Tickets now available for Peace Pilgrim’s induction into NJ Hall of Fame

EGG HARBOR CITY – Tickets are now available for Peace Pilgrim’s induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. The ninth annual NJ Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place 7 p.m., Sunday, May 7 at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park.

Peace Pilgrim, born Mildred Lisette Norman in Egg Harbor City 1908-1981, is among 15 individuals being inducted into the distinguished Class of 2017.

Peace Pilgrim, an American sage who walked her talk, embarked on a 27-year pilgrimage for peace at the head of the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., Jan. 1, 1953. She walked as a penniless pilgrim, wearing slacks, sneakers and a blue tunic with the words 10,000 Miles for Peace. She walked as a penniless pilgrim carrying only a toothbrush, comb and pen, speaking with anyone she met about how to obtain peace in the world. She fasted until given food and walked until given shelter, crossing the continent seven times over a span of 27 years. She passed on to a freer life in 1981, but left a lasting legacy that peace in the world is possible when enough people experience inner peace. 

“Induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame is the highest civilian honor that our state can bestow on someone,” said John Keegan, chairman emeritus of the NJHoF Foundation Board. “It’s a celebration of New Jersey and its greatest achievers, and a recognition of role models for our next generation. This is New Jersey’s version of the Academy Awards, so attendees can expect some surprise celebrity appearances.”

Peace Pilgrim is being inducted in the Public Service category, along with U.S. Army officer Philip Kearny, notable for his leadership of the First New Jersey Brigade during the Mexican-American and American Civil wars.

Other inductees include:

Arts and Letters - Author Carol Higgins Clark and news anchor Connie Chung.

Enterprise - Businessman Alfred Koeppe and founder of NY Waterway Arthur Imperatore, Sr.

Performing Arts - Singer, composer, actress, entertainer, and publisher Connie Francis; actress and TV personality Kelly Ripa; actor Ray Liotta; pop-rock musician Tommy James; and musician Wyclef Jean of The Fugees.

Sports - Professional soccer midfielder Carli Lloyd, Olympian and Basketball Hall of Famer Carol Blazejowski, heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner, and NFL Pro-bowler Rosey Grier.

An Unsung Hero will be announced in April.
