[3.5k] luke hits the west coast for his first long roadie of the season with some unsettling feelings about leaving jersey for so long. who would have thought his biggest problem on the road would end up being looking at his caller id over the actual hockey games he was playing? (smut)
series masterlist
.
hockey boy: u up?
Luke Hughes had never felt like more of a fuck boy than he did the moment he had sent the text—which was ironic when he was quite literally the opposite of a fuckboy.
He hadn’t even meant for it to come across that way. Genuinely, he did not.
Despite being officially in the NHL for over a month now, this was the first time Luke was going on a roadie across the country whilst wearing the New Jersey red on his back. Most of their away games had been in nearby cities, where they would maybe spend a day or two in another city before returning to Jersey.
But this was the longest one yet—a full ten days in the west coast for games against San Jose, LA and Anaheim.
He wanted to say it wasn’t a big deal, that he was used to the life of hockey taking him to new cities and states. But things were different in the NHL. The stakes were higher, the games meant more even this early in the season, things just felt a lot more intense.
But it felt stupid to confess as much to his brother or any of the other boys when he literally played in the playoff games last season, when the stakes were the Cup.
However, Luke couldn’t shake off the weird intensity of the roadie. He played off Jack’s concerned looks with some bullshit excuse that he was tired, that he was just struggling to sleep these days. It didn’t wave away his older brother’s concern but it got him off his back for a little bit. It let Jack focus on a different concern and not the real reason (that felt borderline childish to admit) that he felt on edge about leaving Jersey for so long.
And it meant that Luke was laying in the hotel room alone whilst Jack was out with some of the other guys on the team for dinner, embracing the one free evening they had before the game tomorrow against San Jose.
He had flipped through a variety of shows on the tv and scrolled through endless apps on his phone before he gave in, his finger hovering over the send button before he clicked it.
It hadn’t even hit him how his text sounded until your reply came through a few moments later.
cherry🍒: damn hughes
cherry🍒: you gonna ask me what i’m wearing next?
His cheeks instantly burned hot, something quite like embarrassment and awkwardness bubbling in the pit of his stomach.
At least it was hard to focus on the upcoming games when he was too busy thinking about the quickest ways to flee the country and change his identity.
hockey boy: absolutely not
Luke’s fingers moved fast on the screen, already drafting up a second message when your reply came through.
cherry🍒: rude :(
cherry🍒: maybe I had something special on for you
And that was enough to make his brain go blank, the sentence he was in the middle of typing long forgotten as he stared at the words on his screen. He almost felt guilty how quickly his imagination came up with images of you back on his bed, just like his birthday party, in something short and sexy and—
He almost dropped his phone on his face when it began buzzing in his hand, scrambling to sit up in his bed as he answered.
“H-Hello?” He cleared his throat, his face burning warmer when he heard your laugh on the other side.
“You sound a little caught off, Hughes,” you teased, lighthearted and playful. “Did I interrupt something?”
“I—no!” Luke exclaimed, though something inside him relaxed when you laughed again. “I didn’t…I didn’t mean for it to come off like that. I swear. I just wanted to talk to you.”
“I didn’t think so considering it’s been five minutes since my last message and you hadn’t replied yet. Not really setting the mood there.”
He shook his head, his lips twitching upwards. “So you’re saying you’re not wearing something special for me?”
“Unfortunately not. Just some sweats and a hoodie.”
“Hm,” Luke hummed before frowning, taking a quick glance at the time on his phone before he swore under his breath. “Shit, I didn’t wake you up, did I?”
You laughed and something in his chest tightened as he imagined the soft smile on your face as you did so. “No, I couldn’t get to sleep. I was just watching some random episode of The Vampire Diaries before you called.”
Luke blinked. “The what?”
You fell silent for a moment. “Tell me you’re joking.”
He paused as well before he spoke in the most unconvincing voice. “I’m joking?”
“Forget watching it, how have you never heard of it?!”
“I don’t know!” Luke defended weakly, shuffling back further against the pillows. “Is this your subtle way of telling me to watch it?”
“No!”
He frowned. “No?”
“I want to watch it with you. I want to see your reactions.”
Luke snorted but he didn’t disagree, something fond and warm bubbling in the pit of his stomach at your insistence. “Fine, deal,” he mused. “But it would have at least given me something to do.”
“Wow, is Jack that boring of a roommate?”
He laughed. “Nah, he went out with some of the other guys for dinner.”
“You didn’t feel like joining?”
“Not really,” he admitted.
“How come?”
“Just…didn’t feel like it,” he said, his fingers tugging on the drawstrings of his hoodie as the spiralling thoughts began to creep in again. Like a reminder he wasn’t just lying on his bed back in Jersey talking away to you on the phone, that he was actually on the other side of the country.
And it seemed like you sensed his reluctance, the shift in his voice like he seemed distant and you wanted to pull him back in.
“So you try to sext me instead?” Your voice was playful and taunting and he could imagine the smirk on your face so clearly.
“Shut up,” he groaned, his cheeks burning once again. “I didn’t—”
“You so did.”
“That was not my intention at all,” he retorted.
“Damn, Hughes, didn’t take you for a phone sex kind of a guy?”
Luke could only thank some superior being above that it wasn’t a facetime call, that you couldn’t see how bad he was blushing. “I am neither a sexting or phone sex kind of guy.”
“Boo, it’s more fun than you would think.”
His nose scrunched up. “I don’t know.”
“Don’t knock it until you try it, Luke.”
…
Despite being in two very different states, Luke had found himself on the phone with you most nights of the roadie so far.
It wasn’t really a co-dependent thing, like Jack liked to tease him about when he caught Luke waiting for your message saying you were free to call after the game in LA. It was a similar feeling he had with his friends back in Michigan or his brothers, this strong urge to tell you things. He wanted to share it with you, he wanted to tell you about something stupid Jack did in the locker room or the weird drink Curtis smuggled him at dinner.
And in turn, he wanted to hear about your day too. He wanted to hear about how the nice barista at the coffee shop on the way to work gave you a free cookie because she fucked up your order by accident. He wanted to hear about the way your upstairs neighbour had taken up tap dancing and seemed to only find eleven o’clock at night the most appropriate time to practise. He just wanted to hear you talk.
Luke was at least self-aware enough to realise he was being a bit insane with the phone calls every night when he was only gone for over a week. But day six into a ten day roadie and he just kind of wished he was chilling on your couch when listening to these stories rather than a nondescript hotel room he shared with his brother with limited privacy.
However, the phone calls had become such a routine over the last few days that he didn’t even think twice when he picked up his buzzing phone, answering and putting it on speaker as he walked towards his suitcase in only a towel.
“Hey, I’ve been waiting for your call,” Luke said, an easy smile on his face as he quickly grabbed some clothes to change into after his shower.
“Really? I didn’t realise you missed me that much. I miss you too, dude.”
Luke froze, his eyes widening as he snapped his gaze back towards his phone. He quickly grabbed it off his bed, letting out a soft ‘fuck’ when he realised it was Ethan, not you.
“Luke? You still there?”
“Uh yeah,” Luke cleared his throat. “Sorry, I just came out of the shower. So, uh, what’s up?”
“I caught the game, just wanted to make sure you were alright. Looked like a tough game but you were killer out there, bud.”
He paused, his lips twitching upwards. “You watched the game?”
“Don’t sound so surprised, dude. The boys watch every game we can. Our boy is in the big leagues! We gotta support you.”
“I didn’t know,” he admitted, his chest tightening a little.
“We miss you on the team, gotta get our fix somehow,” Ethan joked, lighthearted and playful.
And yet, Luke felt a wave of guilt wash over him. Despite flying out for his birthday party, he hadn’t really been messaging the boys back in Michigan as much as he should have. He knew they were also giving him space to settle into the NHL lifestyle and they were busy with classes and such, but his own surprise from Ethan calling confirmed enough that he needed to reach out more.
“I miss playing with you guys too,” Luke confessed, and it was true. He loved the Devils and he loved living out his dream but a small part of him itched to be back on the ice with his UMich boys again.
“Yeah but you never threw us around like that.”
Luke let out a groan, ignoring Ethan’s laughs. “I didn’t mean to knock him over like that, it was just the momentum!”
Ethan’s laughs only got louder.
…
It was the night before the Anaheim game when Jack had all but bolted out the room, muttering something about hanging out with Trevor and that he would be back before dinner.
In all honesty, Luke didn’t question it much. He just waved his brother off, saying he was going to have a small nap before he started getting ready for whatever restaurant Trevor had booked for them (assuring that it would fit their diet plan but Luke wasn’t convinced). Between the travelling and training on the road, Luke found himself more exhausted than he was from back-to-back games in Jersey.
And he genuinely was going to nap until his phone buzzed with a message from you and he found himself dialling your number before he could help himself.
“A call already? You didn’t even give me a chance to try sexting you.”
He rolled his eyes. “I don’t see what the point is.”
“I like hearing you get all flustered and nervous.”
“Yeah but it’s not really the same thing, is it?” He commented, running a hand through his curls before tugging his hood back over his head. “Surely it’s just a bit…awkward.”
“It can be hot if you do it right,” you corrected him. “Personally, I think phone sex is better but it can be fun to sext too. Like a thrill, you know?”
“Yes because nothing sounds sexier than talking about sex,” he mused.
“It’s not like that,” you laughed, shuffling around on the other side of the phone. “Think of it like…foreplay.”
His brows furrowed together. “In what way?”
“You aren’t together but you’re telling each other what you would want to do if you were. What you wish you could be doing. And you’re listening to it all, listening to them get off to your words.”
Luke swallowed harshly. “It still sounds awkward.”
There was a pause on the other side. “Yeah?”
“Yeah,” he breathed out, shifting a little in his spot. “Wouldn’t it make more sense to facetime them and see them?”
“It’s about using your imagination, Luke,” you hummed, sounding amused by his grasp on phone sex. “It’s about taking the scraps of what they tell you and letting your brain run wild with it.”
He let out an unconvinced hum.
“Still sceptical?”
“Maybe.”
There was a small pause before you spoke again. “You’re alone, right?”
“Uh, yeah,” Luke nodded, even if you couldn’t see him. “Jack won’t be back for another few hours so—”
“So you can be a good boy for me?”
His brain went blank.
“C’mon, Luke.” He could almost hear the smirk in your voice. “Remember what we said about words?”
“Yeah,” he let out a shaky breath. “Yeah, I can be…good.”
“I know you can, you’re always so good f’me,” you commented, so nonchalant and casual like your worlds didn’t make his heart beat a little faster. “Tell me what you’re doing right now.”
“Uh,” he cleared his throat. “I’m lying in bed, talking to you. But you know that—”
“What are you wearing?”
Luke glanced down at himself, the Devils branded hoodie and UMich sweatpants hardly the sexiest of outfit choices but he muttered out his response regardless. “Isn’t that the exact line you teased me about earlier?”
“You telling me you’re wearing something special just for me?”
He snorted, despite himself. “Hardly.”
“That’s fine. You look better without anything anyway. A shame you’re all the way in California, would’ve been nice to have you all to myself.”
He gulped. “Is this where I use my imagination to guess what you’d do to me?”
“If you want,” you said, laughing softly and it almost felt like you were right there beside him. “Or I could tell you how I miss hearing those pretty noises you make when you come, the little moans you let out when I touch you.”
“Shit,” he muttered. “How do you just say those things so…easily?”
“Because I know what I like and I’m confident with saying what I want. And I really like making you come, you’re always so sweet. You get so blushy and shy, it’s cute. I could only imagine what you’d be like when I get my mouth on you.”
Luke squirmed, his hand reaching down to press down on the length of his cock like it would ease the way he was twitching at her words.
“Would you like that, Luke?”
“Y-Yeah,” he breathed out, nodding even if you couldn’t see him.
“Bet you would look so pretty, all shy and nervous to touch me even if you wanted to,” you continued, his eyes fluttering shut like he could pretend you were really in the room with him, like you were really whispering all of this in his ear. “But I would want you to, Luke. I would wanna feel your hands in my hair, wanna see you take control.”
