Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla Recs!

Phew, it's been a minute since I've done one of these. Now back with a new design and additional fandom! Keep in mind that this rec list is my personal taste and yours might differ. I managed to read twelve fics despite the year I had and I think twelve fics for twelve months is a good number. (list below the cut)

Crossing the Abyss by @northernxstories - E - Multi - 23,6k

A beautifully written Space AU with polyamorous pairings. The relationships between the characters are just as interesting to read about as the bigger story of their journey. And I don't think I'm biased in the least, just because I made part of the art. This story is a whole treat!

Summary: The Kattegat was a unique vessel, designed to cross the expanse of space known as the Abyss. Once a ship enters the Abyss, the stresses surrounding the vessel increased exponentially and there was no known means of navigation in the starless void. Captain Bjorn Ragnarsson, known as Bjorn Ironside for his ability to survive seemingly impossible battles, has relied often on his brothers, Ivar, Ubbe and Hvitserk, and his sister, Gyda, to crew his ship.

Ivar was determined to defeat the impossible Abyss and has heard of a scholar who has invented a method of navigation that might be able to accomplish the task. Gyda and Ivar came up with a plan to get this information and if necessary, kidnap the scientist. Once on board the ship, the scientist is faced with unexpected challenges and rewards. However, before they can attempt the journey, Gyda must face her past.

October Rust by @bouncehousedemons - T - Ubbe/OFC - 1,9k

Wonderful imagery throughout the whole fic and and a great continuation of Salt of the Earth and Sea, which I also highly recommend to read! Summary: Ubbe assumes his lover has met a grisly demise, until an unexpected reunion with his brother proves otherwise.

polish the blood and the bruise by @underragingwaves - M - Hvitserk - 4,7k

Soldier Hvitserk, veterinarian Ubbe and a kitten. All very strong points to sell this fic, but please, it is so much more! If you like military themed stories, are a sucker for angst and family bonding this fic will hit all the right spots. I love it dearly and I'm sure so will you. It's also a nice crossover with Vikings: Valhalla characters.

Summary: Hvitserk came home from war, or so they tell him. Most days, he begs to differ about whether he ever made it out of the desert.

Reactions of your Kind by @ulfrsmal - E - Ubbe/Hvitserk - 3,1k

A bit of forbidden action in a hot spring and very nice mental images being painted along the way. Kudos to the lovely author!

Summary: Plagued by thoughts and desires he shouldn’t have had, Ubbe retreated to the hot springs outside of Kattegat… and had his bath interrupted by the one person he’d hoped wouldn’t see him so weak.

Sleepy Mornings by @ritual-unions - E - Ubbe/OFC - 7k

This is a story that reads like devouring your favorite food, while savoring it for as long as possible. Tender and electrifying and Ubbe is so very in character, I love it.

Summary: Winnifred lives a sheltered life as a Christian woman in King Alfred’s court. Not truly understanding the meaning of sexual pleasure her new husband, Ubbe Ragnarsson, is more than willing to show her the path.

I wish I knew how to quit you by @niishiki - E - Ivar/Heahmund - 1,2k

To make it short, if you love the naughty forbidden church sex, old/young pairing and Ivar being a little shit, this is a must-read.

Summary: Bishop Heahmund is a man of God - yet, he finds himself unable to resist temptation time and time again.

Til the light comes back by @naps4bats - T - Emma/Canute - 5,4k

I really liked how canon was translated into modern day AU and how well it worked! It's a lovely story with all the characters we like and don't like but still love to read about.

Summary: Emma and Canute enjoy a brief romance during a power outage. A couple of weeks later, they find their real lives intertwine.

Summer Days, Summer Nights by @encomium-emmae - T - Emma/Canute - 3.5k

An absolute lovely read for this pairing, set in a modern day AU. I like me some competitive Emma and Canute duo!

Summary: During a week of mandated vacation at a beach resort, Emma encounters a dark-haired stranger. Too bad he turns out to be a first-rate jerk.

Lost Amongst the Meadow by @emma-ofnormandy - M - Emma/Canute - 1,5k

A canon compliant piece that fits perfectly like a missing scene!

Summary: Canute wakes to an empty bed and sets out to find his wife in the early summer dawn.

Absolutely adore the OFC Edith and her chemistry with Godwin. This 'verse has a few more little stories on tumblr and they are definitely worth checking out in the authors #edith eadig tag!

