Stardew Valley theory(ies) part 2
The old teacher
Something I haven't seen being discussed in the Fandom since I got here and I think is because is one of those things you need to see the detail and stop to think about it.
Currently the children in Pelican Town are all being taught by Penny, but who was there before her to teach the other marriage candidates? And who was schooled by this said person, and most importantly, do we know who that is? Well, today I'll try to find out about this, so let's get to it.
1- the students
Before speculating just who was the teacher i would like to dive in into who was being taught, as in, who were the original children of Pelican Town, for that we'll have to go through each bachelor and Bachelorette to see who lived there long enough to have been schooled.
Alex- According to his dialogue, Alex started living with George and Evelyn after his mom passed away due to some sickness. This could be interpreted as "Alex couldn't stay with anyone else but his grandparents because no one else in his family was available" or "Alex chose to live with his grandparents after his mom passed", for the sake of keeping this in the subject we're handling let's say Alex was sent to his grandparents house when he was pretty young, maybe being 10 at least to 12 at most, so he could have been schooled in Pelican Town while there.
Elliott- We can cut him out of the class because he said in the game he moved in a year before the farmer did, so he's already a adult and thus couldn't be a part of the class of Pelican Town.
Harvey- another less likely candidate, mostly due to his (headcanon) age and a quote he has that says " i came here because I liked the small-town atmosphere, and the potential holistic to patient care." So we can assume he was already a adult and a doctor when he came to Stardew Valley, at most he would be a young adult while the rest would be in their teens.
Sam- On the other hand we have a possible candidate for being a student there, the most revealing thing I can think of is his friendship with Sebastian, from their dynamic we could guess these two have known each other for a long time, leading me to believe they are childhood friends, making a case for Seb as well, another thing that could solidify this more is his mom's relationship with Caroline, who we can guess is the youngest mom in the Valley so not only Jodi was there first, so was her son, Sam.
Sebastian- I believe he also studied in Pelican Town, not just because of what I stated when I mentioned Sam, but also because of his original ambition to want to go to the city, he is probably tired of the routine because he has been there for a long time and doesn't seem to see anything else there as exciting as it was when he was a kid, like how he would go to the train track and watch said trains.
Shane- he wouldn't be one of the students there, according to quotes said by Marnie, Shane has been staying there for months, however there is one thing that...to say the least, makes this all a bit confusing, there's a photo or Marnie holding the hand of a baby when she was younger, by the look of the hair we would assume that it's Jas, but look back to what she said before, Shane has been there for MONTHS, there's no possible way of that being Jas at all, even if we take the in-game time into consideration, Marnie would have to have her current appearance if that was Jas, making people of the Fandom believe that the child is in fact Shane, which means he was in Pelican Town when he was younger, which is possible but I still don't think he lived there, maybe he would be there just to visit his aunt like most kids do when they have a relative that lives in the countryside.
Abigail- I touched a bit of past when I mentioned Sam, and I belive she's a likely candidate to have studied in Pelican Town, not only that but we can also assume her age, in the game Abby is said to be doing online classes, making me believe that she's the youngest of both her friend group and the whole town in general, not currently but at the time before Jas and Vincent came into the picture.
Emily and Haley - Emily mentions that her parents have been traveling abroad for two years and the house was now under their care, and Haley says that she doesn't think living in the country is that bad, thus both sisters could be students in Pelican Town, so maybe Haley and Alex are also childhood friends, meaning they have been the local mean girls for as long as time.
Leah- Leah is a bit tricky, cause looking qt her quotes alone is hard to tell wether or not she has lived there as a kid with her parents, but since this is a free space to speculate, I think is a bit more believable to think she moved there as a adult, possibly to try and get away from her old life.
Maru- she was probably studying alongside her brother, and maybe their little one sided sibling rivalry started way back then, Seb mentions that he and Maru used to fight as kids (admitting most of the time was his fault), maybe she was a top student like our next and final student.
Penny- she definitely lived there, her mother has been working as a bus driver before in that town for a long time, and furthermore, maybe whoever was teaching them inspired Penny to also start teaching the kids in the town.
Now that we have established who is and who isn't in our little classroom, let's start with the possible teachers of this class.
You'll be happy to hear that I have boiled down to two people that could possibly be said teacher, and depending on who you think is most likely, then you get to choose who is it, but a little side note, this is leaving the speculation and theorizing area to a more headcanonish zone.
Evelyn- she's a very sweet young lady so it isn't too far-fetched to think she was like that in her adulthood and with children too, her own daughter entrusted her with her son so it wasn't hard to picture her a possible candidate to be a teacher, however given her position as someone who takes care of the gardens in the town things start to become a bit complicated, but that still isn't enough to throw the possibility out of the way, gardening could be something she started to do after all the kids "graduated" as a way to still lend her hand to the community she has been a part of for a long time.
Gunther- there isn't much to say about him because of the lack of clues and dialog we have od him, we don't even know if he's from the town itself, but let's say that before of taking care of both the museum and library he was just a librarian and was assigned by Lewis himself to teach the children of Pelican Town since he was probably very familiar with the books he possess, this might explain why there are lost books in the town to begin with, they probably got lost because he and the kids would move from place to place in town while listening to what he had to say.
In conclusion, now I have a explanation for my urge to draw a Pelican Town class photo and post it here.

Stories put together from Facebook of all Red’s childhood memories: Either all these are lies or all these are true stories. I guess we will see!
Are we to believe these historical tellings from RED? Stories of when he was either pre-teen/teen and IF so then RED grew up in or near Michigan.
Meandering in Red's mind, or "Red, in his own words." Part 5: His stories
Over 7 seasons we have accumulated a lot of stories about Red, his personal experiences. True or not together they paint a picture of the character.
Some of them are about his childhood:
When I was young, I wanted to be able to dance just like Gary Goddard. I still remember going to the Snowflake Dance and watching him for the first time. That kid, man, he could move. Won the eighth-grade talent show. He was on the Yell Squad. Gary even danced his way into Helen Hummer’s pants, and let me tell you something, that was like breaking into Fort Knox. Then in the summer of ‘88, I saw Gary in the diaper aisle at Safeway. He looked like hell. Gray. Out of breath, fatigued. Turns out Gary had a bicuspid valve, needed a heart transplant. He was on the wait list until the day he died.
Funny. The janitor at my elementary school was called “Smokey.” No idea why. He never smoked a day in his life.
I was a lifeguard my junior year in high school. Had to give mouth-to-mouth to Mrs. Beerman. She belched up a lung full of corned beef and chlorine. I haven’t been in a pool since.
I spent two summers operating the Whack-the-Cats at the Emmet County Fair
You know, when I was 15, I had a summer job installing carpets for Albert Kodagolian on Lake Charlevoix. Horrible job hot, indoors, forced to listen to “The Gambler” on 8-track while the rest of the world was at the beach. Three days into the job, I knew I had to quit. I asked my father for adviceAll he wanted to know was whether I’d given my word to Mr.Kodagolian that I’d work the summer. I told him I had. My father suggested I stick it out. I’d given my word. Worst eight weeks of my life. Until the last day. Mr. Kodagolian shows up at the jobsite, pulls me aside, and tells me that in 27 years, no kid has ever made it through the summer, gives me a bonus $40. The most valuable money I’ve ever made. A priceless lesson about life. Value loyalty above all else.
Well, [I want] another spin of the bottle in Melanie Reichman’s basement
Your cummerbund. Pleats up! You look like Bob Yoshimura in 8th-grade swing choir. It’s upside down!
