The sun burned high in the midday sky, warming the land below it, creating the ideal conditions for children to misbehave under the near cloudless blue sky. Laughter and shouts were carried along the slight breeze as a group of children descended the interconnecting vines of the Hallelujah Mountains, whooping and yelling as they jumped between the colossal vines, soaring through the air and swinging their arms.
Lo'ak and Spider were at the head of the group, committing daring stunts and they launched themselves from vine to vine, sometimes using each other for leverage as they went. Trailing behind the were Kiri and Tuk going at a more sedated pace, though Tuk would sometimes disregard Kiri's warnings of not going too fast and mimic Lo'ak as she jumped between the vines. There had been more than enough close calls that Kiri had sent Tuk to the back of the group with Niri'te, who was carefully making her way down.
Tuk had whined and stomped her feet, but Kiri wasn't having it, so after the almost-tantrum Tuk had waited for Niri'te to catch up so the two could climb down together.
"Ah, c'mon little sister, it isn't so bad," Niri'te tried to placate the girl, but all she got was a petulant huff, Tuk crossed her arms and jumped down to the next vine. Niri'te sighed, it doesn't seem like Tuk would be in a pleasant mood for the next few hours, lest something catches her eye and she forgets that she was ever mad. Nirir'te admired Tuk of that, having the simple pleasure of forgetting your all troubles to focus on the small things.
Originally Niri'te had thought she would spend the day with her grandmother, learning and completing tasks for the aging woman. She was busy doing just that when Spider had come up to her, looking nervous as he wrung his hands together. Niri'te put down the stone grinder to look at him, showing him that she was listening. "Hey Ri'te," he started, looking over her shoulder as he avoided her eyes. "D'you know what's up with Lo'ak? He's been kinda distant lately..."
Niri'te sighed and looked down at her unfinished work. "He got in trouble again, he and Tuk went out without permission and they got attacked," She looked back at the human boy, noticing his skin paling slightly out of worry for his best friend. "I didn't get the full story, Lo'ak's been avoiding a lot of people lately."
Spider nodded, looking over her shoulder again. She wondered what was so interesting that he could keep eye contact while he was having a conversation with her. Spider bit his lip, looking as of his mind was elsewhere. Niri'te decided that she wasn't going to wait for him to continue the conversation and picked the stone grinder back up again and went on with her work.
After a moment of awkward silence between the two, Spider finally spoke again.
"So I was thinking that maybe we could all go out today, like just go down to the jungle and mess around for a few hours, maybe we could get Lo'ak outta the dump he's in."
Niri'te glanced up at him out of the corner of her eye. "What do you mean by 'we all'?"
"Y'know like... me, you, Lo'ak and Kiri. Maybe Tuk as well."
At first, Niri'te was warming up to the idea of going down to the jungle to unwind a bit, but when he mentioned Kiri, that idea had curled up and died.
"Sorry dude," she sighed as if she cared, "No can do, I'm busy today."
"Aw what? C'mon Ri'te, you gotta come with, you've been holed up in this rock for too long! It's affecting your brain, turning you into a buzzkill."
Niri'te scoffed. "You remember the last time me or any of my family went down to the jungle?"
Niri'te had nearly killed herself, Lo'ak and Tuk were attacked and Tuk had refused to leave their mother's side for days after, always with her or Lo'ak, much to the dismay of their father.
"You can't let a few bad things get to you like that. If you do, you would never go outside." Spider reasoned with her. And she couldn't really argue with his logic.
Niri'te sighed and finally looked at him, her yellow eyes narrowed as she debated his words. After a moment of the two staring at each other, Niri'te spoke.
"Okay fine, but if I say I wanna leave none of you can stop me, got it?"
"Yes ma'am," Spider mock saluted her. Niri'te hissed playfully and swiped at him, the human boy barely dodging the surprise attack. "Don't call me that dude, you're older than me."
Spider shrugged. "But you're more mature so that basically makes you an adult compare to me."
Niri'te rolled her eyes, a smile playing on her lips as she looked back at her work. "Fine dude, whatever you say."
Spider grinned, calling over his shoulder as he turned to walk away. "We're leaving around noon, so get whatever you can done by then!" To which Niri'te gave him a thumbs up as the human boy jogged away, probably off to go find Kiri or something.
"Guys!" Tuk whined. She had started to fall behind the older kids, her attention too easily caught by the surrounding flora. "Wait up!"
Niri'te was shaken from her thoughts as she stopped walking, turning back to wait for her little sister to catch up. She laughed softly as Tuk jumped up and skipped over, suddenly not bothered by being left behind. She could be so strange at times.
"Come on, tsmuke, or they'll actually leave us behind." Niri'te joked as she let Tuk go in front of her, smiling as she watched the little girl basically frolicked between all the plants.
They had been on the ground for about a few hours now, though the two boys had been adamant about keeping off the ground, especially Lo'ak, who kept glancing back at Tuk as if to reassure himself that she was still there and safe. Niri'te understood that need, the action that almost became instinct after someone you loved was put in danger. She did the same thing to Lo'ak, though she found herself doing it less and less as time went on and the gash on Lo'ak's leg healed, becoming a pale scar on his calf that stood out against his dark blue skin, a constant reminder of the time where Niri'te had failed her baby brother, had let him get hurt.
Niri'te shook herself from those thoughts, knowing that she couldn't change the past, no matter how much she wanted to.
She was bringing up the rear of the group, walking at a sedated pace on the moss-covered ground with Tuk, the young girl reluctant to go into the trees, her hand absently coming up to touch the healing injuries on the side of her face, though she tried to play it off as the bandage itching, and Niri'te knew that feeling all too well.
"C'mon Niri'te! Hurry up, we're losing daylight."
Kiri had been complaining about Niri'te for the past hour or so, always about her falling behind and slowing them down. Niri'te didn't pay it much mind, unfortunately, used to such things with her twin sister. She would always apologise to Kiri about whatever she complained about, the action seemingly infuriating her sister more. It was something Niri'te took a small pleasure in, proud of herself for not stooping down to Kiri's level, with all the childish insults and harsh words spoken to like she wasn't supposed to hear, but she did. Niri'te always did.
"Sorry, I got distracted." Niri'te placated, holding her hands up a mock of meek defensiveness, playing the role of the weak pushover like she always did with Kiri.
Kiri scoffed and walked away, wanting to put some distance between the two of them, but before she could get far Niri'te brushed past her. "Because we all know what happens when I fall behind, right Kiri?" she said to her, voice hushed so the others wouldn't hear. As she walked away, Niri'te glanced behind her to see Kiri standing there, frozen in what she believed to be shock. Niri'te smiled sweetly at her sister and skipped away, coming up behind Tuk, and giving the little girl a tiny shove that sent her to the ground where she was crouched in front of some plant, its tendril-like stems reaching out and attaching themselves to Tuk's fingers.
Niri'te turned back to Kiri, wanting to see if her twin had gotten the hidden meaning behind that little interaction. She did. Niri'te knows she did because of her paling face, the glare aimed at her, and the way Kiri's stride faltered for the smallest moment.
"C'mon Kiri! Hurry up, we're losing daylight." She parroted her sister's words back to her as she walked away, taking great delight at the disgruntled look she got from Kiri.
“Ease off you two!” Lo’ak called from the front of the group, sick of listening to Kiri complain and because of it not in the mood for another fight to break out between the two sisters.
Lo'ak's voice cut through the tension, his tone firm yet laced with weariness. Niri'te glanced at him and saw the frustration etched on his face. She knew he was tired of the constant bickering between her and Kiri, and she couldn't blame him. Lo'ak always tries to be the mediator, the one who tried to keep the peace among their group, but somethings things just didn't work out.
Kiri snorted, her eyes fixed on Niri'te as if to say, "See? Even Lo'ak is tired of you." It was a mocking expression, one that Niri'te had grown accustomed to. Kiri seemed to take every opportunity to belittle her, to remind her that she was different, an outsider in their tight-knit group.
Niri'te met Kiri's gaze head-on, her own eyes narrowing in defiance. She refused to let her sister's words get to her. Instead, she walked up ahead, catching up with Spider who was waiting for her. The two of them fell into step together, leaving Kiri behind.
As they continued their trek through the jungle, the air thick with humidity and the sounds of the wildlife surrounding them, Niri'te felt a sense of calm wash over her. She enjoyed the solitude of being away from Kiri's constant scrutiny. Spider's presence was comforting, his easygoing nature a welcome contrast to the tension that had been building within the group.
Niri'te had lost sight of Kiri after that, her sister most likely slipping away to go galivanting through the jungle like some sort of hippie. Or at least that's what her father says whenever Kiri goes off on her own. She had always wondered if it was an insult, or something with a negative meaning to it, some childish part of her just wanting to throw petty insults at Kiri like her sister does to her. Even after pestering her father for ages about the meaning of the word, Jakesully had remained very tight-lipped about it for some reason, and Niri'te doesn't know why.
She heard Tuk gasp, quickly turning to her to see the little girl gaping upwards, eyes glued to the derelict remains of a Sky People aircraft, an Aerospatiale SA-2 Samson, one of the same ones that some of the human scientists would use during high stake raids. The Samson was entangled in vines as it hung prone above the forest floor. Niri'te came to stand next to her, staring up at the craft with the same kind of reverence.
It was surreal in a way, Niri'te had seen aircraft just like this just weeks ago in action, raining down missiles and bullets as they attacked her people. And now, seeing one of those very same aircraft that looked like it had been hanging there for longer than she was alive, covered in rust and dents, with vines wrapped around it as the craft decayed.
"Is there any dead bodies up there?" Tuk called up to Lo'ak and Spider, the two boys already making their way up the vines and going into the craft itself. Spider's head popped out on the other side of the craft and informed Tuk that no, there weren't any dead bodies, which Niri'te was secretly glad about.
After some time of waiting for the boys to finish goofing off inside the Samson, Tuk had decided that she wanted to see what was so cool about it that Lo'ak and Spider had spent nearly 30 minutes inside it. Niri'te reluctantly followed, not wanting to be left standing down there alone like some idiot.
The inside was very underwhelming. Most of the floor was missing, leaving sizable holes with sharp and rusted edges, which she had warned the others about, having heard one of the human scientists talking about this thing called tetanus that's caused by being cut with something rusty, or something like that. Lo'ak wasn't listening to her, she was sure of it when she heard him make explosion noises with his mouth as he sat in the empty pilot's chair, twisting the control leaver this way and that as he shot imaginary enemy ships from the sky. And she knew that Spider wasn't listening as well when she saw him stand behind the absurdly large machine gun on the other side of the craft, making similar noise to Lo'ak as he aimed it at the equally imaginary enemies.
Niri'te rolled her eyes at the two, trying not to smile at the way Lo'ak was starting to loosen up. He had been so tense when they left, his temper shorter and he was more closed off than normal. But now he was acting like his goofy, and at times immature self again. And Niri'te wouldn't have him any way else.
Though after another 10 minutes of the boys being themselves and Tuk complaining about not getting a turn with the machine gun or sitting in the pilot's chair, so Niri'te didn't want to take any chances of Tuk throwing one of her signature tantrums and firmly suggested that they moved one, saying that she doesn't want to spend all of their limited time inside the literal death trap that was the Samson.