Summary: Godwin of Wessex knew how to be useful. He’d been Aethelred’s advisor before he’d been Edmund’s; before the Danes had left he’d made himself invaluable to Canute, too. And now that the first wife had taken up residence, it looked as though she, too, was availing herself of Godwin’s offered expertise.

Godwin has also never been a man who needed help - but he won't be able to deceive the Queen on this particular matter alone.

I Will Join You by @shelivesinhermind - Gen - Leif & Liv - 641 words

Missing scene potential. Wonderfully written and the respect Liv deserved to receive after her death.

Summary: A funeral for Liv.

The End of the Beginning by toughtobeashamgod - T - Freydis/Harald - 1,1k

Directly set after Freydis kills Kåre and even though it's rated T, it's a little bit gory due to the description of blood everywhere. Nevertheless, this fic was a nice little read and fits seamlessly into the canon 'verse.

Summary: They had come so far into this new world, only for it to end so quickly.

1: Loner Deer - Joline

The singer is a new discovery of the last month. His voice and the simplicity of the melody hit me. I always love a bit of melancholy and I hear it super often when writing at the moment.

2: Dir en grey: The Fatal Believer

The complete opposite. The music of my alltime ♥Band always ensures wonderfully that I can scream out my pent-up rage inwardly 😈 At the moment this is the most played song.

3: Dzivia: Flower Maiden

This band / project has so much wonderful atmospheric music. Flower Maiden is one of my favorites. I listen to it while working or also while writing or sometimes to fall asleep.

What can I say, when I had a convo about AO3 having over 700 tags for Ikea and then someone mentions their shark plushie and I remember to have read at least 2 Viking fics where Ivar had this, I was so tempted and had to get his one out.

Can't believe my first Viking one is toddler Ivar but the one we talked about @pieces-by-me will be next.

The sun was still playing with the little dust particles in the air and Ivar just couldn’t grasp how he was expected to sleep, as if it wasn’t still way too bright. Not to mention way too silent since his father and brothers had gone on a camping trip that weekend. With their absence an eerie quietness had settled on the big country house of the Lothbroks; a quietness that his mother wasn’t able to fill.

Looking over to his brother’s empty bed, little Ivar frowned. Right now, he even missed Sigurd who was often so mean to him, even if Ivar didn’t do anything. At least nothing he was aware of. Ivar realised how his lip started to tremble and he felt like a baby. No wonder everyone was allowed to go on that trip except him. Ivar turned to his back to gaze at their room’s dark ceiling, which his big brother Ubbe had plastered with glow in the dark stars.

Oh, how he wished to be like Ubbe; strong and tall and handsome, the pride of both his father and mother, and yet humble and friendly, always happy to play and spend some time with his younger siblings.

Or Hvitserk, who drove their mother nuts by always needing to eat something yet being so slender, excelling in all kinds of sports at school and already having a reputation for his soccer skills.

Small Ivar sighed. Maybe they would even see Hvitserk on TV one day, playing for a famous soccer club.

Something cold slipped down his cheek, and he reached out for his plushie.

Burying his face in the often-washed fabric, Sharky instantly put a smile on Ivar’s face.

There was nothing more comforting than pressing your face to something that smelled so much like home and safety. It was the plushie’s size and the fact that Ivar could still hide his face behind it that made him feel safe, beautifully cut off from the world around him.

Remembering that this was what he had instantly used Sharky for when he got him, made Ivar cling even harder to the soft fur. His breathing got faster, thinking how embarrassed he had been that day when his father shoved him through IKEA in his wheelchair. Although his brothers had put in all their effort to shield him from the curious looks of the other kids at the children’s section by constantly fooling around the dreaded chair, Ivar was still aware of the pity in their parent’s eyes.

And then he saw him. Blåhaj.

This fierce and somehow still friendly looking shark plushie; huge and calmingly blue, which had always been Ivar’s favourite colour. Maybe because it reminded him of his father’s and brother’s eyes. They were also fierce. Fierce and reckless and Ivar adored them so much and wanted to be like them so much. And whenever he got frustrated and sad, Ubbe would bow down to him and say, “But Ivar, your eyes are just as blue as daddy’s or mine. You are just like us.” Then he would ruffle Ivar’s hair and though they both knew it was a lie, that Ivar would never be like them, he couldn’t help but feel a bit better.

Sharky and Ivar became inseparable and one day Aslaugh, in her wisdom, made Ragnar go buy another one because sometimes, well sometimes even fierce sharks needed a ride in the washing machine.