You know, BJ Simpson and I started a lawn-mowing business in the summer of ‘72– bagging, hedging, the whole ball of wax.One day, I’m out rototilling Pat Hunt’s garden. I go in for a bottle of pop– must have been 110– and there’s BJ in the sunken living room, shoes off, feet up on the couch, eating a fried-bologna sandwich, watching Mike Douglas. Mike Douglas! Can you imagine? I quit that day….. Point is, I haven’t had a partner since
Sacrifice the bishop. Reykjavík, '72. God, I can remember it like it was yesterday. I was in Steven Bash’s rec room down in the basement, eating fried egg and bologna sandwich when he did it.... Bobby Fischer. It was game 13, move 50– rook takes bishop, B5. He sacrificed his bishop. That’s when Russia lost the Cold War. It was staggering. Spassky had no answer because he had no endgame, and neither do you.
The first time I ever smoked a cigar was with Marnie Petersen in fifth grade. Funny, little, bat-faced girl. I adored her.
I remember the name of the baker I stole the strawberry bismark from when I was 11 years old and his wife– Trudy Svoboda.
You know, this artist got his start with puppets. What is it about puppets? It’s the same with clowns. I’ll never forget a puppet show I saw when I was 5, maybe 6. Hansel and Gretel. Scared me to death. But it wasn’t the witch. It was the oven. Imagine an oven puppet. I don’t think I set foot in our kitchen for a month.
I haven’t had a babysitter since Brenda Gilroy. My God, pot pies, Lawrence Welk, bath time with Brenda. Still my perfect Saturday night.
Like Bergita Olofson in her parents' rumpus room on a Saturday night.
When I was 17 and heading off to the Naval Academy, I sent the most extravagant love letter to Sarah Ellen Winstead. She never replied. To this day, I remain convinced that the post office failed to deliver it, and that if your colleagues had simply done their jobs, the entire arc of my life might have been different. I might have been thinner and living in Maine.
Rosie Cavendish had a bulldog. Franklin, named after her great-uncle. Poor guy had eczema, dermatitis, seborrhea one skin condition after the next. The dog, not the uncle
I sometimes feel as if I should pay more attention to pop culture. Then I see this "Star Wars," featuring this giant in a bear costume piloting an aircraft and a little green guy swordfighting. And I say a silent prayer of thanks for Tolstoy's moral crisis. This green fellow is considerably too short to be effective in a swordfight.
I have to say, I would've done exactly the same when I was a kid. It's a ghost story creepy woods, rumors of corpses walking around in the dead of night.
As Old Man Quimby, my fencing instructor used to say "If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, oh, what a Christmas we'd have." My God I loved the foil.... "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." Ah, Quimby. The man was a walking aphorism.
This reminds me of our high-school production of "Guys and Dolls." A rousing rendition of "Fugue for Tinhorns.
I so wanted to be a scout– tying knots, the Pinewood Derby, and the campfire songs. Oh, those songs. I keep trying to explain to Dembe, but I’m no singer.

Hey! I remember a while back I read a fanfic of yours regarding twilight wings- the unofficial Raihan episode. In it their was an oc of yours, and I was wondering if you have any more? I like making oc's myself and it's fun to see other people's ideas and stories.
Hi there!  You have...opened the floodgates (in a good way). I have quite a few champion OCs. I’ll focus on the various champion OCs I have since I’ve mentioned this on my blog before the champions of Pokemon remain my favorite class of characters as they have so much potential as we’ve seen with Leon in SwSh. This is going to be a somewhat long post as I have 5 champions to talk about (plus there are pics here, most of them commissions from some very talented artists that I’ve tagged as I can’t draw)
Tumblr media
(There’s Marsha and her starter/ace Rosemary the Audino with @hayleyb100 ‘s character Richard. Thank you HayleyB for drawing this! And if you guys haven’t please check out her amazing art and stories)
I’ll start off with the OC you mentioned in your ask...Marsha (full name Marsha Miller). She’s the Alolan champion that we see in my Conviction, the Raihan twilight wings episode (also shameless plug for my fic). Like many champions she’s a mixed type trainer, but she does have a slight preference for fairy types on her team. Unlike the SM/USUM protagonist, she actually hails from Unova but her family is military (her father used to serve under Lt. Surge before becoming a lieutenant himself) and so she’s lived in Unova, Kanto, and Alola. Before she ended up becoming Alola’s champion, she was content with being head of the cheer squad at her high school while in Kanto (before her family announced moving again and she was needless to say, quite upset at the prospect of throwing away her cheer captain title). Back when she lived in Unova, she would often stop by her grandparents herbalist shop to learn about various medicinal herbs.
I hint to this a bit in my Convictions fic when Marsha asks Raihan a question about him becoming champion elsewhere, but Marsha has a huge bout of imposter syndrome from being the first ever champion of Alola as she doesn’t feel like she measures up to the legends like Red or Blue or known superstar champions like Leon and Cynthia. A lot of her character growth comes after she wins the title as she learns to work with Kukui to help build up the Alola League and make it famous. Luckily she happens to be a pretty friendly, if somewhat reserved character making it easy for her to befriend the likes of Leon and Raihan (and she also gets them to be a couple). Both Leon and Raihan give her tips they’ve learned from being in Galar to help boost the reputation of the Alola League. Back in Alola she is good friends with Mallow, Plumeria and Mina as they often visit Mallow’s restaurant to eat and catch up. She ends up being a big sister friend to Gladion, Lillie and Hau (being in her late teens when she first met the kids) as well as Iris when she meets her at the champion’s conference.
Tumblr media
(Credit to @roseltheteacup for this amazing sugimori style artpiece of Calla. Please check out rosel’s artwork as well)
The next one is my probably my most well-developed champion OC and my version of Victor/Gloria...Calla Okoro. She’s the Sword Hero of Galar to go with Hop’s Shield Hero. Calla is a baby genius with an IQ of 162 (so she’d qualify for MENSA in the real world) and graduated college at the age of 12 with a degree in chemistry, a year before she ends up taking on the gym challenge. Her favorite type is poison and she decided that she would take on the gym challenge by using only Poison types, refusing a starter from Leon to train up her Budew and other poison types she found along the way.
Her knowledge of poison types would become very useful towards the end of the challenge and Eternatus awakening and possessing Leon , however this girl struggled so much at the beginning as the poison types she caught don’t really get good until they evolve. It was also a testament to having book knowledge of Pokemon and type advantages doesn’t equate to automatically winning a battle. She struggled especially at Kabu’s gym, resulting in her first official loss (outside of losing her second battle to Hop at Magnolia’s house due to his Rookidee being super effective against her Budew nicknamed Sabi). Calla is persistent though and patient so she worked with her team developing a killer toxic stall strategy (that helped her be the first person to take Leon down). As champion Calla uses her position to promote science and eventually goes back to school to get PhD, becoming the first Galar champion to also be a professor. When Calla is not doing Pokemon battles or giving science demos, she tends to enjoy doing backflip competitions with Gordie or rocking out at Piers’ concerts with Marnie and Hop and Bede (Bede will deny hanging out with them)
Tumblr media
(thank you RPG Picrew, I have yet to get official commissioned work of him done)
This is Jabari Revere, my Kalos champion OC and part of the Kalos 5. I’m still working on his backstory and personality as I replay Pokemon Y (I tend to replay the games for my champion OCs to build up their teams and get a sense for the personality). Jabari is a water type champion who enjoys his days swimming in the ocean and surfing on his Mantine, nicknamed Monterey. Like Serena from the anime he is a bit at odds with his mother Grace for wanting him to take up the family tradiiton of Rhyhorn racing. However unlike anipoke!Serena, he did have a goal of training water type Pokemon with the aim of becoming a water type champion just like Wallace from Hoenn. Jabari is definitely an easy going fellow, which helps him befriend Serena, Tierno, Trevor and Shauna as well as Grant and Clemont. Unlike my Galar champion Calla, he is more willing to use Pokemon other than water types, such as when he fought Korrina at the Mega Evolution tower using the Lucario who was attracted to his aura, or when he rescued Yveltal from Team flare and let it get revenge on Lysandre
Tumblr media
(this piece was done by @snowythesoft aka ChibiGirl! Thank you again for this and also please check out her art as well)
Yes, you’re looking at a robot. His name is Valen and is actually my first non-self insert Pokemon OC. After watching the first Pokemon movie and seeing Mewtwo be a Pokemon trainer, and also after watching the Watson computer on Jeopardy, I came up with the idea of “what if someone made a robot as a Pokemon trainer”. Hence Valen, the world champion of my version of the Pokemon World
Created by Molayne and Sophocles at the request of Red and Blue as a new fixture for the battle tree, Valen quickly began to learn from the some of the strongest trainers how to battle (with a frequent opponent being Marsha as she needed someone who could challenge her in battle). Once he figured out how to consistently beat the likes of Red, Blue and Marsha in battle...it was a wrap. Valen travelled to every known region and soon became the undisputed most powerful trainer in the world defeating every last living champion. He even took on Leon, Cynthia and Red in a triple battle and won. Despite his absolutely monstrous skill Valen is an absolute sweetheart and always compliments his opponents in battle. He also loves bowties, with his first gift being the red bowtie he sports from Sophocles do not touch or harm that bowtie if you value your life, it’s one of the few things that will actually piss off this gentle giant of a robot.
