The Gift of Dice - Intro Post
I am Gabriel Caetano (they/them), and I am a queer, Latine parent, TRPG creator, audio producer, and game facilitator (aka GM) from Brazil.
Roleplaying Games
I make tabletop Roleplaying Games, as well as TTRPG-adjacent experiences.
I like fantasy, science fantasy, and weird fantasy the most and I have been more and more invested in looking at games as enablers of social experimentation and questioning.
I like to say that every game I make is a product of excellent taste and developing skill.
You can find my games at https://thegiftofdice.itch.io/
Indie Games Facilitator for Hire
I run and facilitate (aka GM) roleplaying games as a gig.
I have over 100 session under my belt, and growing, and a large catalogue of indie, alternative games to facilitate for players anywhere out there in the world, including Masks, Thirsty Sword Lesbians, Nibiru, Apocalypse Keys, Noctis Labyrinth, Troika!, Blades in the Dark, CBR+PNK, and many more.
You can browse through the dates I setup, or make a custom request.
Politics and Ethics
All TTRPG content has a price tag, except when I think it shouldn't, and all of them should have alternate methods of access for anyone who does not enjoy the privilege of earning dollars, euros, pounds, and other hegemon currencies.
Yet, non-white people, non-het, and non cis-male people anywhere who cannot afford to buy anything I make without putting their safety and well-being financially are welcome to get my stuff for free, one way or another.
I also offer seats for free or at a greatly reduced fee to people in the Global South, where the dollar exchange would make access to my game sessions absolutely crushing.
None of the content I create is compatible with Hasbro or Paizo products, or products by any company or individual that shares their ethics and predatory approach to industrializing an art form, on principle.
Additionally I do not use or rely on artificially generated content to create my games or run my sessions.
Game Design Principles
I've come across this game design manifesto and I've decided to adopt it for my own game design as best as I can and let it evolve as I grow as a game designer and writer.
against coercion: a game design manifesto by JPLeBreton
let players wonder about things and trust them to find answers;
connect players with patterns they find intrinsically fulfilling;
never treat a number going up as an inherently positive or meaningful even;
teach respect for the autonomy and boundaries of all things;
posit alternatives to fantasies of accumulation and extraction;
do not think of emotional responses as something you extract from players;
produce and distribute ethically;
aspire to more than escape.
Whether I'll succeed or fail at following these principles, or even how they will evolve over time, all I can say is let's play to find out.
Kindly, Gabriel Caetano

strange dreams, the feeling of being unknown
(an in-character lore piece for the Mianite RPG)
Falling.
Falling.
Falling.
It's been a month since I've been like truly awake. Aurelia can't explain it, and neither can I. It’s like I’m not here at all, or that I’m not strong enough to exist on the same plane as everyone else. But it's not weakness, nor is it some kind of exhaustion.
It’s just a weight unlike anything I’ve felt before. Jumping in and out of reality mentally, but thank god, not physically.
I’ve returned somewhat to being a hermit, being away from everyone else as much as I can. I don’t really understand what’s keeping me away, but maybe I don’t want to know.
The other guardians can't know what’s been going on. If the legion finds out, I don’t imagine Dianite will be very forgiving with how I’ve become. I mean- I don’t know if they miss me. I don’t want my friends to worry, so I’ve told Aurelia to not tell anyone.
When she went to Nibiru, I just told her to say that I was getting some rest, working on things when I got the chance.
And I don’t think I want them to know.
The thing is, I haven’t dreamed like this in a long time.
But they always start the same.
I’m back home on Astrakhiens. A quiet hum develops through the reeds, lacugrove trees and lilypads, accompanied by a ripple that runs across the surface of the lake. I’m drawn to the reflection of the ender nebula on the water’s surface more than I remember being before, the acquiescent oranges and violet hues dancing across my field of vision, interrupted only by luminescent particles which shine with the same sparkle as the stars in the sky.
Sunflowers my mom had planted the last time she visited me prior to the final stages of the portal experiments still grow in that small patch. The only breed that can grow in End, she had told me, the only breed that could survive the cold of the Void without the sun which had gave it its name.
