The UK parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is working on its report (and recommendations) from its inquiry into the economics of music streaming. One of the big talking points during the inquiry’s evidence sessions was equitable remuneration (ER): specifically extending it from radio and TV to some streams.
The Broken Record campaign has made ER one of its key requests of the committee; labels have argued firmly against it; and (in our view, at least) the committee seems to be leaning more towards the former camp. But the committee isn’t the British government, so if ER is to be extended, ministers will need to be convinced too.
That campaign is already starting. A letter sent to Prime Minister Boris Johnson – and shown to Music Ally this morning – sees a who’s who of British musicians backing such an extension. Sir Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Chris Martin, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Kate Bush, Roger Daltrey, Damon Albarn, Noel Gallagher, Laura Marling, Sir Tim Rice… and many more.
“Only two words need to change in the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act. This will modernise the law so that today’s performers receive a share of revenues, just like they enjoy in radio,” argues the letter. But it also calls for a competition inquiry (or at least a government referral to watchdog the Competition and Markets Authority); for songwriters to get a bigger share of streaming royalties; and the establishment of a dedicated regulator “to ensure the lawful and fair treatment of music makers”.
Later today, we’ll publish our quarterly Music Ally report, including our analysis of the key talking points of the inquiry, and what might happen next. One of our suggestions was that while the DCMS committee seemed sympathetic to the Broken Record campaign’s arguments, the government ministers seemed to be leaning more towards labels’ view of the world.
The letter shows that the former group are going to work hard to change that, and in wheeling out the musical big guns, the intensity of the lobbying has stepped up several notches – even before the DCMS committee’s report has come out. Labels and their representative body the BPI must now decide how best to respond.
Here is the full text of the letter, and its signatories:
———-
Dear Prime Minister,
We write to you on behalf of today’s generation of artists, musicians and songwriters here in the UK.
For too long, streaming platforms, record labels and other internet giants have exploited performers and creators without rewarding them fairly. We must put the value of music back where it belongs – in the hands of music makers.
Streaming is quickly replacing radio as our main means of music communication. However, the law has not kept up with the pace of technological change and, as a result, performers and songwriters do not enjoy the same protections as they do in radio.
Today’s musicians receive very little income from their performances – most featured artists receive tiny fractions of a US cent per stream and session musicians receive nothing at all.
To remedy this, only two words need to change in the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act. This will modernise the law so that today’s performers receive a share of revenues, just like they enjoy in radio. It won’t cost the taxpayer a penny but will put more money in the pockets of UK taxpayers and raise revenues for public services like the NHS.
There is evidence of multinational corporations wielding extraordinary power and songwriters struggling as a result. An immediate government referral to the Competition and Markets Authority is the first step to address this. Songwriters earn 50% of radio revenues, but only 15% in streaming. We believe that in a truly free market the song will achieve greater value.
Ultimately though, we need a regulator to ensure the lawful and fair treatment of music makers. The UK has a proud history of protecting its producers, entrepreneurs and inventors. We believe British creators deserve the same protections as other industries whose work is devalued when exploited as a loss-leader.
By addressing these problems, we will make the UK the best place in the world to be a musician or a songwriter, allow recording studios and the UK session scene to thrive once again, strengthen our world leading cultural sector, allow the market for recorded music to flourish for listeners and creators, and unearth a new generation of talent.
We urge you to take these forward and ensure the music industry is part of your levelling-up agenda as we kickstart the post-Covid economic recovery.
Yours sincerely,

A who’s-who of Oscar nominees, A-listers and top Hollywood executives came out to support the Motion Picture & Television Fund at its 17th annual “Night Before” party, which raised $5 million in support of the MPTF.
One of the key events of Oscar weekend, the “Night Before” party, held Saturday on the Fox Studios lot in Los Angeles and co-sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter, drew past Oscar winners including Mahershala Ali (also a current nominee, who came with wife Amatus Sami-Karim), George Clooney, Viola Davis (with husband Julius Tennon), Leonardo DiCaprio, Marcia Gay Harden, Allison Janney and Octavia Spencer.

