we've been going through some nintendogs and nintendogs+cats games - some are ours from years ago, some are recently-acquired. but all of them come with some little pieces of history that i don't want to see disappear forever when i return people's dogs/change owner names etc, so i thought i'd memorialise them here. eventually i'm going to return all the other people's dogs, change the owner names, etc, but without resetting the game entirely... so i wanted to make sure they're remembered. even if it's just by me.

first: from 2016-2017, this is our oldest nintendogs game. our actual oldest one was acquired in about... 2007, maybe? maybe later than that, we were pretty late getting it compared to other people. but that cartridge is lost to time. that, or maybe it's the same one after a reset and i just don't recognise anyone in the friends list... but i'm really not sure.

we must have been playing it sometime in 2016-2017; the owner name and the name of the corgi match my host's name at the time (hence why it's scribbled out, they don't go by it anymore) and the GSD is named after a friend we had at the time. the rest, aside from Lucky who i think might have been one of the old owner's dogs, are all named after star trek characters. 2016-2017 was our star trek phase so it makes sense.

oh right, this. the friends list tells me that whoever had it before was playing in 2011-2012, which really makes me curious... i'm not sure if i bought this game from someone else, or if my friend gave it to me and those were their old friends or something. i don't recognise the usernames at all, i can't think of anyone we knew in 2011-2012 that matches those... so who knows. the answers are lost to time, but i'm glad i can sort of. memorialise them all here.

next up: i think this is nintendogs+cats... golden retriever edition? i can't recall right now. i only got it a few days ago, and it looks like the owner was playing in 2011. they seem to have spent the most time with lexy, the others didn't have many tricks unlocked. it's interesting that there's no info about the owner - i wonder if that's because it's the +cats version, so it's tied to a Mii, which i of course don't have? but it still has the old Mii's appearance... maybe they really just didn't ever put a message or present up, who knows. i guess i can test that when more of my +cats versions arrive.

i really like lexy, i wish we could keep her... unfortunately in all but one of these games (not including the first one, our own), the dogs all have lowercase names or names with symbols in them, and i just can't stomach that sadly. they have to have proper case names or it feels 'wrong' to me. i haven't returned these dogs yet, but i think i'll spend some extra time with lexy when i do. this person also only had these three dogs, there was no one in the dog hotel.

here's dalmation and friends. this one is my personal favourite (this specific game, not dalmatian+friends in general)! this person clearly put a lot of time and love into the game; james was almost at the top position for flying disc competitions and had high ranks in all the others too! i also just love jane 66's profile, it has so much personality. i think reading this one is when i knew i wanted to take pictures of them all rather than let them be completely lost to time.

i also love that they had two identical beagles! i would never think to adopt two of the same dog but it's sweet that they liked them enough to have two. i can't be sure, but i feel like rex might have been their first dog since he's a dalmatian and the others sort of overtook him later - or maybe he was bought last, for the sake of having the 'title dog', and left in the hotel... who knows! i really like this one. i kind of don't want to return the dogs at all, but like i said: the symbols in the names grate on me too much to keep them, sadly.

finally, dachshund and friends. this one is interesting; it looks like the last owner might only have been playing the game for a day or so. they taught Rowan the first three tricks (you can only teach three a day), didn't enter any competitions, and only have 26 points as you can see. i kind of wonder what happened - did they have the game for a long time and do a reset just before they gave it away? who knows.

their username and message are so charming to me, there's so much personality there. it's also really interesting to me that they didn't pick a profile picture, and that they called themselves 'Root' in their message but didn't use that for their owner name! kind of like saying 'I'm Samuel, but you can call me Sammy', haha. it's nice.

that's all the ones i have for now. i have a couple more that should be delivered in a few days. i also have (or, well, don't have) two other games that are lost to me: nintendogs+cats toy poodle edition, and nintendogs+cats golden retriever edition. i'd like to talk about those too, though i don't have pictures of any of them.

golden retriever was my first +cats game, i bought it in 2017 which must have been when i first got a 3ds. i had a great dane puppy called schultz, and a little black and white kitten whose name i don't remember. i'm sure i had others, but i don't remember them either. i know screenshots of them did exist somewhere, but i think the old blog and discords i posted them to are long gone unfortunately. i last played it in 2022, which is when i also ordered +cats: toy poodle and +cats: french bulldog (i still have french bulldog).

