For a little over a year now I've been slowly amassing a collection of ninja turtle books and I wanna talk about some of them. Picture books, joke books, novelizations, coloring and activity books... For all different iterations and all different reading levels.
Well ok they are pretty much just kids books let's be real, but some of them are really great and it's nice to see some new adventures. I've loved ninja turtles for as long as I can remember. Watched the '80s cartoon when I was young, read the comics, caught '03 in it's first season and was hooked immediately, and have pretty well kept up with everything since, with the exception of IDW (SOON.) These books have given me a new appreciation to the TMNT.
At first I just wanted to get my hands on some '03 books, but I was at the same time falling back in love with the '87 show, and books related to that series ended up being a lot easier to find. There's new adventures, some adapted episodes of the cartoon, some from Archie comics...
A rap song to fight drugs, and a little book adapting the first live action film with the '87 boys (Raphael defenestration and all, LOOK AT MY BOY THEY KILLED HIM)
I wasn't really planning to get so many, but THESE 4 delightful books really had an effect on me.
I'll probably make another post just about these 4 books sometime because I have so much to say on them! There is such a charm about them and they've changed how I think about the '87 and Archie turtles. They also act as a prequel series to either! Each book focuses on a different turtle. You see them in some of their pre-series naivete, learning and exploring and joking around. It's really no surprise they're so good, given the author, Stephen Murphy, was a primary writer for TMNT Adventures (Archie) and Tales of the TMNT. '03 girlies, he co-authored "Sons of the Silent Age" in Mirage and was a writer for several '03 episodes!
Anyway, after reading these, I really started searching.
It's so interesting to me to read these characters in this form, from different authors with their own ideas about the turtles.
There's several unique stories in the '03 books, with wonderful illustrations. These goofballs just shine even in the silliest of the adventures. Stephen Murphy, again, shows up here as an author of '03 books. I really love how he writes the boys.
'12 tends to just be episode adaptations, although I haven't actually read the novels I have yet. '12 books have been pretty easy to find so they have not been high on my priority list, but I try to grab ones that look like unique tales!
Mikey's Nightwatcher Scrapbook was so adorable, one of my favorites! Newspaper clippings, date and time stamped sightings and attempts at catching/talking to the elusive Nightwatcher... It's very fun and endearing! The Rise novels are just retellings of episodes, but each story is told by a different character! It's not much, but it's a cute detail.
finding coloring books is HARD, and even harder is finding one that's not been used. The joke book is full of the most garbage jokes but I had some fun torturing friends with it. :3
The coloring books in particular I'd like to scan sometime to share. I remember seeing '03 coloring books around all the time while the show was running; now you're liable to find yourself in a bidding war for one! (against me)
These books have become so important to me and I wanna talk about them more so I might just start taking one every now and then and ranting about it in a post. I have about 80 various books now, and a decent list of more I'm on the hunt for.
#tmnt#tmnt books#book rant#thank you for reading me be excited about children's books#There was actually one book for '03#whose synopsis sounded suspiciously like the plot of an '87 book#so I bought it and low and behold#Steven Murphy is the author of both#there were only some key similarities#not a wholesale copy of his own previous story#and natch both are good#anyway books are great kids#all kinds of books

Greensleeves Chapter Eight: The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret
Fandom: Baldur's Gate 3 Warnings: N/A Wordcount: 4.1k
As the party find a routine, things seem to settle down. Then Xaph learns what killed that boar. And what's bothering Gale. She shares her own burdens.
Read on AO3 Previous Chapter | Next Chapter
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gale and Xaph don’t get their quiet moment, not for over a week. Their night watch schedules don’t line up, and the House of Hope has provided them with enough food for over a tenday so there’s no need to forage. No one protests when Gale cements himself as camp cook, and he listens attentively when Xaph talks to him about mushrooms, when Wyll shows him how to decoratively cut fruit as though for presentation. Even Lae’zel starts to wean off her gith rations. The party figures out their hierarchy. Xaph has slipped into a leadership role. She manages to keep them on task and she knows how to navigate the land. She’s smart, and she has good instincts, and it’s working so far. Wyll is invaluable, a seasoned adventurer who does an excellent job of keeping tempers below boiling point. More than once he has to separate Lae’zel and Shadowheart like spitting cats, and that’s where Astarion comes in. He and Shadowheart bitch to one another in Elvish and they’re as secretive about their personal lives as ever but it gives them an outlet and no one can begrudge them that. Xaph takes Lae’zel to a dead tree and lets her take out her feelings on it. Joins her, sometimes. The rift between races is eased, if not yet quite erased, and the party at large begins to find their rhythm. The nightwatch rota is set and solid. The only true rule is not to schedule Lae’zel and Shadowheart together, not until they burn through the fighting frictions between them in daylight hours. Everyone has learned how to erect and collapse their own tents, though it still takes Astarion a while, and that rest time is precious and shouldn’t be wasted. Time spent around the campfire feels precious too. It’s around their food they begin to understand each other and build trust.
One night, Xaph is restless. She’s caught in limbo,not quite awake and not quite asleep. The worm is exploring her brain and she just can’t get comfortable. Eventually, she wedges an arm under her head so her horns don’t dig into the ground and closes her eyes against the stars, determined that the worm is not going to take another night of sleep from her. In the end, this struggle might be a good thing. She’s only just barely asleep when she senses it. A presence. Not far away, either. Close. An animal, perhaps, tempted by the smell of food. A light-footed goblin scout. A vampire, she remembers the exsanguinated boar. When her eyes open, she’s still not sure what she’s looking at. Astarion. Pale as the moon against the night sky. His red eyes look down into her green ones, both sets equally surprised. Fangs an inch away from her throat.
“Shit.” He knows that she knows, but Xaph acts before he does. She moves instinctively, bringing a leg up to hook it over his hip and rolling until she has him pinned and her arm is braced against his collarbone. When he lifts his hands her tail snaps forward and smacks his wrist and he obediently holds his hands above his own head. He knows she’s stronger than him. “If you wanted to be on top, darling, you only had to ask,” the words are familiar, every jab he ever has is said as though he and his combatant are between sheets, but the tone is a little off, “Listen, it’s not what it looks like.”
