Tinanong ako kagabi ng asawa ko kung pipirmahan na raw ba niya yung offer sa kaniya sa Ireland. Sabi ko may deadline ba kako, baka pwede pa namin tulugan ng ilang araw. Sabi niya wala naman.

Tinanong ko siya kung gaano niya ka-gusto, mga nasa 95% daw. Gusto raw niya kasi ng fresh start mula sa mga nangyari sa amin dito saka yung makabukod kami. I have under my belt 100 teacher training hours of "Restorative Yoga for the Elderly." I made it my excuse to live and study in Singapore some time in 2011 under the guise of wanting to guide my Mom to gently stretch in her old age. Her Alzheimer's was detected early so I think (looking back) this was my mad scramble to fight the anxiety that came with my Mom's diagnosis. Pattern shows that my default coping mechanism is to study. 🤷🏻‍♀️

She was still all right then, save for a worrisome fall (which prompted the revealing brain scan) and the usual forgetfulness that comes with being a Mom (aka kulit) - she was definitely still A1, tiptop, sharp as they come.

Most of us kids went to Singapore with her that year, my brothers to catch the F1 in Sepang, and the girls stayed in our Ate's apartment. Mom made us walk and walk and walk and walk around Singapore because walking was her thing. She super enjoyed wading around that fake beach shoreline in Vivo City's rooftop - when she waved at me to join her, and I said, "Is the water chlorinated?" She rolled her eyes at me - without saying a word she commanded me to take my shoes off, put them aside, and wade shin deep across a mall pond to her side.

We (again) walked and walked and walked in circles, mall-water sloshing the tips of our jeans chatting about real beaches we've been to.

Even though she thought it silly that I was studying superslow yoga in a Buddhist temple she still humored me by doing the stretches I taught her. She was often distracted and impatient and would say "let's just have coffee and chat" instead. When I was done with the teacher training course, I showed her my certificate and she asked me solemnly if I converted to Buddhism; it turned out she was worried that I was going to that Buddhist campus everyday for faith reasons. I assured her I wasn't and slightly reprimanded her because even if I did decide to become Buddhist she should still love me. (my turn to roll my eyes) 😉 She looked relieved.

I usually let Mom have her way, in fact many of our "scheduled yoga sessions" ended up being long walks around our village and then we'd end up in our parish church somehow (coincidentally daw) always in time for 6pm mass. 😳

I'd often hear her tell my brothers saying, "Na isahan ko si Gangging, akala niya walking-walking lang kami, tapos napasimba ko bigla!" then she'd laugh her infectious laugh while I pretend to look like I lost a championship match. She enjoyed winning, and though it was WAY different when I was younger (I may have inherited this 'win or die' gene from her) but when we both got older I (surprise surprise) learned to enjoy losing to her.

I vividly remember the last long walk we took (I didn't know then that it was to be the last but maybe I did) - Brother (JunBads) and I took one elbow each and we walked slowly up and down our street. I remember she told Merl (her trusty healthcare partner) that she need not come along and to stay home because she'll be okay with us kids. I didn't think much of it then but I think that was probably her telling Merl how happy she is that we were both there to accompany her on her usual walk.

While walking I asked her why she didn't use a cane or a walker and she said "What for? I have lots of children, five for each arm." 🥹 She would point to our shadows - stretching and fading, shrinking and moving as we walked beneath streetlamp after streetlamp. She said "I'm really the shortest now! I'm even shorter than my last two eggs." (again, the laugh) 🪺

She referred to us (Brother and me, her 2nd batch kids, number 9 and number 10) collectively as "her last two eggs." It became a joke that always showed up in our Easter cards and even in the dwindling text greetings.

I stopped doing yoga completely as things got busier, Mom got less and less mobile, and I was getting more and more ill at ease with silence, stillness scared me; I hated the quiet because I was wrestling with anticipatory grief. (More on this another time, remind me to write about it.) I stayed in the noise and the funk and the speed and the dribble and the hustle and the mess of the crowd - all so I don't need to feel the crush of the Alzheimer's wall closing in, so I don't always feel the fear of what was to come.