Tumblr media
(credits to the VillainSona Picrew)
So this is my final non-self insert champion OC,  His Royal Highness Jack, Duke of Stow-On-Side. In a discord server and on some messages here on tumblr, I’ve described Jack as the unholy combination of Caillou and Jack the Ripper.  Jack hails from a disgraced family of aura guardians who learned that they could use their aura powers to create shadow Pokemon. 150 years prior to the main Sword and Shield story line his family managed to beat back the Hammerlocke Royal family (aka the great Raihan’s family) from Stow-On-Side and Ballonlea to claim the two towns for themselves. When Peony stepped down as champion Jack ended up taking the champion title. Now Jack is actually a legitimately powerful trainer without the need to shadowfy his Pokemon, but he does so anyway to ensure absolute control and to hopefully make his royal family the absolute rulers of Galar (his actions would years later inspire Sordward and Shieldbert, the Dukes of Motostoke). He even bribed gym leaders to be extra difficult on challengers he deemed to be a threat (so Leon, Raihan, Nessa and Sonia got hit hard with this).
Jack’s misdeeds are pretty vast. The reason why Sonia is so unconfident in her battling skills? Jack ambushed her in the wild area and destroyed her in a match while mocking her. Why does Leon have that perfect image as champion? He’s trying to build back the reputation the Galar league has after Jack nearly destroyed it’s rep on the world stage with his actions. Why are Leon and Sonia so insistent on you focusing on the gym challenge and leaving the problems to the adults? The adults during their gym challenge were either on Jack’s side or were actually useless against him and his shadow Pokemon. To quote my friends in an rp server I’m in “Jack is the absolute worst  So that’s all of the champion OCs I have. As I continue to write more fanfic will definitely see all of them pop up in various stories.

More headcanons for the boys +romance
Piers
Piers is secretly a sap for old movies. Black and white ones to be more specific. He not only finds them aesthetically pleasing, but also with their own charm. Theres a small theater in Spikemuth that exclusively airs vintage movies, and visits whenever he has time.
His and Marnies biggest bonding activity is hair night. She'll help him redye the white streaks in his hair(which is no small task). Piers will blow dry and straighten hers. They'll put on a bad movie from netflix, order take out and have a night.
Piers can play guitar. But it's more for personal use than anything. He finds it relaxing to just sit an play while he writes songs. It's only for very specific songs that he'll play in stage. They're usually the very emotional ones that mean a great deal to him. Every piers fan knows, if he's holding a guitar, the crowds tears will follow.
Ever see that video of a dog relaxing while his owner plays the pokemon theme on an acoustic guitar? That's Piers and his pokemon.
Obstagoon is like a big bratty dog. Always wants treats, always wants attention. And will whine when it does not get them. When it was a zigzagoon, it would give big pouty eyes for treats and table scraps, and it always worked on young piers. He was a chubby little thing back then.
When skuntank was a stunky, it was biter. Nothing was safe. Furniture, clothes, fingers. Piers always had little red mark's from the teething pokemon. A quarter of all his money always went to replacing toys Stunky had destroyed.
Romance
Piers has always been bashful around  people he genuinely likes. *coughraihancough* he'll do his damndest to play it off. But he's always been terrible at hiding a crush. Especially if he blushes around them. He's so pale any color on his face will be very evident.
Half the time he always assumes the other person has no interest in him. But he isn't dense enough to not be able to tell when he's being flirted with. He feels better talking to someone when he knows/feels like his attention is wanted. It makes him less nervous.
Isn't one for initiating pda, but is not opposed to it. He likes having his arm around his s/o shoulders though.
Has written breakup songs before. No you can't hear them. They're private and locked away in his desk. He has just enough self respect to not air his relationship drama on stage.
Play with his hair, he'll be putty in your hands.
Has never understood people who stay in relationships with someone who does not get along with their loved ones. Marnie is all Piers has, and if someone cannot get along with her or makes her uncomfortable, they are out. Plain and simple. Unless Marnie says it's ok to keep seeing them, Piers won't pick a relationship over his sister.
Piers is always busy with gym responsibilities or performances and practice. As fun as it can be to bring his s/o to events, his favorite date night activity is to stay home with them. He'll make them a nice meal, put on a movie and relax on the couch.
Is actually a big cuddle bug. He loves snuggling on the couch. His head on your lap. Holding them in bed. Piers is touch starved and needs attention, please give it to him.
Start giving him good luck kisses before a performance, it'll be his favorite thing.
Raihan
Raihan acknowledges he can be very vain at times. But the one being that out vains him at every turn is Duraludun. If it sees Raihan filming or taking a photo, it will butt in and try to take over the whole shot. It has become very good friends with the Rotom in his phone. When they get bored they'll stage a hostile takeover of his instagram andTwitter. It become a monthly thing.
Not so secretly a bookstagramer. Raihan always ends up in the vaults and libraries of Hammerlocke. He saw one of his gym trainers, Camilla, taking pictures of the books she was reading and asked about it. She showed him a lot of aesthetically pleasing pictures of books, and libraries, and artfully cluttered desk and wanted to try. It's not a secret, but he does try to keep it separate from his hyper dragon man gym persona. Sort of business vs. Personal deal.
He dresses very well. Despite that more often than not he is in his favorite hoodie and gym uniform, when Raihan wants to dress up,damn son. He spends a lot of time online and is friends with Nessa and Sonia, he knows what's up in fashion and what looks good on him.
He and Gordie are the Meme Team. Everytime they have a conversation it will descend into quoting and reenacting vines. Only the younger gym leaders know what they're saying, they just refuse to encourage it. Except Alister. Hes a little kid that hears these cooler older dudes being funny and try to join them. Hes they're third member now. Poor Bea, she couldn't save him.
Out of all his pokemon, he's had flygon the longest. Raised it from a trapinch when he was a kid. That's why he wears that orange hat/headband thing, to honor his buddy.
Takes very good care of his skin. Partially because his face is always on camera, but also because his skin dries out easily and always need moisturizers. Nessa showed him all her favorite brands. He likes chilling out with a face mask, it's very soothing.
Romance
Raihan is a very confident, attractive, and friendly guy, he pretty much never has trouble getting a date.
That being said, sometimes he gets a bit too confident and ends up coming on too strong for some people.
This was definitely a problem in his teen years. He would just say the wrong thing with all the bravado he could muster and whoever he liked would scoff and walk away. He grew out of it, but it could be downright painful to watch young Raihan flirt.
Raihan is pretty laid back and generally takes rejection very well. Only when it was someone that he REALLY liked and had for awhile is when he gets truly upset. And when that happens he just hangs out at home for a bit or go out to the wild area, Spends time with his pokemon. Generally just wants be alone with his thoughts till he can bounce back.