“It looks like you’re a vampire.” Xaph says plainly.
“Alright, so maybe it’s a little bit what it looks like.” Astarion admits. Is he…pleading? Desperation does not suit him. “I wasn’t going to hurt you.” Xaph eases her weight off him, and again his eyes widen in surprise as he scrambles into a seated position.
“Talk.” Does she trust him? Yes, yes, she thinks she does. He’s scared, and he’s still close enough that she can grab and overpower him.
“I just needed…well, blood.”
“That was your kill, wasn’t it? That boar.” She does trust him. Trusts him to have her back in a fight, and that’s what she needs.
“I’m not some monster. I feed on animals. Boar, deer, kobolds. Whatever I can get.”
“It’s not enough, is it?” Xaph asks, “You couldn’t even hide that boar.”
“The pig was fucking heavy!” Astarion cries, taking offence and throwing his hands out, but he sighs. “You’re right. I’m too slow right now. Too weak. If I had just a little blood, I could think clearer. Fight better. Please.” Yes, he’s pleading. She doesn’t know how to feel about it. A strange sensation charges through Xaph’s veins. He’s opening his mind to her, like Lae’zel had. He’s opening up. She was starting to think he couldn’t do that. He’s letting her in. She accepts, but tentatively. Letting him lock her out at any moment, but he doesn’t. Their worms connect with only minimal squirming. The memories are full of cracks and they shake. Scared. She’s seeing through his eyes again and none of the faces are clear, but there are dark eyes at the centre of all of them. Commanding. And he’s compelled. He can’t resist. But he doesn’t get to choose what he eats.
“That’s who you were talking about. The one who liked to play with people. Your master.” Xaph says, hushed. His ears relax, the very tips drooping. She didn’t know elf ears could move like that. Never paid enough attention to them, she supposes.
“Yes. Yes, I ate whatever disgusting vermin my master picked. So you can see why I’m slow to trust you,” he hesitates here, as though he’s not fully comfortable with his next words, “But I do trust you. And you can trust me.” Xaph watches him. She keeps her hands on her knees, palms up and open.
“I do,” she tells him, and she knows she does, “I believe you.”
“Thank you.” It’s the most genuine gratitude she’s ever heard from him. “Do you think you could trust me just a little further? I only need a taste. I swear.” It makes sense. To feed from her, asleep and unknowing or awake and willing, would expend far less energy than chasing something and having to hold it down until it stops moving. He’s hungry. He’s in pain. He’s in need.
“Alright.” Xaph says eventually, and he’s surprised all over again. He’d expected her to shove a stick through his ribs, slice him open with his own dagger. The surprise pinches Xaph’s stomach. How long has it been since he was trusted? “But not a drop more than you need. I rather like life, whatever of it I’ve got left.”
“Really?” There, for just a moment, his confidence falters. The smooth veneer that covers his words shows a single hairline crack. “Of course,” he recovers quickly, “Not one drop more.”
“What do I do?” Xaph asks. Astarion gestures towards the bedroll,
“As you were. More comfortable, you see.”
She obliges. She has the upper hand should things go south. She lies on her back, as she had been, arm wedged under her head. Astarion hovers above her, going back to his own pose. He’s high on his knees, and each hand presses into the ground by her shoulders. She has the upper hand she has to remind herself. She’s not used to feeling like prey. The fangs are like shards of ice in her neck. Cold isn’t a familiar experience. Tiefling blood runs hellfire hot. It doesn’t hurt, not exactly, but it’s not pleasant either. Numb pressure on her neck, and a draining sensation. She can feel her pulse in the roof of her mouth, and then it starts to recede. To fade. Lightheadedness punches in. She punches him, pushing her fists into his shoulders until he detaches himself from her neck. He’s out of breath, blood dribbling from the corner of his mouth. Xaph’s blood. She can’t say she’s ever experienced this before. Her hand goes to her throat and finds twin puncture wounds, just like that boar. Her hand comes away coated red.
“Amazing,” that single word carries more weight than every syrupy pick-up-line he’s tried combined, “My mind is finally clear. I feel strong. I feel…happy.”
“I should hope so,” the night air is freezing against the bite marks, “I’m glad I could help.”
“Raphael was right about one thing. Your heart does bleed something awful. Not that I’m complaining.”
“I look forward to seeing you fight. Maybe you’ll win our next duel.” Xaph says, and it’s refreshing to hear him laugh. She wonders if her blood will bring colour to his cheeks.
“If you’ll excuse me. You’re invigorating, but I need something more filling,” Astarion says this somewhat dismissively, but he doesn’t turn away from her until she nods and settles back on her bedroll. Maybe now she’ll sleep. She sits up again to retrieve the blanket that had been tossed to the side when she’d launched herself at Astarion, and she sees that he hasn’t fully left yet. His back is to her, but his head is turned to the side so she can see his lips moving when he says,
“This is a gift, you know. I won’t forget it.”
***
Gale doesn’t sleep any more than Xaph does, pain chewing at his ribs and the muscles of his chest. Eventually, he rolls over and tugs the flap of his tent open to let the sunrise in. He can’t bring himself to move any further, not yet, so he lies on his stomach and lets the sun warm him up. Watches the rays of light dapple through the leaves on the trees. Xaph is already awake. She’s tied a burlap sack that must be full of rags and leather scraps to a branch, and is practicing with her bow. She’s still working on getting her arm in, and she can be found practicing most early mornings. Her stance is impeccable. She’s barefoot, as she tends to be in camp, her trousers slung low on her hips. She isn’t wearing a shirt, just her smallclothes. Red fabric that covers her chest and little else. Gale can see every muscle in her back moving, tensing, releasing. She’s strong. Could she lift him, if she wanted? The pink light of dawn is tinting her skin lilac. The skin of her back, her arms, is fascinating. There are raised lines, small spots. Freckles everywhere. Everywhere? No. Don’t. He has to move. He can’t lie here and watch her and let his mind wander. He manages to pull himself up into a seated position without making too much noise, though several muscles he’d forgotten about clench in complaint.
