Is there anything more boring than being in French town or city on a Sunday. Yep, being in a French town or city on Bastille day. The whole of Nîmes was abandoned, leaving an eerie feel to the streets.
Thankfully, despite the fact that non of the shops were open, the museums were. I visited the Musée des Beaux-arts. The museum was based in an impressive stately 19th Century building. The museum contained sculptures and paintings from Roman times up to the early 20th Century. The exhibitions were good, but again, there wasn’t that many of them.
As the evening drew in, I got ready to watch the European Championship final. First, I stopped at a Le Bouchon des Greffes for fish and chips to get me in the mood. The American couple sat next to me, laughed at my order. They were from Washington DC and like me travelling around the south of France. The gentleman informed me that the whole of France is basically on holiday during July, which explains why the streets are so quiet.
I found an Irish pub in a rougher part of town called O’Flaherty’s. Just before 9pm, the music went off and the match kicked off. To my frustration a band started playing outside at exactly 9pm. For once, I didn’t appreciate live music. After a dry first half, Spain scored the first goal. Cole Palmer levelled this making it 1-1, before Spain took the lead once again. The final score was 2-1 to Spain. It wasn’t coming home after all. To be fair, Spain were the better team. England are still a young team and I’m certain that in 2026, it’s coming home!
