➳ notes: i don’t know where i got this idea from, it popped into my head and i looked at the list of characters i write for and thought that this worked the best for the free! cast. also, i can’t imagine any of them NOT crying?? maybe to varying degrees, but they’d all shed a tear or a thousand

he almost got teary just seeing you for the first time

but he managed for the ceremony

as for in between the ceremony and reception?

don’t worry about it :))

but it’s a happy sob

he’s definitely yelling to himself how happy he is about marrying you

and as private as he wanted this moment to be, everyone CAN hear him

he is a very loud man

everyone doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing

but one can assume he’s jumping up and down like a kid

he didn’t imagine this would ever happen

so this still feels kinda like a dream

only until the wedding finished

the rest of that sentence was a blur because he just dove in to kiss you

probably cried about the wedding for the rest of the week

so his wedding day will be a moment and a half

after the vows and everything he was fine though

that night when you went to bed he wasn’t

ikuya is an emotionally troubled man

and it fucking shows

he’s literally never felt like crying more

natsuya and hiyori bullied him for it FOR SURE

which made him super embarrassed

and probably made him cry harder-

the first time he saw you, he tried suppressing it

Day 7: The Future

Fandom: Free!

Pairing: Yamazaki Sousuke x Tachibana Makoto

Wordcount: 761

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6

Makoto and Sousuke chose to hold their bachelor parties inside private bars that were adjacent to each other in the following year. Haru said that the idea was disgusting, but they proceeded anyway.

“Nagisa, I already told you that Ran and Ren were the ones pestering me to get married,” Makoto reasoned for the umpteenth time. “They can’t wait to officially have another onii-chan in the form of a brother-in-law, is what they say. I did not get married for the sole sake of trying to one-up you and Haru, or however it is you put it.”

“Nagisa, lay off the teasing already,” even Haru stepped in at this point, for which Makoto is thankful. “I know him the best. Makoto will not admit it even if what you’re saying is absolutely correct.”

“Haru! You’re supposed to side me in this!”

Nagisa snickered. “It’s true, Mako-chan. How else did you two go from idiots who can’t admit they recognised each other to fiancés who are getting married tomorrow in the span of seven months?”

Makoto signed after taking a sip of his martini. “I regret how I encouraged Kisumi to attend the party next door. Why is he so close to both Sousuke and Rin again? He would have been on my side if he was here.”

“The party next door must have been a lot less fun with all the goody-two-shoes on their side. Aren’t you glad you get to hang out with the nurses instead, my boo?” Nagisa turned to his boyfriend.

“Actually, thinking about this logically, I’ve come to the conclusion that I belong with the rest of the doctors next door,” said Rei.

“I forgot you’re a goody-two-shoes yourself, Rei-chan.”

“I mean, think about it: Haru-senpai betrayed us by being in a secret relationship with Rin-senpai that started even before ours did, meanwhile Makoto-senpai betrayed us with Sousuke-senpai by getting married before we could. As a result, we are now no longer the iconic couple of TUH!”

“Oh, cry me a river,” Makoto must have had too much to drink, but Haru glanced at him for that and for a moment he looked like he was proud.

Haru then took a sip of his water—he was the designated driver—before clearing his throat and turning to Makoto. “I’m surprised you didn’t drop the idea of adjacent bachelor parties.”

“Me too, Mako-chan used to listen to everything Haru-chan said!”

“It’s great that you no longer do. Looks like Sousuke has been a good influence,” Haru had a small smile on his face as he said this, and Makoto could tell he meant it with his whole heart.

“And a bad influence at the same time! I never thought Mako-chan would be the type to marry someone so quickly,” Nagisa added. “But I’m so glad, because it must mean that he makes you so incredibly happy.”

It made Makoto all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that his closest friends were happy for him. “Well, he and I missed out on all those years we could have after all… Our relationship has been so steady and Sousuke is a reliable presence in my life, someone I can trust everything with. So, I thought why not? I genuinely can see myself being happy in a marriage with him, even ten years down the line.”

“Awwww, that’s so cute!” Rei giggled and was the one who actually had too much to drink. “Let’s do a toast, to Makoto-senpai and his future with Sousuke-senpai! Let’s do a group hug too!”

So they raised their glasses and Rei huddled everyone together in a tight embrace after they downed their drinks. For a brief moment, Makoto was on top of the world. To love and to be loved by the most important people in his life, there was nothing more he’d ask for.

He got teary-eyed and had a blocked nose then, before their moment was interrupted by the door being thrown open.

Nitori, still clad in his uniform, rushed in while panting, “I finally finished my shift!” He then realised that the team was having a moment without him, and instead of feeling bad about walking in at a bad time, he whined, “Hey, don’t leave me out just because I got off late! I am important too for making Makoto-senpai the fake patient during Dr Yamazaki’s birthday.”

Makoto would say that they’d end up together either way thanks to Kisumi, but he chose to just pull Nitori in to join in on the group hug.

There, everybody would be satisfied with the happy ending.

Random thoughts after Free!-The Final Stroke-

Soooo I watched the rinharu love confession movie again (aka The Final Stroke part 2) and I'm having a lot of feelings and thoughts I need to externalize (not just about rinharu). Since the only friends that might understand what I'm going to say are you, my lovely people on tumblr, here it goes (inserting read more because possible spoilers):

Part 1: supporting characters

Starting with some quick thoughts of things I would love to see being more explored but that I'm more than happy with the little moments we got because they're precious anyway (and it leaves space to our imagination which is amazing too):

Nagisa being the most upbeat person to ever grace this planet This boy is the most happy and adorable and angelic creature on earth! Seeing more about Haru's childhood and his friendships touched unknown places of my heart and a big part of it was because of little Nagisa. He's just so caring and intuitive even as a child and manages to lift up everyone around him it makes me warm (we specially see this by the way nobody can ever be actually annoyed with him giving them nicknames and just being overly affectuous all the time, kid's getting away with murder in this group and I find that amazing). JUST LOOK AT THIS LITTLE BEAN

The girls' friendship Gou, Isuzu and Ayumu are amazing on their own and the moments we have of them together are so refreshing??? I'm not sure I can even describe it but it just makes me really happy to see that the girls interact by themselves without the presence of the guys specially Isuzu and Gou (which I might ship but not really 'cause their friendship being totally platonic is important to me?) (I never said my thoughts would make completely sense so keep reading at your own risk) (but also don't give up on me ༼ つ ಥ_ಥ ༽つ). Either way, I do love the fact the anime is centred around men's swimming and the boys' growth together, but the women here are really important to that growth too (without Gou helping with the club I don't think the story would developt at all) and it's great knowing they have their own things and plans together even if not all of it happens on screen.

Kisumi, Sousuke and Rin's friendship Personally, I love Kisumi! I love how extroverted and cheeky and supportive of his friends he is (even Haru and their relationship is really funny to me but I might talk about it at some other point). The focus here is the fact Kisumi, Rin and Sousuke met in primary school and they might not have really kept in touch during their lives before meeting again later in high school/university but I love how every moment we have of them together we just know they've known each for a long time. I particularly found the last scene of Kisumi and Sousuke in Final Stroke really good because it's not a long scene at all and the others boys (Ikyua, Hiyori, even Kinjou) are present but they just bring me "we were little kids when we met and now we're adults we still manage to ambarass each other with the things we say" vibes. Love it, love them, I'd love to see more of the Sano trio.

And yeah this is longer than I thought it would be already and I got into rinharu fanfic mood so I'll just split my comments and babbling in parts. Next one will be about people's relationship with Haru in the movie probably (this one wasn't really descriptive, but the spoilers might appear more heavily in part 2).

Getting a Kiss on the Cheek by his Crush | Several

Haru:

After a whole day together at the pool with his crush, Haru is over the moon. Not that he shows because 😐

"Thank you, Haru... I had fun today" and chuik!💋

He is awful at handling affection.

So the exact second your lips come in contact with his skin, he freezes.

He has no idea what to do. Don't get him wrong, he likes it, given this is his crush we're talking about. But my god, he's stupid.

He malfunctions.

Which could give you the wrong idea, so probably he will panic when he sees you all discouraged.

You're leaving but... NO, he doesn't want you to leave!

So he has to be quick, and call your name... A bit louder than he intended.

"I... I liked it too..."

His face says it all, the shy pouty face he does when he's embarrassed and his cheeks just a nice shade of pink.

It's impossible not to smile at that.

"We should do it more often" and he gets another kiss. And these times, he returns the gesture.

"Yeah... we should" and he finally lets you see that lovely smile of his.

Makoto:

Makoto is really shy, he's friendly and lovely, but he has no idea how to approach his crush.

You hang out as friends and everyone (for argument’s sake I'll say you're part of the swimmer group of friends, whether as a swimmer or like Kisumi) can tell you both like each other but the two of you.

To the point where they ditch you both, so you spend a day together as an unexpected date of sorts. Like in a festival or something, and you're both left to be together-

He is really nervous at first, especially if he is made aware what's going on:

"Nagisa: We're not arriving, Mako-chan, enjoy your date lol"

He starts off very stiff and awkward because he likes you a lot and why are you so beautiful and why are his hands sweating-

But again, one of the things he likes about you is that you're friends, and you make him laugh.

So it doesn't take long for him to honestly just have a good time.

You guys laugh and joke and spend all your designed money on games and snacks.

It's a lot of fun, but Makoto is really swooning.

So by the end of the night, you stand on your tip-toes to what he assumes it's a hug.

But he just feels the light flutter along with a soft chuik! 💋

He can't stop his heart from racing. His face is red, his palms sweaty, knees weak, arms heavy, mom's spaghetti. He is absolutely flustered.

But unlike Haru, you can tell in his eyes that went to heaven. He even does the tilt head smile.