i was going through some really heavy irl stuff at the time (well, some of us were - not me specifically but you know, haha) and i think our littles and caretakers were fronting a lot. so we wanted to have multiple games for ourselves. in french bulldog, we have a french bulldog called Egghead and an unnamed pit bull terrier - we must have bought it and then stopped playing within seconds lol. i don't remember any of our toy poodle version dogs/cats. i'm not sure what happened to the other cartridges; i know we were playing them all at a friend's house a lot, so whether i left them there or i accidentally threw them out while cleaning, or they're still hidden away somewhere, who knows. it's unlikely i'll find them again though. i think my friend is likely to have thrown them out thinking they were someone else's, and if they were here i'm sure i'd have found them while we were packing all of our games away...

oh, right. finally: a little shoutout to the very, very first nintendogs we ever had. it was nintendogs: chihuahua and friends, and we adopted a little black chihuahua called Chichi (after the petz game) and a brown and white spaniel called Faith (i think after my friend's oc, or a tv show character we liked). i know we had other dogs but i don't remember them at all. we probably had trouble bonding with them, like we often do if we have more than two pets.

° He had a red DSI and mostly played Super Princess Peach, despite disliking cute things(he liked being able to use yucky emotions to do good, even if it is virtually. Helped a lot as a kid.) He later got a red 3ds Xl and mostly played nintendogs.

° He likes to watch kdramas

° He listens to kpop

° He actually likes anime. Mostly watches romance, but also enjoys slice of life (he imagines himself having a normal childhood) and mystery. He really enjoys Hyoka

° He is pretty good with all things photography and filming. (Duh). He can also edit videos pretty well and makes edits for his favourite characters under another name.

° He wants to go into photography and film, but will likely be forced into finance of business by his mother

Puppies World 3D Review

Disclaimer: I have not 100% Nintendogs, have not played the newer Nintendogs+Cats editions, and rarely if ever used the commands feature in my Nintendogs game, so if some of my comparisons seem off that is probably why.

So, since the 3DS EShop was closing, I decided to get a couple of games that happened to grab my attention, and one I was curious about was Puppies World 3D. I had been playing a bit of Nintendogs recently and wanted to see how it would compare. That is what lead me to make this review. So, let's get into it :-)

The models for the puppies are exceptionally cute, and I actually find them cuter than the Nintendogs models. I am particularly fond of the German Shepherd model, so I chose that as my first dog and named him Beanie.

It was an interesting choice to have the in-game days progress at a faster rate than real life days. It tripped me up at first, having been used to the Nintendogs real-world tied system of time, but was quickly adjusted once I realised what was happening. However, the inclusion of a time system in the game becomes rather redundant when all in-game actions can be taken as many times as the user likes. The fact that there are no time limits is very appreciated, even if it is confusing. It is also nice to have the dog notify you when it needs care with the icon.

The animated pixel art featured for the icons and dog tricks are also very cute, and I admire them a lot, especially considering simpler icons could have done the job just fine if the developers had so chosen.

The fact that tricks are learned through a drag-n-drop minigame is an unexpected concept, but an appreciated one all the same. The mic-input tricks of Nintendogs may have been more immersive, but the minigame approach in Puppies World 3D is much less frustrating (and embarrassing) than yelling commands at your console. Although this does get quite tedious after a while, since the game wants you to complete this minigame maybe around ten times for each of the eight tricks.

The game introduces some photo modes, including the ability to take photos of and place stickers on the photos of your dogs, as well as a AR mode, that lets you take a photo of your room and then play with your dog there (albeit only letting you play with discs and tennis balls). There is also supposedly an AR-Card mode, which I assume would function like the AR cards that came bundled with the 3DS, but since I don't have access to the card I can't actually say. Actually pretty ingenious in my opinion, though it is disappointing that they seem to have only done the bare minimum with the concept.

However, these are where the positives end. Unfortunately, the gameplay falls flat compared to that of nintendogs.

The disc throwing physics are not as dynamic of fun to use, and can feel sluggish and weighed down, even on more powerful throws (the same goes for the tennis balls, which throw like they have weights inside), not to mention the difficulty that the puppies have actually catching the disc. You could be spending tens of minutes throwing the disc for your dog before it even catches it a single time, and when it finally does, you will be disappointed by the total lack of animation or character when it does so. It is more than just challenging - it is nothing but frustration. If there is a trick to making this minigame easier, the game certainly does not make it easy for you to work it out.