I just spent my first Easter Sunday without my Mom; this 'massive missing' rendered me either weepy or snippy most of Holy Week. I'm sure she's rolling her eyes again at me from wherever.

Ang Pilipinas sa Kuko ng Kahirapan

Makikita ang dalawang klase ng lipunan sa pagtingala sa guhit-tagpuan—matatanaw sa taas ang mga engrande at nagsisitaasang mga gusali ng mga mayayaman at nakaaangat; tila walang alam o pakialam sa paghihirap na nanunuot sa bawat yerong pinagtagpi-tagpi sa mundo ng ibaba. Ito ang mukha ng Pilipinas sa kuko ng liwanag.

Ang Pilipinas ay nabibilang sa mga pinakamahihirap na bansa sa Timog-Silangang Asya—baon sa trilyon-trilyong utang at papaunlad pa lamang hanggang ngayon. Ang ating mga tyansa sa panlipunang pag-unlad ay tuloy-tuloy na naisasakripisyo para sa personal na interes ng mga nakaupo sa pwesto—upang maisakilos ang sistema ng korapsyon, kasakiman, at katiwalian. Sa sistemang ito, masasabing karapat-dapat lamang sa pag-unlad ay ang piling kakaunti na may hawak ng kapangyarihan o pera. Tila ba'y walang karapatan ang karaniwang Juan sa lipunang itinayo sa dugo at pawis niya.

Sa paglawak ng dibisyon sa pagitan ng labis na paghihirap at labis na pagpapasasa sa yaman, nakukulong ang naunang klase sa kawalan ng oportunidad sa pag-unlad��na labis na ipinagkakait sa kanila ng sistema. Ilang bata pa kaya sa tambakan ang titingala sa kalawakan upang isipin na sulyap lamang ito ng kanilang mga yumaong pangarap na sumisilip sa bawat guwang? Kung saan ang edukasyon ay hindi tinitingnan bilang karapatan, ngunit bilang napakataas na pribiliheyo na hindi makakamit. Ang mga kawalang-hustisyang ito sa ating masa ay dumadaloy sa bawat aspeto ng lipunan—mula sa kawalan ng boses sa gobyerno na magsasalita para sa kanilang mga hinanaing, hindi sapat na sahod sa kabila ng mga kondisyon na iniinda sa trabaho, kawalan ng matinong “healthcare system”, at marami pang iba. Ang lahat ng ito ang kumo-korte sa hugis ng Pilipinas bilang isang lipunan—isang bansang pinapakilos ng korapsyon at kahirapan.

Dapat manindigan tayo para sa hinaharap ng ating bansa—isang bansa na makalalaya mula sa karahasang dulot ng isang korap na sistemang kumikitil sa bayan. Upang makamit ito, dapat mapukaw ang ating kolektibong diwa tungo sa pagpapanagot sa mga abusado sa kapangyarihan at pagbangon sa masalimuot na pagtitiis at pamumuhay sa kahirapan.

Ekonomikong kalamidad: Isang pagsusuri sa iba’t ibang mundo ng lipunan

Isang pelikulang Koreano ang Parasite na naglalahad ng kwento ng isang pamilya na naghihingalong mangarap ng pag-angat mula sa kahirapan. Tinatawag na Kim ang pamilyang ito. Alinsunod sa hangarin ng pamilyang Kim na makalaya mula sa kahirapan, ginamit nila ang isang mayamang pamilya, ang pamilyang Park. Ginamit nila ang mga ito sa pamamagitan ng pagsasagawa ng isang panggagantso o linlang. Nagsinungaling ang panganay na anak at nagpakilala bilang guro, at inirekomenda rin niya ang kanyang kapatid bilang isang art therapist. Tinuloy ng pamilyang Kim ang kanilang panggagantso sa pamilyang Park hanggang sa ang buong pamilya ang mapasailalim sa pamamahala ng pamilyang park at magkaroon ng trabaho sa kanilang bahay.

Nagustuhan ko ang kwento dahil sa mga plot twist, tulad ng nangyari sa huling bahagi kung saan ipinakita na pinatay ng tatay ang kanilang amo at nagtago sa kanilang basement. Naintriga rin ako sa kabuuang kwento at sa mga aral na maaaring mapulot dito.