When Raihan is dating someone, he surprisingly doesn't want to post about it for awhile. If they're still together after a few months is when he'll post selfies and cute couple pictures. He's learned the hard way how certain types of fans will react to him dating, and once they go public they wont have as much privacy. He likes to have that grace period of just being a couple without all eyes on them. But once that initial hurtle is over. Its photo city with him.
Is a big fan of "good morning" and "good night" texts. Also loves falling asleep over the phone when you can't spend the night together.
Honestly just text him a lot in general. A lot of gym things take up a large chunk of his time. Text that you miss him, or a picture of one of your pokemon sleeping on the couch, ask if he wants pizza later. Literally anything will brighten his day. He'll definitely return the favor.
Loves taking s/o out on the town. From league events, to friends parties, or just dinner and shopping. He wants to show them off. If you aren't comfortable with it, tell him sooner rather than later.
Is a giant tease. Loves to whisper whatever he can in your ear or send something risque over text to make you blush and then act completely innocent.
Leon
Has a room in his house just for Hop. Hop used to love visiting him every summer in Wyndon. Otherwise he would never see his brother. The visits got less frequent over the years. But Hop always has a place to stay with Leon.
After he had been champion for a couple years was when the merch train really got rolling. Tshirts, posters, stationery. You name it, it had Leon's face on it. As a kid he lost his shit over it and but over the years got less enamored. Although he does have a soft for the Leon toys. After all, who doesn't want an action figure or doll made of them?
Leon does his best to keep himself and his pokemon in shape and on a daily routine. That all gets thrown out the window when he visits home or family comes to see him. All his pokemon get treated like spoiled house pets. FromHaHaxrus  being a test taster for his mom to Hop flying around the neighborhood with charzard. Its takes over a week to get everything back on track after.
Charzard is obviously the leader of all the pokemon next to Leon. All the newer pokemon always look up to them for guidance and charzard is always friendly and helpful. They are also very fond of kids, it loves events like visiting schools or children's hospitals. He's like a drampa in charzard skin.
Haxorus is a diva. She loves attention and shiny things. She adores Sonia because when she was just an Axew, Sonia always gave her a little trinkets, like sparkly hair pins or a pretty rock. She also loves to be complimented, Leon always calls her his pretty girl. Theres pile of shiny stuff that no one is allowed to touch at Leon's house unless she allows it.
Whenever leon visits home, he always tries to go out with his old friends. Usually they have a few drinks at the local pub and have dinner. Oddly enough, Leon can get lost going next door, but can stumble home no problem when he's drunk. Go figure.
Ever heard of a sneaker head? Well Leon is a hat head. Whenever his favorite brands come out with a new hat design, you can bet your ass he'll be line for the release or online waiting for the listing to show up. The wall of caps at his moms house is but a humble sample of his collection.
Played softball as a kid. He throws his pokeball the way he was taught to pitch. As a kid leon liked to think if he couldn't be a trainer, he would like the be a baseball player.
Romance
Leon can't flirt for shit, and I mean this in the nicest way possible. His idea of breaking the ice is asking if you want a battle.
Leon was especially hopeless as a teenager. He spent so much time with the league, an environment of mostly adults, being around anyone his age was a damn miracle.
Sonia and Raihan would always take him to parties to socialize. But anytime someone tried to make a move on him, Leon would just think they were being friendly.
Raihan has always been his wingman.
Raihan: My friend over there thinks you're cute. *points at the damn champion waving awkwardly from across the room.*
Even Now, they still do this. And it still has 50/50 shot of working.
Has been in a couple relationships, but both have ended badly. They were ultimately with Leon for his title and not him.
Leon wants to be with someone, he just finds it's harder for him than he realised. When he does find someone, it's going to be a bit of a slow go to know them and be sure they aren't using him. When that wall breaks he going to be the happiest man around.
Leon is affectionate and will always find a way to touch his s/o. From a kiss on the cheek, to random hugs, to lightly touching their back as he passes.
This man has never half Assed anything in his life. Leon's a go big or go home kind of guy, so when he wants to make a romantic gesture, he'll put his all into it. From picnics on the stadium field, to a special camping spot in the wild area, dinner on the top floor of the battle tower. Even just flowers will be from the best florist in in the city. Leon wants to show how much he loves you and nothing but his 110% best effort will do.
As extra as Leon is, it's always the small quiet moments that get him. He'll wake up early and see his s/o peacefully asleep, and he'll just melt and stay there for awhile.
You could try to make his favorite meal and burn everything and he'll still be touched. It's very much the thought that counts for Leon, because it shows you care enough to put the effort in.
King of cheesy lines. Will say the lamest pick up lines or something he heard in a movie to try and make you laugh. It usually works because he always says it with a straight face.

Pokemon Sw/Sh Hug Headcanons
my first time actually posting headcanons, just thought of this and it made me happy
(under the cut b/c it’s pretty much all important/recurring characters minus Swordward and Shieldbert b/c,,,i don’t like them)
Hop: Quick, tight hugs. He’s hyper, and doesn’t have time to have a long hug with one person, he wants to hug everyone right NOW! Only exception to this is if he’s comforting someone, or he’s being comforted himself. In times like that, he’ll just let the hug last a bit.
Leon: TIGHT HUGS, AND BEST HUGGER IN GALAR!! Who do you think Hop gets his tight hugs from? Lee will squeeze you, pick you up in the hug, and just hold on for a moment (i just really need a hug from lee, i think we all do). Will keep an arm around you after the hug, just to keep you close.
Sonia: Gentle hugs, usually a brief side hug. Unless you’re Nessa close to her, then it’s a full on hug, tight and with a kiss on the cheek. Pulls away so she can look at you and talk, but keeps her arms around you.
Professor Magnolia: She’s a grandma! Of course she gives good hugs! Very gentle since she’s old and kinda frail, if you squeeze her she’ll probably laugh, or demand you let go. Could go either way.
Bede: Oh, this bastard. He’d act like he hates hugs, like he’s too good for them, above some stupid show of affection...But as soon as someone he can tolerate hugs him, he doesn’t want them to let go. Loose hugs, just puts his arms around the other person gently. However, if the other person squeezes him, he’ll squeeze back tighter. He’s not losing to them in this “who can hug tighter” game.
Marnie: Very gentle hugs. She’s gotten confident since she started the Gym Challenge, but is still pretty timid. Basically just a shy kid/teen that feels kinda awkward with hugs, but also kinda likes them and wishes there were more chances to hug people (totally not speaking from experience here).
Chairman Rose: Gladly gives fans hugs, and accepts hugs if he has time...Usually he’s too busy though, having Oleana pull him away from anyone that wants a hug. His hugs are quick but firm, usually patting the other person on the back.
Oleana: Not a hugger. But if she does let someone hug her, she’s very light with her hugs. Just a quick embrace, probably just uses one arm, not even a full-on hug. If she’s hugged unannounced, she just calls for security. Do not hug her if she doesn’t explicitly tell you she’s okay with it (i mean, same goes for anyone tbh).
Milo: YOU ALREADY KNOW THIS BOY GIVES 10/10 HUGS. Do you see his arms? Those arms probably feel like pure comfort and affection. He HUGS his pokeball when he Dynamaxes, so I imagine he will hug you on sight. How dare you enter his line of vision and not prepare for a bone-crushing hug. Definitely pats the other person’s back, kisses their head, and lets the hug last a while, squeezing real tight before letting go (Piers and Rai may be my big faves, but Milo gives off Amazing Hug Energy).
Nessa: Kinda like Sonia, she gives gentle hugs. A bit firmer than Sonia, though. She’ll rest her head on the other person’s if they’re shorter, or rest her head on their chest if they’re taller. Gentle as heck.
Kabu: Grandpa time. Gives quick hugs, patting the other person’s back/shoulder before letting go. If you’re close to him, he probably hugs a bit longer and tighter (guess you could call it a warm hug??).