Astarion enters the picture, the frame made by the blue fabric of the tent. His skin shines in the sun. His shirt is unlaced, his sleeves rolled to his elbows. He must say something, because Xaph turns her head to look at him as she lets her last arrow fly. Astarion gestures, and she raises her bow again though she frowns at him. She pulls her bow to full draw and he slides his hands over her shoulders as though to adjust her position. Down her arms, along every bump and ridge. Gale doesn’t know what to make of it, but he can’t bring himself to look away from the interaction and he fumbles for his clothes blindly. Xaph turns, shaking Astarion’s hands off her, and relaxes her own arms. She shows him how her fingers are positioned on the string of her bow, and Gale can’t quite tell but he thinks he sees her fingers flutter as they change position over and over again. Her gaze is fixed on her fingers. Astarion is watching her face. She smiles. She never shows her teeth, they’ve noticed. Astarion’s head tilts to the side. Then he puts his arms on her shoulders again. He pushes, turning her. Turning her to face Gale’s tent. Red eyes have found him. He’s been caught. At least he’s found a shirt to pull on before he’s dragged out of his tent.
“Don’t skulk, wizard.” Astarion calls. Xaph hisses something at him about not waking the others, hitting his shoulder, but he just smiles back at her. Down at her, he’s taller if you don’t count the horns. She elbows him and Astarion stumbles dramatically, hands clutched to his stomach as though she’s stabbed him. They talk a bit more, and Gale thinks he hears think about it, Astarion, as he ducks out of his tent. He’s managed to wrap his shirt around himself and tie it, but he’s struggling with the ties at his wrists and he doesn’t want to conjure a mage hand just for it to flicker in and out of the air. That would be one too many embarrassing missteps. First getting stuck in a rock, then freezing in combat, and then to fail at a simple cantrip? No, better to leave the ties trailing. When he reaches Xaph her back is turned to him as she pulls her arrows from her makeshift target. She leaves both her quiver and her bow against the tree. Navy, three or four shades darker than the rest of her skin, stripes her stomach. Previous battles scar the skin of her limbs. There’s a mark on her neck, but he can’t quite make out what it is. A small pile of fabric by the tree turns out to be a robe that falls past her knees. Deep green and patterned with yellowing ginkgo leaves. The ranger allows herself some luxuries then.
“Shall we walk?” she asks, extending an arm to the woods. The sleeve of the robe is a handwidth wider than it needs to be and as she moves various sections of her abdomen are shadowed and highlighted. “Astarion can handle the watch until someone else wakes up.”
Xaph meanders away from camp, careful not to be walking with Gale rather than ahead of him. Something about this feels soft and timeless. The party don’t spend the majority of their time in simple clothes, and when they make camp it’s Xaph and Lae’zel who have the least qualms about shedding layers. Not Gale. He sits by the fire and tells stories and lulls the camp to sleep, but always wrapped up in purple robes. She didn’t know the shirt under his robe was the kind he has to fold about himself and tie at the sides. It ends halfway to his knees, not yet tucked into his trousers. The neck is a wide v, a shape she knows, but there’s a mark in the skin she hadn’t noticed before. Part of a circle, wispy. A tattoo. The wizard can be surprising when he wants to be. The silver in his hair is turned gold by the dawn, and the brown of his eyes reveal hidden depths in the light. He could weave enchantments with a squint of his eyes alone, she thinks.
The bank of the Chionthar is only fifteen minutes away. Trees rustle above their heads and the river rushes beneath their feet. Xaph settles cross-legged on the bank and lets her tail dip into the water just to feel it. Successfully tempted, she reaches out and lets her fingers slip under the surface. The water of the Chionthar is clear here, though she stirs up some mud with her fingers. Gale finds a low, nearby rock and sits. In silence. He watches as she devotes herself to feeling. The end of her sleeve is falling into the water but she doesn’t care. Her hair is loose and falling over her shoulder. Sunlight, pale yellow, dances on the river. Ripples where she makes contact. Sets her hair alight. A stranger could mistake her for a naiad if they stumbled upon her like this.
“It’s a wonderful morning.” Xaph whispers, her words a lily pad alighting on the river.
“A picture.” Gale agrees. Neither of them voice the next part of the sentiment. How many more mornings will they see? This morning, this sight. Immortalised in their minds for fear it might be their last. In another life they might be seeing it memorised in paint. Rather, Gale would see it in paint. Xaph may have seen the real thing. Felt the cold water against warm skin. Breathed the fresh air, nearby moss. She shuffles to face him, wiping her hand dry on her trousers before she presents it to him.
“Here. Let me tie those.” She offers. He leans forward after a moment’s hesitation, letting Xaph takes his hands into her lap. She smells of ginger. Their hands have touched often enough that the contrast of colour is no longer off-putting, but Xaph doesn’t think she’ll ever get used to how soft the skin of Gale’s palm is. She’s all too aware of her claws, as though she’s liable to tear him open. As though he’s made of silk. But he trusts her. He said so. She finds one set of ties and brings them high above his wrist. “You wax poetic about my virtues, Mr of Waterdeep, as though you have none of your own.”
“I can’t imagine what-”
“Shush.” She tells him, pushing a thumb into his pulse. She doesn’t expect him to listen, but he does. When she pushes, his fingers curl in on themselves. His veins are almost purple in his wrist.
“You’re a good man. You helped me without even knowing me. You calm Lae’zel and you take Shadowheart’s jabs,” when she looks up from her fingers it is directly into his eyes and they’re like pots of honey as light shines on him, “We trust one another, but we haven’t been entirely honest with each other, have we? And we are not in a situation that is conducive to keeping secrets. You intend on being honest with me, so I will be honest with you.” She leaves Gale’s wrist, now wrapped in the cuff of his sleeve, and moves onto the other one. Once she starts to work on that knot she looks up at him again. She’s offering him a trade, and he’s going to take it. He’s going to take it, but it still takes him a beat to get the words out.
