I’m sitting in the back of the sanctuary. I sang and cried at the first celebration, and right now I just want to be quiet, and listen. They’re singing Aretha. John Turk has died. He led the Glide Ensemble & Change Band for 38 years. He gave a huge chunk of his life to this place. When I think of musicians whom I admire, I don’t generally think of pop stars. I think of people like John Turk. He just kept showing up, until his body broke down. He was as devoted as anyone I’ve ever known to whatever the magic is that makes music or anything else worth it. Lots of other thoughts & feelings running through me. Thinking on how we all go away, and the world moves on. It seems as though we’re forgotten, and that can be scary and sad. I won’t forget John, though — and if I remember him by passing on the heart of what he gave to me, and someone passes that on, and on and on, that’s all the infinity I need. Thank you, John.