It was Sigurd, of course, who had to ask him how stupid he was to not realise that the brand new plushie he pressed to his chest after a horrible stomach bug was not Sharky No1. And then Sigurd had stayed near, although Ivar had wished to be alone with their mother to cuddle into her in his misery and make her sing the beautiful song that always calmed him down. Whenever he heard that melody, Ivar was able to sleep peacefully and dream wonderful things. He could feel himself running, playing football, climbing trees, and sailing on a huge ship with his dad. Ivar loved to dream about being a famous Viking, ever since his mom had read to him from the Edda, mentioning that she had fallen for his dad because he had always reminded her of a fearless Viking.

Most nights, though, Ivar’s dreams were dark.

Which was still better than the pain.

The pain in his useless legs made Ivar angry. And anger never led to something good, his mom said, and then a fight between her and his dad would inevitably ensue. His dad always telling him to concentrate on the pain and anger and use it. But Ivar didn’t understand what that was supposed to mean. And then his parents got frustrated and snappy, which made Sigurd be mean and Hvitserk and Ubbe disappear, making sure they had somewhere to be or playing outside, pretending not to hear anything. It was hurting all of them. His stupid legs hurt them all, not just him. He was hurting everyone. He was no good.

“No, no.” Ivar whimpered, not having realised he had gotten lost in his thoughts and fallen asleep.

“Hey, brother, no what?” he was asked by Ubbe, who had just returned with the rest of the bunch and didn’t miss a beat to look for their little brother.

“You won’t believe what happened!” an excited Hvitserk shouted, also storming into the room.

“Shhh, he’s asleep.” Ubbe smiled.

“Oh. But he is trembling.”

“Well, tuck him up, stupid,” Sigurd mumbled and let himself fell down on his own bed.

“Hey, who you calling stupid, baby brother? Better come over and make yourself useful,” Hvitserk mocked, and Sigurd rolled his eyes but came over and sat down on the ground next to Ivar’s bed, knowing very well what Hvitserk planned. After Ubbe had gotten another blanket and tucked Sharky and Ivar in up to their noses, Hvitserk carefully reached out under the warm fabric and tenderly massaged Ivar’s tiny, crippled legs.

It only took a few moments for the frown on Ivar’s forehead to vanish, the grip on his beloved Sharky loosening a bit. And then Ivar heard it. In his dream he heard the beautiful song his mother always sang for him.

Ubbe proudly looked at his two younger brothers, helping their baby brother in their own, unique ways.

And in the hallway, Ragnar leaned at his wife’s back, cupped her hips with his strong hands and lovingly whispered in her ear: “Now look at our little tribe, how they take care of each other, just like brothers are supposed to.”

“Yeah, you can thank me later for raising them this well,” Aslaugh answered with a smug smile.

And who knew, maybe one day Sharky would tell Ivar this wasn’t the first time Sigurd had sung for him.

Fic Rec for the Vikings Fandom

I decided to make a little list of completed fics I enjoyed so far and wanted to share them with you all! I know not everyone has the same taste, but maybe you find an author in here you want to read more of. This fic was one of the first I read on tumblr I think and I still love it so much, because of how well written and in character it is.  

Summary: Tired of watching his mother struggle after the disappearance of their father, eleven year old Ubbe with the help of his younger brother Hvitserk, set out on an adventure to find their father, the great Ragnar Lothbrok.

Summer Wine by underragingwaves (captainkilly) - M - 7,170 Words

I was pointed towards this fic and have not regret reading it! The author has a very unique way with words that will drag you in and hold you captive while reading- in the best way! 

Summary: Hvitserk takes more from the Alteciras raid and carries it all the way home.

I’ve got Dreams to Remember by serasvictoria - E - 8,244 Words

You’re in for a treat with this fic! Incubus!Hvitserk and lots of fun in a well-written story that’ll melt your brain.

Summary: A certain young man keeps showing up in your very x-rated dreams.

A Beautiful Chaos (Pride Month ‘21) by punkrocknpearls - E -  21,353 Words

Normally not an RPF fan, but the author is so talented I can’t not read it! This story is part of a whole ‘verse, that you can find here.

Summary: finding someone who can help you find your inner wildness is sometimes the best way to find your inner peace.

Cruor and Conquests by quantumlocked310 - E - 3,024 Words

The author has a very talented way of painting pictures in your mind while reading. This one might be a bit gory, but it’s very hot too which makes up for the bloody part a lot.

Summary: You and your love, Hvitserk, rejoice together in the throws of passion after a gory and glorious battle.