It's not official until a while after, but dates likes this became a common thing immediately.

Rin:

Oh my god, he's so CUTE

He invites you over to a competition, and he does great, as usual.

And to celebrate, you all go to a karaoke. Which Rin's canonically awful at, LOL

But anyway, Sousuke and Haru pressure him into signing in front of everyone.

Which he does.

And it sucks.

Look, before an angry crowd comes to get me, I don't think he's a bad singer, at all. He probably just gets nervous and mumbly.

But the song ends and everyone is laughing and teasing.

He does this pout bad boy thing he does when he's embarrassed, looking down, frowning, and turning his voice deeper to be scary.

"The mic's wrong... and I don't even know the song that well..."

So you take the chance to whisper in his ear, "I think you did great" and peck his cheek. 💋

He goes red in a second.

Of course, everyone else notices, obviously.

And he wouldn't be so embarrassed if you weren't laughing about it too.

And it's hilarious, he will be buried next Saturday-

Just kidding.

Somehow, that whole number got him a date with you... But he wasn't the one that had the guts to ask 😉

I feel like he would be really upset that you beat him to it... But really happy to know you return his feelings, and he, being as competitive as he is, has determined that he will be the one asking you out on your next date.

Sousuke:

Sousuke is a very chill person, he doesn't get shaken much by emotions, right?

Hahahaha. WRONG!

He's what 10 years of anime slang have led me to classify as a kuudere, like Haru and Ikuya... sort of. But better because (sorry Haru and Ikuya, but at least) he does express emotions, he's just generally calm and well-mannered.

He would even be a very good flirt, given how in control of his emotions he is. Like sure, he can take a smartsy comment and shoot one back, this verbal love battle is something he has on the bag.

BUT GODDAMMIT, IF THESE BOYS AREN'T EASY TO FLUSTER, MAY I BE STRUCK BY A LIGHTNING BOLT RIGHT NOW.

I feel Sousuke would be especially flustered by casual PDA.

Like, he went to buy drinks and got one for you because... he be crushing badly and in general loves to do stuff for you.

He thinks he has his feelings under control, he's just being nice because he likes to be nice to you.

Right?

Well, he wouldn't even see it coming.

Just a casual "thanks" and an absentminded kiss on the cheek 💋, and he's done for.

Given the naturality of the situation, he wouldn't make a huge fuss. But oh boy does that little kiss keep you on his mind more than usual. That cute lil' "I don't stay up all night thinking about them" later that night, up thinking about you... "Uh oh".

It was just a little thing, but you did it like it was just engraved in your soul to do so. And it felt so good that he just knew that he wanted one of those every day for the rest of his life.

Definitely, the last push he needed to officially ask you out.

Asahi:

Oh boy, look. Let's get the cat out of the bag and start of saying... it's gonna be dramatic... and very loud.

WHICH IS NOT A BAD THING! It's not a bad thing.

That's just who Asahi is. He's very vocal about his feelings... and noisy...

Honestly, it's for the best. That way there's no room for doubt and (cue author's toxic relationship flashbacks that I didn't delete because I find it funny) anxiety because you don't know how he really feels about you, and having to ask over and over what he's thinking... And long discussions over the same thing so nothing gets fixed and relationship slowly dying, and cheating and...

Wait, what was I saying? Oh, right.

Asahi would be AT LEAST very obvious about his feelings for you... if he doesn't just straight up say it to your face.

Like, not the second he suspects he likes you, obviously.

He do be taking his time to analyze if it's just "do I just think they're pretty and cool, funny and them being around makes my day a thousand times better, or is this an actual crush?"

I feel like he would do the thing where he talks to the mirror to ask himself about you 🤣

But once he figures out this is serious. He would hype himself up to tell you. Even picking a flower to gift you. I feel like he would try to give you a full bouquet, but his friends would suggest starting off chill, so he doesn't overwhelm you, particularly if you happen to be a shy bean.

So he meets you by the campus gardens with the flower behind his back and just gifts it to you as he effusively tells you how he feels.

He is ready for a rejection when...

Chuik! 💋

It's the loveliest feeling ever to open his eyes and see that the sound was a sweet kiss to the cheek and his feelings returned.

He would do this cute thing some guys do of punching the air excitedly like "YES, YES, YES, YES!!!"

Ikuya:

Ikuya tries to act like Haru, but he is like a bazillion times easier to fluster.

Just like Sousuke, casual affection would be the end of him.

And at first, when you're just friends, it's fine!

He just gets a bit embarrassed that you peck his cheek when you greet him or say goodbye before parting ways. Just a snitch.

He does that thing he does when he's shy of puffing his cheeks and looking away red in the face.

Just as his base personality can't decide if he's a kuudere (like Haru and Sousuke) or a tsundere (Rin), and it's really cute. Honey, you're infatuated, that's what you are.

I feel like whether you're oblivious of his feelings or not, it's just funny and cute to see him all flustered when you're affectionate.

It's all friendly banter for now.

Until it isn't.

One day it changes, and the kiss feels different.

It's a full on kiss while you cup the other cheek, just overly gentle but definitely beyond friendly smooch 💋

It feels overly intimate and special. And he just loses it.

He stutters and covers his face, completely shy.

On one hand, he's happy because that confirms it? You like him too?!?!?! Yeah, u do. But he didn't know that.

On the other OH MY GOD THEY LIKE ME TOO.

BONUS! BECAUSE I LOVE THEM-

Rei:

He is shy, very shy, he is an absolute swooning moron.

Rei is definitely the type to try to impress you, but just makes you laugh because he never quite succeeds.

Like, you know that trope where they try to impress the love interest, but they're so bad they're actually good, and the love interest falls because "you're funny".

That's him, that's Rei.

So you're the one to make the first move and after his swim practice, you ask him out to watch a movie or something. He's thrilled!

"Okay... I'll b-be sure to pick you up at six!" his voice is cracking he's so nervous.

Cutie.

"Okay, cool" you giggle and kiss his cheek. 💋

OH, THE TEASING YOU UNLEASHED UPON THIS POOR BOY ONCE YOU LEFT

But he's thrilled because somehow he did it, somehow!

(kinda short, but as I was writing this I made a small fic I'll try to post soon)

Nagisa:

He is probably one of the few who would take this with good grace.

Nagisa would make it clear he adores you from the start.

Homeboy has no filter lmao.

Being courted by penguin angel is overwhelming ngl

He brings you food, he insist that you both should go watch a movie or something.

And when Nagisa insists... he insists, and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists... and insists...

Until you eventually you cave in.

He's through the moon.

Nagisa is the kind to talk throughout the movie making excited or happy comments, and jokes from time to time. So depsite it being a movie, the conversation is lively. RIP the other people who paid for their ticket.

It's actually quite fun, not gonna lie. He has eyes only for you, even if he chose the movie.

After movie, you go to eat something because Nagisa is always very hungry. Impressively he pays for it all, like a gentleman (I mena, sure he asks for the rest of the swim dork squad to treat him, of course he has saved up money).

Once again, he's talking the whole time trying to entertain you with funny stories of his friends regardless if you know who he's talking about.

It's actually very endearing how eager he wants you to feel integrated to his life.

FENCER'S HUGE-ASS SPOILER-LADEN DAY 1 REVIEW OF FREE! THE FINAL STROKE PART 2 or How KyoAni Said, "You WILL experience 10 years' worth of emotions in 2 hours and you'll like it!!"

Let's cut to the chase. You know why you're here. I know why you're here. So I won't make you wait any longer. You wanna know every gory detail from this glorious sobfest of a movie? THEN GET THEE BEHIND A CUT!

(warning that this is probably only mildly coherent and has a HEAVY HARURIN BEND. Mostly because THE MOVIE HAS A HEAVY HARURIN BEND. Sorry I don't make the rules I just report on how much boys stay winning)

Now, I was so scared of this movie.

I have a thing, see. If a series ends, and it doesn't end EXACTLY the way I wanted it to? If it does something that I think is a sour note to end on, or even if it just makes some narrative decisions I disagree with?

I can't watch it anymore. I can't read it anymore. Everything I used to love about it turns sour to me and I can't enjoy it. It happened with Haikyuu, it happened with Evangelion. It's happened with dozens of series over the years. A series is pretty much never going to end the way I want it to, and in my case, for whatever reason, that means I can't enjoy it AT ALL anymore. I can't just imagine what happened DIDN'T happen. It's there. I can't forget it, and it ruins the story.

So I was scared of this movie. Because it was the end. Decisions would be made about characters' futures, and I probably wouldn't agree with them. Might even hate them. I was of course under no delusion that there would be any SHIPS confirmed--so that wasn't something I was worried about or excited about--but everything else. Everything else was something real and final that would be canon now.

I went anyway, though, knowing I'd never forgive myself if I just let someone else spoil me. I fought the knot in my stomach, settled in, and watched.

And I cried. Oh boy did I cry. There was definitely a moment there where I knew oh this is it, this was going to be what made me never able to watch this series again. It wasn't disappointment--it wasn't anger--it was just...sadness. A deep well of sadness.

But then they fixed it. And I won't bore you with those out-of-context details now. I'll just say read on, and you'll understand.

And then you'll start to see how amazing it was.

Movie opens with a semi-recap. Not a recap in so many words, but characters remembering things and flashing back to those scenes in the previous movie. No biggie.

Except. Except then KyoAni said, "Hi we're here to kick you in the stomach so settle in for two hours of emotional trauma :)))))" and RIPS INTO AN ACOUSTIC DRIED UP YOUTHFUL FAME. OH YEAH, THEY WERE IN. THIS. BITCH.

"But wait, flashbacks to previous scenes from the last movie? You mean we have to live through That Fight all over again?"

