Why did you join the Nimona Big Bang?

Because I wanted to challenge myself and because I never joined a Big Bang before.

Share something you like about the Nimona movie or comic.

I really LOOOVEEE the artwork of the comic and how they animated the movie (my art style is pretty much inspired by Nate's art style for the comic hehe). And I also love the designs of the characters and also the backgrounds for the movie.

Favorite characters: Nimona (movie version), Ballister Blackheart (comic version), Ambrosius Goldenloin (comic version)

Other hobbies: Drawing (of course), animating, listening to music, playing video games and someday I will start skateboarding (when I finally get a skateboard)

When you post an AU idea for Comic Nimona about her being free from the monster which represents pain and trauma in that story and a bunch of people who only watched the movie (where there is no monster and her powers/differences represent trans identity) start harassing you and calling you transphobic and media illiterate when they're actually illiterate because they either didn't READ the comic or somehow didn't realize that Nimona's powers are symbolically different in the comic despite multiple panels indicating otherwise

And also I think I found it harder to understand/be sympathetic towards ambrosius when I read the comic but like having him and ballisters relationship shown up front is so important in adding just these Stakes of kind of showing what they had, and like the idea that you can survive in this institution with just this one person as your pillar of support but that it's also something that can exist without that system in a different context and having to rediscover that..... Hmmmnmm

Because I keep seeing people who genuinely have not heard about the sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman, this is a great resource. It contains links to the podcasts where the victims' stories first appeared, and to commentary from other figures. Please be aware that Neil Gaiman has a hired a PR firm used by other celebrities such as Marilyn Manson accused of sexual assault. At the same time, a rash of bot accounts appeared across social media trying to bury the news with results like this:

Visually stunning, stunning visuals. If you are not a bot designed to launder Gaiman's reputation, please try to avoid acting like one. Until larger press outlets pick up the story, social media does, unfortunately, have a significant role in whether or not this story is forgotten. At least two of the victims were young fans who thought Gaiman was safe to be around. It is up to you how and whether you participate in fandom -- but please don't tag your posts "Neil Gaiman" unless they are actually about Neil Gaiman. Your Good Omens TV show fanart does not need to carry his name. It is, in fact, odd that he seems to have cultivated such a role in fandom that this ever became an expectation. Gifs from Wheel of Time are not typically tagged: "Robert Jordan", fanart of She-Ra or Nimona isn't tagged "N.D Stevenson." You'd expect to tag these names only if you were linking to an interview or a news story or otherwise posting about the real life person. It would be especially odd to tag a picture of Rosamund Pike doing something completely unrelated to Wheel of Time with "Robert Jordan"! And yet photos of Michael Sheen and David Tennant seem to be tagged with "Neil Gaiman" all the time. Is it that Gaiman fostered the hope that he might notice and respond to fannish activity? Is it that he tried to make himself so pervasive, and omni-present in the fandom, as to feel indispensable If so ... all the more reason to stop. Fans of these other works get along just fine without this, and so will you.

Nimona and Shera are from ND Stevenson so I'd like to think that if Gloreth turned around for Nimona (in my Reconciliation Au) their dynamic and look is similar to Catradora ☝️ coincidence? i think not!!

This is my alter for my first time participating in the Transgender Ancestor Rite

I’ve never conducted any kind of ancestor veneration or really a proper mourning ceremony before (I’m lucky to have not yet lost any people close to me). I invited Hermes to guide and accompany me through this.

I got a small bouquet of flowers along with the recommended glass of water as offerings and read out the prayer as I lit the candle. I read out a list of names of some of the trans folks who have passed in the U.S. this year. My heart goes out to all the other trans folks whose names aren’t or won’t be known, and to the thousands of other trans people across the world who have also lost their lives this past year.

I did not want this Trans Day of Remembrance to only be about grief, it did not feel right to me to not also celebrate the lives that were lived. For the restless souls seeking a simple, light-hearted comfort, I put on the movie “Nimona.” I especially wanted to play it for any who were lost before they had seen any kind of positive representation of themselves in the public eye. “Nimona” was so incredibly moving to me when I first watched it (it still is). The fact that such a beautiful, joyful, and heartfelt queer and trans film was so beloved it was nominated for an Oscar continues to leave me in awe.

I am slightly unsure if I did this the “right” way or something, but I’m confident enough the effort was ultimately meaningful. Partaking in this remembrance was grounding and gave me an appreciation for ancestor veneration. It made me feel more connected to the trans community even though I never felt any presences with me.

The dedicated rewatch gave me some peace and comfort, and I hope it gave that to someone else tonight too.

Why did you join the Nimona Big Bang?

I love having communities of people who care about the same things and create together!

Share something you like about the Nimona movie or comic.

The perfectly balanced genuine humour with absolute achy tragedy. It’s such a difficult mix to get right and both movie and comic get it spot on (though not in quite the same way!)

Favorite characters: Nimona (comic version), Ambrosius Goldenloin (comic version), Meredith Blitzmeyer

Other fandoms: The Owl House, Undertale, Deltarune, Dungeon Meshi

Other hobbies: I cosplay, draw, cross stitch… or really anything else I can get my hands on that makes a physical thing at the end of it.