Close, Grant and King made their way to the party just a few hours after collecting Film Independent Spirit Awards earlier in the day for best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress, respectively.
The 2019 host committee included a lineup of talent including Adams and Le Gallo, Ali, Tanya Haden Black and Jack Black, Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg, Amal and George Clooney, Close, Colagrande and Dafoe, Bradley Cooper, Tom Cruise, DiCaprio, Lady Gaga, Janney, King, Malek, Mortensen, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, Rachel Weisz, Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth, and Constance Wu.

CEO Kevin Tsujihara, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, Universal Pictures chair Donna Langley, Sony Pictures chair Tom Rothman and Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos also were at the bash, where guests enjoyed specialty foods from Carmelized Productions by Jon Shook & Vinny Dotolo.
Funds raised during the “Night Before” party are used to support the MPTF, which assists industry members in Hollywood of all ages by providing financial assistance, crisis counseling, caregiving support and the retirement facility in Woodland Hills that film and TV veterans call “home.”
In total, the annual event has raised more than $85 million since its inception in 2003.
THR returned as one of the presenting sponsors of the event alongside Delta Air Lines, Ford Motor Company, L'Oréal USA, Target, Yahoo! and YouTube. This marked THR's sixth year as the sole media sponsor of the party.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity of the presenting sponsors and donors for making the ‘Night Before’ an amazing evening, one that once again brings the industry together in the spirit of a community that truly takes care of its own,” Katzenberg said.