Oh, no don't worry. You don't have to live through it again as it happened.

You have to see how Haru imagined it going and then see his heartbreak when he realizes it didn't happen that way.

You have to hear him tell Rin, beaming and whole-heartedly committed, "Rin, I want to swim in the lane next to you in our next tournament. I want to keep walking forward with you."

Yes, he was explicit in that he wanted to go there with Rin. He wanted his future to be, explicitly, swimming alongside Rin. Competing alongside Rin. Forever.

But then, of course, that's not how it happened.

A lot of this movie takes place in imaginary sequences, dreams and nightmares and memories that never happened. It's very cool, but also a little weird XD So, par for the course for Free! For example, early on as Haru is reliving his fight with Rin, we see lots of flashbacks to them as kids, but viewed in a movie theater (whoa trippy) with baby Makoto and baby Nagisa giving commentary. Scenes of young Haru and Rin fighting morph into them as Power Ranger standins (blue and red ofc), fighting but then deciding to work together, their union being stronger than either of them alone.

Haru has nightmares that play out over and over and over--most of the time of Rin leaving him…but occasionally of him leaving Rin, of him pushing Rin away and avoiding him for so long, refusing to swim with him. Haru resents Rin for his decision to 'leave' him, but he also recognizes that it's his own selfishness and stubbornness that has hurt Rin too.

Elsewhere, the coaches discuss their students. Mikhail remarks that Rin was crying.

Part 2 is set one year after Part 1, for context--and in that time, Nagisa and Rei and Nitori have all graduated…and moved to Tokyo! Rei and Nitori have joined the swim team at Ikuya and Hiyori's school, while Nagisa has joined Kinjou's school's team. The gang's all back together again!

Haru has been training HARD this whole time…to the point that he's hurting himself. He's working himself to exhaustion, and after nearly fainting after one training session, Azuma makes him take a break to rest, warning him that he's trying to do the equivalent of strapping a huge engine into a tiny car--it's going to destroy the car eventually.

Makoto hears about Haru being made to rest because he'd worked himself to exhaustion and immediately tells Rin…who absolutely wants to MURDER Azuma. Makoto has to almost physically restrain him, begging him not to do anything rash when Rin confronts Azuma in a rage over the state he feels he's brought Haru to. Azuma snaps back, "If something's really that important to you, then you shouldn't have let it go in the first place!" Makoto and Rin split up, looking for Haru, who's nowhere to be found.

Rin runs himself ragged searching all over the city, regretting how selfish he'd been. Muttering, "I'm so lame…" he collapses on a sidewalk and rolls over…and sees a beautiful glimmering sakura tree towering over him, lit up in the night. He squints at its brilliance--and just beyond it, standing atop a building, he finally spots Haru.

Rin calls Makoto and tells him he's found Haru, and they meet up at the top of the building, where there's a night pool you can swim in. Haru is floating aimlessly on his back in the pool alone. Makoto moves to go to him--but Rin holds out a hand to stop him. Then Rin jumps in the pool and approaches Haru.

Apologies are made, challenges are issued. "You have a duty to race me," Rin says, harkening back to their first real clash when they reunited in Season 1.

They race. Rin keeps glancing over, watching Haru, as they push each other further and further.

They reach the finish, both panting, and in Haru's mind he sees himself standing once more at that railroad crossing. Rin is there, on the other side. And this time, the crossing guard lifts and Rin rushes toward him.

Back in the present, Rin launches himself into the neighboring lane, wrapping Haru in the biggest, tightest hug. (in a booth, monitoring pool usage, two night guards stare gobsmacked at each other: "Was that…was that a WORLD RECORD?" but of course it isn't official.)

Haru reflects that it didn't hurt this time. It doesn't hurt when he races Rin--or at least he doesn't feel the pain, if it's there.

Makoto approaches the poolside and reaches down, this time to help out not just Haru but the both Haru and Rin. They respond by clasping his hand--and yanking him into the pool with them.

Randomly, but here's where one of the funniest moments imho of the entire movie came, where there's a flashback showing baby Makoto and Nagisa searching for an omamori to give to baby Haru. They find a nice one from the shrine that (they think) reads "Peace of Mind." When Makoto gives it to Haru after much dithering, Haru frowns in confusion at the kanji on the trinket: "Safe Birth" (meant to be given to pregnant women to pray for a healthy, safe delivery XD).

Rin declares that he wants to help Haru find his dream again--he's going to train with Haru directly. This training with Rin blooms into training with just about EVERYONE, as everyone pitches in to help get Haru ready for the World Championships Selection Event coming up soon.

But even with all his friends' help, Haru is still pushing himself, and when the tournament comes around, Kinjou tells Haru, "Looks like you're about at your limit." When Makoto asks Azuma about this, Azuma confesses that he's pretty sure Haru only has one more good race in him--and it's this one, where rumor has it Albert is going to retire. If Haru wants to race Albert again, it has to be now or never.

Ikuya wins his own heat, and Rin wins his butterfly heat -- but when Hiyori hops in the pool for his backstroke heat, who's there in the lane next to him but SOUSUKE. Yup, Sousuke has been brushing up his backstroke since Part 1, as Nao has informed him that it's much easier on the shoulders than butterfly (I bet you can see where this is going!)

Haru takes first in his heat as well--but nearly collapses and has to be taken away to rest before the finals where he'll face off against Kinjou and Albert.

Ikuya wins Bronze in breastroke, and Rin finally gets his first bronze as well. Rin lets Gou wear his medal, and she reflects on how heavy it feels. Rin's mother then tells Rin that he should go do now the thing he really wants to do.

Haru, sleeping, confronts his younger self. "You're you and I'm me." Their experiences and feelings are both valid. They don't need to beat themselves up over it.

When Haru wakes up, he's slept through the 100-meter freestyle finals and his last chance to race Al.

But there's still one more chance for him to swim with his friends--and it's here that Rin, Ikuya, and Sousuke beg their coach to let Haru swim the freestyle leg of the relay with them. This is unorthodox, as Kinjou is the faster swimmer, and the relay team is already established. They therefore decide to split the difference: one team will race the semifinals, and another will race the finals. Of course, the finals team being allowed to race will only happen if the semifinals team does good enough.

Swimming the medley relay in the semifinals is: Hiyori (back) Ikuya (breast) Natsuya (butterfly) Kinjou (free). Kinjou finally gets to see that sight, even if he's not swimming with Haru directly.

In the finals, the lineup is Sousuke (back) Ikuya (again, breast) Rin (fly) Haru (free). Albert is swimming the freestyle leg for his own team too. It's a heated race--and one of the absolute best parts of it for me was that we got to see one last time the image of Rin, glancing up, eyes wide, screaming Haru's name, as we see Haru dive over him in slow motion, his form reflected in Rin's goggles.

It's a bit ambiguous if they win, but we do see in a picture later all four with huge smiles on their faces wearing gold medals. They won that bitch.

But victory is bittersweet: Haru has indeed pushed himself too far, and he collapses.

The next time we see Ikuya and Nitori discussing how he's doing, we learn that after that race, Haru retired from swimming.

I want you to know it was at this point I was absolutely legit bawling in my seat. I was so, so fucking sad. It wasn't an angry sadness, it wasn't really frustration. It was like someone had just died. Because swimming is Haru's life--and not just swimming, but swimming with Rin. Professionally. Competing. Forever. The whole damn movie OPENED WITH THAT. And now it was closing telling us that Haru's dream had been cut short.

ETA: lol ignore the above, I gave myself stress ulcers from mishearing taiin (discharged from a hospital) as intai (retire). Haru does NOT retire. He's discharged from the hospital. He still takes a break from swimming, but it's not that serious.

Haru goes back to Iwatobi after he retires he's discharged from the hospital, and we find out he's entered into some lucrative advertising deals, his face plastered in prominent locations in Tokyo advertising swimwear. He's popular, he's famous, even though he's not swimming professionally.

This is where the credits rolled. It was calm and tasteful, a montage of all the official art from the series over the years. The tears continued. I prayed. I begged. I hoped.

let there be a post-credits scene. please.

Someone heard me. For there was a post-credits scene. Rin is traveling the world. Nagisa and Rei are training in Tokyo with their friends and sempai. Everyone's got their eyes on the next step in their careers, professional and otherwise.

And then we learn: Albert's coming out of retirement.

Why?

"Because there's someone he wants to race again."

Yes. Haru's rehabilitation is finished, and he's returning to the circuit. His first major tournament is in Hungary--where Rin has already arrived and Makoto joins him. It's clear Haru hasn't seen either of them in quite some time (which makes sense--Haru went back to Iwatobi after he took his break from swimming, but Makoto would have needed to stay in Tokyo to study, and Rin has been globetrotting).

Haru heads to the tournament site--and stops at a railroad crossing to let a trolley pass. Between the passing cars, he can see someone on the other side. Rin.

The crossing guards lift, and they walk towards each other, finally reaching one another.

"I dreamed about a race between us," Rin says.

"Me too," Haru says.

Rin grins. "Wanna see how it ends?"

Haru smiles. "Absolutely."

The movie ends with Haru and Rin finally standing alongside each other in matching lanes. On Haru's other side, we can see Albert, who looks equally excited to be back and racing Haru again.

Final clip of the movie: A letter Haru wrote that says "Even once I'm a normal person, I'll keep on swimming."

The final words of the movie are Haru's voice: "I think I'll wait a little bit longer before I become a normal person."

Free! Final Stroke (part 2) spoilers

Since they still haven't announced the new Free movies being licensed in the US, I made the trip to Mexico with @seakittens to watch the last movie this past weekend!! It was an adventure and I almost died from the heat but I guess it was worth it.... the things I do for anime, man.