"Okay you two," Niri'te said to the boys, hopefully catching their attention as she led Tuk back down. "I think it's time for us to go, the sun isn't going to stay out for much longer."
Spider turned around, his expression pleading. "Aw c'mon Ri'te, we just started!"
"Yeah Ri'te, we can't just leave now!"
Niri'te said nothing, just giving the two boys a look and crossing her arms.
"Just five more minutes, please Ri'te!" Lo'ak said, turning around in his seat.
"Yeah five more minutes!"
Niri'te gave an exasperated sigh, throwing her head back as she looked down to where Tuk was waiting for them. In that moment, she truly felt like a tired mother trying to get her two unruly boys to comply and go to bed. Eywa, she wishes her future children won't act like this
"No," she said, giving them a stern look. "We've been in her long enough and Kiri hasn't come back from wherever she wandered off to, so we have to go and find her before it gets dark."
She held Lo'ak's stare, her lips pressed in a thin line. When his stare didn't let up she turned to Spider, giving him the exact same look, though this time popping her hip to the side and putting her hands on her hip as well. Spider's eyes widened slightly, mouth gaping as he stared back. It didn't take long for him to break away and give Lo'ak an apologetic look.
Lo'ak rolled his eyes and stood, huffing like a small child as he climbed down. "Softy," he told Spider as he passed the human boy.
Spider flushed pink and sped after him, jumping on Lo'ak's back to put him in a mock choke hold.
Tuk led the way as they looked for Kiri. Though she didn't stay in the lead as she got distracted by some fan lizards, giggling when the little creatures glided away from her. Spider then took the lead, his head on a swivel as he looked for Kiri. It was clear to anyone with eyes that Spider was very fond of Kiri, Niri'te was sure of it, though she didn't know if the same could be said for Kiri. It would make sense if Kiri liked him back from the amount of time they spent together when Spider wasn't goofing off with Lo'ak or in the labs with the other humans.
"Kiri!" Spider called out, climbing onto a root protruding from the group.
"Kiri!" Tuk mimicked, jumping up to look over the bushes.
Spider called out again, not noticing the way Lo'ak had tensed, his fists clenching at his sides as he looked around them in a panic. They were being too loud, something could hear them.
Lo'ak became uncomfortably aware of the grazed bullet wounds on his back, the little cuts that littered his arms and legs, and the sting of the palms of his hands. His eyes fell on Tuk, the action outside of his control as he edged closer to her, wanting to be close enough to her to pull her away just in case something happens. He gets the feeling that it might be more true than he would like.
Niri'te could see all of this, her worry for Kiri increasing as they kept walking.
Suddenly Spider darted off, Niri'te instinctively reached out to catch him but the human boy was too fast as he disappeared into the brush.
"Spider! Get back here!" She exclaimed, taking a few steps to where he had disappeared.
Great, now they had to look for both Spider and Kiri, what a great way to spend the last hour or so of their little adventure. Hopefully, the two would find each other so the rest of them don't have to turn the whole jungle upside down just to find them.
"Spider, bro, come back!" Lo'ak tried, one hand cupping his mouth while the other held Tuk's arm.
Suddenly there was a noise, the bushes to their left rustling, right where Spider had run off to. They all tensed, Lo'ak pulling Tuk behind him as Niri'te stepped back.
In a quiet, suspenseful moment, the bushes rustled again. Tuk whimpered and stood closer to Lo'ak.
She could hear footsteps. More than one pair. Getting closer, and closer and closer, closer closer closer.
Without her knowing, Niri'te's hand had reached for her dagger, gripping it tightly as she held it in front of her, the noise draws nearer, Niri'te's heart was pounding in her chest, she could feel it pulsing all throughout her tense body, whatever it was just a few meters away, if not closer. She swallowed thickly, edging further away. A hand appeared, blue with five fingers, Lo'ak thought when he saw it. It pushed the branches away slowly, hesitant. Lo'ak pushed Tuk completely behind him, hiding her as she clutched at his arm tightly, pressing close to his back, Ri'te was next to him, her dagger high and her keen eyes trained on the bushes. Right when the hand, blue with five fingers, had pushed the branches, Niri'te pounced. She wasn't going to let whoever it was hurt Lo'ak, hurt Tuk. She just wasn't.
She launched herself at whoever it was, knocking them both to the ground as she pressed her dagger to their throat. She hissed in their face, baring her teeth menacingly.
"Get off me!"
Niri'te was thrown to the side, landing harshly before she was on her feet again, crouched low, tail swishing behind her.
Kiri was on the ground, leaning up on her elbows as she glared daggers at Niri'te, baring her teeth as her ears pressed tightly against her head. She pushed herself off the ground, Niri'te doing the same as she sheathed her dagger, shame and embarrassment flooding her. Niri'te kept her eyes on the ground as Kiri stood, her glare unwavering, an almost unheard rumble of anger in her chest.
"Spider, you kurkung! You scared the shit outta us!" Lo'ak barked, slumping his shoulders as he stepped up to his friend.
Spider winced, curling into himself slightly as Lo'ak smacked him up the head. "Sorry, sorry! I thought I saw Kiri and I just..."
"Just what? Ran off into the jungle without even warning us? Come on dude, that was just foul."
"I said I was sorry! And look! I found Kiri!"
Unbeknownst to the two bickering boys, the twins were caught in a stalemate. Kiri had yet to lower her glaring and Niri'te was just wishing the ground would open up and swallow her whole. Kiri stalked towards her sister, intent on getting back at Niri'te for tackling her, but before she could even take a single step, Tuk jumped in front of her.
"You're back! You're back!" Tuk exclaimed, hugging Kiri tightly. She can admit that it was a little over the top, but Tuk needed a way to draw Kiri away from her anger, not wanting to find out what she was going to do to Ri'te if she hadn't stepped in.
Kiri looked down at her, surprised at her sudden appearance. Tuk grinned up at her, pleased with herself for successfully diffusing a most likely bad fight between the twins.
"Oh, hey Tuk," Kiri said awkwardly, her hand coming up to pat Tuk's head.
Tuk smiled in response and detached herself, skipping over to where Lo'ak and Spider were still bickering.
"Where did you even find her bro? We literally looked everywhere."
"You did not look everywhere, you were just walking in a straight line just hoping you'l just happen upon Kiri wherever she was!"
"We were not walking in a straight line! It was a strategical search pattern."
A beat of silence.
"Strategical search pattern!? Is that what they call fucking off in a random direction now?"
Lo'ak sputtered, his eyes wide as he thought of a comeback.
When Lo'ak didn't answer, Spider gave him a smug look, crossing his arms in a smug way. Like the smug smugger he was.
Lo'ak then punched his shoulder, "Smartass." he muttered. Spider grinned.
"Okay, cut it out you two, we have to get back soon, it's almost eclipse." Niri'te called as she shook out her hands nervously, avoiding eye contact with Kiri as she held her hand out for Tuk, who came bounding over.
Lo'ak rolled his eyes, giving Spider one last shove before he walked off, followed by the rest of the group as they made their way back to the mountains.
Niri'te was at the back of the group, as far away from Kiri as she could be without separating. At the back of the group, Niri'te felt that she could have a better perspective of them, keeping Tuk close to her if anything were to happen. And with their luck, something almost always did happen, it was something that Niri'te loathed with almost her entire being.
Lo'ak stopped, crouching down as he inspected something on the ground. Spider came up behind him to peer over his shoulder, a confused noise leaving him.
"What is it now?" Kiri asked, rolling her eyes as she huffed in a way only she could. Lo'ak waved her off as he moved to the side, keeping his eyes on whatever it was that caught his attention.
Niri'te walked up to the two boys, Tuk trailing after her. "Come on you two, we're supposed to be back by now," she said, casting her eyes up at the slowly disappearing sun worriedly. She didn't want to get in trouble again, not so soon after everything.
"Ri'te's right man," Spider reasoned, his hand on Lo'ak's shoulder as he tried to get the other boy to stand up. "Come on dude."
She looked over Lo'ak's shoulder. finally seeing what it was that had caught his attention. It was a footprint, a shoed footprint, something she hasn't seen in ages. She glanced at Lo'ak, wondering what must be going through his mind.
"It's way too big to be human," Lo'ak commented, his voice distant as he stood, eyes still trained on the print. He turned in the direction of the prints' path, looking for more.
"Avatars?" Spider asked, not noticing the way Lo'ak tensed, Tuk's hand came up to her bandaged face, and the little girl clutched Niri'te's hand.
"Maybe," Lo'ak mumbled. "They're for sure not one of ours." Lo'ak began to follow the prints, deeper into the jungle with Spider following after him.
"Lo'ak!" Niri'te hissed. "Lo'ak stop, we have to get back to camp, we don't have the time to do this." She pleaded, her hand starting to hurt from how tightly Tuk was holding it. She was worried and scared, Niri'te knew, Tuk wanted to go home.
"What are you doing?" Kiri asked, annoyed.
"Shh... I'm tracking," Lo'ak answered thoughtfully, stalking off into the growing darkness.
What is he thinking? Niri'te asked herself, reluctantly following after the two boys.
Her breath hitched when she saw where the tracks led them.
The old shack had been taken over by the elements, its walls encased with spindling vines, dented and rusted with time gone by. The broken window showed the shadowy interior of the shack, ransacked and barren, But it was what was outside the shack that made her blood run cold.
There were almost a dozen camo-clad Avatars milling in front of the shack, their massive guns held loosely in their five-fingered hands. Tuk whimpered beside her, pressing close to her side as the little girl tried to hide away.
Cold realisation washed over her, looking between Lo'ak and Tuk, the fear shown plainly on Lo'ak's face as he paled at the sight of the Avatars.
They were attacked by the Avatars, there was no other way to explain it.
"We're so screwed," Niri'te whispered from where they were crouched behind some bushes for cover.
Lo'ak sent her a withering glare that looked eerily similar to their mother, a chill went up her spine. "Shut up, Ri'te."
She rolled her eyes at him, despite the way she felt as if he was looking through her, his green eyes distant and dull, yet they were shining with fear. Niri'te faked a scoff and turned her head back to the Avatars. The group had been huddled around an old mech suit, the one who could only be the leader stood the closest, his eyes not leaving the suit. "This is your fault though; you shouldn't have followed those tracks." She grumbled.
Kiri looked towards Niri'te with a glance of agreement, surprising Niri'te thoroughly. Lo'ak scoffed but ignored them, keeping his eyes trained on the Avatars.
"Dad's going to ground you," Kiri whispered and Lo'ak rolled his eyes. "Stop," Kiri eyed him amusedly at his aggravation, not seeing how his hands shook. "For life." She continued to tease. "Kiri, stop." He said a bit louder.
"Shh, what if they hear us because your loud ass doesn't shut up..." Niri'te hissed and Lo'ak quietly mocked her. Spider and Lo'ak began to whisper about the battlefield, and Niri'te just rolled her eyes.
"I gotta call this in," Lo'ak suggested and Spider's eyes widened. "No don't, we're gonna get in so much trouble." Spider whispered and he wasn't wrong, especially with what happened with Lo'ak during the raid all those days ago. It felt like it's been a lifetime since that day.
"Listen, let's just go. Tuk shouldn't be here anyways." Niri'te whispered, rubbing Tuk's arm who looked up at her sister, eyes wide with worry.
