🗽 Brooklyn Bridge Park’s new public art “LAND” 🌇🧡✨
There is a new public sculpture by Nicholas Galanin at the @brooklynbridgepark. It’s constructed using the exact materials of the U.S. border wall. Nicholas Galanin created this work with the same steel tubing used to construct the U.S.-Mexico border wall, also echoing its 30-foot height. The metal was cut and reassembled to spell out LAND. Nicholas Galanin’s “In every language there is Land / En cada lengua hay una Tierra” is located at the Empire Fulton Ferry Lawn in Brooklyn Bridge Park and will be on view through fall 2023. @nicholasgalanin @publicartfund ✨

Yep it is time to bury some of the monuments @nicholasgalanin projects a strong image with his burial piece. His project is for Australia but the timing is perfect as many of the confederate monuments are tumbling down in the United States. Statues and monuments to those that fought and lost the civil war to continue slavery should be buried. No monuments for traitors, racists, slave owners, and losers. ・・・ A prospective burial site for Hyde Park’s Captian Cook statue at @biennalesydney - artwork by Nicholas Galanin. ‘Shadow on the Land, an excavation and bush buriel, 2020’. . . #blacklivesmatter #teardownraciststatues #teardownracistmonuments #teardownracism #offwiththeirheads #burythetraitor #burythepast #confederatestatues #participationtrophy #nicholasgalanin #blmmovement #blm #noracistmonuments (at United States of America) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBr4Sscjl7_/?igshid=16ztzshr562ej

LAUNCHING TODAY 🚀 We are excited to take part in the revival of @mtv’s Art Breaks. Together we commissioned five international artists to create new videos that will air on MTV and in Times Square at 1515 Broadway every day, on every hour. A new video will be released every Sunday through September 12 leading up to MTV’s Video Music Awards hosted this year in Brooklyn.
This week, we’re featuring @nicholasgalanin’s work Ix̱six̱án ax̱ tʼukanéiyi (2021). Meaning “I love you, my baby,” this video centers Indigenous families and communities through a sampling of Tlingit words of love and care spoken to an Indigenous child. Rejecting the false historical narratives and generational trauma inflicted by settler-colonialism, this video instead focuses on love, safety, and connection.

🌳 Back for @_desertx after another inspired visit to Navajo Nation in Utah & Arizona. This powerful piece titled ‘Never Forget’ by @nicholasgalanin speaks directly to the inequity of land division and ownership // About the piece: For Nicholas Galanin, a Tlingit and Unangax̂ artist and musician, memory and land are inevitably entwined. The 45-foot letters of Never Forget reference the Hollywood sign, which initially spelled out HOLLYWOODLAND and was erected to promote a whites-only development. Its timing coincided with a development in Palm Springs that also connected to the film industry: Studio contracts limited actors’ travel, contributing to the city’s rise as playground and refuge of the stars. Meanwhile, the white settler mythology of America as the land of the free, home of the brave was promoted in the West, and the landscape was cinematized through the same lens. Never Forget asks settler landowners to participate in the work by transferring land titles and management to local Indigenous communities. The work is a call to action and a reminder that land acknowledgments become only performative when they do not explicitly support the land back movement. Not only does the work transmit a shockwave of historical correction, but also promises to do so globally through social media. Repost @nicholasgalanin with @get_repost ・・・ Never Forget iron, paint, steel 2021 59’ 4” x 360’ 7” Colonial entities, the U.S. Constitution, and the current U.S. government refer collectively to people Indigenous to the continental U.S. as Indian. Hollywood’s misrepresentations of Indigenous people reflect, and attempt to justify U.S. policy. The term Indian is a refusal to acknowledge sovereignty and attempts to erase the diversity of over 500 distinct nations preexisting the invasion of this continent by Europeans. Indigenous land and Indigenous communities remain unique, resilient, complex and beautiful despite over 500 years of occupation by violent settler states. Never Forget refuses to legitimize settler occupation, and reframes a word of generic reduction to call for collective action. It is a monumental invitation to landowners: to seek out in Indigenous leadership for land relationship, to center Indigenous knowledge in creating sustainable practices, to contribute to real rent initiatives, and to transfer land titles and rights to Indigenous nations and communities. Land acknowledgements have become popular in the twenty-first century, with cultural and government entities paying lip service to Indigenous existence, without meaningful action of land return to Indigenous nations. Under U.S. law, Indian reservations are Federal lands, owned by the U.S. government. Indigenous people living on Indian reservations cannot, for instance, mortgage their homes, because banks won’t accept a mortgage on Federal property. Currently, the titles and rights to less than 3% of land within the United States belong to Indigenous people. The Land Back movement is not about removing anyone who lives here from this land. It’s about recognition of, and respect for Indigenous knowledge and sovereignty, and returning what was violently invaded and occupied. Settler attempts at land management without adequate knowledge or understanding have resulted in many ecosystems pushed to the brink of collapse. Forests are burning, air quality diminishing, the earth and water are heavy with industrial waste threatening the lives of everything dependent upon them.. Be sure to check out Nicholas Galanin's solo exhibition "We Dreamt Deaf", currently on view at @westernwashingtonuniversity 's VU Gallery. It will be up through January 26th. Hours: Mon-Fri, 11am-5 pm. The show "references the alien (European) tradition of settlers bringing beliefs of supremacy, manifest destiny and disregard to Indigenous land. Alien Tradition shares the inability of settler culture to stand by their own words, spoken or written."