My old house stands as it always has, a certain surface-of-the-sea like glisten to the smaragdant roof tiles above walls of flavolite, vines from lost time crawling down the corners, tucked kindly away between tree bark. As I turn my head to peer through the lilac stained glass though, the figure inside isn’t me.
The person standing in my house, tinkering with my things isn’t me.
His hair resembles the void as if it were set ablaze, wisps of violet and orange flame flickering off his body with every movement. He’s draped in robes of cerulean, gold and white, engraved with a foreign runic language. The claws on his feet dig deep into the moss on the flooring I never made an attempt to repair. While I cannot see myself, or am sure if I’m even there, I can feel the glass heating up as he approaches the windows.
The closer I get, the less familiar I feel to myself, and I see a face, not my face, appear like a mirage in between gold plated framing.
I don’t remember enough to describe what looked back at me.
What’s more interesting is how the foliage behind me changes as well.
This time, I’m back in the overworld in a flattened limestone cove overlooking the sea on a set of smooth stone stairs. Behind me sits a lighthouse made of copper and maroon wood, at its base sitting a humble stone and spruce home with red windows. A soft sea breeze blows, a subtle clicking awakening the lights throughout the building. Something about this particular structure does not feel inviting. I occasionally can spot a fox and turtle wandering about the red carpet inside, but the doors are never unlocked, despite there being no indication of redstone that would keep it closed.
Most times instead, I am inclined to follow the pathway around the intentionally crafted coastline, adorned with glowing copper ore, which leads me into a winding river laden ravine, cliffsides climbing high into the sky. The farther down this ravine I walk, the more reminiscent of home it starts to feel.
At some point, I reach a house buried deep into the side of the mountain, adorned by peculiar stone walls, and green bamboo tile roofs. It appears desolate, as if no one has lived in it for years. The animal pen to just to the right is inhabited by only two chickens, who for reasons I can’t explain seem spry as ever, as if they were just born.
I have no idea who this home belonged to, but I am always inclined to step inside, only to be met by an open floor, full of dusty chests and half crafted tools, enchantments and redstone scattered about the ground left unfinished- as if their owner had left in a hurry, and without finding a resolution that i think they maybe have had desired. Laments of a time long gone are inscribed into the walls broken by what appears to be unsystematic explosions, creating craters without specific intent.
Within moments of exploring the interiors, dusting off surfaces, the walls of the house seem to close in on me, slowly gaining in rapidity and I am forced to burst through stained and mossy oak doors which had once been rusted copper only moments before.
Stumbling into the woods with empty hands.
I am met by what appears to be overgrown farmland. Unlike the place before, there is not a single animal to be found. What might have been a pool before with a diving board hundreds of meters into the sky is the only thing that looks even remotely normal- the water clear as it can be, a small assortment of tropical fish making its home amongst the rough edged coral and cobblestone at its floor. Above me, runs a network of haphazardly placed dirt and stone bridges connecting three main buildings I think; all together forming the shape of a lightning bolt if someone looked at it from the sky.
The first few times I had this dream, I used to think the thick overgrowth that I find myself sinking into, as if gravity suddenly took a stronger hold of me was comprised of grass, flowers, the kind of thing that grows if you leave your lawn unkempt for long enough.
But it was this past night that I realized it was sunflowers. Stems, leaves, shoots and flowers both fully blossomed and dead petals littering the ground beneath my feet.
Nothing but sunflowers.
It’s then when I look up towards the sky, expecting storm clouds stretching towards the horizon to be the cause of a sudden onset darkness that had blocked the sky, the only light now coming from a lava feature across from the main house, netherrack spilling out of the crackled obsidian portal that sat at its center adorned by just the slightest bit of nether foliage.
Instead I am met by the soft glow of stars, the gentle hum of the void and the enigmatic glow of a forming ender nebula coming over the edge of the world.
The ground beneath me shifts into something like a cerulean ocean set on fire, glowing with abstract patterns of aqua and cyan, my footsteps leaving ripples across it. The water itself is shallow, I don’t sink, I don’t swim, I just simply stand on its surface.
I feel inclined to keep going, as I walk across a barren nothing for what feels like hours. Eventually, a face appears in the sky- A pair of pearlescent eyes, surrounded by a multicolor iridescent nebula, ever shifting. A symbol not unlike to the one on that appeared on the back of my shirt manifests above her head between curls, and one by one purple eyes appear across their cheeks.