Lo'ak considered this and nodded his head once. "Let's go." They turned around and began to move further back into the forest as quietly as they could. Lo'ak began to inform their father as Niri'te and Kiri put in their earpieces. They stopped and huddled down while Lo'ak talked with their father.
"What's your provenance?" Jakesully asked and Lo'ak and Spider glanced at each other while Niri'te rubbed Tuk's shoulder. Tuk was shaking badly, her breaths coming out in panicked puffs that heated the skin of Niri'te's neck where the little girl had her face pressed into since she saw the Avatars.
"Uhh, we're at the old shack," Lo'ak said, glancing at Spider who shook his head.
"Who's we?" Jakesully asked and Lo'ak hesitantly spoke everyone's names. Jakesully began to give instructions and soon they were heading out of the area in a hurry.
"We're going to be in so much trouble." Kiri hissed at Lo'ak and Tuk who was in front turned around. "It's almost eclipse come on!" When she turned back around one of the Avatars from before launched out and grabbed Tuk.
She let out a scream and almost immediately they grabbed their weapons and started hissing at them. In a few seconds, they were surrounded by the whole squad. Niri'te began to drop her weapons as the Avatars screamed at them to do so.
A soldier came around, grabbing Niri'te roughly and pulling her tswin. She let out a yell and hissed at the one pulling her braid. It only made him pull harder and he kicked the back of her knees bringing her down to the ground.
The leader's voice cut through the tense silence, his words dripping with condescension. "Well, aren't you a sight," he remarked, his gaze fixed on Niri'te. "Didn't know they came in this colour." He chuckled, a cruel jest at the expense of the other Avatars.
The sound of Kiri's snort broke the tension, and Niri'te turned to look at her sister. Kiri's face spoke volumes, a silent confirmation of her disdain for Niri'te. It hurt, even if Niri'te tried not to let it show. Kiri's betrayal stung, a reminder that even among the outcasts, she was still an outcast. But Niri'te held her ground, meeting Kiri's gaze with defiance. She refused to let Kiri's hurtful words and actions define her worth. She had come to accept herself, flaws and all, and no amount of taunting would change that.
The one holding down Kiri grabbed her hands and almost looked happy to see that she had five fingers. "Colonel, five fingers. We got ourselves a half-breed." Hearing them speak English sounded so foreign to Niri'te, only ever hearing it when her father and Norm were talking, or when Kiri was listening to one of Grace's video logs. But this time it sounded much harsher, when the Avatars spoke, cruel in the way it would be pleasant and calming when it came from someone she knew.
He glanced at Kiri and her fingers before moving to Lo'ak, demanding him to show his fingers. Lo'ak being Lo'ak showed them but decided to flip him off while doing so.
The colonel gave Lo'ak a calculating gaze. "Well, hello again." He gave a predatory grin. "Didn't think we'd see you again, little watcher."
Lo'ak paled at the words, understanding enough to know what the man was saying. He glanced at Tuk, his heart breaking at her terrified face, her hands gripping onto the woman holding her in place. Her bandage had come loose during the scuffle, now peeling off her face, revealing her healing injuries.
The man chuckled. "You're his, aren't you?" Lo'ak responded with a weak hiss but that only seemed to confirm this man's question. "You're his alright."
He grabbed Lo'ak's braid, pulling him up to his feet as Lo'ak cried out in pain. "Where is he?"
At first, he didn't answer but the colonel pulled his braid again. "Ngaytxoa 'ìnglìsì...ne vonvä."
The colonel tugged again. "Peseng ngeya sempul?" He tugged harder this time, making Lo'ak scream. He held his ground though, hissing at the man.
"Really you wanna play it this way?" The colonel took out his knife, leaning it towards Lo'ak's neck.
"Ftang!" Niri'te shouted, Kiri, crying out as well. The colonel stopped, throwing Lo'ak down. He turned walking towards Kiri. "Kehe!" She shouted pulling against the man's grip.
"Kehe, no, stop!" Lo'ak shouted in English as he miserably failed to get up and intervene only to be held by his braid once more. "Stop! Don't touch her!" Spider shouted, trying to pull from his captor's grip. The colonel stopped in front of Spider as if he knew him. "Please don't hurt her please." Lo'ak pleaded behind him.
The colonel's attention shifted to Spider, his eyes narrowing in recognition. "And what's your name, kid?" he inquired as he crouched in front of the human boy, his voice laced with careful hesitation and bewilderment.
Spider stared back at the man, his gaze unwavering. For a moment, he seemed lost in thought, grappling with something deep within him. The silence stretched on until finally, Spider's answer came, sharp and defiant. "Spider," he replied, his voice devoid of any familial connection.
The colonel seemed taken aback by the response, a flicker of recognition and realisation crossing his face. "Miles?" he uttered, hesitantly and bewildered. Spider's response was a venomous glare and a hiss, prompting the Avatar holding him to yank on his hair in retaliation.
A tense silence enveloped the group as Quaritch studied Spider intently. Niri'te held her breath, wondering what was going through Quaritch's mind. The revelation hung heavy in the air, a secret exposed.
Quaritch's nonchalant demeanour shifted slightly as he continued to observe Spider. "You are, aren't you?" Quaritch muttered, his voice tinged with surprise. "You've got your mother's eyes, you know, bright and fierce." His distant gaze hinted at memories long suppressed. Spider remained silent, his glare unwavering, unaffected by the curious gazes of the Avatars.
"What are you even doing here, Miles?" Quaritch inquired, his tone tinged with a mix of curiosity and disbelief. Spider's response was cold and assertive, "Nobody calls me that." Quaritch's eyes widened, realizing the truth. "Well, I'll be damned. It is you, ain't it. I thought they sent you back to Earth," he mused aloud. Spider, somewhat proud of himself, smirked inwardly at his father's confusion. "You can't put babies in cryo, dipshit," he retorted, relishing the opportunity to challenge his father's assumptions.
Finally, the colonel stood up. "What are we doin', boss?" The one holding Spider asked as Quaritch clicked his communicator on. "Iron sky, Blue One, Actual."
Niri'te's eyes widened. This was Spider's father? But how? Spider's dad is supposed to be human... How can this Avatar be the Colonel Miles Quaritch? The colonel is supposed to be dead, his decomposing body was in the mech suit outside the shack. There was no way for the man to be standing here, alive and blue, of all things. Niri'te's head was spinning with all the possibilities.
"Blue One, Iron Sky, send your traffic," came the faint voice from the comm.
"We're standing by for extract, over." he responded. After a moment he spoke again. "Be advised, we are bringing in high value prisoners, over." They began to be moved by the Avatars and Kiri tugged and pulled. "Let us go!" The one holding her yanked her back. "Shut up."
They were moved and forced to sit down, tugging and barking 'shut up' when any of them spoke. As Niri'te struggled against her captor, a video of what sounded like Jakesully and the colonel played.
As the sky began to turn into Eclipse, they gathered the Sully children in a line. Waiting for something, Niri'te didn't know what would come first, their father, or the Sky People that were going to take her and her siblings as prisoners. It began to rain as they waited, listening intently for any signs of their mother or father.
Then she heard her mother's calls, ears perking up she waited for her time to move. Kiri mumbled comforts of her own under her breath, the soldier holding her eventually got tired of it. Yanking her head down he aggressively told her to shut up.
An arrow hit his head only a few seconds after. As they started shooting Niri'te took her chance. Moving her hands upwards she grabbed her captor's arm, biting into it enough to draw blood. He screamed and let go.
"Why don't you come out Mrs Sully?" Quaritch called out from his cover, staring at the yellow and green fletching, immediately knowing who it belonged to. "You and I, we've got some unfinished business." He was taunting her, knew that damn well, but he just couldn't resist.
"Demon!" Neytiri answered, hidden in the trees, her voice sent a chill down his spine. "I will kill you as many times as I have to!"
"I guess you and the corporal have been pretty busy haven't you?" His voice echoed through the forest. "You got yourself a whole litter of 'em, little half-breed tykes!"
Neytiri screamed in rage at the way the colonel talked about her children, she readied an arrow, breathing deeply to calm herself as she took aim. Leaning just past the cover of the tree, Neytiri levelled the arrow at Quaritch's head, all her focus set on killing him for the last time. Unaware she was at the Avatar pointing their AR at her, aiming for her head. But before he could take the shot, an arrow pierced his chest, the tip glistening with his blood as the soldier fell to the ground, dead.
Neteyam breathed heavily as he watched the man fall, his hands shaking as he watched the man take his last shuddering breath. He just killed someone.
Neytiri took one last deep breath, her grip tightening on her bow, her finger twitching. She let the arrow loose, it whistling through the air as it soared toward Quaritch. The arrow embedded itself in his shoulder, the colonel grunting in pain, his hand coming up to break the arrow in half, pressing hard on his shoulder to try and stop the bleeding. Like the coward he was, he retreated to the cover of the underbrush.
In the midst of the chaos, Niri'te's focus shifted to Spider, needing to find him, not knowing if Quaritch and his team wanted to take him or not. She grabbed his arm leading him away as they ran, trusting that Lo'ak would look out for Tuk, having been the closest to her when they were captured.
The two ran along a narrow branch, Kiri only steps behind them, looking back as she watched the Avatars shoot into the jungle without aim. She pushed ahead, willing herself to be closer to Spider and Niri'te as they ran, but the branch was becoming too narrow and thin, unable to hold all three of them. When they had reached a junction, Niri'te pushed Spider ahead, then allowed Kiri to skirt past her, but in doing so, Kiri pushed Niri'te off the branch.
Niri'te had only just caught herself, her bound hands clutching at whatever she could.
Spider turned abruptly, eyes locking on to where Ri'te was hanging, her legs swinging as she tried to pull herself up. He had to help her, he thought, running back to where Kiri was just watching her sister struggle. Something ill and strange swirled in his chest when he saw Kiri doing nothing to help. He pushed her aside, rougher than what was necessary, his bound hands holding onto Ri'te, grunting as he tried to pull her up.
"Go, Kiri! You gotta get outta here!" He called over his shoulder, feet shifting as he managed to pull Ri'te up halfway. But then something happened, Spider was struck, his back burning as his world shifted as he fell, plummeting down to the forest floor. Though Niri'te fell with him, the momentum of his body pulled her down with him. But she reached out to grab him as his grip loosened. The two of them hung there for a moment, the only thing holding them was Niri'te's perilous hold on the branch.
Niri'te's grip slipped, unable to maintain her hold on Spider. Desperation etched on her face, she attempted to reach out to Kiri, but Neytiri intervened, pulling her sister away to safety. In that chaotic moment, Neytiri didn't realize that Ri'te had fallen alongside Spider. The truth of Ri'te's whereabouts was unknown to her.
At the bottom of the embankment, Spider and Niri'te lay battered and bruised. Spider struggled to remain conscious, his body weakened by the fall. Niri'te was in a similar state, her breathing shallow and laboured, small cuts and scrapes littering her body.
In this vulnerable state, Quaritch and his team discovered them. His eyes gleamed with a twisted sense of triumph as he approached the injured children. Without hesitation, Quaritch scooped up Spider, ordering one of his subordinates to retrieve Niri'te. However, before the order could be executed, an arrow found its mark, embedding itself in the Avatar's skull, the body slumping forward, falling onto Niri'te's semi-conscious form.
