Reggae legend NINEY THE OBSERVER performs this Saturday 3/18 at Subterranean, presented by Reggae Fest Chicago. Niney was among the chief architects behind the classic reggae sound of the 1970s and became one of Jamaica's most sought after producers working with Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson, The Heptones, Johnny Clarke, Slim Smith, Jacob Miller, Junior Delgado, and Freddie McGregor. As a singer, he topped the charts in 1970 with "Blood and Fire," which has been featured on every major reggae anthology to this day. The night also includes Simmer Down Sound and Jamaican Oldies DJs spinning stricly vinyl. If that wasn't enough, you can pick up Akasha's brand new "Eye For An Eye" 7-inch vinyl single at the show - released by Jump Up Records. REVIEW Dennis Brown - The Promised Land 1977-79 Label:  Blood & Fire | Format: CD+Dbl  LP-DR | Street date: July 9, 2002 Blood and Fire's release "The Promised Land 1977-79" comprises Dennis Brown's album "Joseph's Coat Of Many Colours" plus extra tracks which also appeared as 45s on Dennis' DEB imprint during 1977-1979. Dennis had started the DEB label in late 1976, in association with Castro Brown, a Jamaican who ran the Morpheus label during 1975-1976 from his shop premises in Croydon, south of London. In addition to material by Dennis, the label also released music by Gregory Isaacs, The Tamlins and Michael Rose with Black Uhuru. The songs presented here is some of the man's best music - ranking alongside his celebrated recordings made with producers Winston 'Niney' Holness and Joe Gibbs - that Dennis ever made.
