pairing: paul x reader
summary: reader meets the boys for the first time, and they only truly take a liking to her because of how sharply paul’s interest spikes when he first lays eyes on her.
warnings: none
au: first lost boys fic kinda scared ngl :(
as much as you wanted to call santa carla your home, nowhere has ever felt like home to you. you wanted nothing more than to find somewhere - or someone - who could make you finally want to stay. yet for some reason you had always had an overwhelming urge to keep moving and always travel, hopefully one day finding the place that had been screaming your name for years.
you weren’t going to lie, santa carla had a homey feel to it - as homey as a murder capital could get - and you were hoping this would be the place. it’s been a year since you left home in new york on your motorcycle, traveling across the united states and stopping momentarily in every place you passed through. however, nowhere truly called to you and in the end, you just kept moving. driving into santa carla was a show on its own. as soon as you made it into town, you were welcomed by a beautiful boardwalk with an amazing variety of rides, shops, and food joints. sure, some of the people walking around didn’t look the friendliest - but who would willingly put themselves out there in a place where the vulnerable are never heard from again.
it was already dark out by the time you arrived, so you wasted no time and almost immediately parked your bike in the boardwalk parking lot among the other cars and walking back in the direction of the boardwalk. tonight would most likely be yet another night spent alone in a dirty hotel room, and even if you decided to stay the only thing your savings would let you afford for now would be a small shaky apartment somewhere deeper in town.
you’d need to find somewhere soon before you ran out of money, a job would help with that if you could ever find a place that you could stay in long enough to actually get hired somewhere.
refusing to dwell on how desperate you are to find a home, you grinned as you practically pranced around the long strip of games and small shops. weaving your way in and out of people you eventually made your way into the closest - and least occupied store - a video shop. a man was standing at the main counter with a large white dog laying at his feet. "hello young lady!" he greeted with a large grin tugging at his lips. "you look in need of a shopping spree. how can we help? we’ve got the best selection of videos and tapes in all of santa carla!" you grinned at his eagerness to sell some of his items and you were always a sucker for appeasing to older folk's wishes.
"just looking for some cassette tapes, got any?" you smiled admiring the large selection of patches adoring the inside of the glass counter top.
"quite a few. they’re over towards the back wall if you wish to browse."
"awesome, thank you." you smiled at him before walking around the entire center of the shop towards the back wall where, indeed, there was shelves of different cassettes.
you skimmed through the rows of them trying to find anything that would suit your taste before ultimately giving up after realizing it wasn’t in your best interest to be spending money in such a care-free way. you made your way back around the shelf and began walking towards the exit at the front of the store when four boys on motorcycles pulled up to the entrance. they all shut off their vehicles and stepped off of them rather quickly, following the platinum blond into the shop in a line. the dog laying on the floor lifted its head and its lips pulled back in a snarl as they made their way further into the building. the man at the front - who you presumed was max - hardened his glare as he watched the four young men waltz through the place.
his attention soon shifted from them however as a couple came in and began asking him questions about what kind of tapes he had in the horror section. your eyes wandered over each boy, taking in their appearances and clothing choices.
the blond at the front looked to be the most layered up. dressed in all black, he carried himself in confidence and had a dark sort of aura surrounding himself. the smallest at the end of the group was leaned over the counter, grinning at the girl working alongside the older man. she shook her head at him with a dismissive grin before turning to continue organizing the jewelry decorating the short stands atop the counter. his colorful jacket was hard to miss and long blond curls fell down his back. the next to follow the platinum was a much more serious looking dude with longer dark hair and dark eyes. he had no shirt on underneath his leather jacket, showcasing a pair of abs that would have made you blush in any other circumstance. however, you were much more focused on the twisted sister fella who was running his fingers along the vinyls lining a shelf. "yo marks, they got a metallica one!"
"no way man, metallica's not on vinyl." curly turned from his position at the counter to cock a hip at the blonde.
"yes huh, come 'ere!" you were too invested in watching the blondes argue over if it was worth it to steal the vinyl to notice the platinum walking over to stand beside you.
"see anything you like?" you jumped and let out a small yelp as you turned quickly to look at him. he was a good foot taller than you and his face was mere inches from your own. you’d be lying if you said he was less intimidating up close than he was farther away.
"h-huh?" you squeaked out stepping a few feet back so you both weren’t so close to each other.
"the cassette collection. have you seen anything you've liked?" he smirked as he placed an unlit cigarette between his lips. you were too nervous to realize that they hadn't even pulled up until after you’d walked away from the cassette shelves.
"oh, no. uh, nothing that sparked my interest." you confirmed giving him a shy smile as you tried to turn and make your way out of the store. you didn’t make it far before you ran straight into someone's chest and fell backwards. whoever it was caught you by your bicep and helped steady you. you looked up to lock eyes with twisted sister and you could practically feel your face turning bright red as he shot you a pretty smile.
"watch out babe, you could run into the wrong people here." he spoke smoothly with a humorous tint to his words.
the curly-headed one laughed at his words. "you’re new around here, huh? we'd remember a pretty face like your own."
you ignored the flirtatious undertones of his comment and just nodded in confirmation. "yeah, just stopping in. i’m y/n." you introduced yourself shyly, not really sure if they wanted an introduction or if they were just messing around with you before taking off into the crowds of the boardwalk. platinum smirked at your words before gesturing for you to follow him out the store. you found yourself listening to his request before you could even really ponder why he needed you outside the store in order to introduce himself.
once you stood with them at the bikes they each stopped to lean against their respective vehicle. you found yourself leaning against the railing as you watched their every move carefully - trying to decipher if they posed a threat or not. "what are your names?"
"david. that’s paul, marko, and dwayne." platinum introduced shortly as he finally lit up the cigarette between his lips. you waved at them and shot each one a smile.
"why don’t you come hang out with us for awhile babe?" marko grinned at you, ignoring paul who slugged his shoulder after.
"oh, uh that’s quite alright. i should probably get going." you lied through your teeth knowing that you’d have to spend at least an hour driving around town for miles to find a hotel willing to rent you out a room at this hour.
"we insist." david grinned with a sinister kind of look in his eyes. "you can ride with paul and we'll go hang out back at our spot overlooking the point."
"oh that’s alright, really." you tried to persuade them. "my bike's in the parking lot, i really should be heading back to my hotel."
"hotel? oh come on babe, if you’re staying in a hotel that means you really have nowhere you need to be. just come hang out for awhile, we promise we don’t bite." paul teased leaning forward over his handlebars a bit. "as for your bike, they don’t tow vehicles left over night. you can come back and get it tomorrow. please?" he pouted at you and you felt yourself slowly weakening at the look in his eyes.
"alright, alright fine! but no alcohol, i’m not getting drunk around a bunch of punks i just met." you gave up and threw your hands in the air.
david nodded and mounted his bike after putting out his cigarette. dwayne copied his actions and they all started their rides. paul smiled brightly at you and held out his hand to help you climb on behind him. "hold on sweets." and just like that, they took off down the walk. after weaving through the crowds for a few seconds they rode down a short flight of stairs causing you to squeak and cling to the blond in front of you a little tighter.
"don’t worry, i have years of experience!" he called over his shoulder to you whilst laughing to himself.
"tell me why i don’t believe that!" you shouted back as they sped down the beach. after a couple of seconds you began to relax a little more as you felt the wind blowing your hair in multiple directions.
you grinned as you lifted your head from his back to feel more of the wind, and let out a small laugh as you loosened your grip the tiniest bit on his waist. he smiled back at you before he joined the others in hooting and hollering in joy. soon you were speeding through the supports of the docks and before you knew it, the boys were swerving left and right down a dense path through the woods.
not even minutes later the boys slowed their bikes to a stop near the bluff. paul stood from his bike before turning to offer you a hand off. they led you down a staircase on the side of the cliffs which ultimately led into a cave.
"woah..." you awed as you spun in circles, taking everything in.
"amazing, isn’t it?" david grinned at your response as he took a seat on an old wheelchair. "this place used to be the hottest resort in santa carla, too bad they built it on a fault. when the big one hit san francisco in '06, this place took a header right into the crack."
"and now it’s ours." marko interrupted his story by dancing around atop the old fountain. "you like?"
you nodded with a small giggle. "it’s amazing! obviously a little dusty," you remarked sliding a finger across a table to collect the layer of dust settled on it. "but beautiful nonetheless."
"you just moved here?" david asked. "looking for a place to stay?"
"oh, no i didn’t move here." you explained quickly. "i’ve just been driving around the states since last july. trying to find somewhere to call home and nowhere's called my name yet."
"except this place." dwayne remarked for the first time that night. "this place is giving you an odd feeling."
"yeah..." you mumbled, furrowing your eyebrows at him. "how'd you tell? that desperate?"
he shook his head with a small smile. "instincts i guess."
"you should stay here." paul suddenly spoke. "with us. with me."
you locked eyes with him and quite literally felt the rest of the world melt away. you’d never seen eyes that color blue, and in that moment you wished it was the only color you could have the pleasure of seeing for the rest of your life. as quickly as you were sucked into the trance, you quickly snapped yourself out of it. "you guys stay here?"
"hell yeah doll. no parents, no rules, just party all day, everyday." he jumped down from the fountain and wrapped both arms around your shoulders from behind. "just look around. you could stay here, young and wild forever." he chuckled at the last comment, and the way he said it almost made it seem like he was making some kind of joke to the others that only you weren’t in on.
"at least think about it sweets." he grinned and kissed your temple as your vision slowly started fading in and out. you watched as the other three stood and began making their way towards you.
"sleep, y/n." david lulled quietly. "there’s plenty time to make a decision when you wake."
you could’ve sworn you had just blinked, but when you opened your eyes again you were laying in a cheap motel room with a feeling sort of like a hangover that you had no explanation for.

Summoning An Ancient Jackass Pt 4 (Gilgamesh, Hakuno)
Previously: One, Two, Three
___
The first thing that had to change was the state of the place.
