Was Shoma landing on the podium, much less the silver, for the 2018 Olys a surprise to people?
Hm...to some it may have been a surprise due to Shoma being often kept off radar in predictions BUT tbh anyone who followed skating in the 2017-2018 season or who understood the scoring could clearly see that Shoma was one of the skaters with a good chance at getting on the Olympic podium.
Just like it is somehow always the case with Shoma during his career except for last season, he was overlooked in favor of others. His chances have been there, he had among the highest BV, he had the 2nd highest personal total score among all competitors behind Yuzu, he had good PCS and his GP season was not perfect but solid. So he had really good chances. However the main focus by Japanese media and also internationally was on Yuzu and what he was capable off, so as Shoma was trailing in Yuzu's shadow Shoma was cast aside from predictions. Then there was also the hype around Nathan bc he could pull off more quads than anyone else and it was written as if one could beat Yuzu, it was Nathan not Shoma or Javi. (We all know how that pressure on Nathan went for him, but this was the situation before the Olympics)
Imo the prediction for 2018 Olympic podium were as followed:
The main contenders for the podium in 2018 were Yuzu, Javi, Shoma and Nathan, maybe Mikhail Kolyada and Boyang Jin could also have been counted into the medal contender section at that time. Those 6 had a chance and I think many expected Gold for Nathan, a medal for Yuzu and a medal for Shoma OR Javi.
Yuzu was the big favorite coming into the season, but due to his injury at 2017 NHK his condition for the Olympics wasn't clear and his win in the end is still a some sort of miracle. In the GP season Javi had quite a disaster at Cup of China and didn't make the GPF and struggled throughout the season, so it wasn't clear what he could pull off but at that point he still had the 2nd highest personal best scores for the SP and FS. Shoma and Nathan on the other hand both made the GPF. Shoma and Nathan had somewhat same chances with Shoma having the edge on PCS and Nathan on BV. (yes at that point Shoma constantly outscored Nathan's PCS!) Shoma lost the GPF with the infamous 1,0 deduction that costed him the Gold by 0,5 points against Nathan. At 4CC Shoma lost the Gold to Boyang Jin and Nathan smashed US Nationals with freaking overscored high scores.
(I'd say Boyang and Mikhail had only outsider chances for the podium bc Boyang had the technical content but a lot less PCS than the rest and Mikhail had the PCS but lower technical content and he was a lot less consistent than the others. I think his unexpected Cup of China win over Javi who placed only 6th made ppl think a medal would be possible for Mikhail.)

GP Updates
Gabrielle Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France have withdrawn from this week's NHK Trophy. At this stage, they will probably not be replaced. Guillaume has a back injury that is preventing him from training at 100% and was advised not to travel.
Wakaba Higuchi of Japan has withdrawn from next week's Rostelecom Cup due to injury.

a thread about sambo 70's dirty work
tw// abuse of young kids in figure skating
this thread was originally made by someone else on twt. i'm just posting it here so y'all can spread it. you can also translate it in different languages.
for those who don't know: sambo 70 is a major sports club in russia and the figure skaters under this club are abused by their coaches eteri tutberidze & daniil gleikhengauz
some keywords: owg- winter olympics gp- grand prix jgp- junior grand prix gpf- grand prix final fs- free skate/long routine 4cc- 4 continents cup
Thread: Eteri Tutberidze and the team at Sambo 70 have a long and horrifying history of disregarding skater health, diminishing serious injuries, and forcing injured teenage athletes into premature retirement. All of this has been enabled by the ISU, judges, and commentators.
1. Yulia Lipnitskaya OWG: 🥇 (2014) WC: 🥈 (2014) Retired at: 19 (injury & anorexia) "Eteri Tutberidze was proud to inform the press that Yulia Lipnitskaya ... sometimes existed almost entirely on a diet of 'powdered nutrients.'"
2. Polina Tsurskaya Youth Olympics: 🥇 (2016) Junior GPF: 🥇 (2015) Retired at 17 after struggling with consistency due to body changes. Polina at her prime
3. Daria Panenkova Junior GP: 🥇🥈 (2017) Retired at 17. After she left Sambo, her old coaches accused her of shirking training: "[She] once again refused to go on the ice ... she said that did not want to go to training."
4. Anastasia Tarakanova Junior GPF: 🥉 (2017) Retired at 17, citing "health reasons." She also struggled with receiving funding and federation support at the end of her career.
