The wildlife refuge had a greeter to say hello.
(The Pacific Chorus Frogs are just finishing up their metamorphosis, and were literally everywhere, but I appreciated this lad hanging out on the brochure holders)
That's awesome! And Nisqually NWR is a really beautiful place.

Plein Air #5. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. Gouache. October 22, 2024.
This fall day is too beautiful to do office work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did some touch-ups at home.
Tumblr media
One up: this was just a lovely painting experience.
One improve: need more color diversity, gotta remember that gouache changes when it dries and things dull down.
Painted this one off a very busy trail. Met another beginner plein air painter interested in the set up, and did a happiness chant with a pair of Buddhists. An art fan came by and really want to buy it, so I sold it to him for a dozen homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Not bad.

Mount Rainier, Park 3!
The hike back down our trail was foggy and as beautiful as the way up! We saw several deer and lots of grouse who took up plenty of trail for the their small size! We also hiked to both Myrtle and Narada Falls to take in more of the glacier river that also make up the park. Fun fact- the milky blue gray color comes from "glacier flour", the term for the finer than sand sediment that travels along when the ice melts.
On our way down Paradise Valley Road we stopped at several scenic overlooks. One in particular showed Nisqually Glacier and where it had reached historically. As early as the 1890’s the glacier was noted to be receding and between 1896-2015 it lost over 20 square miles. This glacier is one of 29 in Mt Rainier and all have receded due to a warming climate.
As we weaved our way down mountain roads we reached the historic Longmire area of the park. When Mount Rainier was established as a national park in 1899 the town became its headquarters. The museum was built in 1916 as a main office and today houses exhibits on the geology and wildlife of the park. What is now the Longmire wilderness info building was another main admin building and is from 1930. We also checked out the National Park Inn, general store and transportation station exhibit. Finally we rode over Nisqually Suspension Bridge and wrapped a wonderful, if rainy, day!

Plein Air #4. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge 01. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, Washington. Gouache. October 11, 2024.
Tried out my new Plein Air set up. Made popular by James Gurney, this one was made by TaylorSeamountShop (Etsy); it’s the only version I’ve found with a removable back support for larger paintings. This worked great! Loved it.
Tumblr media
One up: The set-up worked great. Built-in magnets kept the pallet (metal pencil case) and water cup (small tin can) in place. Easy and functional.
One improve: Ok on the painting, also first time trying to paint like this. Spent way too much time putzing on the block-in. Half the painting is in low tide, the other high tide (and I didn’t even notice till posting it).
Colors: titanium white, yellow ochre, burnt umber, cadmium yellow light, pyrrole red, ultramarine blue.