She had a building to herself and he could appreciate that, but the state of the place was horrendous. Dust on the shelves and dishes piling up in the sink. Whomever her servants were, they were lacking.
No, he knew better.
She had no one to care for her and she had no family.
No family member would allow a woman like this to live in this manner. A father would have been hounding her, taking a belt if needed. A brother would have been harassing her. A sister would have been mocking her. Instead, there was nothing and no one. He saw no trace of personal touches in her home, merely trinkets here and there and everywhere.
The first thing that had to be done was the removal of these false documents.
All of them had to go.
The complaint tablets, the prayer tablets, the tablets on bogus cures to ailments that were never afflictions in his kingdom; all of them were ones he hauled down to the basement of her home. The webs and the dirt suited their very nature.
Now then, with those gone, the next task was what to do about the tablets that were here that were worth something.
Worth something was overly generous.
What use was there in tablets discussing farming disputes and other things of such mundane nature?
No, she wanted things of actual interest.
The furniture had to go.
The moment he started pulling from the gates, he was wrinkling his nose.
He wasn’t cleaning any of this.
This required slaves.
Two hours had a crew cleaning the space. Her furniture was out by the road, useless to him as he now lay in the lap of luxury.
The sun poured into the room as golden adornments showcased themselves against the dark woods in the place. The walls were covered from their poor colors. The ceilings no longer held that musty feeling to them.
His eyes drifted up to the women setting up the curtains, his hand waving casually.
“Place them properly.”
Misaligned curtains would ruin the entire view of the view to the outdoors. They would create a focal point that would take away from the room. The splendor of the room was the fact that the décor and the feel of the room brought eyes to him. He was the centerpiece, the missing element.
“WHAT HAPPENED IN HERE?!”
Hakuno was up.
Too soon, but he couldn’t help but notice the way her eyes swept through the room.
He had a talent for home arrangements, just as he had talent in all things.
“What happened to my house!? Who are you people?!”
“They are workers.” Gilgamesh clapped his hands, bringing forth the food from earlier. “Eat your breakfast, mongrel, then praise me properly for-“
“Where are my things?!”
“Your things were dusty slabs of wood and clay falsehoods. Now you have precious golden belongings and statuary that belonged to the Uruk people. Don’t you feel-“
“WAIT!”
The woman looked around, her eyes widening as she looked around.
“Wait… No, they shouldn’t be touching any of this.” Hakuno looked around, her gaze going to those who were working on cleaning the items in the house. “Hold on! I have to get a- Gilgamesh! Get them out! I have to document everything!”
Document?
Good gods, the woman had a one track mind.
“No no no no no!” Hakuno stopped one of the cleaning servants, ushering them away from a statue of a bull. “Do not clean the statues, please. Just leave them be. Adjust the curtains on the walls and make sure the lighting is good.”
Make sure the lighting is good.
The woman came back, her sweater inside out and her hands gripping the camera in her hands like a lifeline.
“I need the curtains open,” Hakuno gushed, moving to the windows and where two workers were. “If you could move it a bit- yes! Move it right.”
The workers glanced his way, but he waved them off.
How amusing.
The camera was clicking away, making small sounds as the woman moved around each of the objects by the window. Her attention moved, her hands shaking as she looked over the script on some of what he was seeing.
“Hakuno.”
“Hold on. Hold on.”
“Are you aware that your blouse is hanging open for all the world to see?”
“That’s nice.”
The woman was still clicking away, her whole person beginning to wiggle away at the sight of the various objects.
That’s nice…
Gilgamesh moved to stand up, clapping his hands and calling for everyone to gather together.
“That is enough for today. First thing tomorrow morning, I want every single one of you cleaning up this space and ensuring that not a single object gathers a spec of dust.”
The group nodded, filing out.
He wrapped the shirt around his master a bit more as a couple glanced her way once again.
“I imagine that the items here must be to your liking.”
“Liking? You have pieces that I’ve never even dreamed of! Where and when were each made? Do you know the stories behind them? Do you think we can find a way to effectively authenticate them?”
“Master,” Gilgamesh held up one of the thin, chocolate filled breakfast sweets that the servants he’d hired through that phone had made. Those golden brown eyes followed it with mounting interest. “I imagine that you want to ask a great deal of questions, don’t you?”
“I do.”
“And I imagine more items and objects to admire and preserve the quality of would be to your liking as well, correct?”
Her hands were taking the sweet from him, reluctantly, he noted. She was being careful about his temper today.
Progress.
“I will dress you, command you throughout the hours when the sun is not in the sky, and, in return, you may spend every second of Utu’s journey across the sky each day inquiring and admiring every facet of Uruk culture.”
The woman stared at him, carefully swallowing her food. “you mean it?”
He had a war to win.
The other servants and their masters would be throughout this city by now. He had no time to waste in this nonsense. However, he had little doubt that the fools were working throughout the night.
Night hours were the hours of mongrels and deviants.
Like the weeds that they were, these mages and their pets would not indulge in the daylight hours for their fights. They would run when eyes were closed and when people were at their weakest.
“You have a deal,” Hakuno agreed. “Command away, my king, but know that I have a lot of questions.”
Gilgamesh smirked, heading for where her bedroom had been.
First, he would investigate whether or not he needed to fix the fool’s attire.

Paper knights (pt. 1)
Sitting on the edge of my plush baby blue bed I sigh as I place my sketch book next to me. The afternoon light trickles into my room through the window above my desk. My room is rather small with a bed sits next to my desk in a corner. And behind my desk is a small dresser. I lay back on my bed with my legs hanging off the side. I brace myself when I hear the pitter patter of feet running to my bedroom door. My door then bursts open, and someone jumps on top of me.
“WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WAKE UP!!!” Sarina screeches into my ear.
“Hey that hurts!” I whine holding my ear as Sarina giggles on top of me. “I’ll get up ok, now out.” I command.
Before Sarina leaves the room, she turns to me. “Oh! Mom and dad left on another business trip so come make breakfast please!”
I sigh slightly annoyed. I walk over to my tall black dresser and open the top drawer and grab a grey shirt with a paint brush on the front and a sports braw. After closing the first drawer, I open the second one and grab a pair of dark blue jeans and a pair of underwear. Closing that drawer, I open my sock drawer and grab a pair of light pink socks. Taking off my white silk night gown. I put on my cloths and walk over to my desk and grab my phone off the charger and headphones. I also grab my hairbrush and run it through my long strawberry blond hair. I like to leave my hair down most of the time.
Stepping out of my door I walk down the hall that leads to the living room. Our living room has a large flat screened TV mounted on the wall. About 7 feet from the TV is our charcoal grey L-shaped couch. Between the couch and the TV is a small coffee table that sits on a colorful rug. Behind the couch is a hall that leads to the front door, my parents’ bedroom, and their offices. At the side of the living room is a large arch way that is framed by sticks and twigs.
I walk through the arch into the dining room. In the center of the room is a large dining pine table that is supported by a large pine tree trunk. At the sides of the table are six hand carved chairs each one slightly different from the other. Hanging from the ceiling is a deer antler chandelier with electric flame lights. On west side of the walls are pictures of our family. A grandfather clock sits beneath the photos ticking loudly. At the northern part of the room is another arch with the same design as the last.
Walking through it I enter my destination the kitchen. On the wall across room the arch way is her mother’s pride and joy two restaurant grade stacking convection ovens. Next to the ovens is an antique woodburning stove that only gets used in black outs, and when mom wants to use the bread drawer. Directly next to the wood stove is a marble counter that wraps around the wall and stops two feet from the arch, and about three feet from the wood burning stove is a gas range built into the counter. On the wall behind the gas range cast iron pans hang from hooks. Resting above the rest of the counter space are cupboards. At the center of the room is an island table on wheels. The island table has a bowl of fruit on top of it, and on the bottom shelves are bowls and cooking utensils.
Walking over to the cupboard next to the gas range. I reach up to the cupboard and open it and grab the pancake mix. After I set it on the counter, I close the cupboard. I turn around and reach to the island table and grab a bowl and whisk I then set it next to the pancake mix. I then walk over to the fridge and grab four eggs and four strips of bacon. Setting the eggs on the counter next to the items I had out. With my spare hand I grab a cast iron frying pan off the wall and set it on the range and lay the strips of bacon in the pan.
Starting the stove, I bring it to a low heat. While the pan was getting warm, I started work on the pancake batter. Once I finish the batter, I flip the bacon pieces. While waiting for the beacon to cook I grab two plates. Once the beacon is nice and crispy, I take it off the pan and set two pieces on each plate. I then pour some of the batter into the pan with the beacon grease. I flip the pancake and gently press on it with a spatula. I perform the same process for the next three pancakes. I place two pancakes on each plate. I then spread some butter on the tops of the pancakes. Smiling to myself I crack the four eggs into the hot pan. Gently flipping the eggs, I call out to my sister.
“Breakfast is ready! If you don’t come here ill eat it for you!” I yell with a smirk on my face as I hear frantic running.
Smiling I place two eggs on each plate. Taking the plates in my hands I waltz into the dining room and one of the plates in front of my giggling sister, and the other on the opposite side of her.
“Here is your breakfast my lady.” I bow and giggle.
In an English accent Sarina responds “I approve of this breakfast loyal servant of mine. Now, where is the syrup?”
I gasp and place my hand over my heart “I am deeply sorry my princess I shall go and fetch it for you now. Oh! By the way my lady would you like milk or tea?”
Sarina taps her finger to her chin and smiles “I would like milk dear servant.” With that she shoos me away with her hand.
I giggle and walk back into the kitchen. Grabbing the milk from the fridge and two cups from the cupboard. Filling the cups with milk I place the jug back in the fridge. Reaching up to another cupboard I grab the syrup and begin to waltz back to the dining room.
“Your milk and syrup my lady.” After I set the things in my arms down onto the table we double over in laughter. “We are weird!” I laugh as I move to sit in my place across the table.
