i would so move farther up north since rent is cheaper and there’s more nature but the issue is that i don’t have a fucking car (and am also only a g1 driver and barely even practicing my driving anymore) therefore the commute to both school and work (i’ll probably end up finding work in toronto and surrounding areas) will be 1-2 hrs and a nightmare.
so then i’m like well maybe i should stay in toronto and find something to rent here or in the gta, but then you have 1 bedrooms costing $2,500 the least and basements around that same ballpark, and i don’t want to live in a basement! and i don’t want to live in toronto either anymore!
so i’m like ok let’s not go super up North like “cottage county” Barrie, simcoe, etc but maybe Newmarket, aurora, or even whitchurch-stouffville which is also like 30-40 mins away up North BY CAR !!! so i still need a fucking car because relying on public transport is impossible; and then i see that the rent there is still the exact fucking same as it is in toronto, if not slightly less.
fuck this for real ❤️

I was thinking of possible career paths for Sara after Hillerska, and I could totally see her as an equine veterinarian. Then she could get paid to be around horses all day long. I’m not sure how long veterinary school takes in Sweden. I presume in order to specialize as an equine veterinarian, you’d need to do a postgraduate followship working in an equine-centred veterinary practice.
So it would be a number of years before she was qualified, but it would be her dream job, I suspect. And we know Sara’s smart and a high achiever. That’s how she got into Hillerska. She totally has the drive to become not only a veterinarian, but a specialist.
I was talking to my colleague J. recently about her and her family’s trip to the UK this summer. They stayed a few days with her first cousin, who is a specialist equine veterinarian just outside of Newmarket. Newmarket being the centre of British horse racing. I’m sure there’s a similar town in Sweden.
Racehorses are very expensive toys for very rich, very bored people. Owners will spend a lot of money on veterinary care for their investment. And the trainers (since the owners don’t actually train the horses themselves, they farm them out to professional trainers) are more than happy to get the equine vet out, and pass on the bill to the owner. They need to make sure the owner’s investment doesn’t lose its value.
J.‘s cousin also helps out when he can with a horse sanctuary near Newmarket. Because people who are into owning or training horses as a business often don’t give a fuck about what happens to a horse that’s too old or too injured to compete any longer. I don’t think he gives the sanctuary his work strictly pro bono. They have to pay for the medicine and other supplies, but he doesn’t bill them for his labour.
Apparently when J. and her family were visiting this summer, her cousin said the people who run the sanctuary are a nice change of pace from trainers and multimillionaire owners. The staff and volunteers at the sanctuary are all horse lovers who are trying to make the final years of broken-down horses peaceful and happy. They’re not in it for glory or money, because the horses who end up with them can’t compete.
And yeah, I’m sure there are good racehorse trainers who aren’t just in it for the money, who love horses and want to make working with horses their career. But it sounded like from what J. said like there are some less noble trainers as well. And apparently her cousin has never met a race horse owner he didn’t take an instant dislike to.
But equine veterinarians make excellent money, charging whatever the market will bear to ensure some Saudi prince has fun with his new toy racehorse. And of course, the trainers don’t mind calling out the vet at the slightest hint of ill-health or injury, because the owners are paying the bills.
So the racehorse owners and trainers are inadvertently subsidizing J’’s cousin’s work with the horse sanctuary. Because if he wasn’t charging them through the nose, he couldn’t afford the pro bono work with the sanctuary.
I could totally see Sara Eriksson as a specialist looking after the veterinary needs of racehorses or show jumping horses, and charging the owners and trainers vast amounts for her formidable professional expertise. Then spending lots of time pro bono at a horse sanctuary. Because she doesn’t love winning, she just loves horses.