Allister: TIMID. Do NOT try hugging this boy, he’ll get uncomfortable. If he initiates a hug, he’s very gentle, and still extremely unsure. Hug back, but GENTLY. Don’t squeeze! He WILL get upset, and Gengar WILL come out to defend his trainer! Really comfortable with the other gym leaders, though. Will occasionally run to Melony, Bea, or Raihan for a hug.
Bea: Also not the biggest fan of hugs, but if you ask her for one, prepare for a tight hug. Will make you regret hugging her, squeezes until your back cracks.
Opal: Another grandma, but different hugger. Picky with who she hugs, and when she does hug someone it’s usually light. She’s frail, but don’t underestimate her. Will trick you with a hug sometimes, gentle at first...But will squeeze the HELL out of you...Just because she can. Worst part: You never know which hug you’ll be getting. Loves keeping people guessing.
Melony: For an ice type user, she give the warmest hugs. Very snug grip, pretty much cradles the other person in the hug. Will reassure the person she’s hugging if they need it, or just ask how they’re doing. If someone needs a hug, she’ll be there right after Lee. Her battle style is brutal, but her hugs are so, so gentle.
Gordie: Oh, you want a hug? Sure, he doesn’t mind hugging a fan! Gives pretty tight hugs, pretty quick ones too, definition of “bro hug”. Pats the other person’s back, will ruffle their hair when they pull away (he has like 4 siblings, he’s pretty skilled at hugging).
Piers: Big fave time. He has a lot of fans, and a little sister, so he’s become pretty comfortable with hugs over time. Quick hugs for fans, tighter and longer hugs for Marnie. If you’re close to him, he gets pretty flustered with hugging. If someone else initiates the hug, he gets pretty shy and flustered, but hugs back gently. If HE initiates it, expect a tighter hug (nothing bone-crushing, but just very firm), a hug that’ll last a bit before he decides that it’s been long enough. He doesn’t seem like the kind to be into hugs and touching, but actually probably craves it.
Raihan: SECOND BEST HUGGER IN GALAR (since he’s Lee’s rival). Will hug you tightly, pick you up in the hug, spin you around, and not let go for a while. Also expect videos and selfies, he’ll let Rotom fly around to capture the hug. Has probably recorded himself hugging every gym leader + Lee by surprise, just hug-tackling all of them out of the blue to get a reaction. This resulted in Gengar chasing him, Opal lightly hitting his head with her cane/umbrella, a very flustered Piers, and Leon totally expecting it, and hugging even tighter.
Avery: Ew, a hug?? Fine, but only because he feels bad that you’ll never be as great as him. Another case like Bede, except he’s genuinely somewhat uncomfortable with hugs. Only seems truly comfortable with hugging Mustard and Honey. His hugs are pretty light, nothing extreme.
Klara: I know next to nothing about Klara except that she’s similar to Avery. But judging from that, I assume she’ll hug reluctantly, very light, and shove the other person away when she thinks it’s been too long. If someone asks for a hug, she’s smug about it. Why, of course you want a hug from her, she’s the best!
Mustard: For an old man, he gives stupidly tight hugs. Hugs like a Bewear, blames that on being the Dojo Master.
Honey: Quick and tight hugs, will gush over the other person like a proud mom if they’re close. Actually, even if she’s not close to someone/has just met someone she’ll hug them as a greeting.
Hyde: He’s probably more of a high-five person. Only hugs his parents, and high-fives/fist bumps everyone else. Super chill inventor kid.

Day 1: Sunrise
I’m finally attempting my first October prompt list thanks to @oc-growth-and-development ! Thank you for the list! What I wrote technically doesn’t have a sunrise in it, but reading the word made me think of how Marnie would wake up in this scene thinking the lights in the room was the sun.
This is also a very very rough draft. And very late. I never got around to posting this. I had work last night and today and tried writing this on my phone during my break. I’m not sure how many of the days I’ll be able to do, but here’s Day 1 on Day 2. I hope you enjoy!
Light. Blinding light.
That’s what Marnie saw as her eyes slowly opened. The minute they stared up at the light she squeezed them shut. Last  she remembered, it was dark and she had gone to follow Sarah and Mary to the field where they ran into that team of young superheroes and that particularly weird guy. Was the sun up? Was it morning now? Or was it all just some weird dream and she was going to wake up in her hotel room?
She tried opening her eyes again only to shut them once more. It hurt to look.
That was the other thing she became aware of: the pain.
There was a strong throbbing pain running through her head, down into her back. It was almost too hard to focus. Did she sleep funny?
When her eyes finally adjusted to the light, she tried turning her head, letting out a groan as she did. Moving made the pain worse.
Actually, now that she was moving she felt worse than just her head and back. Her whole body felt like it was on fire.
She tried sitting up on her elbows only to let out an inhale sharply and fall onto her back. Right back where she started.
She squinted through the pain and observed her surroundings. Her eyes widened, flickering back and forth as she took it all in.
She wasn’t in her hotel room. She was alone in an all-white room. She was alone, her roommates nowhere to be found. Looking down she saw she was wearing a hospital gown, lying in a hospital bed. Thankfully she wasn’t hooked up to any tubes, but it didn’t answer any of the thousands of questions bouncing around inside her head.
She pushed herself to sit up, crying out in pain as she did. Her heart was racing. Why was she in a hospital? How did she get there? What happened?
“Marnie?”
Marnie looked over and tears began to well up in her eyes as they landed on her mom’s worried face. “Mom,” she croaked out.
“Oh sweetheart, you’re awake!” her mom said, coming straight to her bed and running a hand over her hair. Behind her a doctor holding a clipboard slipped into the room.
“Wh-“ Marnie coughed, feeling how dry her throat was. “Why am I here? What happened? Where’s Sarah and Mary?”
The throbbing in her head was getting worse thanks to the fluorescent lights.
“You’re at Salem Memorial Hospital, Miss Hemmings,” the doctor spoke up, approaching the mother and daughter with a kind smile. “You were caught up in an accident that has kept you knocked out since around 10 o’clock last night.”
Marnie swallowed, lip quivering. “What kind of accident?” Looking at herself she didn’t see any blood, aside from a couple scrapes on her arms. And aside from the pain going through her body she didn’t think anything was broken. “What time is it?”
“It’s 5 am,” the doctor answered. He looked down at the clipboard, flipping through a couple pages. “As for what kind of accident, we aren’t sure. Kid Flash brought you here. He and some other sidekicks had been at the scene when it happened. Lucky you. We don’t know what would have happened if someone didn’t find you ‘til morning.”
Eyes widening, Marnie’s jaw dropped. “S-so…” She took a shuddering breath as images of last night flashed through her mind. “So that wasn’t a dream last night? That was all...real?”
The doctor’s face fell and he gave a small nod. “Yes, Miss Hemmings, everything that you went through last night did happen.”
Marnie’s head was reeling. She tried her best to think back to what happened. She remembered Kid Flash and the other sidekicks. The weird man in the suit, standing in the middle of the field. Him and the teens fighting. Then a bright light of blue enshrouding her. And Wally’s voice calling out to her.
“What about Wally? And-and-and that man in the field? That blue light that hit me? What happened?” she asked rapidly. Her heart was racing once more.
“Sweetheart, Wally wasn’t there,” Mrs. Hemmings said, trying her best to calm her increasingly anxious daughter. “It was just you in that field.”
“No, but I heard him. He called my name. I heard him!” Marnie whipped her head over to the doctor, her hair flying into her face accentuating the crazed look in her eyes. “What was that light then? It has to be why I’m here, right? It wasn’t normal.”
“We’re waiting to hear from the Justice Leagu-”
“The Justice League?” Marnie shouted. “Why are they involved? Do they know what that light was?”
A gasp came from her mom. “Marnie, you’re eyes!”
