Had a 30 minute italki lesson, during which I attempted to use recently learned grammar structures ずにはいられない and わけじゃない
Reviewed difficult kanji
Did a Renshuu vocab quiz
Read an article on NHK Easy
Spoke to my colleague in Japanese

oh hey, when exr translation has lwj say that wn “always felt sorry for you” (re: wn telling jc about the core transfer), it obviously sounds like wn felt it was unfair for wwx to have suffered in secret. the word used is 过意不去 aka “to feel apologetic; to feel sorry” and i’m not sure if it’s just “to feel sorry” or “to feel sorry for”. either way, the japanese edition has 申し訳なく思う which is to be sorry about something; so it’s not that wn felt sorry for wwx, but rather, he’s sorry for talking despite wwn telling him not to (which is what wwx fumes about in the very next line)

14:42 | I've came to conclusion that I overplanned so need to reschedule some things and slow down. As for today, I'm revising chapter 38 of Minna no Nihongo and some kanji.
Besides, it's too hot and stuffy to live or think.

Today, my nihongo no sensei asked me which was my "fave character" from Bleach. So, of course, I had to mention Byakuya. The thing is, that I've been learning kanji for some weeks now and even if I'm not expected to learn more than what she is giving us for N5 level, I really enjoy learning as many as I can. That includes N4 and N3 level ones (they aren't that hard, believe me). Therefore, I was able to write down Byakuya's name fully in Kanji: " 朽木白哉 ".
Now, because I'm a sucker for hidden meanings, we already know his name has a special (as Hisana does) one. The "Kuchi / 朽木" stands for "decay" and Ki/木 means "tree". As for his name, Byakuya/ 白哉 the combination forms "midnight sun" or "white light in the dark" or even "white night" (pretty abstract, but still beautiful and precise for his Hakuteiken technique/白帝剣).
Now, the little coincidence (it might be just a coincidence, believe me I'm just a beginner) I found is in the last kanji of his name : 哉. It is also used with the combination: 善哉 which both mean "well done" (pretty interesting if you think about Byakuya's obsession for perfection too) but also "Zenzai". Zenzai is a soup, that varies with every region. But in general is made of Azuki beans. And do you remember who wanted to cook Shiratama Zenzai for Byakuya in the "Honey Dish Rhapsody" novel? Yes, his beloved sister Rukia! 🥺💖
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If it's just a coincidence I don't care, is still cute :P (But we all know how much Kubo likes to play with this hidden little easter eggs)

