Plein Air #5. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. Gouache. October 22, 2024.
This fall day is too beautiful to do office work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did some touch-ups at home.
Tumblr media
One up: this was just a lovely painting experience.
One improve: need more color diversity, gotta remember that gouache changes when it dries and things dull down.
Painted this one off a very busy trail. Met another beginner plein air painter interested in the set up, and did a happiness chant with a pair of Buddhists. An art fan came by and really want to buy it, so I sold it to him for a dozen homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Not bad.

Frog on a log in a bog.
The bull frog, while invasive to the Nisqually delta, is still a delight to behold. Frogs, unlike birds, will hold nice and still for the camera. I watched him for nigh on an hour, and I cherished every minute of it. Except for when I had to steal away into the bush for a piss. Or was that before I spotted him? I think it was.

Let’s Be Frank
We spend many weekends driving between Portland and Seattle. We are always thrilled by the views in Nisqually. The refuge has recently been renamed in honor of Billy Frank. (Thanks Obama) . That of course led me to research the man. And what a man he was. And today March 9th is his birthday. Billy Frank Jr. (March 9, 1931 – May 5, 2014) was a Native American environmental leader and advocate…

A set of four black and white photographs of a Great Blue Heron in a canal and three other Heron photographs were added to the shop today. One photograph is a composite of three photographs blended together, to create the 'Heron in Flight' image. There is one of a Heron on a small patch of land in the estuary, with some seagull friends. There is an abstract photograph of a Heron on a fallen tree, with posts from the boardwalk in the background. All can be found in my BIRDS folder.

Spring is creeping up the mountain! Snow still wraps the mid-to-high elevations of the park, but at low elevations early season wildflowers are beginning to bloom. Look for coltsfoot, trillium, yellow violets, and skunk cabbage along the road between the Nisqually Entrance and Longmire. Holly-leaf Oregon-grape (Berberis aquifolium) is less common, but you can find it blooming in a few low elevation areas in the park, including at Longmire. The lovely patch pictured here is located in a planted island near the Nisqually Entrance, visible as you drive in and out of the park. Holly-leaf Oregon-grape has shiny dark green leaves with spiny edges similar to its namesake. Its bright yellow flowers form large clusters at the end of each branch. What early season wildflowers are you beginning to see at home or in the park?

Plein Air #4. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge 01. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, Washington. Gouache. October 11, 2024.
Tried out my new Plein Air set up. Made popular by James Gurney, this one was made by TaylorSeamountShop (Etsy); it’s the only version I’ve found with a removable back support for larger paintings. This worked great! Loved it.
Tumblr media
One up: The set-up worked great. Built-in magnets kept the pallet (metal pencil case) and water cup (small tin can) in place. Easy and functional.
One improve: Ok on the painting, also first time trying to paint like this. Spent way too much time putzing on the block-in. Half the painting is in low tide, the other high tide (and I didn’t even notice till posting it).
Colors: titanium white, yellow ochre, burnt umber, cadmium yellow light, pyrrole red, ultramarine blue.

The other big clue about the 1700 Cascadia quake, aside from that tsunami, was something called a "ghost forest" - a collection of dead tree stumps all killed at once by inundation with salt water when the land dropped by six feet all at once. Tree ring analysis in comparison with trees still living nearby dated the earthquake to sometime around 1699 or 1700, which matched up with that "orphan tsunami"!
[send me an emoji and I will send you a fun* fact about my special interest(s)] *“fun” is kind of relative here tbh
