Little Kapai out on the daily nature walk with all of the orphans from Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e). He was rescued by the Reteti team when he was only about a week old and is doing wonderfully. Having arrived so young, he had a lot to learn about being an elephant, but he had the rest of the Reteti herd and his keepers to show him how to browse, graze and navigate. Someday soon, he'll be big, strong bull, ready to return to the wild. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the first ever community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa. It provides a safe place for injured and orphaned elephant calves to heal so that they can be returned back to the wild. Lineated Barbet. (Can you spot me in the third photo?) . When I went to the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve in Singapore I came across a group of photographers all waiting and pointing their long lenses at one particular tree. . I asked them what they were looking at and it turned out to be this little fellow who had his head sticking out of the tree. . They were all waiting to photograph the bird flying out of the hole, and coming back with some food for the family. . I was not prepared to wait around since I didn’t have my 800mm nor a tripod—and one of them even joked and said I would not want to wait around without a tripod since it would take a while for the bird to fly back. . I continued my walk through the park and about an hour or so later I encountered the same group still in the same spot, waiting for the bird to come back. . Most of them had been there for several hours already, trying to capture this elusive bird. After peaking at some of the photos they took, it had me even wanting to stay there to see if I could catch him flying back. I couldn’t this time around but that just means I have to come back another time…right? . This is a non-native bird to Singapore, originating in Southeast Asia. . Lemorijo gets his afternoon bottle from Matiba. The rapidly growing orphaned baby elephants are fed two liter bottles of special formula every three hours, 24-hours per day. That means Lemorijo, in the more than 8 months he's been at Reteti, has drunk more than 2,000 bottles of milk. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), in northern Kenya is the first ever community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa.