“I would,” he mumbled out, his hand slowly stroking himself over his sweatpants as he imagined it. As he imagined being sat on your couch, with you kneeling between his legs and your eyes glued on his reactions. It made his whole body feel hot and flustered.
“Yeah, baby? You’d take control? Fuck my mouth?”
He was almost embarrassed by the noise he let out.
“Are you touching yourself right now? Letting your imagination fill in the blanks?”
“Mhm,” he nodded.
“Good, baby, good. Keep touching yourself, keep making yourself feel good.”
“Wish it was you,” he managed to mutter out, his cock straining under the fabric of his boxers and sweatpants. However, any embarrassment or lingering awkwardness was long gone as he pushed them down to his knees, not even bothered to kick them off as he got his hand on himself.
“Yeah? Me too, baby. I wish I was with you now, could watch you squirm and beg f’me with your dick down my throat.”
“Fuck,” he hissed, squeezing the base of his cock as he tried to mimic the night of his birthday, to mimic the feeling of your hand on him instead. “That’s…vulgar.”
You laughed, and it shouldn’t have been so hot to him but it was. “Too much? You don’t want me to talk about how badly I wish that it was you touching me right now?”
“You’re touching yourself right now?” It was almost a wheeze, like the air had been knocked out of his lungs and it hadn’t even hit him until that moment that you were in the same position as him.
“Mhm,” you hummed, all sweet and high-pitched and it reminded him of the noise you made just before you came on his fingers. “If I was more patient, I would’ve got a toy. Would’ve felt way better.”
“Toy?” He rasped.
“Jealous?” You teased, unaware of the way Luke turned his head to the side, biting down on his pillow to hold back his groans as he continued to stroke himself. “I’ll show you when you’re back.”
“Show me on yourself?”
“I can use them on you too, pretty boy, if you could handle it.”
“I…could,” he muttered out, listening to the breathy, moany laugh on the other side of the phone.
“We’ll see,” you hummed. “Maybe I’ll send you a video for your next roadie. Keep you occupied while you’re away.”
“Nuh uh,” he bit out, shaking his head. “This. I like this. I like hearing your voice.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” he repeated, his stomach twisting as his thumb swiped over the head of his cock and rubbed the small bead of precum along his slit. “S’close.”
“Come f’me, wanna hear you come.”
It was a bit of a mindfuck if Luke was completely honest with himself. The pleasure running down his spine, leaving his body hot and heavy and just as good as it did when he was with you didn’t make sense to him. Listening to the little breathy moans and whines you let out when he came all over his hand, as he listened to you get yourself off shouldn’t have made his dick twitch so soon. He shouldn’t have been able to make himself come so hard just from some dirty talk from you, and yet he had.
Though, Luke didn’t have a lot of explanations when it came to the way you made him feel.
“You still there?”
“Yeah,” he hummed, his eyes still shut as he laid on the bed, practically melting into the sheets beneath him. “Kinda need that nap now.”
You snorted. “You should clean up before you fall asleep.”
“Five minutes,” he murmured out, a lazy smile on his face as your laugh echoed through the phone.
…
He was rushing to button up his shirt when his phone rang again.
He was already running late for the reservations Trevor made for dinner (if the constant stream of messages from Jack was telling him anything) and his nap lasted longer than he expected. But he couldn’t bite back his smile as he reached for his phone, his thumb already swiping to answer the call as he rummaged through his suitcase to find his cologne.
“You’re out of luck if you’re wanting to go for a round two,” Luke mused once the call had connected, an odd wave of confidence in his voice as he spoke.
“Round two of what?”
Luke froze, yanking his phone away from his ear to see Quinn’s name on his screen. He let out a muttered ‘what the fuck’ under his breath, an odd sense of deja vu from his phone call with Ethan washing over him before he quickly answered his eldest brother.
“Uh, nothing,” he laughed off, resisting the urge to yank on his own hair after he had spent the better part of the last fifteen minutes trying to make his curls look presentable. “Just some…exercise challenge thing Jack and I were trying out.”
“And you think he would call you about it? Aren’t you two together right now?”
“Yes. No!” Luke shook his head at himself. “No, he’s in Nico’s room right now.”
“I thought you were getting dinner with Trevor?”
“Right,” Luke laughed once again, awkward and strained. “We are. He just…had to tell Nico something first. You know Jack! Just…always attached to Nico’s hip.”
There was a moment of silence before Quinn spoke again. “Are you feeling okay?”
“I feel great, actually! Speaking of, I need to go so I’ll call you later. Okay, great, bye!”
He slammed the small red button until the call disconnected, throwing his phone down on his bed and letting out a long, deep sigh. He really needed to start looking at his phone before answering calls, it was getting a bit ridiculous.
Luke finished getting ready, shoving some shoes on and making his way towards the elevator as he began typing out a message before slipping his phone into his pocket, already preparing himself for Jack’s whining about how late he is by the time he reached the lobby.

y/ndevils00 if you’re allergic to sappiness, you may wanna keep scrolling tonight!
first of all, i’m so proud of ALL my boys tonight! all 5 of our goal scorers, the assisters, and the ones who just played their asses off tonight!
now is where it gets sappy!
my jacky: you broke a 22 year old franchise points record tonight. YOU did that. i always knew you would do it, and i’m so grateful that i was there to see it happen. you’re my (real) best friend, my love, my heart, the father to my cat, and the best hockey player i’ve ever seen (sorry boys). the talent that you possess is constantly leaving me awestruck, and i can’t wait to see what you achieve in the future. i can’t imagine the past 3 years without you, and i hope i never have to live a future without you either. i am so unbelievably proud of you. congratulations, my sweet boy. lil satan and i love you to pluto! <3
my lukey: my little (not so little) brother for the past 3 years. for some context, i met luke when he came to a devils game literally the same month i started working for the team. jack introduced me to him and lukey and i hit it off. i ended up sitting with him at the game, we exchanged numbers, and i adopted him as my own little brother very quickly. when luke was chosen in the 2021 draft, i cried tears of joy; but those tears were nothing compared to the ones i shed tonight. my baby brother made his nhl debut tonight and i couldn’t be happier for him. i look forward to seeing you absolutely kick ass and show everyone in this league how incredibly talented you are. congratulations on your debut, smush! i love you! <3
p.s. rasmus dahlin, i am in your walls. stay away from my boyfriend.

catching fire au | the underdog
jack hughes x hockey!player
summary: training camp
warning(s): cursing, jack's an asshole!!
a/n: send in some asks for the au <3 i kinda hate this, but hey im done w/ college apps and am ready to write woo
taglist (send in an ask or dm me if u wanna be on the taglist for this au!): @hockeyboysarehot
THERE’S A REASON no one takes a chance on the underdog. “She’s not fast enough, she’s not strong enough, she’ll get hurt.” But they don’t know Riley Dell. No one knew Riley Dell; of her capabilities, her strengths, her weaknesses.
But this year, she was going to make a name of herself—no matter what, or who, stood in her way.
SECT. I: TRAINING CAMP.
Media day was a living hell. The interviews consisted of the same tasteless questions: “How do you feel being the first female player in the NHL?” and “How are you going to measure up to the physicality of the other players in the league?” While everyone else was getting questions about their actual gameplay; how they’ll navigate their weaknesses and hone in on their strengths, Riley was getting compared to every single player imaginable.
And the pictures and videos weren’t any better. The photographers suggested that she layed off on the gloves and stick and instead held makeup—fucking makeup. Why the the fuck would she be holding a mascara wand on the ice? The entire day felt pointless. Not a single person took her seriously, and if she called them out, they would accuse her of complaining. She already got the “privilege” of being drafted, and now she wants to complain? Doesn’t look too great.
The day after, everyone hit the ice for actual training. Finally, a time where she could prove that she deserved to be there; that she earned her spot; that Riley Dell was a force to be reckoned with.
The training camp roster was split into three groups: A, B, and C. Throughout the weekend, the groups were to scrimmage, playing each team once. Group A was the one to keep your eye on. The goaltenders consisted of Tyler Brennan and Vitek Vanecek; defenseman being Brendan Smith, Colin Miller, Luke Hughes, Cal Foote, Michael Vukojevic, Kevin Bahl, and Joe Gambardella; and forwards being Tyce Thompson, Michael McLeod, Curtis Lazar, Max Willman, Jesper Bratt, Tyler Toffoli, Flip Engras, Tomas Nosek, Jack Hughes, and Riley Dell.
“Lindy fucking hates us,” Jack groaned upon seeing Riley tying her laces on the bench as groups A and B skated around the practice facility, getting ready to battle in their first scrimmage of the training camp. “That’s why he gave us Riley, right? To get back at us for not winning in the playoffs.”
Luke skated around his older brother, watching as Jack eyes Riley. “I don’t know why you hate her so much. She hasn’t even stepped foot on the ice yet, Jacky.”
“It’s more than the ice, Luke,” Jack turned to the younger boy, annoyance laced in his voice. “Once she joins the team, the entire dynamic will be off. What will happen to the locker room, Luke, or what will happen when we celebrate our wins? Is she gonna come to the bars with us? It’s stupid, Luke.”
“It’s one girl, Jack. The locker room will be fine, and what’s wrong with her coming to the bars? If anything’s stupid, it’s you, man,” Luke scoffed. “Now come on, being an asshole isn’t gonna win us this game,” Luke said, skating towards the rest of the team.
Once Riley’s laces were tired, she jetted off towards the ice, landing in front of their star player. “Hi, I’m Riley. You must be Jack,” she smiled softly, hand out for him to shake, but when he never stuck out his, she retracted it quickly. “So, I heard you had a career-high last season. Sounds like a dream.”
“Yeah,” Jack grumbled, skating beside her.
“Um,” Riley bit her cheek, thinking up things to say. Jack wasn’t much of a conversationalist, she thought. “Are you more of a toe-to-heel guy or heel-to-toe?”
Tired of hearing her voice, Jack spun around, stopping Riley in her tracks. “I don’t care that you got drafted to this team. Fitzgerald, and Lindy, and everyone else in this organization are going to realize they made a mistake and send you back to wherever you came from.” Venom pricked his tongue as the words smacked Riley one by one. Even the team didn’t like her. Driving his shoulder into hers, Jack watched her face turn from shock to complete anger. “Hope you didn’t unpack your bags, rookie.”
Swallowing the lump in her throat, Riley stood there, unmoveable. She wasn’t going to cry. She wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction, prove everything he assumed about her. She wasn’t going to let him win. Closing her eyes, she breathed in, out, and thought about every way she could make Jack Hughes’ life a living hell. Dramatic, but who knew there were real devils on this team?
“Nice job out there, Dell,” Nico smiled at Riley, nudging her shoulder as they bounded into the locker room. “Don’t worry about Hughesy, he’s a softie once you get to know him.”
“If he ever gives me the chance to know him,” Riley sighed.
The game was a total train-wreck. I mean, their team won, but Riley was practically fighting for her life out there. Every single time she made it on the ice, Jack smashed her into the boards, or stole the puck from her, or never gave her the puck at all. His hate was evident and the entire team, not just team A but the entire Devils organization, could see it. How were they supposed to play an entire season together, when they could barely play one scrimmage?
“Don’t let that asshole win, Ri,” Luke stumbled into the conversation, placing his gear down by hers. Luke’s been playing with Riley for the past two years at the University of Michigan, and while they lost against Quinnipiac at the Frozen Four semifinals and Luke immediately left for the Devils after, their bond never deterred. Coming to the Devils felt like coming home (if home consisted of an egotistical jerk and a sexist media team).
Shaking her head, Riley held her practice jersey in her hands. “Promise me, that’ll be the last thing I do.”

hey :) can you somthing for jamie drysdale ?!
