Bhen Alan has many identities: artist, scholar, queer man, Filipino immigrant. His textile works, which draw on the traditional weaving practices of his homeland, thread each of these various identities together and allow them to amplify and complement one another. They are his badges of honor, sources of endless inspiration. But Alan says that when he first left the Philippines for North America as a teenager, he wanted to leave who he was behind.
“When I moved to Canada, I didn’t eat Filipino food for a very long time, I didn’t speak the language, and I literally forgot Filipino gestures and movements,” he says. “I just wanted to fit in.”
Alan’s conundrum was not unique. Immigrants across the globe feel pressure to assimilate, but there is a particular Filipino phenomenon of self-erasure, he says, referred to in Tagalog as tago ng tago (TNT), representing the physical, psychological, and spiritual evasions that undocumented overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) must live with to survive. In his new show, Hidden and Hiding (Tago ng Tago), on view at the 808 Gallery through December 3, the artist explores that theme as it relates to him and the Filipino diaspora as a whole.
“Tago ng tago means ‘always hiding’—it [refers] to Filipino immigrants working abroad who chose to stay to make more money to support their families in spite of not being authorized,” Alan says. “It’s about hiding your identity from adversity, but also cementing yourself in a space that you cannot be removed from, in order for you to support your family and yourself.”

AAP Tahanan ng Sining: A Home for Artists Realized After 75 Years
For the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP), the dream of having a permanent home was a vision nurtured for 75 long years. Founded by Purita Kalaw Ledesma in 1948, AAP began as a social group with a mission to support and elevate the Filipino art scene. Over the years, it grew into the largest and oldest umbrella organization for artists in the Philippines, boasting a membership of 12,000…

BTS of #RWRBMovie: V&A
Via Amazon:
NG: I think their time together at the Victoria and Albert Museum really sticks out to me as a defining moment of their relationship. My character, Henry, really shares the last frontier of his vulnerabilities and really opens Pandora's box in a way saying plainly to Alex, ‘This is my life. I'm terrified, but I'm willing to take this risk.’
From EW:
For Galitzine, who grew up going to the museum, it was a surreal experience. "I was born and raised in London and the V&A is an iconic place to visit — the galleries, the displays, exhibitions that have been on there. To be able to witness it in such a quiet state was really bizarre. Night shoots are disorienting at the best of times. It's 5:00 in the morning, you're trying to act and be emotional, and you're in this truly beautiful, picturesque setting. It was really cool to be able to explore it. It felt a bit like Night in the Museum. It was a weird, surreal but extremely enjoyable experience."
Director Matthew López didn't know for much of the pre-production process whether the V&A would even allow them to film there. "They were very, very protective as you could imagine," he tells EW. " Especially when we told them where we wanted to shoot, which is a lot of things we could break, and I really didn't want to be the guy who ended up breaking a priceless piece of statuary. But we ended up getting permission, and that was amazing." In McQuiston's novel, this key scene takes place in the Renaissance Gallery, which López and cinematographer Stephen Goldblatt visited while scouting in London. But while we still see Henry and Alex run through that gallery, they decided to choose another due to the V&A's filming parameters. "It's not the most photogenic gallery," explains López. "It's kind of dark and it's very, very big, so there's a lot of blank space between the statues. The chances that you're going to get just a white wall behind you are good. And it's very hard to shoot in there because the rule that the V&A had for us was that we couldn't bring in any exterior lighting. We could not bring it in our own lights." But Goldblatt had an idea to work around that limitation. "He led me to this area of the museum where we did end up filming it," the director continues. "That long, beautiful corridor with all those gorgeous statues filled with very homoerotic art, as well as that narrow alleyway of busts. We came back another night after closing, and he had them turn off everything, all the lights except for the spotlights that were there, illuminating the artwork. But turning off the floodlights that lit the gallery for people to walk around in. What you had in an instant was darkness everywhere and light shining on the art." Goldblatt manipulated the light further with a dimmer switch, creating an almost sacred environment in which Henry and Alex could express their love for each other. "We did not bring in any of our own lighting," emphasizes López. "That scene is shot with the lighting that's available to us at the V&A. We decided that the scene would be the boys for the most part in shadow and the statues illuminated. It was a beautiful use of a problem to create a better solution that you could not have come up with on your own if you had no problem."
From Glamour:
“My absolutely favorite scene to film was the night we shot inside the Victoria and Albert Museum,” says López of the scene depicted here. “We arrived at 10 p.m. and filmed until sunrise. To have access to that museum at night without any other people around made you feel what Henry and Alex must have been feeling the night they go there together. What made it so special is that, for one of the first times in the shoot, it was just me, Taylor, and Nick working. No other actors, no background players. It’s a magical scene in the book, and it was a magical night for all of us.”
From HELLO:
In the film, as in the book, the pair dance together here as they vow to make their relationship work, come what may. This scene is also Matthew's favorite scene, "because it's the only scene in the film that is actually filmed at the location that it's set".  "That night was very beautiful and I think it's reflected in what you see on screen; there's a magic to that place at night and I like to think we captured it," he adds.
From NYT:
The two men under the dimmed lights were the actors Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine, and they swayed until the director, Matthew López, called “Cut!” around 2 a.m. for a lunch break. “It was just the three of us and our crew,” said López, who’s also the film’s co-writer. “It made for an incredibly intimate, really special night.”
From W Magazine:
There’s a sweet moment in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Why did you shoot in that sculptural exhibition? That’s not the gallery from the book. I went there with Stephen Goldblatt, my director of photography, and it wasn’t very cinematic. Stephen took me to another part of the museum, where we shot, with lower ceilings a more contained space with beautiful statues: David and Goliath, three women, the corridor of busts and torsos—very cinematic.

