I'm usually not into the type of predictable m/f ships that tend to be canon. I think what made me like Eliwood and Ninian though is how accepting and respectful Eliwood is of Ninian? She has that moment where she tells him she's keeping something from him that she feels bad about (being a dragon) and he's just like, it's okay, you don't have to tell me if you don't want to. And there's never any entitlement after protecting her. She says she wants to thank him somehow and he suggests that she dance for him, and then he realizes that might sound uncomfortable and backpedals and it's awkward and adorable. And once he does learn she's a dragon, he still accepts and loves her. He sees how powerful and terrifying this pretty shy girl can actually be and he doesn't hesitate. (And I have some headcanons about monmonagomy and some kinks being seen as normal to dragons, so there would be discussion about that, making them not really a vanilla pair, but that is not in the text at all).

But yeah, that's just my opinion. No one should have to ship them and I get being bored of hero/damsel het.

I feel off because I simply don't ship Elwood x Ninian and don't ship Roy x Lilina. I don't like Byleth x Edelgard (neutral to Claude or Dimitri x Byleth) and prefer they all with other available options that the fanbase pretends that don't exist. Should I be forced to ship them? Can you explain the appeal of those pairings?

You should never be forced to ship anyone. It all comes down to what you want to do and how you want to do it, and anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is wrong.

As for the appeal, I can’t speak for anyone else, but I myself like those ships because I’m kind of a sucker for the typical/expected pairings. Mostly because I do more unorthodox pairings for other characters so a little vanilla is appreciated. I also think some of them are just plain cute on their own.
