Well, I do have a pleasant amount of fat upon my delightful body... but also I actually haven't experienced temperatures THAT low in a while. In the Pacific Northwest it almost never gets below 20 degrees.
-7... Well, at least you're headed in the right direction.

She may no longer be living in the frozen wastes, but I am. Here in Calgary, the average high in February is 1°C and the average low is -12°C. In January, we had a couple days around -20°C, and there's been times when Calgary has reached -40°C.

Not quite what Krizak's seen, but earlier in January it hit -32 C here
Oh lord. You're snow zombies. Well-spoken, internet-using snow zombies who died years ago in antarctic weather conditions because you had the hubris to try to live where humanity was never meant to be. I'm so sorry.

Buildings falling down and crushing you is far preferable to snow making buildings fall down and crush you.
See? A second opinion. I knew I was right.

So..one quanta of physics yet?
Haha. It's just one quanta of quantum, and then I have a quanta of a degree in physics. Lucky for me, I don't start until March, so I have time to get reacquainted with the odd world of quantum. (so many differential equations)

So I'm randomly browsing on free wifi while waiting for food, and I see a headline.
"Watch This Couple Get Engaged While Wearing Ninja Turtle Costumes"
And I swear, my first thought was, "But I thought Donny and Dysto were already married..."

nfdystopian replied to your post “Snapshots of School Days, April 2nd-April 3rd 2014”
This is beautiful. Painful, but beautiful. Though you are in pain, you are beautiful and I love you.
Thanks. Love you too. :) I don't feel particularly beautiful though.

Hey it's not the language's fault it only got a C+ in computer science.

i wish c++ wasn't legit the only programming language i've used but it's not like i have done any programming in the last two years anyway
agh it's such a terrible language and yet it's what they usually teach beginners with. I have never understood why.
donnys-boy replied to your post “On top of that, the way that C++ handles arrays is just the dumbest...”
I do not know anything about C++, but I am gathering that is a very frustrating programming language. :(
A big part of my frustration is that C++ is one of the least math-friendly languages out there, and my brain is very much that of a mathematician...

I find myself these days coding ground-breaking nuclear physics simulations in FORTRAN.
I actually haven't worked in FORTRAN before but... if I remember correctly it was actually created for scientific computing?
Although it is like fifty years old, so... yeah.
Fortunately this is just for one freaking class; for my dissertation work I'm learning Magma which is specifically for combinatorics/abstract algebra and it's well-suited to math brains and I'm SO HAPPY

Commission for Dysto of Donny's Boy hard at work on a story while Fizzle Pop looks on lovingly at a writer engaged in his passion.
He only needs two keys, one for angst and one for makeouts.

So the Grandstand Show at the Calgary Stampede opened with a musical routine that struck me as strangely steampunk, so I idly thought of nfdystopian.
Then later, people started dancing with Tesla coils, and that thought was upgraded from "idle" to "urgent."
#nfdystopian#Calgary Stampede#Grandstand Show#there was also a musical duel between a beatboxer and a tap dancer#but I didn't get any pictures of that

nfdystopian replied to your post “Batman/Little Shop of Horrors AU with Poison Ivy as Seymour, Harley as...”
Interesting! I dig it! Especially Harley as Audrey, I think that's my favorite casting
I like it too. See, what prompted me to put Ivy into Seymour's role was that, prior to her whole... experience with the plants, she was shy, mousy, pushed around. Similar to Seymour. And then came along one incident with a plant... I think she'd jump off the slippery slope faster than Seymour tho. Probably wouldn't care too much about the sacrifices, until Harley got hurt.

nfdystopian replied to your post “nfdystopian replied to your post “I totes agree with you re Pluto....”
That they found something unexpected when looking for something else is part of the process, though. It'd be like calling the Rutherford gold foil experiment "rinky dink" because they found a nucleus instead of a big, spread out mass in atoms.
It's not that they found something unexpected; it's that they went into the search with an unverified assumption (that Uranus' deviation was caused specifically by a massive planet past Neptune, rather than anything else -- an assumption that the nature of the deviations already gave them mathematical cause to doubt) and when they found Pluto, they took it as hard evidence that their assumption was correct.
I mean, they calculated Pluto's mass as greater than Earth's at first because they were calculating it based on the effect they assumed it had on Uranus' orbit. The frustrating thing, to me, about the search for Pluto is that the Lowell group were so monomanaically focused on finding Planet X that they warped the nature of discourse around the problem. They knew what they wanted to find, and they interpreted all their results with the assumption that there was no other explanation. (For example, the fact that Pluto was the only planet with no resolvable disk should have been a hint -- at their calculated mass, its density would have been unheard of.)
The gold foil experiment is like the exact opposite -- they went in looking for verification of the plum-pudding model, found something unexpected, then built a new and more accurate model to reflect what they'd found instead of trying to hash their results to match their preconceptions.
(I admit that insulting the telescope isn't necessarily justified, though. I've been to Lowell and it's gorgeous.)

Dysto: Are you okay?
Donny: No.
Dysto: You shouldn't read the comic.
Donny: It's too late. I read the comic.
Dysto: Oh. Well, you should unread the comic.
Donny: How am I supposed to do that?
Dysto: Read it backward. He'll start off being dead and then get undead.