“No, you are the weird one Ziny!” Sarina giggles
I gasp in shock and hold my hand to my heart “You have wounded me with your mighty sword of words dear sister! Why are thou so cruel to your older kin?”
Sarina sighs and smirks “You know I don’t understand your weird words dear Ziny.” She says sarcastically.
I giggle “Well we better eat breakfast before it gets cold.” I smile and pick up the syrup and drizzle some on my pancakes. I then pass the syrup to Sarina. “After we are finished with breakfast we need to head to school.” Sarina groaned and nodded her head.
The rest of breakfast continued in a comfortable silence. Once finished I picked up the plates and entered the kitchen to wash them. Placing the plates on a drying wrack I wash the other dishes I used and put away what I left out. Stoping in the arch of the kitchen I see Sarina doodling on a piece of paper with her backpack on her back. However, I noticed she forgot to change out of her night gown.
“So, do you plan on going to school in a night gown and rag muffin hair or are you going to go and change into some proper cloths?” I smirk as I lean against the arch. Sarina’s eyes widened as she looked down at what she was wearing and scrambled away from the table and dashes towards her room.
I shake my head and chuckle. Walking into the living room I grab my backpack and swing it onto my back. Five minutes pass when Sarina bursts out of her room and runs up to me. She wears light blue jeans, a pink unicorn cat shirt, silver sparkly tennis-shoes, and her hair is tied up into two small pigtails.
“That looks much better you ready to go my rug muffin?” I say as I shift slightly.
“I am not a rug muffin!” she states as she puffs out her cheeks.
“Oh, forgive me how about monkey instead?” I cross my arms and smirk.
“I am not a monkey either! Let’s just go.” Sarina huffs.
I chuckle turn around and walk towards the door. Opening the door, I raise my hand up to my eyes to block the bright rays of sunshine. Once my eyes adjust, I walk forward. I smile as the sun’s rays heat my skin. The cabin my family and I live in is located on a large plot of 150 acres surrounded in forests. The only way to the property is an old dirt road. Next to the cabin is a shed that holds supplies for gardening and our bikes. Backing the bikes out of the shed we turn them towards the road. While I close the shed Sarina starts peddling away.
“Hey! You why are you leaving without me!” I shout as I jump on my bike and follow her. I catch up to her easily and she begins to giggle. I shake my head and chuckle as well.

Life Changes
Chapter 3: Responsible Adults
Summary: Dean gets a look at the way a responsible adult actually lives, and he really likes it. (Or maybe he just likes the responsible adult attached to the house he's looking at...)
Dean’s morning seemed to drag by, probably because he was looking forward to meeting with Castiel and checking out his potential new living situation. He’d let Benny, his lead technician, know that he might be a bit late coming back. He’d set the map on his phone for Castiel’s address, and Google had informed him that it was a four minute drive. Wouldn’t that be a nice change from his current half hour commute.
He pulled into the driveway at 12:04 exactly. The house was white with a dark grey foundation and trim. The walkway was shoveled, and everything looked well cared for. Dean climbed out of his car with his folder of check stubs and headed for the door. He knocked quietly before noticing the bell. Shit, do I ring the bell? Should I wait? What if he didn’t hear me knock. His thoughts were interrupted by the door opening.
Holy fucking hell. This guy, the guy he might be living with, was everything Dean had wet dreams about. His faded Led Zeppelin t-shirt stretched softly over his tone chest, highlighted his biceps. His hands, huge hands , cradled a steaming white mug with a bright yellow sun grinning from it. His dark jeans barely clung to his narrow hips, but they sure fit his muscled thighs well enough to make Dean drool. The face though, his face...perfect chiseled jaw, straight nose, fucking chapped looking red lips, all haloed by the most amazing sex hair he’d ever seen. But it was the eyes that held his attention. Intensely blue, hundreds of shades of blue , just staring at him.
Dean realized the guy was probably staring at him because he was fucking staring. Like a dumbass. He cleared his throat, and offered his free hand.
“Dean Winchester.” Smooth. At least his voice didn’t crack.
The man quirked his lip and shook the offered hand.
“Hello Dean. Castiel Novak. Nice to meet you. Come in.” He stepped back from the door to let Dean enter. He closed the door behind himself, and Cas gestured behind it. “You can take off your coat if you’d like.”
The entry was as orderly as the yard had seemed to be. A series of hooks hung behind the door, two covered by coats, with a shelf of totes above. Under it, stood a shoe rack, half filled with shoes, on a shallow drip tray which currently homed a pair of wet snow boots. Dean toed out of his shoes, glad that he’d opted for the steel toed shoes instead of his normal work boots this morning, and lined them up on the tray. He offered the folder he’d been holding out to the other man before taking his coat off and hanging it with the others. The folder found a home on the small side table, next to set of keys and a bowl of change. Another door, presumably to the garage, was just past the table.
“So, a tour? The main part of the house is pretty open.” Castiel gestured widely with his free hand.
“Sounds great. I love what I’m seeing so far.” It looked like all of the walls were the same soft blue-grey color with creamy white trim. It was practical, he supposed, for the big open space. It looked...peaceful.
Castiel stepped into the living room, and Dean noticed his bare feet sink into the plush carpet. There was a huge sectional, facing a gas fireplace with a widescreen TV mounted above it and floor to ceiling bookshelves on either side, both nearly full of books, movies, and photos, though again, everything looked well organized. An ottoman occupied the space in front of the couch, and two comfortable looking chairs formed the fourth corner. Overall, it looked like a great place to relax after work. Dean nodded.
“I don’t spend much time here, really, except on the weekends. By the time I get home from work, I’m ready for a shower and bed.”
“Yeah, I know the feeling. You said you have a funky schedule?”
“I work on the oncology ward at the hospital. The afternoon shift is 2- midnight.”
“Long days doing that kind of work.” Dean’s days were generally at least the same ten hours, but he didn’t have to deal with sick people. He’d been in hospitals enough to know that nurses worked hard, and often the work sucked.
Castiel shrugged. “Could be worse. A lot of hospitals run twelve hour shifts now, and I’ve got seniority, so I get the Monday-Thursday schedule. Always a three day weekend. It helps that I love my job.” He walked around the couch as he was talking, and Dean followed. “This is the dining room. I use it even less than the living room actually.” He bypassed the long dark wood table and chairs to move into the kitchen. “When I do actually sit down to eat, I usually eat at the island.”
The kitchen was gorgeous. Dean imagined it could be featured in one of those home-decorator magazines he kept in the lobby for his customers. There were miles of granite counter top over dark wood cabinets. A bank of upper cabinets was balanced on one end by the wide stainless steel refrigerator, and on the other by the professional looking stove and hood. A half-full coffee pot was set next to the refrigerator, but very little else cluttered the space.
“I cook a little, but cooking for one sucks. I want to get better at it though, it’s one of my resolutions.” Dean moved further into the kitchen.
“My cooking is generally limited to scrambled eggs, toast, cold sandwiches, and spaghetti with jarred sauce, so you’re probably ahead of me already.” He pulled open a narrow drawer on the island. “I’ve got menus for every delivery and takeout place in town though.” He grinned as he waved down at the collection. “I promise not to touch anything on your side of the refrigerator though. You don’t have to worry about me stealing your leftovers.”
“Noted. Definitely an improvement over my current roommate. I’m lucky if he leaves anything for me to eat, even though I do all of the grocery shopping.”
“Ahh, I had an ex like that. Always hungry, but never bothered to actually buy food.” He shook his head.
Dean just grunted in agreement, and they moved into the hallway.
“Unfortunately, there’s only one full bathroom.” He opened the first door on the left. “Fortunately, it is very well equipped.”
“No shit!” Dean had stepped into the huge room. “Sorry, it’s just, I’ve never seen a bathroom like this outside of a fancy hotel.” The shower was walled in pristine white subway tiles, the open side a wall of glass. Towel hooks were mounted to the front. He could count at least four shower heads, plus the rain fall head above. One of the two shelves in the shower was half full of bottles, but the other was empty.
“It’s probably my favorite room. Sometimes, after a particularly bad day, I like to take a soak before bed.” He gestured at the deep soaker tub.
“Oh my God, that sounds awesome.” After a day hunched over his desk doing paperwork, his entire back felt like one giant cramp.
Cas nodded, then gestured at the double sink. “This sink would be yours.” He indicated the one by the toilet. “It has a medicine cabinet behind the mirror.” He popped it open showing several empty shelves before closing it again. “I keep my towels and washcloths in the bottom drawer, and cleaning supplies under my sink, but you’re welcome to the rest of the space.
Dean smiled at the idea that he’d already been accepted. “Given our schedules, I doubt we’ll have much trouble balancing bathroom times. Sounds like I’m out the door before you’re up and you’re gone before I get home.”
“Yes. Should make it easy to keep from fighting over the shower.” He grinned over his shoulder as he stepped back into the hall.
“This is a guest bathroom,” he opened the first door on the opposite side of the hall revealing a toilet and small vanity, “So we really only have to share with overnight guests.” He opened the next door. “And this is the guest room. It’s a little small, but occasionally one of my siblings comes in for the weekend to visit. You’re welcome to use it for guests as well, if you’d like. Either way, it’s probably a good idea to put in on the house calendar so we don’t end up double booking.”
The guest bedroom, though Castiel had called it ‘small’ offered a queen bed, a wide dresser, and a double closet. It was pretty much what he’d imagined renting. Dean shrugged. “My family lives pretty close, so I don’t really have anybody who would need to spend the night. Unless, I become clinically insane and offer to have my nephews overnight, but I really don’t see that happening.”
“They’d be welcome on the weekend. How old are they?” He’d pulled the door closed again and moved further down the hall.
“Three and five. We’re celebrating full potty training and no accidents now. Very exciting.”