It's taken me a while to recover and then type this up but I'm gonna try to write as much as I can think of so this will be long lol...

So of course, here come the SPOILERS!!

So, the movie starts Ikuya stuck under a bridge because it's raining. He's talking on the phone to Hiyori and telling him he'll be late to meet him at Maron because he didn't remember Kisumi telling him it would rain. Hiyori offers to bring him an umbrella but Ikuya says he'll just wait. When Ikuya hangs up he turns and sees Kinjou standing next to him. Kinjou apologies for being so mean to them and they talk about the tournament for a bit before Kinjou runs out into the rain.

When Kinjou leaves Sousuke shows up and tells Ikuya he isn't lost but Ikuya calls him out on it. They talk about how Ikuya has decided to go pro and the tournament in Sydney. Then Hiyori shows up with an umbrella for Ikuya.

Next we see all of the Mikoshiba siblings talking over zoom. Momo is talking about how he's going to beat Nitori at the Samezuka farewell race next week and become the next captain. Then they start talking about the Sydney tournament and they show flashbacks to the first part of final stroke.

Dried up youthful fame version:free starts playing and they show parts of Rin and Haru's fight from the end of the last movie. They added a new line of Haru saying that he wants to swim in the lane next to Rin at the next tournament. Haru sounds sadder than he did in the last movie, so things are slightly different than how they played out the first time but it still ends the same.

After the fight it slips into Still life goes on they and show more flashbacks and training...

After all that we then see Haruka as a baby with his grandma and she's showing him the water and videos of waterfalls and stuff. She comments that it's like he's loved by the water.

They show an interview with Haru like the video from the beginning of the first movie with interviews about Haru from the other team members. Haru talks about how he feels about swimming. They ask him about the relay and there's a flashback to when Haru and Rin were fighting in Elementary school and got held after class for fighting and the teacher tells them they need to talk about why they're angry or they'll never solve their problems. Makoto and Nagisa are watching from the hallway and Nagisa says that he hopes they make up and get along soon and Makoto pictures them as the Doppelganger rangers that Makoto mentioned all the way in episode 1. The rangers decide to stop fighting and join forces to beat the bad guy.

It then shows that Haru is watching this scene in a movie theater with his younger self in Albert's jersey sitting a few rows in front of him. It's quite an artistic shot I guess? It appears this is happening in Haru's dreams because they show him sleeping and talking in his sleep.

It then shows people talking about Haru quitting the swim club in middle school and Makoto chasing after him but unable to reach him. They show Rin saying he's quitting in middle school but they've got the adult voices (though acted to sound younger) rather than the original kid voices from season 1.

Haru's younger self in Albert's jersey is an asshole and says mean things and Haru keeps arguing with himself. They show flashbacks of season 1 while him and Rin were fighting and kid Haru tells him he's all alone.

They show Albert sitting alone in his room crying while thinking about Haru's swimming. Mikhail comments about how Albert's swimming is lonely and that makes it feel completely different from Haru's swimming. But that Haru's swimming is like Ryuuji's when he was younger.

Haruka wakes up and goes for a run early in the morning but he exhausts himself and crouches on the ground panting. Sousuke is driving by in his car and picks him up and takes him back to his place. Haru is just spacing out staring out the window and looks really pathetic. Sousuke tells him everyone is worried about him and asks if something happened between him and Rin. Sousuke tells him that him and Rin have fought a lot and hurt each other without realizing it but they've always made up so it will be okay between them too.

As soon as Haru gets out Natsuya is just THERE and I don't even know how he got there lol. I assume he hopped in as soon as Haru got out but I have no idea. Maybe he was secretly there the whole time. Natsuya comments how it's tough being a hero in reference to Haru.

Rin stands in front of the door to Mikhail's office talking to himself, practicing a speech to tell Mikhail about how he wants to know how to keep swimming 5-10 years into the future. To be a pro. To keep swimming with Haru. When he opens the door to the office Mikhail isn't there and he's disappointed but then Mikhail shows up behind him and apparently heard the whole thing anyway. Mikhail tells him it's decision and if he wants to do it he'll support him.

Next we see Asahi at the laundromat washing clothes and when he turns around he's startled to find Rin there. He didn't notice him at all. Rin is sitting there looking super depressed.

Asahi tells Rin since he can swim butterfly so well he should have more confidence and Rin says he hasn't lost his confidence... or maybe he has. Maybe he was just expecting too much. Asahi tells him that he once had a time where he wasn't able to swim free anymore and he realized how important it was just just be able to swim normally. Rin tells him that Ikuya asked him what he wanted to do and Asahi tells Rin that anyone would ask him when they see him looking like that and Rin just wonders if Haru would ask.

Next we see the underclassmen joining the college teams. Rei and Nitori join Shimogami with Ikuya and Hiyori. Nagisa and a whole bunch of Samezuka guys join Naribusawa with Kinjou. The Samezuka guys comment that Kinjou reminds them of old Rin and that he seems scary. Nagisa just goes up to him and asks him if he can swim and stuff and acts all cheerful and Kinjou is kind to him so the Samezuka guys think he might be okay but Kinjou yells at them when they talk to him.

We then see Nitori, Rei, and Nagisa bowling. Rei of course sucks because he's just thinking about the theory on how to do it. Makoto shows up and they talk about how they all decided to keep swimming and Nagisa says it's because they actually really do love swimming. They ask about Haru but Makoto deflects and says that he's just busy getting ready for the next tournament. Nagisa tells him if he's worried about Haru he needs to tell him.

Haru is training with Ryuuji but he's exhausted. Ryuuji tells him to stop for the day but when Haru tries to walk away from the pool he collapses. Haru's legs twitch in a weird way and Ryuuji demands to know when that started but Haru says it doesn't hurt and that after swimming his hardest he just can't get any strength in them. Ryuuji tells him that he should stop swimming like that until he reaches the last 20m of the race and Haruka demands to know why. Ryuuji tells him that he's pushing too hard and that he's going to injure himself if he keeps going the way he is. He needs to take a year to build his body up. Haru complains that will be too late because Albert announced he was retiring after the next tournament and he won't be able to beat him at this rate.

Sousuke, Asahi, Ikuya, Hiyori, and Natsuya are all training with Makoto and Nao as their trainers. They're still worrying about Haru.

Haru is still overworking himself. Ryuuji catches him swimming hard and tells him he told him to stop swimming like that and forces him to stop swimming. We see Rin training and then he gets a call from Makoto. Rin shows up at Haru's training place where Makoto is talking to Ryuuji and demands to know why Haru isn't there training. Ryuuji tells him he's forcing him to take a week off. Rin yells at him and says that if he takes a week off now he won't be in shape to do the tournament. That swimming is too important to Haru. Makoto makes Rin stop, but Ryuuji yells back telling Rin if he cares so much he should tell Haru himself.

Rin and Makoto run around Tokyo searching for Haru. They aren't able to find him anywhere. Rin thinks about how he's always is so selfish and pretends like he doesn't notice Haru's feelings and took advantage of how strong Haru was. Rin trips and rolls onto the ground. He looks up and sees a sakura tree in bloom above him. He looks up through the branches and sees Haru on a roof of a building. Rin calls Makoto and tells him he found Haru.

Rin and Makoto go to the top of the building and find Haru floating in a pool on the rooftop. The sign outside calls it a "night pool". It's night time and there are red lights shining on the surface of the water. I don't even know how long Rin was standing there staring at Haru before Makoto got there but Makoto starts walking towards Haru and Rin stops him and starts walking toward Haru and stripping. He hops into the pool and asks Haru to race him. Tells him he has an obligation to swim with him since he hasn't said he will quit again. (reference to season 1 fence scene) They race, Haru swims better, he doesn't feel exhausted and one of the lifeguards watching the pool comments they set a world record but the other one says that's crazy. Rin hugs Haru, him and Makoto tell Haru how they feel. Rin says he admires Haru and he needs to stop making him saying over and over. Rin and Haru tease Makoto and pull him into the pull with them when he tries to get them out.

Makoto tells Haru a story about how when they were kids Haru was upset because he lost to some middle schoolers in a race and he was upset about it. The middle schoolers also made fun of Makoto and Nagisa. Nagisa and Makoto wanted to cheer Haru up and tried to go to his house, on the way they see Elvant(sp?) Volandel (which the staff said at a theater stage greeting is Albert's dad) at a stand at a festival buying a mamori (for safe childbirth because Albert's little brother was about to be born). Nagisa and Makoto decide to buy one as a present to cheer Haru up. They go to Haru's house but he's not there, they eventually find him at the festival and follow him up to the ocean lookout that they go to all the time in the series. They give a mamori to Haru but he asks why it says anzan (安産 safe childbirth) and Nagisa and Makoto are shocked it doesn't say anshin (安心 peace of mind) so Nagisa writes over the second kanji to say shin instead with a pen.

Haru trained harder and ended up beating the middle schoolers in the next tournament, they stopped bullying Makoto and Nagisa, and Rin heard about the tale of the elementary schooler beating some middle schoolers and decided he had to race that guy and that's how he originally got interested in Haru. Haru says he doesn't remember something that happened so long ago.

Haru says he wants to beat Albert at the next tournament, that he doesn't want it to end this way. That he doesn't know what will happen to his body but he wants to swim his all. Makoto and Rin go with him to talk to Ryuuji and ask him to let Haru practice and let the practice together. Ryuuji tells them to do what they want.

Ikuya and the others are all training together and Natsuya tells them they have to train hard because they have to qualify at the All Japan Tournament in order to qualify for the tournament in Fukuoka.

