Najir - Commuter
By: Irate Specialist
Since COVID-19 has come and disrupted the status quo for the majority of Americans, most are trying to fight boredom and stay entertained. However, artists are thriving during this time and helping to provide people with entertainment they so desire. New Jersey's artists are some of the most creative out there and are continually dropping content that is drawing attention to how dope we are. One artist who is expertly doing his part to put Jersey on the map is Najir with his debut E.P, Commuter. Najir likes to describe himself as an individual who marches to the sound of his own drum. "I am what I am, and I don't like to do what everyone else is doing. I do what feels right," said Najir.
instagram
His individualistic and creative personality is strongly felt throughout this project as well, making it a great first look it to the mind of this talented artist. He uses a lyrical approach to bring to life stories from his past as well as blow away the competition. However, Najir's main intention is not just to display his lyrical ability, but also songs interesting enough that they keep your attention throughout the track. On Commuter, he does this while using the idea of a commuter to illustrate that he is always on his way to somewhere higher. "I always felt like I had to commute somewhere, so that's a big part of my journey," said Najir. "Me being on my way to something greater than I'm at right now."
This notion all starts with the first track, "This Is Me." On "This Is Me," Najir helps the audience get to know him by breaking down his name. Growing up in Summit, NJ, and having a moniker like Najir caused him to have to endure constant mispronunciations and misuse of his name. So he had to set the record straight let us know who he is through this song. "I'm like yo, if this is going to be my first project, I have to let people know who I am from the jump," said Najir. "So I'm like 'who am I?' Oh, this is me, and I gave it to them like that. You don't take anything to the grave, but your name." So Najir makes sure to let everyone know the struggles in having his name but also the power in it.
The track is a sure-fire hit from this E.P is the track "Can I Call You." This was a Jersey club instrumental produced by a dude in Texas that he held onto for a while. Once he felt the time was right he recorded the track and instantly knew it was a hit. "I dropped it, and people were like 'THIS IS THAT WORK,'" said Najir. This was the sentiment that was heard everywhere the song was promoted. The catchiness of this track comes from the hook. The way Najir uses the bounciness of the instrumental to drill the hook into your head as you bop to it. Plus, Najir makes use of his lyrical ability to tell a dope story of about shorty who he's missing.
instagram
The last track on the E.P is "Rumble in the Garden," where Najir makes it known that Jersey is making noise, and you should be listening. "The rumble in the garden is the things that are going on here. More specifically, the music that's going on," said Najir. "You may not understand, but there's a community here that doesn't get our proper shine." So Najir paints the picture of the movement happening in Jersey by creatively telling our story through goblins, gargoyles, and double entendres.
So If you're looking for some new Jersey talent to take a look into, check out Najir and his E.P Commuter. Also, if you're looking for more information about the ep Najir and I do a full break down on the Music & Mindfulness Podcast, link in @irate_specialist's bio.
In these uncertain times, one thing is certain Jersey music will keep getting better and better by the day, and artists like Najir are leading the way.

GRIM: Damage Control
By: Natalee Gilbert
With more truth and less falsity, New Jersey-based creative, Grim creates a sound that holds nothing back and instead, paves the way for other artists to do the same. Advocating for originality, Grim says that while his music is based on real situations, he also makes sure to add in a vibe that everyone can rock to. "I like a dark trap or dark slow melody kind of vibe to match the Grim Persona" he adds. And if I'm being frank here, his project Damage Control lives up to this notion. Aside from carrying that spook in its overall soundscape, Damage Control comes with scathing verses and a cadence that could crush anyone's "so-called" ego.
In this 12-piece collection, Grim bust the clout-chasers and he even leaves room to speak about his dwellings. However, he's worked hard to get to where he is (unlike them). The artist says that the album’s theme stems from how rappers are acting now. To elaborate, Grim says “They all believe that got everything on lock, now it's time to show who deserves the recognition.” Notable tracks like “No Games,” “LEGO,” “Thankful,” and “Storytime Pt 1” deserve some spins. But really, the whole project is a bop. To say the least, Damage Control provides listeners with multiple flows, witty punchlines, catchy hooks and a variety of genres that intertwine. Grim is a persona, feeling, and vibe, in a way but the difference is that he uses his gift to tell stories that leave some sort of impact. As one flips through the tracks, they won’t be able to resist their urge to hear more. However, don’t be mistaken. By no means is Grim a rapper. To clarify, he’s an artist. “Hip-Hop helped me go through any issue I had growing up, it was my escape, my everything. It's all I ever wanted to do. It will never end it's only going to get better and I will support every artist that cares about their craft.”