5. Alena Kanysheva Junior GPF: 🥉(2017) - under coach Svetlana Panova. Switched to ice dance from singles at 15 following a chronic back injury aggravated by training the 4T (Quadruple Toeloop, a jump) at Sambo. Retired from the sport entirely at 16. Alena's beautiful JGPF FS
6. Elizabet Tursynbaeva (KAZ) Youth Olympics: 🥉 (2016) 4CC: 🥈 (2019) Worlds: 🥈 (2019) Retired at: 21, but had not competed since age 19. Despite a chronic back injury, she trained and competed a 4S. She cited her health as the reason for her retirement.
7. Evgenia Medvedeva Olympics: 🥈🥈 (2018) - had a stress fracture. Worlds: 🥇🥇🥉 (2016-17, 2019) Has not competed since age 20. She can only safely execute two types of jumps due to a chronic back injury that leaves her unable to turn to the left.
8. Alina Zagitova Olympics: 🥇🥈 (2018) Worlds: 🥇 (2019) Has not competed since age 17. Alina commented that she and Evgenia were not permitted to drink water to keep their weight down at the Olympics: "We just rinsed our mouths and spit it all out."
9. Daria Usacheva Jr Worlds: 🥈 (2020) Jr GPF: 🥉 (2019) Daria fractured her hip (reported by Russian media as an upper leg injury) in warmup at the 2021 NHK Trophy, at age 15. She left in a wheelchair and has not competed since. Tw: Injury, bodily harm
10. Alena Kostornaia GPF: 🥇 (2019) Euros: 🥇 (2020) Eteri claimed Alena had refused to share the ice with other girls. When Alena returned to Sambo after a season with another coach, she was placed on a "probationary period" that required her to re-master the 3A (triple axel, one of the hardest jumps) in two months. Alena later fractured her wrist during a 3A attempt and could not compete for an Olympic spot. Eteri said, "I believe that with such an injury it was possible to skate." She is 18
11. Anna Shcherbakova (2022 Olympian) Worlds: 🥇 (2021) Euros: 🥈🥈 (2020, 2022) Sambo's choreographer, Daniil Gleikhengauz, bragged that Anna could eat two shrimp for dinner and be full, and said he was "glad that she was not obsessed with food." Anna contracted pneumonia in the fall of 2020 and visibly struggled to breathe at 2020 Russian Nationals. Her coaches gave her something to inhale at the boards, possibly smelling salts. Despite this, her "tenacity" was praised by commentators. She is 17.
12. Alexandra Trusova (2022 Olympian) Worlds: 🥉 (2021) Euros: 🥉🥉 (2020, 2022) Sat out most of the fall of 2021 due to a fractured foot, but still competed quadruple jumps in the events that she entered. She is 17.
13. Kamila Valieva (2022 Olympian) Euros: 🥇 (2022) Kamila is undefeated this season and the favorite for the Olympic title. On Feb. 8, after the team event, it was revealed that she had tested positive for TMZ, a banned substance used to increase heart metabolism. She is 15.
14. Adian Pitkeev Jr Worlds: 🥈 (2014) Jr GPF: 🥈 (2013) Left singles skating at 18. Most elite men are able to compete well into their late 20s. Spent much of his career competing on a chronic injury. Despite this, Sambo coaches persisted in having him train quadruple jumps.
Skating fans are well-aware of the horrors that arise from Sambo 70's training methods. I hope that this thread will help bring this into a mainstream light. As fans, there's little we can do, but sports authorities can and should act.
Please protect these kids.

What are 10-15 programs would you would show a new figure skating fan to acquaint them with the sport? Can be a mix of dance, pairs and singles and can be from any era
Fun question!
Pairs:
I would show Sui and Han's Spanish Romance short program from 2016 worlds, and their Rain in your Black Eyes free program from 2019 worlds, I would show no other pairs.
Men:
I would show Javier Fernandez's Guys and Dolls free skate from 2016 worlds, Patrick Chan's Chopin free skate from 2016 four continents, Shoma Uno's Dancing on my Own from Challenge Cup in 2020, and his Oboe short program from the Olympics last year, also Loco from 2017 worlds.
Women:
I would show Kaetlyn Osmond's Edith Piaf short program from the 2018 Olympics and Kaori Sakamoto's The Piano free skate from Japanese Nationals in 2018.
Ice Dance:
Literally any Virtue and Moir program, but specifically, Mahler from the 2010 Olympics, Dream a Little Dream of Me from the 2014 Olympics, Prince from 2017 Worlds, Latch from 2016 NHK, and Moulin Rouge from the Olympics in 2018.

