I've seen a lot of ideas about who or what Verna truly is. Most have compared her to Death or the Grimm Reaper because she caused most of (some would say all of) the deaths of the Ushers. I don't fully agree with this simply because Death doesn't make deals and Death doesn't stop for or hurry for anyone. Death comes for all things in their time without emotion There is no reason for death to have offered them anything. There is also no reason for death to offer the kindness of a peaceful end.

The other idea I see the most is that Verna is a sort of crossroads demon. This idea does make more sense to me considering the kind of people she had been seen with throughout time and the deal she made with Roderick and Madeleine. Three things about that don't fit to me. First the way she trys to ease things for the children (except Fredrick but fuck him), she gives them a chance to walk away and have peaceful deaths closer to what she gave Lenore. Which brings me to point two, Lenore. What reason would a crossroads demon have to share all the good that Lenore had done and the lives she would save before giving her a peaceful instant death? The third thing is when the deal was first made, Roderick ask if its his soul he would be trading. Verna says souls aren't real but "If they were you already sold your earlier tonight when you killed Rufus Griswold". If this was a demon what did they gain from this deal?

I believe Verna is neither demon nor Death but the Devil herself. Verna is the fallen angel Lucifer. What she offered the Ushers, what she seems to have offered those before is the ultimate test of free will. What would you do with unlimited wealth or power? She never forced them or manipulated them. Every evil thing they did was entirely their choice. She even points this out to Madeleine when they meet and talks about all the terrible things humanity does to one another without her having to interfere. Then there is her decision with Pym about his trip. She says she came "topside" to see what they did. She knows the people they sacrificed along the way, even what part he played in these deaths. She even laments the injustice that corruptions like Fourtonato never face any real consequences for their actions. When she showed Roderick his true legacy she makes it clear those deaths where his alone, she played no part. But most of all her attempt at mercy for the children. They're doomed to day anyway but she tries to ease their pain. Taking Lenore seems to break her heart. She tries to explain to Perry that he's done enough. She gives the others chances to be honest, make amends or just walk away and be a peace. Exect Fredrick (that piece of shit) he made his choice the minute he starts mistreating his wife. Verna never interacted with him until his death because the decision was already made. The worse their behavior, the less of a chance she gave them for peace. She also never interacts with Auggie. He sees her but she doesn't offer him anything or even speak to him. She knows he would never make a deal like that.

There is a karmic balance to everything Verna does. One that fit the role of a reaper or demon. But the angel who was banished for questioning GOD? The angel who questioned free will itself. The angle made devil that everyone blames for the every bad decision they make. That seems like someone who would be interested in how things would play out and still be disappointed they didn't make better choices.

So Madeline would love new years I think. Like, Roderick would always think of it as both a secret and victorious night after 1979, but I feel like Madeline would always get this “I feel like the car is running yet” sensation, because even if she doesn’t remember the kiss with Verna she remembers something.

Maybe it’s a phantom sensation, an odd daydream, or a very specific sort of spirit that she’s drinking, but every new years it comes around, and she is actually able to enjoy it without suspicion, aggression, or a need to conquer it. She just lets it be, and new years, specifically that few minute window, is when she can enjoy it.

Verna probably gets the same feeling, but she knows what it is, and has even checked in on Madeline during a few New Year’s parties. Madeline didn’t know that though, it just fell into her brief window of “let it happen because I left the car running and no one is here to tell me otherwise.”

Anyway, this felt like a fitting final head canon for 2023, Happy New Years!

A flutter. That’s the first sign Verna gets. A flutter of wings, then, a coo. Soft, hopeful. A new beginning, one taken willingly by the other woman. Another soft coo, another flutter of wings then she lands. The girl steps from the shadows where the Dove landed. New beginnings were rare in her world, but Verna beams as she sees the girl. Tamerlane, her sweet, tragic, girl. She looks happier, here. The marks of the past aren’t obvious not to everyone, but she sees them, the silver lines where Tamerlane’s body healed in the after, her body empty of blood had healed, turning her from angel to Dove, the balance of Verna’s darkened soul, a Dove for a Raven alone. Tamerlane reaches for her now, emerging into the sun, pale skin marked just barely with silver, eyes still silver-blue with the past. New Beginnings. Verna thinks the words as she steps to pull the girl close, letting their lips meet, watching the scarring fade entirely, the girl’s eyes returning to the right shade. “Verna…” “Hello Beautiful.” Verna murmurs, tucking hair from Tamerlane’s face. The soft copper curling under her touch. “My Dove.” “My Raven.” The words seem to surprise Tamerlane even as she smiles. “You chose… me?” “I did.” Verna murmurs. “I will always choose you, my deal breaking darling.”

Scholomance (A Deadly Education)

definitely had to research this one (and put it on my tbr. this sounds so freaking cool????)

so i have two thoughts about this:

1- that this would make a really cool au for verna's canon universe, where instead of packs each of the alphas run an enclave (the packs already refer to themselves and each other by their location names, "London," "DC," "Paris" (and sometimes just by their country names), so that would work out really well). i think verna would have one hell of a body count on graduation day, she's full of rage and damn it, she's going to Use It. and she'd be a lot like el, where she wants to keep her classmates safe, and isn't willing to let anything happen to any of them. absolute mama bear. or wolf. mama wolf. anyway.

2 - book canon-wise, this was a little harder for me to figure out, bc of the nature of the setting, the way the kids are whisked away to this school for like four years, but i think if verna were to interact with the main cast, it'd be something like: she runs her own enclave (probably DC), or maybe she'd be part of the new york one? (also i'd have to really read the books for more specifics), but i feel like she def be rooting for el, and also she'd still have a body count. she's probably known for ripping mals to shreds with her teeth and not being afraid of anything, really, even if she should be. also probably makes puns about maw-mouths. (should she? maybe not. does she anyway? yes.)