Highschool Sweethearts|| Jamie Drysdale x reader
•pairing: Jamie Drysdale x reader
•summary: You marry your high school sweetheart Jamie<3
•warnings: Weddings, fluff, I think that's all lol. ALSO FOR FANFICTION PURPOSES: Jamie went to the same high school as reader, OK? OK ;) also, if I got anything about Jamie's life wrong, I sincerely apologize lol. I'm a fan of his, but I do not know all the details, so sorry. Okay that's all, enjoy loves<3
Today was the happiest day of your life. Today, you are getting married to your best friend, your high school sweetheart, your soulmate, defensemen for the Anaheim Ducks, Jamie Drysdale. You and Jamie started dating your Junior year. Jamie was always known as the shy, yet incredibly sweet, star hockey player of your school. You were well known and extremely liked around your school, but the two of you never really interacted with each other in the past. That is, until Junior year, when you were paired up as partners for your Chemistry lab.
The lab required you to do work in school and outside, meaning you and Jamie were going to have to meet up somewhere that wasn't on school property. During the in-school lab portion of the assignment, Jamie had shyly asked you if you'd like to come over to his house and work on the project. You said yes and the two of you were blushing messes as you exchanged numbers, and discussed details for the project you'd be doing together at Jamie's house.
While at Jamie's home, the two of you finished your project with ease, confident that you were going to receive an A. As you worked on the assignment, you and Jamie talked about anything and everything. The two of you didn't know much about the other, just the little things here and there that you would hear from your classmates. You learned that Jamie has been playing hockey at a competitive level since 2017 and that he hopes to play in the NHL someday. He seemed to be extremely passionate about the sport of hockey. The way he talked about his dreams and his love for the sport made your heart swell and your grin widen. You loved getting to know Jamie, and little did you know, Jamie loved getting to know you too.
You had been at Jamie's for almost five hours after finishing the chem project, so when it got to be around 10pm, you decided it would be best to head to your house. Before you stepped out of the Drysdale home, Jamie awkwardly asked you on a date after telling you how much fun he had with you. You of course said yes to the date, reciprocating those same feelings.
Since that night, you and Jamie have been inseparable.
The two of you have shared so many important moments during your time together. You were each others firsts for everything, and you mean everything. You shared your first kiss together, went to prom together, moved in together, quarantined during the pandemic together, and most importantly, you shared one of the most important moments of Jamie's life—him getting drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in 2020.
You can't imagine what your life would be like if you hadn't been paired up with Jamie for that Chemistry lab in high school...
So here you both are today, newly married and ready to move on to the next stage in your life together. Getting a house, getting a dog, but most importantly, having kids.
You always told Jamie you'd have cute babies someday.
You and Jamie were sitting at the head table with your bridesmaids and Jamies groomsmen, composing yourselves before your first dance. Our friends had just given speeches. A few of them brought you and Jamie to tears, but all of them (Trevor's especially), were the perfect mix of humor and genuine happiness for the two of you. After hugging all of your friends that gave speeches, the DJ announced that it was time for yours and Jamie's first dance.
Jamie turned to you and gently grabbed your hand, holding it in his. You smiled at him and squeezed his hand.
"May I have this dance, Mrs. Drysdale?" He asked sweetly, his eyes sparkling as he looked down at you. His beautiful wife. You smiled, "Yes you may, Mr. Drysdale."
Jamie grinned at you, placing his hands securely on your waist as you wrapped your arms around his neck. He pulled you close so your bodies touched and there was no empty space between the two of you. The music to You and Me by Lifehouse began playing as you and Jamie started to slowly sway back and forth to the song. The first song that you and Jamie danced to as a boyfriend and girlfriend, and now the first song that you Jamie danced to as husband and wife.
"Y/n," Jamie said softy, his tone full of love awe as he spoke, "I cant believe I get to call you my wife." He said, placing his forehead against yours.
You smiled softly, tears welling in your eyes as you lovingly squeezed his shoulder in response. You couldn't say anything because you thought if you tried to speak right now, no words would come out, only sobs. Happy sobs of course.
As the song finished, you and Jamie shared a passionate kiss, making the room full of your friends and family whistle and clap.
"Mr and Mrs. Drysdale everybody!" Trevor yelled from the head table. As soon as Jamie's best friend announced the two of you, cheering erupted throughout the room as Jamie warmly embraced you and captured your lips in another passionate kiss.
The two of you pulled away at the same time, grinning as you looked into each other eyes. Jamie picked you up and held you bridal style. You couldn't contain your laughter as Jamie carried you off the dance floor. He gently placed you back onto the ground and wrapped his arms around your waist.
"You," Jamie started with a smile, "Y/n, are the best thing that has ever happened to me." You felt tears well up in your eyes at his words. You smiled up at him, responding wholeheartedly, "I love you so much J."
"I love you more baby." He leaned down and placed a sweet kiss on your lips once again. It felt so good to kiss your husband.
As the night went on, You and Jamie shared many laughs, many kisses, and of course, many memories that you would cherish forever.
You were the luckiest woman in the world because after tonight, Jamie Drysdale was yours forever.
hey loves!!

Waivers: The Basics
Having noticed that many of my mutuals, as well as hockeyblr at large, are unsure of what exactly the NHL's waiver system means and how it works, I've endeavored to write up a little bit of a primer on waivers to make it easier to understand. Meet me under the cut to learn more!
What are waivers?
Put most simply, waivers are a process that occurs when a team says to a player, "We don't want you in the NHL anymore, we're sending you to the AHL". Because of the CBA's (Collective Bargaining Agreement) Article 13, before they can do this, they have to put the player on the waiver wire, which is essentially a 24-hour-long period where any other team that wants that player to play for them in the NHL can claim them. The purpose of the waiver wire is to ensure that teams don't unfairly stash NHL-caliber players in the AHL, thereby paying them lesser salaries (this is the most important part - AHL salaries are generally about a tenth of NHL salaries) and not allowing them to play NHL games. Players that may not be getting a fair shot on one team can move to another, where they can be used more effectively - for instance, Eeli Tolvanen was waived by Nashville, picked up by Seattle, and now plays a key role on Seattle's third line. In fact, he scored Seattle's first-ever goal in the playoffs!
What happens once a player is put on the waiver wire?
If another team claims the player, they are claimed on waivers and are transferred to the other team. Notably, the other team must have the appropriate cap and roster space necessary to claim the player. An example here is Kasperi Kapanen, who was placed on waivers by Pittsburgh and was claimed by St Louis. His cap hit of $3.2m may have been prohibitive for other teams who could have wanted to claim him.
If multiple teams try to claim the player, the player goes to the team that submitted a claim which is the worst in the standings - if it's before November 1st of a new season year, it goes to the team that finished worst in the standings the year before, but if it's after November 1st, it goes to the team that is currently worst in the standings. Take Lassi Thomson, who was placed on waivers by Ottawa and claimed by Anaheim. If, for example, Toronto also submitted a claim, they would not have been awarded Thomson, as Anaheim has the worse standing.
If no other team claims the player, they clear waivers. When they do so, they can be reassigned to the NHL team's affiliate AHL team. Notably, not everyone who clears waivers is immediately reassigned - a player who clears waivers can stay with the NHL team instead (for example, if another player just got injured). They can be sent down to the AHL at a later time - they do not have to go through the waivers process again if they have played less than 10 NHL games (cumulative) or been on the roster for less than 30 days (cumulative) from the last time they cleared waivers. This can be used to a savvy GM's advantage to avoid putting players on the waiver wire.
Why is everyone getting waived right now?
At the beginning of the preseason, every player with an NHL contract, whether it be one-way (NHL only) or two-way (NHL and AHL), is invited to that team's training camp. This places them on the NHL preseason roster for that team. As training camp goes on and players get cut, they then must pass through waivers to go to the AHL. Unless, of course, they're waiver exempt.
What is waiver exemption and why is it important?
So you might already have noticed an issue with the waiver system - it's terrible for younger players. If solely the waiver rules we've discussed above existed, every player being sent to the AHL would have to go through waivers. This would include prospects who are signed to an NHL ELC (entry-level contract) but didn't make the cut for the season. Obviously, this is bad for teams - imagine drafting players who you know will be good for you in 2 or 3 years and then losing them all to the waiver wire. This is why waiver exemption exists.
Waiver exemption, to keep it simple, is a protection that certain players have that means they do not have to go through the waivers process to be reassigned to the AHL. The specific details of waiver exemption are a little complicated - let's take a look at the table to make it make more sense.
This table is either/or and is defined by the age when their NHL ELC was signed. A skater who signed their ELC as an 18-year-old is waiver exempt for either 5 years or 160 games played (including playoff games) at the NHL level. A skater who signed at 21 is exempt for either 3 years or 80 NHL games. Goalies have different requirements than skaters because they generally take longer to develop and don't play as many games.
There is a fairly common misconception that all players on their ELCs are automatically waiver exempt. This is false. The second a player hits the amount of games played for their age, they are immediately no longer waiver exempt. Usually, this doesn't occur until after the ELC is over, as most ELC players deal with injuries and healthy scratches, as well as not generally being given the reins to play on the NHL roster for the entire season. One notable example that disproves the "ELC means waiver exempt" conception is Dawson Mercer from New Jersey. Mercer signed his ELC as a 19-year-old in December of 2020. He has played all 82 games in the past 2 seasons (2021-22 & 2022-23) plus 12 playoff games for a total of 176 NHL games played. Under the games requirements, he is now no longer exempt from waivers, despite having one whole year left on his ELC.
For the 25+ category, upon playing a single NHL game, the player is waiver exempt for that entire season and that entire season only. Andrei Kuzmenko from Vancouver is a good example of that - last season, he signed his one-year ELC with Vancouver as a 27-year-old and could have been sent to the AHL at any time without going through waivers. (He was not, needless to say.)
There is one very important exception to the table: if an 18- or 19-year-old player plays 11 or more games with an NHL team in a single season, their waiver exemption is automatically cropped. For that season, and the next two, the player is waiver exempt, but after that, they are no longer exempt. This extends to the next three if the player in question is a goalie and not a skater. (To make it easier to understand, it's as if they jumped into the 20-year-old category.) However, 18- and 19-year-old prospects generally only play 9 games maximum at the NHL level in order to allow for the entry-level slide, allowing the contract to "slide" forward a year, letting teams keep the player on the ELC for an extra year and thus save money.
Are there any other ways a player can play in the AHL without going through waivers or being waiver exempt?
Yes, actually! There are two main exceptions - they're for conditioning loans.
First, what is a conditioning loan? A conditioning loan is a short-term reassignment to the AHL. There are two types of conditioning loans: the standard conditioning loan and the LTIR conditioning loan.
A standard conditioning loan, specified under the CBA 13.8, occurs when a player agrees to head down to the AHL for a few games to "wipe off the dust" on their game, so to speak. They're often used by players who have ended up as perennial healthy scratches on their NHL teams, so that they're able to jump in if there's an injury or other issue. Standard conditioning loans can last up to 14 days. One example of a standard conditioning loan is Shane Wright, who was sent to the AHL by Seattle very early in the season for conditioning, partially to bypass the requirement that the NHL has with the major junior CHL that would have required him to go back to the CHL were he officially reassigned from Seattle. Another is Nathan Beaulieu, who was sent to the AHL by Anaheim in January for a four-game stint.
An LTIR conditioning loan, specified under the CBA 13.9, occurs when a player coming off of LTIR agrees to head down to the AHL for a few games to "wipe off the dust" on their game, so to speak. These loans can only last 6 days or 3 games, whichever comes later, and the idea is to be able to figure out whether a player is able to return to form or requires more time to heal properly. For example, Travis Dermott was sent to the AHL by Vancouver in December to evaluate whether he was back to form after a concussion sustained in the preseason. He played one game in the AHL, then drew back into Vancouver's lineup for eleven games before going back on IR for the rest of the season due to the concussion repercussions. Notably, a team can only use one LTIR conditioning loan for each time a player is on LTIR.
What is emergency recall and why does it make a player waiver exempt?