Mine & No One Else’s by deans-ch-ch-cherrypie - T - 3,538 Words

With the author being a Hvitserk fan, I certainly love that she also writes Ubbe well! And damn, possessive Ubbe is just very nice, okay?

Summary: You’ve caught the attention of an insistent earl and the situation is testing your best friend Ubbe’s patience.

Kiss You Godless by pomegranates-and-blood - E - 8,535 Words

Very, very hot sub! Hvitserk and the angst is chef’s kiss!

Summary: Hvitserk agreed to a no-strings-attached arrangement without thinking twice about it. Now, almost eight months into it, he finds himself lingering for too long on the curve of your smile and the sweetness of your voice. It probably means nothing, right?

Of Sniffles and Broken Bones by niishiki - T -  17,052 Words

Really, really loved this story! The bonds between all four brothers and how they interact is written so well and even though it’s a modern AU they’re all in character.

Summary: A short 4-Chapter fic about the Sons of Ragnar being sick or injured.

💜💜Klaus Character Studies! 💜💜

I’m not going to pretend Klaus isn’t my favorite character. I couldn’t convince anyone of it even if I tried. Most of my recs for the @tuafeedbackfest are probably for fics about Klaus, but these ones are united in being very interested in taking a very close look at why and how Klaus is the way he is, how he thinks - in depth looks into who he is as a person.

I love this fic so so much, it’s always going to be a classic rec from me. Snippets of Klaus’ life, told by Ben, starting from pre-series and going through the end of the first season. It’s got a lot of insights and angles that are so smart and good and was pretty formative for my feelings about Klaus and Ben’s relationship. Not always liking each other or getting along, but shot through with a painful sort of love.

When he can, Klaus enacts the artistry of charisma, indulges his unending, clawing devotion for the grounding comfort of human connection, uses the ceiling of his practice and resources to his advantage and shares the high with others. The older he gets, the more he needs to carry and the less he has to spare.

From four different outsider’s perspectives, at different points in Klaus’ life, mainly to do with his drug use. Well-written in a way that feels almost delicate, or maybe that’s how Klaus himself feels. It engages with the contradictions of Klaus in a neat way - he’s friendly, but so so lonely. Each of these onlookers is able to see real truths about him, but we know there is so much going that still remains hidden. 

Fly me to the moon by @niishiki​

Luther can't sleep and finds a restless Klaus. Deciding to help his brother through this worst of his withdrawal, Luther shows him the stars.

Really lovely post-apocalypse midnight bonding session for Luther and Klaus! They both have their own issues to overcome, and in this sleepover-like atmosphere, they are both able to just be honest and find some comfort in it.

Her brother is still so jumpy for somebody so entrenched in the macabre, voluntarily or not, and when his shoulders drop from what had been a jolt of anxious tension as he recognizes her and relaxes, Klaus connects to Allison with imploring green eyes.

"Can I help you?" he says, and he has the nerve to sound a little bit offended at the interruption as though Allison is the intruder in the situation instead of the other way around.

Didja notice this is the same author as the outsider pov one? There’s some similarities here - the good writing style, for one, and it similarly deals with Klaus navigating social interactions. This one is after some not-apocalypse and features sober Klaus and sibling bonding!

The scars across his body mark a treasure map of mistakes. Tiny shrapnel scars and rosy-red roadrash, a lifetime of being thrown to the ground by Academy training and the real world. The ivory line tracing across his jaw, almost invisible. The tattoos and the traintracks, the pockmarked puncture wounds scattered like a horrifying constellation across his body.

He’s so tired.

Starts pre-series, but mainly tracks Klaus’ thought process throughout the season. It’s got some really neat insights, picking up on all the right things that don’t get delved into as much on the show but that always intrigue me to think about.

5 A crackship I love? thx to one throwaway line in dark akropolis war we know now John Constantine bent over for King Shark and I’m here for all that monster smut!

6 the last thing I read that made me laugh? I almost wanted to say I can’t remember but then I remembered I recently reread ‘Saint Jim’s Magic Cock’ by @niishiki (I mean look at the title??? Aren’t you laughing yet? Also, it’s freaking good! Like you randomly go back to it after months good). 

7 the last thing I read that made me cry? I actually never cry while reading (or writing for the matter) but one fic that almost made me was ‘In the end’ by @miscreantahead. That one hit me real hard when reading it for the first time. 

8 Bed sharing or roommates Au? Bed sharing. There is just something about the intimacy of being forced to occupy the same constricted space, feeling each and every tiny movement.