Turtles Catches Up With Old GMMTV: The Bad Buddy Rewatch Edition, Part 0.5 -- The BBS Meta Series Preamble
[What’s going on here? After joining Tumblr and discovering Thai BLs through KinnPorsche in 2022, I began watching GMMTV’s new offerings -- and realized that I had a lot of history to catch up on, to appreciate the more recent works that I was delving into. From tropes to BL frameworks, what we’re watching now hails from somewhere, and I’m learning about Thai BL's history through what I’m calling the Old GMMTV Challenge (OGMMTVC). Starting with recommendations from @absolutebl on their post regarding how GMMTV is correcting for its mistakes with its shows today, I’ve made an expansive list to get me through a condensed history of essential/classic/significant Thai BLs produced by GMMTV and many other BL studios. My watchlist, pasted below, lists what I’ve watched and what’s upcoming, along with the reviews I’ve written so far. Today, I'm preambling a series of posts that I'll be publishing throughout November and December about my OGMMTVC rewatch of Bad Buddy and Our Skyy 2 x Bad Buddy x A Tale of Thousand Stars.]
After nearly a month of rewatching Bad Buddy and Our Skyy 2 x Bad Buddy x A Tale of Thousand Stars -- TWICE, holy shit! -- I'm finally putting pen to paper on a four-part series of BBS meta that I've been looking forward to writing nearly all year.
Before I start the series, I'd like to offer a not-so-quick preamble of how I got here. Before the birth of this Old GMMTV Challenge project, I was flitting and floating, enjoying a dalliance with Thai BLs here and there, while still mostly watching Japanese BLs, my entrée into overall Asian BL content. I started with KinnPorsche in the late summer of 2022, picked up The Eclipse after that on the recommendation of a dear mutual (@the-nihongo-adventure, I hope you're well!), and then picked up A Tale of Thousand Stars in order to prepare for my first live GMMTV fandom experience on Tumblr in early January with Moonlight Chicken.
That was the exact order by which I came to Bad Buddy, which I watched for the first time in January and February of this year, after MLC ended. I was so blown away. I thought I was a drama girlie before Bad Buddy, but it was like Bad Buddy had made me see facets of drama-making that I had never known or appreciated before. The act structure of episode 10 alone just sat me the hell down, let alone the brilliance of the overall story arc vis à vis Pat, Pran, the themes and motifs of intergenerational trauma and filial piety that I related to, down to my bones and bloodstream, and the millions of layers on this show that we could spend a lifetime parsing.
My first piece about Bad Buddy, published in February, is the post on Tumblr that I am the most proud of writing, my first post (as a relatively new Tumblr-ite) that I took days and drafts to work on. In that post, I worked out what I saw as the major theme of intergenerational trauma dominating the story landscape of Bad Buddy, framed in what I interpreted as a reflection of David Hegel's thesis-antithesis-synthesis modality of change in philosophy and art, as most poignantly reflected in Herman Hesse's Siddhartha.
In other words, y'all: I became a BBS girlie, lol.
And, partly in conversation with @miscellar, and partly by way of the just TREMENDOUS, TREMENDOUS amount of meta on Bad Buddy on Tumblr (whew, the MASTERS, @telomeke, @grapejuicegay, @dribs-and-drabbles, @airenyah, @dudeyuri, @dimplesandfierceeyes, oh my gosh, so many many more, I can't list them all!), I came to learn that Bad Buddy was a home to so many other themes, motifs, and references that honestly, my mind was blown.
For me, personally, it was ABL Sensei's original post on the newer landscape of GMMTV BLs answering to Thailand's seminal BLs, as well as @miscellar's post on BL tropes referenced and reshaped in Bad Buddy, that served as the original inspiration for the creation of the Old GMMTV Challenge project.
I needed to watch older Thai BLs to understand the landscape of how this genre was born and how it's changed and developed over time, to truly and deeply understand the impact that Bad Buddy had on me personally and artistically, and how it stands in the echelon of the Thai BL genre today, particularly by way of the influence of BBS's director, the brilliant Aof Noppharnach. I needed to know about the food that fed Bad Buddy to make Bad Buddy what it was as its own seminal drama.
So, after 32 shows and movies watched on the OGMMTVC list, I get to this moment -- my turn, my time, to pound out some BBS meta, knowing what I know now about the history of the Thai BL genre up to 2021-2022.
My four-part series of BBS meta will focus on the following:
Part 1: A look at how previous GMMTV BLs spoke to Bad Buddy in their own development, and to Bad Buddy itself. I'll take a look at the BL tropes that Bad Buddy references and reshapes. I'll touch upon Theory of Love, A Tale of Thousand Stars, Still 2gether, and many more older shows. I'll also take a look at themes in BBS that I didn't touch upon in my first BBS thesis from February 2023.
Part 2: In conjunction with my Big Meta series on themes of pain in Asian dramas, I want to take a look at the themes of pain, trust, and separation (sometimes voluntary, sometimes forced) in some Asian dramas, including Bad Buddy, Still 2gether, A Tale of Thousand Stars, Until We Meet Again, and I Promised You The Moon.
Part 3: I have had the extremely GREAT luck to engage in lengthy discussion about Bad Buddy with a number of Asian Tumblr bloggers, to discuss how we related to BBS as Asians, and what themes we could analyze from our culturally attuned and lived-in perspectives. In this meta, I'll take a look at Asian cultural touchpoints including inherited and intergenerational trauma; competition amongst one's peers; the nature of secret-keeping and what's "acceptable" to explicitly talk about in Asian family systems; and much more. (I may need to split this post into two, we'll see!)
Part 4: I'll offer some thoughts, based off of the Pain, Trust, and Separation Big Meta and the BBS Asian Cultural Touchpoints meta, on Pran leaving for Singapore, and how Thai vs. international audiences may interpret his decision to leave Thailand for two years.
I'm late to the BBS meta game, but there's no time like the present to catch the hell up. I'm happy to celebrate Bad Buddy's two-year anniversary this way, and I'm really excited that the OGMMTVC allows me to do so.
Part 1 drops later this week. Meet me at Wai's bar for a chit-chat -- and thank you for reading along!
(Tagging @dribs-and-drabbles by request! If you'd like to be tagged, please let me know! <3 )
[Here's the complete OGMMTVC watchlist as it stands today. For a more accurate look at what I've watched, please mosey over to this link!