Emergency recall occurs when a player on a team's NHL lineup is injured and the team can no longer ice a full squad because of it. (As a reminder, each team must carry 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 2 goalies. Usually, teams keep an extra forward and defenseman around as a healthy scratch in case of injuries, but some teams are pressed against the cap and cannot carry extra players.) In this case, they can call an AHL player (or multiple, at times) up on an "emergency" basis to fill in during the time that the NHL player is out. Once the NHL player is healthy again, the AHL player can either be transferred to a regular recall or gets sent down to their AHL team again. One example here is Akira Schmid, who was bouncing back and forth between Utica and New Jersey on emergency recalls every few weeks because Mackenzie Blackwood, one of New Jersey's two goaltenders, was constantly getting hurt.
It makes sense, then, why emergency recall would grant a player temporary waiver exemption status - it would be awful to have to recall a player from the AHL, have them in the NHL for a little bit, and then have to send them through waivers and get claimed when your roster player is healthy. However, if an emergency recall player plays in at least 10 NHL games, he loses his waiver exempt status under emergency recall (other forms of waiver exemption still apply).
What are unconditional waivers?
Unconditional waivers are different from regular waivers in what they do. Passing through unconditional waivers does not send you to the AHL. Instead, they are used by teams that want to buy out or terminate players' contracts, completely giving up their rights to the players. Players placed on unconditional waivers are almost never claimed because of this - only two players have ever been claimed off unconditional waivers.
Okay, hold on - what's the difference between a buyout and a termination?
A termination occurs when a player's contract is terminated. The player severs all ties to a team and does not continue to be paid by the team. The team does not incur any cap penalties from termination. There are two main types of termination.
The first type of termination is mutually-agreed-upon termination. In the case of Filip Zadina, who was recently terminated by Detroit, he made it clear that he would refuse to report to the AHL after being sent down on regular waivers. The team and Zadina then proceeded to terminate the contract so that Zadina would be free to negotiate a contract with another NHL team instead of playing for Detroit's AHL team, and so that Detroit would not incur any cap penalties from buying out Zadina. Another example is Lukas Sedlak, whose contract was terminated by Philadelphia when he made it clear to the team that he wanted to return to Europe to play. Philadelphia put Sedlak on unconditional waivers, terminated the contract, and Sedlak soon returned to his native Czechia to play for Pardubice.
The other, rarer type of termination is for material breach. Material breach termination is exemplified by Alex Galchenyuk, whose contract was terminated by Arizona after they became aware of the intoxicated driving incident involving Galchenyuk. Essentially, material breach is used when players are acting illegally, either against the law of the United States/Canada, or against the terms of their contract. The reason these terminations are so rare is twofold: Not only are hockey players generally going to try to avoid breaking the law, when they do, the player's association is usually going to investigate and file appeals and the like to try to secure their players the highest possible settlement despite the termination (and set a precedent so other teams are not encouraged to terminate contracts for material breach).
On the other hand, a buyout occurs when a player is released by a team, but the player continues to be paid by the team as per their contract. The team incurs cap penalties from buyouts - 1/3 of the contract value if the player is younger than 26 at the time of the buy-out, 2/3 of the value if the player is 26 or order. This penalty is spread across double the years left on the contract.
An aside - this is also where the idea of a "buyout-proof" contract comes in. A buyout-proof contract contains most of the salary being paid in the form of signing bonuses, which are paid in full even if the contract is bought out. (These contracts are also considered "lockout-proof", as, again, the signing bonus must be paid even if there is a lockout and no hockey is being played.) As an example of this, take a look at Auston Matthews's extension:
If the Leafs try to buy this contract out, they'd have to pay Matthews the entirety of the signing bonuses as well as 2/3 of the base salary, making the cap savings incredibly marginal and just not worth it to buy out. Thus, it's buyout-proof.
Is that everything I need to know about waivers?
I think so! If you have any other questions, please drop me a line in my inbox or via DMs - I'll be happy to explain more to you! :D

just thinking about sergei’s first nhl goal. imagine, fresh out of the shower one day, a man you’ve never seen is talking to you. he’s american, but speaks a little russian. you leave your family and friends and the only life you’ve ever known behind. you’re just a kid.
and suddenly you’re scoring your first goal in front of a crowd that thought it was crazy to draft you. the assist comes from your captain — the one who drew you across an ocean because you wanted to be like him — and here he is again to hold you. you mirror him perfectly. you want to live up to the number on your back.
your english isn’t the best yet, but you don’t need words for this.

I forgot to post about this back when it came out. But this was an interview with two prominent figures from the management side of the PWHL from a few days back. I was expecting it to be a bit dry, but they actually address quite a few prominent questions.
I was originally going to skip doing this one as it's somewhat long, but I've been seeing a number of things they talked about coming up in discussions here, so I thought y'all might be interested to hear what they have to say.
I'll transcribe what I personally found to be the most interesting elements that came up, but know I'll be cutting down some of the remarks and only doing some of the questions, so definitely watch the video for the full story.
Since this is already going to be a massive post I'll spare you my musings on the answers.
Transcriptions of some of the questions under the break.
At the table are Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Jayna Hefford & Advisory Board Member Stan Kasten.
And I believe this was after Game 2 of the finals and before the start of Game 3.
For context on who these two are in a bigger picture, what little I know is:
Jayna Hefford is a HIGHLY successful and influential former Canadian hockey player who's been working in the field of women's hockey ever since she retired from playing. If I tried to sum up her career we'd be here all day, so let's just say she's in the Hockey Hall of Fame for a reason.
Stan Kasten comes from a background of running/managing large sports teams, though mostly baseball. He is even the current president of the Los Angeles Dodgers and also one of the co-owners. He seems to have had a brief foray into hockey as the president of the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers for a few years. The Thrashers no longer exist and I think they moved and became what are now the Jets? (I dunno, I shouldn't be your source for NHL history, that's for sure.)
--------------- INTRODUCTIONS ---------------
STAN KASTEN: I can’t describe the pleasure this is for me to be here [at the Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota]. The last time I was here I told you that I thought that day, the 13,000*, really convinced us that we were going to make this work.
[* the first home game for Minnesota had an attendance of 13,316.]
But even then I couldn’t have imagined how the year would play out. How we would set attendance records, sponsorship records, and viewing records. So our media strategy was a success. But of course the thing that made it work, really, was what I said opening day: we got the hockey right.
And that’s because of Jayna [Hefford] and her staff. You know, we didn’t know our playoffs ‘til after the last game on the last day. Who could have imagined that we’d put together a system that would've worked out that perfectly. You see how close and competitive the playoffs have been. And as exciting as this is for all of us, we can’t wait to get started on year 2, because we know with all Summer to prepare, it’s gonna be even better.
JAYNA HEFFORD: When we kicked off this league we had a few goals and—at least on the hockey side—one of them was to create parity across the league. And through the draft and the player dispersal, the player signings that we put in place, we were able to do that.
And to Stan’s point, I don’t think we could have wrote the script any better the way it played out and came down to the last game of the regular season to decide who was in the playoffs. We certainly achieved that.
Secondly, innovation and creativity was a priority for us. We wanted to find ways to improve the game. To make it more engaging for fans, to make it fun. We didn’t want to change hockey in the traditionalism of hockey, but we wanted to do things a little bit differently.
So implementing the Jailbreak rule, implementing the pick your own opponent, the Gold Plan*. All of those things are new. But I think right now, and of course we’re going to debrief post-season, but right now the response from all of those things has been overwhelmingly positive. So we will continue to try to be creative and think outside the box and present the game in new ways to people.
[* It didn’t come into play this season, so in case anyone isn’t familiar: The Gold Plan is the system by which after a team is out of contention for the playoffs during the regular season, any wins they get would be factored into where they’d be placed in the draft order for next season. It was designed to be an incentive for teams out of the running to still play their hardest and strive for wins.]
...
So excited to be here now for the next two or three games. And really it’s been a remarkable, amazing journey this last number of years, but really this last 8 or 9 months. And as Stan said, I don’t think I could have envisioned this playing out the way it did. The excitement around this, and the response from our fans, and response from media. So we’re just thrilled with where it’s at and I know this is gonna wrap up in a really great way in the next number of days.
...
--------------- LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT ARE THE CHANGES/CHALLENGES FOR NEXT YEAR? ---------------
STAN: We didn’t have our business staff in place until about 60 days before the season started. So we have a lot we can still do.
The most obvious one was merchandise. Having, you know, the amount of inventory that we needed was a challenge for us. Getting an online business started, in two countries, that was a challenge. So all these two country problems are different than other leagues.
By the end of the season we did really well on merchandise. But we have more coming and more designs and greater inventory. The one good thing is that we sold everything that we could make. I mean, it was just flying off the shelves when we could get it to arenas. And the online business has been strong also. Those things are challenging when they’re start-ups, and as I said, they’re start-ups in two countries, so we know how to do it now. It’s gonna get a lot better going forward.
JAYNA: And I think what everybody is waiting for is names and logos. So that’s one big thing that’s coming. So I think that’ll be really exciting to be able to build those brands and make those brands significant in the markets and communities we’re in.
STAN: It’s interesting how the name thing played out. We did not start out to do that, but because the lead time required in these things, we just thought it was better to just skip that for now and just go with: PWHL and the location.
And that has had an amazing unintended consequence of anytime anyone has talked about any of our teams all year, you had to say “PWHL.” So our league has gotten more exposure in the first year of its existence than any league in history ‘cause they kept repeating our name.
Again, we didn’t plan it that way; it just worked out that way. And it was about mid-season that I started hearing from fans and players, “You know, we kinda like the name the way it is.”
We’re gonna have team names. And I invite people to adopt those names too. But you can feel free to continue to call it what you’ve always called it. And we will be selling merchandise with both of those names. So these names aren’t going away because they have become popular. But for those of you who like team names, we’ll be addressing that as well.
...
JAYNA: ...Of course we feel like we have incredible talent on the ice every night now, but putting the best on the ice is about putting the best on the ice. And we know there’s a number of incoming players. So it will get more challenging. Good players will have a hard time making this league. But when you think about the product we’re gonna put on the ice? It’s gonna continue to get significantly better every single year as we welcome in newer and younger players. Then at some point we’ll look to add teams, when that depth of talent is at the right place in our minds. But right now it’s just exciting to look at all the new and fresh talent that’s going to step in.
--------------- WHAT CAN YOU DO TO IMPROVE DIVERSITY AND ATTRACT MORE BLACK FANS TO THE GAMES? ---------------
JAYNA: I think the first thing is representation. And we have some incredible athletes in our league that continue to be great role models, be active in their communities. And when you think of Sophie Jaques and Sarah Nurse and players that continue to give back and become something that young girls can look up to? I think all of our players do that for a lot of different communities of people.
And I think the one thing that’s really special about our league is- I feel it every game I’m at, it doesn’t matter what market we’re in, is that there’s a sense of inclusivity in our buildings. People are here and they’re excited and they’re happy and they feel welcome, regardless of who they are. And they feel free to be themselves. I’ve talked to many, many people that have never felt this way in a hockey rink. So we’ll continue to do that on the culture side.
I think what we want to do is continue to grow the game for young girls and I don’t think there’s any limits on who those young girls are. We want people to fall in love with the game. And I think we approach our business side and staffing side the same way. We want to bring people in who love the game and we want to bring people in that represent different communities.
--------------- WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR NEW YORK TO POSSIBLY PLAY IN ONE VENUE INSTEAD OF THE THREE OR FOUR THEY USED THIS SEASON? ---------------
STAN: When the season is over we’re gonna review everything. Every city, every venue that we’re in, and we’re going to try to improve. We’re aware of the New York situation. It wasn’t ideal this year. But we’ll see what ways we can improve the situation. We’re not ready to say here today which way we’re going to go or what we’re going to do. But I can tell you that certainly one of the things we’re going to spend a lot of time looking at.
REPORTER: What do you guys think is the ideal venue situation?
STAN: The ideal venue situation is to play in the biggest NHL venue in every city. And merit playing there. We’re not always there yet in every market. But in big markets, as you might know, the big venues are there because there are a lot of events and a lot of teams in those cities. That gets into availabilities. We don’t want to be in a big venue, but have to play on a Tuesday morning, right? We wanna play on weekend nights or nights in general.
