Library of Luminaries: Frida Kahlo: An Illustrated Biography by Zena Alkayat and Nina Cosford --Adorable Gift Books I can Give in Emergencies Which I Also Got For Free so Double Bonus The nice thing about early reviewer book programs is a lot of the books are regular editions, vs Advanced Reader copies which are not supposed to be resold and might look tacky as gifts. It’s been harder for me to read in print lately, so I mostly request short things (or audio editions, I love LibraryThing so much). A sweet little book that’s short and to the point, but includes details a lot of similar books would leave out. Weak point is that it’s all the author’s art with no prints of Kahlo’s actual painting, which seems so weird. I’ll probably give it to my niece and nephew eventually.

My Name is Girl - Nina Cosford
After eleven A Series of Unfortunate Events books in a row I finally took Lemony Snicket’s advice and put my current book - The Grim Grotto down. Don’t get me wrong, I’m really enjoying the books but they weren’t doing my mood any good, just like he promised. So I took a little break and a little pick me up by reading My Name is Girl by Nina Cosford.
Tumblr media
I read it without stopping, she really has hit the nail on the head.
The book cover alone is gorgeous but once I started reading and as soon as I hit this page as I was in love:

A girls night out, everyone around me (and the girl in this beautiful illustration) seems to be having fun and saying their drunken ‘I love you’s’ there I am feeling sad and confused about myself (and life) I’m not like this every time I get drunk because that would be too depressing but lately, especially when I get too drunk I’ve been feeling like this. Now when I do drink, I don’t drink as much because of those feelings and because I kept pulling my necklaces off resulting in them breaking rather than taking them off properly.
I also wasn’t expecting this page to come:

I am a ladette. Is that a bad thing? I had to google and double check the meaning... ‘a young woman who behaves in a boisterously assertive or crude manner and engages in heavy drinking sessions.’ Yep, that’s me. I’ve ticked and dated this page and am going to come back to it the same time next year and see if I’ve changed. Although, I do like being a ladette. It’s comfortable because I don’t have to put on a front, can say what I think, don’t have to pretend to be someone I’m not, can have fun with an axe, make fires, not have to wear make up all the time, can swear and enjoy a few beers with my friends who are mostly male. I’ve always had male friends growing up, there’s no drama with them which I absolutely love and it’s perhaps one of the reasons I’m a ladette.
I could write forever and ever about how much I enjoyed this book, the gorgeous illustrations, the fact she’s covered the trials and tribulations of being a girl/woman perfectly... Bras that don’t fit, fitting room problems, wanting to be stylish but not sure how, the insecurities, the mood swings, trying to work out who we really are in this world, the best of our selves, the worst of our selves, the things we want to see in the world, over eating, over analysing, the effort of wearing clothes and nature wees means I’ll definitely be re-reading this book more than once.
I felt like I was reading her diary, but at the same time reading mine. Once I’d finished I held it in both hands and smiled to myself for a minute or so. A pleasure to read and look at, a very talented artist and a book I recommend to every girl/woman!
Oh, also this. It made me happy:
