The Glossa Ordinaria, which is Latin for "Ordinary [i.e. in a standard form] Gloss", is a collection of biblical commentaries in the form of glosses. The glosses are drawn mostly from the Church Fathers, but the text was arranged by scholars during the twelfth century. The Gloss is called "ordinary" to distinguish it from other gloss commentaries. In origin, it is not a single coherent work, but a collection of independent commentaries which were revised over time. The Glossa ordinaria was a standard reference work into the Early Modern period, although it was supplemented by the Postills attributed to Hugh of St Cher and the commentaries of Nicholas of Lyra.

Hi Elodie! I was wondering if I might ask about your process for choosing names for the daemons in His Delicious Materials? I have some daemon characters knocking about in the back of my brain, but I’ve never been able to settle on names for them. I know that in His Dark Materials, some daemons have more common names, and some have more fantastical, but beyond that I don’t know much about daemon naming conventions, and yours sound so delightful to hear and say.

Oh jeez sure! I unfortunately love making sweeping decisions and then forcing myself to live up to them.

The only set HDM daemon naming constraints I can recall are that they’re set by the daemon’s parents and thus relate to the parental names and desires; this Stelmaria, Greek, “Star of the sea,” has a son Pantalaimon “multitude of blessings.” But other daemons, such as the nurse who was severed, have names like “Nicholas.” Thus they can be what feels right, I think, with reference to internal family-feeling. people from Lyra’s Oxford are clearly going for Greek names - even the character who’s a “kitchen boy” has the lofty Salcilia, which seems to connect to “salt” - but the witches in HDM give their daemons Finnish names.

I think where possible it can’t be the language you’re reading the story in - I.e. if you’re reading in English you shouldn’t have a daemon named Trustworthy - and be three syllables. It would be ideal if it secretly revealed a piece of character, but could also be an aspiration. Will’s “kirjava” (multicoloured) is a description.

I had a few constraints. I set them early on. I think constraints make things easier but that’s possibly a personality flaw.

One thing that doesn’t happen much in daemon AUs is that I had different species of human to consider. This made me decide that they had to have relatively distinctive naming cultures.

- Bee was the one who sprang into my head without invitation and instantly suggested “wouldn’t it be great if it lengthened into Bibelot, which is French for trinket?” And I was like, such a great idea bestie! Let’s write a novel about you! Maybe two! So if that happens to you, let that happen.

- this led to all half-foots having a daemon naming convention where they had to have three-syllable French names with the first syllable shortening to their everyday name and their long name being reserved for intimates; the short name should shorten to a word preferably in English. At first this was fine and made things easier because the only other half-foot daemons instantly presented themselves as Chatelaine and Chiendegarde. If you have a good convention/restriction it can make things easier at first and makes you sound confident.

- I felt that Greek-inspired names for daemons in OG HDM felt very cool in that setting. Laios is a Greek name IRL (Falin is Irish I think but ignore that) so I mentally fixed the convention of the siblings having Greek names.

- then I used Google Translate to find a word that meant gentle or feathery and found Elafros, which alludes to both, and also having the highly desirable -os ending which matches Laios and obviously creates a cohesive, family feel

- everyone reading this is probably like, no the hell it doesn’t

- I liked the three syllables and sense of parental expectation so I researched it a bit more and settled on it.

- I wanted Laios’s daemon to start with a P, three syllables, Greek and match Falin in some way. I scrolled through the P entries on a 1990’s website with a list of “dead words”. Palinode was chosen for being obviously a cohesive and familial resonance with Falin (rhyming first syllable.) it also shortens to PAL and has connotations of sounding like paladin. She’s Falin’s paladin.

- everyone reading this is probably like, no the hell it doesn’t

- Palinode’s a terrible name actually. Oh well moving on

- I wanted Marcille’s daemon to have a Greek name too, this choice feeling synonymous with a certain expectation of class/education as well as species to me. I wanted it to start with a P because at that point I had read more of the manga and she had a pet bird named Pipi.

- the pyx- beginning is super cute to me because I originally pictured Marcille as being a pixie.

- while scrolling through the list of dead words looking for Greek inspired names starting with py- I saw Pyxis and was instantly in love. It was listed as meaning “small pot for medicine and cosmetics” but upon more research I realised it was a constellation and apparently also means “compass,” all of which felt absolutely perfect.

- Pyxis is an absolutely crap moral compass though

- I wanted Anne to be named Anne but that needed to be longer, so I tried putting the word “shield” into Google Translate and cycling through languages until Welsh gave me Tarian. It means shield and shortens to Anne! It’s also a very pretty word.

- This then set the convention of dwarves getting Welsh names, and at that point I was happier for them to have proper names, so Aneurin (a Welsh men’s name meaning honorable, and shortening to Nye) and Gethin could just be chosen from a list.

- in conclusion it’s a lot of meaning+vibes!