There's a flashback to when Ryuuji and Mikhail are younger and Mikhail is resting his arm on Ryuuji's shoulder and asking him to race with him. Ryuuji tells him there's no point since they're alone in the water. Kiyofumi comes up, apparently they haven't seen him in a while, and he calls Ryuuji "Ryuu-chan" and Ryuuji tells him not to use -chan. Kiyofumi tells Ryuuji he wants to see his swimming because his swimming makes everyone feel better. Current Ryuuji says that while they might have been cocky back then if he could go back to that time he would.

Sousuke and the others find Haru sleeping outside under a tree and they comment that he's been sleeping before practice a lot recently. They all decide to to everything they can to help him like doing his laundry and stuff.

Through the rest of the movie they keep mentioning that they're doing medical checks on Haru and he keeps passing them so I GUESS he's fine but he's sleeping all the time lol.

It's time for the All Japan Tournament. Rin and Sousuke compete in fly. Sousuke asks if they should bet who buys drinks over who wins but Rin says since they've made it this far they just need to aim for medals. Haru and Kinjou qualified in 100m free, Rin, Asahi, and Natsuya qualified in 100m fly, Ikuya qualified in 100m breast, Hiyori and Sousuke qualified in 100m back. They originally had Sousuke swimming backstroke for rehabilitation but since there were so few back swimmers they had him train in it.

Nagisa and Rei make misanga (good luck bracelets) for everyone.

The Gou, Isuzu, Momo, and the younger Iwatobis are all planning watching the Fukuoka tournament at Iwatobi SC but Ayumu isn't there because she had to do something with her family and will arrive late... apparently that means in a helicopter and they end up going to Fukuoka to watch the tournament in the helicopter.

Ryuuji is getting ready at the tournament and has Makoto helping him. They run into Kinjou and Ryuuji tells Kinjou he has learned he loves swimming this past year and that he won't run away anymore. He says that someday he'll save Kinjou too in order to fulfill is promise with "that guy" (Kiyofumi). Kinjou says okay and then tells him that he thinks Haru is at his limit. Makoto wonders what it means and Ryuuji says that Haru's overworking himself when he swims fast and he probably can only swim like that for one more tournament.

In the locker room Kinjou asks Haru why he's doing so much for swimming and Haru says he doesn't know but that being in the water is his special place.

Haru swims in the qualifier for the 100m free, Ryuuji is watching and telling him to hold off on swimming harder but Haru speeds up right after the turn and Ryuuji calls him an idiot. Haruka wins but Ryuuji asks "why now?" and they show a flashback of Kiyofumi dying.

Rin and Ikuya talk about making this far, Hiyori says that he believes in Ikuya and Ikuya blushes.

Rin and Ikuya win bronze in their races. Rin puts the medal around Gou's neck and she says it's heavy and Rin agrees and says it's surprisingly heavy. Rin's mom and Gou both congratulate him but Rin's mom tells him that he still has something to do (implying taking care of Haru.)

Kinjou find Haru sleeping on a bench and puts his jacket over him. Sousuke comes up and tells him not to mess with him but Kinjou is just worried about him. Kinjou wonders why everyone is so obsessed with Haru and Sousuke says maybe he'd understand if he swam with him. Kinjou says to let Haru sleep since Haru still has things to do. Sousuke takes Haru to the nurse and he sleeps through the 100m free final. Kinjou wins bronze. Albert wins gold. Kinjou asks Albert if he's okay quitting without racing Haru.

While Haru sleeps he has a dream about Rin and the others asking him to swim in the relay with him in elementary school. Child Haru runs away and Adult Haru stops him and asks him where he's going. He tells himself not to run away from his feelings and that he needs to do what he wants to do.

When Haru wakes up Makoto, Rin, and Ikuya are there with him. They tell him not to move yet but Haru says he has to go.

The Team Japan leaders start to announce who will be in the relay but Natsuya tells them to stop and that they should let Haru swim in the relay. The other leaders are outraged but the director is all for it and lets them do it. They set up two teams so Haru can rest and if the first team makes it through the preliminary race, Haru can swim in the final. The teams are Hiyori (back), Ikuya (breast), Natsuya (fly), and Kinjou (free) for the preliminary and Sousuke (back), Ikuya (breast), Rin (fly), and Haru (free) for the final.

Albert also asks to participate in his team's medley relay so he can race Haru.

Nagisa hands out the misanga to everyone before the relay races to cheer on "team Haru".

(at the staff talk they said Nagisa forced Kinjou to wear one too)

Haru is sleeping again during the prelim but he somehow managed to pass another medical check so he's fine.

Rin and Ikuya wait outside the room and Ikuya asks if he's okay not seeing him right now, but Rin says he told him they're not like that. Ikuya says it's their turn to support Haru this time. Rin says that's the reason he swims.

Hiyori, Ikuya, Natsuya, and Kinjou swim the prelim and win (obviously) and then Sousuke, Ikuya, Rin, and Haru swim their race. They come in first and get the gold medal. They all hug and cry. Even Haru. Ryuuji crys watching them. As they hug Haru passes out and Rin pulls him into his lap. Everyone from the team runs down to the poolside calling out Haru's name.

we see a large billboard of Haru in Tokyo that says "Stay strong! Be Free!" on it (pictured above) and people commenting about the billboard. There's a girl walking down the street reading a news article about Haru winning and being hospitalized. She looks around when people say "Nanase" commenting about Haru. It has been confirmed this girl is Aki as designed by Nishiya in one of the staff stage greetings. Nishiya also designed the causal clothes that Haru and Rin wore in the movie.

We hear Nitori and Ikuya talking about Haru. Nitori asks if he's okay and Ikuya says that Haru was released from the hospital last month and returned to Iwatobi. Nitori hopes that he's able to swim again because not just free, but relays are part of who he is.

We see the credits which show almost every single magazine art published for free over the years... there's a few missing but it's a ton of art.

We see Nagisa, Rei, and Asahi getting ready for a tournament and talking about how everyone is getting better.

Momo is the captain for Samezuka, Ayumu is the captain for Iwatobi (but how I don't know. She can't even swim!? How do you have a captain who can't swim??) She has red glasses like Rei and seems to be acting like Rei.

Hiyori comments about how Kinjou's cousin was Ryuuji's childhood friend and Kinjou says he'll explain later. Sousuke tells Kinjou to act nicer and Kisumi teases Sousuke for being the one to say that. Kinjou asks Sousuke to race him in butterfly but he says that he needs to race Asahi first. Ikuya says he'll race him in free and Kinjou says they can do IM too. They argue over it and Kisumi comments that he hopes they'll get along soon and Ikuya says it will take a while before that happens.

Next we see Gou and her friend talking about how Rin has gone overseas again. This time to Hungary. They talk about how well Haru did at the tournament and Gou's friend says that it's sad that Haru wasn't swimming anymore since then and Gou starts to say that she heard from her brother that he is now.

Albert also came out of retirement to continue swimming because he has someone he wants to swim with. Natsuya says this will make the Athens tournament even more interesting. Haru is swimming again. He apparently swim in a tournament in Mexico last week. Mikhail teases Ryuuji about being happy about Haru and Ryuuji tells him to shut up because Rin is in Hungary right now. Mikhail says he is and so is Haru.

Makoto is wandering around Hungary by himself and manages to find Haru on the street and Haru is surprised to see him. Makoto comments that Haru's rehabilitation seems to be going well. Haru says it is and it's relaxing to be here instead of Japan because he was getting hounded by reporters for interviews there. Makoto says that Rin is in Hungary too.

Rin is on the street looking at things with Ai because Ai is doing an exchange program in Hungary. Rin comments that Ai never told him that he was related to Mikhail and Ai says he was too embarrassed but now he will tell people because he's going to get even stronger.

Rin and Haru are walking towards a train crossing and the arms come down and a train passes. When the arms lift they walk into the middle of the train crossing. Rin says he saw a dream about a tournament and Haru says he did too. Rin asks if he wants to know how that dream will turn out and Haru says he obviously does.

We see Asahi and his sister talking about the Athens tournament and then they talk about Asahi's sister's husband who is a swimming reporter and how he made a documentary about Haru and the others. He took a whole bunch of things that were filmed of them over the years and interviewed people about them.

We see the second time capsule they burried, Haru is wearing his high school jersy so the image is probably when they were burying the time capsule. The letter he put in says "even if I become a normal person, I'll keep swimming" and Haru's voice over says "I can wait to become normal for a little longer."

I had an internal conflict regarding FS 2 yesterday morning and wrote something about it. I guess I should warn you that it has spoilers(?

And it's pretty long too

I did this to feel better and take it off of my chest so yeah, you dont have to read it if you dont want to

I remember that the first day I saw it everything was fine. The problem started after the scene where MakoHaruRin are lying by the pool that was conveniently in a cafe(?

I thought something was wrong because the spoilers had me thinking some specific things were to happen

After that I couldn't enjoy it one bit anymore. Yes, I made jokes and everything, like normal, but I felt something strange. More than anything my problem was with Makoto. Like something in him didn't quite fit me.

On the way home I thought how sad it was that Makoto's dialogue had clearly been curtailed. And that distracted me so much that I couldn't process the rest.

I even mentioned this to my friend, and she told me that she didn't see anything, but it was because she was fixated on Rin.

I got discouraged because that problem with Makoto kept bothering me, and after thinking and thinking, I realized that I couldn't even enjoy the rest of the movie just because of this.

So I saw it the next day too, because I couldn't stay like this. Free! it's everything for me and I couldn't feel so bad about the ending because of something I attributed to the influence of spoilers.

Her, the one badly obsessed with an anime of men swimming and of dubious sexual orientation.

The second time I saw it, I really enjoyed it. I pushed all the spoilers and expectations as far from my mind to see if I could see something else. And I did.