“What? What’s wrong with my eyes?”
“They’re glowing,”
“Miss Hemmings, you need to calm down,” the doctor urged, his own eyes widening as he looked at her.
“What’s wrong with me?” Marnie repeated, growing more frantic.
A crash sounded behind her, causing the brunette teen and her mom to shriek. Peering over her shoulders, Marnie saw the window next to her bed shattered. Shards of glass scattered across the floor beneath the window sill. Some had managed to land on her bed.
A pop came from above them. One of the tubes of fluorescent lights went out with a loud pop, plunging the room into near darkness.
“What’s happening?” Marnie was almost screaming now. The fact that the window shattered and the light broke couldn’t have been a coincidence.
“Marnie, oh my god!” her mom yelled out, hands flying to her mouth.
Marnie looked over at her mom, seeing the look of horror on her face. But what brought the look of horror on her own face was the weightlessness she felt all of a sudden. Slowly she looked down. Below her, a foot below her, was her bed. Marnie was floating. It wasn’t that high, but to her she felt like she was on the ceiling.
She screamed.

BrattyShipping Headcanons Pt. 5
Previous Posts: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4
Teen Years
- After returning from the Isle of Armor, Victor opts to keep his hair at its newly grown-out length. This decision is partially influenced by it giving him a new comfort device for his anxiety and partially because he quickly discovers he loves Bede playing with it when it’s loose.
- Bede also enjoys it more than they’d wish to admit to anyone but Victor. Their brain temporarily short-circuited at how good the new style looked on him when they first saw it. If the prior notes didn’t convince Victor to keep it grown-out, Bede’s flustered reaction most certainly succeeded.
- Bede is SUPER touch-starved. Against most people’s expectations, they revel in Victor’s naturally cuddly behavior, accepting hugs and snuggles whenever possible. However, neither of them are particular fans of PDA, still preferring to keep their relationship on a need-to-know basis (i.e. their friends, family, Pokemon, and pretty much every significant character from the game).
- Opal’s one problem with Victor is his general lack of style, as all he really looks for in clothing is comfort. She takes several opportunities to insist he accessorize and/or throw some more pink into his outfit. Bede eventually decides enough is enough and gives him a necklace with a pink, berry-shaped charm on it to appease her (and if they enjoyed watching Victor’s face light up, so be it).
- Victor’s heard enough of Opal’s unsolicited fashion advice to figure out his significant other’s ulterior motive, but loves the gesture anyway. He attempts to find an accessory-related gift for Bede as well, settling on a cozy scarf with a little Hattenna logo on the end. They now wear it as part of both their casual outfit and gym uniform.
- While Victor’s social anxiety and tendency to overthink still act up from time to time, he’s still fairly secure in their relationship. They don’t openly admit to it, but Bede is actually the most insecure in that regard. Their past mistakes and the numerous fans Victor has meld with their abandonment issues and leave them frequently worrying Victor will leave them just like everyone else.
- Bede begins to slowly integrate into the friend group formed by the Postwick Trio and Marnie. They’re still reasonably wary of Gloria, but they grow to tolerate each other. They find themselves on much better terms with Hop and never really had any problems with Marnie in the first place. Victor still regularly finds himself mediating, though it’s not much worse than when it was just the original three.
- It takes some digging, but Victor manages to find out when Bede’s birthday is (personal headcanon: August 13). They’ve never bothered to celebrate it since before they arrived at the orphanage and have mostly just written it off ever since. Since birthdays have always been fairly significant in Victor’s family (a trait he himself retains), he takes it upon himself to ensure Bede enjoys theirs from then on as well (usually with an outing or meal and a thoughtful gift as the basis).
- Bede finds out about the twins’ birthday (personal headcanon: February 27) through Gloria insisting they arrive in Postwick to celebrate. She admits she’s not the hugest fan of having them over at a party that’s half for her, but she recognizes her brother is head-over-heels for them at that point and how much it’d mean to him if they came. She makes it particularly clear that their attendance is not optional.
- Their first major fight since their relationship begins is spurred by Victor’s concerns that Bede is still holding him at arm’s length after over a year together (rarely expressing themselves beyond surface value, waiting for Victor to reach out more often than doing so themselves, etc). Bede attempts to play it off as being due to their busy schedule as a gym leader, but Victor sees through it fairly easily. He mostly just tries to accept it, but it leaves him feeling particularly dejected and things are fairly awkward for a bit afterward.
- After a couple weeks (and, of course, some “guidance” from Hatterene), Bede admits to holding Victor at arm’s length and starts to open up a bit about their trust and abandonment issues. Victor also apologizes for prying too much and reminds Bede that he’ll always be willing to listen when they need it.
- Bede ends up taking Victor to the post-season League banquet as their plus-one when both are around sixteen or seventeen. The media assumes he came as his sister’s (who is still very much the Champion) and that Bede invites Opal as theirs. In truth, her invitation never ceased to be issued even after she retired.
- Everyone else who is invited is well aware at this point. Raihan, Nessa, Leon, and Sonia end up debating the plausibility of their blatantly contrasting personalities working well together. Piers doesn’t bother to join in, but silently agrees with Nessa and Leon based on the stuff he’s heard about their dynamic from Marnie.
- Victor’s favorite part of the event is the amazing catering and relatively low-attention atmosphere. Bede’s favorite part is how amazing Victor looks in a suit.
- Bede and Gloria end up facing each other in the League Finals that year. When Victor goes to congratulate them afterward, the three are mobbed by press and he starts having a panic attack. Both his sister and significant other go into “angry protective mode” and attempt to angrily tell off the paparazzi.
- Gloria tries to lead the press away while Bede gets Victor into the locker room to calm down. They haven’t actually seen him in such a state since the opening ceremony of their League challenge (and even then it wasn’t this bad), mostly since he’d figured out methods to cope with his crowd-induced anxiety and misophonia by the time it would have acted up around them. They have no idea what to do for the most part, but their presence manages to help ground Victor enough to employ the calming techniques he’s had to learn over time.
- On their way out, Bede is still pissed at the paparazzi for rendering their boyfriend in such a state. Taking advantage of Hatterene’s particular skill-set, they covertly send her out to inflict them all with migraines in spite. Gloria notices from across the crowd; her respect for Bede doubles that day.
- By the time both finish growing, Victor is a couple inches taller than Bede. Their hair makes it seem closer than it actually is, but it’s still not the most drastic height difference.
- Bede eventually figures out how to incorporate their puffer coat into their gym uniform. But before that happens, they return to their locker room one day to find Victor waiting for them while bundled in it. They nearly have a cuteness-induced aneurysm.
- It’s around age seventeen when Bede learns that being nonbinary is a thing and immediately clicks with it. When they come out to Victor, he spends a full day researching gender-neutral terms to refer to them by online. He’s wary of calling them his “partner” in fear of it sounding too serious, but Bede personally approves of the term themselves.
- After growing incredibly accustomed to Victor making food for them, Bede attempts to surprise him by trying their own hand at cooking. While they have much less experience, he adores the thought they put into it and informs them that it’s surprisingly good for a first try. He offers to teach them some tricks he learned and cooking together ends up being a favorite activity of theirs from then on.
- Bede accidentally left the Vengeance Board up the first time Victor saw their room later that day. It was at that point when they realized how potentially creepy having a bunch of mementos of their boyfriend tacked to a corkboard labelled “vengeance” looked, but Victor thought it was adorable and took a picture (with a few playful snarks thrown in, of course).
- That was also the first instance of them sharing an actual bed (instead of the couch that one time), falling asleep cuddled in each others arms. They groggily bid each other good morning when they wake up, only for Opal to throw in a “good morning” of her own from her chair next to them. Just like the first instance, there was some screaming involved (and a couple empty threats on Bede’s part).