Realizing the danger, Quaritch and the remaining Avatars withdrew, taking Spider with them and leaving Niri'te behind.
Once the threat was gone, Neytiri came rushing, crouching down next to her fallen daughter, shoving the body off her prone form. Somehow during this, the Avatar's tactical knife had come loose, cutting Niri'te on her neck, dangerously close to the delicate flesh of her throat.
Neytiri gasped in alarm when she saw the blood, her hand pressing down to stop the flow, calling for her mate.
"Ri'te!" Jakesully called out when he saw the two. He ran over, reaching his arms out as Neytiri passed Niri'te to her mate, his hand coming to replace hers on their daughter's neck. "They got her," Neytiri said, glaring at the body of the Avatar, at the bloody knife now laying on the forest floor.
"It's alright, we got her now," He said, standing, Niri'te in his arms. He called for his ikran, climbing onto the beast's back once it landed. "Come, Neytiri, we have to get back to camp."

Niri'te knelt next to Kiri who was listening next to their hut, Tuk had her head down peaking inside. Her wound had been stitched up and bandaged and her grandmother finally let her go after an hour of monitoring her. Niri'te was a bit paler than usual from some blood loss, Mo'at recommended taking it easy. Lo'ak and Neteyam had stayed next to her the entire time, taking peaks at her wound and either making teasing comments or talking about a cool scar forming. They had tried to do this at first, but after Niri'te had lost consciousness due to blood loss, Mo'at had quickly chased them out.
"What's going on?" Neteyam asked as the brothers came and squatted where the rest were. Kiri immediately silenced them, and they began to listen to their parents' conversation.
"I cannot, you cannot ask this." Neytiri stated, pacing the length of the marui. "I cannot leave my people." She set something down. "I will not." She defied.
"He's hunting us." Jakesully replied, and Niri'te's ears pressed against her head as she listened. "He's targeting our family." He sounded so tired, and it made her feel bad for making him worry today. "You cannot ask this!" Neytiri yelled at him. "The children, everything they have ever known, the forest. This is our home!" She screamed at him.
"He had our children. He had them under his knife." A small silence passed. "We got lucky, if Ri'te's neck was cut any higher, she could've died!" he huffed, and a tense silence broke out between them. Niri'te stared straight ahead but she could feel the glances from her siblings.
Neytiri sighed, and a few seconds later they could hear her pick up something. "My father gave me this bow, as he lay dying! And he said, 'protect the people.'" She said a bit more quietly, sorrow consuming her voice. "You are Toruk Makto!"
"This will protect the people!" His voice was sounding more agitated the more he had to explain. "Quaritch has Spider, that kid knows everything!"
Niri'te glanced at her siblings, all of them sharing a look before going back to listening. "He knows our whole operation! He could lead them right in here!"
"If the people harbour us, they will die." Niri'te knitted her eyebrows together, hating that her father was telling the truth. "Do you understand?"
Another silence fell and Niri'te could hear her mothers' huffs of emotion, distraught by the thought of leaving her people behind. "Look I got nothing, I got no plan." Jakesully admitted. "But protecting this family, that I can do."
Neytiri growled. "But running away will not solve anything! We have to stand and fight! We are not cowards! We are warriors and we will protect our family, our home."
"Neytiri—" Their father started.
"No! I will not run away. I will fight!"
"Babe, please—"
"No, you cannot ask this, you cannot!"
Listening to their parents back and forth tore a whole in Niri'te's heart, she hated that it had come to this, with her father thinking the only way they'll ever be safe was to run away, and her mother wanting to stay and fight, like the warrior she was raised to be.
"You cannot ask this..." Neytiri said softly, her voice pleading.
Jakesully sighed. "I know."
Neytiri sobbed, her hand coming up to keep quiet, not wanting her children to hear her cry like this.
Niri'te knew what this meant, this meant they were leaving their home. Neteyam rubbed her shoulder in comfort, and she grabbed his hand in silent thanks.
"But I know one thing." Jakesully paused. "Wherever we go, this family is our fortress." Nri'te looked at her siblings and they all snuck away quietly to go to a spot and talk about what they just heard.
Later that night the parents brought their children into the marui to tell them the news they were already expecting. They were leaving their home, to go far away, to protect their people and their family. Niri'te was upset, beyond upset really, and she knew everyone else was too
She didn't get much sleep that night, thinking about how she will most likely never get to see her friends or call the Omatikaya Clan her people ever again.

Ninat Slander
You know what I think to be funny? We all use Ninat in memes and stuff like "She's trying to steal Neytiri's man". In a joking way ofc.
But in the movie it's actually not Ninat's name that makes Neytiri turn.
Neytiri: "And you may choose a woman. We have many good women. Ninat is the best singer."
Jake: "But I don't want Ninat."
Neytiri: *smiles* "Peyral is a good hunter."
Jake: "Yes, she is a good hunter."
Neytiri: *side eye*
Tumblr media
But we all just roll with Ninat😂
I guess the name Peyral just wasn't memorizable enough.✨

It's been a few days since Kiri's seizure, she was doing great with her recovery. She was sadden by the fact that she can never connect herself to the Metkayina's Spirit tree. Everyone was glad that she was okay and well. That morning you were helping your mother roll up the sleeping mat, then everyone heard the horn get blown. That was weird, then Tuk had been the first one to step out, followed by Jake and Neteyam, then you followed along with Ninat. You saw how the na'vi would jump out of their homes onto the water, some even made flips and such.
Then you all heard Tsireya from the distance. "The Tulkun have returned! Everybody! Our brothers and sisters have returned!" from the distance you saw how a group of Tulkun had been jumping out of the water to make themselves known. You also saw some na'vi some what chase them on their skimswims. Tuk went back inside to get Kiri, who wasn't really in the mood for anything but Tuk manage to get her sister to come out and see the Tulkun. Without thinking twice you, Kiri and Tuk decided to go see the Tulkun.
Rotxo had introduced you all to his spirit brother, you were taken on a ride on the tulkun's fin. You and Tuk on the top, while Kiri and Rotxo held onto the bottom of the fin. Then Ao'nung and Neteyam swam by with the ilus, waving at you all. You saw how some Metkayina reunited with their brothers and sisters, you even saw how some babies were hanging around a tulkun, as well as witnessing a family introduce their new born to a tulkun. It was nice seeing a moment like this, no one was fighting or anything. You even witness Ronal smile when she was with her spirit sister who had just given birth to a calf. Everyone was happy.
Tumblr media
It has been raining all morning, it was odd, You had been with the usual group of kids when something had happened. Everyone has been called to go to the main marui in which all the meetings happen. That was when you had found out that the sky people had killed Roa. Ronal was in enrage and in pain, she had just come back from seen the corpse of her spirit sister and her now dead calf. Everyone was now enraged, the sky people had killed a tulkun and now they had to pay.
Jake warned them to tell the tulkun to leave or else more of them could die, but no one seemed to be listening. Everyone yelled and claimed that they will fight for their brothers and sisters. Until Jake showed them the tracker that was on Roa. He again warned the to tell the tulkun to leave, this time they listened, some left to go warn the Tulkun.
You and Neteyam followed Lo'ak who had sneaked away from the crowd. You spotted him putting a saddle on an ilu, he was probably on his way to warn Payakan. Neteyam wanted to stop him but Lo'ak insisted on telling the tulkun who had become his brother. They had a small argument, but when Tsireya, Ao'nung and Rotxo had approached, Lo'ak did not listen and went into the water. You called out to him but no, he was going to Payakan.
Now you all jumped into the water and got on a ilu, chasing after Lo'ak. Again, you yelled for him but nothing. Then Kiri and Tuk joined you all into chasing after Lo'ak, until you saw him approach Payakan, who had a tracker. Not only that but the Sky People's ship was coming near. Neteyam had told Lo'ak to call his dad, and tell him what was happening.
Ninat and Neytiri had been asking around on where you all had gone, even asking the kid who had been around. He mentioned that you all went outside the reef. Then Jake received Lo'ak call. Ninat and Neytiri quickly put on their own ear piece to listen, when Jake asked who was with Lo'ak, he said that it was all of you together, you were helping a tulkun that had been under attack. When Neytiri and Ninat heard that you were all together, they had a look of horror, Jake had instructed them to stand down and to hurry back.
You were all struggling to get the tracker of Payakan, everyone did what they could but nothing, until Neteyam had the idea to tie a rope on the tracker and use the ilu to get it off. You were panicking seen how the ship was getting closer. The finally the tracker came off, Neteyam instructed you all to go while he got rid of the tracker. Back on the ilus, you were all hiding in some plants, hoping that you weren't spotted, then some machines began to drop into the water and spotted you all. You all tried to get away as fast as you could, but when you saw Tuk let of Kiri, you went back to try and get her.
When you manage to get a hold of her, you let the ilu go so that they thought that you had gone with it. Then you swam to a plant with an opening on the top, you held Tuk's hand and manage to pull her to the surface first then yourself. You were both taking a breath for a moment, then some came up causing Tuk to scream, but it was Lo'ak who asked if you were all okay. Then came Tsireya.
After that small breather, you all went back under water to swim back to the village. But then a next had surrounded you, Tuk and Tsirerya. You tried to get away but it was no use, Lo'ak got his knife to try and cut you all out, but then two ikran flown into the water and got a hold of the net. Lo'ak held tightly onto the net and continued to hold onto it as you were all taken out of the surface.
Tumblr media
The Ikran had flown you to the ship and just dropped you all their. Lo'ak held his knife up to one of the recoms who had warned him to drop the knife, he didn't, instead he tried to attack but got put on the ground and get held there. You crawled out of the net, and attempted to run to Lo'ak but got stopped by one of the recoms who had been near by. You tried fighting back against him, but he was much stronger and held you down. Tsireya had also tried to fight off one of them and so did Tuk, but no. Spider ran outside and tried to plea with them to not hurt you all, but they didn't listen.
You heard one of the recoms yell to take you away, you then were dragged along with Spider inside the ship. You were struggling with them, not wanting to go but you were forced. Your wirsts have been tied together so that you didn't try anything. Then they left you with Spider. He told you that everything was going to be okay and that they'll figure out what to do.
Then something had made the ship to move violently, turns out Payakan had manage to jump onto the ship somehow. Next thing you knew you saw how Spider got a fire extinguisher and use it as a weapon to hit some guy, then he proceeded to hit the metal on some controllers. People had gathered around him to try and take him, Spider had basically made the ship to sink.
Everyone had to evacuate or else you'd all drown, you followed close behind Spider, you didn't want to be separated him him since you haven't seen him in month. Next thing you knew, both Neteyam and Lo'ak came down and attack the sky people who were guiding out. Once that was done, you all had to move fast, there was still people around that might try and kill you all.
You found a way out, which was basically the only way out, but it wasn't going to be easy. You were getting shot at, Neteyam took the gun from Lo'ak and shot back at who was shooting towards you. He instructed for Lo'ak and Spider to go first, when his gun ran out of bullets, he got a hold of your hand and jumped into the water. You all swam away to not be spotted, the whole time you were struggling to swim. You felt a pain in your abdomen, it hurt so bad but you forced yourself to swim. Once away from the danger, both Spider and Lo'ak had gave each other a high five, then Neteyam noticed you struggling to stay up.