It's not perfect, of course not. It has some things that made me say ah:

The fact that Rin told Haruka that he admired him again.

Getting Albert's father visiting Iwatobi.

The very subtle glimpse of Ryuji's friend whose name I don't remember.

That Ryuji said that he was going to save Kaede, but then nothing happens

The lack of more background for Rei, Nagisa and Gou.

That clear lack of dialogue from Makoto. This, more than anything, is the one that makes me feel the saddest even now.

I also missed Kisumi 🥺 I didn't appreciate you bb when i had you

BUT there were a lot of things I enjoyed as well:

The scenes in which they appear in the cinema (ironic) are very cool.

Haruka healing his inner child who has always been hurting for many reasons touched me a lot.

Especially because Haruka is my baby, my child, my little boy 😫🥺 Also, I saw people saying that this one or that one is the villain, but for me the final boss, the real villain of Haruka is Haruka. Blessed be KA who at least sent him to rehab because I've been wanting him to go for YEARS to therapy because Haruka is anything but fine, without discussing if he is depressed or not, or if he is autistic or not, or if he has whatever. He is wrong and let's leave it there.

The fact that Makoto told Haruka that "the you who is free is the one I like the most" was also very nice for me

It's not like Haruka reacted by blushing or something, but at least I saw that it stuck in his mind and that means to me that it's something important.

The fact that Rin went all pissed off to argue with Ryuji for putting Haruka to rest and then Ryuji told him all the bad things he have been doing to his face was satisfying for me. I love Rin, cute boy, but sometimes he does really stupid things and someone needed to put a "stay still" on him and I'm so glad he thought it over(? Although we go back to the fact that he told Haruka that he admires him when it's something we already knew. But then we have Haruka who realizes that okay, Rin left him traumatized, but he also taught him several things

I like how everyone always had Haruka at an altar and everyone said he was a "Hero", but we see that he is not. Haruka is as human as any of them and I like that it's not just one of them (as was the case with Asahi in HS when Haruka passed out) the one to notice

And it is when everyone tries to return the favor not only out of moral duty(? To settle accounts(? But out of genuine love for him (as a friend or partner you decide I am not going to discuss this in this post or in any other) that my heart was crushed.

Haruka is a bit like Makoto. He's not fully aware of the positive effect he has on people or how cool he is, and I don't think he cares either (? As long as he's not having a negative effect on others he's fine (?

I liked that the relay was Sou, Rin, Ikuya and Haruka. It's as if Haruka is closing cycles with his biggest problems (including him because he is the BIGGEST of his problems. Give him therapy and let him go)

I liked the scene of Makoto giving him the last push

I really liked Ryuji as a character, although he also needs therapy.

I liked that Haruka finally found his way to himself and got his freedom. Taking breaks from competitions is very important and intelligent to me

I liked that it ended with Haruka and Rin because for me they will always be the protagonists. And that they finally, FINALLY, are in good terms is everything

Ikuya and Rin winning medals. Sousuke swimming again and competing with Rin. Natsuya proud of his little brother

And yes, I even liked that Asahi had bumps in his career as an athlete. Maybe I would have liked to see a little more, but yes. No matter how hard you try or how talented you are, sometimes it's not enough.

I liked the scenes with the grandmother although they are not as great a thing. I liked the detail of the misangas (?

I liked that Haruka was finally independent of everyone, except himself xd but hey, you can't do much with that

I liked that they showed Haruka's letter that he made together with Rei, Nagisa and Makoto in high school

Perhaps it is more of the same as the other productions, but I am a simple woman to please.

I also want to clarify that I miss the best time distribution of each character a bit. But it doesn't bother me that much either, except for the Makoto thing in FS 2

Damn it 😫 I knew they were going to reduce Makoto's dialogues, but I still got sad

I know Tatsu wasn't right, but I don't feel like he should be punished either. No more than they divorced him at most 👀 but nothing is up to us qjbdns

Anyway I enjoyed every second I saw my love Makotito. Makoto could be only on the cover and I would adore him as if the whole movie was just him (? but I also feel that Makoto's scenes are still important to Haruka.

I think I did like it a lot, I could even say that I loved it but it's hard to me to accept that it's the end, and I have to be honest that I was expecting even more from this movie regarding some characters (Gou, Nagisa, Rei, Ryuji and his friend, and of course Makoto)

But no, i dont want another movie nor season. Maybe I can accept an OVA or something but it must be centered on Nagisa, Gou, Rei, Ryuji, Kaede and Albert.

For me, I cant say it is perfect, but it's really good. I loved it, I enjoyed it but I still have to process some things about it. It's a good end, i believe

This helped me to feel i little bit better about all this end thing.

I still miss my boys and loved them, and I love Free!

“Haru-chan! Rin-chan is here! Are you ready to go?” Haru’s mom called to him up the stairwell. Soon enough, little Haru emerged from his bedroom wearing his ugly Christmas sweater with a cartoon mackerel on it, giving his mother a small nod before slowly making his way down the stairs. Taking his hand, she walked him to the front door where Rin had been waiting excitedly to see his best friend.

“Haru-chan!” he exclaimed, slinging his arms around him into a hug. Of course, Haru didn’t hug him back, but secretly, he was very fond of skinship with Rin, who was completely oblivious to the light blush dusting Haru’s cheeks.

“Alright, you boys have fun!” was the last thing Haru’s mom said before the two friends were off to the annual Iwatobi Swim Club Christmas party.

“Bye, aunty!” Rin called as they made their way down the sidewalk, waving to Haru’s mom who still stood in the doorway.

“How come your sweater has a mackerel on it, Haru-chan?” Rin giggled, pointing to the fish embroidered on the middle of his sweater, “Mackerels aren’t for Christmas! Look at mine! It’s a reindeer.”

“I like mackerel. My mom made it for me,” Haru answered quietly.

“But it’s not a Christmas animal!”

Haru simply ignored Rin’s comment, choosing instead to look out at the beautiful ocean glistening under the sunlight along the path to the Iwatobi swim club. He felt as though the waves were calling to him, inviting him to jump in and go for a swim, but given how chilly it was out, he suppressed the urge to do so.

“Wow! Look at the decorations, Haru-chan!” Rin exclaimed as the swim club came into view, grabbing Haru by the hand and running up to the entrance.

“Merry Christmas, Rin and Haru!” Coach Sasabe greeted at the door, “Makoto and Nagisa are already inside.”

“Merry Christmas!” Rin answered in passing as he dashed into the main room where the arts and crafts station was set up, still dragging Haru along with him. This year, it was wreath making, so staff members had pre-cut paper plates to use as the base, and then hole-punched them and tied them with ribbon so it could be hung. Small squares of tissue paper were cut to use as the leaves, and small bells, pine cones, pompoms, and ribbon were provided to use as embellishments.

“Rin-chan! Haru-chan!” a familiar voice called from one end of the table. It took only a few seconds to spot the small blonde boy, jumping around in his seat and waving his arms in the air for the two boys to see. Next to him sat another boy, bigger in frame with brown hair and green eyes, who greeted Haru and Rin only as they approached, seating themselves in the empty seats next to them.

“Wow!” Rin chimed, peering over at the wreaths his friends made, “Nagisa and Makoto are almost done with their wreaths!” Without wasting any time, Rin grabbed whatever supplies he could get his hands on and started gluing them onto his paper plate frame, eager to join in on the Christmas festivities with his swimming buddies. The three of them finished making their wreaths within the next five or so minutes, meanwhile, Haru was taking his time to make his.

“Haru-chan, you’re so slow!” Rin teased, looking over to see that more than half of Haru’s plate was still empty, “We’re gonna go play games in the back. Come meet us when you’re done!” Before Haru could even acknowledge what Rin said, he’d already run off with Nagisa and Makoto to the games station, leaving Haru at the table alone to finish his wreath. He’d been crinkling each square of tissue paper before gluing it on to make his wreath fuller and fluffier, and at the end, he added some pine cones and pompoms, and tied some ribbon into a bow to glue at the top.

“Wow, look what we have here, a little artist!” Coach Sasabe remarked, seeing Haru’s finished wreath and giving him a pat on the head, “Where are the others?”

“Playing games,” he answered in his usual soft spoken voice.

“Why don’t you go play with them? There’s still time, and we’ve got some pretty good prizes this year, y’know!”

Haru gave no verbal response this time, but after hearing Coach Sasabe’s words, he got up out of his seat and made his way to the back where the games were set up to find his friends. Rin ended up spotting him first and ran up to him with his handful of prizes from games he’d won, one of which happened to be fish. “Here,” he offered, handing the fish plushie over to Haru, “It matches your sweater!”

“Thanks,” Haru muttered, looking away to hide the blush creeping onto his cheeks as he took the toy from Rin.

“I wanna see your wreath,” he demanded, grabbing the craft which dangled from Haru’s wrist by the ribbon tied around the top. “Wah! How come yours is so nice?!” Rin whined, holding his own wreath up to Haru’s to compare.

“Yeah, yours is really nice, Haru!” Makoto added.

Ignoring both of their comments, Haru started to wander off to look at the games instead.

“Oh, oh! This game is fun, play this one!” Rin insisted, taking Haru again by the hand and dragging him along to the games he’d played earlier.

Wanting to get home before it got too dark, the boys only played a few more games before eating and getting ready to leave.

“Shall we walk home together, Haru?” Makoto suggested before the four boys parted ways. Haru hummed and gave a brief nod in response, given he and Makoto did live close to each other.

“Alright then, we’ll be going now. See you guys later!” Makoto announced with a wave, heading down the path to his and Haru’s houses.

“Wait,” Haru interjected, turning back and running up to Rin, who gave him a puzzled look as he approached. “Here,” Haru spoke as he handed his wreath to Rin, “You can have it.”