“Oh, that is!” His grin was something else, and Dean couldn’t help but smile back as he opened the door to the next room. “This is the den.” He stepped inside. It was clearly a converted bedroom, similar in size to the guest room, with the same closet. A desk sat on each wall, one with papers stacked on top, each with a plush rolling chair tucked under it. In the corner by the closet, there were two wide arm chairs and a coffee table. Castiel had moved to the closet and swung it open. “I actually have several nieces and nephews myself, so there’s a stash of stuff in here just in case.” Dean noted several labeled totes, ‘coloring,’ ‘blocks,’ and ‘vehicles’ caught his eye before the door was closed and Castiel was moving back to the desk. He tapped at a whiteboard mounted above it. “This is the house calendar. Basically, I just use it to organize bills, etc. But if we’re having guests, that’s probably a good thing to note as well. And I keep a running grocery list. I thought maybe we could take turns picking up the standard household things, toilet paper, coffee, etcetera, but if you prefer, we can do it a different way.”
“No, that sounds fine. I usually shop on Saturday, unless something comes up in the meantime, and I don’t mind picking up whatever.”
They wandered back into the hall and to the final two doors, both open. “These are the twin masters.” He walked into the room on the right, indicating for Dean to follow. “This one is mine. Sorry, I haven’t gotten to laundry.”
The room was huge, with an unmade made king sized bed, a pair of dressers, and again, what looked like a very large closet. The mentioned hamper was tucked into the corner by the dressers, and that and the mussed bedding were about the only thing he’d seen in the house that was disorderly. Still, it was the little sitting area that caught Dean’s attention. Again he felt like he’d stepped into a high end hotel. A wide chair with a matching ottoman was tucked into the corner, flanked by bookcases, and a small rolling table was positioned over one arm holding a laptop.
“Judgement free zone.” Dean lifted his hands. “Besides, I was kind of starting to wonder if you kept a maid or something. The whole place is spotless.”
“It’s not too hard, since I rarely have time to mess it, but I do look forward to splitting the chores.”
“Is that the only reason you’re looking for a roommate? I mean I dated a nurse once, and he made as much as me at least.” Dean blushed a little, well, that hadn’t really been how he’d meant to bring up the fact that he was bi, but now that it was out, he supposed it would be good to know how Castiel would react.
“Honestly, that’s definitely part of it. I bought this house a couple of years back, with the intention of starting a family. My partner at the time, didn’t have the same ideas, which I found out when I found him in the hot tub with his assistants. Plural. I love the house, I really do, but it it’s just so big for just me. It gets...lonely.”
Dean huffed out a breath. OK, so he was either gay or bi himself, one thing less to worry about, but that sounded like a really rough breakup. “Man, I’m sorry. That really sucks. My last real breakup was pretty amicable, but I’d gotten pretty close to her kid, so that sucked. Still, at least you got to keep the house, and it really is awesome. I wound up in a shitty third floor walkup.”
“So did Fergus.” Castiel chuckled and led Dean back to the door. “This place was always mine. At any rate, this one would be yours. It’s the same as mine, just opposite. I didn’t ask, do you have furniture?”
The room looked even bigger empty. “I have some, but seeing your room, I think I might get some new stuff. I can call it doing something for myself and tag it as part of my resolutions.” He grinned at the other man. His bedroom set was nice enough, and he loved his memory foam mattress, but the idea of upgrading to a king sized bed, of actually having all of his bedroom furniture match, it was definitely appealing.
Castiel grinned. “I donated everything that was here when Fergus moved out. It was cathartic. New furniture for my fresh start. I wouldn’t mind going with you, it can be a little tedious on your own.”
“I have a feeling I don’t want to get on your bad side. I might come home to find all my crap on the front lawn.”
Castiel laughed out loud. “Don’t fuck your barely legal assistants in the hot tub, and we should be fine.” He turned and started back down the hall.
“I’d have bigger problems than you to deal with if I did that. Benny, my lead technician, has been married for a long time, and his old lady can be downright scary in that Stepford wife kind of way. Charlie, my left-hand girl, is a gold-star lesbian, and I’m pretty sure she’d kill to protect her record.” He was teasing, but both were facts he didn’t want to ever test.
“One less thing to worry about then. Emptying the hot tub is a bitch.” He opened a door in the entryway that Dean hadn’t noticed before, and flipped on a light before heading down a flight of stairs.
The basement, at least the half that he could see from the bottom of the stairs, was finished, and as well maintained as the upstairs, if a lot more industrial looking. At the bottom of the stairs, the laundry area occupied a length of the wall, with a matching high-efficiency washer and dryer set, a deep wash sink between them, a long stainless steel counter for folding, a bar for hanging clothes, and wall mounted drying rack and ironing board.
“I usually do my laundry on Sunday afternoon, but I don’t mind negotiating that. I could probably do it Friday while you’re at work.”
Dean shook his head. “No worries. I like to do mine in the morning, usually Saturday, but sometimes I slack until Sunday. I can have it out of the way by noon, no problem.”
Castiel nodded and gestured to the rest of the room. “The basement is sound proofed, so you don’t have to worry about making noise down here while I’m sleeping.” The rest of the room was clearly used as a home gym. The floor was covered in thick rubber mats, and there was a treadmill, an elliptical, a weight bench with a rack of weights, and an exercise ball. The other half of the room was clear except for a small tote, though there was a TV mounted on the wall surrounded by several full length mirrors. “You’re welcome to use any of the equipment of course. I practice yoga, so there’s blocks and straps and stuff in the tote if you’re interested. Otherwise, there rest of the basement is mostly unfinished. It’s sealed, but that’s about it. You can use it for storage if you want. I have Christmas stuff stuck in there.” Cas shrugged. “I guess that’s about it. Hot tub is on the back deck, the yard is fenced in and completely private. Oh, the garage. You run an automotive shop, I’m sure you’re interested.”
“You say that like you aren’t.”
“Well, I enjoy not having to scrape the ice off of my windows.” It was said with a small smile. He led them back upstairs and to the other door in the entry.
“This is the door I usually use.” He pulled it open and stepped down into the garage. There was a blue SUV parked in the spot closest to the door, with the area in front of the other door empty. The garage was deeper than he’d expected, probably big enough to park two cars lengthwise, though the area in front of the SUV was occupied by a large work bench. “I don’t really use anything in here except the freezer.” He indicated an upright freezer near the door. “You can use the workbench if you want. Unfortunately, the snowblower died in the middle of that last big storm, so we’re stuck shoveling.”
“Or, you tell your mechanic housemate that the snow blower’s broken, and he fixes it.” He was grinning like a clown, he was sure, but the place was perfect, close to work, amazing space, great housemate and a heated garage . Seriously, could it get any better?
“So you like it?”
“Dude, it is perfect. I’m not convinced you’re not a serial killer it’s so nice and the rent is so affordable, but at this point, I think I might be willing to help you bury a body or two for a chance to live here.”
“Awesome. You’re the first person that’s answered the ad that I think I’d actually like to share a house with.” He glanced at his watch “I really need to get ready for work, but I can give you a copy of the lease to read over, and you can text me with questions. I can’t always answer right away, but I usually get a few minutes here or there. When were you looking to move in?”
“Honestly, unless you ask for my firstborn as deposit, I’ll put notice in tomorrow, so within the next two weeks if that’s OK?”
Cas was nodding. “Anytime. We can work out the details this weekend.” They’d moved back to the front door.
“Thanks so much for showing me this place, Castiel. This is exactly what I was hoping for.”
Cas glanced at the contents of the folder Dean had given him earlier, and added a sheaf of papers, and waited until he’d put his shoes and coat back on before handing it to him. “My friends call me Cas, and since I’m looking forward to sharing a house with you, I’m hoping you’ll fall into that category.” He offered Dean a hand to shake.
“Can’t wait Cas. I’ll shoot you a text if anything comes up with the lease, otherwise, I’ll plan on giving you a call Friday after work. Sound good?” He didn’t really want to leave, now that he was here, but he had to get back to work as well. He took the offered hand, and shook if firmly.
“Sounds good. Have a great afternoon Dean.” He moved to hold the door open.
“You too Cas.” He waved as he headed to his car.
He was actually looking forward to canceling the other appointments he’d made. No way could he get a better deal than this.
More Notes:
Three chapters in, and they finally meet. Can you actually imagine a meeting between these two that doesn't involve some kind of awe on Dean's part?
P.S. The description of Cas was very inspired by this magnificent piece of art (https://www.redbubble.com/people/jackiedeeart/works/35675771-sunshine?c=408643-supernatural). That's a redbubble link because I firmly believe everyone needs this in their house.
P.P.S Sorry about the gratuitous amounts of house description. I'm hoping it will help in the coming chapters to know your way around.

The Summer in Georgia
Chapter 13. Daryl’s House
Daryl lived about 12 miles from Rick. The road was heavily wooded on both sides, occasionally, they’d pass a house, but they were few and far between. The scenery was beautiful, Isabella thought. She had never seen trees like this. Her world was surrounded by sky scrapers, the only trees she saw were in the parks. She loved the country. She felt so free. Daryl slowed the truck as he came to a dirt circle driveway with a small frame house behind it. There was a small attached garage and there was a motorcycle parked in front of it. The house was ranch style. It had a screened in porch on the front and window flower boxes on all the front windows, but no flowers.
Daryl pulled into the driveway and parked.
“This is me.” He said, getting out of the truck.
“It’s so pretty.” Isabella said excitedly, as she jumped out the other side.
Daryl held the screen door for her as she walked up onto the porch. He unlocked the front door and let her walk in first. She walked into a big entryway with wood floors, there were hooks on the wall with jackets and coats hung on them. As she continued down the hallway there was double doors to her left, that led into a huge room with lots of boxes and some old furniture. She looked in.
“If ya’ gotta’ use the bathroom, use that one back there.” He said pointing to the back of the large room. “It’s clean. I use the front one up here and it ain’t no where a lady should be.” He said, pointing to another room just ahead at the end of the hallway.