So it’s a complicated matrix of considerations that goes into where we choose to play, when we choose to play, what’s good for the team, what’s good for the visiting team, how we travel. It’s complicated.
It’s complicated with 6, it’ll be more complicated the bigger we grow and the more games we have. Those will be good problems, but we don’t ignore it. We’re thinking about all of it. And you saw in this year when we found an opportunity that we thought would work for our fans in cities where we could go to big venues, we did it. I would call them experiments and in general I’d say those experiments were all wildly successful.
--------------- WHEN CAN WE EXPECT NAMES AND LOGOS? ---------------
STAN: Sometime this Summer. I don’t have an exact time, but you should be counting the days.
--------------- HOW DID THE GATE RECEIPT REVENUE COMPARE TO WHAT YOU EXPECTED? ---------------
STAN: I will tell you that, yes, it exceeded what we thought we were going to- it exceeded our early projections. But that’s partially because we made the strategy decision to also greatly exceed our expected expenses.
Let me give you an example. You know how women’s hockey games have been broadcast in the past, right? Single camera from upstairs. It isn’t what we chose to do. We made the conscious choice to spend a lot of money to make it a major league professional broadcast. And I think all of you who watched our games would agree. That’s what we delivered. It was expensive. But we think it’s gonna pay off for us in the long run.
Additionally we didn’t hire three people and slowly build each franchise. We went right to 120 people by opening day and now we’re over 200 people. So that was a lot of expense that we didn’t expect right away, but we said, “you know what? We’re all in. So let’s do year 4 expenses in year 1.”
So yeah, and that resulted in a lot more revenue. And that’s why we think our decision to invest in the league, which is what I call expenses, was the right one. We’re on the right track. The investments we made are paying off.
--------------- WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT NEXT SEASON’S SCHEDULE, NUMBER OF GAMES, AND POSSIBLE NEUTRAL-SITE GAMES? ---------------
JAYNA: Well, in terms of number of games the league will go up to 30. And that’s in our CBA that 24 regular games in the inaugural season will move to a minimum of 30 next year. In terms of neutral site games, we do expect that there will be more of those next season. I don’t have a timeline for our schedule to be done yet, but we do expect more games, more neutral-site games next season.
--------------- WHAT WAS THE CONSENSUS ON THE OFFICIATING THIS SEASON IN THE LEAGUE? ---------------
JAYNA: I don’t know if you’ll ever get a collection of people that all agree on officiating in any sport, in any league. So we’re actually really happy with where we’re at.
We set out initially to find the best officials we could find. We worked closely with the NHL, the AHL, Hockey Canada, USA Hockey, to select the top officials. We obviously also adjusted the standard of play to this league. It’s not full body checking, but there is an increased level of physicality in the game. So I think we spent the early months of the season really trying to figure out where that line is and get people comfortable with it.
Now where we’re at I think players have figured it out to some extent. Of course not everyone’s going to agree on that. But the way I see the players playing the game now, and their awareness of positions they’re in, and to be ready for that physicality has changed. So, are we right there? We’re probably not right there yet. But we’re really happy with where we’re at, we think the officials have done an incredible job in the league this season.
--------------- ARE THERE PLANS FOR DRAFTED PLAYERS WHO MIGHT NOT MAKE THE PWHL ROSTERS? ---------------
JAYNA: I think trying to figure out what the right solution for that is in the short term is at the top of our list of things to do. You know, building one league in 9 months, but to build a whole ecosystem for hockey? It’s just not something that we can do right now. But we are thinking creatively around places that players could play if they don’t end up on our 23 or 26 player rosters next season. So it’s a bit of a work in progress. But in speaking to number of stakeholders there’s many many people that want to figure out a solution to this so that we can keep more women in playing the game at the highest level.
--------------- DO YOU LOOK AT THE LEAGUE AS A “WOMEN’S SPORTS” SUCCESS STORY OR HAS IT MOVED BEYOND THAT? ---------------
JAYNA: I think that we are very different from most men’s leagues. I think we’re very different than many women’s leagues. I’d like to see us stand on our own as a sports league. But in saying that I also believe that this time for women’s sports and the success of one feels like it’s a success for all. We’re all big fans and collaborate with folks in the WNBA and the NWSL, and it feels like we’re all working together to raise women’s sports. So I don’t know if that’s an appropriate answer, but I feel it’s a little of both.
--------------- HOW DO THE INVESTORS FEEL ABOUT THIS FIRST SEASON? ---------------
STAN: I have one investor, he is ecstatic.
...
--------------- WHAT IS THE POTENTIAL FOR DOING A BEST OF 7 GAMES SERIES IN THE FUTURE? ---------------
JAYNA: This is a little bit like getting asked about expansion 3 months in. Great question. Would I love to see a best of 7 series? We’re sitting here 1-1, you know of course I would. But I think we’re really excited about the format we have now. This is new for women’s hockey. Even the best players in the world who’ve won multiple Olympic gold medals have not played in a best of 5 series. I think we’re seeing that it’s challenging. There’s a lot of travel, there’s fatigue, the volume that they’re experiencing is huge
So I think we’re really good where we’re at right now. Somewhere along the line I could see us maybe expanding, but again, year 1? The two best of 5 series have been a really great format for us.
STAN: And that comes from someone who’s won 4 Olympic gold medals.
JAYNA: [laughing] I’ve never played in a best of 5 series either.
STAN: Exactly.

please disregard if this isn't for you, and my apologies if that's the case, but if not. hello! i would like your opinion on what would be in the leafs' (or other hockey players if you wish!) scent profiles in the omegaverse
first couple lines of that scared me WHEW ok ok. im not like. an a/b/o Guy as in. like. it's not entirely my thing but ive been known to dabble occasionally if the going's good. that to say i'm taking "scent profile" to mean like. a) what "designation" they have (a/b/o) and b) what like their Smells are. if that's not the commonly accepted meaning of the terms that's ok but it Is the question i am answering
am34: to me in my beautiful world am34 is an omega BUT not in a standard way... he's transgender but re: a/b/o designation not gender. like a/b/o is essentially just a second sex class (there exist in the a/b/o universe 6 "sexes" (not accounting for intersex people in the normal way/intersex people in the a/b/o way): alpha male, alpha female, beta male, beta female, omega male, omega female) and auston is transitioning/has transitioned from alpha to omega. in my mind this works basically the exact same way transitioning does irl, but with different hormones, because obviously a/b/o hormones are diff from m/f hormones!) anyway he would smell similar but different pre- and post-transition: sharp, hot and chemical, like jet fuel and citric acid. eating grapefruit at the airport. it gets sweeter as his transition goes on. lemon slushy by a construction site. they're putting tar on the sidewalk.
mitch marner: mitchy's alpha thru and thru... the leafs uncles do Nawt enjoy this because why isn't he using his ALPHA VIBES to intimidate the other goaltender into sucking... ah well. anywhay... mitch smells animal. sticking your face into a cat. wet dog. wool. locker room, but how you imagine the locker room in gay porn fantasy smells. a little bit of light petrichor when things are getting Really weird.
william nilliam: ALSO alpha. when the leafs drafted am34 ppl were suddenly Weird about this realization there were 3 alphas on the team... were they gonna fight? for a while there was really only the one alpha (phil kessel) and now all of a sudden the big three prospects were all alphas. there was concern! they should trade the little swedish brat! and then auston transitioned and the core was balanced (2 alphas, 2 omegas, and morgan <3) and everyone was like. ok. okay. mitchy and willy (and auston pretransition) were all fun and cool with it they WERE. it's harder now that am34's an omega and they have to regularly resist challenging each other over him but it's all fun and good! they're friends! anyways william nilliam smells like open sky. the wind off the water. wild grasses and night air. ozone.
john tavares: jt has been bonded to his alpha wife since his isles days and understandably as a result he smells Super bonded, but also like leather and rubber and polyester. blue jeans. ironic for mr kombucha man but what can you do
matthew knies: OMEGA !!! two arizona omegas wrow! sidenote for the readers in this a/b/o world a's and o's aren't like. A huge section of the population but they also don't entirely tend to get filtered out of or into the nhl... alphas exist in the nhl at similar or higher rates to the genpop, and omegas at similar or slightly lower rates. if alphas and omegas are each 10-15% of the population (combined 20-30%) that means that there's usually ~4-6 alphas + omegas combined on any given nhl team, give or take a few because percentages don't usually work that way. leafs have 5 alphas (mitch, willy, max, benny, dewar) and 3 omegas (am34, jt, kniesy). kniesy is one of those handful of people who is randomly like super educated about a/b/o biology etc etc. like dude paid attention in sex ed class??? i guess??? he smells a little bit like cheap tequila and a Lot bit like breakfast food, scrambled eggs and that very specific diner toast smell and those maple breakfast sausages. don't forget your orange juice!!
max domi: max is an alpha, like his father. and he smells alpha like his father, salted caramel and bitter coffee and sour apple.
connor dewar: pine tar and unscented soap and smoke and a bloody steak. a lot of people don't always clock him as alpha because he doesn't have the often like. strong or dominant scents of a typical alpha, but he's just a Nervous Guy. get the right omega around him and you WILL be able to tell he's an alpha lol
simon benoit: also coffee like max, but much less of a cheap cup made by someone trying to stay awake and much more of a seven-dollar latte made by someone with a nose ring. a bowl of ramen noodles with the highest spice level they'd let you pick. spring onion. farmer's market in a big city with food you've never seen before.
#asks#trying to evoke imagery here... trying to create a world.#also if this doesn't align with your personal headcanons... lets indulge in a little fiction here my friend. hashtag do what you will#thank u anon!

rutger mcgroarty with fluff prompt 10 :)
Draft day | RM2
You’re boyfriend was over the moon with how excited he’d been with waiting for the draft
Growing up you were friends with Rutger until the 6th grade
You both were in Mr.Paulson’s math class for 1st period
You two were seated next to each other for the rest of the year
Truth be told you had, had a crush on Rutger but wouldn’t tell her
Sitting next to him was the perfect opportunity to make small talk about everything
By the end of the year the two of you were dating and stayed like that up until today
You went to every home game since he was 12
You couldn’t imagine life without the brunette boy
You sat next to the boy holding his hand tight as he waited silently for his name to be called
Finally it happened
“The Winnipeg jets are proud to select from the U.S. national development team Rutger McGroarty!”
Rutger beamed up from his seat hugging you before his own family
You mumble “I’m so proud of you” into the crook of the boys neck
He strutted down to the stage beaming with confidence
You proud of him but he was more proud of himself
After about an hour his family and you were finally able to see him
He bouncing up and down pointing to all the things in the room he thought were cool
You looked up at him and laughed
Later that night you sat at a table eating dinner, Rutger was attached to your hip for the rest of the night
He kept pressing kisses to the top of your head and your cheek
Before the night ended he popped the question
He got on one knee and said “are you ready to be a nhl girlfriend?”
You just patted his head and laughed at his nonsense
You knew from then on that you two were gonna make it for a while

NicoJack fic
also on ao3 :)
Life is more than just hockey, Jack would hear his mother say to him many times when he was a boy.
When he wanted to skip a friend’s birthday party for practice, when his grades were slipping in middle school, when he didn’t even want to try soccer or football or baseball because he already loved hockey before he even knew what those other sports were. She used to sit him down and tell him, eyes all serious that he didn’t have to play because she used to, because dad used to, because Quinn does. She used to cup his cheek and tell him that there was a whole wide world outside of a hockey rink. That he could dream of other things too.
And Jack had smiled and nodded, but he’d wondered too. What else there could be. Why he would dream of anything other than the NHL, than playing for his country like she did, than scoring Stanley Cup winning goals and collecting medals and pucks and having his name on the back of a jersey that people paid money for, and all the other things he whispered in her ear when she asked what he was thinking about while driving him to the rink.