Yuzuru Hanyu's senior SP costumes
3. Otonal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Otonal is the short program which Yuzu used during the 2018-2019 season and partly during the 2019-2020 season (he switched back to Ballade No. 1 & Seimei for 2020 4CC - for more info about the change, watch this). This program is a tribute to Johnny Weir, one of the skaters which inspired Yuzu.
In 2018, the rules of figure skating changed and the +/-5 GOE system was introduced.
With Otonal, Yuzu broke two world records. The first, at the 2018 Grand Prix of Helsinki with a score of 106.69 points (at this GP, Yuzu also broke the world record for the FS and for the total score).
Yuzuru became the first skater to score above 110 points at the 2018 Rostelecom Cup in the new system (110.53 points, to be exact), thus breaking a second world record within a couple of weeks.
Chronologically, these are Yuzu's 13th and 14th world records. The first 12 are now considered historical.
For more information about Otonal as a program check this post. For a shorter breakdown of the StSq, here.
As it generally happens when Yuzu recycles programs, his costume underwent quite a change from 2018-2019 to 2019-2020. The two versions are generally referred to as Otonal 1.0 and Otonal 2.0.
Once again, blue Yuzu costumes. It could be that the colour for Otonal is chosen to correspond to JW's own Otonal costume.
[Such a long post. Read more under the cut.]
Otonal 1.0
For the making of the costume - here
The design of Otonal 1.0 struck me as unique the first time I saw it. The short hem of the top is quite unusual, however, I like how it draws attention to Yuzu's waist. The sequins added to the high waist of the lower part of the costume contribute to this effect as well.
This is the first costume of Yuzu's which has a deep V-neck and a high collar in the back (Origin 2.0 has a similar design). I prefer this gradient to the ones the Chopin costumes had. It's a soft transition from an extremely light shade of blue (Geyser) to a darker shade of blue (Matisse). It contrasts beautifully with Yuzu's skin tone and it's easy to follow on the ice, too.
Tumblr media
The cleavage is covered with skin-coloured mesh-cloth. The ruffles on the sides of it are interwoven with sequin strips that crisscross and small rhinestones. There's also a subtle color difference between the ruffles and the cloth underneath them.
Tumblr media
The sequin-pattern travels down the front and nicely wraps around the back alongside the hem of the top.
The vertical back pattern also consists of crisscrossed sequin strips with simple sequins scattered around, a beautiful center piece of the costume. Personally, I see within this back pattern a resemblance to the traces left by blades on ice.
The upper arms and the wrists together with the back of the hands don the same crisscrossed pattern with sequins around them. The details and the way everything flows together for this costume make it one of my favorite Yuzuru Hanyu costumes ever. The blue theme is also a plus for me.
Tumblr media
At 2018 Autumn Classic, Yuzu wore skin-colored gloves. In later competitions, Yuzu chose dark colored ones as they contrast with the ice and the hand-movements, all the way to the fingertips, are easier to see. It's well-known how much attention Yuzu pays to the choreography of his programs - even his fingers have their own choreography, so it's important for us, the public, to be able to see the movements clearly.
Plus, the gloves emphasize the elegance of Yuzu's hands and gestures.
Tumblr media
Otonal 1.0 is genuinely one of Satomi Ito's best creations for Yuzu, in my opinion. It can be argued that compared to other costumes (such as Phantom of the Opera, Seimei or Otonal 2.0) the design is simpler. Nevertheless, the beauty lies in how all the elements come together and when Yuzu skates, this costume is magical.
Otonal 2.0
Ice Emperor - this is the first thing that comes to mind when I see Yuzu wearing this costume. The pose, the eyes, the spirit of this athlete, all create a stoic and confident image.
This time, the costume is a very light shade of blue - it definitely reminds me of how ice is usually shown in drawings hence my instant connection to the term "Ice Emperor".
I admit that the first photo is not perfectly showing off the colors of Otonal 2.0 nor is it too helpful for distinguishing the details. Yet, I chose this photo specifically because of the pose since I wanted to present a direct contrast between Otonal 1.0 and Otonal 2.0.
Tumblr media
This costume is much more complex than the first version, in my eyes. There are multiple shades of blue used, the gradient still being present, although, it is a subtle gradient. At a first glance and seen from afar, the costume seems to get darker from top to bottom. While this is technically true, the gradient is not uniform. The strips of material that create the 'shredded' hem can be seen to have different shades of blue. This detail enhances the beauty and uniqueness of this costume as well as allows the costume to flow naturally.
The high neckline enriches the elegance of the costume as a hint of the ruffles from Otonal 1.0 remains. The folded material on the torso seems to be a bit bulky, yet the sequins and few rhinestones manage to soften the look. I truly like the way the top has an overlapping effect based on how the material is sewed and on the angle of the folds. On Yuzu's right, they are angled to flow downwards, while the ones on his left are oriented towards the center. The effect is further supported by the sequins placement - running along the folds.