That room was huge too. It was also full of boxes and furniture and a lot of mounted deer heads lying around on the floor. Off to the right inside that room was the front bathroom. Daryl took Isabella all the way into the bedroom. He led her to a big table toward the back of the room. There were a million photographs all over the table. Mostly of nature, but there were others of Rick, Charlie and the other guys down at the station. Against the inner wall of the room were storage cabinets and shelves filled with photography equipment and several cameras. At the very back of the room was another door that led into a small dark room. Isabella was surprised that Daryl was interested in photography. She was amazed at all the beautiful photographs, he really seemed to be able to capture the hidden beauty in things. She was very impressed and she, hoped that he would photograph her one day. The left the room and went back into the hallway.
As you rounded the corner at the end of the hallway there was a big kitchen on the front wall. Beside it was an empty room, that must have been the dining room. The sink, main counter and cupboards lined the front wall. There was an island stove in the middle of the kitchen and the refrigerator, other cupboards and counter were on the wall that separated the house and the garage. There were dirty dishes and takeout containers everywhere. A round table and 4 chairs sat on the other side of the island stove. On top was a laptop and some files. Straight ahead there was a doorway that led out to the garage. On the inside wall that faced the kitchen were several gun safes, several large knives and a crossbow hanging on a hook. Isabella figured he’d probably have weapons, he was a hunter and a country boy, but she never expected him to have so many.
On the back side of the house was the living room. As they walked from the kitchen area into the that room, off to the right there was a sliding glass door that led to a covered patio. This was set behind the garage. There were two sofas. One faced the back wall and windows and the other sat on the wall that bordered the bedroom with the deer heads. Next to the sliding glass door was a huge stone fireplace with a very large mounted deer head above it. Along the back wall sat a huge flat screened TV that stood on its own and in the corner, next to the sofa was a camouflage covered recliner. There was a glass coffee table and one end table that sat between the sofa and recliner. In front of the sofa was a makeshift bed. It looked like there was a thin mattress on the floor, covered with sheets, blankets and pillows. The living room was a mess, too. There were books and magazines all over the place. Dozens of beer bottles sat on the coffee table along with two or three ashtrays full of cigarette butts. There was no art or pictures on any of the walls and the carpet in the living room was filthy.
“It’s dirty. Sorry. I woulda’ cleaned a little if I knew I was bringin’ ya’ over today, but I didn’t.” Daryl said embarrassed.
“It just needs a little tlc and elbow grease, that’s all.” Isabella said, smiling and looking around. “I could clean it for you, if you want.” She offered.
“What? Nah. I’ll get around to it. I know it looks pretty bad, but it ain’t like I got people comin’ over all the time or nothin’.” He said.
“Well, I think it’s great. I can’t believe you built this with your own two hands. You must be so proud.” Isabella smiled. “Do you sleep here in the living room? You don’t have a bed?” She asked.
“I ain’t gotta’ bed. I just crash here on the floor.” He said, pointing to the pile of blankets on the floor. “I gotta’ lot of work to still do around here, but I ain’t in no hurry.”
“What’s out here?” Isabella said, looking out the sliding glass door.
“It’s a patio. Go on out and look, if ya’ want.” He said, pulling the door open.
She stepped outside on to a beautiful covered patio, with a couple of picnic tables and a porch swing on it. There was a huge grill near the door and lots of tools and auto parts lying around. At the end of the patio were steps that led down into a tree covered yard, where there were more tools and auto parts. The back of the house was all forest. Isabella turned and smiled at Daryl. Daryl lit up a cigarette and followed her around.
“You’ve got yourself a real piece of heaven, here. I love it. Do you ever have parties out here?” she asked, looking around the patio. “You could hang string lights along here.” She said, pointing to the rafters. “You could put a bar along this wall or just one of those galvanized water troughs filled with ice and drinks.”
“Never thought about that.” He replied, snuffing out his cigarette on one of the picnic tables.
She smiled and they walked back inside. He showed her the garage, which to her surprise was spotless and well organized. There were cupboards, tool carts, storage cabinets, a work bench, a freezer, another refrigerator a washer and dryer and in the middle of the garage was what looked like a half-built motorcycle. Everything was in its place. She was impressed. They walked back into the house and he closed the door behind them. He grabbed a set of keys off a hook on the wall, next to the door. He took one of the keys off the ring and handed it to Isabella.
“Here.” Daryl said.
“What’s this?” Isabella asked.
“It’s a key to my house in case ya’ ever need ta’ get in and I ain’t here. Ya’ can come over whenever ya’ want. It’ll be clean next time. I promise.” He said.
She smiled and took the key. “Thank you. I’d like to come and visit you sometimes. That would be fun.” She said, smiling up at him.
He smiled back and motioned for her to follow him. They walked into the big bedroom with the double doors. He led her to the back of the room where there was another doorway leading into another room. He pushed opened the door and let her walk past. It was the other bathroom. She was completely surprised. It was a beautiful bathroom with a separate bathtub and shower. The bathtub was a big old fashioned tub with feet. It had a high faucet that was set in the middle and it was deep and looked very comfortable. There was a pretty vanity and sink over in the corner with a window that overlooked the other side of the yard. This room was dusty, but in perfect condition. It was so different than the rest of the house.
“This room doesn’t look like it belongs with the rest of the house. It looks like a woman’s bathroom. Did you have a girlfriend when you built it?” she asked, dreading the answer.
“Nah, I built it for a woman though. I figured that I if I ended up sellin’ it, it could be a house for a family and shit. I thought a wife or somethin’ would like a bathroom like this. It would be like a sellin’ point, ya’ know whatta’ I mean?” He said proudly.
“That’s very good thinking, Daryl. It’s a beautiful bathroom. If I were a wife or something, I would most definitely want a room like this. You were smart.” She said, making him feel good. “What’s in these boxes?” she asked, walking back into the bedroom.
“Just a bunch a junk, I gotta’ go through and sort out. Most of it’ll probably end up in the trash. Just ain’t gotten around ta’ messin’ with it yet, that’s all.” He explained.
“If you need help, I’m always around.” She said, playfully.
He smiled at her and said, “I’ll keep that in mind.” They left the bedroom and walked back into the entryway. “Well, that’s it. Whatta’ ya’ wanna’ do now?” He asked.
Isabella shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know.”
“We could go back ta’ Rick’s and practice swimmin’, if ya’ want.” Daryl offered.
“I would like that a lot, but I don’t have a swimsuit.” She answered.
“What about Lori, she’s probably got one, right?” He asked.
She furrowed her brow a little and explained that you weren’t supposed to wear someone else’s bathing suits and things like that. Daryl didn’t know that, but it made sense to him, once he thought about it.
“Ya’ wanna’ go to the mall and get yerself a suit? They gotta’ lotta’ stores there. I’m sure you could find somethin’ ya’ like.” He assured her.
“I only have $85.00 left. My brother made me pay for my train ticket down here out of my $200.00, but I guess I could find one that I can afford. What do you think?” she asked him.
“I think yer brother’s a dick, but yeah, I’m sure ya’ can find somethin’. They got all kinds a stores in there. Come on rabbit, let’s go.” He said, pushing her playfully towards the door. She giggled and let him steer her out onto the front porch. He turned and locked the door and they headed to the truck.
“I gotta’ get somethin’ to swim in too. I ain’t got no suit, either. I usually just swim in my drawers or… butt naked.” He laughed. They climbed into the truck and headed to the mall. “We’ll stop for lunch afterwards, ok. I gotta’ great little diner I go ta’ on Sundays. Ya’ ever eat chicken fried steak?” he asked her as they drove down the road.
“No. Is that veal?” She asked, concerned. “Because I don’t want to eat tortured baby cow.”
“Nah, it’s just a tenderized piece of beef. It’s good, you’ll like it. I ain’t gonna’ make ya’ eat no tortured baby cow.” He said laughing at her. She laughed and punched him in the arm. A tenderized piece of beef, why not? She’d try anything once. Anything but tortured baby cow.

No one actually wanted to see the Invenomator, but everyone had to eventually. It was important, Satha’s father had explained, to keep people from getting sick or dying from accidental bites. The giant spiders they kept as pets and as mounts usually behaved themselves, but there was always a chance one would startle and bite on reflex.
Satha had tried to talk her way out of it. If she was very, very careful and never got bitten, she wouldn’t need the Invenomator, right? Her father had been unmoved. Wasn’t Satha always trying to pet every spider she saw? Sooner or later, she was bound to meet one with a bad temper. Did she want to spend her whole life afraid of being bitten, unable to keep a spider of her own?
…No.
And so, she found herself bustled off along the spidersilk walkways that wound above the soupy swamp floor. Her father had taken her down to play in the mud once. They’d left after only a few minutes because the thrashergators had gotten too close. That had been the only time Satha had set foot off the town’s wood-and-silk structures.
The Invenomator’s hut was at the center of town. It was, for the most part, a building like any other with a mossy wooden roof and wood-framed walls filled in with dense spider silk. What set it apart was the symbol painted on the wooden sign hanging out front and on the door itself. It resembled a pair of fangs curved toward each other, one pointing down, the other pointing up, both painted in stark white.
Satha knew it was an important symbol, but she did not find it a comforting one.
“Come on, now.”
Her father opened the door and led her inside. Although he spoke calmly as ever, the hand holding hers felt tense. This was not comforting either.
Satha was not the first of her friends to see the Invenomator. Most of them had been fine and even bragged about how they hadn’t cried, but one boy had gotten sick and stayed inside for days before he could play again. Satha did not want to get sick. But she did like the idea of being able to tell the others how brave she was. So, she let her father lead her inside without a struggle.
Unlike the outside of the hut, the inside was entirely strange. Shelves crowded the walls, each cluttered with jars and bottles, filled with unknown liquids and objects. Satha wanted to touch them, open them, play with them, but stopped at the sight of the strangest thing in the room: the Invenomator himself.
He wore dark, weighty robes and thick, black gloves that gave him an ominous appearance. Most arresting of all was the mask - chitinous and bone-white - obscuring his face. Satha could not recognize the one behind it as anything human.
Yet when he spoke, the voice was that of a gentle old man, like a grandfather or an elderly teacher.
“Is that Stott I see? And without a basket of spiderlings on your back? Ahh, and who do we have here?”