He’d asked Quinn once, the night before Quinn left Toronto for Michigan, if he ever dreamed of anything other than hockey.
“I guess getting married one day?” Quinn had said after a pause, looking at Jack like he was slightly embarrassed about it. He’d been fifteen and if thirteen year old boys find that shit lame and embarrassing guys Quinn’s age certainly did. But it’d just been them. Just Quinn and Jack and Luke. And Quinn had shrugged and he’d said, face still a little red, “I want to have a wife and kids and stuff. When I’m older, obviously.”
“Yeah, mom would kill you, dude, if you knocked a chick up now,” Jack had said, allowing Quinn to punch him in the arm with a grin on his face.
He hadn’t quite understood though.
Girls were great. They had soft lips and shiny hair and it felt good kissing them, but Jack hadn’t quite understood the appeal of a wife. Of a girl that’d always be around. Live in your house and everything. Girls never seemed to want to talk about hockey as much as Jack which had been weird because girls definitely like hockey too. Jack’s mom knows more than any guy he’s ever met about the game, but the girls who like to kiss Jack didn’t.
Life is more than just hockey, Jack, the fourth girl he ever had sex with had told him without any of the warmth in her voice that Jack’s mom had always had for him when saying this.
She’d been pissed, hair still a mess, slamming the car door behind her. Jack had run after her, fumbling to zip up his jeans at the same time, looking back he doesn’t know why he bothered. Why he didn’t just let her go. She’d been talking about colleges. About how they should go to Stanford together, or maybe UCLA, about PennState and other places he doesn’t remember anymore.
“I’m not going to college,” he’d told her with a frown and she’d scrunched up her nose and said that he still had time to get his grade up.
She hadn’t wanted to listen about his dream of getting drafted, of making it to the NHL right after. Of playing in one of 30 cities in North America. She had been angry instead, upset because how could that be his dream, when she was imagining a future for them where hockey was nothing more than a backdrop.
“Hockey is my life,” he’d told her and he had known it wasn’t what she wanted to hear but the depth of heartbreak of her face had still been a surprise.
He’d wondered then, standing there in the drizzling November rain, if he’d ever find anyone who’d understand. That maybe there was more to life than hockey for other people but not for Jack, that he didn’t want there to be. Everything he loves is intertwined with hockey. His family, his brothers, his friends. He doesn’t know what else he could need, what else he could want.
Life is more than just hockey, Jack hears his mother say in the back of his mind when he sits on a plane to Switzerland years later, his knee pressed against Nico’s.
Nico who came into Jack’s life as part of hockey. Who’d been there on the ice in New Jersey the first time Jack stepped onto it, welcoming Jack to the team with an honest smile and firm handshake. Who’d listened to Jack talk for an hour straight that first day even though he probably didn’t expect a waterfall of words when asking Jack about his favorite goal in hockey history. Who’d blushed sweetly when Jack had teased him, almost a year later, the two of them naked, tangled in bedsheets, for asking such an awkward, weird question.
“Did you get that from hockey flirting 101,” he’d asked before sticking out his tongue and Nico had rolled his eyes but asked all earnestly, what Jack’s favorite goal of himself was. And again, when Jack told him in way too much detail, he’d listened.
If Jack asked him now, he’d probably still remember the answer.
If Jack asked him now, he’d probably look at him with that look of nervous excitement in his eyes that makes Jack want to kiss him and tell him that everything would be fine. That they’d make it in time, that there was nothing to worry about. That people have babies all the time and that Nina has got this. That she has Katja and Rino and Luca there. That she knows Nico is on his way.
“You’re gonna be an uncle,” he says quietly, giving Nico a soft smile, just as the seatbelt sign turns on again above their heads.
The last text from Luca that Nico received ten minutes ago just told them that Nina was still in labour. Which Nico had gone back and forth over being good or bad. Good because it meant they might make it in time to be there for immediately after, but bad because well. Nico understandably kind of hates the idea of his sister being in pain.
“I’m gonna drop the baby,” Nico says, and it’s so unlike himself, this fear, this anxiousness, this nervous energy that makes him rub his hands on his thighs, that Nico can’t not steal a glance around before cupping his cheek with his hand.
“No, you won’t,” he tells him, calm and certain like Nico has been for him countless of times before.
Nico nods.
And when Nina, hair still sweaty, an exhausted, happy smile on her face, puts her bundled up, red faced little boy into Nico’s arms, he doesn’t drop him.
He looks at the baby, awe in his eyes and holds him so gently it melts Jack’s heart in a way he doesn’t think anything else ever did. In that moment, looking at Nico look at this baby that isn’t even three hours old yet, Jack doesn’t think he remembers a single goal he’s ever scored.
Nico glances up, an impossibly gentle smile on his lips, and he looks at Jack when he speaks.
“Can Jack hold him?” he asks, and behind him Nina laughs, soft and tired and happy.
“Of course,” she says, and before anything else can register in Jack’s brain, he’s holding the baby.
Breath stuck in his chest, heart beating to his throat, he feels a rush of warmth go through him that he has no name for until Nico reaches out and the baby, eyes closed, wraps its little hand around Nico’s finger.
He wants this, Jack realizes. A baby. A family. With Nico. He wants this moment and have it be theirs only. He wants more than just winning the cup with Nico, more than building a dynasty with him, more than sharing ice beneath their skates for the rest of their careers. He wants more than just hockey with Nico.
Life is more than hockey, he whispers again in his own head and meeting Nico's eyes, he thinks that Nico understands. That he's feeling the same.
Their life is more than hockey.

word count: 5,152
warnings: none
genres: strangers to lovers to ex’s, a bit sad, somewhat happy ending
A/N: To start, I know that Nolan’s not as popular anymore and his future in the NHL is looking a bit bleak but despite that, this story exists. This story is based off of the songs, the Hayley Williams cover of Nineteen by Tegan and Sara, (which is where the title comes from), You All Over Me by Taylor Swift feat Maren Morris and Last Kiss by Taylor Swift (I highly recommend listening to those songs before reading. I’m taking vibes, elements and references from them and putting them in the story and listening will also help with understanding the plot). I’ve wanted to write a fic based off of those songs for a while and my vision for the story works best with Nolan. It’s set in a timeline format by the hockey season. It’s written with a female reader in mind because I’m a female of color but the reader doesn’t specifically have to be a POC or a woman and there’s no dialogue. As always, I’m open to any and all feedback, comments or questions; just put them in my inbox or dm me. Thank you so much in advance for reading, I appreciate it😌
(P.S. I have other stories (linked here) that I have written for other players as well if you want to check it out)
“You were mine, always but now you’re gone. Look what we’ve become, just another sad song of a love gone wrong.” -Pictures by Judah and the Lion feat. Kacey Musgraves
2017-18
Nolan could feel you in his limbs before he ever met you and he could feel you in his life before he ever thought to. How can you feel someone that you don’t even know yet? On the day you met, Nolan felt an unexplained tingle in his body. He was dreading having to go to the DMV but he misplaced his license so on a rare weekday off, he went to get a replacement license. Nolan really needed his license; he legally couldn’t drive without it. He could only imagine the chaos that would ensue if the recently 2nd overall NHL draft pick was pulled over and caught driving without his license so he couldn’t put off getting it done. To top it off, Nolan felt this weird tingling sensation in his body so he mentally made a note to talk about it with the team doctor. Travis (TK) kindly dropped Nolan off at the DMV and continued with his other plans for the off day. For you, you had some time after your classes to pop into the DMV to renew your license, which was going to expire soon because your birthday was coming up.
That tingling feeling that Nolan was experiencing went away when you first interacted with each other in that crowded waiting room back in 2018, in the middle of his first season with the Flyers. The softness in your voice asking if the seat next to him was taken directly contrasted with the deepness of Nolan’s voice. It was going to be a long wait so to pass the time, you and Nolan started talking to each other. Nolan usually was against unnecessary small talk and preferred to keep to himself but chatting with you felt different. Throughout these conversations, you learned little details about each other; details that would be held onto throughout the course of your relationship. You learned that Nolan was actually a funny guy behind his intimidating demeanor and he learned that you deeply valued family. The connection that you had made in the hours of waiting felt special to Nolan. You didn’t even know each other for that long and that well but it was almost like you could feel each other in your hearts as you talked. Since Nolan had arrived before you did, his number was called sooner so he left first. Before leaving, he quickly wrote his number down on the back of the waiting room ticket.
Later that same day, you sent Nolan a text to check in on him and that started a long text chain between the two of you. In the beginning of your friendship, Nolan definitely had his walls up but as you got to know more about each other, the walls came down. Nolan enjoyed talking to you because you made him feel like a regular person, not some superstar; the pressure of being a high NHL draft pick disappeared in the chats that you shared. Over time, he became more comfortable and trusting with you, even inviting you to his games and team events and telling his teammates about you. You began falling for each other and your relationship grew from texting buddies to friends to lovers. Your relationship with Nolan was quiet but it worked well that way. There was a slow introduction to the most important people in your lives; you’ll never forget how your father complimented Nolan’s handshake and how that handshake indicated to him that Nolan was a strong man and your mother admired how Nolan treated you so well. Nolan didn’t want outsiders to judge and ridicule his relationship with you so there were no direct social media posts of your presence in each other’s lives –only small snippets of his face or hands in your Instagram story posts, listening to songs that you liked or that reminded him of you on his story posts and location tags of being at the same place– but the right people knew you were together. There were also fun things, like surprise flowers and other gifts at your door, inside jokes, and secret road trips down to the beaches on the Jersey Shore. You were down so bad for Nolan and he could make you melt like ice cream on a hot June day with just one look. Nolan was down badly too; he tried to be all cool and push it aside but as soon as you walked into the room or opened his car door, the heat in his cheeks would rise and it was game over. The first year of your relationship together was so amazing until things changed.
————————————————————
2018-19
Due to your summer internship commitments, you only got to spend 2 weeks in Winnipeg with Nolan before school started back up at the end of August. Nolan was anxious about you coming to his safe space of his hometown; it rained the day you arrived and the smell of rain brought comfort to him. As both a test and a joke, you ran towards your boyfriend in the airport to see how he would respond. Nolan saw you running at him and his first reaction was to open his arms to catch you; having you in his arms meant everything to him.
Nolan isn’t a man of many words but being with you made him want to sing. On your first night in Winnipeg, Nolan took you to a bonfire party to meet some of his friends. At the party, you mixed and mingled with the people who Nolan trusted the most. Nolan even pulled you in for a dance, which surprised you because he knew that you weren’t much of a dancer and also that he would bust out a move in front of so many people. After the party flamed out, you and Nolan drove back to his house and by the time you arrived, it was almost 2 am. Before going inside, Nolan had looked at you with those blue eyes of his that you adored and you could sense that he was nervous; something was up. Nolan took a deep breath and told you that he loved you for the first time in that same deep voice that captivated you when you first met and you repeated it back to him. You always knew in your heart that you loved Nolan but hearing him say it meant so much more.
Summer Nolan was much more laid back and chill than Hockey Season Nolan. During your time in his hometown, Nolan showed you around the place that shaped him into who he was and let you meet the people who impacted him along the way; he even drove you all the way out to Brandon to see his old stomping grounds before he was drafted. It wouldn’t be summer unless he also took you fishing, hunting, and out for a day on the golf course as well. You got along well with Nolan’s family and meshed great with them. By the time you left to return to Philly, Nolan was already looking forward to bringing you back home to Winnipeg for many summers to come.
After you had left, Nolan was doing some summer training and unexpectedly started experiencing some migraines; he had experienced injuries and concussions before but this wasn’t like that. Due to Nolan’s career choice as a hockey player, he had access to the best doctors and specialists in the country so that helped relieve some of the stress that came with having a chronic illness. His migraines came with good and bad days and one of those bad days came as a test when you were together.