“You see, I have this…condition. Very different from the parasite we share, but just as deadly,” Xaph’s brow furrows, but she doesn’t interrupt, “The specifics are rather personal, but suffice it to say that it is a malady I have learned to live with - though not without some effort.”
“Does it hurt?” she asks then. The back of his hand is flush to one of her palms, and the fingers of her other hand have stilled and curled around his wrist. The combination of contact and words soothes, if only superficially.
“Yes. Yes, it does. But one must take these things one step at a time. What it comes down to is this,” here he goes, all or nothing. Well. Not quite all. Not yet. “Every so often I need to get my hands on a powerful magical item and absorb the Weave inside.”
“Raw magic? Why?”
“I can say no more on the matter. Not now, anyway. Just trust me when I say it’s all of vital importance. It’s been days since I last consumed an artefact. Since before we were abducted. By that I mean it is imperative that I find and consume the Weave at the earliest possible juncture, and I need your help to do so.”
“Where do we find these artefacts?” Xaph asks. We, that’s a positive. She finishes the knot at his cuff and settles her hands in her lap.
“As luck would have it, Faerun is full of them. Though I do feel obliged to point out that items of power tend to be in hands of power. There will be danger involved. Or great cost.”
“That sounds about on track with our lives at the moment,” Xaph admits when it’s clear that he’s done, “It sounds draining. Unlike anything I’ve ever heard of. Mind, I’m not primarily a spellcaster,” she pauses, then shifts so her palms are open to his again, “You ask me for help. I offer my hands.” Gale thanks her in as few words as he can manage, which is still a good dozen more than most people would use, and Xaph prepares to uphold her end of the bargain.
“I told you I’d had brushes with the infernal before. I’ve met Raphael more than once. He did offer me a deal, like I said, but that was only a year ago. Ten years ago I was messing around somewhere I shouldn’t have been, and Mephistopheles noticed. My family’s from his line, you see. He thought I’d found something - to this day I don’t know what - and he handed me over to his son to get the information out of me. Raphael had his fun with me but he knew I couldn’t give him what he wanted. I convinced him that I would be more useful to him alive than to his father dead.”
“You signed a deal.” Gale realises aloud. She’d told Wyll she hadn’t.
“Not in the traditional sense. It wasn’t a contract for my soul, no devil could convince me to part with that. It was a contract for work. Twenty years commission. I owe him one job a year, no questions asked. In exchange, my family and I are sheltered from Mephistopheles.” She ends her story there, staring at her tail in the river.
“Like you told Lae’zel. Your people aren’t compliant. You’re survivors. And you survived.” Gale lets his hand find Xaph’s. His fingers circle her thumb, not wanting to cross any sort of boundary he’s unaware of, but her fingers curl around his hand and squeeze. “You outmanouevered an archdevil and talked a cambion’s price down from your soul. Frankly, Xaph, I’m impressed.” A smile flickers. Her skin is warm and textured and he lets his hand sit in hers until she pulls away and starts to fiddle with a ring on her pinkie finger. It’s a plain thing, that ring, a copper band that only holds a single stone. An opal, he suspects, from the ever-shifting colours of it. He’s never seen her without it, but now she takes it off. Slowly easing it over the knuckle, leaving a strip of skin that is a slightly paler blue than the rest of her, hidden from the sun. She holds it out to him without a word. He takes it, though he’s a little confused as to why he’s being asked to examine it. Was it a gift from Raphael? Could he even use that word for such a thing? He knows the answer the moment he touches it. This ring is stuffed full of magic. It sits in his palm and he passes his other hand over it. The ring levitates, then drops.
“This is a ring of sending,” sending stones. Rare, powerful magic. Smiths in the Sembia region used to set them in gold necklaces. No mention of Sembia comes without mention of Netheril. “Where did you get this? If you don’t mind my asking.” Pain makes his manners something of an afterthought, but Xaph doesn’t begrudge him an answer,
“My mother made it,” she’s rubbing the join between her finger and her palm, “She made two pairs. One for me, and one for Quahala,” her sister, the one that lives in Waterdeep, “So that no matter what plane we were on, we would never be lost to her. Spell went a bit wonky a couple years ago and she couldn’t fix it. Only works when it wants now, but it does still hold magic.” She had been heard crying and cursing a few nights ago by Wyll and Shadowheart. Was this the reason? Had she been wrestling with the ring, trying to reach her family?
“I know it does,” Gale closes his hand around the ring, just for a moment, to strengthen his resolve. Then, “This is a precious thing to you. I can’t accept it.” When he goes to give her the ring back, she pushes his hand away.
“Take it.”
“Xaph-”
“Gale. It doesn’t work, and it can help you. Take it.” She insists. Compassion. Sympathy. She can’t bring herself to smile. It feels like she’s giving him her whole finger, ring still on. He tries to say her name again, but the soft sound of it is drowned out by a yell in the distance.
“A vampire?”
“Oh shit.” Xaph stands and brushes her trousers off.
“I’m sorry, did Lae’zel just say-”
“She did. Well. Uh. We all have our secrets. Astarion’s is that he’s a vampire, and it seems he’s decided to tell the whole camp without me,” her words are rushed and panicked now, and their sanctuary is broken, “Excuse me, I need to make sure they don’t kill him.” Xaph races away without another word. Her robe billows out behind her as she rockets back to camp. Gale is left sitting on the rock, her ring burning through his palm.
Meet my girl Nightwatcher! She is my oldest OC created way back when I was 12 and just reading Warriors for the first time. Her appearance has changed several times over the years but her lore has pretty much stayed the same. Here's a brief description of her life.
She was born to an Riverclan she-cat with her brother Littlefield, her birth mother did not survive the birth and the two of them were taken in by Snowleaf the late deputy who raised them with her own kits. Once becoming an apprentice she became fast friends with Mousepaw (a young Longstar). She could often be found in trees just observing the world around her in her free time. Which led to her name Nightwatcher.
