Recently thrifted these lovely ladies, Nikki, Teen Nikki, and Janet.

Poor Janet's missing her lower arm, but tbh it doesn't bother me. Some people have one arm, it's fine. Also the worker at goodwill pissed me off a little, condescendingly asking why'd I'd want a doll with one arm. Fuck you, that's why. She doesn't need an arm she's perfect.

These girls are so much harder to find than their white counterparts, I'm thrilled to have been able to get them. 🤎🖤

Animal Lovin' Barbie (and her Animal Lovin' Friends) was a late 80s release with a "safari" theme.

Each doll in the collection was paired with a small animal to hold and animal print clothing. The blonde Barbie, for example, has a pink leopard (?) print outfit with a baby panda.

You can very much see the 80s influence on the design, here. The gold netted scarf in her hair feels like such an 80s design I almost didn't bother looking up the actual release date of the toy.

This set featured Barbie's friend "Nikki", a character who only had this one appearance. There have been other Nikkis - most prominently, as Christie's sister, first a friend of Skipper's, then a friend of Barbie. However, this Nikki is visibly a different character, using the same face sculpt as Kira/Miko.

That is interesting in itself, but maybe not the most interesting part of the Animal Lovin' collection.

To me, that is Ken.

If you're not sure why, it is because this is the doll that Ken in Toy Story 3 was based on.

He was described as being based on a real Ken doll because, uh, "I don't think we could have come up with as outlandish or as garish as the real outfits that have existed over the years".

It's a little rude, but he's not wrong.

you were now on a flight going to australia, you had just won this year’s women’s oceania cup. the gold medal was hung around your neck, as you softly tapped the airplane’s table tray.

your team’s captain, kaitlin looked at you in amusement. you had missed your girlfriend after all, even though you saw her like last week.

“yes, cap?” you looked at her as she just shrugged with a soft smile.

“can’t wait to see your girlfriend, can you.” she commented as you chuckled at her words.

“i missed her after all.” she hummed, you were the youngest in the team being born in 2003.

“young love.” the skipper teased, as you softly shoved her. she had taken you under her wing when you made your debut for the senior team.

“oh, come on cap.” you sighed at her childish behavior, but she just held her hands up before quitting the teasing, which you were thankful for.

you were a bit knackered from the flight, but you were thankful that her parents made their way out to pick you up from the airport before heading to the game.

yes, you went straight to the semi-final’s match. was it a bad idea? considering that you were lacking sleep, it was. but it was worth it, it wasn’t something you wanted to miss, the matildas have created history for their country.

you had entered the stadium gaining attention from a few hockey-soccer fans, they stared at you in awe knowing your team’s recent win. the medal around your neck was proof of it, you had forgotten to take it off but it didn’t matter.

the kick off was starting soon, so you gave them soft smiles before heading to the family and friends section.

throughout the game, you were at the edge of your seat. the game was quite physical but it was expected seeing as this match would determine who would move to the finals.

you looked at the bench to see charli giving you a soft smile, before turning back to the field to concentrate.

the whistle had blew, signaling the end of the game. the game ended with england winning, it was 3-1. sam kerr, the matildas captain scored a banger of a goal in the 63rd minute, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to england.

you watched as the matildas looked a bit crestfallen, they wanted to bring home the trophy. the stadium had played strawberry kisses by nikki webster making you chuckle, the song had been stuck on your mind ever since it has been trending on tik tok.

as the matildas ended their lap around the pitch, a few went to the family and friends section, including charli. she wrapped her arms around you, as you gave her a shy smile.

“i missed you, baby.” charli said, as you hummed.

“i missed you, too.” she pulled away from the hug to only give you soft kisses on your jaw.

“i heard you also won with the team, send my regards to them.” charli said, as she gave you a wide smile. you nodded, pulling over the gold medal before placing it around her neck.

“y/n!” kyra yelled, as she ran before jumping. you caught her as charli laughed at her behavior. you looked ahead to see katrina looking at the two of you with a soft smile, but your attention was brought to harper.

“harps!” you said, placing kyra down as she laughed. harper had ran to you, gently hugging you as you bent to her level.

“that’s my girl.” you heard charli’s voice, as kyra laughed. you two, as kyra would say ‘a match made in heaven’. she was happy that her friend found someone to take care of her, and she was glad that it wasn’t anyone else.

I wonder… What are the meanings of the Barbie characters' names?

Barbie: Short for Barbara, which means "foreign."

Ken: Short for Kenneth, which means "handsome."

Midge: Short for Margaret, which means "pearl."

Teresa: "Summer" or "harvest."

Nikki: Derived from Nicole, which means "victory of the people."

Christie: Short for Christina, which means "Christian."

Summer: Self-evident.

Allan: "Handsome." (Just like Ken's name! No wonder they're friends!)

Brad: Short for Bradley, meaning "broad clearing"

Of course Barbie has had many other friends too, but these are enough to list for now.

Child Characters

Skipper: A word meaning the captain of a boat. Presumably it's a nickname, though how she got it and what her real name might be I don't know.