Tumblr media
To begin, “No Games” speaks volumes in its lyrics but the beat, however, is a big misconception of the song title. Grim talks about how he works hard to get to where he is now. Due to working around the clock, he’s able to flex off luxurious jewelry, foreign cars, and drip. And the artist even says that he’d rather not be compared to others. To amp up “No Game,” Grim possesses a bouncy, articulate flow and cut-throat verses. Regardless, the soundscape goes in an upbeat tempo and integrates a gritty 808. Grim says that “No Games” was the most fun to make, “My producer and I baked some cookies and made hits.” he continues “It was a classic night.”
“See Thru” meshes faint harmonic cries with sporadic hi-hats and an anonymous eerie progression. The track itself highlights Grim’s maturity and the rhymer even goes so far as to say that he’s drippin’ now and has his water too. His collaborator, Will Harbor uses slight auto-tune to speak on how he lives by the silver lining. My favorite punchline to date is when Harbor says “Need the ice, I need the cream. Ben and Jerry’s double scoop.”
Still, “LEGO” holds weight in keeping things trap-ridden. Besides this genre, “LEGO” takes influence from country in its guitar riffs and steady, faint eerie piano progression. Even so, the synths ride out with an 8-bit backdrop to prove that Grim didn’t come to play. Starting, “LEGO” comes with a little hum and then he does a repetitive pattern on the last words of his rhyme schemes until the 0:50 mark. He says that he’s going to go and get it.
Additionally, “Story Time Pt 1.” crossovers between jazz-inspired piano riffs, boom-bap, and a steady, dark baseline. This song tells an intriguing tale that takes place on a rainy night. Praying to the one above, Grim hopes that he doesn’t get robbed. But sure enough, someone tries to stick him for his paper at his doorstep. Still, the joke is on him because Grim keeps his bands in the stash box. Shortly after, things get hectic after the guy pulls out a gun in which Grim refers to as “sunny.” To add, Grim mentions that the wangsta only pulls it out on a rainy day. And as the artist runs around aimlessly, his life flashes before his eyes, (don’t worry, he isn’t dead). In short, “Story Time Pt 1.” ends with a cliffhanger.
Tumblr media
Moreover, “TROOF” takes influence from the trap and follows up with futuristic synths and sporadic hi-hats. Essentially, “TROOF” takes the melody from “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” for a dark spin. To play off this idea, Grim even says “I let my light radiate,” and “I’d rather pass the shine.” Punchlines like “They be peddling their bikes, I’m on my 4 wheeler” and “They only rap what they assume, I’m recognizable in close rooms” speak volume on the song’s underlying message.
Grim grew up in the 732, so he only had to bring it! “Let Em’ Dance” talks about everlasting growth and how he’s only going to reap the benefits of being an icon in the game. Sure, others can do what they want, but just know that he’s going to get it regardless (and lend a hand to his loved ones along the way). Production-wise, “Let Em’ Dance” uses daunting hi-hats, piano riffs, wind percussions, and an oh, so heavy base. The metaphoric line “Just wait till I blossom, a flower needs to water and b*tch I’m dripping like a faucet.” takes a jab at one double entendre whereas the rest plays out as a punchline.
Categorized as a trap song, “UFO” provides hi-hat progressions, a dark snare pattern, speaker-knocking base, and distorted spacey synths. Grim goes to say with a little flex that he’s trying to make the proper moves to get two steps ahead. Lines like “I’ve been trying to find a place and time/Park the ship and make the stars align,” express this message to the max. The feature, Will Harbor carries a deep tonality and just has fun with his verses.
Now “Story Time Pt 1’s” predecessor, “Story Time Pt 2.” switches the tempo and turns into boom-bap. Over the deep piano riff, an 808 cuts in now and then. Sure, they make a sudden appearance but the instrumentation refuses to stay in the same pattern. To further put it, the soundscape just always seems to fit. “Story Time Pt 2” basically speaks about how all rappers fight for the same spot. In first verse, Grim metaphorically exposes how clout chasing rappers glorify drugs and alcohol by saying “Slip him half of a Xanny and watch him wash it down with Jack/told him spit a 16’ all the sh*t that you can think of.” and “He dropping to the ground/every smile turns into a frown. I’m asking where the clout at now?” “Body and Prada up in a box” Speaking of which, Grim would rather stay in his lane and build rappers up. In means of encouraging others, he hints that he’s always going to stay true to himself no matter what.
Then the song shifts to “Lights Out” which implements eerie, spacey synths in a trap-ridden fashion. In “Lights Out,” Grim reminisces the hard days and celebrates the good ones. And he doesn’t forget to add that he likes a girl who wears Louis Vuitton. On the other hand, “Lights Out’s” strongest component is its bounce and to take it up a notch is Grim’s collaborator, Will Harbor who weaves into a fast flow as well.