For a period of time after graduate school, after my now-husband and I had moved back to the New England seacoast following a brief stint in Seattle, we would drive the twenty minutes or so from our Maine home across the state line, to the neighboring town of Newmarket, to sit in silence inside the apartment of a poet we knew who played the banjo and now makes wooden coffins and coffee tables and chairs.
We called it quiet time.
There were no rules except that you had to be quiet. You could sit or stand or move or write or draw or stare or sleep. But you couldn’t make noise.
After, we would sometimes get breakfast at a now defunct restaurant inside the converted mill building that sits along the Lamprey River. We spoke during breakfast, about poems and music and potatoes.
I don’t sit in silence with others much anymore, but I’ll only make home fries with duck fat now.

468. More Venom Line (1992-1996)
Tumblr media
(the OG Venom Line post)
Tumblr media
I love the shout out to Chrissie. Stay in school.
Tumblr media
Okay, so I work at a library, and maybe things were different in 1993, 1994, but how did someone steal books out of a drop off box. We had a really old drop off box at the branch closest to my house up until recently, and even then there was no way you were sticking your hands inside it.
(Willow Oaks was my library when I was growing up in Hampton! )
Tumblr media
(the week after:)
Tumblr media
Remember when having a ~gold card~ was a big deal?
Tumblr media
What kind of venom line call is this?! Was she a bad driver? Why am I imagining her driving down Warwick Blvd in Newport News going 25 mph during morning rush hour?
Tumblr media
I want to travel back in a time machine and go back and see this lady SO BAD.
Tumblr media
I'm totally getting Murder She Wrote / Jessica Fletcher vibe, even if Jessica Fletcher wasn't a hag.
Tumblr media
I'm just amazed someone went to Newmarket Fair Mall on a Saturday night. Even back in 1993 that place was dead.
Tumblr media
In case you missed it, here's a brief history of Cross Colours.
Tumblr media
This person would absolutely hate Link from Good Mythical Morning
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel like the first number I was ever taught to call, you know outside of 911, was the time? You know, if it wasn't for our cell phones, people would've been calling that date and time number all the time when everything was shut down in the early days of COVID. We all remember the video where the news guy told us what day of the week it was.
Tumblr media
well, yeah, of course us Barney bashers were at home watching Bart.
I FEEL the person venting about the professional community college students. I attended and worked at a community college, and we had people who stayed for y e a r s. I don't meant the normal two years, I mean like six years.

Finally, some Christmas ones. 'Cuz that's right around the corner.