THE HELLS ARE EMPTY: FOR THE DEVILS ARE HERE. this post consists of both the immediate actions taken by king tyland lannister following the high septon's apprehending of the westerland septons, as well as events which take place two weeks later. // @arronlannister , @erenmarbrand , @theowesterling , @nicholaslannisters , @leolefford , @leanderlefford , @alaynefarman

the immediate actions taken:

it is lord leander lefford, as master of whispers, who first hears of contact being made with the septons of the west from the high septon of the starry sept. he relays his concerns in a private audience between king tyland lannister, and the hand of the king, lord eren marbrand.

an emergency small council meeting is called once it is confirmed the septons went to meet the high septon. this act in itself instantly denounced them within the court of the west; branding them traitors. lord theomore westerling conveys this message to the high septon, which is not given a response.

it is made clear that these septons are to be expected to be returned to the court of the west, to be tried by the laws of their anointed king. lord leo lefford and lord nicholas lannister were scheduled to see the high septon within the hallowed halls of the starry sept to ensure this was understood, and return with the septons. instead, they walked in on a service denouncing the faith of the west, king tyland lannister...and saw the westerland septons. both the lords leave oldtown.

THE COURT OF THE WEST DO NOT LEAVE HIGHGARDEN ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE. there are discussions between king tyland and king cedric regarding the actions taken, and the response.

actions taken two weeks later: INSIDE THE STARRY.

lady alayne farman is just another worshipper within the starry sept, veil over her head. she can hear the preaching of the high septon, the hymns, and smoke. she was dressed simply. none know it is her. there are large amounts of crowds within the starry sept as the crowds come to see the high septon: praising his actions for cleansing the city of the whores.

lord theomore westerling is seen in the alcoves of the starry sept, within the shadows, in a discussion with a member of the most devout who belonged to the old way. he is not armed, as is expected within the starry sept. none notice lady farman moving to leave the starry sept.

there is the sound of bells ringing in the distance as the choir boys hand out bread and red wine to the masses who have come to worship. those same innocent hands having already accepted the threatening, suffocating coin of lord adrian serrett. one of the faithful who take the drink is septa lyra, one of the high septon's closest associates.

the high septon continues to talk over the sounds of the congregation. none notice doors opening as the coughing begins. none notice the presence of lord eren marbrand stalking down the aisle. "do not drink that." they were supposed to drink it. it was the plan. the sounds of the coughing became louder, the looks of panic in the eyes of the westerland septons and the innocent congregation as blood seeped from the corner of their mouths. "you have POISONED your congregation to have them repent for their continued loyalty to king tyland of the west. their KING."

there is the attempted denial of the septons of the west. they had remained true to the high septon.; they had betrayed tyland lannister. only, how could they deny it with blood seeping from their mouths? their throats closing up? septa lyra looks toward androw, eyes wide in panic. she foams at the mouth. "holy father..." her body hits marble.

actions taken two weeks later: OUTSIDE THE STARRY.

there is a large number of men of approximately seventy troops on the steps outside of the starry sept, leading all the way down into the courtyard. they originally claimed they were hunting, and were in oldtown to stock up supplies and move forward. now, they claim to have come to collect the westerland septons. those within the group include lord theomore westerling, who has taken his place atop a horse with a grim face. lord adrian serrett. the lefford twins. nicholas lannister. lady alayne farman alongside prince arron lannister. the executioner, lord aslan marbrand.

king tyland lannister himself is at the front of the group of men, eyes fixed upon the doors of the starry. this had been rehearsed. they all knew what was coming next.

the hand of the king emerges: lord eren marbrand proclaims loudly, in a voice that indicated actual grief and shock, that the high septon has murdered holy men within his own halls. poisoned. there is an audible shock amongst the troops of the westerlands and the smallfolk, hands coming over their mouths. for murder to occur within the starry sept? such a sacred building? "bless the septons, sir!" came the cries of the smallfolk, some removing the hats on their head out of respect.

"you will not move us until we have been given our dead." came the words of the westerland men to the members of the faith militant: given so they can string the bodies of traitors up from the walls of lannisport. when violence broke out upon removing to leave, it came swift: there was the screaming of smallfolk, the clash of metal against metal. the sounds of bodies hitting the stone steps with a crunch.

"not within the walls." came the words of the lion king the hour before. the dire warning was no violence would cross to occur within the walls of the starry sept. and as he watched blood seep down the steps, not a inch of blood was spilled within the starry itself.

1) Rank your softest Muse and your toughest Muse. (Personality-wise) I think for softest it would be a tie for Molly or Alexandra. Alexandra is my shy, hopeless romantic book worm while Molly is more extroverted. Still, they're both incredibly sensitive.

Toughest is probably Daniel. He just locks down his emotions lol.

2) Which Muse would blow through $1000 quickly? Delilah for sure. She's just from a very well off family, she that doesn't necessarily seem like a large amount to her.

3) Do any of them have nicknames? Is there a meaning behind them?

Alice - "Allie." She hates the name Alice. Atticus - "AJ." Shortened from Atticus James just because it's a mouthful.

Quite a few of the others have nicknames that are just shortenings of their names.

4) Are any of them up-to-speed on the latest trends? Anyone more old school? Johanna, Delilah, Grant, and Nicholas are up to speed on the latest trends. Carsyn couldn't care less, and same for Daniel.

5) Who has the best relationship with their siblings? Alex, Jo, and AJ. They're a very tightknit family.