On her warrior ceremony she was taken by the Reds a group of rouges that have been terrorizing the four clans. They ripped off her tail leaving it behind to make the clan cats to believe her dead.
She was presumed dead for 3 seasons (3 years) and was held captive for 2 and a half of those seasons. Far from the clans. There she met Willow and Rock two loners who were expecting kits and had been captured as well. During this time Nightwatcher is called the Scared one or just Scar.
She is made to fight in an arena like thing to survive, losing means death. This is where the majority of her scars come from.
Rock is killed not long after their arrival and Willow along with two of three of her kits don't survive the first week after their birth. They're too weak. Nightwatcher takes the last kit, a tom and names him Lark after a bird his mother often talked about. She vows to get them out and raise him as her own.
She manages to get them out and they spend the next six months making their way back to Riverclan. They arrived mid battle and shock everyone who believed her dead. They help win this battle and everyone is happy to have her home and welcome Lark to their clan. Before Nightwatcher can ask for Snowleaf she sees then Longscars half star mark on his forehead marking him as deputy. Her mother is gone and she never got to say goodbye.
She settles back in and fights many battles with her clan mates. And later has three kits with Longscar. She is the winning factor in the last battle against the Reds and her life is taken as she takes out the Rouge groups leader. Leaving Foxkit(Foxchaser), Claykit(Claytail/Star), and Stormkit(Storm) to be raised by their father alone.
Once I redo Longscar/stars reference sheet I'll add him here, his old one is up on my Instagram (Renniguess) if you want to see it.
If stormlight ever becomes a tv series the teaser trailer between seasons should just be a scene from the appropriate character flashback
Season 2 should be the one where lin davar is carrying child shallan away from her mothers corpse while singing the lullaby
Season 3 should be from dalinar visiting the nightwatcher
Neither is technically a spoiler since the events are mentioned in previous books while giving a clear indicator that shit is going on
The Illustrious Table of Contents
Archivist’s note: Entries are listed in the order they are listed in the manuals. Since I suspect the earlier manuals might be written before the seasons aired, any discrepancies in episode order vs manual order might be because of the manual order being the original order the episodes were planned to air, but I can’t of course confirm this.
I have marked episode numbers but have not marked season finales, as I’m not sure whether Nachtwacht had them (especially since the episodes aren’t connected with eachother through storyline). There are some seasons where I suspect that the last episode listed was the season finale due to certain threat level evaluations within the manuals, but in that case The Silent Twins would be season 3’s last episode, which isn’t correct; The Metentis was the last episode of season 3, and the Metentis simply isn’t season finale material. I have made sure to also include episode titles for the entry names that don’t match up with the episode name.
Top Five Favorite Episodes of "BABYLON 5" (Season Three: "Point of No Return")
Below is a list of my top five (5) favorite episodes from Season Three (1995-1996) of "BABYLON 5". Created by J. Michael Straczynski, the series starred Bruce Boxleitner, Claudia Christian, Jerry Doyle and Mira Furlan:
TOP FIVE FAVORITE EPISODES OF "BABYLON 5" (SEASON THREE: "POINT OF NO RETURN")
1. (3.10) "Severed Dreams" - In this outstanding episode, President Clark of Earth Alliance tries to seize control of Babylon 5 by force, forcing station commander Captain John J. Sheridan and the command crew to take arms against their own government and initiating the Earth Civil War. The episode won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in 1997.
2. (3.15) "Interludes and Examinations" - Captain Sheridan struggles to gather a force against the Shadows, when the Shadow War begins in earnest. Ambassador Londo Mollari looks forward to a reunion with a past lover, and Dr. Franklin falls further into his stims addiction.
3. (3.09) "Point of No Return" - When President Clark declares martial law throughout Earth Alliance, the command crew tries to stop Nightwatch from taking control of the station. Meanwhile, Ambassador Londo Mollari receives a prophecy from Emperor Turhan's widow when she visits the station.
4. (3.16-3.17) "War Without End" - This is a two-part episode in which the station's former commander, Jeffrey Sinclair, returns to participate in a mission vital to the future survival of Babylon 5 - traveling back in time to steal Babylon 4 and send it to the past.
5. (3.05) "Voices of Authority" - Commander Susan Ivanova and Ranger Marcus Cole search for more of the First Ones with the help of Draal, while Sheridan comes under the scrutiny of the Nightwatch and Babylon 5's new "political officer".
Writer’s Year-End Roundup!
I was tagged by the lovely @asaara-writes and I’m going to cop out and tag anyone who wants to do this and hasn’t already XD
Overall, 2022 was a good year. I finally sorted my ideas out enough to get back to longfic. Mostly it was about planning but since that came easily in places I’ve also started proper writing, and as of today, I’m 12 chapters into my Prince Alistair AU and just about ready to start posting.
Outside Dragon Age, DOTA; Dragon’s Blood season 3 gave me some lovely inspiration and I’m pretty proud of te work I did there. The Wayhaven Chronicles also gripped me tight and would not let go, and aside from some solid oneshots I’m now pretty much halfway through the first murder mystery story I’ve ever attempted, complete with vampires. It’s been a lot of fun reconnecting with all the characters I’ve written about in this last year, especially since 2021 was still mostly spent in a nice creative primordial soup waiting for ideas to coalesce.
Special mention to the print version of Falcon, which is a project I started last year and hope to get finished this year so it can sit and look pretty on my shelf.
Words written: 75,307, of which 29,562 has been published. This isn’t as much as I was expecting considering how many hours it feels I’ve put in, but 1) it’s still the length of a pretty hefty novel and 2) I haven’t counted all the words that are just planning or notebook scribbling, so it’s actually a heck of a lot more.
