Summary Nico hadn't realized how much he had been struggling this season until someone started leaving little presents in his stall. There was no reason why these seemingly mundane items would have such a potent magical aura. He doesn't question it because it makes him feel better— play better— until his curiosity started to gnaw at him. He didn't figure it out until after the plane ride back from Nashville— it just so happens, the calendar had ticked over to Valentine's Day.

Below the cut: I did end up writing a little blurb that touches on how the magic in this universe works; you don't need to read it to understand the fic but it's a fun bonus prologue if you're interested.

Everyone has magic. For the majority of people, it’s just a slight tingle under their skin they can barely control— it can make their coffee the perfect temperature or keep a traffic light green for a moment longer in an emergency. Most of the others are more adept users— Magics— are able to perform complicated spells or rituals. Then, there are the fae-touched— as they’re called in the old world— or the Gifted— as they’re called in America.

When Nico Hischier’s magic came in the day before his fourteenth birthday— January 3rd, 2013, he had already known that he would be special. It had been clear to his parents that he had inherited his mother’s Gift when he pulled a tiny spark from Nina’s teddy bear when he was only four years old. They had spent his childhood preparing him for the wonders and the responsibilities of being Gifted, and he took his role very seriously.

The way his mom always explained it: people need the Gifted, like her and like Nico, to keep the magic alive and balanced— to keep everything running. So, Nico had poured himself into his craft; it made him a better hockey player, and more importantly, it made him a better teammate. When he was named Captain of the New Jersey Devils, he put an even heavier burden on himself to make sure everyone on the team had what they needed.

He knew it was not all on him— the team has a Gifted trainer, and both Jonas and Johnny could help— but the thing is, Nico’s also always known his Gift was different— special— more potent than most others— not that he’s met that many other Gifteds, they’re pretty rare after all. Attachment, nostalgia, and comfort— love is what Nico’s Gift pulls from the aether, and love is the purest fuel for magic.

He just wished that people wouldn’t assume that he had all that much luck with love. Unlike his besotten parents and both his lovestruck siblings, he was painfully single. It’s fine— It’s fine because the most important thing right now was the team— The team and winning the Cup.

Yes I do have thoughts on omega4omega Nate and they honestly star with the AMAZING ABO SidGeno AU swallow the fire by cascara_soda.

Like, the idea that Nate is so uncomfortable and defiant as an omega, that he refuses it and doesn’t like what it means, secretly wishes to be literally anything else.

But of course Nate’s personal story is his growth and self-acceptance so by the time Cale arrives he’s…settled with himself. He doesn’t want omega shit, still, but he’s accepted that he can still be…whatever the fuck Nathan MacKinnon is, even though he was born an omega.

But Cale still rankles, a bit.

Because it wasn’t that Nate had ever thought himself above other omegas. He hadn’t, really, even though that was something that got twisted up in not wanting to be himself. But Cale smells like sunshine and he blushes when he introduces himself. And Nate’s chill with being an omega, like, he’s cool he’s totally fine. But he looks at Cale, beautiful and soft-skinned and thrillingly confident, and fuck, he wants to be an alpha if just so he can have this one.

Anyway. That’s just a ramble. I do hope you write these two someday—I adore them.

Yes!! @nightshadehasblorbos reminded me of this headcanon in a reply:

I remember you talking about writing Nate and Cale as omega/omega and how that would play on Sid being in an Alpha/Alpha relationship and how they had made a video about alpha/alpha to teach about wolf relationships and how they never even thought about omega/omega even though they were in a nontraditional relationship.

Gotta say, I'm sort of loving this headcanon about Nate sort of starting to be okay with his omega self until he meets Cale. At first he thinks he's annoyed because Cale is the type of omega Nate has never been able to be, and even though he doesn't even want to be, obviously, it's still grating. But then he starts noticing Cale taking up more and more of his mental attention, and smelling really amazingly good and...then it just sucks that Nate isn't an alpha. Because obviously such a perfect classic omega as Cale wouldn't want to be in a relationship with another omega. Right??

It’s possibly the most ridiculous plan he’s ever come up with. It’s definitely the fucking craziest, especially considering the fact that he’s very definitely dead if it doesn’t work. But he needs to buy time for the officers to find a way to get in here and take Bobby down, and he’s so desperate to get out of this alive and see Leon and Connor again that he’ll try just literally anything, even as Bobby stares at him unreadably and his hands shake against the restraints on his wrists.

Besides, he tries to tell himself against all common sense. If Lucy Grey could sing her way to survival, there’s no reason why he can’t do the same.
