Dawn on terra roxa, Cameroon
Not much sleep on a night train when this landscape appears with the sunrise.
I found a farm in Africa somewhere after Ngaoundal at the morning train to Ngaounderé…
I seem to have become less happy with the red dirt impressions later on my trip. I found this note written on a posting: "Honestly, the red shitty dust is all over my carrying gear, but not on my precious camera, lenses, Surface p3 or harddisks."
But still, that soft morning sunlight filtered throught sunrise fog and reflected from red dust and red earth make for some really nice photos.

Cameroon roadtrip overview
Most of the photos from Cameroon in my articles here were taken during a 2 week trip in the country in February 2015.
I was travel in a group including my aunt, who had worked as a nurse and missionary in the country for several years in the 1970s and 1980s, and two brothers and a cousin. The group was led by a couple who had served as missionaries in Ngaounderé in the 1980s.
During the first ten days, we travelled these parts of Cameroon. From the capital Yaoundé via Ngaoundal to Ngaoundere we travelled by train. The travel north to Benoue National park and west to Gadjiwan and south to Tibati was by Toyota Landcruiser.
Honestly, I cannot think those roads or distances could be handled by any other vehicle than the Toyota and their vehicles of the Landcruiser or Hilux kind.
From Tibati via Foumban and Bafoussam to Limbe we travelled by minibus, a Toyota Coaster, of course. The same bus brought us to Douala for our flight to Europe.
In general, Cameroon is Toyota country. The same quality in design and construction making Toyota popular in the rest of the world and in Top Gear, are extremely well suited for the demands of roads and climate in Cameroon. Including the ease of repair, even the more creative ones.
On the road to Seme Beach, we caught up with this Toyota. Or, the winner of "how much to put into a Toyota Carina E"! Each bag can take 100 kilogram, and we counted at least nine. Cameroon is Toyota-country, those cars can take a sh*tload of beating and still work.

Morning toilet by the railroad Just out of the trainstation, moving slowly through the suburban part of the town, and a big sister early morning routines show up. Its a tender moment of care and family. The classic gender roles in Cameroon are that the women and girls do all the household chores. But like most societies with ambitions, there is a change were boys and men takes greater responsibility helping out at home. http://blog.rachelchaikof.com/gender-roles-in-cameroon/ #siblings #bigsister #littlebrother #washing #boy #africa #centralafrica #westafrica #cameroon #ngaoundere #ngaoundéré #ngaoundal #sunrise #village #villagelife #2015CE #countryside #ig_countryside #Nikkor #nikkor1 #Nikon1 #J4 #10_30 #nikon1j4 (ved Ngaoundal, Cameroon) https://www.instagram.com/p/BGARzwSD-sa/?utm_medium=tumblr

At 0608 in the morning Very early in the morning and still 3,5 hours left to Ngaoundéré, it is just after sunrise and the railway station is bustling: with travelers, friends and families waiting and leaving, and people selling drinks, food and necessities. I think I saw a goat kid being bought and handed over in the seated section of the train. Ngaoundal is a crossroad town with old and new roads and main connections, like between railway and cars, and trucks and sub railways. It is a mining town and the area round is rich in farmland and forrest, so the logistic business is important. After half an hour break, we were off to the the final stretch. http://wikimapia.org/7466281/Ngaoundal-Railway-Station #ngaoundal #ngaoundéré #cameroon #kamerun #train #railway #rail #railwaystation #sale #logistics #africa #westafrica #girls #ladies #Nikkor1 #1Nikkor #Nikon #10_30mm #Nikon1 #nikon1j1 #J1 (ved Gare De Ngaoundal) https://www.instagram.com/p/20LkwBj-rx/?utm_medium=tumblr

A small track for visitor, a welcoming road home for the villagers In the early morning hours the landscape outside of the train is changing. Just a bit northeast of the Mbam Djerem National Park, the thinning forrest shows small villages coming out of the morning fog. This area is where the wet, humid rainforrest of the congo basin in the south of Cameroon changes to the savannah terrain in central Cameroon. Having left the relatively hot and humid capital Yaoundé the evening before, the night sleeper has taken us into drier, and more elevated terrain. Shortly, the first larger town Ngaoundal will be the first long stop for the train this day. https://cameroon.wcs.org/Wild-Places/Mbam-Djerem-National-Park1.aspx #kamerun #ngaoundal #morning #Nikon #Nikkor1 #10_30mm #Nikon1 #J1 #Villagelife #landscape #railway #rail #train #mist #village #road #roadtrip #2015CE #Kamerun #cameroon #redearth #landscape #ngaoundal #ngaundere (ved Ngaoundal, Cameroon) https://www.instagram.com/p/1z3bkhD-hq/?utm_medium=tumblr