"Y/n? What's wrong?" he asked, worriedly. "I don't know.." you cried out in pain, then Neteyam noticed the water around you had began to change into a red. "Oh no, y/n's been hit!" Neteyam yelled towards the boys, then they looked over at you and Neteyam. You brought your hand out in front of you and saw how your hand had a bit of red. "Oh god!" Lo'ak cried out. Everyone was panicking. Then Tsireya had approached you all with her ilu. "What's wrong?" she asked. "Y/n got shot!" Lo'ak informed her. Tsireya got off the ilu and let Neteyam get on then he pulled you on the back. You continued to hold your wound in pain.
They manage to move you out of the ship. Their was a rock near by it was big enough for all of you to stand on. Neteyam got off the ilu and with the help of everyone got you off and tried to get you on the rock. Jake had approached the group that was struggling to get you on the rock. "Dad! It's y/n!" Lo'ak yelled out, Jake then got close to them and helped you get on the rock. Now on the rock, you were laid down, you continued to hold onto your wound with both hands. "Let me see y/n" Jake asked, you slowly removed your hands from your injury. It was bad, you needed medical attention immediately, if it doesn't get treated any longer, you could suffer the same consequences he did as a human. "Neteyam, Tsireya, take y/n back to the village, now!" Jake instruted them.
Without second thoughts, Neteyam and Tsireya carried you back on the ilu, Neteyam got on first, then you in the middle and then Tsireya. They tried to get the ilu to go as fast as he could back to the village. Tsireya had been helping you keep pressure on the wound. After a little while longer, you got to the village. The warriors were at the village, making sure that the Sky People didn't get to the village and some were injured and getting treated by the healers. Ronal had been running around, asking where Tsireya was, then she spotted you all approaching. Neteyam got off the ilu and picked you up bridal style. You were looking pale, must be due to the blood lose.
Tsireya ran towards her mother in a panic. "Mother! It's y/n!" she yelled and got to her. Ronal then saw you in Neteyam's arms, looking really pale and holding onto your wound weakly. "Follow me!" she instructed, Neteyam and Tsireya followed the Tsahik along with other healers to her marui, Neteyam had been keeping you to stay awake and to not close your eyes. When at the marui, you were placed on the mat by one of the women while Ronal got her tools ready. She instructed Tsireya to go tend to the others who were wounded while Neteyam stayed.
Ninat had heard about your arrival, but when she heard about your injury she ran towards the Tsahik's marui to see you. Ronal saw Ninat running in a panic "hold her back!" she yelled, as she got to work with you fast. Neteyam then got on her way and hugged Ninat. "Y/n!" she yelled in tears, Neteyam continued to hold her back as she struggled to get away from him. "Please! Ronal and others are taking care of her!" Neteyam mentioned, still holding Ninat away from you and Ronal. "I want to see my child!" she cried out more, really wanting to see you, but to no avail. Neteyam had pulled her a bit further. "Please Ninat, she is doing everything she can" he consoled to the weeping woman. Ninat had stopped and hugged Neteyam, now in tears. Worried that her child could possible die or suffer a bad injury.
Tumblr media
Hours had passed, Ninat and Neteyam were still waiting outside the Marui was the women worked on getting you healed, both worried for you and those who were still out there. They watched as the women did everything that they could, they had to come in and out to exchange the now bloodied water. They had stepped out so many times, you must have lost a lot of blood. Ninat had been prying to Eywa to not take you away so soon, the thought of it just hurt her.
Then the rest of the family had been back and had approached them. "How is y/n?" Jake asked, Ninat had dried tears in her eyes and her voice was raspy. "We haven't been told anything." She cried out again. Everyone watch the mother weep for her child, it hurt so bad. Neytiri had approached Ninat and pulled her into a hug, allowing her to cry on her shoulder. Everyone was silent, the only sounds that were heard were of Ninat's sobs.
Another few hours had passed, it was already dark, but the family continued to stand outside the marui. Then the women that helped Ronal stepped out of the marui, then they bowed to the Tsahik who had thanked them and they left with some things. Ninat saw Ronal and quickly went over to her. "How is she? How is y/n" she asked desperately Tsahik. Ronal had dried blood on both her hand and skirt. "Y/n is alright, she lost a lot of blood, but she is strong. It was not her time yet." She said, this made everyone sigh in relief, specially Ninat. "May I see her?" she asked. "Of course." Ronal got out of the way to allow Ninat to enter.
Ninat basically ran in the marui and knelt down in next to you. She saw the small stitches. "My child" Ninat whispered, seen your eyes slowly open. "Mama?" you whimpered out, Ninat took your hand onto hers and placed it on her cheek. "I'm right here my child, thank the Great Mother you're okay" she said, tears still streaming down her eyes, happy that you were okay. She gave the back of your hand a small kiss. "I'm glad to see you mama" you said sending her a small smile. "I'm also glad to see you my child." She said smiling back at you.

Longass for the nights and days of life Chapter Eight RAGE Notes
I had a LOT of strong opinions on this one, babes. Oh ho boy it’s time.
-I thought the Olangi were absorbed into the Omaticaya and not other plains clans, I wonder if there’s a particular reason they weren’t in this fic… I'm always suspicious of every decision Lottie makes.
-Tonowari getting an invite to this gathering from Jake: nah.
-Listened to Cover Me In Sunshine on repeat reading this. That’s what Spider and Ninat were singing, I don’t make the rules.
-Jake fighting the English innuendo has to be every Na’vi hearing him speaking Na’vi every day. He has to be fucking it up in a way that makes it dirty some of the time.
-The heard stuff has me like, on the edge, I think it means some shit.
-The absolutely hilarious idea of Jake and Neytiri keeping maskless-only-human-left Spider around and thinking no one is gonna question it is so fucking funny to me. I also love them keeping their GOD CHILDREN secret. EYWA IS THEIR GOD WHO IS GOING AGAINST THIS? Like, if literally God blessed me with kids in an obvious miracle way to people that all super believe in God I’d be like, so this happened. Crazy right? Anyway- I also love that they didn’t discuss it beforehand, like they just figured it’d all be literally fine. They are so goofy and fucking stupid as fuck.
-Spider giving Neteyam bits of fruit makes me want to die! That’s aDORABLE! He is a PROTECTIVE older brother. They are not going to survive his kidnapping.
-Neytiri really came for Neteyam’s ass with that intro. "Here is my brave, cool, son, and my loser son who can't say hi."
-Ah, it’s because the Olangi are our dissenters it seems. I also really like this idea of an anniversary mourning period, I haven’t seen that yet. Every time I see a new idea in this fandom I get hard as a rock (figuratively), like I didn't even tHINK of this concept and I thought we were running out of new ideas.
-Love Jake public speaking king. I always forget he is a natural born leader and speaker.
-We love an Eytukan spirit tree moment. Although, now that I'm thinking about it, he may be the character that means the least to me.
-For some reason I cackled at Jake “the fire is too hot on my legs, Neytiri!” Sully.
-INFORMATIVE AND EYEOPENING IS THE WORST THING TO SAY EVER ABOUT SOMETHING THAT WASN’T A FULL LECTURE, THAT MEANS U HATED IT AND YOU’VE BECOME A WORSE PERSON BECAUSE OF IT. This man Tsantu is a school shooter that everyone saw coming.
-Lol Jake and Neytiri both feeling wary around Tsantu because he’s just them if they didn’t find each other to heal for. I am laughing through my tears. It's a great in depth character analysis though. Usually, I hate the concept of healing for each other, and I hate how much I adore codependency, but if you think about it all Na'vi are pretty codependent with their mates. Jake and Neytiri though? They are a whole 'nother level. They built their second chances on each other. Without the other they don't have the life they have, and they functionally have nothing to live for.
-Lol maybe he won’t assassinate someone and instead will be fixed by fucking Peyral.
-I didn’t ask this before, but MOE?? WHY IS HIS NAME MOE. IT MAKES ME LAUGH EVERY TIME I READ IT, I AM PICTURING ONE OF THOSE TERRIBLE HIPPIE GUYS ON SURVIVOR.
-Yeah, nope, we are still scared of Tsantu. He’s still school shooter vibes.
-Ah yup, there he goes, time to murder a whole family?? Sure that’ll fix it all buddy. Eywa knows and that’s why you haven’t seen ur mate, psycho. A lot of people have lost people and haven’t tried to murder families, my guy.
-LOL FAMILY ANNIHILATORS FEAR ONE MAN AND ONE MAN ONLY, AND IT’S SPIDER SULLY. HE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO COUNT BUT HE’LL STOP A FAMILY ANNIHILATOR IN HIS TRACKS.
-Lol I get the point but to say this shit to Neytiri of all people is batshit. She has lost literally so much, I was waiting for her to be like “Hey, my sister was murdered in front of me, then my entire home was burned down and my father and my best friend died in front of me as well, what more do you need me to loose until we’re even buddy? Murder all three of my children and my mate and then we are good?? This isn’t the grief olympics, man. We aren’t competing.”
-Tbh they are all being A LITTLE FUCKING GENEROUS with this guy imo. I have always been of the mindset that trauma is a reason and not an excuse. This dude attempted to kill an entire family. Three children. Babies. The only reason he didn’t is because one kid woke up. He is not the first or the last person to have lost family, lost a spouse, lost a child, or even to have witnessed this specific loss personally. He’s not the first person to have wanted someone else to feel that pain with him. But making the decision to cause that same pain, attempting that, that’s unforgivable to me. That makes you no better than the person that did that to you. Idk man maybe it doesn’t fit here, but that’s my continuous domestic abuse argument. “Oh, he was abused too,” well, that makes it even worse to me that he knows what it feels like and still actually went to go cause that same feeling for someone else. It’s disrespectful to those who have been through the same trauma and don’t repeat the cycle. Anyways. No justice for Tsantu. Throw him to the wolves. Jail for attempted child murder? He also did assault a kid. The last fic I read with this premise only Jake was attacked (although much more successfully) and when I tell you the attacker was given the death penalty I am not joking. Forgiving this guy alone is crazy (although I understand the investment in moving on, and improving and being better than those who hurt us), bUT TO MAKE HIM AN AMBASSADOR?? Jesus fuck, I might as well hire a bank robber to be my accountant. How can we trust this aTTEMPTED CHILD MURDERER with any ambassador position on Pandora, after this he wouldn’t be allowed within 300 feet of schools.
-Neteyam being shy and Spider being a clown is ADORABLE.
-BOB TRIPPING AND JAKE LAUGHING AT HIM IS SENDING ME. I'M WAITING FOR THE DAY THE FICS BECOME LIKE ROUGE ONE FICS WHERE K2S0 IS JUST A REALLY TALL AND UNEMOTIONAL GUY. BOB IS JUST A BIG GUY WITH A SKIN CONDITION WHO IS JAKE'S BEST FRIEND.
-SWAPPING KIDS MID FLIGHT, HILARIOUS AND CRAZY.
-I loved the repeated family version of the toruk chase, almost the same ending but with the kids laughing instead. It’s like they’re all having their out of danger relief moment, and this time Jake and Neytiri are the adults and seeing first hand how bonkers they were lol.