Sa pelikulang ito, naipakita ang isang mahalagang isyu sa lipunan, ang economic inequality o ang hindi pantay-pantay na kalagayan sa ekonomiya. Napapansin ang malaking agwat ng estado sa buhay ng pamilyang Kim at Park kahit sa kanilang mga tahanan pa lamang. Nakatira sa isang underground apartment ang pamilyang Kim, sumisimbolo ng kanilang mababang estado sa lipunan, samantalang ang pamilyang Park naman nakatira sa isang mataas at maayos na bahay, na kumakatawan sa kanilang mataas na posisyon sa lipunan.

Ayon sa United Nations (2020), "Inequalities of opportunity affect a person’s life expectancy and access to basic services such as healthcare, education, water, and sanitation. They can curtail a person’s human rights, through discrimination, abuse and lack of access to justice.” Sa ating lipunan, kapag hindi ka mayaman, limitado ang mga oportunidad mo at mas komplikado ang buhay. Katulad ng ipinakita sa pelikula, may isang pangyayari na tumatak sa akin: nang umulan isang gabi, nagpasalamat ang pamilyang Park sa magandang panahon at malinis na paligid dahil sa ulan. Ngunit hindi nila alam na ang mga tao sa ibaba, tulad ng pamilyang Kim, nabahaan. Ipinapakita nito na iba-iba ang mga karanasan ng mga tao at madalas, hindi ito pantay-pantay.

Why we shouldn't vote for Marcos:

A total debt of $395.51 Billion foreign aid that is still taxed for until now. There was a 4300% rise in debt from 1965-1986. Besides building bridges, Marcos constructed in 1976 the overpriced Bataan nuclear power plant worth $2.3 Billion and loans which the Filipinos' tax had only finished paying in full on 2007.

Marcos stole P3.363 trillion if rates are applied to the year 2015, official poverty incidence rate increased to almost half of the Philippines, underemployment rate rose from 10% to 33% in 1985. PH debt grew by $16 Billion in just 5 years.

About 34000 were tortured, 70000 were detained for being "enemies of the state", 3240 were salvaged or killed during Martial Law.

The PCGG recovered a total of P167.5 Billion from Marcos ill-gotten wealth. Kung wala ninakaw, walang ibabalik.

Imelda Marcos is guilty of 7 counts of graft but not imprisoned because of old age.

Si Bongbong Marcos ang makakapag mana lahat ng nakaw na yaman ng tatay niya, he is claiming na graduate siya sa Oxford pero Special Diploma lang ang binigay. What made me vote for Leni Robredo:

1. VP Leni Robredo has been releasing her SALN for years now and making the document public. She is not corrupt. OVP received the highest COA rating thrice.

2. She is a human rights lawyer and an economist. Her educational attainment is enough to prove that she is capable of leading the country. She has a doctorate degree in Humanities, Public Administration and Doctor of Laws - the highest earned academic degree.

3. Leni Robredo received a Special Awardee for Public Service.

She is the only presidential candidate who has the least net worth. She is not corrupt as seen by the statement from COA. I'm voting her because she is transparent and she is doing great in her job by serving the Filipino people. She apologizes when she makes a mistake and she is always present. She is the true definition of a leader. Her platform when she becomes a president is focused on recovering our economy and we can trust her with that because she's a graduate of BA Economics in UP Diliman.

She plans to reopen the economy by realigning the national budget to address the pandemic, allotting more funds for healthcare services & facilities, to empower the healthcare system & to invest heavily in agriculture, particularly in technology and farm-to-market infrastructure. She plans to create more jobs to bring back foreign direct investments, which have been in a steady decline during Duterte’s term. This year, annual FDI dropped by 24.6%, the lowest in five years. To make that happen, her priority is to make sure that pandemic is under control.

Malapit nang matapos ang training period, pero bago pa man matapos 'yon, mukhang made-deploy na ako sa isang real project. 'Yung pinagawa sa akin na practice ngayon e isa sa mga deferred project last year na na-hold and no one knows kung matutuloy pa ba siya, probably not, so real-world data pa rin naman.

