Tyne Bridge Early Morning This scene of the Tyne Bridge Prints, Early Morning, is one of my best selling prints of Newcastle. Sadly, it’s a view that cannot be repeated today. It was taken from Gateshead’s multi-storey car park which was demolished in 2010. The car park starred in one of Britain’s greatest cult gangster films Get Carter starring Michael Caine. The car park’s cinema fame was sealed when Carter threw Cliff Brumby, played by Bryan Mosley, from the top in a gruesome scene. It’s architect, Owen Luder attended it’s demolition. He said in an interview that the car park should be kept and the shops below revamped. It’s demise made way for a retail and student village. I wonder if that will make it into the movies? I recall going to the car park’s roof top in the autumn of 1992. From the rooftop I did some sketchbook studies of the early morning light breaking over the Newcastle skyline. With the aid of some of the photographs I took on that day, I was able to produce what has become something of an iconic view of the finest bridge in the North of England. Mary Flora Bell was born 26 May 1957 in Corbridge, Northumberland, England.
Bell was only 10 years old when she strangled her first victim, four-year-old Martin Brown just a day before her 11th birthday on 25 May 1968. Mary and her 13-year-old neighbour, Norma Bell (no relation) knocked on Martin Brown’s aunt, Rita Finlay’s door and informed her, “one of your sister’s bairns has just had an accident. We think it’s Martin, but we can’t tell because there’s blood all over him.”
Dr. Bernard Knight conducted a post-mortem the following day upon the body of Martin. Knight was unable to find any signs of violence on the four-year-olds body, thus was unable to determine a cause of death. Knight’s theory was poisoning through ingesting tablets.
Two months later, Mary mutilated a three-year-old boy, Brian Howe.
Brian was last seen playing outside his house with one of his siblings, the family dog and Mary Bell and Norma Bell. Relatives became concerned when the boy did not return home later that afternoon. Concerned and worried neighbours and relatives scoured the streets to look for Brian.
At 11:10 pm, a search party discovered Brian Howe’s body between two large concrete blocks upon the “Tin Lizzie”.

A policeman who was first on the scene, observed that a “deliberate but feeble” attempt had been made to conceal the body due to being covered by clumps of grass and weeds. Brian was found with bruises and scratches on his neck and a pair of broken scissors lay close to his feet.
A coroner concluded that Brian had died of strangulation, and that he had been deceased for up to seven and a half hours. Brian’s genitals were found to be mutilated and he had an ‘M’ carved into his stomach.
Prior to Brian’s murder, on Mary’s 11th birthday, she and Norma broke into a nursery and vandalised it. The two ripped tiles off the slate roof, tore books, upturned desks and smeared ink and poster paints around the property before escaping.
Staff discovered the break-in the following day, along with four separate notes claiming responsibility for Martin Browns murder. One of these notes stated: “I murder SO That I may come back”; another read: “WE did murder martain brown fuckof you bastard”; a third note simply read: “Fuch off we murder. Watch out Fanny and Faggot.”
The final note was the most complex, reading: “You are mice Y Becurse we murdered Martain Go Brown you Bete Look out THERE are Murders about By Fanny and auld Faggot you Screws.” This was dismissed by police as a childish prank.

Two days before the funeral of Martin Brown, Mary Bell and Norma Bell called upon the house of his mother, June, asking to see her son. When June Brown replied that they couldn’t see her son because he was deceased, Mary replied, “Oh, I know he’s dead, I want to see him in his coffin.”
The trial of Mary Bell and Norma Bell started on 5 December 1968, in Newcastle Assizes. Both girls pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The trial lasted nine days. Mary Bell was cleared of murder, but convicted of the manslaughter of both boys on the grounds of diminished responsibility; Norma Bell was acquitted of all charges. Upon hearing the verdict, Norma clapped her hands in excitement, whereas Mary burst into tears as her mother and grandmother also wept.
Bell was first detained in a Durham remand home before being transferred to a second remand home in South Norwood. She was then transferred to Red Bank secure unit, a young offenders institution in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside.
According to the Guardian, Mary Bell was, “the only girl among 20 or so boys.” She was allegedly subject to sexual abuse by a member of staff and also by fellow inmates, to which the rest of the staff turned a blind eye.