M'not Avoiding Him ~ Tsu'tey x reader
Main Masterlist ~ Avatar Masterlist
Tumblr media
3350 words Warnings: vague mentions of injury + The Omaticaya begin recovering and rebuilding after the sky people left under the guidance of their new Olo'eyktan, Tsu'tey. Jake and you had gone through the transfer ceremony, you both start finding your place in the clan. You thought yours was going to be next to Tsu'tey because of how close you two had gotten close but that changed when you catch him with another woman.
Tumblr media
It took a while for things to settle down after the great war and the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains. The Omaticaya had to find a new home, the other clans returning to theirs, and the full transition to the new Olo'eyktan. Tsu'tey was taking the new position with stride. Not only because he had been training for this but also he had the help and support of Moat, Neytiri, Jake, and I.
Over that time and after Jake and I were permanently transferred to our Navi bodies With much reluctance, Tsu'tey had become accepting of us. He and Jake of course still butt heads but that will never change. Tsu'tey and I however grew closer. He seemed to really enjoy my company.
"Thank you, Ninat. I'll make sure Tsu'tey gets this." I held the bag of items that she asked me to deliver. I walked through the newly constructed village. It was nice to see the people getting back to their normal way of life. I made it to the Olo'eyktan's meeting marui. When I noticed a meeting going on inside, I walked over to a nearby branch and lounged on it.
"Hey Y/N!" I looked up and saw Jake walking my way. Behind him, many others exited the marui.
"Hi Jake. Meeting over?"
"Yeah. You could have come in. I doubt Tsu'tey would have said anything." He leant against the tree. I shrugged. "What are you doing here anyway?"
"Tsu'tey asked Ninat for something. I'm delivering them for her." I said, motioning to the bag.
"Well, you can go on in. I got to meet Norm. Bye." He waved as he ran off. I got up and walked towards the entrance to the hut. I paused when I saw Tsu'tey and sighed. He was picking up a few things that were scattered. He then stood up straight and looked over something. From here it looked like a child's drawing. A rare soft smile came across his face. I smiled as a warm feeling came over me. It was crazy how small things can fill my heart.
"Cute." I mumbled. I was about to step forward when I saw a woman come into view. Tsu'tey's smile disappeared as he turned towards her. I couldn't see his face anymore.
I couldn't hear them but I could tell by the woman's body language and facial expression that she was flirting. I watched silently as she got more and more friendly. Tsu'tey didn't seem to react much. I felt my heart constrict at the sight. When she stepped in even closer, I immediately turned away when she went to wrap her arms around him.
"Nope, nope, nope." I walk back down the path a bit. I took a big breath to calm myself down. "You don't know what was going on. It could be nothing. Don't jump to conclusions." I talked myself down while clutching the bag to my chest. Once calmed down, I slowly walk back up and towards the hut. To avoid seeing them like that again, I call out Tsu'tey's name.
"In here. Come in, eylan." He answered before I heard him quietly speak to the woman. I heard something along the lines of 'you need to go.' I walked in and the woman walked past me in a huff. "How can I help you, eylan?" He looked up at the time.
"I have the things from Ninat you asked for." I took the bag off my shoulder. He reached out and took it from me, his hand brushing over mine.
"Thank you." He smiled and turned to set the bag aside. "I didn't see you at the meeting. Was something wrong?"
"No I was just getting back from an evening flight and Mo’at asked for help then Ninat caught me."
"Oh, very well. I'm glad there wasn't anything wrong." He said sincerely. I nod and look away from him. I kept seeing the other woman hanging off him. "Is something the matter?"
"No, I'm just hungry."
"Oh, well." He grabbed the bag. "Let us head to dinner."
"Okay."
After that evening, I sorta avoided Tsu'tey. I had started to notice the woman around him more. I decided to keep my distance. The things I normally help Tsu'tey with, I made excuses to not do. Everytime I could see the confusion on his face but he never said anything. But Neytiri did.
"Why?" She said out of the blue as she and Jake sat down next to me.
"Hmm?" I looked up at her. "Why what?"
"Why are you avoiding Tsu'tey?" Jake asked.
"M’not avoiding him. I've just been busy and can't help him like I normally do."
"Uh huh. Yeah." Jake said almost sarcastically. The looks they were both giving me told me they didn't believe me. I signed and looked back at my snack. I spaced out a little until Jake snapped to get my attention.
"It's really nothing guys. I swear." I got up. I brushed off my lap. "Don't worry about it." I walked away. I didn't mention that I had noticed Tsu'tey nearby.
I groaned as I walked towards Tsutey's hut. Mo’at had asked me to go ask him to come see her. She couldn't go see him herself because she was extremely busy. I couldn't say no to her and I had a feeling Jake or Neytiri had something to do with this.
"Sneaky little shits." I mumbled as I climbed up the tree to his home. I made it up and stepped in. Normally Tsu'tey never has anyone in his home. This time I was wrong. I gasped when I saw the woman wrapped Tsu'tey. He was backed up against the wall with his hands on her waist. Both of their eyes shot towards me.
"Y/N..." Tsu’tey's face twisted as he pushed her away. "Please listen. I..." I didn't let him finish before running out. I jumped and climbed down from the tree. I took off running in a random direction. I could feel my heart break as I ran.
Tsu'tey was following. and calling for me to stop. I didn't listen, I couldn't. If there was one thing I was grateful for Neytiri teaching me at this moment, it was how to run and disappear into the trees. I could hear him getting closer and I moved faster. Silently, I slip behind a boulder near a cliff edge and stay still.
"Y/N!" Tsu'tey came into the clearing and slowed to a stop. I could hear him turn in circles, looking around for me. "Y/N! Please! If you can hear me, it wasn't what you think. That woman does not mean anything to my heart."
"hmm?" I made a small sound of confusion before covering my mouth.
"I don't have any feelings for her! What you saw in my home, I did not return. She has no respect for boundaries no matter how many times I have refused her advances. My heart only and ever will belong... to you." He said quietly but I could hear it. If this were a human male, I would call bullshit. But with Navi men, most don't believe in playing around.
"Tsu'tey..." My heart told me to go to him but my head was too overwhelmed, too confused.
"Ga!" He yelled in frustration. I heard the sound of flesh against a tree so I assumed he had hit one. Too overwhelmed and still in doubt by the whole thing, I stepped back to sneak away. I didn't get too far before I felt the ground give way under my feet.
"Ah!" I screamed as I fell. I tried to grab onto something but came up with nothing.
"Y/N!" Tsutey's panicked voice was the last thing I heard before pain exploded in my body before I was knocked out.
3rd POV
Tsu'tey ran over to the cliff and saw Y/N unconscious at the bottom. He let out a cry before descending down to then. With shaky hands he checked them over to assess the situation. When Y/N didn't look in danger of fatality, he relaxed a bit. He closed his eyes and took a centering breaker.
"Oh Eywa..." He muttered before carefully picking them up. Before anything else, he ran for Mo’at's hut. "Mo’at!"
"Dear Eywa!" She jumped and nearly dropped the bowl of oitment she was holding, spooked. She looked at him annoyed before seeing Y/N in their state. She motioned to a mat. "Lay them down."
"Yes." He quickly and gently laid them down. Mo’at immediately began attending to them. "A cliff gave way under her feet."
"I see." She nodded. She worked quickly and efficiently. Tsu'tey sat on the side, never leaving and never looking away. He kept vigilance over Y/N even after Mo’at had finished and stepped out.
Y/N's POV
The feeling of someone running their fingers through my hair woke me up. I groaned softly and their fingers paused for only a minute before continuing. I opened my eyes and looked up at the blurry figure above me. When my vision cleared, I realized it was Neytiri and my head was in her lap.
"Neytiri..." I sighed. "What happened?"
"A cliff's edge gave way under your feet." She explained. "Tsu'tey found and brought you to my  Mother immediately."
"Oh, Okay. Yeah, I remember that now." I muttered as the ache in my body made itself known.
"You know... He hasn't left your side since." I looked up at her confused. She motioned to the side with her head. I looked and saw Tsu'tey asleep against the wall next to me.
"Oh..." I felt my heart swell.
"There is nothing between them, eylan." I looked up at her. "Tsu'tey and Lulon."
"There isn't? Nothing at all?" I sat up too quickly. She steadied me.
"No. Much to her displeasure." I gave her a questioning look and she chuckled softly. "Lulon has been trying to pursue Tsu'tey ever since they both were able to take mates. She was relentless with it, even though Tsu'tey did not return her advances. She tried even when he was to be mated with Sylwanin and then myself. She didn't care nor listen to reason. She only halted her advances when the fight with the sky people got worse."
"Are you serious?" I asked in disbelief. She nodded. "She's a bitch."
"I have to agree." She laughed. "Tsu'tey was always cordeil in his denial of her. I think she thought she had a chance now since he was not promised to anyone. What she didn't count on was his heart already belonging to someone else." She smirked before getting up.
"Where are you going?"
"To get Mother. So she can check to make sure you are alright now that you're awake." I nodded and she left. I turned to look at the sleeping Tsu'tey. He must have been exhausted if Neytiri and mine's talking didn't wake him up. I admired him, my head falling to the side like a puppy’s.
"What am I going to do with you?" I whispered as I moved a braid out of his face. I giggled as his nose scrunched but he didn’t wake. It faded away when I noticed his bruised and bloody hand. From the looks of it, that's the hand he hit the tree with before I fell. I scooted closer and gently shook him. I softly called his name, trying to wake him up.
"Hmph." He jolted awake, hand coming up to grab my wrist. He blinked a few times before he seemed to fully come to.
"Hey there sleepy head." I giggled softly. He became alert immediately, grabbing me gently by the arms.
"Y/N! Are you alright? Are you in pain? I'll go get Mo’at. I'll..."
"Hey, hey. Calm down." I interrupted his rambling, setting my hands on his chest. "I'm fine. I do have some aches. Neytiri already left to get Mo’at."
"Neytiri?"
"Yes. She was in here sitting with me while you slept." He relaxed.
"How long have you been awake?"
"Only a short bit. Long enough for Neytiri to tell me about Lulon and her actions." He sighed and let his head fall back.
"I see." He nodded before swallowing a little hard and licking his bottom lip. I looked at him confused.
"What is it, Tsu'tey?"
"Did you hear me? Yesterday? Before you fell." He asked almost nervously as his eyes met mine. I smiled and cupped his cheek.
"Yes. I did." He looked down. I can see the curiosity and nervousness swimming in his eyes even as he wasn’t looking directly at me. "And my response is that I feel the same. My heart only belongs to you."
"Y/N." The rare, energetic smile I love came across his face as he looked up at me. He gathered me in his arms and hugged me right. I giggled and hugged him back. "Oh, yawne. You've made me the happiest man alive. You will not regret this I promise."
"I know. I know I made the right choice in my mate." I placed my hand over his heart. "I see you, Tsu'tey te Rongloa Ateyitan. " He set his hand over mine and set his forehead against mine.
"And I see you, Y/N L/N." We sat in each other's embrace for a little bit before a small knock filled the air. We both looked to see Mo’at in the opening to the hut with a small smile.
"I hope I am not interpreting."
"No. Come in. This is your space after all." Tsu'tey waved her in. She came in and I pulled away reluctantly to let her check me over. It was quiet for the moment. She deemed me okay and to take it easy. I nodded and she asked, "So, do I need to begin Tsahik training?"