Second to last, “White” tackles onto cash register synths and deep, booming bass. Here, Grim flexes off the jewelry while his featured femcee, KillaKay lets her natural swag take over and she ends up shutting it down!
Finally, “Thankful” comes in as a somber ballad and provides listeners with a dark, bellowing bass. Through switched up flows, Grim allows himself to be vulnerable and lines like “I got too much on my mind, I don’t know where I’m going. I don’t want to close but I don’t want to open” prove this very statement. He’s tired of others excluding him out because he’s different. And one can just hear his pain through his rhymes. In means of relatability, Grim says in this very line, “Every soul know the struggle of the come-up/The 9-to-5, then come home, record till sun up. It ain’t for the fame or Hussle, boy you better nut up/Deserve some plaques now/Not a little, I need a tunnel. All-in-all, Grim is thankful for all those past situations because it helped him to become who he is today.
Tumblr media
With Damage Control, Grim hopes that fans hear that he’s taking this seriously, “I'm not here to just talk about drugs, guns and sex 24/7.” he continues “Yes, it has its place but you can do more with music.”
If you haven’t already, listen to Damage Control. It is available on all platforms.
Fun Fact: Grim says that 17 by XXXTENTACION saved his life.

Summer In Jersey - The Garden State Hip Hop Hour’s Richard Scott
By: Natalee Gilbert
In a land full of snakes, the Garden State is far from one.
Composed of only free spirits who "ride that wave" at all cost, New Jerseyans put on for their hometowns. As a union, they mostly have sleepless nights and quick snooze sessions throughout the day. But alone, they come from different backgrounds that helped them grow.
Even so, there is one thing that all residents can agree on: Summer In Jersey lives up to all of New Jersey's hype.
When you tune into Summer In Jersey, expect songs that highlight New Jersey's undying pride and summer functions. As one part of the compilation references to the club (or klerb as others might say), the others fall in line as beach, flex or nightclub anthems. Besides this, Summer In Jersey carries a three-part skit by The Infinite Nudist. Essentially its all about a friend who is convincing another to go with him to the beach. Then, a girl whos fed up with his distant ways as they go to the shore and it closes off with a late-night "You Up?" call from a friend who tries to convince the other to leave and go to a lituation.
A few notable tracks like "Mexico Bity (Cliquot Mix)", "Dollar Sign Malc", "Sorry Not Sorry", "Maria", "Can I Call You', "Black Pool Party" and "Invited" help tourist get the jist of what it's like to live in a goal-driven yet party oriented state. The 21 piece collective is curated by The Garden State Hip Hop Hour's boss man, Richard Scott who sought to make a timeless summer tape that everyone can enjoy.
Cued into a section of every song, Siri does her part in announcing that it's a "Garden State Hi-Hop Hour Exclusive."
The first song "Valentino" by Chad B is moreso a flex track that seperates itself with self-reflection and words of encouragement. One reason why he's able to shine is because of the daily grind. Still, his success mostly stems from an undeniable skill with rhyme schemes and autotune. Following in unison is a "diamond-in-the-rough" beat that embellishes on the obstacles he's encountered. But Chad B teaches all that there is a silver lining if you just believe and focus on yourself.
"Bad Girls Only” by Melo V is a salute to all those women working 9 to 5s! The beat is influenced by pop, techno even some R&B but the power of the track is held by Melo's strong, melodic vocal play. "Bad Girls Only" really allows women to let loose and enjoy themselves.
Fourth in line, "No Way" by Trophy Hitta Sage keeps up the momentum especially with this one liner, "Wearing yellow in the summer, you're a bright catch." Like Chad B. she uses auto-tune but its a bit more airy and passionate. At most "No Way" is a techno/hip-hop track. Trophy Hitta Sage uses the beat to speak about a girl whos got her going crazy and she just wants to know whats up.
Then theres "Invited" by BUMPPRO, a track thats quite infectious and falls as an anthem to those who don't get invited to the "off-the-wall" parties. Sonically "Invited" dabbles into rock but then carries on with futuristic synthesizers, techno and auto-tune. The song speaks about a party next door that BUMPPRO has heard about but he wasn't invited to. Nevertheless he's with the hype and is going anyway because everyone needs to let loose every now and then. The best line thus far from "Invited" is "Sounds like a sick party bouncing off the wall/ I got a case, I got a bottle. But I look fly, I came to party/f*ck those problems."
In pursuit "Act Up" by Rich Smiles stresses the projects care-free flair. It's hard to fit "Act Up" 's genre into one because of the R&B vocals at hand with a dancehall and caribbean feel. Here, he sings about a women has caught his attention but he's not looking for commitment. To have her for one night is enough and he won't let anything (or anyone) stand in his way. The highlight of "Act Up" is when Rich Smiles does a vocal run on the phrases "back up" in chorus and "act up". He really cranks up the heat with his ability to alter R&B's main focal point on love.