Anyway, sa kabilang work naman, isa sa mga assigned topic sa 'kin ay i-analyze daw ang marketing strategy ng Apple. Hahaha. In fairness, 'di ko alam kung sobrang biased lang nitong nabasa ko (focusing on all the positive points) or maganda ang pagkakasulat, pero it seems na Apple is doing great in terms of management. Ewan ko lang ngayon since taghirap na more than ever and nagkikeep up na rin ang competition.

Speaking of management, how great it would be kung tunay na collaborative ang healthcare. Just stating the obvious pero napaka-compartmentalized kasi. For Apple, nagwork 'yung experts leading experts strategy. For us, parang ganu'n din naman. 'Yung training officer, expert naman 'yun sa field niya. Very hierarchical, you learn from your seniors, you teach your juniors. Pero wala kami nu'ng mga "accountability without control" eme hahaha. Siyempre, kung nasa ortho team ka, bakit (or paano) ka naman makikisawsaw sa bituka ng pasyente or depression. Sa bagay, meron din namang multidisciplinary team conference na tinatawag.

Contrary to what most peole know, awareness is pretty prevalent already in our society. Sex education in school, political awareness in mass media, body positivity in social media, LGBTQIA  acceptance in our community, racial diversity in movies, and so on and so forth. As someone who is a GenZ, I can say that everything was and still is being spoon-fed onto us ever since we were born up until now that we are already teenagers and will most likely continue 'til we become adults. The cycle goes on and on for as far as we know. But as I think of it, is being aware and educated enough? What's the next step and how do we use those information to create a change in our society? You see, with all the means that we have as of the moment, it is not so hard to educate ourselves about certain things that are "new" or different to what we got used to. Everyone clearly knows that gay people exists, that a person's skin color varies according to where they come from, that a boy has a penis while a girl has a vagina (biologically speaking) and they can use it for reproduction, that some people are born petites while others are naturally curvy, and the loooong list continues for this and that. But what creates a division between people if they're already aware and educated? Simple, it's their own perception of things based on the environment that they grew up in — including their home, school, peers, and workplace. There are a lot of factors to consider and this is more than just opening your eyes to what's currently happening in front of you. People think that being aware and educated is enough but instead of acceptance, tolerance and/or refusal is what they do.

•"Ang daming nabubuntis na kabataan kada taon 'no? Wala nang magagawa, nadisgrasya na eh." (A lot of teenagers get pregnant every year, huh? It already happened, we can't do anything about that) — WRONG. Adults are aware of the concept of sex as well as the methods to achieving safe sex to not get pregnant or get sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)  and teenagers are not new to this, too, as this is being taught in school starting from 5th or 4th grade under Science and Health classes. However, young people tend to suffer from peer pressure. They feel the need to have sex, too, and they think that it's fine since everybody's already doing it anyway. Let's also not forget that there are a lot of cases wherein guys pressure their partners to do "it" with them since they think that being in a relationship means consent to sex, too. And whenever teenagers would like to practice safe sex, they suffer from public humiliation instead. In the Philippines, you have to be at least 18 before you are allowed to buy condoms and you'd even get the stares from the people around you. Since this is a conservative country, your parents would most likely get mad at you, too.

•"Akala mo kung sino, eh nagpalaglag naman 'yan ng bata. Pokpok kasi kaya ayan, nabuntis ng kung sino sino lang." (Who does she think she is when she had an abortion when she got pregnant by some guy that she had sex with? Such a slut) — WRONG. Abortion is healthcare. Why she got an abortion is out of our business. I'm not pro-abortion but a pro-choice instead. There are a lot of reasons why a woman would get an abortion and who are we to judge them for doing it, right? Their body, their choice! If one is not ready to conceive, why should we force them to care for a child that they didn't even want in the first place? "Why have sex then?" — I already said it and will say this again, these people probably don't have access to contraceptives and condoms. Not everyone is as privileged as you are. Stop being so entitled and grow up.