“This is Satha.” Her father, Stott, tugged her forward. “She’s here for her first inoculation. I left the spiderlings back at the stable.”
A sound emanated from the next room, like a voice, but wordless and creaking. It was not a happy sound.
“Busy with someone else?” Stott asked.
“Hmm? Oh, him. No, no. He’s fine, he’s fine. My assistant is seeing to him.”
“Is he sick?” Satha dared ask.
“No, not sick. He suffered a bite from a small armored centipede. Very unpleasant, very unpleasant.”
“It wasn’t in town, was it?” Stott asked, frowning.
“No, no. Out in the Margins. On a turnip farm, I believe.”
“Huh.” Stott’s frown didn’t abate. “That’s closer than usual.”
Satha did not like the idea of armored centipedes being close at all. But as long as they weren’t in town, it wasn’t too bad, right?
“Indeed, indeed. I’ve filed a report with the scouts to deal with it. Now then…”
The Invenomator crouched smoothly in front of her, like a dark cloud compacting itself down to the ground.
“How old are you?”
“Five,” Satha answered, uneasy in the face of that strange mask.
“Hmm, a good age. Let’s see then…”
Without warning, he lifted her in the air. Satha squirmed, but stopped when the gloved hands tossed her lightly upward.
“One muck melon,” the Invenomator counted as he caught her. He lofted her again.
“Two muck melons.”
Satha’s mouth twitched at the feeling of weightlessness, delighted in spite of herself.
“Three muck melons.”
She giggled.
“Four muck melons,” the Invenomator concluded with a final catch. “Yes, a good size, a good size.”
He swayed her back and forth, drawing out an extra giggle before setting her down. Slightly giddy, Satha watched as the Invenomator turned to a small fireplace. A pot sat beside it, and the Invenomator ladled some of its contents into a little wooden cup before returning.
“Are there any peculiarities in her health?” he asked her father.
“No, none,” Stott answered. “She had that fever that was going around last year, the one with the rash. But she bounced back after a couple weeks and hasn’t had anything serious since.”
“Good, good.” The Invenomator handed Satha the cup. “I do hope you like honey. My assistant drowned this batch, and I couldn’t possibly drink it all myself.”
Satha did like honey. But when she sniffed the drink in her hands, it had an odd undercurrent to its scent that wrinkled her nose.
“It’s medicine,” her father explained. “It’ll help you handle the inoculation.”
Medicine, in Satha’s experience, usually tasted bad, but the strong honey smell overpowered everything else. The first sip was sweet with an odd, astringent aftertaste. But the oddness of it couldn’t compare to the sweetness, and she drank the rest down eagerly.
“All done, then? Good, good. Have your father set you on that table there.”
The Invenomator fetched a small tray carrying a single, sharp, curved stinger with a small pouch attached at the back.
Satha’s anxiety, which had waned after being tossed in the air and given sweets, returned in full force.
“It might be easier not to look,” her father suggested.
Satha squeezed her eyes shut and pulled her limbs in rigidly.
“Did you know there’s a spider in this room?” the Invenomator asked conversationally.
…Satha did not know there was a spider in this room.
“What kind?”
“Oh, I doubt she’s any kind you’ve seen before. Do you think you can spot her? She likes to hide in dark places, very dark places.”
Satha opened her eyes and looked around the cluttered room. When she’d first arrived, she’d been distracted by all the curious objects on the shelves, but now that she knew to look, she quickly spotted a spider even bigger than herself tucked beneath a low table in the corner.
The spider was a dull grey color, staring out with eight dark, forward-facing eyes. Her legs stretched out in front of her as she held herself low and still, observing, but making no attempt to interact with the humans in the room.
“Is that her?” Satha pointed at the spider as the Invenomator swabbed her shoulder with some sharp-smelling liquid. “Can I pet her?”
All of the big spiders Satha had met had been domesticated, and most of them were friendly enough for petting, at least under supervision. This one looked different from the others, which just made Satha want to pet her more.
“I’m afraid she’s not very friendly,” the Invenomator said. “Do you know what kind of spider she is?”
Satha felt a sharp prick in her shoulder and squirmed. Her father held her hand, both a comfort and a reminder not to retreat.
“No,” Satha said, her voice only a little shaky. “What kind is she?” Even if she couldn’t pet the new spider, maybe she’d be allowed to get closer if she was good.
“She is a Giant Woodtrap Spider. They like to hide, to hide in hollowed-out trees and pounce on prey as it wanders by. As you can see, she doesn’t move very much.”
“Woodtrap Spiders are wild,” her father added. “They’ve never been domesticated, so I wouldn’t expect one to be friendly.”
“Why’s she in your house if she’s not dum-sticated?”
The Invenomator chuckled.
“Scouts need inoculations against the venoms of wild spiders as well as ‘dum-sticated’ ones. Catching wild spiders for their venom is, as you can imagine, rather unpleasant for all involved. Since a Giant Woodtrap Spider is happy in any dark corner, I may as well keep one in a dark corner of my office.”
“Daddy, can I have a Giant Woodsap Spider?”
“Woodtrap Spider. And I don’t think your first inoculation covers those. Besides, don’t you want a spider you can pet?”
Satha did want a spider she could pet.
“Are there any dum-sticated Woodsap… Wood… Woodtrap Spiders?”
“Hmm… I don’t believe there are,” the Invenomator mused, setting the empty stinger back on the tray. He produced a small roll of gauze from a pocket in his robes.
“There wouldn’t be much point,” her father explained. “They don’t make much silk, and even when they get big enough to ride, they don’t like to go anywhere. They’re not very sociable either, so they wouldn’t make good house pets. What would you do with a spider that just hid in a corner all day and night?”
Satha thought for a moment.
“Guard spider? She could live under the porch and eat any bad guys that tried to come in.”
The Invenomator chuckled as he finished wrapping her shoulder.
“’Bad guys’, you say?”
“We had a talk about strangers last week,” Stott explained.
“Well, there are people - just some people - who live out in the swamp and keep Giant Woodtrap Spiders under their houses,” the Invenomator mused. “But that’s so they’ll eat any armored centipedes that come by. I wouldn’t say those spiders are dum-sticated, though, just… repurposed.”
“Woodsap Spiders eat centipedes?” Satha asked in awe. Even her father had said he wouldn’t want to meet an armored centipede. They were one of the reasons why people who went out into the swamp didn’t always come back.
“Yes,” the Invenomator said. “Little ones, mostly little ones. A fully grown armored centipede would still pose a challenge. And, ah, speaking of ‘challenges’, you are all done with your first inoculation. You and your father should wait a bit to make sure your health doesn’t turn, then you’ll be free to go home.”
“It’s really all done?” Satha looked at the bandage on her arm.
“Indeed.”
A small crash, like a dish breaking, came from the next room.
“Hmm, that may require my attention. I’ll be a moment, just a moment. Do shout if you need assistance.”
“How’re you feeling, kiddo?” her father asked, leaning against the table next to her.
“I’m fine.” She glanced at the doorway where the Invenomator had disappeared. “The turnip man should have got a Woodsap Spider.”
“Turnip farmer. And he may well do that now.”
“Is the turnip farmer man gonna be alright?”
“He’ll be fine,” Stott said. “The Invenomator wouldn’t have seen us if he’d had someone dying in the back room. Armored centipede venom just hurts a lot.”
“Is there a ‘noc-lation for that one?”
“Yeah, but it’s a lot less pleasant than the common inoculations and harder to get the ingredients besides. People don’t usually get that one unless they expect to spend a lot of time out in the wilds, like the scouts.”
“Did Mom have that one?” Mom had been a scout, Satha knew.
Stott was quiet for a moment.
“She did.”
“But the centipede got her anyway.”
“…Yeah.”
Satha knew her mother mostly as a hazy shape - a memory, an impression, and an absence. Her father rarely talked about her.
“Did her ‘noc-lation not work?”
“It worked,” Stott said. “But the venom’s not the only thing that’ll get you.”
He paused and looked off into the distance, expression tight.
“The swamp eats people,” he said slowly. “The Invenomator can’t keep it from getting everyone, but he makes sure it doesn’t get quite so many. Inoculations give our scouts a better chance against the things out there. It just… isn’t always enough.”
He cleared his throat.
“But as for you, that first dose should be enough for most spiders you’ll find in town. In a couple weeks, once it’s fully kicked in, how about we go look at that egg sack Ms. Fenna’s House Jumper made in her living room? It should be hatching by then. I bet she’ll be up to her knees in spiderlings and happy to hand one off to you.”
Satha knew she was being distracted, but spiderlings were very distracting.
“I can have one for sure?”
“For sure. What do you think? You want one that’s bouncing off the walls, or one that’ll sit nicely in your lap and let you pet it?”
Successfully diverted, Satha spent the next few minutes detailing what she wanted her first House Jumper to be like. Obviously, it should be bouncy enough to be fun to play with, but still let her pet it sometimes. Ms. Fenna’s spider did a funny thing where it raised its forelegs in the air and waved at you to say ‘hi’, so Satha wanted hers to do that, too.
“You’ll have to train it for that,” her father said, “but that’s an easy trick to teach.”
Part-way through his explanation on basic spider training, the Invenomator returned.
“How’s he doing?” Stott asked.
“Oh fine, fine. Just knocked a cup off the bedside table. Spasms are normal with centipede venom. He should be past the point of danger, but one must make sure. No trouble with our Satha, is there?”
Satha shook her head. She felt about the same as ever, save for a slight soreness in her arm.
“Good, good. I think it’s safe for you to have a small treat at this point.”
Satha perked up as the Invenomator’s darkly-gloved hand offered her a piece of golden honey candy twisted around the end of a stick. She immediately took it and shoved it in her mouth.
“Satha, what do you say?” her father prompted.
“Fank ooh!” she said, unwilling to take the sweet out of her mouth for even a moment.
