Nizami Ganjavi, Layla Majnun, Yogyakarta, Kakatua, Nov 2020, viii+211 hlm, 60.000 . . . . #nizamiganjavi #laylamajnun #sastraklasik $penerbitkakatua #jualbukusastra #katalogJBS (di Kedai JBS) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIEwpOcHz6-/?igshid=hxn0vfp5nfb5

Nizami & Majnun o Layla
Poetry is an undeniably important component of Persian literature. One of the texts of classical literature associated with the Persian-speaking world is Layla o Majnun (لیلی و مجنون). It was written by Nizami (نظامی), a 12th–century Persian poet of Ganja, which is located in modern-day Azerbaijan. Nizami was not a court poet, and it is claimed that he refused the position to “refused the position of court poet so that he could retain independence both of belief and of artistic expression.” Nizami is considered to be a figure of Sufi literature, although it is unclear whether he would have called himself a Sufi.

Layla o Majnun was written in masnavi form, which is a form characterized by distichs that have an internal rhyme that vary from line to line. The poem consists of 4,000 distichs. As a masnavi, it also had didactical elements. It tells a story that is believed to be of Arabic origin. The story is of a poet, Qays, who meets and falls in love with Layla. He tried to marry Layla but her family did not approve. He spent the rest of his life wandering the desert, rarely speaking to others and composing poetry about Layla, earning him the name Majnun (“that is, ‘possessed by a jinn or a genie; a madman”). They became symbolic of impossible love.

Poetry is an undeniably important component of Persian literature. Learning about Nizami and his piece further informed me about the historical process, place, and significance of the Persian poetic tradition and its influences. One of the most fascinating parts of researching this piece was finding the differences between this piece and its parallel in Arabic.

Malam Edan
Majnun menemukan rentak sangkar permainan maut
perpisahan dalam penyatuan
dan penyatuan dalam perpisahan
di setiap helaian nafasnya.

Majnun Layla
Tumblr media
For this culture blog, I thought it would be really interesting to write about a translated short story. I was not quite sure where to start, so I asked my father about some short stories he was familiar with growing up. He immediately suggested a story that my grandmother had told him quite often, and one that was fairly popular in Iran, entitled Layla va Majnun, or Majnun Layla (sometimes written as Layli). He said that it was one of his favorites, and where he got my name from. Naturally, I was interested in the idea of reading the story from which my father derived my name, so I found a copy of the book in Van Pelt in English, which translated the version written down by Nizami Ganjavi in the twelfth century.
Briefly, the story is about a young man who falls in love with a young woman named Layla. He writes poems about her and recites them publicly on the street. Because of his passion for her, many called the boy “majnun”, meaning madman. He one day decided to ask Layla’s father for her hand in marriage, but the father refused because of Majnun’s “madman” reputation and a family feud. Layla was forced to marry someone else and remains loyal to him despite the fact that she loves Majnujn. Majnun was devastated, and disappeared into the wild, where he lived out his days writing poems about Layla. Although there are several possibilities in the story for them to unite, even after the forced marriage, their love is ill-timed, and it tragically destroys them both.
From the preface, I learned that Nizami Ganjavi, a twelfth-century Persian poet, is believed to be the greatest romantic epic poet in all of Persian literature, and his version of Majnun Layla became highly influential in Persian culture.
I think the activity did challenge some preconceptions of mine, especially when it relates to other stories or plays about ill-fated love. For example, in the Western world, the most famous text or Western canon about ill-fated love is arguably Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, whose poetry and plays I enjoy very much. I think that for everyone educated in literature the West assumes that this is the archetype or epitome of the ill-fated love story, but I think Majnun Layla challenges that.
This also ties in with cultural differences I found. In comparison to Romeo and Juliet, or stories following the plotline of ill-fated love, it seems that there is more emphasis on the physical nature of relationships. However, Leyla and Majnun steers away from this entirely, and Majnun’s love for Leyla seems to be very pure and in a way divine, which reflects the importance of religion in Iranian society. Many passages could easily be attributed to one of the lovers, but also, to God.
I personally really enjoyed that the story made it often unclear whether the lovers were talking about their lover, or to a higher power, and thought it was really unique because I have not encountered this type of symbolism in Western poetry or storytelling.
I think the story also reflects an idea of privacy with regard to relationships - Majnun earned a poor reputation for publicizing his feelings for Leyla to the community, which was seen as highly inappropriate. I am not sure how relationships are formed and maintained in Iran today, but from what we have briefly mentioned in class about interactions between Iranian men and women in the public sphere, I gather that that Iranians are more private about romantic relationships. It seems to me that being public about romantic relationships is more insulting and abhorrent in Iranian communities, while in Western communities,  public displays of affection (physical or verbal) are more widely accepted, especially among younger generations.
Finally, I think that the poem, despite its cultural uniqueness, is something that is relatable to many audiences. I found it to be a really enjoyable read, and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates poetry and written language.