I’m answering this questionnaire at a con, and as much as I get exhausted around people after a while there is something so magical about being surrounded by other nerds— and that’s one of the great things about Big Bangs and zines <3

okay so first off. what does being "full on adults" have to do with disliking a character? like?? are we not allowed to dislike or criticize fiction once we cross the age of eighteen?

secondly, i love how they imply that we hate catra because of some sexist reason, but then lists mostly women among the characters who were immediately forgiven and faced no criticism from the viewers. so maybe it's not people "hating on complex female characters" maybe we just dislike poorly written ones.

and who said people don't hold hordak, scorpia, entrapta, etc accountable for their actions? we do, it's just that catra played a more important role in the story as the main villain and adora's love interest so obviously she's under more scrutiny.

we also see her commit more heinous crimes on screen, unlike scorpia and lonnie who were just following orders and hordak whose crimes were all lipservice. it's a lot easier to like a character who only committed heinous crimes off-screen. again, not justifying hordak's behavior, i just think the writers failed to make him an actual threat.

also i don't know how the nimona comics were but in the movie, ballister and ambrosius did have a relatively healthier relationship than catra and adora. mainly because ambrosius never hurt ballister on purpose and he genuinely felt guilty for his actions. even when he turned on nimona, he did it to protect ballister. he wasn't just using all forms of abuse on his boyfriend just for the fun of it, and excusing it by saying that he had a shitty childhood.

"(...) in terms of Catra, we saw the beginning of her redemption arc but she still worked towards it. She still took time to reflect, give genuine apologies to the Best Friends Squad, and turn around for the better."

i'm sorry? when did she apologize to the best friends squad? because i only remember her giving a half-assed apology to adora. glimmer and bow never got an apology from catra. glimmer especially deserved an apology because catra's actions led to her mother's death. also, i've already talked about how catra didn't actually change for the better and kept repeating her toxic habits, so i trust i don't have to say it again.

i do agree that in azula's case, the hate was more undeserved, mainly because none of her actions were justified by the narrative. and like op said, azula didn't have someone to offer her proper guidance.

(although i have to remind you, ursa never called azula a monster. she disapproved of azula's behavior but the monster part was just how azula perceived it. but i guess you know more about these shows than me, right?)

and that's where catra's actions can't be justified because she got multiple ways out, people in her life were constantly giving her chances, and she still chose to do evil. catra had all the resources she needed to become a better person, she was given opportunity after opportunity from the very first episode, and she still chose to participate in the war and chose to abuse and hurt people.

Nimona Week 2025 FAQ

What is this?

Nimona Week is a celebration of our favorite shapeshifting sidekick, in both her movie and comic incarnations. We're hoping to encourage new fanworks of all kinds. This year, Nimona Week will be both here on Tumblr and on Bluesky.

When is it?

Nimona Week will take place from Sunday, March 30 to Saturday, April 5, 2025. Those dates were chosen because March 31st is Trans Day of Visibility.

However, it's never "too late" to be inspired or post fanworks. We'll try to reblog tagged posts during actual Nimona Week, so keep that in mind if you decide to post early or late.

Are there prompts?

There will be! Please feel free to share some suggestions here by December 21st. After prompt submissions close, you'll have the opportunity to vote for your favorites. We'll share final prompts by the end of January to allow writers and artists time to create.

What can I make?

You can make or write basically anything featuring Nimona-the-character: haikus, limericks, 100 word drabbles, ficlets, long fics, traditional art, digital art, gifsets, cosplay, embroidery, etc.

What if I'm not interpreting a prompt correctly?

We are not policing people's interpretations of the prompts. If a prompt inspires you to create, that's fantastic!

What about Goldenheart/Blackloin?

This event is Nimona-centric, but @goldenheart-week will return this summer. Fanworks for Nimona Week can absolutely include Ballister and Ambrosius (or other characters!) in addition to Nimona, but we want to keep her in the spotlight.

Are there any other Nimona fandom events?

That's up to the fandom! Another @nimonabigbang, a Reverse Big Bang, or a fic exchange can only happen if there are enough people willing to moderate and/or participate; fanweeks like this one and @goldenheart-week are a little easier to organize.

To provide feedback on possible future fandom events, you're invited to fill out this anonymous survey (even if you didn't participate in the 2024 Nimona Big Bang).

Are there any other multi-fandom events coming up where Nimona fanworks would be welcome?

We strongly recommend keeping an eye out for Fandom Trumps Hate in early 2025 — it's a multi-fandom online fanworks auction that's designed to raise money for progressive non-profits. You can sign up to write fanfic, make fanart, beta read, or perform other fan labor, and people can bid on your fanwork. If they win the auction, they donate directly to the non-profit(s) and submit proof of their donation. This is not a commission or selling fanwork; the fanwork you create is a thank you gift for the donation. Bidding often starts at $5.

There are also multi-fandom Big Bangs, monthly and weekly prompt lists, bingos, etc. We will often reblog those to help signal boost.