"Oh um..." I blushed and looked at Tsu'tey for help.
"In time, Mo’at. For now, let us spend time together and become One. There is time for that later. I know from personal experience that Y/N is a quick study." He took my hand and kissed my palm. I could see Mo’at hiding a smile in my peripheral vision.
"Of course." She finished up before looking at us. "I am happy for you both.Truly. Eywa has blessed you both."
"Thank you Mo'at." I said before giving the seeing gesture. She returned before giving Tsu'tey a hard look.
"Now sit. Let me see that hand of yours you refuse to let me look at in all your worrying." She    pointed at the mat. I giggled as his ears fell back like a scolded child. He gave me a half hearted pointed Look and I covered my mouth still giggling.
"Yes Tsahik." He moved over and gave her his injured hand. I moved to sit on my knees behind him. I kissed his shoulder before setting my chin there, resting my body against his back and loosely Wrapping an arm around him. He froze up for only a second before relaxing into me, holding his free arm over mine.
"They're cute." I heard a muffled Jake say from somewhere outside.
"Jake!" Neytiri hissing and a loud smack followed. I chuckled and Mo’at rolled her eyes.
"Just like children ..." She muttered.
"Hey! I heard that!"
"Jake!" Another smack sound.
"Ow! Damn!" Jake fell into the doorway of the hut. I saw him glare at someone who I suspected was Neytiri before looking at us. He smiled sheepishly with a little wave. "Hiya."
"Skxawng" Tsu'tey muttered before turning to nose at my cheek. I smiled wrapped my other arm around his shoulders.
"I was rooting for you two from the very beginning." He sat up before moving onto a knee.
"Jake..." I chuckled and shook my head. He smiled cheekily before he was grabbed by his kuru. I saw Neytiri lean into view and smile.
"Congratulations." She bowed her head with an I see you before pulling on Jake's kuru.
"GA! Okay okay. I'm coming." Jake flailed a bit as she pulled him back. He stumbled to his feet and disappeared from sight. I heard Mo’at grumble.
“Just like a child.” She shook her head as she finished Tsu’tey’s hand. She stood up and grabbed a leaf wrap to cover the wounds. “There you are. Now let it heal before doing anything too stressful on that hand. I trust you can keep him in check, Y/N.”
“Of course Tsahik.” I stood up and so did Tsu’tey. Bidding goodbye to Mo’at, we walked out of the marui. We walked through the trees in silence. Tsu’tey reached out and set his hand on my hip, pulling me closer to him.
“Yawne. I cannot express how happy you’ve made me feel.”
“I think I know a way.” I said while stopping. He stopped and turned to look at me. He gave me a questioning look as I felt his hand spread out on my hip.
“How Yawne?” He asked.
“Like this.” I reached up and cupped the back of his neck, pulling him down into a passionate kiss. He froze up for a second before kissing me back. His arms wrapped around me. One around my waist while the other wrapped around my mid-back and he reached up to cup the back of my head as the kiss deepened.
“I see what you mean, Yawne.” He says as he pulls back. We were both panting slightly. He ducked down to kiss me again. I smiled into the kiss and deepened the kiss. Tsu’tey pushed me back a little and I felt the bark of a tree against my back. We made out for a few minutes against the tree until an exaggerated gasp interrupted us. We both pulled away to see Lulon standing there.
“What is this?!” She nearly screeched.
“This is a kiss between lovers. I am aware that the concept of lovers is foreign to you but I would appreciate it if you stop bothering Tsu’tey with your obsessive crush. He has let you down nicely so I am here to tell you bluntly. He does not feel the same nor has he ever felt the same.” I said. She looked at me offended while I could feel Tsu’tey looking at me in surprise.
“I cannot believe…” She started.
“Believe it. If you bother my future mate again, we will have problems. You should have respected it when you Ole’eyktan when he turned you down.” I said. She paled a little and looked between us. She nodded and quickly disappeared into the trees.
“Future mate?” I blushed heavily at the suggestive tone of Tsu’tey’s voice. I turned and hit his chest.
“Shut up.” I muttered. He laughed wholeheartedly and I admired the rare sight. He slowly stopped and smiled down at me.
“Well as your future mate, I appreciate getting Lulon to leave me alone…finally. Do you know how long I have tried to deter her? She doesn’t know boundaries.” He began to rant. I watched, chucking a bit. He paused when he heard me chuckle.
“Jake has rubbed off on you a little bit.” I said. His nose scrunched up a bit with disgust before his shoulders dropped.
“Maybe a small amount.” He said. I smiled and grabbed his hand.
“Come on. I think we both need some more rest.”
“I agree.” He pulls me along a trail. We walked for a while before he guided me to a secluded small pond. On the side of the pond was mat and some baskets. “This is a spot where I come to be alone or clear my head. I want to share this spot with you.”
“Thank you, Tsu’tey.” He went over and sat on the mat, beckoning me over. I go over and sit next to him. I feel his tail wrap around my hips and he lays down.
“Come, lay down.” He gently urges.
“The tough warrior, acting so gentle right now.” I tease before laying down and settling down next to him. He shook his hand before he took my hand and let out a breath of content.
“Let Ewya bless us with a wonderous life.” He said softly before kissing my hand. The sounds of the wildlife and gentle breeze around us seemed to promise just that.

"Lo'ak, I want to go home."
"We can’t go right now, it isn't safe"
"But..."
"I'm sorry, Tuk."
⟪⁓º⁞⩗⩘⁞º⁓⟫⟪⁓º⁞⩗⩘⁞º⁓⟫⟪⁓º⁞⩗⩘⁞º⁓⟫
They had sat there for so long, night had fallen before Lo'ak had deemed it safe for them to finally leave. After many apologies and promises, Lo'ak had managed to get Tuk to come out of her hiding spot in his neck, her tears long since dried as well as the rivulets of blood trailing down her face. He had used the dying sunlight to pick out whatever wood splinters that he could, shushing any and all tiny cries that Tuk made, comforting her the only way he could.
He distracted Tuk by playing a game their father had taught them when they were much younger, I Spy he had said it was. To Lo'ak, it had seemed so long ago when they were all just little kids tripping over the tails of their parents, so happy and eager to spend time with them, learning and laughing and loving.
"I spy, with my little eye..." Tuk whispered, her big eyes narrowing as she looked around, hissing lightly as the skin pulled on her wounds, dried blood flaking. "Something... green!"
Lo'ak had just barely resisted the urge to roll his eyes, though he would not have meant any harm with it. It's only since they were in a jungle and basically everything around the was green!
"Mmm," Lo'ak hummed, pursing his lips as he feigned a thoughtful look, squinting his eyes as he looked around them. "Is it... leaves?"
Tuk giggled, though it was more subdued than Lo'ak was used to hearing from her, weighed down and tired. "No! Guess again!"
Lo'ak gave an exaggerated huff, crossing his arms. "Is it... moss?"
Again, Tuk giggled, this one lighter than the one before. "Nope! You got one more left."
"What? C'mon Tuk, you gotta give me a hint! Everything here's green!" he complained, though he was mindful to keep his voice down. Anippe still felt uneasy, so shaken from earlier that she had refused to move from their spot hidden between the dense branches. He smoothed a hand over her leathery skin, pushing whatever comfort he could afford through their bond, hoping that it would help his girl. Anippe rumbled quietly, shaking out her wings a little.
Tuk mirrored his thoughtful look from before, her arms crossing for the added effect. "Oh okayyy," she said, her arms falling to her sides. "But only one!"
"How merciful," Lo'ak sassed, ducking away as he nearly got hit by a little flying fist. "Hey! What's that for?"
"For being a meanie," Tuk retorted, sticking her tongue out at him. This time Lo'ak did roll his eyes.
"Your hint," Tuk continued, unperturbed by her brother's antics. "Is that it's alive."
Really?
"Really?" Lo'ak echoed his thoughts. "You gotta be kidding me! We're in a forest!" He threw his arms in the air dramatically, making Tuk burst into a fit of giggles that made Lo'ak's heart ache, made it ache for a time more peaceful than this, more loving.
"You asked for a hint, you never said it had to be specific." Tuk reasoned, sticking her nose in the air as a smug grin spread across her face. Lo'ak could feel Anippe's laughter, or rather the ikran equivalent of it, the deep purr like sound vibrated through her body, he could feel it travel up his legs and spine. His ear twitched at the sensation. Lo'ak felt a little weight lift off his shoulders, this was the most reaction he had gotten from Anippe since they fled the Avatars, she was finally starting to relax.
He felt a grin of his own, spreading as his eyes crinkled a little. He was so glad for his girl, his Anippe, maybe, if he and Tuk kept up at their banter, Anippe would relax enough to finally take them home, back to High Camp.
"Well giving is supposed to help, and that little sister, was definitely no a hint," he pointed a finger at her face, feigning a stern look but his swishing tail gave away his amusement. Tuk narrowed her eyes at him, scrunching her nose as she hmphed. "A hint is whatever I say it it because I'm the one giving it."
Lo'ak huffed. "Fine, whatever you say." He looked around again, looking for something that was green and alive, which could be anything really.
His hand smoothed over Anippe's skin again, her breath shuddering under his gentle touch. He glanced down, eyes catching her light green skin patched with brown and got an idea.
"Okay, is it..." he trailed off, wanting to put Tuk in some suspense. "Anippe?"
Tuk gasped. "How'd you figure that out?"
He smirked in return. "I guess I'm just that good."
"You literally asked for a hint." She countered blandly
"So?"
Lo'ak chuckled at the look she gave him, reminding him so much of their mother that it was kind of scary.
Anippe rumbled happily, shuffling on the branch, her wings twitching with eagerness. He could feel a surge of excitement through the bond, his heart pounding in tune with hers, blood rushing as his lungs filled with more air than he could ever have done on his own. He could feel muscles he didn't have tense, ready to spring into action as they ached to soar through the air.
He welcomed the urge, showing Anippe how eager he was for it as well, to finally be able to go home.
Anippe shifted on the branch, lowering herself and shaking out her powerful wings.
"Hold on." Was all Lo'ak said before Anippe pushed off, freefalling for just a moment before her wings began to beat in a steady rhythm. Lo'ak could feel the pull of muscles he didn't have as Anippe flew up into the treetops and into the open air. Tuk had yelped when they took off, but he barely noticed as the wind rushed past him, whipping his hair and filling his lungs.
It was euphoric.
Tuk wrapped her arms around him to keep from falling off, shuffling as close as she could from her position facing Lo'ak, having turned around when they had first landed so Lo'ak could check her injuries and she hadn't bothered to turn around again.
She hid her face in his neck, the sudden rush had made her feel woozy.
The wind felt cold as Anippe soared higher and higher, setting goose bumps across Lo'ak's skin. His blood rushed in his veins, steadily gaining speed as Anipped careened on, cutting through the still night air.
They were going home.
⟪⁓º⁞⩗⩘⁞º⁓⟫⟪⁓º⁞⩗⩘⁞º⁓⟫⟪⁓º⁞⩗⩘⁞º⁓⟫
The night was calm, cool in the fleeting daylight, and there was no better time to sit down and unwind after a long day.