New things I tried: The biggest new thing is the venture into the murder mystery genre with Like Glitter And Gold. Having to work backwards from the crime to the clues meant the whole story has had to be much tighter than I’m used to in terms of detail, which meant having a much more invested plan and many, many conspiracy board diagrams before I could actually start to write. It’s been fun, though. Apart from that, I’ve learned that I’m most efficient when I plan out a rough script for a chapter first and then try to fill it in, instead of writing a detailed draft on the first try. I’ll definitely use this going forward and hopefully it means I’ll have a bigger wordcount for next year.
Fic I spent the most time on: My Prince Alistair AU for sure. Partly because I’m having to replay the game to refresh my memory of the events and transcribe then rearrange a lot of the dialogue, but also because it’s given me a lot of problems with the structure. It’s also how I found out I don’t so well trying to make a polished first draft. Also also, Dragon Age: Origins is a ridiculously long game, with so much talking - 35k words in, and they’ve only just left Lothering!
Fic I spent the least time on: I always feel miserable on my birthday, so this year I channelled that energy into Once More Around The Sun, a Nate x Detective Leah oneshot that I pushed out in a day. Except for the epistolary chapter of Falcon, it’s the most I’ve ever written in a single day, so I’m pretty proud of it. Happy Birthday to me.
Favourite thing I wrote: I’m pretty pleased with everything I’ve written for TWC this year, in particular So Let Us Melt, And Make No Noise, a fluffy, angsty oneshot, and Like Glitter And Gold, the murder mystery longfic, because it’s been something new for me.
Favourite thing I read: New Year’s Resolution: actually bookmark fics when you like them! I have binged works by @serenpedac (TWC), @tarysande (Shakarian), and @viciously-witty (Labyrinth), and very early in the year I finally got around to The Revelation In All Things by @ellenembee, which is one of the most we thought out Cullen x Lavellan fics I’ve read. In terms of published works, I actually read published stuff this year! Highlights include The Lies of Locke Lamora, Nightwatch, Sistersong, and Ivanhoe.
Writing goals for next year: Finish the remaster and print version of Falcon so I can finally put it on my shelf, finish LG&G, finally start a proper first draft of my Post-Blight story, make separate masterposts for Dragon Age and everything else to pin to each of my blogs, and streamline the way I plot for the Prince Alistair AU. Should be simple enough...
Due to complications that I assume are Tumblr's fault, despite my intention of having one big nice post with all my links, I'm gonna have to do two or three.
How I will go about updating this is beyond me. I'll figure it out. Probably same thing as before where I tack on new ones and then make a new new one in about a year-ish.
Fun/funny in this one. (Drama may slide in but intended mood is light)
Thoughts on how they will explain a possible 3 episode Lucy absence?
The first thing that comes to mind that makes sense to me is Lucy's family.
We don't really know much about Lucy. Take it from her, her entire life is just work, gym, and Kate. She doesn’t really have anything else going on (I really thought her being a junior agent and wanting to follow in Tennant's footsteps was gonna be up there, but they seemed to randomly drop that after they futzed with the timeline to give us that Kacy backstory). The only thing we really know about her is that she has issues with her rich family and potentially burned that bridge when she left Texas. Given NCIS: Hawai`i's focus on ohana and the crumbs she was dropping last season (they were her third-most talked about thing behind work and Kacy angst lol), Lucy’s family troubles seem to be shaping up to be her other big long-term storyline.
Among the bits of bts we've gotten from 2x07 (presumably the last episode she would be in if she were to be absent for 3 episodes) was this interesting little sneak peak:
(from a bts video a crewmember uploaded, these are tori and yas's stand-ins while the crew is setting up the shot)
Looks like the perfect set-up for them to get personal, like talking about Lucy’s fear of the water or quietly reflecting on her insecurities or her family/childhood (we already have a Whistler focused episode so this could be Lucy’s moment). Like something on the same level of seriousness as the scene where Lucy’s comforting and encouraging Kate outside of the FBI BBQ, but maybe with less anxiety and more chill vibes lol. It could be a great opportunity to finally introduce some substantial Lucy backstory and or a long-term background storyline that isn’t just about her and Kate.
I know a lot of people theorize that her family has cut her out completely or vice versa, but NCIS: Hawai'i already has one parent-child relationship that started out like that with Wally and Kai so maybe they want to differentiate a little (though they could use that similarity as an opportunity to get them to bond over it whenever that storyline happens, a more in-depth version of 1x04). I could see her not reaching out, but not having their numbers blocked either or still keeping minimal contact with them, birthdays and whatnot. Maybe something happened with a niece or nephew or her parents and she needs to go back and see them. It would warrant Tennant giving her extended personal time to take care of it. Plus, it would be easy to explain why she’s not in the episode at all if she’s back on the mainland and if they wanted to, they could include her without her needing to be on location/the sets via either phone or video calls and she could record all her scenes ahead of time. Though, the cons to this would be that if Lucy was absent from the episode, that means we wouldn’t get to see any of the angsty family scenes! (unless there were flashbacks shown later) and it could turn into a lot of tell not show type story writing which I hate. It would be a neat way to introduce angst though if Lucy is keeping it all in and not telling anybody about what happened even though its clearly affecting her (or if Kate feels hurt that Lucy didn't want her to go with her/isn't telling her either). It would be an interesting bump in the road in a season where she's been building trust and communication with Kate. My dream would be for it to progress slowly, more mentions of her past here and there, her family slowly becoming more present in her life (good or bad), maybe a brother or sister shows up in an episode down the line as a suspect or to visit and that throws her off, but I want the parents showing up to be an unexpected monumental thing that doesn't happen until like at least late s3 or s4.
Each of their cases takes places over the course of a few days minimum and that’s not even accounting for the amount of time that might take place in between them. Unless they threw in a few Nightwatch type cases (which they solved in one friday night and one entire saturday) then I don’t see how you explain away that big of an absence in-story unless you introduce a big storyline like Lucy needing to go back home for some reason.
