Fall Special Edition Reading Challenge
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whoops! I've got a big TBR problem and a chunk of that is thanks to my love for special editions. The issue? I haven't read more than half of the SE's I own, and I can't keep allowing myself to purchase more when I don't even know if I like what I have. Plus I'm beyond out of space on my shelves and I think it's about time I start unhauling what I don't like instead of excusing their existence "because they're pretty."
So for this fall/autumn season, from September through November, I'm challenging myself to finish all 19 of my currently unread SE's and decide if they stay or if they go. Technically more books I preordered have arrived since taking these photos, and there are more to be delivered this fall, but I will not be forcing myself to include them.
Have you read any of these? If so, did you enjoy them? Are there some in here you want to read, but haven't had the chance yet?
Feel free to comment or tag the SE you like best just based on looks!

I think Nicki Pau Preto has an amazing ability to come up with very interesting worlds, magic systems, and fully fleshed characters. This book had all the right vibes for me with necromancy and politics and messy families and their drama and past. Overall, this was an enjoyable book!
My biggest complaint is that so much of the world building and exposition happens not through dialogue or learning organically through characters moving through the world, but through very long internal monologues of Wren. It's a whole lot of telling for far past one hundred pages, it's really the one solid way we learn most everything.
My other complaint is that there was nothing in this book that wasn't obvious or heavily hinted to the point of there being almost no surprises or twists. Every single thing revealed I already knew. Predictability doesn't always make things unenjoyable but there was a slight lack of enjoyment here because nothing ever felt exciting?
Wren was a great character! Selfish and a little arrogant but not so much she was insufferable and she had good character growth. I do feel Leo'a and Wren's friendship happened over literally one night and a daytime excursion so crazy fast. I liked Leo though! And I liked Julian too. I love that they all feel different from each other and her other previous characters. I don't super love Wren's and Julian's infatuation because they're not together yet, but I don't hate it. Again, I'm just like... y'all barely talked and only had maybe a week of traveling together, stop being horny.
The magic and the world is really cool and I'm still intrigued to see what will happen next! I just hope that maybe the next book isn't as predictable

✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨
Ghostsmith by
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
[instagram]
THIS is how you do a sequel! Oh my gosh, I am obsessed with this. I liked Bonesmith well enough but this just took it to a whole new level.
Our characters really take off from where we left them and grow into their full potential. We get to see how they’ll fit into their future roles before they’ve even got there and it was a genuine joy to follow their journey to that point.
Leo is BISEXUAL and no one can convince me otherwise. His flirting with Julian? His flirting with JAKOB? THE KISS? This chaotic bi has my whole heart in all honesty.
Julian and Wren’s journey in this book was really well handled, too. Julian’s lack of trust warring with his love for Wren was ON POINT. I felt every bit of that with them and I loved the moment he realised none of it mattered, that he loved her and she’d proven herself in so many ways.
The pacing in this book was honestly exceptional. It can be so hard to get the balance of build up and then cool down right, but I think this was done perfectly. I really loved all the details in the scenes following the climax and I would take a million more stolen moments with Wren, Leo and Julian hanging out, finally getting to relax and have fun.
I really can’t recommend this duology enough for any fantasy fans. It starts out firmly in the YA category but it evolves into something far more adult-feeling as Wren grows as a character.

FairyLoot Unboxing
Reap What You Sow August 2023
I really love this box, it's very cohesive! The theme is "Reap What You Sow".
The featured book is "Bonesmith" by Nicki Pau Preto. The book sounds pretty interesting. It's described as "Gideon the Ninth meets Game of Thrones" which are two books I wanted to like but didn't. But it was the writing style I didn't like, so I'm hoping this one will work for me. The recoloured cover isn't as nice as the original, it's just a bit gloomy. And the foiling on the hardcase isn't very impressive. But there are some really incredible features - the full artwork endpapers are different at each end, and both are gorgeous. The dust jacket is reversible, and the alternative cover is really nice, I'm definitely going to be displaying that one instead. And best of all, the edges are amazing - they're full artwork, and match the cover!
The first item is a glass tumbler. I've got a smaller one of these, which I love, so I'll probably use this too. This one features a quote from "Belladonna".
The next item is a set of page tabs. These are inspired by "The Bone Season". These are really pretty, and they come on a handy snap-in ruler. Unfortunately it doesn't fit in my journal.
Next is a pair of bookends. These are inspired by "Gideon the Ninth". I didn't like the book, but I love the design of these bookends! And you can never have too many bookends, I've got like, ten sets, and I always need more.
Next is a set of metal straws. These have a skull theme. This is the one item I don't like, I just think reusable straws are icky. It's an OCD thing. We've had a few sets in recent boxes, and I've run out of people to give them to.
The last item is a sticker sheet. They have a gothic theme, and they'll be great in my planner around halloween.
This month's tarot cards are Wren and Julian, from "Bonesmith".

RECO OF THE WEEK:
Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto
Synopsis:
"
I had a sister, once…
In a world ruled by fierce warrior queens, a grand empire was built upon the backs of Phoenix Riders—legendary heroes who soared through the sky on wings of fire—until a war between two sisters ripped it all apart.
I promised her the throne would not come between us.
Sixteen years later, Veronyka is a war orphan who dreams of becoming a Phoenix Rider from the stories of old. After a shocking betrayal from her controlling sister, Veronyka strikes out alone to find the Riders—even if that means disguising herself as a boy to join their ranks.
But it is a fact of life that one must kill or be killed. Rule or be ruled.
Just as Veronyka finally feels like she belongs, her sister turns up and reveals a tangled web of lies between them that will change everything. And meanwhile, the new empire has learned of the Riders’ return and intends to destroy them once and for all.
Sometimes the title of queen is given. Sometimes it must be taken."

It’s hard to believe we’re half way through the year already, I feel like these past few months have absolutely flown by.