Marvel Introduced Its Best Guardians of The Galaxy Replacement Too Soon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5pNXqVK_a4 Marvel's finest replacement choice for the Guardians of the Galaxy is the unique Guardians workforce, however, they have been introduced a number of years too quickly. [fwduvp preset_id="modern-skin-dark_videofeed_playlist" playlist_id="tha guardians"] Marvel launched its finest Guardians of the Galaxy replacement a number of years too quickly when it introduced the unique workforce into the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In Marvel Comics, Star-Lord's Guardians is not the primary iteration of the group. The first Guardian workforce debuted within the late 1960s and was made up ofvarious band of superheroes from the long run. Instead of focusing on them, Marvel chose to middle the Guardians of the Galaxy films on the workforce that was established in the 2000s. In 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, audiences have been launched to Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Groot (Vin Diesel), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Drax (Dave Bautista). This group, which consisted of mostly obscure comedian guide heroes, quickly turned fan-favorites and even appeared outside their franchise with roles in each Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Some of them may even seem in Thor: Love and Thunder. Regardless, an end is in sight for Star-Lord's Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn, who directed the primary two films and is returning to direct the third installment, has confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will present a proper ending for Star-Lord and his pals. A fourth Guardians of the Galaxy film can nonetheless occur, but it surely must be with a brand new workforce. Looking at what Marvel is doing with its different characters, this plan makes sense. As Marvel has needed to transfer on from its fundamental Avengers lineup, an identical technique will possibly be taken with the cosmic aspect of the MCU. Marvel could continueto makeGuardians of the Galaxy films, but which group of house heroes ought to get the highlight? Unfortunately, the very best resolution - the original Guardians - have been launched too quickly and should now not be a possible substitute. The original Guardians of the Galaxy are based within the distant future. Serving on the primary roster was Vance Astro (a mutant who carries Captain America's defend), Martinex (an alien who can mission cold and hot power from his hands), Charlie-27 (an excellent soldier from Jupiter), Yondu (a deeply spiritual alien impressed by Native Americans), and Starhawk aka Stakar, a mysterious and highly effective being who actually shared the same bodily house as his spouse, Aleta Ogord. For years, Starhawk and Aleta Ogord could not be current on the identical time. The group, which started in their own comedian within the early 1990s, spent their time touring by means of the galaxy on a ship referred to asCaptain America, which was given this title by Vance Astro. In the comics, Astro has robust parallels to Captain America - somebody who he idolized his whole life. As a younger man, Astro turned an astronaut and went on a one-man mission into thehouse to discover a new planet. He was positioned in suspended animation, however by the point he awoke, the planet was already colonized, and a thousand years had handed. Like his childhood hero, Astro held on to outdated beliefs and helped type a team of superheroes, ultimately turning into their chief. The unique Guardians of the Galaxy team were tailored to the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In the film, Yondu (Michael Rooker) is angrily confronted by Stakar (Sylvester Stallone), who's the chief of the Ravagers and a former buddy. It's revealed that they were once a part of a workforce of warriors, which included Martinex (Michael Rosenbaum). One of the numerous Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 post-credits scenes unveils the full workforce, which consists of Aleta Ogord (Michelle Yeoh), Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), Krugarr, and Mainframe (voiced by Miley Cirus). Aleta and Stakar each have little or no in widespread with their comedian guide counterparts, though. In this scene, Stakar and the Ravagers determine to reunite in an effort to honor Yondu, who redeemed himself after dying by saving Star-Lord. If dealt with correctly, the original Guardians of the Galaxy workforce might have kicked off one other cosmic trilogy by being the protagonists of Guardians of the Galaxy 4, however their early MCU debut within the second movie hurts the probabilities of that ever taking place. Though they may simply be again for extra cameos in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it is arduous to think about them being the primary characters of their very own film. First of all, a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy movie will inform a brand new story, so it is possible that the film will middle on new heroes, versus beforehand launched characters performed by older actors. In this manner, Marvel can introduce and develop these characters for no matter story is written for Guardians of the Galaxy 4, without having to work round what was established within the second film. This is disappointing information for followers of Vance Astro's Guardians, as they may have been the right candidates for Marvel's subsequent space-based superhero team. Since theGuardians dwell within the 31st century, they may have despatched the MCU into unexplored territory, however, the future side of their story has been taken away. Over the course of over 20 films, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gone in all types of distinctive directions, however, the future is one place it hasn't gone but. Also, the heroes themselves are inherently completely different to Star-Lord's workforce. The present workforce is principally rogues, however, the unique Guardians are full-fledged heroes. That being stated, they arevarious bunch who all have their share of issues. They have the whole lot that the next workforce of Guardians wants. Despite what happened in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, is there any method the unique Guardians of the future can nonetheless have their story represented on the massive display screen? It is feasible that it might still occur, however some main adjustments to the supply materials (and the characters) must be made for it to work. It's important to level out that, when the film launched the unique workforce, it excluded Vance Astro himself, the main protagonist of the 1990s Guardians of the Galaxy comedian book series. Furthermore, Vance Astrowon'tseem in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3either. This means that Guardians of the Galaxy 4 can start an all-new story with Vance Astro as its main hero. But, he'd be without his supporting solid, which means no Starhawk, Yondu, Charlie-27, or his love curiosity, Aleta Ogord. To clear up this drawback, Marvel might herald other, lesser-knownmembers of the workforce (like Nikki), or embrace cosmic characters who don't have any connection in any respect with the unique Guardians. The film might still concentrate on Vance Astro's journey sooner or later, however, the individuals round him must be completely different. Either method, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has certainly made it tougher for Vance Astro's Guardians to get their very own cosmic film, but it surely's not necessarily impossible for his or her story to nonetheless be advised.

Reimagining and reworking ten carefully chosen composition from John Coltrane’s late music (from 1963 - 1967) with a fresh and modern new interpretation, The Late Trane perfectly balances Denys Baptiste’s unique artistic vision with the visceral emotions and cosmic references that encompasses Coltrane’s late music.

