It is a remarkable and never seen before snapshot of royal motherhood.

The image, taken by Lord Snowdon, shows Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, Princess Alexandra, and the Duchess of Kent holding their newborn babies in 1964.

It was captured by Princess Margaret's celebrated photographer husband as a personal token of thanks for Sir John Peel, the royal obstetrician who delivered all four babies within two months — Prince Edward, Lady Sarah Chatto, James Ogilvy, and Lady Helen Windsor.

And it will be one of the highlights of a new exhibition Royal Portraits: A Century of Photography, opening tomorrow at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace.

The charming picture will be displayed along with a handwritten letter from Princess Margaret to her sister, asking her 'Darling Lilibet' to sign a print 'as a souvenir of an extraordinary two months of delivery.'

The new exhibition — the first to be held at the The King's Gallery since it was renamed following the death of Queen Elizabeth — will also include The Queen Mother's personal copy of her daughter's Coronation portrait and the earliest surviving colour photographic print of a member of the Royal Family.

It charts the evolution of royal portrait photography from the 1920s to the present day through more than 150 items from the Royal Collection and Royal Archives.

The photographs presented in the exhibition are vintage prints – the original works produced by the photographer – most of which are on display for the first time.

Alessandro Nasini, curator of Royal Portraits: A Century of Photography, said: 'The Royal Collection holds some of the most enduring photographs ever taken of the Royal Family, captured by the most celebrated portrait photographers of the past hundred years – from Dorothy Wilding and Cecil Beaton to Annie Leibovitz, David Bailey, and Rankin.

Alongside these beautiful vintage prints, which cannot be on permanent display for conservation reasons, we are excited to share archival correspondence and never-before-seen proofs that will give visitors a behind-the-scenes insight into the process of creating such unforgettable royal portraits.'

'Royal Portraits: A Century of Photography' is at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, from tomorrow (May 17) until October 6, 2024.

What a pretty long journey we have spent with this stylish British Nigerian couple. You counted blue cars as a child; you always believed in a God and a Devil, but didn’t think the world—let alone the afterlife—was so black-and-white. But you never had proof… that’s what faith is, isn’t it? One day, though, you swear you’ll know. Who knew that following one former Disney star through her career suicide would get you everything you’ve ever wanted: a name for yourself and evidence. But at what cost? Genesis never lied: awareness has a price.

HISTORY:

You were always a curious, superstitious child, prone to believing things rather than not believing things. Older kids teased you about being gullible, so you grew a thick skin, but you never stopped your search for whatever truth might be out there. Some people, you thought, were too blinded by reality to find reality—maybe that makes you eccentric, but that’s alright. Your parents were Church of Saints, folks who believed in making a brighter tomorrow. They instilled in you a sense of doing, of action to make change rather than being a bystander in life. Always in love with photography, they offered you Pulitzer photos like Kent State; John Paul Filo, 1970 and Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima; Joe Rosenthal, 1945—they wanted to show you what the right photo could express, could invite, could make aware, could change. You dreamed of a Pulitzer, however out of reach it seemed... especially since your goal has always been to prove the existence of God. That would be a photograph to shape the future and change the world. Peers laughed at you for it, so you tucked up that dream, quiet as a newborn mouse, and kept it warm inside the core of your chest, fed with scraps. You never left home without a camera in your bag until you left home for university: you, an unconventiional boy from a flyover state, landed squarely in sunny Los Angeles to major in Photography at California Institute of the Arts. You had no idea how that city would come to define you.

Over the next four years, you worked hard to find a voice, but moreover, an opportunity. Something to define you and help make a name for yourself—a moment in time you could capture, could hold up like a mirror to the world, but that proved difficult. You often drove the 45 minute commute between CalArts in Valencia to Los Angeles, looking for a break. Instead, a break found you. You were at the Studio City Farmers Market when you caught sight of a major celebrity... just as he got slapped in the face by his wife. You happened to get the shot—which you promptly uploaded to your Instagram. That was, in a way, the beginning of the end. With the Pulitzer so out of reach, you settled for capturing the city you were in, the people everyone were obsessed with. It was like a fun scavenger hunt. You studied your state’s privacy and harassment laws and from there it was easy to apply your technical training to this task, which made your photographs stand out. Your photos evoked narrative tension, which made them easier for agents to sell to tabloids and websites. After college, you landed an agent at Bauer-Griffin and moved to Los Angeles. Your Instagram followers are through the roof, but still no one knows your name outside the paparazzi circles. It’s hardly the change you wanted to make, but you’re good at your job. Your latest personal exploit is following up on the Grace Lowery scandals: her clearly impending breakdown will make you a killing.