Never once has the face spoken to me, but always waits till I get close, offers his hand-
And I wake up again.

Scooby Doo: Solving the Apocalypse Game
So, I've been reading this Webtoon called The Lone Necromancer where the world suddenly has fantasy RPG mechanics like a reverse isekai story. And it made me think of an even darker version of Mystery Incorporated plus that one apocalypse comic series for the show.
The Lone Necromancer basically has people suddenly being forced to choose 'character classes' (and later sub-classes) before having the world populace try and survive a 'story' until the end in hopes of players getting a 'good ending'. Players and people who didn't choose cards have to endure the game trying to kill them by summoning monsters like goblins, orcs, and so on, but some rules cause the players to be punished if they break them. The story was pretty similar to Scooby Doo, too. Meet a jerk, take them down, rinse, and repeat.
The character classes are between one star and five stars, with five stars being the strongest and having something to do with creating or strengthening an army. Players can also meet special conditions to gain divination and the powers of different gods and mythical beings.
I really thought it fit with the vibe of Mystery Incorporated, where the monsters and danger became very real. Here, instead of solving the mystery of the old Mystery Inc. or Nibiru, they'd have to solve the mystery of who is behind this game and stop them before they destroy Earth.
While doing this, they can go up against Nibiru and other beings not related to the one who made this survival game who are taking advantage of the system, like Professor Pericles.
Here are a few character classes I think would go well with Mystery Inc.
Scooby
Necromancer (5 stars): Both are the titular characters and it would be funny for Scooby to lead an army of skeletons. All the bones he can eat and plenty of ways to scare him. Plus, he could get the divination of Cerberus.
Shaggy
Ranger class: A type of ranger class fits Shaggy so well since it usually entails moving around a lot and being friends with animals.
Velma
Elementalist (4/5 stars): I thought it would be funny to give the most scientific member of the gang a magic class where she can study and learn how to wield the elements.
Arcane Inventor (4 stars): A class that lets Velma use her scientific knowledge to make equipment from the drops of the enemy.
Fred
Trap Master (3 stars): I don't think I need to say much here.
Inventing classes like Blacksmith or Alchemist.
Daphne
Martial Artist (3 stars): I loved it when Daphne knew how to fight. I thought it would be cool if she grew to be the best close-range fighter of the gang as time went on.
Enchanter (3 star): Mainly something to let her spend more time with Fred and help him build things for the gang.

Perhaps, MU inhabitants may feel that Great Beings may have created other worlds, and other Great Spirits, even?
It is sort of a situation similar to Nibiru RPG - populace is only aware of its technogenic environment and existence of things beyond it would be framed within that understanding. Matoran don't know Mata Nui is an absurdly large humanoid robot floating through depths of space because, well, they never saw the outside.
Idea of "other Matoran Universes" would be the peak of speculative for MU inhabitants. With how rare Olmak masks are, very few ever saw of them, though the Toa that received Olmak from Artakha during the first Ignika rescue operation (same Olmak being then used by Makuta on Destral) could've left information about its power.
Sooo, Matoran sci-fi, when trying to tackle a "different world", would involve portals because they don't know if there is any other way to reach any "other worlds".
I noticed that theres no word exactly for universe in matoric, even though the concept of a universe and even a multiverse or alternate timelines is known to the matoran through the Kanohi Olisi and Olmek. There a reason why this is the case?
The closest term for what you described would probably be one of the following:
Whether or not Matoran and other MU inhabitants would properly distinguish between their world and alternate universes/timelines as separate and distinct "universes" is an open question, I think. I could imagine them viewing the different realms made accessible by the Olmak as simply extensions of their world, for example--just places housed in "another dome".

“We are Enigma, and we are many.”
Another RPG character, this time from a sci-fi horror system called Nibiru. As a Vagabond of the Collective our memories are from the perspective of many, rather than one single source and we are allowed to share those memories with others should we choose to. It’s a home brew habitat the GM made for me, and while I haven’t gotten to play more than a couple sessions with it, I’m excited to see what I can do with it.
Feel free to check it out over on ramblinmantv’s twitch stream on Wednesday nights, 7pm eastern, 8pm central, 10 pm pacific, or peep the vod’s on his YouTube channel under the same name.