There is no such thing as free music! The musicians attending the court of the lamido is dependent of donations. This gentleman brought his own attention seeker as well. The group of musicians followed the court around inside the palace area, giving small musical breaks to their deliberations. The traditions connecting music and song to fulani-leaders activities goes way back. https://www.jstor.org/stable/851075 #roadtrip #kamerun #2015CE #lamido #lamidat #musicians #horn #payments #gifts #villagelife #Nikon #NikonD800 #D800 #Nikkor #85mm #f14 #f1_4 #primelens #Kamerun #cameroon #africa #Ngaoundal #Cameroon #ngaoundere #livestock (ved Ngaoundere Palace) https://www.instagram.com/p/1-4A1Zj-ou/?utm_medium=tumblr

Making a colorful impression when taking the cows for a walk anyway The Adamaoua plateau is cattle land, and the dominant people group are the fulani, traditional cattle farmers and herders. The amount of cows, ox and calves seen on basically any trip out of central Ngaoundéré is astonishing. So you end up appreciating the herder having sense to brighten the day with a colorful work attire. The cattle in the region are african breeds, often mixed with the indian zebu, characterized by hump, large dewlap and often droopy ears. The zebu, Bos taurus indicus, was present in Africa and mixed in with local breeds several thousand years ago. Its ability to adapt and withstand high temperatures are key to their success. A visit to the main cultural and religious power house in the Adamawa region The main building of the Lamidat is an impressive building, signaling the historical rulers power invested in this position. Lamido is an english version of the fulani-language word for great leader or king. It may rank as arabian emir, a ruler of the (smaller part) of the land or realm. The Lamidat of Ngoaundéré is the cultural and religious head of the surrounding Adamawa region, the third largest region in Cameroon. It is lead by the Baban-Lamido, a leader elected following rules of male inheritance within the court. The Adamawa Lamidat was originally an emirate covering todays region, the two regions farther north in Cameroon, two provinces in nowadays Nigeria, and parts of Chad and Central African Republic. It was an emirate under the Sokoto Caliphate. In the political and administrative system of the Republic of Cameroon, the formal regional political power are with the state governors, appointed by the president. But the lamido and lamdo system of leaders in regions and villages plays an important cultural and religious role. And by that an informal yet influential political role. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamido #regional #main #administrative #office #2015CE #visit #musicians #Adamawa #regionalcapital #Kamerun #cameroon #africa #Ngaoundal #Cameroon #ngaoundere #Lamida De #Ngaoundere https://www.instagram.com/p/CRrMejNppAf/?utm_medium=tumblr

A mooooovement in the landscape The economic basis in the area stop to have a look at you, looking at them. Adamawa region, with its capital Ngaoundré, is the third largest region in Cameroon, and cattle livestock is the backbone of the economy. Large areas with grazing grounds, and a climate that favours these animals make it an obvious choice. Variants of Zebu are most common, but there are some crossbreeding with Brahman to gmo animals with dfferent properties. The cattle rotates grazing pastures, and there are large transhumane paths where animals are herded live to the cities in south for selling and consuming. Heads of cattle is a symbol of wealth, meaning that some practice hoarding instead of more sensible herding and usability of the livestock wealth. In addition to being the center of cattle breeding, the region also have wast amounts of goats and sheep livestock. Not only for the easy access to grazing, but they also can live in the towns and city. Adamawa is a region dominated by Fulan-people from old, and their dominant religion is islam. Hogs and pigs are very rare in this region for that reason. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adamawa_Region #roadtrip #animal #cattle #farming #cows #savannah #2015CE #forrest #redearth #terraroxa #steak #milk #Kamerun #cameroon #africa #Ngaoundal #Cameroon #ngaoundere #livestock (ved Haut Plateau Ngaoundere) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRmC8VDp0ID/?utm_medium=tumblr

Every good adventure starts with a train alone in an awesome landscape I like taking train trips. And I do enjoy the scenical trips, where you follow tracks laid down before modern roads decided by automobiles and their needs. It often leads to travels into areas where the only other tracks are by human walks and animal trails. The views from the train, and the train itself, gives wonderful motives, memories and perspective. And the speed gives time to reflections and afterthoughts of what you see. The railroads in Cameroon are old and of the narrow 1 meter type, but their trains and railcars are new, build by chinese manufacturers. It makes for comfortable travels, even for persons not so compact in size. We took an overnight sleeper from Yaoundé via Ngaoundal to N'guandéré. We ate dinner before leaving the capital, and had a light evening snack and early breakfast on the train, bought by our trip hosts. At the train stops there are locals selling food, drinks and misc travel necessities. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camrail #traintrip #africa #adventure #northbound #newtrain #classic #traintracks #sleepercar #2015CE #bush #jungle #comfort #traveller #2015CE #Kamerun #cameroon #africa #Ngaoundal #Cameroon https://www.instagram.com/p/CRjSH9NpLc0/?utm_medium=tumblr

A côté: Dame Marie INNA