Mizuho Kusanagi 20th Anniversary: Akatsuki no Yona Original Art Exhibition
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A press preview for Mizuho Kusanagi 's 20th Anniversary, "Yona of the Dawn Original Art Exhibition'', was held on December 21st at Ikebukuro Sunshine City in Tokyo. The original art exhibition, the largest in the history of the series, will feature over 220 original drawings and color illustrations, as well as life-sized stands created through crowdfunding in advance.
The entrance features key visuals and messages from Kusanagi to the visitors, followed by a large introduction panel of the main characters, chronological chart of events in progress, and a continental map diorama set that takes place in "Yona of Dawn."
This was followed by a display of original drawings and color illustrations. The exhibition was divided into chapters in chronological order of the story, and a video introducing the chapters was played, and panels with Kusanagi's comments were displayed here and there. According to the event organizer, Kusanagi supervised not only the selection of the original paintings, but also almost everything from the color of the wall surfaces for each chapter to the interior design and framing of the original paintings. The lanterns and other items displayed in the exhibition hall were faithfully reproduced from the original works, and Kusanagi's attention to detail shone through in the exhibition of original drawings.
A life-size statue of the main characters created by crowdfunding appears in the center of the venue. Yona, Hak, Suwon, Yoon, Ki-ja, Shin-ah, Jae-ha and Zeno were three-dimensionalized in their respective costumes. The three-dimensional images can also be seen from each exhibition zone through a grid. Crowdfunding achieved a 389% achievement rate, and other impressive sub-characters in each chapter have also been made into acrylic stands. A total of 17 characters were made into acrylic stands, 15 of which were illustrated by Kusanagi.
There are also a variety of photo spots. The photo spots are modeled after the frequent encampments of Yona and her friends in the "Fire Tribe" story, the color illustration of Yona and Lili looking out over the water in the "Water Tribe" story, Hiryuu's mausoleum in the "Yonghi Memoirs" story, and the window of Suwon's office that appears on the manga cover. Visitors can sit on each of them and try to recreate scenes from the manga.
Then, visitors will go to a gallery of the anime's Blu-ray and DVD jackets and color illustrations posted on SNS. In the same zone, a diorama of Pukyu's forest, created through crowdfunding, is also on display. The diorama shows Pukyu relaxing in the water and eating acorns. Lastly, color illustrations of Kusanagi's past works and the art materials she usually uses are on display. The color illustrations included Kusanagi's debut work, "Yoiko no Kokoroe", "Mugen spiral", "NG life" and other works.
The original art exhibition will be held from tomorrow, December 22nd until January 9th, 2024. Advance tickets are available at Lawson Tickets and Loppi until today, December 21st.