The first time you had ever spent the night at Nolan’s place in Philadelphia, he had a random migraine. Thankfully, it wasn’t so bad that he would miss time from playing; Nolan was still trying to navigate his newfound diagnosis but he handled it the best way that he could. At the time, he was living with Kevin (you were taking things slow and hadn’t talked about moving in together yet) so you weren’t originally planning on staying overnight but Nolan really needed you there. You weren’t trained like a doctor or nurse to take care of him but you did everything in your power to make him feel as comfortable as possible and to help to alleviate his pain. The only thing that helped Nolan was laying down in the dark with no light and you cautiously lay beside him in the darkness of his bedroom. Whenever you were sick as a child, one of your parents would come into your room to make sure you were breathing okay on your own and you did the same for Nolan. You watched him as he slept and could feel him breathe. That evening was a bit rough but Nolan was so grateful that you sacrificed your time to be with him during an unexpected, difficult situation. Like anything else in life, there would always be ups and downs but you would always be there to take care of him, no matter what.
————————————————————
2019-20 and 2020-21
Nolan continued to miss time away from the team and he did his best to try to get healthy enough to return to play but it took more time than expected. Patience would end up becoming an important, key virtue throughout your relationship. During this time, you graduated early from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s in Public Health and Nolan was super proud of you, beaming with joy from watching his lover achieve such a great accomplishment. You decided to take a year off from school before going back to get your Master’s degree in Epidemiology but then in early 2020, a pandemic hit; suddenly, you were hunkering down in Canada with Nolan and his family, your hope-to-someday-be in-laws. The world that you all knew was changing dramatically. The NHL season paused for a bit and started back up in a bubble-style tournament but due to his extended absence and health concerns, the Flyers and Nolan’s doctors felt like it was best for him to continue his recovery instead of having him come down to play in Toronto and Edmonton. You could sense the hurt from Nolan having to watch his team play in the playoffs without him and you felt that same pain, both sharing the hope for things to get better.
After the Flyers season concluded in late 2020, Nolan’s health had stabilized by then and he felt confident about returning to play so the Flyers gave him a contract for the shortened 2020-21 season. That condensed season was a bit brutal on Nolan since he hadn’t played professionally in over a year and the team wasn’t in the best condition at the time but he tried his best to persevere through it. He had a minor setback when Phillippe Myers accidentally hit him with a puck mid-game but thankfully, Nolan only missed 2 games and finished out the season without another injury. You saw a light in Nolan’s eyes when he played; a light that both shined and dimmed as time would go on.
The Flyers missed the 2021 playoffs and Nolan was so appreciative for the time off to recover but he also felt fearful for what was to come for the future. Nolan wanted to escape the criticism and pressure from being in Philly so during the 2021 off-season, he talked to you about his plans for leaving. He thought your input was super important and you were supportive of whatever he chose to do and were open to moving wherever he ended up.
The trade to Vegas was a bit surprising because there was no solid guarantee of where he was going to play but you were both grateful for the chance that the team took on Nolan and to open to this new chapter. It wasn’t easy leaving everything you knew behind in Philly but there was something exciting waiting for the both of you in the desert. You originally wanted to finish grad school in Philly but took a pause on your studies to move with Nolan to Vegas; this was also going to be the first time you had lived together. Living in Vegas had its expected highs and lows but you both made the best of the new city. You still kept in contact with some of the Flyers WAGs and made new friends with Golden Knights ladies, discovered new things to love about each other and the new place you lived. Yes, there still were some setbacks with Nolan’s health and his play needed some adjusting but it was okay because he was glad to be back on the ice and starting over somewhere new. Things were looking fine for both of you until February 16, 2022.
————————————————————
2021-22
You had a rare weekday off so you trekked down to T-Mobile Arena to go watch Nolan play. That game happened to be against the Colorado Avalanche; conference rivalry games always had some sort of chaos and drama but this time, that drama and chaos hit too close to home. As you sat in the stands, chatting away with the other WAGs, something devastating happened. Early in the first period, Nolan got hit. The hit was brutal to watch and you angrily cursed Nathan MacKinnon’s name for what he did to your man. You had always known that hockey was aggressive and physical but this hit ignited both a rage and sadness within you. During the game, you left to meet with the team doctor to discuss Nolan’s prognosis; it was a head injury so you knew what was coming ahead and you had to drive him home. You always liked when Nolan let you drive his car but this time it was different. The car ride back home was very quiet, the only noise was the sound of the other cars around you and the clicks of the turn signal. Every time you saw Nolan hurting, it made your heart break a little. You loved him so much that seeing him in pain made you feel pain and you wished that you could just erase the pain that Nolan dealt with and make him 100% better.
Nolan eventually did return to play before getting hurt again and playing his last game on March 24. After his final game, there was a shift in Nolan and the light in his eyes disappeared. His migraines continued to be on and off but the time away allowed them to stabilize for a bit. During his hiatus from hockey, Nolan became more distant and less affectionate with you. You tried to let his actions not bother you but it silently hurt you. You knew Nolan was upset with the way how his hockey season ended and you tried to comfort him and distract him from his pain but it wasn’t enough for him; it was terrifying to watch him fade away like that. Nolan was hurting a lot, not only physically but emotionally. He couldn’t quite fully escape the injuries and the lingering pressure of returning to hockey was always there. Everything in his life was centered around hockey; his identity, his goals, and the conversations people had about and with him. It was almost like he resented the sport that he was the most grateful for; hockey was the only thing people seemed to know him for and that was gone. The loss of Nolan’s hockey career would be a very challenging loss that he would grieve over but you were right there by his side to support him during this difficult time.
Throughout his recovery time, Nolan began to get rid of anything and everything that reminded him of the life that he once had but didn’t have anymore. First, it was removing the social media posts. Then, it was unfollowing his old teammates and so-called friends who never checked in on him. Finally, it was hurting you. At the end of the 2022 season, Nolan requested that you have a deep serious talk together. In the back of your mind, you knew that something big was coming; Nolan was already distant with you so maybe he needed some more time and space from you. He dropped the already expected and painful news but it didn’t make it hurt any less. Nolan expressed that you deserved better than him and being around you, unfortunately, reminded him both of his past and of a future life that he couldn’t give to you. You didn’t care about those things and it didn’t matter what he could or couldn’t do because all you wanted was him but Nolan already made up his mind to end the relationship.
You couldn’t believe that he would just give up on what you had but he did. Nolan told you he loved you so frequently but now, the feelings of love were going away. You already knew Nolan was devastated with the way his hockey career and life derailed but you never would have imagined him hurting you because of that. You were already there with him through some of the toughest moments for him and were willing to continue to stay through them; if you didn’t love Nolan as much as you did, you would have left sooner. Naturally, you tried to reason with him but everything was pointing towards the end of your relationship. It frustrated you that Nolan wanted to break up for good instead of just taking time apart from each other; you were willing to give him the time and space he desired and the hope of you possibly come back together lingered around throughout the air. You had Nolan but he ended up burning you; you thought your relationship was so solid and strong, that these setbacks and other things wouldn’t break it down but it shattered everything you built together.
Nolan blamed being young in love and wanting to meet new people as a reason for wanting to separate. Deep down, he wanted to be with someone who didn’t know or had any connection to his hockey days so that he could leave that part of himself behind; Nolan just wanted a blank slate to start over from it all but that came at the expense of the beautiful relationship you spent years in. Breaking up with you was like watching a part of himself die; you and Nolan were always separate individuals but your relationship interconnected you together in such a profound way. Nolan’s honest confession to end the relationship hurt so deeply; you could feel the pain in your chest and Nolan could feel the pain of what he did rattling in his bones. It was almost like that tingling feeling Nolan felt the day when you first met returned back.
This breakup was 100% one of those “it’s not you, it’s me” moments. Nolan felt bad about breaking your heart but he felt like the only way for him to get peace from his past wasn’t to carry things from it into his future. He wanted out because of himself, not because you were a bad person or something you did; Nolan truly did have a catch on his hands being with you but he couldn’t hold on much longer so he let you go. You held out and held on to your relationship with Nolan for so long; you sacrificed so much to be and stay with him but Nolan just didn’t want to continue. At the time, it was hard to understand why he didn’t fight for your relationship harder but maybe it was a sign that Nolan wasn’t the one for you and you were never really meant to be.
At least once every day since the first time it was shared, you would tell each other “I love you.” Now, all you could say to each other was goodbye. You could see in Nolan’s eyes that he was trying his hardest to not cry but he did anyway. For one last time, Nolan held you in his arms in a tender embrace as the both of you lost tears. Normally, a couple that just broke up wouldn’t do this but Nolan tilted your head up towards him and sealed the end of your storied relationship with a final tear-soaked kiss.
Over the course of the next few days, you packed up your respective things and began the separation, silently removing things from your shared space. Throughout your packing, you both found little mementos from your relationship; things like the paper ticket Nolan wrote his number on when he first met you, the gold N necklace Nolan gave you on your first anniversary, the birthday card you gave Nolan when he turned 23 last year, a bottle of your perfume that was Nolan’s favorite. You had also found some of Nolan’s clothes that he had given you over the years you were together. The world that you had known together had turned around and it was a lot to process; you really were beginning to enjoy your new home but now, you both had to return back to your old one. Thankfully, one of your local friends let you stay at her place in the meantime until everything was in place for you to return back to Philadelphia and Nolan stayed at the apartment. You were all his and Nolan was all yours but that was all gone. Leaving you behind wasn’t easy but he did it anyway. It was wild how you moved to Vegas at the start of the 2021-22 season and by the time the season ended in April 2022, the relationship was over.
The 2022 off-season was supposed to be different this time. At the start of the year, you and Nolan had made plans to explore Europe for an off-season couple’s trip but before the start of the summer, that trip never happened. Flights and hotels were refunded; the diamond ring Nolan had planned on proposing to you with on the trip was returned to the jewelry store. Nolan went back to his happy place at home with his family but returning to Winnipeg without you this time did hurt him a bit. As expected with returning back, Nolan had to deal with the whispers and rumors that came from people who had no idea what he was going through.
The only bright side of the otherwise sad off-season was that Nolan’s quality of life improved a lot as his migraines continued to get better with the time off; he eventually found a good regime to help him cope and he was able to do some of the things he loved, like golfing and listening to loud music. While he was home, Nolan cooked up a good plan to fly back to Philadelphia to convince you to take him back but that was all in his head; he hadn’t been to Philly since you both moved to Vegas for the trade and he never did return to play a game there. Nolan couldn’t bring himself to go back to the city that was home at one point but isn’t anymore so he let the plan go and let time pass by.
————————————————————
2022-23
The 2022 off-season turned into Nolan not returning to the NHL at all. The Vegas Golden Knights ended up winning the Stanley Cup in 2023 without him; it hurt the both of you to see Nolan’s old team succeed at achieving one of his goals. Despite the progress made in Nolan’s recovery, playing hockey full-time unfortunately never really made its way back into the picture for him.
Nolan still quietly kept tabs on you, watching you from the sidelines. You finished up your Master’s degree program and he was proud of you again, just like he was when you graduated with your Bachelor’s degree. It had been over a year since you last talked to Nolan. You tried to keep tabs on Nolan but he wasn’t really close with anyone from his old teams anymore and you only saw brief glimpses of him through his Winnipeg friends. You romantically moved on with someone new, someone who fulfilled the “if he wanted to, he would” that Nolan chose not to meet. Nolan moved on too, he met a girl in an online support group for athletes whose careers were derailed by injuries. His new girlfriend met the requirement of no hockey connections and she was great; he deeply loved and cared for her, just like he did for you.
Despite the amount of freedom you had from each other since the break up, you weren’t fully clean and still had pieces of each other left lingering all over you. You would never look at a vehicle with muddy tires the same way –they reminded you of when you and Nolan went to Hawaii for All-Star Break, rented a Jeep, and explored the island–, you would never look at anything related to ham and cheese without thinking of Nolan’s pre-game meal and how you missed going to watch him play, the migraine medication commercials made you think about the treatments that didn’t work and wondered what was helping him now. Nolan was notoriously known for his privacy and for being a lurker so you had no idea if he had truly missed you.