Challenges with Commercial Food Audited Facilities and Food Inspection Pest Control Services
Tumblr media
For 25+ years GreenLeaf Pest Control have serviced commercial audited facilities in Toronto, Kitchener and throughout the GTA.  Trust me when I say this: Kudos to the pest control professionals who dedicate countless hours protecting these facilities. As Protectors of Public Health, companies like Greenleaf Pest Control are indispensable!  We constantly pull our entire team off the road for training. It’s the vast knowledge on audit schemes, pest biology, microbiology, technology, pest control services, customer service, building construction and attention to details (that’s the hard one) that makes us great! As trained pest inspectors and as your pest management provider we must decipher the clues and stop pest issues before they happen….this is no easy task.
What constitutes a commercial facility?
How do I define a commercial facility or client? Well, basically it’s everyone but residential. Recently while driving around Vaughan and Newmarket I looked around and jotted down the following spots in my handy notepad … a technician must have.
Tumblr media
·              Food Service (Restaurants, Quick Serve Restaurants (QSRs), Bars, Institutional Kitchens, etc.)
·              Food and pharmaceutical processing and storage
·              Offices and Institutions
·              Schools and Daycares
·              Health Care Facilities
·              Industrial Plants
Food Facilities are unique, typically they follow GMP’s.
What are GMP’s or cGMP’s?
CGMP refers to the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations. The GMP requirements are ongoing measures designed to ensure an effective overall approach to product quality control and risk management. They do this by setting appropriate standards and practices for the manufacturing, packaging, labelling, and storing of goods.
CGMPs provide systems that assure proper design, monitoring, and control of manufacturing processes and facilities. GMPs are a crucial link to avoiding adulteration and ensuring quality. The practices set a basic safety net of minimum facility sanitation practices to ensure goods are not indirectly contaminated. It also establishes a consistency that secures quality.
Adulteration = defined as intentionally or willingly degrading the quality of the food. Basically, the contamination of food.
Who can audit my facility?
I have provided a high-level list of the most common food safety and auditing bodies, both local and international. There are many more Toronto Facility Audits, but listed below are the most common.
Tumblr media
Local Health Departments
Provincial and Federal Inspectors
American Institute of Baking (AIB)
BRC Global
FSSC 22000
NFC – Cook & Thurber
Primus GFS
SQF
Pro-Cert
CanadaGAP
Why hire a Pest Management Professional (PMP) for your facility?
Tumblr media
In my opinion, it’s good to have these services provided by dedicated service technicians trained in pest management. We have the knowledge, insurance, the right equipment, and understand the rules and regulations. Our focus is ONLY pest management & pest prevention. Whereas maintenance staff are responsible for many job duties and not just pest management.
Many food plants use the services of various independent inspection services that provide a valuable and needed range of GMP and food safety audits to food-handling establishments of all types. Each auditing scheme has its own unique guidelines, a pest control company that specializes in commercial pest management will have the expertise to look after your facility.
Down to Business – What the heck are those black boxes around my facility?
Tumblr media
One aspect of a proper pest prevention program is rodent control. Let’s start with a few basics on exterior rodent prevention – what should I expect for my facility?
Exterior rodent stations, or bait stations, are excellent tools to aid in both monitoring and controlling rodent pressure on the exterior of a facility. Rodenticide is the most associated monitoring and control tool used in exterior rodent stations.
There are some fantastic alternatives to rodent bait that can be used, depending on the facility’s specific regulatory needs, chemical use initiatives, like Organic Cert’s. As a trained pest control professional, it is vital to keep the food supply safe.
Rodenticides, when used correctly and on the exterior of the facility, provide a little risk to the interior food supply. Interior use of rodent bait is rarely a good option; the risk of contaminating the manufactured food is too great.
Rodents living outdoors around your building will eventually try to get inside, looking for warmth, food, water, and shelter. Warmth and basic needs to survive are located inside your facility! Exterior bait stations are an important tool as the first line of defence. Professional Exterior stations do exist. At GreenLeaf we install exteriors stations that look like hydro or cable boxes. Customers and employees usually don’t even know you have a rodent program at your facility.
GreenLeaf Pest Control only uses Tier #1 exterior bait stations that are designed to restrict access for children, pets, and wildlife. Our stations are secured and bolted to a block and locked with a proprietary key. The bait inside is also secured with a locking rod to ensure the bait does not come loose or get knocked out inadvertently. Every attempt is made to ensure safety and reduce risk and liability.
What does the technician inspect for when they perform the exterior rodent service visits?
Tumblr media
First, the technician opens the station and scans the barcode. The electronic handheld device helps to record any feeding, pest activity and observations. This data is transparent to the client’s Q/A team.
The inside of the bait station should be reasonably clean. Plant material, droppings, dead rodents, debris from the bait needs to be swept and bagged for disposal.
If required, fresh new bait is threaded through the locking rod; it is important to secure the bait within the station.
It is critical that at every service the technician doesn’t just service the stations. After all, we/you are the pest detective. The GreenLeaf trained technician inspects for burrows along sidewalks, landscaping beds, ponds, etc. As well as look for other pest threats like wasps, ants, etc.
Document findings and discuss next steps with the client.
Liked what you read? Be sure to like, share, follow. Stay tuned for my next food safety blog. Our goal is for you to make an educated and informed decision when partnering with a Commercial Pest Management Company. Have any questions, give us a call at (416) 998-9473 or book a phone consultation.