“Now, I know you’ve had this inoculation yourself,” the Invenomator said, addressing Stott, “but the side-effects are worth repeating. Redness and swelling at the injection site is normal, but you should bring her back if she develops a rash. A headache, tiredness, and a little digestive upset are common, nothing worrisome. If she starts to have tremors, becomes confused, or can’t catch her breath, you should bring her back right away.”
The Invenomator noticed Satha staring and added, “Of course, these more unpleasant reactions are rare, very rare.”
The words, though concerning, were spoken in the same calm, steady voice that the Invenomator always used, so Satha wasn’t too worried.
“I know some kids get a kind of false fever afterward. Should I give her something for that?”
“The usual herbs for fever are fine just to make her comfortable. I’ll give you something mild for her. You know the proper dosing for children, yes?”
Satha’s attention trailed off as the adults got into the specifics of remedies for various discomforts, none of which she felt at the moment. The inoculation hadn’t been too bad after all, so she probably wouldn’t get sick.
Her gaze drifted and naturally settled again on the Giant Woodtrap Spider. It stared out from beneath the table, still motionless. Would it stay motionless long enough for petting?
Her father had said it wasn’t a good petting spider, but if it just stayed like that all the time and never moved, it should be fine, right?
Glancing at the two distracted adults, she carefully slid off the table and edged toward the spider. It was smaller than the riding spiders she’d met, but bigger than the lap spiders. Its eyes, wild and empty, were unlike either of them. There was something alien about them she found intriguing.
“Nope!”
Before she could take another step, Stott grabbed the back of her shirt and hauled her away, almost making her drop her honey candy.
“Satha, what have I said about petting spiders you don’t know?”
He sounded more upset than she thought was necessary.
“But she’s not moving at all!” Satha protested. “It’s fine if she just holds still, right?”
The Invenomator moved forward, so smoothly he flowed more than walked, and placed himself between her and the spider.
“Giant Woodtrap Spiders hold very still… until they don’t. It’s how they hunt, still as a stone until they leap out faster than you can see. This one’s fed often enough she may not be hungry, but then, you are rather close to prey size.”
“…Oh.”
She’d forgotten that wild spiders would eat people. She’d heard it somewhere, but it had seemed too odd to be true when all the spiders she knew were so friendly.
Her father sighed.
“Can’t take my eyes off you for a minute.”
“It should be fine for you to go home now,” the Invenomator said. “She’s lively enough that I’m not worried. Of course, if that changes, you can bring her right back. Day or night, someone will be here.”
“Thanks,” Stott said, relieved. “Alright, Satha, say goodbye.”
“Bye, Mister Venomator,” she said, offering her best attempt at his title. “Bye, Miss Woodsap Spider.”
She peered around the Invenomator’s form to get a last look, and the spider stared back at her with the same empty focus as before. Satha didn’t know if the spider would have tried to eat her, but she liked spiders well enough to give this one the benefit of the doubt.
Then she remembered there was someone else she’d missed.
“Bye, Mister Turnip Farmer Man!” she shouted. “Feel better soon!”
She was pretty sure she heard a muffled “bye” croaked through the door.
The Invenomator chuckled.
“Goodbye. I will see you for your next inoculation and, with luck, no sooner.”

Modern English Country Home Design
Happy new week, my friends! How wonderful it is to start a brand new week with you all! The weather is starting to get quite cold here and the colder it gets out there, the more Christmassy it becomes. We’re supposed to get some snow this week and I am planning on starting my Christmas decor soon. Have you guys started to decorate your home yet?
Isn’t this the best time of the year? I feel extra happy about everything and having a new home by Pike Properties (previously featured here, here & here – make sure to check these house tours!) certainly makes my heart sing!
Here, the builder share some insights on this new-construction:
“Working with an award winning home design firm, this home was conceptualized and planned out with the utmost in attention to detail. Unique architectural elements abound, with the most prominent being the curved window set with extended roof overhang that looks a bit like a watch tower. Painting that feature a dark color, ensured that it remained noticeable without overtaking the front facade. Extensive cedar was used to add a bit of rustic charm to the home, and warm up the exterior. All cedar is stained in Benjamin Moore Hidden Valley. If you look at each side of the highest gable, you will see two cedar beams flaring out. This was such a small detail, but well worth the cost for a crane and many men to lift and secure them in place at 30 feet in height. Many have asked the guys at Pike what the style of this home is, and neither them nor the architects have a set answer. Pike Properties feels it blends many architectural styles into one unique home. If we had to call it something though, it would be Modern English Country.”
Make sure to pin, save and share this beautiful home.
Modern English Country Home Design
Main Body Paint Color – Benjamin Moore Olympic Mountains.
Dark Accent Paint- Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal.
Shingles- CertainTeed Landmark Pewter.
Porte-Cochère
“This home measures around 100 feet in depth, and that allowed for the most unique feature, a Porte-Cochère that leads to a motor court. Porte-Cochère’s originated in the late 18th and early 19th century in luxury private mansions and public buildings, to allow horse carriages to drop off passengers in all weather conditions, without passengers being exposed to the elements. Today, many luxury private residences, and still many public buildings, have them.”
Gas Lantern- St. James lighting Montrose Large – Others: here, here & here.
Cedar
The porch is covered in bluestone which is a great material for a clean, simplistic look. The builder was able to vault part of the porch to make it feel grand. V-Groove was chosen for the ceiling trim, as it is stylish and durable. Cedar is stained in Benjamin Moore Hidden Valley.
Porch Chairs: here – similar.
Entryway
The builder incorporate windows on the side wall of this foyer so it wouldn’t feel dark and closed in. The windows overlook the Porte Cochère where guests may very well have parked their car. If you look closely at the ceiling, there is some intricate trim detail that forms four large quadrants with a central diamond.
The paint color through all main living areas of the home, hallways, closets, mudroom, and laundry room is Benjamin Moore Dove Wing with Benjamin Moore White Dove trim.

Kitchen
The kitchen of this home was a labor of love. At the heart of it is the 10 foot wide by 4 foot deep White Oak island with plentiful room for 4 people to sit comfortably.
A cabinet front Thermador fridge can be found at the far right of this picture.
Counterstools: Arteriors – Other Great Counterstools: here, here, here, here, here, here & here.
Kitchen Lighting
The builder chose to hang three pendants over the island. Pendants are Hudson Valley Lighting Latham – similar here.
Kitchen Faucet
This Brizo Litze bridge faucet gives continuity with the black and gold color scheme.
Range
Placing the range in front of a window was a unique and very nice setup, however that meant that there is no way to have a traditional range hood like most people are used to seeing. The solution is a flush mount range hood.
Island Range Hood with Wireless Remote Control: Zephyr Lux.
Range: 48″ Thermador Pro Grand Dual Fuel Range.
Tying the whole kitchen together is the mosaic backslash tile. The tile is visually stunning and brought all the color tones of the space into harmony. The mosaic tile is Soho Studio Empress Helena – Other Luxurious Backsplash Tiles: Here, Here, Here, Here, Here, Here, Here, Here & Here.
Kitchen Sconces: Hudson Valley Lighting Garden City.
Pull-out Utensil Pantry
Working with a custom cabinet maker allowed the builder to add neat features like this utensil drawer next to the range. It offers a perfect spot for cooking utensils and knife storage with material to keep knives sharpened.
New Kitchen Ideas
“Another neat element of the custom cabinets are the fact that tucked away inside their own cubbies are two built in White Oak cutting boards and two built-in White Oak serving trays. When stowed away, the pop of wood again the gray cabinets looks amazing.”
Kitchen Cabinetry
The builder chose gray as the cabinet color, specifically Benjamin Moore OC-52 Gray Owl. They wanted a color that wasn’t too bold and would take away from the other elements of the space. Gray cabinets are in trend right now and for good reason. The cabinetry was custom crafted in Charlotte and is all beaded inset.
Cabinet Hardware: Schaub and Company Menlo Park in Satin Brass Pulls & Knobs. Cup Pulls are Nostalgic Warehouse Farmhouse Cup Pulls in Satin Brass.
Dining Room
Painted in Benjamin Moore Dove Wing, this dining room also features wainscoting and X-beam ceiling with V-groove inlay.

Scullery
This pantry is adjacent to the kitchen through a cased opening, and functions as a perfect spot for additional storage, wine storage, a coffee station, and much more. The builder added a large wall of open bookcase style shelving to cover one wall and it can be used to store fine china, bar ware, cookbooks, etc. Cabinet color is Benjamin Moore Soot.
Wine Fridge: Thermador Freedom.
Hardware: Pulls, Knobs & Farmhouse Cup Pulls.
Bar
The wine rack is custom made out of White Oak by the cabinet maker who constructed all the cabinetry, and boasts an enamel center with LED backlighting. With the flip of a switch, the wine rack comes to life.
Beautiful Wine Racks: here, here, here & here.
Faucet: Delta Trinsic Pull Out Spray in Matte Black (Often recommended by builders and designers).
Living Room
The afternoon sunshine pours into this living room and creates the perfect spot to sit and relax. The fireplace was kept simple and clean with a cast stone mantle and black granite hearth. The tray ceiling adds the perfect level of volume to the space, and flush mounted cedar beams add warmth and texture.
Lighting: Hudson Valley Lighting Durham in Aged Brass – Large.
Floor Lamp: here.
Mirror: here.
Windows & Floors
Windows and natural light abound. The 4 panel French door set leads outside to a screened terrace.
Hardwood Flooring: The same flooring you see here spans throughout most of the home. It is 4 1/4″ White Oak finished off in an Eco-Friendly product called Rubio Monocoat. It is a finish that is eco-friendly and durable. The best part about it is that if any spot is damaged or needs to be touched up, you only need to touch the one spot, and don’t have to refinish all the floors on that level as with traditional poly stain. This finish is their Oyster color.
Similar Hardwood Flooring: here & here.

Home Office
Here is the inside of the curved window set we saw out front. This is an inspiring home office space meant to help the homeowner be as productive as possible.
Pendant: Arteriors Swami.
