I think the lackluster reaction Shota Umino is got at WrestleKingdom and Wrestle Dynasty is definitely part of his story, but it's also interesting because he didn't "earn" those spots.

My experience with NJPW is that it kind of operates more like a real sport. If someone wins the qualifying matches, they are a main eventer, regardless of how the crowd felt about them previously. For example, Douki was a total loser a few years ago, but after a few good showings at Best of Super Juniors (and Desperado being his kind of life coach), the crowd gets behind him, sees him earning it, and buys him as the champion.

Shooter got that WrestleKingdom main event, but what did he really do to earn it? Usually that's the spot for the G1 Climax winner, but Shooter didn't win that--Zack did. I think Shooter still needs to develop a personality, but I also don't think his reaction would have been so negative if he had won the G1. Or if we ran this back after he won a New Japan Cup. Or any of the other ways that NJPW has someone rack up wins and "earn" their way to being the Ace.

This is definitely his story. English commentary was talking up how you can't just declare yourself the "Ace" of New Japan. But he also has not "won" the things you have to win to earn it.