EXPLORATION:

There’s that part of you that’s still superstitious, still conspiracy theorist, but if only for your endless ability to wonder what if. You ask a lot of questions. You aren’t a tin-hatter, but ‘normal’ isn’t a word you’d want to use to describe yourself—you don’t want to die average, mediocre. It’s not a desire for fame so much as a desire for the unknown, a desire to reach out and touch one thing no one else has ever touched before. To find something unique in a series of monotonies. Even stars burn out and celebrities fade, their dramas lackluster as they reveal to be real, flawed people like everyone else. You even call a few of them friends, dated one once. You’ll hustle and compete with the best, enjoying the respect and notoriety, but somehow still feel unfulfilled. But now, with all the rumours of angels and demons walking the earth—maybe you’ll finally get what you’ve been chasing after. Remember, though, that for as tall as you might stand, you will cast an even longer shadow.

It’s common to talk about tabbies as if they represent a cat breed. But they don’t. In fact, the word tabby denotes a coat pattern. And they don’t represent just one breed; the pattern is common to many breeds.

The origin of the word tabby has an uncertain history. Some claim the name is associated with a type of striped, patterned silk called Atabi made in Attabiah in the Middle East. Others claim that it comes from the translation of the French phrase “striped silk taffeta,” the root of which is tabis, meaning “a rich watered silk.”

Tabbies come in many different colors, including brown, gray and a variety of red shades often called orange, ginger or marmalade. Some have stripes and others spots and many a combination of the two. You can tell what color a tabby is by looking at the color of his stripes and tip of his tail.

The tabby pattern is determined by the agouti gene, which causes the individual hairs to have bands of light and heavy pigmentation, and the tabby gene, which denotes the type of tabby patterns, namely stripes, blotches or spots of hairs of solid color.

Research done by feline geneticists Carlos Driscoll and Leslie Lyons at the beginning of this millennium confirmed five genetic clusters, or lineages, of wildcats from various parts of the world (such as Africa, Europe, China, Central Asia and the Middle East) and dating back some 10,000 years to be the ancestors of today’s ubiquitous domestic tabbies. And, it’s easy to understand how a coat with stripes and spots could camouflage well into natural surroundings.

1. The classic tabby coat, sometimes called blotched, has wide, dark stripes curving over the flanks and the shoulders and three large stripes running from the shoulder blades to the base of the tail. It’s often likened to a marble cake.

4. The fourth tabby coat pattern is called ticked or agouti. The coat on the body has almost no stripe. However, the legs, tail and face sport very thin stripes.

This is where legend pushes genetics aside with these intriguing notions as to how these markings came about.

The prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam, was an acknowledged cat lover. It is said that the M marking on the forehead of the tabby cat was created when he rested his hand on the brow of his favorite cat.

Christians believe that when newborn baby Jesus wouldn’t stop crying, a cat climbed into the manger and started to purr, sending him off to sleep. In gratitude, the Virgin Mary marked the cat’s face with the first letter of her name.

A non-religious version suggests that the M is a set of frown lines, the result of a cat staring at a mousehole in concentration, waiting for a mouse to emerge.

Tabby cat personality traits

When it comes to personality traits, tabbies are considered friendly, happy-go-lucky cats, intelligent, sassy, very affectionate and wonderful companions. Red tabbies, often called orange, ginger and marmalade tabbies, can be feisty and bossy. But this trait is linked to coat color (as in fiery red) and not to the tabby pattern.

No matter the science behind tabbies, if you’re a cat person, you’ve undoubtedly been enchanted by a tabby cat, whether it’s your own fabulous feline, a tabby that “works” in a local store or even a cartoon tabby such as Garfield who identifies with the very human trait of hating Mondays.

1. Garfield is the world’s most famous cartoon orange tabby.

2. The first Algonquin Cat was an orange tabby that hotelier Frank Case named Rusty. The cat was a stray and had wandered into the hotel seeking refuge from the rain. He was renamed Hamlet by actor John Barrymore, who had played the Danish prince on Broadway. All the male Algonquin cats since have been named Hamlet, and the current feline is Hamlet VIII.

It was his dying wish that a marmalade-colored tabby with four white socks and a white bib and named Jock should reside in perpetuity at Chartwell, his ancestral home in Kent, England. The incumbent cat at Chartwell is Jock IV and visited by ailurophiles from around the world.

6. Morris, an orange tabby, became the world’s first spokescat for 9Lives cat food and has been one of the most recognizable tabby faces in the United States since 1969. The current spokescat is the fifth to represent the brand.

This hotel is so beautiful, surrounded by so many peacocks with their colourful glossy feathers. This wedding booking last around 3 hours. Although it was short, we captured enough of their joy and happiness. There were altogether 900 photos needed to be culled! We ended up delivered 600 to them.