- Bede isn’t prone to using cutesy nicknames, while Victor’s nicknames for them are “Love” and “Sprite.” Hop once jokingly used the second one after seeing it as their contact name in Victor’s Rotom Phone. It took three whole minutes to fish him out of the river.
- Upon nearing his goal for gaining funds and cooking experience, Victor ultimately plans to open his restaurant in Ballonlea. The quaint, whimsical nature of the town makes it an ideal location for both his desired atmosphere and projected business (since large crowds are less likely in a smaller town, but the sights and gym challenge will attract enough customers).
- After showing Gloria, their mom, and Hop his notes to assure them he thought everything through, he brings up the idea to Bede. They’re caught off-guard at first, but after thinking it through with Opal’s help, they inform Victor that they want to help with the preparations when their schedule allows and move in above the restaurant with him when its ready.
Still not done! Like hell I’m missing out on writing the domestic fluff!

Disney+ Halloween Movies for Kids: The Best Family Films to Watch This Spooky Season
https://ift.tt/34Fe5tZ
It’s the season for thrills and chills, but if you’re planning to watch movies with your kids as Halloween approaches, you might not be looking for the scariest horror films. Luckily, there’s plenty of family friendly fare on Disney+ to add some spooky to your Halloween season.
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
When you’re looking for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow on Disney+, it doesn’t come up on its own. The short from 1949 was released in tandem with another short based on the Wind in the Willows. The combined films were released under the full title of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and that’s exactly what you have to type in to get it to come up.
The story, which is based on Washington Irving’s original text, tells of the ill-fated romance between schoolmaster Ichabod Crane and Katrina van Tassel in 1790 Sleepy Hollow, New York. When Katrina’s unofficial fiance discovers that Ichabod is superstitious, he tells the story of the Headless Horseman—and Ichabod, on his ride home, encounters a pumpkin headed spirit. The next morning, Ichabod is nowhere to be found; a shattered jack-o-lantern and his hat are all that remain. While some younger viewers may find the tale distressing (Disney didn’t pull punches back in the 1940s), those with a taste for ghost stories will happily enjoy their shivers.
Trick or Treat
What happens when Huey, Dewey, and Louie come to Uncle Donald’s for trick or treating? Donald’s full of tricks! Luckily, Witch Hazel takes pity on the nephews and helps them get their just desserts. This 1952 classic is only nine minutes long, so it’s a great short to open your Halloween family movie night! You can also pair it with the 1937 “Lonesome Ghosts” (Mickey, Donald, and Goofy in a haunted house), or the creepy 1936 short, “Thru the Mirror,” an Alice in Wonderland inspired Mickey short.
Mr. Boogedy
This 1986 Made for TV Disney Sunday Movie may bring back childhood memories for parents! In it, a family moves to a spooky New England town only to discover that their house is haunted. The two Halloween-loving parents are inclined to believe that the hauntings are just a practical joke from the creepy old man who runs the town’s historical society.
The kids, on the other hand, are determined to get the evil ghost—a 300-year-old pilgrim whose spurned love caused him to sell his soul to the devil for a magic cloak—out of their house once and for all. With kid heroes (and the creative use of a ghost-fighting vacuum cleaner), this one might be so bad that it’s good.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Yes, technically this is a Christmas film, but there’s not a lot that’s Halloweenier than Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, and the monsters of Halloween Town taking over Christmas.

Christmas Movies on Disney+ Streaming Guide

Released in 1993, this stop-motion animated film from producer Tim Burton was originally deemed “too scary” to be released under the Disney label, but in the years since, it’s become a favorite, especially of older kids and their parents. The characters Jack Skellington and Sally have plenty of reach beyond the original film too, appearing on t-shirts and other accessories worn to celebrate this time of year.
Coco
Coco isn’t officially a Halloween movie, either, but it’s a great way to celebrate both Hispanic Heritage Month (which runs until Oct. 15, 2020) and Dia de los Muertos. Miguel just wants to play music, but in his family, it’s forbidden. When he steals a guitar from a crypt on Dia de los Muertos, he finds himself transported to the land of the dead, surrounded by the beautifully painted skeletons of his dead relatives.

Putting the Christmas Back in The Nightmare Before Christmas
By Tony Sokol
Unwilling to promise he’ll never play music again, Miguel goes on the run, helped by a scoundrel, Hector, to reach the one person Miguel believes will get him home. This Pixar film hits all the right notes when it comes to family, to music, and to learning how to accept and love people for who they are. It also has alebrijes: beautifully colorful magical animals that assist both the dead and the living through their trials.

Possibly one of the most hotly debated family friendly Halloween films, this cult favorite of the 1990s features three sibling witches who were executed in 17th century Salem (so the witch trials were justified in this world?). But before their deaths, they declare they’ll be resurrected if a virgin lights a magic candle.

Hocus Pocus 2 Finds Director
By Kayti Burt
Flash forward 300 years and a teenage boy finds a way to set them free. There are a lot of ribald jokes throughout, likely to go over the heads of young viewers, and the sisters really are wicked. (Early on, they suck the life out of a little girl and doom her brother to being an immortal black cat.) While for some families, this is a hard pass, for many others, it wouldn’t be Halloween without watching Bette Middler put a spell on you!
Escape to Witch Mountain
There are no actual witches in Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) and its sequels. Instead the first film revolves around two foster children, Tony and Tia, with special powers. When an “uncle” appears to bring them home, they realize he’s a villain who wants to use them, and they escape. Over the course of their adventures, they discover their true heritage: they’re aliens.
Tony and Tia’s adventures continue in Return from Witch Mountain, and the 2009 remake of the first film, Race to Witch Mountain, stars Dwayne Johnson as a cab driver who helps the two alien children (renamed Sara and Seth) to their destination.
Frankenweenie
Another Tim Burton stop-motion film, Frankenweenie tells the story of boy Victor Frankenstein, who resurrects his pet dog, Sparky, but is then blackmailed into telling other neighborhood children the secret behind reanimating their pets. The black and white animation and the somewhat creepy content makes this one better suited to tweens than the younger set, and parents will enjoy the homages to classic horror films in Burton’s storytelling.
Halloweentown Series
If you’re looking for a movie marathon, you might check out the Debbie Reynolds-led series of Disney Channel originals about a town full of witches, demons, skeletons, and goblins. The first, Halloweentown, came out in 1998. In it, 13-year-old Marnie is incredibly frustrated because her mother won’t let her celebrate Halloween. As it turns out, it’s because Marnie’s mother and grandmother (played by Reynolds) are witches; Marnie’s mother wants Marnie to be a regular mortal, but her grandmother wants to train her before she loses her powers forever.

The Unmade Beetlejuice Sequels
By Simon Brew
After overhearing their argument, Marnie is determined to get to the bottom of her history, so she follows her grandmother back to Halloweentown where she gets embroiled in the quest to find a talisman that will undo a demon curse on the townspeople.
In Halloweentown 2: Kalabar’s Revenge, Marnie, now with two years of witch training under her belt, has to undo a warlock’s plot to trap everyone in the mortal world as the creatures of their Halloween costumes. Halloweentown High features Marnie bringing several Halloweentown teens, disguised as humans, to her mortal high school, posing as exchange students from Canada. In the fourth film, Return to Halloweentown, Marnie (played by a different actress) decides to attend Witch U in Halloweentown for college.
There’s not a lot of serious food for thought in these, but the scare factor isn’t terribly high, and it’s notable as a Disney Channel Original movie series that ran for four films.
Monsters Inc.
For the younger set, there’s nothing better than Monsters, Inc. to bring shivers and giggles together in one film. This is the story of two roommate monsters, Sully and Mike, who work together at the scare factory. One day they find their lives derailed when a human child (supposedly poisonous to monsters!) comes through one of the closet doors that monsters travel through to scare children. They’re determined to get her back safely, with no one the wiser, and end up uncovering not only a huge conspiracy, but a new source of energy for monsters.