Being a paid GM is its own adventure
It's been close to a year since I started running games for money.
I started out with a few one-shots of Masks and Thirsty Sword Lesbians until I got to run a few weekly adventures of Masks, Troika!, Noctis Labyrinth, Nibiru, Apocalypse Keys and more.
Given that being a paid GM has become my main income source, it is stressful at times. There are other downsides too, which I could talk about another time.
BUT
I have never played so many games, and for so long, until I became a paid GM.
I got to take part in the tales of Adjo and Nabi in their explorations of the haunted ravines of Noctis Labyrinth.
I got to see a bunch of teen superheroes like Nini, Eli, Selena, Justin, Arthur, Matt, Jake, Val, Cherry, and many others, as they met or faced divine parenthood, evil corporate bosses, criminal overlords, Florida Men, an eldritch goose, the Fairy Godmother, time/space-screwing warlocks, and, worse of all, PROM.
I got to see mythical avatars such as Enkidu, Boudicca, and others, as they traveled the Tree of Life.
I get to see Vagabonds weave the Chronicles of the Skyless World in Nibiru, a whole world contained in a massive space station.
I get to see some really messed up monsters teeter at the edge of becoming the Harbingers of Apocalypse, as they try to stop the apocalypse themselves.
And those are just some of the adventures I got to experience first hand.
Roleplaying games are both passion and work, and that is its own can of worms to unpack since capitalism pushes individuals to monetize their passions to survive.
But make no mistake, I thoroughly enjoy what I do and the players I get to bring along in this ride, and while I am conscious that there will be a time I will change and might need to step down, I will savour every single moment of it with is ups and downs.

Weekend Gaming Plans and Preparations
Photo by Nika Benedictova on Pexels.com This weekend, I’m diving back into the chaotic world of Borderlands GOTY Edition. I’ve decided to switch things up this time by playing Roland, the soldier class. His turret skills and support capabilities should be a fun change from my usual picks, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the game feels with a different playstyle. I’m already bracing myself…

ANKUR - "Land of the first people" is a game setting supplement for the tabletop role-playing game ANKUR. The book details the city-states of Kumat, Meluha, and Zimbabwe; located in the continent of Mundwazi (Africa). The book introduces new professions, skills, and weapons to help make characters from this setting more unique. Inside you'll also find a host of new creatures, places of interest, NPCs, organizations and adventure hooks that will help GMs immerse their players in this expanded world.
What is ANKUR?:
For the un-initiated, ANKUR (Kingdom of the gods) is a sci-fi tabletop roleplaying game based on a mixture of ancient mythology and the ancient astronaut theory. It was the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2017. It uses a D12 system.
The core game focuses on two worlds; Nibiru (the collective name of the planet Nibir and its 4 moons) and Ki (Earth). They are forever linked by ancient cataclysmic events that shaped both worlds. Nibir, a wandering planetoid originally from the "Bow star" Sirius, entered our system and collided with Ki nearly 4 billion years ago. This event created the asteroid belt, and gave Ki it's current axial tilt and rate of spin. Due to this mingling, Ki was left with two moons and assumed its current orbit around the sun (Nuru-Zal).
Nibir was sent hurtling into the void along a 3,600 year elliptical orbit around both suns of this binary "Zalar" system; Nuru-Zal & Etu-Zal. Yes, like most star systems, our sun also has a counterpart called Etu-Zal. It is a brown dwarf about 539 AU from Nuru-Zal and is virtually invisible from Ki (Earth). Both worlds developed life sustaining properties but every 3,600 years they would once again come near one another; causing planetary upsets.
Approximately 1 million years ago, Nibir's planetary core started to slow its rate of spin and Nibir's magnetic field began to wane. It's thick atmosphere began to disperse, giving the planet the appearance of having fiery wings. The once active volcanism and geothermal activity which sustained life on the planet began to calm. It was discovered that Manna (mono-atomic gold powder), if dispersed into the upper atmosphere, could generate the magnetic field necessary and insulate the planet. The beings of Nibiru (known as Nibru-ene) found gold very plentiful on Ki, and established several mining colonies for its extraction and conversion into Manna.