“Really?!” Rin’s eyes widened in excitement, reaching out to grab the little craft from him, “Thanks, Haru-chan!”

“You still have that thing?” Haru asked Rin as they unpacked the Christmas decorations to put up in their new, shared apartment.

“Yeah, why would I throw it away?” Rin questioned, as he looked for somewhere to hang the makeshift wreath.

“Because it's old…”

“Old doesn’t mean bad. This was the first gift you ever gave me, y’know. I’ve cherished it since then. I even took it with me to Australia.”

Thinking back to that day, Haru remembered that he too received a gift from Rin, that he’d held dear for the past however many years it’s been. He’d still yet to unpack it from one of the many boxes piled in the bedroom, but little did Rin know that Haru never slept without the little fish plushie that he’d won for him at the Iwatobi Swim Club Christmas party that one year in primary school.

yeah, the whole movie of them being on the same team... still feels like a miracle. also if Rin brings the handmade talisman Haru gave him to the competitions, can we officially call them married then? everyone, keep their eyes on an owl in Rin’s bag during the olympics.

omggg idk there’re too many, toooooo many... EVERYTHING?

- the whole sleepover, esp Haru reading Rin’s “my shining” essay about him and Haru smiling while looking at sleping Rin and sofly saying “sweet dreams”;

- Haru asking Rin to go see sakura with him before he leaves for Australia after s2, cause he wanted to be alone with him for a bit (that was just T_T);

- Rin getting jealous when he heard Haru calling Gou “cute” during the interview, then getting super sad, then getting super desperate, then being able to breathe again, when Haru said “I just repeated what Nagisa says”. (”Y...you... you really think that?” omfg Rin... seriously, he’s so easy to make fun of xD, Haru, you ass);

- Rin offering to do a water related contest during the contests suggestion, just to make Haru happy; Haru asking for a Loosey-kun quiz and Makoto asking “who is that?” and Rin without skipping a bit just going “the fish from his weird under the sea game. well, fuck, you know...” (well, fuck, apparently, you know, Haru’s favorite, Haru’s lucky charm, cause he gave this shirt to you, so you’d sleep well);

- Haru asking Rin to make him rainbows in the pool, like when they were little, “just for you” (rip my heart);

- Haru working at Mcdonalds and Rin flirting with him and ordering his smiles instead of food in front of the whole Samezuka team, and threatening to complain to the manager if he won’t give him one;

- Haru giving Rin his favorite Loosey-kun shirt, when he got soaked in the rain;

- Rei asking to record some short video-messages for everyone in Iwatobi and Rin doing all great, until Rei says “and for Haruka-senpai?” and Rin short-circuits after “for..for Haru..”;

- Rin telling Rei that he loves the book he’s reading and then saying that the main character reminds him so much of Haru (oh god);

- Haru being happy and shining, when Rin called him “the only mackerel-man in existence” and Makoto going “why are you glowing like that? was it a compliment for you, cause it’s coming from Rin?”;

- pancake contest and Rin suggesting that he’s gonna dress up as maid for Haru and he can carry him in his arms if he loses (yeah, don’t ask me, idk what to say);

- Kisumi setting them up ona beach date and Rin’s “Kisumi is confusing. Once I thought we were gonna all hang out together, but when I went to the Iwatobi beach only Haru was there.” (my god they’re dense);

- Rin eating the mackerel pizza he hated, just because Haru cooked it;

- Haru’s “but even when he’s far away, I will be able see Rin, when I swim, right?” during his interview with Makoto (tears are real, my god how I’m glad the Australia is finally over);

- Rin's speech about how “going on a trip with your lover is completely different from going on a trip with your family or friends.” (I’m just...);

- their New Year’s fortune drawing (lmao Makoto was so embarrased just standing next to them haha I die);

- Rin buying the mascot strap that Nagisa asked, but then remembering that Haru liked it and buying the one for him too, then saying that he’s gonna buy random things for Haru now, cause he liked it a lot, when Hary said “thanks” (weird kink, but ok lol);

... I don’t know, the list can go on for forever, everything is my favorite, I don’t even think I can remember all the cuteness in one go. if I ever did, I feel like it’s gonna be an endless post, in my mind it all just merged in one giant bowl of love.

Keeping Up With The Free! Boys | Part 2

We’re back now with my boy Sei 😎

And he’s brought with him some chaos

*cue the s/os packing their bags and renting a vacation house*

Welcome back to ep 2 folks quality content only 😎

I imagine many many binge watching and movie nights

And the boys can NEVER agree on what to watch

Rin likes to suggest hardcore action but we all know he really just wants to watch soft romance, forbidden love, the cliches~

It’s funny because Souske knows that too bahaha so he’s always just giving Rin the “yea right” look

Anyways Seijuro decides on a horror marathon???

Don’t know why because all these boys may act tough but most of them were shitting their pants during the movie 😭

Everyone hides behind Sousuke and Makoto bc their so big?

BUT POOR MAKOTO HES LOST HIS SOUL HAHA

Anyways they all just end up watching Trolls instead ajsjsjsj

in the midst, Momo falls asleep and we all know how exaggerated his motions are

He ends up somehow smacking Rin in the back of the head with a nearby pillow

Rin in return gets pretty pissed and hits him back

Then Nagisa suddenly gets this mischievous idea, reaching for a pillow and targeting Rei

He accidentally ends up hitting Hiyori instead and poor boy’s glasses end up flying

He blindly feels around for them bumping into Ikuya, who then knocks over into Natsuya, who bumps into Nao....

Yea you see the domino effect

At this point Haru’s found refuge at the pool outside

It ends up in a huge ass pillow fight anyways you can imagine 🤯

With Seijuro triumphant as he stands tall, hands on hips and his voice booming in victory

After that they all pass tf out right there on the living room floor

I hope you realize that I’m coming up with these headcanons as we go, I have no idea what I’m typing

The next morning the boys wake up to Momo singing hair up

And the smell of Makoto burning the toast

Aii trying his best to use surrounding pillows to cover his ears and nose in the hope of falling back asleep

Almost accidentally ends up suffocating himself until Rin and Sousuke had to come to the rescue

It was not a good morning

Nah actually scratch that-

Seijuro has everyone wake up at 5 in the morning for a run

The neighborhood watching 14 hot boys dying jogging on the streets like 😳

↘ “That’s true, but I will deserve a prize anyway.”

↘ “I hate you.”

↘ Rin smiled warmly at you and then glanced at the clock on the corridor wall. He sighed under his breath and slowly took your hand, smiling again. In the meantime, he felt his heart speed up and he wasn’t sure if it was due to your equally warm facial expression or rather because of the upcoming swimming final.

↘ “Rin?”

↘ “Hmm?”

↘ “Umm... If you win, I’ll take you on a nice date and buy you as much food as you like. You know you’re the best and you can do it! It’s just another race in a row for a hundred meters... I... I don’t know how to swimming like you, but I know you can do it better than you think. I love you and good luck!”

↘ The red-eyed boy laughed softly, quickly pulling your body close to his. The sound of a loud kiss bounced between the walls of the hall, and after a while a big trace appeared on your forehead, as red as your boyfriend’s eyes. Nevertheless, you blushed and then hugged once again a warm and emotional men’s body.

↘ “I will support you, so don’t screw this up, Rin!”

↘ “Okay, babe!”

↘ Haruka almost never showed his emotions, except in the comfort of home or only for you. Even his friends rarely had the opportunity to hear his laughter, see his tears or feel the nervousness in his body language. However, it was different with you.

↘ Therefore, even if Haru didn’t show stress at swimming competitions, you knew perfectly well that he was worried his own freestyle swimming time.

↘ Due to the fact that there is still a quarter of an hour left to the race and you both had a short moment for yourself in the locker room, you decided to support your boyfriend in your own way. First, you took your favourite place on his muscular thighs, and then you embraced his neck with your arms. The black-haired boy was confused for a moment, but seeing your warm smile and eyes full of love he automatically relaxed his tense body.

↘ And after a while, completely without expecting it from you, he felt your warm lips on his hot forehead and also the hand moving his fluffy, dark hair.

↘ “No matter what the result, I’ll take you to dinner today, okay? I will buy you as much fried mackerel as you like.”

— MAKOTO

↘ The competition in which Makoto was to participate was to begin in a few hours. Instead of devoting this time to rest at home, this boy decided to go swimming in the school pool.

↘ Of course, you guessed where your boyfriend is currently, because he didn’t write to you this morning or open the door in his house. Instead of Makoto, his mother greeted you, who further confirmed your suppositions.

↘ When entering the roof with big pool, the sounds of water being hit by feet were slowly coming to you. You sighed quietly and walked confidently forward. You stopped your body at the edge of the pool next to the places for jumping.

↘ Teenager didn’t notice you until he finished his race and took off his swim glasses. His surprise and blush adorning his face and ears were pretty large. You laughed under your breath, though in your heart you felt like screaming at the boy because overworking is really bad for you. First, however, you asked him to raise his body slightly above the surface of cold water.

↘ Then you also brushed his wet hair from his forehead and kissed him, muttering so that he wouldn’t strain himself in this way before his finals. You even threatened him that if it happens again you will end your weekly dates in the cafe. (So he had to agree to it.)

— NAGISA

↘ The blonde boy wasn’t particularly stressed, but he wasn’t too relaxed. He just kept you in a tight hug on his bed and talked about what you two should do after his race.

↘ This was Nagisa’s way of getting rid of unnecessary and stupid thoughts and dark scenarios.

↘ “... Aaaand when we win the relay race I’ll take you to dinner!”

↘ “Huuuh? I’m the one who’s should buy us some food! If you win a relay race it will be something really amazing, so you deserve a present, honey...”