The game also copies the concept of walks and the park. The walking simulator is fine, allowing you to take your dog out for a walk in a 3D neighbourhood populated with various characters. The characters, at least to me, feel quite flat though- and not just because they utilise static 2D sprites. All they seem to be is game tips with faces, barely any substance. I wasn't expecting characters in a childrens petsim game to be the most compelling, but even Nintendogs managed to make an interesting character, ie Archie, who was entertaining and memorable.

The park is also very grating on the eyes, functioning like Nintendog's park, but with no other dogs to play with and assets that look like they were pulled straight from stock photo packs and copy pasted around the landscape. The landscape being practically a block of offensively vibrant green.

But the worst offender of all is the "combination tricks" this game introduced. Conceptually, it is actually very interesting! Tricks that have to be performed by selecting two other tricks at once, such as combining "sit" and "speak" to perform "yawn." It introduces a challenge beyond just commanding your dog to do one trick - there is an element of memory too. But then you get to actually performing the tricks... and it quickly becomes clear that this portion of the game, at least to me, has intricacies that are difficult to understand and are not explained. Many of the combination tricks are very fun and interesting to discover, like the breakdance and ballerina moves. But then some just seem to not make sense and seem to be misprogrammed, like "sneeze" having the dog stand up on its hind legs and wave its paws as if it were begging, and then the actual "beg" command only having the dog play the "paw" animation (raising a single paw while sitting), but mirrored. And then you enter the competitions, and it gets worse. They will start telling you to give your dog commands that I haven't found any way to perform. It is possible that they are just extra hidden commands, but as far as I can tell, you are only able to combine two commands together, and I have tried every combination, and still not found some of the commands they are requesting, such as "howl." Even if they are hidden behind some sort of mechanic or "level," these mysterious combination commands are never explained! Either it is the result of an unfinished game, or it is bad game design that leaves you confused and frustrated. Either way, I ended up feeling cheated after the effort I put in to train my dog, and very confused and disappointed. I dis not enjoy this.

Some immersion breaking nitpicks are that at each point that the time of in-game day changes, the game stops you for a moment while it resets your room. It also locks you out of taking any actions at all while your dog is eating or drinking, placing you in a glorified cutscene. Also, the "mentor" character greets you every in-game morning with "Congrats! Challenge Clear!" Which if having someone intrude your home every morning wasn't hellish enough is very interruptive and robotic, too.

All in all, I have found it a game that I am able to enjoy, but which has some glaring issues that keep it from having the same charm or level of enjoyment as the ever so classic Nintendogs. If you are interested in this game, I would say that it is worth a try if you can find it for cheap (or dare I say free), but overall you're probably better off with a copy of Nintendogs, or maybe even not playing at all.

Also, I wish the pixel art icons for this game were avaliable online somewhere. I do quite like those. And the homescreen icon is very cute as well.

i think that on a conceptual level, emulation of an emulation is extremely funny to me. like yes, i am going to play specifically the wii virtual console version of the legend of zelda: majora's mask on specifically dolphin emulator. im gonna play the 3ds version of pokemon yellow for the gameboy color, on my computer using the citra emulator. side note but apparently different versions of essentially the same game have completely different ratings for citra playability. what the hell does nintendogs + cats golden retriever edition have that makes it harder to emulate than the toy poodle edition of the same damn game. waht's going on there....?

And I want you all to know how happy I am that the game’s praises are finally being sung. All of the kids who grew up with Gen 6 are finally old enough for their nostalgia to have weight, we’ve gotten to the point where people are making retrospectives about it! That’s insane to me!

I’ve always been a ride or die but for 10 years I had to watch people shit all over it and do nothing about it!!

Not to say that the criticism isn’t warranted. I’ll be the first to jump down the throat of a million dollar company who underperforms, but I’m tired of pretending that the game is completely garbage with nothing to offer.

For many of my generation, X and Y was their first Pokémon game. I watched the anime, both Kanto and Unova, but seeing, feeling, and playing Pokémon is so much more intimate.

It was just the 4th grade, the only other game I had at the time was Nintendogs + Cats, which I loved dearly. One day during a movie day or something like that, my friend had his 3DS out and was trying to catch/defeat Yveltal in Pokémon Y. He saved right before and was passing it around to show off the boss fight, and eventually he let me play. I lost the battle like an idiot of course, knowing nothing about type matchups even with a Mega Lucario on my side. Still, my interest was piqued and I wanted to play more.

