frustrated tears.

Bren only found himself more confused as he spent the better part of half an hour comforting Cara. She cried hard enough she shook and clung to him, reacting as though she’d had a direct confrontation with the old woman.

He rocked her back and forth, crying his own silent tears. The moment struck him as one full of deep wounds she kept stubbornly hidden, on a par with grief, rather than brought on by the night’s events. It somehow resonated with him in a confusing way. He chalked it up to their soulmate connection and his overactive empathy. However, it wasn’t her pain he saw when he closed his eyes. No, he kept repeating Caleb’s disappointed gaze as he walked away.

When the frost giants first invaded midgard Elsa's mother stowed away on a war cart loaded with armor and weapons. When the fighting began she ran off into the frozen north of what is now known as Alaska. She was a smaller frost giant and was not liked by many of her kind. Even her husband a general in the kings army disliked her. When she became pregnant she knew the child would be shunned or killed for being weak like her so she left the kingdom and hid while the war began. When the asgardieans drove the frost giants back to there world and ended the war Elsa mother still pregnant with elsa stayed behind in hiding.

About 100 years after the war some humans found elsa and her mother but instead of fearing her and the toddler they see them as grate winter spirits and begin to worship them. For a few hundred years they prayed to her leaving offerings of gold and food and furs until religion began to change and they were forgotten. This was fine because elsa grew strong and lived happily with her mom for a at least 500 years before a tragic accident took her mother from her. There was a massive land slide causing a mountain of snow and ice and trees to fall and cover there home. Her mother was severely wounded and eventually died. Elsa was grown enough to take care of herself and her mother taught her how to hide her appearance to look like a human so looking like a child in her early teens,even though she was closer to 500, she went into the world of man and lived as an orphan. As she grew she learned the human language and how to live with them but when she accidentally loses control of her emotions her eyes burn red like a demon and sometimes things freeze. When this happens she is shunned as a demon or freak and run out of town. She never stays in one place for long and mostly lives in the snowy wilderness but when things begin to change and the world grows more advanced she leaves the snowy world she knows to explore. During these exorations wold war 1 and 2 and several other wars happened. Elsa chose to help the good guys win often secretly useing her powers. She worked as a nurse a spy an assassin and anything she could do. She met captain america once but they did not get to become friends. He took an ice bath before she ever met him again. Shield commander Nick fury found her and recruited her as a shield agent to help covertly for several years untill he felt he no longer needed her do they agreed she could remain a secret weapon in a time of need and he let her go off on her own. The next time she returns to Alaska it has been claimed as part of the United states of America and people have built up cities where once there were hardly even tiny villages. Elsa purchases a lot of land in the wilderness and builds her own homestead where she lives alone to present day. She only goes into town to purchase nessecerry items to eat and to see how the world changes. When heroes start appearing all over the world elsa begins to feel less like a freak but still doesn't feel brave enough to join them fearing they will hate her for being a creature that so many years ago tried to invade the world she now loves.

Elsa becomes an avenger by saving the lives of several people at a ski lodge resort when an avalanche threatens to wipe it out and destroy a ski lift. She freezes the avalanche with her frost powers creating a large wall around the resort lodge then when the lift starts to brake she uses her super strength to keep the large pole holding up the lift from braking. She holds it up by freezing it and using her brute strength to keep it from falling over until the last passenger is safely off the lift. Elsa then let's it fall safely away from the lodge and any one. After that she returns to her homestead not realizing the whole rescue was cought on camera and put online. One day about two weeks later captain America shows up at her door with black widow and they invite her to join the avengers. At first she is hesitant but agrees to stay for a week. Unfortunately that's the week loki attacks so her first week was very memorable.

Adjuster said they could not release that, which I said made those numbers unacceptable and unsubstantiated figures spewed out by a black box, that State Farm just paid these auto evaluators to spit out unjustified numbers that State Farm could not back up but wanted to hear.

It was the first time I had a claims adjuster on their heels, who could not ever come up with a credible defense to their ridiculous offers.

The BP oil spill is considered the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry and estimated to be 8% to 31% larger in volume than the previously largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill. This accident led to the release of 4.9 million barrels of oil into the sea.

The accident was caused by the explosion at the oil rig. The oil continuously leaked for 85 days until it was plugged. 11 workers died in this accident.

Almost 10 million pounds of oily residue was removed from Louisiana shorelines. It killed vegetation and caused erosion. The oil disaster affected the cellular function of the killfish. A US district court found BP responsible for the spill due to negligence. They had several fines and civil settlements totaling 60 billion dollars. It is still to date one of the most infamous oil spills in the US.

Ixtoc I oil spill accident led to the release of 140 million gallons of crude oil into the Bay of Campeche. Ixtoc I was an oil well bring which was being drilled in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico by a government-owned country Pemex in 1979. On June 3, the circulation of the drilling mud failed, causing an oil spill, explosion, and fire that led to the destruction and sinking of the rig.

The platform was attacked by the Iraqi helicopters and the slick caught fire. The rig was eventually plugged in September 1983.

Overall, 80 million gallons of oil spilled. Eleven people lost their lives during the capping. Skimmers and pumps of Norpol (a Norwegian company) were used for the cleanup process.

Luckily, no human life was lost in this accident. A total volume of 145,000-170,000 tonnes of oil entered the sea.

Although the accident took placed in the area having rich flora and fauna, the environmental damage was less. There was little damage to the local fish market. “Black rain” of oil droplets fell immediately to the east of the spill during the first 24 hours on wheat-growing and sheep-grazing fields, but no long term damage was recorded.

Amoco Cadiz oil spill took place on March 16, 1978. It was a very large crude carrier (VLCC) owned by Amoco Transport Corp.