Tumblr media
While Otonal 1.0 mostly has silver sequins and sequin strips (detail which I've just noticed), Otonal 2.0 combines more sequin colors - gold, silver, dark and light blue. In the above close-up photo, the visual is stunning. What can't be seen in this photo but is noticeable in the first and last Otonal 2.0 photos are the sequins on the front that run down the 'overlap' stitch creating a beautiful more prominent strip.
The back of the costume maintains the folded fabric style with the zipper running down the middle of the back, becoming the line where the folds meet. In contrast with the front of the costume, the back pattern is formed of multiple Vs alternating from light to dark blue. Moreover, the Vs are accentuated by the sequins. The 'shredded' hem is a gentle transition between the sharp pattern and the plain black pants. The colors of the sequins used are the same as the ones on the front as expected in order to maintain the symmetry of the costume.
The sleeves are another beautiful feature of the costume. While the front and back are loaded with fabric, sequins and various gradient stages, the sleeves are light and nearly empty. This gives a balance to the costume. Also, I can't quite tell from these photos if the sleeves are almost see-through or simply very lightly colored.
Tumblr media
Nevertheless, the details, such as the faded dark blue lines together with the sequins and the dark blue cuffs, complete Otonal 2.0's look. As pointed out for Otonal 1.0, Yuzu prefers gloves that contrast with his costumes for the gestures to be seen more clearly. This version doesn't lack the gloves either and they blend in well with the cuffs.
Tumblr media
Overall, Otonal 2.0 is far more elegant than 1.0, in my opinion. Both are incredible costumes and fit the music very well (not to mention the choreography).
There's been a debate going on through my mind about which Otonal version I prefer. I'd have thought once I wrote this post (I refrain from calling it an 'analysis' since I'm simply describing the things I'm seeing) I would know.
Not a chance. I was once an Otonal 1.0 lover then Otonal 2.0 sneaked in , so now I'm indecisive. Since there's no competition needed, though, I can safely conclude that both costumes have their own vibe and create different atmospheres for the program while in motion. Otonal 1.0 is more relaxed, dare I say, playful, while Otonal 2.0 is serious and commanding all the attention.
This is a post-series that’s meant to complement the ranking of Yuzu’s senior SPs in order of personal preference
Note: The costumes are in the order I ranked Yuzu’s SPs, not in order of least favourite to favourite costume

On a Shoma rewatch adventure today...
I kept hanging at the 2018-2019 years with rewatching Worlds 2019, Olympics 2018, NHK and Skate Canada 2018...2019 CoR, 2019 IdF Gala (gala is the only rewatchable part 😅) and JNats 2019
So let's get back to memories...
I actually started rewatching because I found a video file of 2019 Worlds in Saitama and got heartbroken again seeing Shoma struggle through his FS and the disappointment was so big. I decided then, that I needed happier places and rewatched Olympics 2018, which still has my alltime fav podium.
Olympics 2018 FS - I still have so many happy memories from back when.
Tumblr media
youtube
Skate Canada 2018 FS (with a head over heels German commentary by Sigi Heinrich - video has English subs) - I forgot what a gorgeous 4S Shoma landed there and how good the FS was until the last two jumping passes
youtube
NHK Gala 2018 - in the light of the return of Great Spirit at the Nagoya Festival 2023 here is the original gala version from 2018 with the painted face by Deniss Vasiljews (German commentary with English subs)
Tumblr media
youtube
My own fancam of the IdF 2019 gala, which was like a restart for Shoma's career. The event itself was pure heartbreak and I remember how I cried and cried and couldn't stop it. But Shoma performed in the gala like a burden was lifted off him and I love the memories. (ignore my screaming 😂😅)
youtube
Cup of Russia 2019 FS practice - The FS itself was chaotic but this was the fresh start of Shoma's career and I love the perfection of this practice so pure, just great.
youtube
And finally Japanese Nationals 2019 SP with probably the best competitive Great Spirit there ever was. The moment Shoma found back his spirit and joy.
youtube
2018-2019 were probably the hardest years for Shoma in his career and a lot has happened since then. I still think all the struggle was needed or we wouldn't have the Shoma we have now. The experiences made him strong, enjoy skating again and most importantly made him realize that we as his fans support him beyond medals and titles. I love him for his honesty, his amazing skating and the joy he gives me when I see him skate. Thank you Shoma! ❤️