Master Bedroom
In the master bedroom, the vaulted ceiling provides airiness, but due to it’s relatively low slope, it maintains warmth to the space. V-groove painted in Benjamin Moore White Dove covers the ceiling and blends almost seamlessly with the walls. 4 Years On - Our Home Reno Update
I can't believe we've been living in this house for four years already! It seems absolute madness and in many ways makes me realise how far we haven't come within our home renovating journey. I mean, four years and we're barely halfway through?! But I guess that's the reality of DIY renovating and renovating on a serious budget. Tough life, eh?
Despite being far from finished, over the last 12 months, a lot has happened. We've finished the kitchen entirely (well, 95% finished - but that counts as finished right?!), we've finished the dining room entirely (well, 95% again) and we've made tons of progress in both the conservatory and the living room. Not to mention the garden has changed quite a bit too. So, that's five different areas of the house in 12 months - not bad! And, I think this is the first year the house is actually beginning to feel and look like a home.
So, this post is basically going to be a kind of 'up-to-date house tour' showcasing where we're currently at in our home reno journey. I do this post every year, so if you want to see how our journey has unfolded year on year, you can check out each of these posts for the last four years right here:
Moving Day Tour
Year 1 Update
Year 2 Update
Year 3 Update (Last Year)
So let's start at the beginning, shall we? I'll walk you through the house, in the order of the rooms, you would meet. I haven't styled any of the rooms for this shoot, what you see is what you get (sorry!) and it was on a bit of a dark day (mistake!).
The Hallway
This room is unchanged as ever! Actually, we anticipate this will be the last room we possibly ever tackle, so it's barely changed in four years and I don't see it changing much any time soon. But I mean, it's not that bad, right? *said through gritted teeth*
The Living Room
This room has gone through quite the transformation this year. I've sanded floorboards, stripped wallpaper, repaired the ceiling (ish) and bought a whole new secondhand sofa. Let's just say this room is probably the most changed room over the last 12 months. We've taken a break from it for the summer, but we hope to finish it later in the year! If you want to see all the progress made so far, you can find all my living room posts here.
The Kitchen/Diner
Last year at this time, we only had half a kitchen. We still didn't have a working sink, a proper tap, or a worktop along the right-hand side of the kitchen. We basically had run out of cash and had to wait to save for the last missing piece. A whole year on, it's DONE. OK, the hanging lights are still out of place and we still don't have shelves - but other than that, it's done. And it feels good! You can see the full kitchen tour here.
The dining room is also finished, albeit with a plug and light switch still hanging out the wall. But it's done, it's furnished (although I desperately want to build a new table) and it's a room that's finally nice to be in. For three years, this was just a space we walked through; it lacked purpose and we never had somewhere to sit when we ate. Oh, how life has changed in the last 12 months! I've almost forgotten those days... almost.
Conservatory
Well this room has also undergone quite the transformation! Last year I painted the floor on a whim since we had zero budget and I felt like we needed to up the pace of renovating a bit. It's definitely added a punch of character and it's held up pretty well for the most part too. The only issue we've had with the painted floor was during the change from colder to warmer weather, which has lifted up some paint near the air vent - but luckily you can't see much of that. More recently, I've built the pallet seating in here too, which I had been planning for YEARS! And my vision of a garden room conservatory with plants galore is finally taking shape. There's still much to do in here, but I'm really pleased so far.
The Basement
The secret room I very rarely talk about! I am so desperate to get my paws working down here. But, it's going to be expensive and we currently have no money. We have ventilation issues we need to sort out, and I don't want to rush into anything and make the wrong decision. So far, I haven't researched enough to begin work down here - so it basically looks exactly the same. Well, aside from the stack of pallets mounting up. I'd like to start sooner than later with work down here, but we'll see...
The Landing
Another room that totally hasn't changed. We even still have stuff in moving boxes from 4 YEARS AGO. Seriously when does it end?
Bathroom
This was the first room we ever tackled and it doesn't look too different now. I'd love to update this room a little because we never quite got round to the 'finishing touches' stage and it feels a little empty and unloved at times. I'm also not digging the cream walls and we STILL have skirting boards missing in places and a cupboard without a door. But, meh. We have a place to shower and pee, that's what counts right?
Smallest Bedroom/Office
We use this room as an office, although it doesn't actually see that much use. It hasn't changed at all this year really. Again, I'd love to furnish it better - but there's never the money for that. The negatives of forever renovating eh?!
Master Bedroom
Four years on, and this room is another one that's completely the same! From the curtains to the floor, we're still rocking dear old Edna's retro style. Will it be on the to-do list for next year? I kinda hope so. It would be nice to one day not wake up amongst this dark mess!
Attic
At the start of this year, we got rid of SO much rubbish from up here. Stuff we'd been keeping *just in case* - but we had kept it long enough, it needed to go. We burnt a load of wood in the wood burner and took a load more to the recycling centre. It still doesn't look tidy or empty, but it's a great deal better than what it was. This room isn't a high priority on our list, although it definitely need attention sooner than later.
Garden
I've been tackling the garden since day one of moving in! It looks SO much different to how it looked when we moved in and it even looks different from how it did 12 months ago. We've added decking, gravel, fencing and the rubble is almost gone. 4 years of work out here is beginning to pay off. We're not finished yet, but the end is certainly in sight. And we're hoping to have this area ticked off the to-do list by the end of next summer!
So that's the house in 2018, and our four-year houseiverasy update. Yes, I wish we had achieved more - but that's probably always going to be the case. And I think this year has been quite a good one, so I feel good about that. Here's to another year of hard work, ha!
Anyone else on the same long renovation journey out there?! Please come forward and make me feel better ;)

Dueling DIY: Installations and Seeing the Finish Line
My friend Charlotte and I are in a DIY battle to renovate our guest bedrooms. Catch the entire series here.
Hey hey, friends! Sorry about the delay — I know you expected this post yesterday. It’s been one of those “technology sometimes sucks” sorts of weeks, so I’m just going to jump right in and not dwell any further on crappy internet-related problems. It’s time for a Dueling DIY: Guest Room Gauntlet update, and vlog #3!
If you need a recap, start here and check out the updates here and here. I created the Dueling DIY series because it gives me the motivation I need to stay focused on a house project that I might otherwise shove further down the to-do list (send to project limbo, basically). By challenging another blogger and committing to these bi-weekly updates (along with a vlog recap each month), I get a lot more done. The smack talk is also a lot of fun — especially when I get to make my challenger cry. This time around, I’m challenging Charlotte from At Charlotte’s House, who is also redoing a closet she’s saying is a guest room and pretending her projects are as badass as mine.
Dueling DIY: Guest Room Gauntlet
The biggest news first, shall we?
The Murphy bed
THE MURPHY BED IS INSTALLED!
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been working almost nightly to get the bed completely built and install all the hardware.
I had to iron on the edge banding and trim it all down so that the unit is ready for paint (delaying all of that painting until more of the built-ins are completed; it’s a lot of painting).
Sidenote: I had to convince myself to buy this little edge trimmer tool. It was over $10, which just seemed like a needless splurge. But it saved me so much time! I went from “this is a huge waste of money” to “this thing is so handy” in one use. I’ve used edge banding on a few projects before, so I’m certain I’ll use it enough again to make it a worthwhile investment.
Sidenote to the sidenote: I totally loved the sound. Some people hate it like nails on a chalkboard, though. Just a fair warning!
Installation
When I say “installed,” I mean that the mattress is in place and the whole unit is bolted into the wall. The good news: all of the hard parts are DONE! The bad news: the springs are so tight that the whole thing almost squashed me!
The unit is made with a hardware kit, which includes installing a piston lift system to help keep the bed closed and allow the unit to spring back into place when not in use. But that same hardware is meant to be counter-balanced by a heavy mattress on the inside (skip the box spring, FYI). So when you’re installing, trying to keep the thing open is tough, since the unit is designed to be front- and top-heavy and wants to fall over (aka, prime squashing territory). It’s definitely a situation where I needed a helper, so I’m glad I wasn’t cocky enough to install it until K was home from work.
Together, we got the top header bolted to the studs (VERY important to secure this part, so we went with bolts instead of screws to make it more secure) and there it was: my new Murphy bed, installed!
Of course, there’s still more left to do: install some handles (notice how there isn’t a way to open the darn thing?? yeah… gotta fix that) and start building the cabinetry and shelving that will flank the sides of the bed and give the entire wall a clever, built-in look.
Since we went with the biggest news first, all the other little updates seem a little less impressive to me. So I’ll recap them all really quickly:
In case you missed it, there are new hanging planters along the window. Click here for that tutorial.
I sealed one of the paintings along the new picture ledges with art resin — such a cool project! You can find that recap and tutorial here.
Speaking of the picture ledges, I built a total of 4 but only wound up using 3. I took the 4th and placed it under the TV for a convenient way to store remotes. Now guests won’t have to wonder where they are.
And speaking of the window, I noticed that the conduit I’m using for the curtain rod is just shy of fitting properly into the DIY brackets I made. I want to add some decorative knobs (finials?) to each end, so that means extending the pole just a few inches. I’ll have a tutorial on this soon, but here’s a hint if you’ve ever wondered about gluing metal and wood:
Next plans
Having the Murphy bed mounted to the wall makes it very obvious that there is so much floor space in the room. That means a new focus on trying to optimize this space for all of the other possible uses: a secondary office for K (which means we’re on the hunt for a good dresser to turn into a desk), entertaining space (the speakers have to go somewhere, maybe add seating, etc.). It should make for an exciting next month for this series! I see the finish line in sight.
Vlog #3!
Don’t forget to head over to Charlotte’s blog to check out her progress as well. She says she’s almost finished with her room, but then again, she already said she was going to be finished by this update. So if you leave her a comment, make sure she knows that you know she’s a liar. And again, don’t let her fool you with those pillows and tchotchkes: she’s not done with her bed yet either, and that’s an attempt to hide her secret shame.
P.S. I can’t WAIT to make more progress on this built-in install!