The second night at Wembley Stadium is probably the most famous and well-documented concert of Queen's career. It was filmed by 15 cameras with the initial intention to air it on TV in October. David Bowie was rumoured to join the band on stage for Under Pressure, but it never materialized. Mick Jagger was in the audience, and hung out with the band before the show.
The band, particularly Freddie, seem to be a bit nervous at various points tonight, knowing well that this was the big show that was being filmed to be seen by millions of people throughout the ages. His voice is in not quite as good shape as it was last night, which led to many vocal overdubs being done for the TV/radio simulcast and official releases. Brian's nerves also reveal themselves early on, as he messes up the tapping solo in the middle of One Vision (the only time he ever missed it), and later he completely omits the first half of the Hammer To Fall solo (which he also did in Brussels).
All of these slight flaws aside, the video demonstrates how Queen had simply mastered their craft, having arguably orchestrated the perfect stadium show. Brian May would later refer to Queen's touring work ethic as becoming "a well-oiled machine" when in the swing of things.
Pics 4 is a great shot of the blow-ups of the band members released into the sky during A Kind Of Magic. One of them was found by an old lady in her back yard the next morning.
Before Who Wants To Live Forever, Freddie insists, "we're gonna stay together until we fucking well die, I'm sure." There is a mighty truth to the statement which he certainly may have been aware of at this point.
After the impromptu, Brian May puts on a clinic of how to construct a guitar solo. A polar opposite of last night's mediocre solo spot, tonight's rendition is simply magnificent, and perhaps the definitive example of his musicality in the spotlight.
This is another one of those shows where Freddie shouts "Go Johnny!" during the instrumental part of Now I'm Here, referencing Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry.
The bobby hat Mercury is seen with in the acoustic set he stole from a side stage officer during the Newcastle show, in clear view of the audience!
The band attempt a couple more covers tonight, both for the last time - Gimme Some Lovin' and Big Spender. The songs had been tried out earlier in the tour, and the latter had been performed often throughout the 70s.
A fan recalls: "Freddie was perfect, he managed to bring the audience into the show in a way that felt really encompassing and natural. He was on our side and we were on his. Outside of Prince I can't think of any performer I've seen that has managed to bring an audience together as well as he did. It felt communal. His posteuring was always accompanied by a sly tongue-in-cheek understanding that this was a show and he was performing, but he always had a little wink or tongue poke that broke any sense of pomposity. The love for Freddie from the audience was palpable in a way I haven't felt since."
After the show, billed as "Dicky Hart And The Pacemakers" for fun, Queen and some other stars, including Cliff Richard and Samantha Fox, had a jam session at the Kensington Roof Gardens Night Club. Tutti Frutti and Sweet Little Rock And Roller were among the songs played. Short video clips have turned up in documentaries, like The Magic Years.
Samantha Fox recalls: "I sang with Freddie Mercury at a party once and that was fantastic. I couldn’t believe it when he pulled me up. It was their private party in Kensington. As soon as you got into the lift there were naked women painted green, like a forest. They had midgets with little trays of drinks. You just knew it was going to be a brilliant party. Queen took the stage and they jammed for about an hour [the party itself went until about 9am]. It was amazing. And Gary Glitter got up, too! He pulled me up and asked me what songs I knew. And you know when you can’t think? I asked if he knew Touch Me and he laughed and said, 'What about Go Johnny Go?’ We ended up singing that together. It was amazing to do a duet with Freddie."
The party itself was a tame affair for a mere 500 guests, including designers Yves St Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, David and Elizabeth Emanuel, and Queen's old colleague Zandra Rhodes, who'd designed outfits for them in 1974. One publication recalls, "Queen held a famous party after their Wembley concert in July 1986 at the Roof Garden above Kensington High Street where 500 guests included Cliff Richard, Spandau Ballet and Gary Glitter. 'The uniform of every waiter, boy or girl, was body paint,' remembers Gary. 'At first you didn't notice they had nothing on, then you did a double take and thought, Wow! Only Queen would have thought to do this.' Among the other delights laid on for the guests were a scantily-clad woman on duty in the men's toilet and an equally under-dressed gent in the ladies ready to render whatever assistance was asked. That night Freddie made a point of being seen with Mary Austin on his arm. His boyfriend Jim Hutton was nowhere in sight."