Another possibility I’ve seen floating around is Lucy getting hurt in the upcoming episodes, which is very doable and I would not hate it at all. My only potential concern with that is I would want her to have scenes with the whole team and not just Kate while she's recovering. So maybe if she’s in the hospital, Tennant comes by to see her and tells her about the case or the boys throw her a little party in the hospital or they video call her because she’s bored out of her mind. Though, since Lucy’s in the crossover, I don’t know how keen Tennant would be bringing an agent who was recently seriously injured with her to LA on a mission like the one being described in the crossover (Noah is also listed as being in the crossover, but I don’t know if I’ve heard or seen anything at all about him filming out of state). IIRC, the synopsis mentions something about agents being targeted so Lucy being separated from everyone while in Texas could make her an easy target? Or if she hears about Tennant going to LA, it would make sense why she’s the one accompanying her because she’s already on the mainland and would probably be looking for an excuse to leave her family (or maybe she wants to leave Texas to protect them since she’s a target).
Hell, since we're speculating let's just throw shit at the wall. Maybe they do something wild like Lucy went on a long undercover thing or oh she's suspended because she fucked up.
Of course, they could still go with, “oh Tennant just shipped Lucy off to help another division since she's the only one who doesn't have family they need to take care of in Hawai’i or Lucy needed to help a friend or something it’s nbd,” and have her come back like nothing happened.
tldr; keeping up with the taras, she gets hurt, they just brush it off casually, or they throw something out of left field
(i am in the camp that if she were to be absent entirely, id lean more on it only being a one or two episode absence at most)
#ncis hawaii#ncis hawai'i#lucy tara#ik lucy isnt tennant so she doesnt HAVE to be there but 3 ep seems like way too many to miss#it would be hard to explain an absence that long in show unless she was gone for something really important right#watch me be the clown and if lucy does leave she comes back like nbd and they move on rq LMAO#imagine if whistler somehow appeared in every episode and lucy#im sorry this is long as shit but thanks for the ask!#this is a biased post because i just want to hear about lucy's backstory already LMAO#i love all the kacy content dont get me wrong but i feel like the teams slacking a little on backstory for everybody this season#i am excited to see how they handle the family storyline to the point where ive probably hyped it up too much in my head lol#theres just so much potential there and as a poc i want it to be relatable and nuanced#also im just really excited to see pearl ohana vs blood family i wanna see kate stand by lucy i want it all#i also love whump and hurt character angst tho so if lucy just gets injured ill be fine with that too#the problem with all the scenarios is i want to watch them all unfold on tv#with no absences LMAO so im praying
That was season 4! I have to say I much prefer this season then the last. While the transition from space back to earth felt a bit rushed, I think each arch was good. Though I prefers the first half of the season, even though the show didn’t give us that many bonding moment. Though I’m not sure how season 5 will go, I think half of it is canon while the second canon is what-if stories?
Babylon 5 rewatch Episode 2.22: The Fall of Night
Babylon 5 is at the center of not one but three conflicts as John Sheridan agrees to shelter a wounded Narn cruiser. The Centauri don’t like this. Earth doesn’t like this. The Shadows don’t like this. But Sheridan has a strong moral compass and what he doesn’t like is how much the institutions around him are willing to sacrifice in the name of forging some kind of cursory peace.
Things I liked about The Fall of Nighit
1, Lennier and Vir’s friendship. If you ask me Vir, could be friends with literally anyone. He’s such an understanding soul. Lennier is by nature a little judgey. More closed off. So when they sit down next to each other and discover how much they have in common both of them look at each other like “hello what” and automatically agree to meet again. But even this exchange is done almost like spies meeting and I don’t think we stop to think about that very often. These are the attaches of two ambassadors for two of the most powerful races in the galaxy… they could very well be exchanging state secrets instead of expressing solidarity for their equally frustrating jobs.
2, The Centauri are apparently willing to put their ships on autopilot and black out from g forces if it means when they come to they’ll be in a better firing position. This seems extremely reckless and VERY Centauri. It is the spacebattle equivalent of the hair. Big. Flashy. Not well thought through.
3, In the wake of the mass driver bombing, Sheridan gives Londo an opportunity to speak and Londo is like “NOPE” and jets before he says something that’s going to get him and his whole race in more trouble than they already are. Garibaldi then reads Londo like a literal book, delivering one of my favorite analyses of the character. Everyone thought Londo was a clown, indulging in opulence, going into debt at the casino, drinking himself to a stupor in public, but Garibaldi was his friend and knows that Londo’s not dumb, he’s actually very smart and his mind moves really fast. His error is in his judgment and priorities and he’s currently in waters he did not expect to tread. He’s scared, and he’s going to keep darting in and out of cover until he feels like he has a handle on things or he gets picked off by a hunter, whichever comes first. Also a very classic JMS line “He’s a pain in the butt, but he’s our pain in the butt.” Hunt for that or similar lines in other JMS stuff, he loves that line.
4, The ache of watching McCarthysim at work is very effective. Zach knows the guys he’s ratting on don’t deserve to be ratted on and even says so. “They’re just fooling around” but we can tell by the level of interest and tone of the Nightwatch captian’s voice that they’re gonna get blackballed. Zach can’t deny that they said what they said, but can tell that ratting them out is the wrong thing to do. In the end he relents with a bunch of qualifications but the Nightwatch doesn’t want qualifications. They want names. Thank you for your service.
5, I love that the guy there to ally with the Centauri is from the Ministry of Peace. So poignant. They’ll get peace all right, by paying off the aggressors.
6, When the Narn ship was coming under threat by the Centauri warship, Sheridan opened a line to Londo just to spit in his face and hang up. It was amazing. Also during this crisis, Sheridan whips out a law book to smack the Nightwatch guy back in his hole. Sinclair would be proud.
7, Watching B5 come under attack is so emotionally stirring. Even on a rewatch, I don’t want to see it hurt.