↘ “Ehhh, you don’t have to spend money on me.”

↘ “You say it like you didn’t buy me five plushies in the last week!”

↘ Nagisa looked away at the wall, but after a while he twisted you so that you came under him. Before you knew his lips were pressed to your forehead and his fingers tickled your waist.

↘ Well! Laughter is the best antidepressant and a way to relieve stress!

— REI

↘ This kid is walking stress and total mess before every competition!

↘ All you need is the word ‘butterfly’ or ‘race’ and his face turns white like hospital room. That’s why you are always close to him before the competition to hug him, grab his hand, give him a bottle of water or bento.

↘ This is also the case this time. You two are on your way to the building where swimming competitions will take place. You sit near to Rei in the bus, on the last seats, because you don’t want to disturb other passengers.

↘ Also because what you want to do, you prefer to leave for the view only for yourself and your boyfriend. It is, of course, a quick, but warm and honest kiss straight on the forehead to give him more confidence and relax his body and mind. As you quickly notice, this idea works perfectly!

↘ “I know words are no big deal, but you’ll definitely manage, Rei. I will support you as much as I can and when the swimming finals will over we will order something with home delivery, okay?”

TOP 5 MH SCENES, LET'S GO! :)

My brain shut down trying to think about this because there are so many great moments (plus mooks and drama cds and interviews and novels and—) 😩

💚💙 In no particular order, here are my current top 5 makoharu moments from the show 💙💚

1) The entire pool scene confession (High Speed). From Haru’s admission of “Makoto should just be Makoto” to Makoto’s admission that at his core he’s someone who loves swimming but also his best friend, this moment (or collection of moments; I’m lumping the stairs and swimming scene altogether) is so indicative of their dynamic throughout the series. One of the factors that draws me to Free! is (as cheesy as it sounds) the power of friendship and the indescribable bonds you can create with people through a shared sport/experience. All of the scenes I’m going to be talking about are ones that show how makoharu interactions are pillars throughout the series that remind the audience that the pool only matters because it’s a place where the characters can embrace themselves and their own greatness.

2) The airport scene after the Australia trip (Eternal Summer). A lot of my favorite scenes are ones we talk about all the time, but they are genuinely such good scenes!! It’s one of those moments that just punches me in the soul because it’s a small fleeting moment to everyone around them: a simple welcome home in a bustling airport. However, it is this pivotal moment of reassurance in their relationship because despite their fight, despite the growing distance between them, despite their fears and everything else, Makoto makes one thing clear with his soft words and warm gaze: he still has his hand outstretched and ready to hold onto his best friend, wherever they go next. It’s a gesture of forgiveness and understanding without an apology even being voiced, and it still floors me how well Makoto is able to show Haru that the world isn’t falling apart and that he truly is so, so loved.

3) “I felt so happy, just like you!” + goldfish (Free! ISC). I love getting to see them talk at the festival because it shows their connection at its finest. Makoto gives Haru time to try and work through his feelings about losing to Rin and winning the relay at prelims on his own, but now that they have a moment alone, Makoto is able to gently push Haru forward by voicing how happy he was getting to swim a relay again, and it’s just enough for Haru to feel comfortable enough to voice everything he’s been silently trying to piece together. They both just look so happy after getting to voice how much it means to each other to swim together again (y’know, for the 5 seconds they have before Nagisa barges in). And also THE GOLDFISH!! Haru was on a mission to get those fish before they left for the night and it seems like such a kind gesture. I can’t help but think it has extra meaning just for Makoto to pick up on from Haru, referencing the old goldfish. It’s like he’s saying “hey, look at you, always figuring out how to take care of us as a captain/friend. I always had faith in that side of you.”

4) “Am I really Ikuya’s hero?” (Free! DTTF). The makoharu dynamic in S3 after everything that happened in S2 is so nice because they seem so comfortable and in tune with each other again. This scene stands out to me in particular because Makoto has no problem teasing Haru a bit in front of Asahi and Ikuya while easily understanding Ikuya’s dynamic with Haru. Makoto has endless patience even as Haru sits there confused, wondering how people see him as a hero. In Haru’s mind, I feel like he sees the people in his life as either friends or rivals. Sure, people have seen him as a prodigy or whatever for his swimming prowess, and that has led to compliments and threats, but to be a hero? It’s hard to wrap his head around. However, for Makoto, it makes perfect sense. He’s had a front row seat all his life to the hundreds of eyes that have followed Haru, enraptured in how he connects with the water and finds freedom in it. He’s seen over and over how it inspires people to work harder or step back and appreciate their teammates/friends. Above all else, he’s gotten to see sides of Haru that others rarely do, like how he’s always tried to protect Makoto and look out for his friends in his own subtle ways, and get to consider him a hero in his own right.

5) “It’s meaningless without you” (Free! ISC). It’d be wrong to not mention this scene, y’know? Episode 6 is a turning point for the team as a whole, but it’s such a big one for makoharu specifically because both Makoto and Haru take time to explicitly show how much they care for each other. Makoto does so much up to this point with other people in mind, but now that he’s been freaked out to his wit’s end, he can’t help but tell Haru exactly how he feels. Despite his fear of the ocean, he was willing to go ahead with the training camp because his dream from when they were little kids is still his dream now. He wants to swim and he wants to experience the euphoria of a relay with friends again, but above all, he wants to share in that joy with his best friend. He’s ripped open in this moment and just wants Haru to see how much his happiness means to him and how he isn’t just a replaceable team member or figure in his life — he’s Haruka, and that means everything to Makoto. Nagisa interrupts the moment ~again~ but bonus points to this episode/moment for showing Haru being extra protective and looking out for Makoto the whole time.

Honorable mentions: Haru’s brief apology to Makoto before the tournament + listening to Makoto’s dream, all baby!makoharu montages, nagisa dragging Haru to watch Makoto race prelims and Haru just staring at him swim like 👁👄👁, the entirety of TYM, the way they just look at each other sometimes, etc. etc. etc.

What do you think? Is this possible that they will continue this movie?

And do you mind that I ask you----are you deep down, perhaps, disappointed that there is no romance confirmed here? Especially for RinHaru. Except Makoto who said 'suki' to Haru, although this word is not always about romance.

Or perhaps we can assume that there will be 'something' happen between the two in Hungary? It is just not so explicitly be shown cuz sport anime is basically not a gay anime. Haha.

And whose chance better if we say about romance here? MakoHaru or RinHaru? I mean, there is a gap Haruka in Iwatobi for months before the scene in Hungary right? Do you think that perhaps Makoto confessed his real feelings to Haruka? I heard the other spoiler that they got in a convo before the Hungary scene. What is that about?

I am sorry for my random question. I just like to hear your opinion about Free! Especially the RinHaru things. You are so pro in this area.

They're always able to continue, if they want, but tbh I think they have done a fantastic job of wrapping up the story for these boys. If they do continue, I feel like it would involve the girl presented at the end--who could be Aki, and maybe we'll get to see the story all over again from her perspective and find out why she's in Tokyo to begin with, perhaps starting her own professional swimming career as well.

In complete and total honesty I am not disappointed. I was never expecting it, and more than anything I'm actually relieved there was no romance confirmed -- because it would have manifested in the form of happy het romances with faceless strangers for the boys (except maybe Gou getting with one of themSousuke), showing us "Ten Years Later" futures for them all where their kids meet for the first time and become friends or sth.

As you said, Makoto's suki was not necessarily romantic--the pragmatic part of me says it was Makoto finally voicing his feelings for a friend, something he'd never been really able to do consistently but really needed to do right now. Nagisa has said the same thing to Haru before, and we never took it romantically, and I'm sure if Rin had said it too, it would have been considered non-romantic (but Rin isn't the type to say that to even a close friend).

And regardless of Makoto's intentions, Haru didn't respond to it, and I'm not going to lie that a tiny, evil part of me took some vindictive pleasure in Rin blocking Makoto from going to Haru, his initial instinct when they found Haru, and went to Haru himself, alone >_>

Even in the finale, it was clear Haru had not seen Makoto in a long time, as Haru was shocked to see Makoto there -- whereas both Rin and Haru were expecting each other. And no, I don't think Makoto had seen Haru much if at all while Haru was in Iwatobi, as it's a very long way from Tokyo and Makoto has his own duties and studies. They only ever were able to go back to Iwatobi together before at major holidays/breaks like New Years. It was probably the same here, and they may not have seen each other then depending on when Haru decided to come out of retirement and start training again.

(3) "Or perhaps we can assume that there will be 'something' happen between the two in Hungary? It is just not so explicitly be shown cuz sport anime is basically not a gay anime. Haha.

As I mentioned above, Haru in Iwatobi means he probably never saw Makoto, not that he had plenty of time to see Makoto--because Makoto had to stay in Tokyo, and by the time he had time to come back to visit Iwatobi,

If you want to weigh anyone as having a better chance at romance happening, I know it will make me seem biased, because I'm a HaruRin shipper, but I'm sorry: WE WIN. IT'S THEM AGAINST THE WORLD FOREVER. Makoto's dream is to teach kids to swim. Haru's dream is to swim on the global stage next to Rin. Rin's dream is to swim on the global stage next to Haru. Only two of these are compatible :P That doesn't mean it's a romantic endgame for Haru and Rin, and they'll probably never have the kind of bond that Haru and Makoto have, but their relationship is the one that's the focus of their future--and it's always been that way, from the very beginning of the show. Each season has been about their relationship with each other, and then tangentially Haru's relationship with his other friends. If there was a way for any ship to 'win', it's Haru and Rin--because it's always been about them.

I don't recall any mention of a conversation between Makoto and Haru before they reunite in Hungary.