'Intentions" by Ganja Killz and "Zaya" take a similar approach. Driven by latin and caribbean vibes, they both use soothing vocals so listeners can feel at ease. Besides this, their native tongue pays homage to where they’re from. It’s nothing but tropical slashed with a whole lot of sultry energy.
Next, “Mexico Bity (Cliquot City)” by Killa Klerk Cobain travels back to Spanish Harlem. Killa Klerk Cobain gives glory to Jersey Club and uses it to drive the beat selection. But really, its to show listeners that people in New Jersey “really just be vibin’.” This track is solely for those who are looking to have a good time. So the tango might as well go on!
Fast forward and "Jersey Anthem" by GrooveBoyPut ft. Dougie F., Tsu Surf, Sonny Breeze, Crunch Calhoun, Albee Al Daddy pave the way for all New Jersey artists to keep going! Just like them, they've been through the struggle but still conquered. Now they're realistically living their dreams. For those who weren't there for the long haul, just know these emcees hold weight. They're coming with the pounds and don't care what others think regardless!
"For The Low" by $uper Drug$ ft.Threat Digga says it all in the title. Proficient in the ways of trapping and counting blue faces, these two only wreak havoc when someone disturbs their peace. Beat wise, "For The Low" takes the aggressive approach. These two do justice in being blunt, flexing and collecting their coins discreetly.
Now if there comes a time when a jam for night drives is needed, then "All Summer" by Dollar Sign Malc is the perfect fit. Because it gives off a 90's vibe, "All Summer" will be the only thing that shines this season. To summarize, this song fits all occasions like going to the beach or riding around the town with a shawty. Same applies for "Can I Call You?" by Najir. Even though it leans more towards a early 2000's sound, its still something with hype due to the Jersey Club influence. Najir in this song speaks about how hes in need for love and doesn't want to lose his girl.
Funnily enough, "Maria" by Smooch also speaks on a love whos got the artist stuck. Like “Mexico Bity (Cliquot City)” the beat takes a trip to South America and uses some boom bap flair. On a vocal standpoint, he hits more notes than rhymes but he excels when dabbling into the two.
"Te Fallo" by Lilskrt4k feat. Chris Cruz is similar to 'Intentions" and "Zaya". Same tropical sound with a bit of reggaeton but theres more energy and switch between Spanish and English. Seems like this song is speaking about doing anything for love also. The part that gets me is the ad-libs. It really makes one feel like they're on an island.
To say the least, "We Jus" by Bulletproof Belv tells all about summer flings. Although they're great in the moment, it's really short-lived once the leaves turn brown. "We Jus" beat leans into the trap side. But because of the background drums and snares, it distinguishes itself as a summer vibe. Overall "We Jus" is a song to play when it's just too hard to say "this is a DTF situation."
On the other hand, "Sorry Not Sorry" by GrooveBoyPut and Smoove The Rapper goes in the opposite direction. GrooveBoyPut and Smoove The Rapper are really feeling this girl but shes done them dirty so now they've started to care less. Because of the drums in back and xclophone, it categorizes itself as a summer anthem. Still, "Sorry Not Sorry" has some trap influence and can easily be mistaken as another flex or derogatory song. All in all "Sorry Not Sorry" is a song for the heartbroken. It goes hard on self-liberation and leaves no room for tears or empathy.
"See This" by DOMS is worth all the hype. Trap-ridden at its own leisure, DOMS dares anyone to step up because it'll be them against him and his boys. Equally important, DOMS flexes at an all time high. One line that speaks volume is, "Gotta make those sacrifices if you want to beat them."
Like the last track, "To the 6ix" by A-Money$ is a trap song. Aside from highlighting his luxurious trips around the world, "To the 6ix" doesn't forget to talk about the exotic women and drip that he easily obtains.
Next to last, "Can't Be" by Honey gives off a bittersweet feeling. A once mutual love, Honey catches on to her mans sneaky ways. Thus she can’t help but to be hard on herself for not noticing sooner. Following is Honey's emotionally captivating vocals and a beat that pulls heart strings.
Finally, Summer In Jersey closes off with a lucid song called "Black Pool Party (CLICQUOT MIX)" by Clicquot Geno and Jet Lyte. Contrary to the beat, these two go all in with smooth sailing vocals and confidence. Some can even go so far as to say that "Black Pool Party" is making waves. Don't believe me? Listen for yourself. This song basically speaks on how they have no time for the B.S. and how certain individuals are now trying to swim on their stream of fortune. To summarize, the R&B and hip-hop influences run deep.
Go and stream Summer In Jersey now. It's available on DatPiff.
