Please explain how postseason/the playoffs work in baseball

So, from the top, there are 30 teams: two leagues of 15 (American League and National League) primarily divided historically, and each league has 3 geographical divisions (East, Central, West) of 5 teams each.

The top team in each of these six divisions gets an automatic playoff bid. There are also three Wild Cards per league (it used to be two, they added a third last year with the new CBA). Those spots go to the top non-division winners.

A good justification for Wild Cards — in 2021, the Los Angeles Dodgers finished second in the NL West with 106 wins. The Braves were first in the NL East with 88 wins. The Dodgers should not be punished for playing in a harder division.

The added third Wild Card is good for the sport, I think, and I’m not just saying that because my team got WC3 last year. When there was only a 10-team postseason, it felt like everything was settled by August. This year, there are still 4-5 teams fighting for those last two NL Wild Card spots.

Also an advantage of the new WC structure: it actually matters what seed you get. The top two division winners get a bye, while the top two WCs face each other and WC3 plays the worst division winner.

If the playoffs started today, the NL division leaders are the Braves (101-56), Brewers (88-69), and Dodgers (97-60). The Wild Cards are the Phillies (88-69), Diamondbacks (83-74), and Cubs (82-75). So the Wild Card would go:

Braves and Dodgers: bye

Diamondbacks (WC2) @ Phillies (WC1)

Cubs (WC3) @ Brewers

Home team advantage is a big deal in baseball, especially for the Phillies, who have one of the best home records in the sport, so clinching a home series was important.

The Wild Card is a best-of-3. The winners of those series get to play the bye week teams in the Divisional Series. Right now, the Braves (1) play the winner of WC1/WC2, while the Dodgers (2) play the winner of WC3/other division winner.

The NLDS and ALDS are best-of-5, with the top seed getting the first 2 games at home and the bottom seed getting the next 3. Winners of the DS face off in the CS, which is a best-of-7 that goes 2-3-2 for home field advantage. The World Series is also best-of-7 and 2-3-2.

Tl;dr — 12 teams, four rounds. Better record gives you home field advantage and some extra rest.

The biggest stars and maybe the two best baseball players in the world were fantastic in the NLCS. Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts batted well over .300 and combined to produce 4 home runs, 15 RBIs, 15 runs, and 14 walks in the series. Facing Betts and Ohtani back-to-back in the lineup is already not fair for opposing pitchers, but neither was even the best Dodger at the plate. Tommy Edman took home the hardware, tying Corey Seagers' record for RBIs (11) by a Dodgers player in the NLCS on his way to claiming the series MVP. Edman doubled and homered in his first two plate appearances in the 10-5 Game 6 win. He has set the tone all postseason long and has come through every time he is called upon. Unstoppable.