Stacie: Derived either from Anastasia, which means "resurrection," or Eustacia, meaning "fruitful."

Chelsea: The name of a part of London, which means "chalk wharf."

Todd: "Fox."

Kelly: "Bright-headed."

Shelly (Kelly's name in Europe): "Clearing on a bank."

Krissy: Derived from Christina, which means "Christian."

Tommy (Ken's little brother): Short for Thomas, which means "twin."

Ryan (Midge and Allan's son): "Little king."

Nikki (his little sister): Derived from Nicole, which means "victory of the people."

What are your thoughts on the characters in the Dreamhouse Adventures/Vlogs/TOM/BCBG universe? I'd love to hear them.

My faves are probably Malibu, Brooklyn, Daisy, Renee, and Rocki.

Also, apperantly the next movie will be about Teresa from something I saw on the wiki. I'm really hyped for a movie to focus on Teresa, who I feel like her and Nikki deserve better because outside of a few vlogs and scenes they are often just "barbie's friends" . Also shame Road Trip isn't canon! I thought it took place between bcbg's s2 and tom's s1.

I honestly feel really bad for all of Barbie's friends, especially Nikki, Renee, and Teresa. As time went on they really got pushed to the side, more Nikki and Renee than Teresa since they gave her a bigger part in the latest series (A Touch of Magic). I definitely agree with you that they are treated more as "Barbie's friends" instead of actually being characters. I feel like Nikki and Renee get this treatment the most. It's most disappointing in Nikki's case because she was probably the most fleshed out in terms of hobbies and personality. Teresa got a bit more in ATOM though so at least there's that. I'm honestly not a big fan of Daisy but I think it's cool that she's canonically LGBT+! Maybe during the next series or movie we'll get confirmation on what she identifies as (but I also know some people are unlabled and that's valid too!)

My favorite character is Ken. He's just so sweet and caring and will do anything for Barbie!! I hate that sometimes he just isn't given much to do. Not all the time, but sometimes. And we don't ever get to see his home life! What are his parents like? What does Ken do when he's not with Barbie?? I want to know!!

I think Brooklyn is a great addition to the lineup, though I wish she got more of her stuff outside of that short-lived web series (Barbie Life in the City). I like how passionate she is about putting on a good show, whether she's performing or behind the scenes! As for Malibu, I love her big heart but sometimes she's got too big a heart. There are times she should've been more assertive for herself like when Trey literally broke into her house. I think it got better I just can't remember right now (aside from ATOM I haven't rewatched any of the series lately).

I'm trying to stay optimistic about Teresa's movie, but after Skipper and Stacie's I am a little worried it's gonna be badly written or boring, maybe both. But I really like Teresa so I've got my fingers crossed it turns out good for her. I can't wait to get more insight into her character.

Yeah I'm still massively disappointed Epic Road Trip ended up not being canon. I thought at least ONE of those endings would tie into something but no, it looks like it was all self-contained. We finally got Karbie but then it all just gets erased and that romance gets dragged out EVEN MORE. Like seriously, why do the writers just refuse to let Barbie and Ken be together? Sure it would change their dynamic a bit, but they would still be Barbie and Ken, just now also a couple. I still headcanon ERT as part of the universe since it had time travel, so it supports my larger headcanon of that whole universe having constant timeline shenanigans. So in a way, Barbie and Ken are finally together in one of the timelines.

Also not including all of Barbie's siblings is a missed opportunity for a joke about how the roster keeps changing every decade.

Imagine Barbies of different eras having different sets of siblings. Margo's Barbie having Skipper, Tutti and Todd, since she's supposed to be the OG, but a modern Barbie having Skipper, Chelsea and Stacie.

One Barbie has baby sister Nikki and another Barbie being confused because she thought Nikki was Skipper's friend and other being confused because Nikki is an adult???

Pregnant Midge has a son named Ryan but another Midge has a crush on another Ryan?

That could've been so fucking funny.

Christie O’Neil was the first character in the Barbie line to be depicted exclusively as a Black woman.

(Francie had been released as both white and Black prior to Christie’s debut.)

Christie was a member of the Barbie lineup for several years - she debuted in 1968, and appeared more or less consistently until 2009, though some years she had considerably more appearances or greater prominence than others. After 2009, she has only appeared once, in an appearance in 2016.

As a result, I would tentatively say that she has been discontinued, though she could make an appearance again at any time. She certainly wouldn’t be the first character in the Barbie lineup to drop away for a while.

What makes me suggest that Christie may have been discontinued however is that her role in the lore has been largely replaced by Nikki.

Nikki debuted as a “friend of Teen Skipper” in 1996. In official canon, she was Christie’s younger sister.

However, in recent years, Nikki has been marketed as a friend of Barbie herself.

I have never watched Barbie Life In The Dreamhouse, but I believe this is canon in that series - that Nikki is a peer and friend of Barbie’s rather than Skipper’s.

I’m not sure why the change; maybe people found Nikki more marketable than Christie (did the name Christie age out of the Barbie demographic, perhaps?)
