1 Tarot Deck

Your first deck does not have to be fancy. For years I used the classic Rider Waite tarot because I wanted to get to know the cards with all their interpretations before I expanded out to different layouts and designs. If you can’t get a tarot deck right away, use the internet. Start with the Major Arcana cards and get familiar with their look and definitions. Then add additional suits when you start to familiarize yourself. 

2 Candles

Your candle collection can grow overtime. If you are just starting out grab some basic white pillars or my absolute favorite candles are tea lights. Mostly because they are adorable and you can set them around in a circle and use as many as you like.

3 Quartz Crystal(s)

Crystals are like candles in that your collection for them will grow over time. If you are just starting out, pick a simple clear quartz chunk you can set out in your personal space and began connecting to that energy. Eventually you can add to your crystal collection a little at a time when you feel drawn to a particular crystal type.

4 Notebook 

Any notebook or papers or binder full of papers. Doesn’t have to look like anything special but you’ll need a place to take notes, write your thoughts, and jot down what worked and what didn’t work for you. 

5 Incense

Incense is a great way to elevate the vibe before any spell work and cleanse your space. Choose any incense for this.

6 Moon Water

A great tool to have for cleansing and connection. Make you own with a simple DIY recipe on the next full moon. Reference HERE

7 Sacred Space

I know how difficult this can be especially with little kids, small shared living spaces or just small spaces in general. It took me YEARS before I had enough room to set up an actual dedicated space just for witchcraft. But even if you have little to no room, make a small temporary area from time to time where you can set up your offerings or just where you can place your items and look at them. It’ll help you stay connected to your energy and purpose.

8 Favorite Essential Oil

Start with one and pick a scent you love. My favorite is Jasmine or Rose. But I love a musky scent too so I’m not really helpful. Use essential oils to anoint candles, wear as a personal scent or during meditation to lift your energy.

9 Salt

Used for protection and cleansing. This is a super easy go to tool that almost everybody has and is very easily accessible. 

10 Internet 

Instagram, Pinterest, Google, are all great resources to help you research and learn more about witchcraft. Books are always my fave but the internet has really opened up a whole new space for witches online and a community of people you can learn and grow from. <3 (as always don’t believe every single thing online but there is no harm in starting your research on the internet)

So I’m a ~babywitch~, like super new to everything witch related. 

I, like many new witches, became interested in witchcraft after witchtok found its way on my for you page. I’m not entirely new to the craft, however. I’ve been using a tarot deck for a while, but was using it without proper protection put in place and didn’t treat it as something that serious, because I’m sceptical towards things like magic.

For now, I’m just researching anything and everything witch-related, and I thought it would be a fun idea to share my journey with tumblr. Even if I don’t end up sticking with it, I hope my journey can help someone else because lord knows witchcraft is very intimidating when first starting out.

Not all Tarot Readers are created equal🤦🏻‍♀️ 🔮I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve been scrolling through reels or TikTok and see “intuitive” readers blatantly ignore the true meaning of tarot cards and give false readings and horrible counsel. With that said here are some warning signs to watch out for when it comes to choosing a reader: 👀 The individual claims to be only a “intuitive” reader. Yes intuition is part of a reading however, it doesn’t change the cards universal and ancient meanings. 👀 The individual doesn’t respect the ethics of divination and messages you randomly out of the blue claiming that their guides sent them and YOU need to purchase a reading because of a ridiculous reason like you’re be cursed (yes I’ve heard of this). 👀 The individual seems to not be genuine/professional and has no reviews from previous clients. 👀The individual tells you that you must purchase a reading due to you being under “psychic attack” and you need their guidance. 🔮Overall, do your research. There’s lots of a tarot readers out there but we are not all created equal. Tarot reading is a continuous study and a learned skill. It takes years to master it. Learning you’re a Witch: My Journey Part One

Let’s just start off with the fact that, I really have no clue what I am doing here. My brain has put away everything I learned about new age religions and witchcraft and right now I am just wading through the old dusty boxes of my past.

I was not raised in a coven, nor was I raised in a strict religious household either. I was given quite a bit of freedom growing up to explore my spirituality. I dabbled in evangelical Christianity, Buddhism, my extended family’s chosen religion of Catholasism and eventually found myself holding a Book of Shadows in a store called “The Green Dragon” when I was 15.

Many things clicked for me that day as I scanned the pages of the book, so I bought it. I took it home tore through it and when I came out the other end, I declared myself a witch.

Now, at 15, I didn’t get into witchcraft for the reasons I am here today. I thought it would be different, set me apart, scare people even. I was right. I hadn’t counted on my Devout Catholic grandmother, who as the matriarch of the family, held a lot of power over the family as a whole. She declared me evil and going to hell for even the thought of taking on such a blasphemous perception of the world. Many fights between myself, my mother and my grandmother took place, for months.

I remember my mom being sad. I remember hearing the conversations between her and my grandmother, ever trying to be the peace keeper. I remember her trying to explain to me why my grandmother felt this way, and gently trying to nudge me to believe this was just a phase, to give my grandmother the win on this. But I also remember hearing her scream at her own mother; yelling about how much my grandmothers words hurt me and were effecting me. Why couldn’t my grandmother just let me be. They would go weeks without speaking...

Ultimately, I relented and gave up the craft.