Breaking down barriers: Khadijah Mellah delighted to be role model ahead of Goodwood ride
Whether dealing with a racehorse galloping at speed with her, or her position as flag bearer for British Muslims accepts women, Khadijah Mellah takes it all on her in
& I love to surprise people & she says with an insured smile.
And surprise people this 18-year-old from Peckham the most she will certainly play in less than two weeks from the weigh room at Glorious Goodwood waltz to participate in the Magnolia Cup, a ladies-only charity race in addition to that of Victoria Pendleton

] Although there is no official data, it is believed that Khadijah may be the first person to ever have been in a hijab in Britain.
City School and a & # 39; horse-mad girl & # 39; with great ambitions , which are not far away different. But how does she feel about a groundbreaking track for British Muslim women?
& # 39; Of course, getting up at half past five & # 39; morning and sometimes sitting on a difficult horse is tough, but what motivates me is that at some point I might be a role model & # 39 ;, she says Sportsmail
& # 39; When I am on Instagram and I look at people who are reasonably successful, I think: & wow, they have done that a lot, they are so much older. I just want someone someday to look up and think: & # 39; You know what, I can do that. & # 39;
I love it. I like to surprise people. When I bump into people and say, "What are you doing right now?" and I say, "I train to be a jockey," they say & # 39; What? & # 39;
& # 39; The first time I rode on the heath (the gallop in Newmarket), I was released
& # 39; I feel as long as I look, I know what i am doing, then it speaks for itself. Everyone can do it. & # 39;

But she may not have done it without the Ebony Horse Club of Brixton.
Khadijah, who has just completed her A-levels, grew up in the heart of Peckham, in a built-up area
Her father, a handyman, had only once had a horse while her mother had never driven home. people in her neighborhood would not know what a jockey was if she tried to tell what she was doing.
Yet a windfall came when her family moved to Sidcup for a moment and she discovered a stable that was only a short walk away.

Mellah will ride on a four-year-old Haverland during the charity race
That introduction to driving had a lasting impact, but when returning to Peckham the idea of keeping up with it seemed seemingly impossible.
The Duchess Cornish has been the club's president since April 2009, and that is his popularity when Khadijah signed up at the age of nine, it took two years to get rid of the waiting list, but she has since become a competent rider and convinced in February Ebony & # 39; s manager David Fleming her to participate in the Magnolia Cup.
The task ahead of us quickly became clear, an important step was the switch and from quiet riding school ponies to volatile thoroughbreds, and her first time driving gave her a good idea of how difficult that would be.
& # 39; It didn't go so well, to be honest, & she says. I went too fast and caught up with a few people. I didn't know race horses were that fast. It really should have occurred to me. "
<img id =" i-13006bea607495ef "src =" https://ift.tt/2y0G5Iw a-7_1563573424318.jpg "height =" 420 "width =" 634 "alt =" Mellah had to wait two years before she became a member of Ebony Horse Club.

Trying to control half a ton of racehorse has different needed muscles for the Ebony mobs, and now she jokes: & I don't think I even had thigh muscles before! & # 39;
But perhaps it was more diligent than her driving style to change was the fitness test of the British Racing School, which she had to train for while reviewing exams and observing Ramadan. ] How did she find the bleep test, the squat tests, riding a static horse, the push handles and the boards? & # 39; It was brutal! & # 39; she answers quickly.
In the run-up to the big day, Khadijah rode every morning with trainer Charlie Fellowes and developed a good relationship with her horse for the race – a four-Haverland, which she describes as a & # 39; quiet guy & # 39 ;.
Her technique has received much praise from Royal Ascot-winning jockey Hayley Turner, who told her: & # 39; You look nicer than I & # 39; when they trained on mechanical horses together.

Millions more highlights of the race will be shown on ITV, while her story is also turned into a documentary – Riding A Dream – later will be shown this year.
The documentary is a co-production of ITV race presenter Oli Bell, who admits he says t much about British society, not just racing, that's her too
& # 39; She's a titan, & # 39; he says.
& # 39; At this time it is not only important for the eyes of the racing world to
& # 39; I absolutely want to see you, but the eyes of the world. & # 39; 39; come in the top three & # 39 ;, she says. & # 39; If I won, it would be monumental & # 39;

So, a life like a jockey beckons?
& # 39; But I want to go to college and hopefully get a diploma, then follow an engineering career. back to ride again. We shall see. "
With that she goes on saddles and a moment later she whistles past the camera crews and makes a quick walk through the gallopade.
But above all, this young woman is on her way to win a race.