•"Bakla 'yung kapitbahay natin kaya huwag kayong lalapit doon kasi baka mahawa kayo ng kabaklaan niya. Hindi na nahiya sa diyos." (Our neighbor is gay so don't go near them because you might be gay, too. They have no respect to God) — WRONG. Being gay is not a disease and you cannot be "infected" by it. Also, just because someone is gay, doesn't mean that they're disrespecting God. And stop assuming that everyone believes in God because some people don't and you just gotta live with that. You cannot dictate people on who to love just because of your religious beliefs. Do not go around pushing your beliefs down other people's throats because they're just normal people trying to live a normal life. Let us not define people depending on their gender. Statements such as, "You're a man that's why you can't cry", "You're a woman that's why you have to wear skirts", "You're bisexual so you probably already had sex with both boys and girls", "You're pansexual? Why do you dress like that then?", are very offensive even if you're cisgender or not.

These are just some of scenarios that shows how people tend to hate instead of trying to accept and understand other people. Now answer me, why do situations like this still exist despite the majority of the population being aware and educated enough? Because 1) They're afraid to stray away from the belief that was taught to them while growing up. 2) They do not know how to act out according to the information that they now hold. 3) They think that being "okay" with things is the same as "accepting" it. As long as they don't say anything offensive, then they can avoid being labelled as "ignorants". But that's not acceptance, that's tolerance. Instead of just educating people through seminars and the likes, how about we start creating a safe space for people so that they can learn how to gather the courage that they need in order to speak up about what they already know? Let us teach them how to express their emotions in various ways like writing, singing, acting, drawing, painting etc. etc. so that they can influence others to act instead of just being silent. Because how do we expect to see changes if we're so afraid of speaking up against toxic beliefs in our society? Being aware and educated is not enough. We have to ignite the spark in our hearts and stand up for what is right.

Sabi nga ni R, legit na legit avoidant talaga ako kaya naman, kailangan natin ng mas maraming variables na hindi puro controlled kahit napakahirap na parang mamatay na lang ako kesa magpadugo ng mga uncontrolled variables. LOL.

The med world is dominated by male-focused research which does not make sense at all. Pero in the name of consumption and production, the world of healthcare research is keeping up with all the Bettys and Veronicas because Archies are down-trending. Hahahahahahahahahaha.

Ganun rin sa pagpili ng kandidato, hindi lamang puro pangako ang ating titignan sa kanila. Oo, pangako sila nang pangako, may plano ba sila? Sila ba ay may kakayahang upang matupad ang mga planong ito?

Kaya noong Tanglaw Grand Rally sa Laguna, nagsalita si Sharon Cuneta at sinabi niya na ang mga slogang “Gobyernong Tapat, Angat Buhay Lahat” at “Hello Pagkain, Goodbye Gutom” ay hindi simpleng slogan lang–kaakibat nito ang mga planong nakalatag para sa ikabubuti ng ating bansa. At ang platapormang ito ay pinag-isipan at pinag-aralan nang mabuti, realistic at hindi idealistic, hindi bara-bara lang at hinding-hindi puro unity lang ang sabat sa lahat ng problema ng bansa.

Kaya ngayong darating na eleksyon, ako ay pipili ng mga lider na may konkretong plano. Mga may napatunayan at may mapapatunayan pa.

Sa mga Filipino.

Sa mga magsasaka at mangingisda.

Sa mga estudyanteng kagaya ko na nilalaban ang aming kinabukasan.

Isa sa mga kahanga-hangang katangian ni Leni Robredo bilang public servant ay ang kanyang pagiging maagap at maabilidad sa paghanap ng simple at epektibong paraan sa paglutas ng suliranin.

Noong 2020, pumutok ang COVID-19 sa bansa at ang buong mundo ay nagkukumahog sa pagbili ng PPEs. Sa halip na makipagsabayan ang OVP, kumausap siya ng mga komunidad nang sa gayon ay makapag-produce tayo ng sarili nating PPEs.

Hindi lang niya natulungan ang mga healthcare workers, nabigyan niya rin ng pagkakataon ang mga ilaw ng tahanan na kumita ng pera. Disenteng trabaho para sa hapag-kainan.

Kaya gusto nating manalo si Leni Robredo sa darating na eleksyon. Kakampi ng mga maliliit na tao. Laging nakatuon sa pagtulong at pag-angat ng mga nasa laylayan.