A good friend of mine is going to be hit by Brazil's banning of Twitter, so I'm making this post to try and support him.
Fours is a fantastic friend and artist, he's drawn most of the commissioned art of my fursona, as well over a thousand other pieces, and I want to make sure he'll be okay as he can be in this situation.
I'm going to share all the places you can find his work, even if you only look at his pages, any support for him in this time would be heavily appreciated. Just be warned before clicking, he mostly draws smut, but it's really good.

…I started the Elden Ring DLC. Shadow of the Erdtree. Today I’ve finished the last major boss and completed it. All that’s left is to find any loot or face off against any other bosses or dungeons.
I have thoughts but its important to know I have platinum’d Bloodborne. I have a layer of patience with these kind of games you may not. Take my thoughts with a grain of salt, I enjoy speed and difficulty in Fromsoft games and I’m willing to put up with a lot of nonsense you may not tolerate.
I had an incredibly good time with SotE. Its bosses were showstoppers and its new weapons were genuinely unique and creative. I found some new mainstays and found some new spells to try out with other builds. I feel the Scadutree (shadow-tree) fragment system works, these fragments aren’t hidden if you’re exploring new areas they will pop up frequently. It makes it so level is irrelevant, its all about your build and the scadutree blessings.
I have more thoughts and spoilers below the cut. But this game has become a hot button in reference to its difficulty. As someone who ate up the old hunters dlc and ds3 fire fades edition I did not feel the difficulty was off kilter. Get some fragments by continuing into new areas.
What I will say is there’s a few bosses who have hitboxes that are not as tuned as we normally get from fromsoft designs. They’re the flagship of incredibly well made hitboxes and some enemies don’t have well tuned hitboxes. I will also say they repeat a gimmick too often of “you thought the boss’s attack combo was done? Wrong 4 more attacks”. The windows for punishing are pushed too small and the bosses get away with too many hits compared to your one attack you get in between. I think those are both valid criticisms.
Holy shit. I love so much of what they did in this dlc. From Midra to Messmer to Miquella every remembrance boss is a banger. This dlc has formed so many new core memories from turning the frenzied flame ending into a boss to stunningly beautiful rot saints and finger mothers.
Not to mention the level design. The specimen gallery is one of my favorite fromsoft levels of all time. Like an advanced research lab from bloodborne its a vertical tower. There are hanging statues and the hand of one seemed to be beckoning me so I took a leap, and I was correct. That was what they wanted me to think.
My build was Str Fai and I found a number of insanely fun weapons to use on ng+. The Light Greatswords are super fun to use especially with Wing Stance. The Blacksteel Hammer is crazy good at guard counters. The Greatsword of Damnation makes pvp so much fun and has the craziest tracking I’ve ever seen on a weapon art. There were also so many weapons outside my build that look crazy fun to use, from new rot incantations to intelligence twin light greatswords to a wide array of arcane based weapons.
When I discovered who the final boss was there were howler monkey sounds. Radahn was the only demigod we did not fight at full power and now we get to, just as I the player am at full power and that fight did not disappoint.
Theres so much richness to indulge in with the DLC and it absolutely rewards a curious mind. Its one of my favorite things fromsoft has released and after it marinates and I get time with it I’ll absolutely do it again.

These I drew over the past 2-3 weeks! They're my lovely OCS, left to right, Lucille, Mara and Sabrina! They're story is a big fat beautiful shit on JK Rowl*ng! Lucille is a black lesbian successful trans woman/future magic council-woman, Mara is a japanese-american hard-headed/bold sapphic woman/future professional magical athlete, and Sabrina is a plus-size queer woman/future professional magical plants necromancer! They're in my twist on Harry Potter universe, where they all go to magical university, and the point is that Mara and Lucille are infamous school rivals, but then fall in love/fall in love with Sabrina too! A magical gay polycule if u will, I've written 2 short stories about them for my fiction class so far!