Sometimes, Nolan did miss you but he wasn’t going to let you know that. When the Italian restaurant that you had gone to on your first date closed down, Nolan wanted to talk to you to reminisce on those good times but he didn’t reach out, he couldn’t see orange juice without thinking about how he always kept a bottle in the fridge for you, plaid always reminded him of the flannels you wore in the fall, hearing certain songs on the radio made him wonder if you would like this song. One day, while figuring out what to listen to, Nolan came across the playlist. During your relationship, Nolan made a secret playlist called “y/n-core” and it contained all of the songs you liked and songs that reminded him of you. He listened to it whenever he missed you; when you found out about it, you made a similar playlist for him. Music was something important to both of you so deleting the playlist was hard so you both kept it; Nolan would secretly listen to it whenever he missed you and look back at old photos from when you were together and when you missed him, you would put on one of his old shirts and play it as a coping mechanism.
Looking back at the relationship, some questions began to arise. Were there any warning signs that you missed beforehand that could have indicated that the relationship was doomed? Could you blame Nolan for wanting a change? Could you blame Nolan for not changing his mind and not wanting to reconcile what you had? Could Nolan blame you for moving on when he didn’t want to stay together? Neither of you would have ever thought your relationship would have ended the way it did. It started off like a beautiful love song but it crumbled like a piece of paper when it ended. Neither of you would say that you wasted your time being together because you lived and learned throughout your relationship; you both carried those things into your new relationships. Even though you’re not sure if you’ll ever see or hear from him again, you had hoped that Nolan was doing okay and he had the same hope for you. Over time, you forgave Nolan for what he did and Nolan forgave himself for his actions. You understood why Nolan broke your heart the way that he did; he did it because he loved you so much that he willingly walked away from you so that someone better could come into the picture. Nolan’s capacity for love was enough for you but he saw it differently so you had to fully accept his decision.
Even though you’ve both moved on to new partners, your name and Nolan’s name still lingered on each other’s lips whenever either of you kissed your new lover. Sometimes, you missed the moments when Nolan would randomly interrupt you with a kiss (your new partner wouldn’t attempt such a thing) and Nolan actually missed doing it to you and couldn’t bring himself to continue that with his new girlfriend. Every now and then, the feelings of missing each other would occasionally sink in and you both would miss and think about the other. You both hated missing each other because you both had new lovers, but that didn’t prevent those feelings coming up. Sometimes, you both wished that the other would call but those calls would never come and you had to let each other go. If you somehow did end up back together, it would cause more pain than love; how do you fully trust someone who hurt you so much? You both still carried a little of the love you shared together but things would never go back to being the same. After being out of touch for so long, there was no point in trying to revitalize the relationship you had together or to even try attempting to be friends because you were both on different roads and chapters in life. The last drop of rain from the storm of your relationship dried off the pavement and there were no physical stains left behind.
————————————————————
20xx-xx (Epilogue)
Many years later, when you were chilling with your new partner at your apartment, they accidentally spilled water on their shirt so you gave them one of Nolan’s old practice shirts to wear. Seeing your new lover wear something from your old lover made you short-circuit for a minute. How can someone that you love now look so good in something that belonged to someone you loved before? Your new lover also asked you to marry them underneath a pillow fort while wearing Nolan’s old shirt with your dream ring and the date this occurred was the 19th. On a warm sandy beach somewhere, Nolan proposed to his new girlfriend on the exact same day with the same ring you wanted (his now fiancee’s dream ring). Throughout your relationship with Nolan, the number 19 started appearing more in your life and started holding more importance to you because of him. It was Nolan’s jersey number in Philadelphia (changed to 41 in Vegas), his birthday was on the 19th of September, it was part of the address of the first place you lived together, and it was the age that you fell in love with each other. The number nineteen meant something significant to the both of you and neither of you would ever forget it.

think of jo in a different profession
ignore the fact i forgot the met gala is at the beginning of may ;-;
like high fashion model Jo, maybe Jo still plays with the mooseheads but gets badlly injured during their draft year and has to stop playing. jo ends up modeling, how i dont know but i would like to see Jo invited to the met gala and asking nate to come with him cause like imagine its when the avs have a break during that time or even before of after ASG.
like the met gala is before ASG and Jo manages to convince Nate to join him as his date. Also at the met gala natejo gives the vibes off jo can walk around in peace cause he has a guard dog behind him. also this gives such a big fuck you to gary bettman, like OH not only does one of the star players of the NHL come out to the world, he does it with his hot af model boyfriend at the fucking MET GALA.
also would be funny that no one knew nate is dating jo other than sid and their family, like no shit sid knows, probably fucking walked in on those two or some shit. Get Jo to fucking dress nate, its a FINALLY for Jo cause he got sick of this usual fits.
like ahhh, maybe like interviews jo did earlier he does talk about playing jr hockey and having to stop. people dig up like OH he was GOOD and would have been drafted high, but OH he also played with nathan mackinnon and they were great together. also see people asking jo and nate about each other.
also nate being Jo's fucking HAB (husband and boyfriend) at the met gala, being HIS ARM CANDY LIKE ABDANAFJIJKNAS, fucking meeting Jo's industry friends like PLEASE. this awkward hockey boy who joined his model boyfriend for his high profile event since this is maybe like the first time theyve also seen each other or been with each other for longer than a couple hours. also jo being a fucking HAB publicly during the avs playoffs like uhsfsbjfbjkjkb.
people to nate especially during ASG, "how the fuck did you bag Jonathan FUCKING Drouin?" " we played jrs together and kept in touch"
oh my GOD losing my mind over this. like it's literally a travis/taylor moment in the pop culture zeitgeist because jo is that guy.
jo 100% does not make nate stay the whole time at the MET, jo honestly kind of hates the MET and only goes because his publicist tells him he has to. they leave early and get on a plane so they can be home on time for nate to make the team plane the next day and they fuck on the private jet because nate thought jo looked really handsome :) and also he did not appreciate That One Actor who kept hitting on Jo like nate wasn't right there (and willing to kill him)

the marauders in the nhl 👀
MARAUDERS MY BELOVEDS<333 I miss them
we all saw it coming but it has to be said—james potter is definitely the captain. I imagine him being such a cocky shit as well, like he’s good and he knows it. that video of rutger going up to collect his medal after winning with team usa? that’s james. that’s his energy. he’s confident in himself and in his team
sirius is a defenceman but he’s definitely a yapper. the boy kinda stirs shit up and he knows how to get to people, just like he knows how to use it to his advantage. there’s definitely a black family legacy of being captains but he has no interest in it
remus gives such strong goalie vibes. I don’t care what anyone says, that man is a goalie and I will hear nothing more about it. and sirius and james are the first to throw off their gloves if someone messes with him
the boys met during a training camp. they had definitely known each other vaguely but that training camp was the first time they really met each other and bonded instantly. they became an inseparable group and teams knew it would be an advantage to have them on their team
when draft day happens, they all obviously don’t get drafted into the same team instantly. remus is actually the year after because he wanted to stay in school a little longer to finish his degree before he got drafted. he ends up on the same team as james, and sirius joins after getting traded after a year or so

i was being lazy and kind of halfassed the last third of it when i was roughing out the adam/girl!rutger boys and girls can't be friends premise earlier, but fortunately the 2023 nhl draft suggested a much better ending, so here it is.
things start feeling a little... off with adam after the conversation about seamus. he’s quieter. he meets her eyes less, like he’s avoiding her without actually avoiding her. with the school year ending, everyone's around all the time, and rutger can't figure out if it's on purpose that adam's never alone with her any more.
she's determined to power through and make everything normal. adam leaves for worlds like next week. and maybe he’s never coming back, although rutger doesn’t want to think about that. but if he isn’t, they might as well make the most of it, right? (before rutger has to go back to mediocre hookups. she doesn't like to think about that either.)
adam is not picking up on her body language, which is strange since it seemed like he was kind of good at that. like, all rutger had to do was tilt her chin a little and five minutes later they’d be sneaking off together to the closest empty bedroom. but she finally has to, like, angle herself in close to him in the crowd at a party and press herself against his back and whisper into his ear let's fuck.
adam's back goes rigid. he tilts his head toward her just a little bit, not enough to look her in the eye, and says "i don't think that's what i want."
"okay, cool." rutger unsticks herself from adam's back and flounces away to the kitchen. she's not going to be embarrassed about this. she's not. friends with benefits is supposed be no strings attached, she reminds herself. she could have cut it off at any time. she can be cool about adam doing the same. she can be cool. she can prove that they can hook up, and stop hooking up, and still be friends.
so rutger's the coolest she can possibly be, and she determinedly treats adam just like nothing's changed. it still feels like something has. but maybe it's just her imagination. adam’s gone at worlds. he's busy. he doesn't have to answer her texts.
rutger swims in the lake and rides her moped with her teammates and tries to flirt with jacob at the big memorial day weekend trip to duker's, and there's still a giant hole in the center of everything. adam goes to the combine and he's all over every hockey account she follows on instagram and she doesn't know what he thinks of any of it.
she goes to the draft with her family, just like they planned it months ago. they pose for a photo, her and her sister and their parents and all the fantillis, and on the surface everything looks just like always. but adam hugs molly just the same as he hugs rutger.
that's when rutger realizes: she doesn't just miss adam texting her and competing with her and being the only other person in the world operating at rutger's level of all-in all-the-time no-bad-days. also she misses adam kissing her and touching her and taking care of her.
rutger gamely smiles her way through the pre-draft festivities and the draft and the fantilli draft party. as everyone filters out to keep the party going on broadway afterwards, she remembers she left her phone upstairs and tells them she'll catch up.
the main room of the penthouse is empty. rutger spots her phone by the window where she left it. instead of snatching it up and clattering back down the stairs, she sinks down to sit on the exposed brick windowsill, looking out at the lights of nashville. the colors go blurry as her eyes fill with tears.
well, whatever. she's been a good party girl all week and she deserves a minute to get teary all by herself in the penthouse suite, curled up by the window in her bright party dress and cowboy boots. she looks out past the river to the stadium as the neon bar lights pulse and cycle below her, and quietly admits to herself that this trip would have been much better if she was adam's girlfriend.
what a time to get a crush on adam, huh? now that they're not even friends anymore.
after a few minutes she carefully blots the tears out from under her bottom lashes with the tip of her pinky finger. she tightens her ponytail. she's gotta pull herself together to go join the party. she can do this.
the door to the penthouse opens. it's adam. of course it's adam. he stops on the other side of the pool table, looking puzzled, when he spots rutger. "everything okay?"
rutger's face crumples at the sight of him. "why are you mad at me?" she wails, abandoning all dignity. so much for being cool.
"hey," adam says, soothingly. he crosses the room and sits on the windowsill next to rutger and very gently puts an arm around her.
all that does is make rutger cry harder. here’s adam, finally touching her, letting her wrap her arms around around him and cry against his draft jersey, and none of it means anything. "why is everything so fucked up?" rutger sobs into his jersey. the edge of the cannon patch on adam's shoulder digs into her cheek.
“i'm not mad at you.” adam says, once rutger slows to a sniffle. “i just need some space." rutger's shoulders start to quiver again. "to get over it," adam adds hastily.
rutger takes a shuddery breath and sits up straight. "what have you got to get over?" she points an accusing finger at adam. "you're the one who didn't want..."
adam scoots back, palms up. "well, yeah, once i figured out you didn't like me like that."
"how don't i like you?" it doesn't make any sense. she likes adam in all the ways, every way it's possible to like someone. she chokes out the words between big gasping dramatic sobs. "we could have been everything."
rutger furiously swipes tears off her cheek. she's failing so hard at being cool. good thing adam's going to sign with columbus and disappear again and maybe she can just fall in a hole and die. she glares at him.
adam looks confused. "is that what you want?" he takes her team-damped hand and laces their fingers together. "everything?"
"of course i do," rutger says, very small, trying to not start crying again.
"me too." adam takes her tearstained face between his hands and kisses her.
#i love an overdramatic tearful girl!rutger#boys and girls can't be friends verse#take two#campfire story