Then, miraculously, he offered to buy me a copy of X. Of course I accepted, and the very next day when I was walking home he gave it to me. It had the plastic wrapping still on it and everything, I have no idea if he had that kind of money or if his parents were just that kind, but sometimes I wish I still knew him so that I could thank him for the present. 10 years later I’m still here thinking about it.

I broke my coral pink 3ds at some point, but when Christmas came around that year they got me a new one. The limited edition Year of Luigi one to be exact. I got City Folk that same Christmas, and New Leaf the next, but I digress!

I was so happy that I would open up the game and just spend hours skating around Kalos. I missed it that much, and I finally got to finish the game too since my last 3DS broke before I could.

It’s crazy how long ago that was, and the fact that I’m still a trainer to this day. It almost doesn’t feel real, but at the same time it’s an honor to say I’ve been a fan for this long.

Regardless of the objective quality of the game, it holds a special place in my heart and mind. I will forever consider myself spiritually Kalosian, because no matter how many Pokémon games I play I still find myself booting up good ol’ X so that I can give my hometown a visit.

Okay but did you stay up hours wandering the streets of Kalos pretending it was your home? Hm??

Did you weave your way through every single plaza and still get lost ? Wander through alleys just to see which trainers would spawn there?

Did you spend your time trying to get five stars in all the minigames?? Match the color of your poképuffs to the pokémon you were feeding? Visit the shops every day for new clothes? Battle your way through waiters to get Style Points? Talk to the citizens of Kalos, bike circles around Lumiose Tower? Did you hatch eggs for fun before you could even grasp the concept of shiny hunting, you simply hatched and hatched because you liked the pokémon and nothing more? Did you spend all night wondertrading just to see how many people across the world you could connect with, and what interesting pokémon they would give? Did you accidentally stumble across the Lumiose ghost girl prior to knowing she was in the game and nearly cry yourself to sleep that night you were so terrified? Did you cherish the random shinies you’d get through trade, regardless if they were hacked or not? Did you regularly visit Professor Sycamore just because you loved him and wanted to see how he was doing? Did you pummel the Elite Four time and time again not for the money but just to make yourself feel like a real champion and see the victory screen? Did you spend hours wondering who wrote that message on the time tables, waiting for an event that never happened? Did you race another person for a pokémon on the GTS? Did you spend hours making the perfect trainer PR video and constantly jump at the opportunity to show it off to some rando on the PSS? ?

What’s your go to snack?

as of lately it’s been m&ms but it’s usually any kind of chips. i dunno, i’m pretty basic.

What’s a movie you could watch over and over?

honestly there’s lots of movies i could say because i love movies and have many favorites that i have indeed watched over and over again, but the main one would have to be now you see me. the first one or the second one, to be honest. if you know me, you know how much i love those movies. they’re my favorite of all time. and huge comfort movies for me.

Favorite show to binge?

hm, i don’t binge watch shows a whole ton. i think i’d have to say one day at a time. back when it was on netflix, i binged each new season so easily and quickly and rewatch binged a few times. like it’s one of my favorite shows ever and it’s just very binge-able and yeah.

i really only know nintendo when it comes to video games, but super mario galaxy 2 is like my favorite video game ever. but like any mario game in general, honestly. also pokemon, nintendogs, and of course, animal crossing. also in non-nintendo, if sims counts, then sims. even if i don’t have it installed on my current laptop. and also, i haven’t played it ages and this may shock some people, but i actually like call of duty.

um... that’s a good question. it... changes a lot. lately, it’s been anywhere from noon to like two pm. and honestly it can change at any given moment.

i ... have not changed my style or anything at all. so, my go to, every day outfit, is a t-shirt, sweatpants and usually a hoodie.

i woke up, went to the store to buy something for mine and my sister’s friend. then went out with my dad and my sister to get dinner. came home, ate, got a bath, and now here i am.

i don’t think so? besides preparing for easter, i think we may be dyeing eggs? i dunno.

right now, locke and key. my brother just finished it and he and my sister were telling me about it last night and i became intrigued. also, the second to all the boys because i still have not seen that. and i know it’s literally been months but also let it snow because i was reminded last night i still need to watch that.