The prequel Monsters University hits some of the same scare and humor notes (with a great lesson on embracing who you are, and the skills you have, rather than trying to become something you’re not). If you’ve only got time for one, though, pick the original, and be prepared to hear your kids say “Mike Wazowski” over and over…

Tea Witch Tony
So here’s a little thing that I started writing forever ago and never finished or posted -- a magic tea shop AU based loosely on the gorgeous witch Tony art @hello-shellhead has posted in the past, and the Miss Marni’s Teahouse stories by reddit user sleepyhollow_101 on r/nosleep.
The cafe's called "Maria's", and from the outside it looks like the kind of overly homey, commercially southern joint that Rhodey would normally avoid at all costs. But the rain's starting to trickle down the back of his neck in icy fingers, and the shop looks warm and dry at least, and best of all, open at this late hour.
A bell tinkles when he opens the door, and again when it closes, and he stands dripping on the doormat for a moment, just soaking in the wholesome firelit warmth of the place. It smells like cinnamon and apple and tea and beeswax, and the whole shop just glows a kind of warm amber that whips the chill away from Rhodey's cheeks and ears like they were never cold.
"Can I get you something?"
The man behind the counter is a stark contrast to the shop's interior. Rhodey would have expected a plaid-clad teen or an older woman in a gingham apron, but the man is about his age. He has wild, artfully styled hair, an immaculate goatee, and is wearing a black t-shirt, grease-stained jeans, and the kind of smirk that could cause traffic accidents.
"Maybe a towel?"
The man's electric blue eyes sparkle invitingly and Rhodey suppresses the urge to smile for no reason. "Yes, please. And something warm to drink."
"Hang your jacket on the fireguard and I'll see what I can do." The man disappears into the kitchen and Rhodey tries to stamp the street grime off of his boots before picking his way past mismatched tables to the fire cheerily crackling at the back. He's only just finished hanging his jacket over the fireguard and leaning the wet side of his pack against the black iron rails when the waiter reappears with an enormous fluffy towel in one hand and a soot-marked kettle in the other.
"Here," he hands Rhodey the towel and hangs the kettle on a hook that swings in over the fire. "Sorry, the electric kettle's in pieces in the kitchen. This shouldn't take long though."
His hands have black stains around the nails, Rhodey notices, and rough callouses that look like they belong on a mechanic or a blacksmith more than they do on a cafe waiter. In fact, the man looks almost more out of place in this cozy feminine cafe than Rhodey feels.
Rhodey dries himself as best he can without taking off any more clothes, while the man bustles around behind the counter.
"So," the man says, "what brings you out in the rain at nine at night?"
"A cancelled flight," Rhodey tells him. "After a very long string of flights."
"Ah." The man ducks down behind the counter. His voice continues, a little muffled. "And they didn't put you up in a  hotel for the night?"
"They did. I needed to stretch my legs. I got a little lost. It's been a long time since I was last in New York."
The man brings tray over bearing a small teapot, a heavy mug, and a plate with two slightly burnt cookies. He sets it on the table nearest the fire and—moving with a fluid grace that Rhodey can only admire without a trace of envy—retrieves the steaming kettle from the fire and pours water into the teapot.
"Let that steep for five minutes and then drink it."
"What is it?"
"Just a little something that should warm you up and ease those tired muscles." He smiles disarmingly and Rhodey smiles back. "If you don't like it, I have a selection of other teas you can choose. I'll be in the kitchen."
Rhodey sits in the sturdiest of the mismatched chairs and watches the man walk away.
"Oh," the man calls back to him. "Sorry about the burnt biscuits. My assistant isn't the greatest cook, but I promise they taste just fine."
Rhodey picks one up and takes a cautious nibble. They don't measure up to Mama Rhodes' cinnamon cookies—nothing ever does—but they're certainly edible. He basks in the warmth of the fire until the time comes to pour the tea and take a cautious sip.
It's delicious—herbal and not overly sweet, with a hint of aniseed that tickles the back of his nose—and warms him from the inside immediately. The stiffness in his legs and back melts away by the time he's drunk half the mug, and by the time he's finished the mug even the tension headache he's been nursing for two days has vanished. He pours the remainder of the small pot into the mug and tries not to practically inhale it. He doesn't remember ever feeling this relaxed, especially not after three days of hopping from flight to flight and sleeping on airport chairs. A feeling he can only think of as wellbeing suffuses him. When he closes his eyes he can almost imagine that he's at home in his Mama's kitchen, full of her amazing home cooking and the joy of being with family.
"Here I found a street map in back."
Rhodey opens his eyes and realises more time has passed than he'd noticed. The fire has burned lower, and the mug in his hands is now chilly, the dregs quite cold.
"Sorry," he says. "I must have dozed." But his back doesn't hurt like it should after falling asleep in a chair.
The man grins. "It's fine. But I do need to close up."
He hands Rhodey the street map. There's a little sharpie'd teacup drawn on exactly where Rhodey suspects Maria's sits. He can see the hotel only a handful of blocks away.
"Thank you," he says.
He gathers his jacket and bag and heads to the till, the man meeting him from the other side of the counter. He pays for the tea and biscuits, and impulsively grabs a small box of Ceylon displayed next to the till. His Mama always liked Ceylon.
"See you next time," the man says as he  holds the door for Rhodey.
Rhodey grins back at him. "Next time."
He hears he snick of the lock when the door closes behind him and starts the long trudge through the drizzle back to his hotel. Somehow, despite the rain and the late hour and the chilly rain, he feels warm and content. He glances over his shoulder at the little cafe, still glowing warmly amongst the dark shopfronts, and vows to himself to visit it again the next time he's in New York.
---
He doesn't get a chance to visit Maria's before his next deployment—thankfully on US soil at Edwards, he's had enough of foreign sand for the moment—but he tells his Mama all about the shop and to his surprise the first parcel he receives from her contains four little paper bags of tea, and a note written in a neat draftsman's hand.
To James,
I hope you don't mind the familiarity. Your lovely mother asked me to write down some instructions for the blends I sent you. Three you can drink anytime, the other is a night time blend only. Please let me know how you find them.
Rhodey checks the packets to find them labelled in the same hand. "Soothe" and "sleep" smell similar to the pot he had at Maria's. "Focus" and "energy" smell like black tea, but with different spicy smells. Rhodey grins. They all smell delicious.
He reads the neatly listed instructions for brewing each blend, and then flips the page to find still more written.
I hope you'll come in again next time you're in New York. Your mom said you're an MIT graduate. Maybe we could share notes on Professor Carmichael?
Tony
Proprietor, Maria's Tea House
What exactly is an MIT graduate who'd taken Carmichael's advanced mathematics class doing running a cafe, Rhodey wonders. At least I finally have a name for the tea shop guy. He puts the letter aside and unpacks the rest of his Mama's parcel. Under the requisite new socks she always sends he finds what he'd been hoping for—a Tupperware full of cinnamon cookies.
He takes the cookies and the paper bag of "focus" tea with him to do his reports. He's got enough paperwork backed up to wallpaper the mess with. If the coffee doesn't work at keeping him on track, maybe Tony's tea will.
The tea is smoky, strong, and has just the slightest hint of vanilla to it. Rhodey brews it in a coffee plunger he finds at the back of the cupboard under the coffee machine—left by some serviceman who prefers French press to freshly perked. It works in a pinch to brew tea and Rhodey settles in with the pot at his elbow and his paperwork spread over his desk and knuckles down. The tea works a kind of magic that even a double espresso doesn't seem to manage anymore and Rhodey finds himself burning through forms without hesitation or distraction. He doesn't finish all his paperwork—he's not some kind of miracle worker—but by the time he has to move on to his next task for the day he has cut the mountain down to a manageable size to tackle tomorrow. He stretches the crick out of his neck and hides the tea away in his footlocker, smiling to himself as he remembers the letter and the invitation to visit Maria's next time he's in New York.