idk if youve seen but theres major flooding in north nsw/south east queensland (australia), i was stranded for three days (mon 28/9 night - thurs 3/3 morn) at a service station/truck stop bc the town was completely surrounded by water! thankfully we were travelling and had food, drinks, extra clothes, etc. the servo was actually really good - it was on the highway. there was no accomodation in town so we tried to find somewhere 24/7 to sleep in the car but there was nowhere. we decided to try the servo bc that’s where the truckies sleep. literally the next morning the town was completely flooded! there was servo snacks, bathrooms, showers(!) we definitely had it great compared to those stuck on the side of the road or worse, on their roofs. not many people can say theyve walked down a major highway before… about 100-150 people were there in total. the power went out tues night though and reception was extremely spotty throughout. ses (state emergency service, volunteers) visited us periodically (their cars could drive through the water) but we werent considered in danger. everyone had to sleep in their cars (unless they had a sleeping bag, once the power went out the doors to the servo were stuck open so people could sleep inside. to paint the picture it was like a small departure lounge). so many things happened these past few days i couldn’t possibly go into it all - the first night everyone panicked and almost trapped ourselves on a ramp and got lost bc we were scared of flooding. if that had happened we would be in a much, much worse position - thankfully the ses were there and told us to go back to the servo. this morning (thurs), ses said the 4 wheel drives were tall enough to get through the flood water. we (my parents & i) have a pretty big car and could get through - it was nothing compared to a flooded road we had to drive through later though! 400 ml is fine to drive through, but this was fast moving water… we were absolutely fine in the end though. the main concern was the pacific highway/motorway (between sydney & brisbane, coastal) being closed in certain areas. southbound is still closed (we need to go back home to sydney) so weve had to drive into qld and detour onto the new england hwy (~toowoomba - newcastle inland) to rejoin the pacific hwy into syd (it’s open there). it’s taken so long to get home but thankfully we’re almost there, have to spend tonight (thurs) at a motel. central coast/syd/south coast of nsw are set to receive extreme rain this week. we keep hearing this is a freak flood, 1 in 500 year event. but floods are getting more frequent and more destructive. as a meteorology enthusiast i thought you’d might be interested in the weather on the east coast here - there were similar floods last year, not even to mention the black summer bushfires (2019-20)
I've heard about this! I've been watching on the news and seeing a lot of absolutely insane pictures coming from affected areas. I've seen some flooding before but I haven't seen water that high very often -- usually that's the kind of depth that you expect from a storm surge in a severe hurricane. this is absolutely wild.

thinking about flood water high enough to do that is honestly scary as hell. it's also scary to consider that fact that there's been a lot of "once in a lifetime" or "once in 100 years" weather events going on lately, that are very much occuring not once in a lifetime or a century but rather once every few years, or even yearly for some weather events. it's absolutely a sign of the planet's changing atmosphere, and I wish more people would wake up to the fact that these weather events will become normal and worse if this carries on. the people with the power to change it are the people who are burying their heads in the sand, but if this carries on everything that can be influenced by a warming planet -- hurricanes, other storm systems, floods, and wildfires -- are going to get more frequent and more severe. we're seeing proof of this every year.

Central Arcade Newcastle upon Tyne is full of architectural treasures, one of which is the Central Arcade, a stunning Edwardian shopping arcade built in 1906 within the Central Exchange, a triangular building built by Richard Grainger in 1836-1838 to the designs of John Wardle and George Walker. I’ve painted the outside of the building on many occasions as it appears in my paintings of Grey Street, Grainger Street and Market Street. Folk in Newcastle will best remember the Central Arcade as the home of J.G. Windows music. I recall going in to the basement to check out the latest rock music releases as a long haired Genesis fan many years ago! Back in 1993 I was commissioned to do an original watercolour of the Central Arcade in Newcastle. At the time, I was doing a series of paintings of Newcastle taken from ariel perspectives. The client had commissioned two other paintings along that theme and wanted the one of the arcade to be viewed from above too. This was a challenging task, as the Central Arcade is enclosed by a glass roof and there is no public access to the balcony that is on the first floor. I managed to persuade the caretaker at the time to allow me to climb through a small window from a room that overlooked the shopping area below, for me to be able to take some photographs. There’s nearly always somebody busking in the arcade but unfortunately on this occasion there wasn’t so a few days later I drew my son Oliver playing his violin on our driveway from an upstairs bedroom window to get the correct perspective.