How to use やっぱり ( = yappari ) (Mini Lesson) – Maggie Sensei
Expressions, JLPT N2, Mini Lesson from No.124
How to use やっぱり ( = yappari ) (Mini Lesson)
December 14, 2010 23 Comments
Tumblr media
マギー先生の頭の中をスキャンしてみたら…
= Maggie Sensei no atama no naka wo sukyan shite mitara…
= We “scanned” Maggie’s brain and…
Today’s word is 「やっぱり! 」=「Yappari! 」
It is a colloquial way of saying やはり = yahari and it means “I thought so!”  or  “I knew it! “
If something happens as we suspected, we say “やっぱり” (=Yappari)!
1) We say it when we hear something that we had expected we’d hear or are unsurprised to hear.
Ex. 「マギーは彼が好きなんだって。」
=Maggie wa kare ga sukinan datte.
=I heard Maggie liked him.
「やっぱり!」/「やっぱりね!」
= Yappari! /Yappari ne!
= I knew it!
***
Ex. やっぱり、犯人は彼だったんだ。
= Yappari hannin wa kare dattannda.
= I knew he was the criminal.
***
Ex. やっぱり思った通りだ。
= Yappari omotta toorida.
= I knew it. / That’s exactly what I thought.
***
Ex. やっぱりそうだったの?
= Yappari soudatta no?
= I knew it!(It’s a rhetorical question in Japanese but actually means you expected something.)
***
Ex. やっぱりマギーは来なかったね。
= Yappari Maggie wa konakatta ne.
= As we expected, Maggie didn’t come, huh?
2) When you assure your opinion or simply emphasize your opinion, really, indeed
Ex. やっぱり彼はかっこいいよね。
= Yappari kare wa kakkoiiyone.
= He is really cool! (Just as I had thought.)
Ex. やっぱりあなたじゃなくちゃだめ! (female talk)
= Yappari anata ja nakucha dame!
= It has to be you. (Just as I have been thinking.)
Ex. やっぱり日本語を勉強するならマギー先生のサイトだよね。
= Yappari nihongo wo benkyou suru nara Maggie Sensei no saito dayone.
= If you want to study Japanese, it has to be Maggie Sensei’s site! (As I have thought.)
3) When you change your mind, on second thought
Ex. ねえ、スタバに行かない? やっぱりやめた!明日、試験があるから勉強しないと。
= Nee, sutaba ni ikanai?  Yappari yameta! Ashita shiken ga aru kara benkyou shinaito.
= Hey, you wanna go to Starbucks? On second though, I won’t go. I have exams tomorrow so I have to study.
And if you change your mind again,
Ex. やっぱり行く!!試験なんてどうでもいいや。
= Yappari iku!! Shiken nante doudemo iiya.
= I change my mind. I AM going! I don’t care about exams.
Note :
やはり = yahari
Tumblr media
There is even more casual form of やっぱり=yappari
Tumblr media
Ex. やっぱりそうか ! ( = Yappari souka! ) = I knew it.
Tumblr media
Ex. やっぱりね!(=Yappari ne!)  I knew it. I thought so.
:rrrr: やっぱね! = Yappane.
Ex. やっぱり夏はビールだよね。
= Yappari natsu wa biiru dayone!
=  There is nothing better than beer in the summer.
Tumblr media
=Yappa natsu wa biiru ssho! (very colloquial)
So can you read what in my brain?
*遊 = yuu /  遊ぶ = asobu = to play
*食 = shoku / 食べる=taberu = to eat
*休 = kyuu / 休む= yasumu  =  to get rest
*秘 = hi = 秘密 = himitsu = secret
マギー先生より = Maggie Sensei yori = From Maggie Sensei
私の秘密知りたい?
= Watashi no himitsu shiritai?
= Do you want to know my 秘密 = himitsu = secret?? ***
Will you be my Patron?
I appreciate your support!  サポートありがとう!
This rules. I'm gonna learn Japanese and go to Nihon. I hope this site is a good resource for me!!!!!!