8, We have arrived! The scene where Kosh reveals himself. I love that G’Kar is hiding in the plants – like he’s not a huge gecko man who people are going to notice. I also love how plaintiff his voice is, thinking if he speaks on Sheridan’s behalf it’ll help him in the political shitshow he’s currently in. I mean he’s issuing this apology for helping a Narn ship and G’Kar is very very very grateful for that. Also B5 blew up a Centauri warship so he’s pretty grateful for that too, I mean come on… I like that B5 has like a standard subway system in the middle of it and that they let the Puppet Friends ride. I miss the puppet friends. I love that the rotational gravity system means there’s a weightless portion in the center of hydroponics and that we used that to our advantage in this story. Also the vorlons in their native form play on the perception of the lesser races. They are light beings, and humans see them as angels. The rest of the races see them as prophets or gods, but none of these perceptions are perfect. We see wings and white robes and think Angel, but Kosh didn’t appear like a rennaissance painting. He’s got a butterfly look to him, too. The face he wears is a facsimile of a human not an exact human. He’s not perfect, we’re just in awe. Love that.
9 And finally a lot has been said about why Londo doesn’t see anything when Kosh appears. He’s been touched by the Shadows, so he can’t be converted by the Vorlons b/c we’re playing a game of Othello today I guess. Maybe because he doesn’t actually believe in his pantheon of gods so he doesn’t have any deities to witness. Maybe he’s lying because what he saw was his own greed and vanity. The general consensus is the first – that he’s incapable of seeing the light because he’s in the dark. For a fresh take on it, let’s look at the Vorlons through this lens. Kosh said before that if he revealed himself everyone would know him… I take this as being a side effect of being Vorlon. Vorlons are a feeling not an image. Like Magenta. Magenta’s not a real color, it exists on the color wheel because something has to connect red and purple on the color spectrum… but the spectrum of visible light is actually a straight line. The wavelengths for red and purple are far from touching, but our brains can perceive when they’re both present, so Magenta occurs. It’s imaginary, but we see it for real with our eyes. That’s Vorlons. Perhaps Londo saw a shapeless light thing in the sky, perhaps that’s what Vorlons really are… or perhaps they have no visible representation at all until they hit our brains. Our eyeballs behold something, but our brains have to construct it out of pieces. When the rest of the galaxy looked at Kosh they used the color wheel to construct him, but Londo was only given the wavelengths. He saw nothing, because nothing was there to see. I really wish there was another Centauri there to be like “I saw the goddess Li welcoming me to her arms!” and Londo’s over there like “I’m the problem” instead of not really answering that question. Maybe it’s answered in season 3, I don’t know. Did Vir see anyone up there? He must have been on break.
What I like Less about 22
1, So here’s where I’m going to talk about Keffer. I know the origin story…. that he was an unwelcome addition to the cast added per network request, but who the hell is he other than that? I think its remarkable how he slips right out of my head the minute he is off camera. We know he’s a pilot, that he was close to Carlos (whose story/death you may recall I was laughing at in a previous episode because its significance ALSO came out of nowhere), and that he made friends with the GROPOS grunts (who we incidentally learned to care about enough in that one episode that we were sad when they died…. Awkward considering Keffer’s contribution to this episode…) Honestly the most interesting thing about him is that he’s got an old-timey fighter pilot scarf he wears and he believes in ghosts and I bet you all forgot about the ghosts. Honestly, the most interesting thing about Keffer is how he’s a lesson in how not to write an interesting character – and no shade on JMS for that, I know he did it on purpose. Significant things happening to a character does not automatically make them a strong character. Keffer experienced loss, came face to face with the shadows, got in fights… a lot of stuff happened to him, but he was almost always the only named character in those scenes. We cared about the GROPOS because they cared about each other and we responded to that. Keffer was there to play cabbage head and ask questions. He’s not tight with any of our main cast who we’ve had tons more time to grow attached to, and dies for plot reasons without leaving an impact with his loss. Heck, you can see the value of interpersonal relationships on character development in action when the show used a shoehorn to try and force some in in context to Carlos a second and a half before he died. We had him drinking at the bar with command staff suddenly, we had him die as a result of a flight mission Sheridan was part of to make Sheridan feel guilty about it. Everyone was standing around going like “No, Not Ramirez” and if you recall on my previous episode writeup I was LAUGHING at how tortured this sudden human connection was. Keffer could have been made interesting. Follow me on this.
My treatment on how to make Keffer interesting:
Let’s say Keffer was introduced as an old friend of one of our characters – Fraknlin let’s say. He was a friend from the Minbari War days that helped him sneak behind enemy lines. Perhaps he was complicit in the covering up and destruction of Franklin’s notes on Minbari anatomy. As a result, the two hang out in medbay sometimes, talking about old times and comparing the current war to the one they fought together. We learn that Keffer has a fire for justice. Hates bullies. Sees the strong as absolute defenders of the weak and that any stronger race picking on a weaker one is a bigger coward than the unvierse can hold. Then when Carlos gets killed by the ghost he starts researching what it could be. Kosh and Delenn tell him to stay out of it. The audience assumes he’s going to uncover something and bring Franklin and other characters into Delenn and Sheridan’s confidence about the shadows through curiosity and honor, but we’re learning through the episodes that the Shadows are IMMENSELY powerful and have no patience for flies. When he breaks off from his squad to go have a looksee at what he suspects led to his personal friend Carlos’s death, we know this is going to kill him. He ignores the warnings of those who have more awareness and dies to bring back evidence of the Shadows to the station. Sheridan recognizes how Keffer’s curiosity and sense of judgment led to recklessness, something Sheridan himself is prone to. He vows not to let Keffer die in vain, but also states that the proof he got has changed everything… and that Sheridan would have done the same. Killing your men in the name of a mission is never the goal but there’s a line everyone crosses when the safety of the universe is at stake and sometimes things are worth dying for. Franklin walks into medbay, casts a look to the counter where Keffer used to sit all those nights, and turns away.
But that’s not what happen. Keffer’s dead now and I don’t miss him. Glad he emailed the Shadows to ISN five nanoseconds before he died.
Babylon 5 is now the last best hope for victory because sometimes peace is another word for surrender and because secrets have a way of getting out. On to season 3!