The Nibru-ene workers began to notice changes while on Ki. Differences between the torsion fields of the two planets, generated by each planet's magnetic core, caused Nibru-ene workers who spent long periods of time on Ki to experience shortened life spans. This combined with the back-breaking work of gold extraction, caused the workers of Nibiru to revolt. It was decided to genetically create a species of slaves to do the labor using primitive hominids existing on Ki. Thus the Lu-ki (Earth-men) were born!
30,000 years ago, Ki's second and smallest moon, drifted out of orbit causing cataclysmic floods worldwide. The presence of two moons had kept the sea level around the equator over 400 feet higher than today. Once the gravitational force of the second moon was lost, a tsunami of biblical proportions washed over the entire planet. It was known as the Great flood or the Deluge. Though much was destroyed, the Lords of Nibiru have since rebuilt great cities on Ki and have once again resumed mining operations. As for the original slaves, few survived the flood. However, though Lu-ki life cycles are short, they breed quickly. In the five thousand years since the flood, mankind has become plentiful once more.
The Nibru-ene created beings of great variety in order to accommodate different tasks. There are five player character species and many more non-playable NPC species to discover. ANKUR is a world where Yeti porters and pygmy nomads walk the streets among Neanderthal soldiers and cone-headed scribes. ANKUR is a melting pot of species and ideas. The "gods" of antiquity are real and lead the populace from their fortress-like Ziggurats. Prehistoric animals, remnants of the time before the great flood, still roam the countryside.
Previous Reviews:
“Interesting setting, efficient rules set, clear respect for the source material. What more could you ask for?” - Benjamin P.
“It is not often that an excellent and original RPG idea gets a chance to be published; Ankur is both of these. It is clearly a labor of love by its creator, who is comparable to the greats of the industry, and has clearly put much work and research into Ankur. If you are looking for an original setting which has been well composed, I recommend it.” – Ronald P.
“I have to say I am very happy with Ankur. I'm so in love with this game, as it is something I have wanted to explore as an RPG setting for a very long time. So thank you for your time, energy, and creativity in this endeavor. The system is very unique.” – Brian R.
What's New?:
Now, the people and lands of the African continent (Mundwazi) will be detailed within the ANKUR game world.
My goal is to create a supplement for ANKUR that details the people and environment of Mundwazi (Africa). I will pull from real-world African mythologies & customs and add a sci-fi twist to create what I believe will be a great setting to adventure in. The first ANKUR book primarily detailed the region of Shinar (middle-east). My hope is to eventually provide detailed supplements for all the continents/sub-continents (Africa, India, Asia, the Americas, and Australia). Below are excerpts from the ANKUR core rules book on the 3 major city-states in Mundwazi (Africa).
Ku-mat: Located 800 miles east of the Burannu River, this city-state straddles the fertile banks of the mighty Id-teru River. Ku-mat is the wealthiest and most powerful city-state west of Shinar. Gold and other resources flow down river from as far away as Zimbabwe for processing, and shipment to other ports; including off-world destinations.
Meluhha: Approximately 1,000 miles south of Ku-mat lies the wilderness trade center of Meluhha. This trading post/way station lies on the Id-teru River and is surrounded by a huge wooden palisade that guards a multitude of storehouses. Hunters, gatherers, and prospectors from the surrounding wilderness regions, bring all manner of raw resources into Meluhha to be sold and shipped to Ku-mat for processing. Gold, copper, lapis lazuli, leather, and ivory can be found in abundance here. The trade guilds of Meluhha control all river transportation into Ku-mat, and there are many legitimate and illegitimate taxes, and tariffs on goods leaving the city.
Zimbabwe: This was the location of the first Nibru-ene city on Ki approximately 370,000 years before the great flood. Its name means “the great enclosure.” The city’s boundaries once stretched for 1,000 miles in diameter, but it was utterly destroyed by the great flood. A modest effort was undertaken to build a new city in its place, but it is a fraction of the size, and quality of the original. Gold is still found in great quantity here, and mining operations are in full swing, but much to the detriment of the Dara workers who are often worked to death to exceed quotas. The Lugal of Zimbabwe is rumored to be skimming the gold profits for their own gain which forces the local people to work harder to meet the official quotas. There is an air of distrust and rebellion here.