Day 2 (18/11/23)🌟
Tumblr media
a pic of my bias in seventeen because why not
hi again! even if it's inly 5 pm in my country i'd call it a day. tonight I didn't sleep well (no way🫠) because of a mosquito and also because i had to wait for my roommate to return home. so this morning i woke up very tired and upset for some rent issues. we took the subway all the way down to the nearest bill office (idk if it is a word in english) to complain about this. 💸 then my roommate left for his hometown and now i'll spend the weekend alone. i was quite happy to relax and take a short time of rest in solitude but then i started feeling mentally and physically drained about this and that and i ended up with nothing done. I JUST WANT TO SLEEP 🛏
Tumblr media
however, i decided not to study anything uni-related today bc it would be unproductive, i think i will revise something after dinner but nothing more
Language things:
JAPANESE: i completed one lesson about some basic counter suffixes but I want to practice more because there are so many!! i am finally pretty confident with my N5 kanji knowledge and when I hear a new word in the minna no nihongo lessons on yt i always try to write it in kanji characters. learning kanji makes my chinese mandarin studies way easier even if japanese grammar is more similar to korean language. however in today's lesson i found a word which i remember from the sushi restaurant the other day いらっしゃいませ which means welcome! 🥢 i've also learned how to say things such as i have been studying japanese for two months ( 私は2ヶ月日本語を勉強しま。)🇯🇵
KOREAN: i continued to study some grammar points from the seventeen's blog in Budapest, this time i've learned A-(으)ㄴ 것 같다 and V- 는 것 같다 to express a guess and i watched a video by ggomi's school on yt, she's really good and her explanations are very clear even though they're in korean. recently i've started to write in a journal some simple sentences about my daily life, my feelings and everything that comes in mind and i think my korean writing skills are slowly improving. also, i like to test my speaking skills with papago translator to see if my pronounciation is correct (at the moment i'm not ready yet to talk with native speakers on hellotalk etc) 🇰🇷
i did not study chinese today because I have to retain the things i've learned and also because I think I have to work on my pronounciation so im planning to watch some content I like such as a cdrama or stuff🇨🇳
i'm a bit hungry now but today I ate pasta with pesto and i burnt my tongue while tasting the pasta to see if it was ready so i don't know if i'll be able to eat something lol
also i don't know if im going out with my friend tonight im too tired for this (im talking like an old lady👵)

On Saturday, me and my 72-year-old mother and my agoraphobia and my OCD and my social anxiety and my veganism and my extremely rudimentary language skills are going to Japan! AAAAAAAAAAAA! Via Dubai, where I will do my very best impression of a heterosexual who is not carrying prescription brain meds, has never had gay porn on her phone, and has no strong opinions about anything! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
My brother moved to Japan in early March 2011, with classic timing, scaring the hell out of my parents in the process (Osaka is nowhere near where the earthquake hit, but we didn't know that). I've never been, on account of the above factors. This is the first time the borders have been open to tourists since my dad died, and my mum can't go on her own.
I have enough Covid vaccinations to satisfy border control, which is not enough for any actual immunity, a situation I consider insane and terrifying. Tests and masks, tests and masks. I'm actually on the SARS chapter of David Quammen's 'Spillover' right now, because I think knowing stuff is understanding stuff and I don't know how to be happy. My mum at least has had a recent booster.
Gomennasai, Igirisujin desu - I'm sorry, I'm English
Chotto no Nihongo ga hanasemasu - I can speak a little Japanese
Nihongo ga amari hanasemasen - I don't really speak Japanese
Niku to sakana to tamago wa tabemasen - I don't eat meat, fish and eggs
Kore wa yasai desu ka? - Is this vegetables?
Kyou kara saraishyuu made Japan Rail Pass o ni mai onegaishimasu - Two Japan Rail Passes from today until the week after next, please.