Time Flies......
Wow - even I am shocked at how slack I have been - over 5 years since my last post! I don't know where to begin.....
I guess a brief overview of the past 5 years would be a good start! To stop this being a tome, I think it's probably best if I do 1 post per year, so here goes for post #1:
2015
So in 2015 Matt and I moved to Norfolk (as per my last post....eek!) initially we moved into Matt's house in Attleborough with my sister (she already lived in Norfolk and had been renting the house from him).
Work-wise, I started working as a Veterinary Physiotherapist at Dick White Referrals in Newmarket 3 days a week, which was an absolutely amazing experience. It was a bit of a commute, although driving through Newmarket in the mornings and seeing the racehorses out for exercise definitely softened the blow! The majority of the inpatient cases we treated at DWR were neurology cases, so lots of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), some polyneuropathies and fibrocartilagenous emobolisms (FCE) etc., with dachshunds and french bulldogs being sadly over-represented in the patient population. Neurology cases really are so rewarding though, and I genuinely loved (and still love) rehabilitating cases which were either being conservatively managed or post-surgery. We also provided post surgical care for orthopaedic cases and physiotherapy for some internal medicine patients (those which were recumbent, for example) and had the odd feline case to see too (often post road traffic accidents), so the work was really interesting and I learnt a lot. For the rest of the week, I also worked part-time in a small animal first opinion practice in Watton, closer to home, as a receptionist. Myself and another member of the team, Claire Lawrence, who is an excellent McTimoney Animal Therapist, started a musculoskeletal service for dogs and cats at the surgery. In addition to this, I offered private physiotherapy for horses, cats and dogs in my "free time" and began working towards my Masters Research Project - perhaps it is beginning to become clear why I let the blog slide!
When we moved to Norfolk, I moved the horses to a small, quiet yard in Barnham Broom, which was around a 20 minute drive from where we moved to initially in Attleborough. The yard and people were lovely, but it became clear quite quickly that the limited facilities (lack of a school), distance between the stables and grazing, limited hacking and the location of the yard (in the opposite direction to either of my jobs) weren't working, so in the September I moved the horses to a large livery yard in Wymondham, where Tilly kept Archie. I wasn't convinced they would be entirely settled in a large, busy yard, and I had a few other reservations, but the new manager assured me there would be no "in-days" and all I could do was try, especially given the amazing hacking, great facilities and ideal location. Dancer and Archie had lived together for many years before Tilly moved to Norfolk in 2009, and definitely had not forgotten one another <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may remember (although given the time that has past, possibly not!) that we put the house in Attleborough up for sale and put an offer in on a cottage in a village outside Shipdham, which was accepted. We hoped to be in by Christmas, and the good news is that we were. Obviously we didn't manage to move within 6 weeks as the Estate Agent had suggested (ha ha ha) but we were in I think 10 days before Christmas, which we then hosted for both of our families, which was fun!
On boxing day 2015, Tilly and I had great fun taking Dancer and Archie to the boxing day meet in Wymondham, hosted by the Dunston Harriers. We had an absolutely fantastic day, and Dancer thoroughly made the most of doing what she loves best, charging across the countryside with her best mate Archie (they were so happy to be reunited when we moved up here) and a load of horses in pursuit of some dogs following a trail - bliss! :-)
Tumblr media
She absolutely belied her 23 years and behaved like a very excited (but mannerly) 7 year old, which was great fun for us both, although I felt like I had arms like Mr Tickle the following day (and legs of jelly). It was really lovely to be part of such a traditional event, meeting in Wymondham town centre with large crowds gathered and I must admit to feeling quite emotional about my wonderful horse and all the wonderful experiences I have enjoyed because of her as we set off. All in all, a perfect way to end the year.