GIG LOG :: PHAROAH SANDERS QUARTET, DENYS BAPTISTE QUARTET, ALINA BZHEZHINSKA QUARTET
The evening was presented as A Concert For Alice And John Coltrane, marking the 10th anniversary since Alice died and 50th since John departed. It featured artists inspired by and who have worked with these two iconic jazz legends.
It’s Pharoah Sanders in the white shirt on this somewhat fuzzy photo. I promise.
Artist: Pharoah Sanders Quartet Date: 18 November 2017 Venue: The Barbican, London Notes: Sanders has worked with both Alice and John Coltrane, and it’s quite a scoop that The Barbican and EFG London Jazz Festival managed to bring the 77-year-old free jazz pioneer to the British capital. He might not walk so well these days, but it was a great experience to hear and see him perform. He moved in slow motion and would be resting on a chair whenever he didn’t play his saxophone. He had an impressive group of musicians around him - William Henderson, Oli Hayhurst and Gene Calderazzo - so even when he didn’t play, which felt like a fair bit, the music was still always of great quality. The softer moments were particularly beautiful and emotional, and Sanders played very well; rarely have I seen anyone perform with such an incredible feel for their instrument. He even danced a bit towards the end despite his difficulty walking, and some audience participation in terms of singing lifted the mood further. Rating: 8/10
Artist: Denys Baptiste Quartet Date: 18 November 2017 Venue: The Barbican, London Notes: A strong set inspired by the music from John Coltrane’s later years and aided by guest saxophonist Steve Williamson. The interplay between Baptiste on saxophone and piano player Nikki Yeoh was particularly special to witness. Rating: 7/10
Artist: Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet Date: 18 November 2017 Venue: The Barbican, London Notes: Really interesting to experience a harp being played in the context of a jazz quartet during this set mainly composed of music by Alice Coltrane. Apart from Bzhezhinska’s harp playing, Tony Kofi’s effort on saxophones was another highlight. Rating: 6.5/10

When a church is named after a jazz musician you know there's something more than music involved here. The spirituality with which John Coltrane immersed himself as exemplified by A Love Supreme, was just one of the drivers that helped make the saxophonist one of the greatest innovators of jazz. His later works were even more iconoclastic, embracing abstract themes and a conscious move towards free jazz, but still utilising time as propelled by the rhythmic powerhouse that was Elvin Jones and subsequently by the free jazz exponent Rashied Ali. So in pursuance of his previous album, 2010's Identity By Subtraction, Denys Baptiste has created a substantial paean to the late giant of saxophone. Eight of the ten numbers here are by Coltrane, the remaining two, "Neptune" and "Astral Trane" are Baptise originals, the former a planet missing from Coltrane's Interstellar Space, the latter continuing the space theme. Notably, the 'Trane numbers are mostly from his later works and aside from "After The Rain" are not frequently covered. Two of the guest musicians on this record, Steve Williamson and Gary Crosby are former members of the London based Jazz Warriors and Baptiste himself was a member of Crosby's Nu Troop. Another pivotal member of this ensemble is Nikki Yeoh who has been a stalwart of the British jazz scene for over twenty years. Additionally, bassist Neil Charles and drummer Rod Youngs both make noteworthy contributions. "Dusk Dawn" from Kulu Sé Mama opens the album with a majestic tenor fanfare and transitions through coruscating keyboard and even a brief foray into a reggae beat. "Ascent" is given an electric wah-wah treatment nearer to Miles than Trane. Ballads are represented by "Peace On Earth," from Concert In Japan and the elegant "Transition," underpinned by subtle obligato bass, evincing the epitome of modal tranquillity. The antithesis of its predecessor the Baptiste-penned "Neptune" is a maelstrom of questing agitation with both saxophonists sparring viscerally throughout. "Vigil" is groove-laden and embellished by echoey, ghostly keyboard culminating in a dynamic twin sax coda. In The Late Trane Baptiste succeeds in conjuring-up the spirit of Coltrane without reverting to clichéd simulacrum. This is a new and fresh sounding homage to the master, serving as a reminder as to just what a huge debt is owed to him.