irl photos under this text block!
These are actually being projected across pages in a fake photo album/prom guestbook thingy, fully interactive so u can turn the pages and it shows a new animation, like a magical storybook! Also, since it's prom themed, I made it a kinda guestbook/sign book so gallery viewers can get some glitter pens I left out to sign the end of it! I also have a playlist I made playing in the gallery along with it so it's like what they'd play at this prom! :) hope that made sense!
The content is that the girl you see walking around in white is getting social anxiety/stressed out, to the point of dissociating, as a way of doing my theme I've kept up for university of things appearing darker than they initially look (hence the colors + I love colors), and to bring awareness to mental health!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
welp, didnt mean to include all that black space, but that's my artist statement too! (u cant see the prints in the pictures, that's just my interactive piece I was talking about!)

Shots ni Jade yan. Natutuwa ako dahil wala naman akong candid shots dati. Hahahahaha!

BLOG #4: Art Patron Profile - Art Patronage and Exploitation
Tumblr media
Retrieved from: MetMuseumPH, 2022
Looking into the deeper side of arts, there is a system termed “art patronage” wherein artists are being commissioned by patrons to make an artwork depending upon their request. These patrons are usually comprador bourgeoisies, whom are influential individuals belonging to the upper class, allied with foreign investors and corporations. Initially, what we think would be the beneficiaries of this system are the artists, as they get to be paid and at the same time have exposure from their commissioned artwork. But realistically, in a deeper critical perspective, patrons actually benefit much more from this system. They may use this opportunity to raise their prestige and wealth by using the artwork to boost their reputation publicly, and gain tons of connections with other influential investors and such. And in its nature, art patronage is also bound to exploitation and dispossession.
Tumblr media
Retrieved from: MetMuseumPH, 2022
One particular example of such art patrons is Joselito “Butcher” Campos. Campos is the founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, one of the notable museums in the country. The museum was originally established in 1976 as a location for international art exhibitions with the goal of increasing cultural diplomacy while increasing Filipino exposure to other cultures' visual arts. The focus then changed to fostering local pride in the Filipino people's own aesthetic and cultural history, which is principally represented by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' (BSP) valuable collections of prehistoric gold and pottery. Being a venue that provides various visually-appealing sights of art for the masses, it’s a fact that there are already numerous commissions that have been negotiated behind all these arts from different artists. It is undeniable that artists, especially new ones, benefit a lot from the transaction as they get commission and exposure from the patron’s gallery. However, on a deeper side, patrons actually benefit much more from this as they can use it to accumulate wealth, obtain greater connections, and gain more social and class prestige.
Tumblr media
Retrieved from: Bilyonaryo, 2021
While being the founder of MET Museum, Campos also founded NutriAsia in 1991, which led to the acquirement and consolidation of smaller food companies into what is now one of the Philippines’ leading producers of condiments. What many people do not know behind this big company is how vile the workers are being treated despite their service of labor. Activists launched a boycott campaign against them for underpaying workers, detrimental workplace and working conditions, as well as unfair compensation compared to workers’ labor. The campaign resulted into a bloody fight, wherein many activists got heavily injured and some went missing after being violently dispersed by the company themselves. After the issue, the company got away with it and still remained one of the leading producers in the country. Whereas people fighting for their rights got neglected and worse, received violence in return due to the opponent’s power.
Tumblr media
Retrieved from: Bulatlat
In the controversy’s connection to art patronage, since Campos is known to be an art patron, his image to the public may be seen as someone who is giving the act of “generosity” to artists. He gains trust and a good reputation from the masses, thus masking what NutriAsia company did to their workers. It’s deceptive how his Art Gallery aims to expand the public’s appreciation to the Philippine culture, when at the same time his condiment company violates the rights of individuals who are part of our own culture. This leads into a conclusion that art patronage is not just a simple act of generosity. Some are being done to accumulate power and thus attain the ability to cover a dark truth behind their regime.
This is another attestation that art is beyond its aesthetics and visual attributes. Art can be political and can be attributed to certain ideologies that can mold different human perspectives.