6) Karaoke night! Who is likely to grab the mic first and bust out a tune? Probably Elara. She loves performing.

7) Who is least likely to enter a beauty pageant/model? Delilah for sure

8) If your Muses visited a haunted house where actors scare you, who would panic and who would be unfazed? Panic would be Isabelle. Unfazed would be Lucie or Lyra.

9) Are any of your Muses particular about taking certain modes of transportation? Nicholas and Grant like driving nice cars but that's it.

Konstantinos Spiridakos came to America on a student visa. He lands at the college in Willowdale, where he meets and befriends Wilden Lightfoot. It is many years later, however, before the Spiridakos family crosses paths with the Lightfoots, yet again. This time, it is in a place called New Mushroomton, just outside of Detroit. Konstantinos is married now, has two young children - Lyra, who's six, and Angelo, who is three - a lovely young wife, Daphne, expecting a third child, and the shine of hope in their eyes.  It is only once they set down roots, in a small apartment in an impoverished area of this small, Detroit suburb, that the Spiridakos family realizes that, perhaps, America was not the dream Konstantinos had initially believed it to be. 

The rules that governed the city itself were, to put it mildly, ugly. To put it bluntly, they were cruel. The city presented itself as Magick friendly, but the stringent rules and regulations placed upon any Magick were, oftentimes, dehumanizing. The Spiridakos children were taught early on, despite this, to wear their Magick status as a badge of honor, unable to hide it away; it was actively illegal to do so, and would have resulted in hefty consequences none in the family wished to face. 

(Satyr, while not dangerous, had been misinterpreted by myth and false information. Fun-loving, occasionally mischievous, nature spirits, they were now equated to lecherous, hedonistic drunkards. It was this misinterpretation that often found Konstantinos unable to find work, the children unable to find many friends, and Daphne so stressed about her life she lost her child.) 

Life for the Spiridakos family isn't sparkling, but it does become better upon relocating when Konstantinos finds a job - after fleeing from a group of anti-Magicks that had threatened the children, of course - and meeting Laurel Lightfoot.  Konstantinos remembers the name Lightfoot fondly. His children learn to, as well. 

The Spiridakos and Lightfoot children get along like a proverbial house on fire, Ian and Angelo, Lyra and Barley. The children played, got into (and out of!) trouble. Thick as thieves, they were, and Angelo adored his friends. When he’s about ten and Ian eight, however, Ian leaves. The Lightfoots leave. 

For a while, it leaves a bit of a rift. People Angelo cared about – Ian, Barley, his mother – kept leaving. He didn’t quite know why, if it was something about him, or just the place they lived, in general. He learned from that, though. Keep yourself a bit harsher, a bit aloof. Make yourself unapproachable, even mean, and people won’t want to hurt you. Won’t want to leave. 

For a long time, well into his teenage years, Angelo projected himself as a bully, as someone with a temper and an anger under his skin that kept people at a distance. It wasn’t until he was just out of high school, or nearly, and lonely that he realized how much he’d really lost, what he’d messed up having to hide behind thick walls and multiple layers. The only time he was himself was when he flew to Greece to visit family and his mother, when he could find her. Daphne was aloof during those visits, almost timid, like she didn’t want to know the young man her boy had grown into. Like she was afraid to face what she had left behind. He’s twenty-four, now, though. 

Angelo is steadier, calmer. Still with a chip on his shoulder, sure, but he takes it out less on the people around him, those he cares about.  When he was about twenty-two, give or take, Ian Lightfoot reached out. They spoke, reconnected. Became friends again, if you could call it a friendship.

(Angelo certainly hoped that he could).  And, well, he heard all about Swynlake.  So, he figures, why can’t he make a detour, stay for a while? Catch up with Ian properly, see what this town has to offer. Hell, maybe he’ll even decide to stay, for a little while.

What did she want to do today? Usually it was a really simple question, she had so many things she liked doing. She could work on aerial silks or the lyra in the backyard, she could practice with her hula hoop, she could paint something, she could talk with the chickens, she could play with Cardamom, she could work with her throwing knives, she could make some beaded jewelry, she could go for a walk in the woods, she could practice juggling, she could play around with her fans, she could make flower crowns, she could try and bait Nicholas into another fight, but - but -

She didn't want to do any of those things.

And that was alarming. She fished around for some of the more difficult things that took some more planning or co-ordinating.

Did...did she want to get ice cream? No. Did she want to go to the antique shop? No. Did she want to go to the parkour gym? No. Did she want to visit Tío Ricky? No. Did she want to go the Natural History Museum? No.

Going into the office to learn more about rogues? Also no.

Why...why didn't anything sound good? What did she want?

Did...did she just want to lounge about and do nothing? Also no.

She looks over to corner of the ceiling, looking away from Henry, hoping to pass it off as being deep in thought and not trying to hide the tears she can feel burning at the corners of her eyes.

What was happening? Why couldn't she think of anything she wanted to do? No it wasn't just that she couldn't think of anything, she straight up didn't have anything she wanted to do.

She does her best to keep her voice as casual as she can, not wanting to draw attention to how distressing this felt.
