The Japanese woods are filled with mystery,avatars ,deities ,gods and goddesses ready to snatch your soul if you are lost .Hiking these islands interiors are a treat for the soul ,forgotten stone shrines dressed in moss and small jizo statues placed along trails where travelers often hiked between hamlets .This bodhisattva is the protector of travelers a deity that also protect the souls of unborn children, and after birth as well. It is a comforting seeing them in places that are so treacherous and high mountain passes , wet slippery and mossy narrow trails where if you misstep,there’s nothing stopping you but the end of the precipice in complete darkness. Yes,the hills,valleys ,cliffs and the mountains of the Japanese topography is indeed gorgeous but quite difficult to traverse ,with hundreds of streams , rivers ,rapids , waterfalls and dark pools and eddies that are only meant for those hikers with a diverse set of skills in river crossing and mountain climbing.Then there’s all kinds of critters and insect like gnats, mosquitoes, leeches,spiders ,snakes ,salamanders,turtles ,bats to name a few.Perhaps if you ever come to Japan to explore its interior villages tucked among bamboo groves ,temples and shrines you will find my words true and echoing an ancient culture as this one .Words by Sergio GuymanProust.