A light breeze floated past the beaded curtain of Ninat's marui, cooling her heated skin as she continued her work, her hands moving deftly as they followed the repetitive pattern as she weaved. With her back to the entrance, she didn't see the frantic landing of an ikran, nor the two figures that stumbled from the beast's back, the taller one's knees buckling as he landed before he reached up and pulled a smaller figure from the creature.
Holding the smaller one close to him, he nearly dragged them both to Ninat's marui, the taller's eyes darting around them in a panic.
Ninat may not have seen them, but she could hear their shuffling steps, the wet sniffles of a young one and the soothing words of another. She had expected them to pass by her home, the two going off to find their parents, but was surprised when she heard the beads of her curtain clinking together. Ninat looked over her shoulder, not stopping her work, curious as to who had entered, expecting it to be two young ones who had mistaken her marui for their own, but her blood ran cold as she saw who had entered.
Lo'ak stood just in front of the entrance, a desperate look on his face as he silently pleaded at her, Tuk hanging from his side as she leaned into him, hiding her face in his shoulder. The two were scuffed and dirty, with scrapes on their arms and legs, and little cuts scattered across their skin.
Ninat sat there for a second, frozen on her seat on the floor, taking to two in with concerned eyes. Without saying anything, she put her work aside and stood, beckoning the two closer. Her voice was gentle, tinged with a hint of reassurance. "Come, Lo'ak. Bring Tuk inside. We'll take care of her."
Lo'ak nodded, his relief evident as he guided Tuk further into Ninat's marui. He hadn't known where else to go, his parent were an obvious don't, with his stunt at the last raid, he was still on thin ice with both of them, no matter how forgiving his mother had been. He couldn't go to his grandmother either, knowing that she would be more furious with him than both his parents together. With how much she doted on Tuk, Lo'ak was sure the old woman would skin him alive if he had brought Tuk in with the state she was in, her earlier enthusiasm having dulled as they drew closer to High Camp.
The familiarity of Ninat's kindness and understanding had made her the last place he could go to, knowing that she rarely got angry or judged anyone. He knew that she was able to help, having her stories from both her and his mother of when they were younger about all the things they got up to with his mother's sister, Sylwanin, who had been training as a tsakarem to be the next tsahìk. He knew that because of this that she should at least have some knowledge of the art of healing
Lo'ak's eyes darted nervously, avoiding Ninat's gaze as he stammered, "Auntie Nat, I... I didn't know where else to go. I... I didn't want to go to my parents or my grandmother. They... they don't know that I went out, or that I took Tuk with me."
"Oh, 'eveng," She said, eyes soft as she walked towards the two battered children.
Ninat pried Tuk from Lo'ak's side, gently shushing the girl as she keened sadly, little hands reaching for her brother. Without another word, Ninat sat Tuk down on a nearby bench, Lo'ak quick to take her side while Ninat swiftly gathered her minimal healing supplies, her movements purposeful and efficient. There was no need for questions or explanations at that moment. Ninat knew that the wounds before her needed attention, and that the healing would extend beyond just the physical.
She added a few logs to the low-burning fire, wanting to get as much light as she could. With deft hands, Ninat started to pull out some of the remaining splinters, softly apologising whenever Tuk winced. It was too dark, Ninat couldn't see if there were any more splinters left. She huffed and turned to Lo'ak. "On the workbench behind me should be a little Maglite there, it's silver and a little banged up." She nodded her head behind her, indicating to the workbench in question.
Lo'ak nodded and tentatively let go of Tuk's hand, ignoring her little cry in order to fetch the light. He was back quickly and handed it to Ninat who pressed her thumb on the back end to turn it on. She clicked it again to put the light on the brightest setting and then put it between her teeth aiming it at Tuk's face. It was doing a much better job than the firelight, allowing Ninat to better see the extent of the girl's injuries. Dried blood clung to her skin, flaking whenever she moved, the splinters had created streaks on the side of her face, as if they had torn into her skin. Some were deeper than the others, namely along the side of her face close to her ear, and there were some that had barely missed her eyes though they weren't very deep.
Ninat began to carefully pick out the last of the splinters, this time being able to be gentler than before because she didn't have to basically guess where the splinters could be. She was quick to finish as she soon began to grind several leaves and dried stems together, adding a bit of water after they had been ground into a powder. As she began to clean and apply the salve to Tuk's wounds, Ninat broke the silence with a calm voice, "Lo'ak, when did this happen? And why did it take you so long to come back?"
Lo'ak said nothing, not in the avoidance of answering the question, but thinking about what to say. He risked a glance at her, dull green eyes meeting brighter ones, holding the stare for as long as he could, Lo'ak sighed heavily as he tore his eyes away that looked too much like the Avatars, bright and green, just like his. He had always wondered why Ninat had green eyes because he knew that only those who had Avatar blood in them could have that colour eyes, with most of his siblings being the exception, though he's not sure if one of Ninat's parents is an Avatar or not.
Lost in thought as he was, he didn't notice the tears that had started to well in his eyes, a few stray ones managing to roll down his cheek and drip from his chin. He opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out, he coughed to clear his throat as if he thought it would actually help him. He looked down at Tuk's hand encased in his, his voice barely a whisper as he spoke. "It happened earlier today... We were out doing some archery practise. I had planned on going alone but Tuk had asked to come and... I couldn't really say no." He chuckled a bit, it sounding dead and hollow as it travelled through the quiet marui.
"I took us to where our mom taught me to shoot, the old targets were still there. I showed Tuk some of the basics and then we were shooting at the targets." His voice was distant, as if he were somewhere else entirely. "Tuk is an amazing shot, by the way." he added, coming back to himself a bit. "When we used all the arrows were all gone, I went to go get them and then I heard people talking... they were speaking English and they were so loud. I went closer to check and then I saw them... Avatars with these massive guns and decked out in all that human stuff from Hells Gate, it was clear they were soldiers."
Ninat stiffened, her hands pausing where they were dabbing a piece of cloth on Tuk's wounds. "Avatars? Like Norm?"
"Yeah, but they were way scarier." Lo'ak met her eyes, wide with what he could only guess was fear.
“Oh my,” she said, her eyes turning back to Tuk, hands wavering slightly as they pressed against her skin.
Lo’ak just nodded, not commenting on her shaking hands as he continued. “I thought I was hidden in the trees, but then the forest went all quiet and the Avatar went on like high alert and they were all looking around. There was one towards the back of the group who wouldn’t stop looking around. He kept pointing his gun at everything and turning around and I think he saw me, because he stopped for a single moment and then he moved on, talking into his comms, I couldn’t hear what he was saying but after that they kept moving.”
"I waited for a moment, to make sure they were gone before I went back to Tuk. When I got there I couldn't find her, so I called out for her, I think that's what brought the Avatars to us, me calling for Tuk. I kept at it for a little bit before she answered me back, I found her hiding inside a tree hollow, all curled up in a ball. After that, the Avatars had spotted us and me and Tuk had started to climb up to get to Anippe, that's when the one in charge order the others to take fire." He was speaking as if he was giving a report to his superior, his voice distant and almost robotic as he told her what happened.
"The first one was a warning shot, I know that for sure, the second one had just grazed me, I managed to dodge it in time, but the third was aimed at Tuk. I don't know what happened for sure, but I heard the shot go off, it hitting the tree and Tuk screaming. I looked up and I just saw her falling, clutching at her face as she screamed. I didn't think, I just acted and I launched at her, I didn't think I would get to her, but I did, I caught her and then we were both falling. I don't know if the Avatars were still shooting at us, but I think I had called for Anippe at some point because she came swooping and caught us both."
"The Avatars were shooting at us again as we flew off, but luckily Anippe wasn't hit, I doubt we would be here if she did." He looked up at Ninat, seeing her put a patch over the worst of Tuk's injuries, then taking a wet cloth to clean off the dried blood that had flowed down onto her neck and shoulder. He didn't notice it before, too rattled by what happened to fully take stock of both of their injuries. He could feel his back burn where the bullets had just barely skimmed him, his skin pulling painfully whenever he breathed too deeply.
"Once we were in the air, far away from the Avatars, did I think we were finally safe. I was wrong."
Lo'ak's voice had taken a darker tone, Ninat paused in her actions to look at him, startled at his tone.
"What happened?" Ninat broached carefully, all too aware of the shadow that had fallen over the boy's usually bright eyes.
"We were being chased by Toruk. Anippe, she... she refused to leave the tree cover until she was certain it was safe. We sat there for hours."
His words carried a heavy burden, a weight of shame and disappointment in himself for not being able to protect Tuk. The memory of his recent actions during the last raid weighed on his conscience, amplifying his fears of facing his father's disapproval so soon.
Minutes turned into an eternity as Ninat worked, her focus unyielding. The gentle touch of her hands, and the steady rhythm of her actions, offered solace to the wounded girl and the burdened boy beside her. They were embraced by the presence of someone who understood their pain, who sought to heal not only their physical wounds but also the emotional scars they carried.
With Tuk's wounds tended to, Ninat carefully set aside her healing supplies. She turned to Lo'ak, her voice carrying a sense of authority, "Lo'ak, your parents left just an hour before nightfall. They went to scout the railways and gather supplies from Hells Gate. They won't be back until morning."
Her words held a note of urgency as she continued, "But you need to tell them what happened and where it happened. It is important for your father to alert the surrounding clans, to warn them to steer clear of that area of the jungle."
Lo'ak nodded, his weariness momentarily forgotten as the weight of responsibility settled upon his shoulders. He understood the importance of his role in ensuring the safety of their community. It was a duty he couldn't ignore, no matter how heavy the burden felt.
As Ninat finished her instructions, she looked at Lo'ak with a soft gaze, offering him a reassuring smile. "You've done well by bringing Tuk here. Now come here, let me see your back." She beckoned him closer, having him replace Tuk in front of her as she tended to his injured back.
Ninat was silent as she worked, unlike when she was treating Tuk. She applied the same salve as before after she had cleaned his back, shushing the boy when he flinched away from her touch. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Tuk's eyes begin to droop, listing to one side as exhaustion slowly began to take over the girl. She hurried her work so she could finish up before the girl fell asleep sitting up.
Once she had patched over the grazed bullet marks, she put her supplies to the side, addressing the two children. A thought suddenly struck her. These two were children, children who had escaped from gunfire just hours before from a group of trained soldiers with a vendetta against their kind, and getting hurt in the process. Her stomach roiled at the thought of one of the soldiers managing to actually kill one of the children sitting in front of her. What has this life come to? Where children were being attacked for just being at the wrong place at the wrong time? Where her people attacked supply lines to weaken their rapidly growing enemy?
Gone were the times of peace, the times when they never had to worry about leaving their home in fear of being shot down from the sky.
Ninat didn't know how she felt about this revelation, but she was sure there was disgust and resentment swimming in the raging storm of emotion inside her.
"Tomorrow," She started, "When your parents return, you can share with them what happened. Trust that the adults will handle the situation. You both need rest, go to bed and gather your strength."
Gratitude swelled within Lo'ak as he helped Tuk to her feet, his heart lightened by Ninat's unwavering support. Together, they made their way back to their family marui, the weight of the day's events slowly lifting from their shoulders.
As they settled down for the night, Lo'ak couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of hope. The reassurance that the adults would take charge and protect their community soothed his troubled mind. With Ninat's words echoing in his ears, he closed his eyes, allowing sleep to claim him, trusting that a new day would bring clarity and resolution.
