not doa related but after the flop that is the borderlands movie (how it even got greenlit in the first place is BEYOND me), I am actually worried for the Duke Nukem movie’s chances, and especially more so after the whole embracer group thing fucking collapsed after their merger deal fell through.

Finished Mobile Suit Gundam: the Witch from Mercury and oh my god that series finale. One of the best I’ve seen in a while, probably the only one where I feel satisfied by the ending for the main ship.

(Spoilers behind the cut, plus some rambling as a casual Gundam fan - mostly of Wing/SEED/00 for comparison)

First off - explicit confirmation that SuleMio got married during the time skip? Can’t believe Bamco really said “Finale airs close enough to the end of June, let’s not only have both of them survive, but we’ll have them get married.”

I know there’s some people who think it wasn’t overt enough but if you ask me, this is the sort of ending Gundam does for their main ships. Like yeah Kira/Flay got pretty explicit but she wasn’t the End Game girl for him, that was Lacus and Kira/Lacus is super chaste in comparison (and we’re not going to get into the potential Unfortunate Implications of that here). But even then, in the SEED Destiny remaster finale all we get is a Big Damn Hug for them. The most we ever got for Heero/Relena was the moment where Heero tells her he’ll take out the leaders of both the Earth and Space Colony factions to lay the world at Relena’s feet for her to lead into a new era of peace. (There’s a reason the BL ships are way more popular in Wing fic than the canonical one! 😂) And as for 00’s Setsuna? He merged with an alien consciousness and essentially gets Put On A Bus for 50 years and reunites with his Princess when she’s 81 and blind.

Which brings me to my next point - because the lead writer for G Witch worked on Valvrave (trigger warning for sexual assault if you want to watch Valvrave - it was a late night anime and it showed), I was worried they’d either kill off Miorine in the series finale or put Suletta in a coma (highly possible with how Gundam technology works in universe, plus all the warning signs around Calibarn) to keep things “nebulous” between them and give the writers an out for not having a F/F ship final couple. And it’s not like Gundam doesn’t have precedent for that either - see the Zeta Gundam finale and what happened with Kamille (not sure if that ending got changed with the movies).

But no, we get an “and they lived happily ever after, making their dreams a reality one step at a time” for both girls. I couldn’t believe my ears when Eri referred to herself as Miorine’s sister in law. I started crying when I saw the rings, not just because that was Suletta’s dream, but also the fact that it meant they got married, and that they’ve just been put on a level above most other (Straight) canonical Gundam ships. (Seriously I can’t name another canonical Gundam ship where the characters met, dated, and got married in the course of their own series.) It also meant all the times Miorine reached out to Prospera by saying they’ll be family wasn’t just lip service but had some very real weight behind it. That the Ship Tease moments were meant to be real romantic relationship development beyond the sort of “fake engagement” set up they had in the beginning. And somehow just by doing that it also means they had a much stronger and better fleshed out relationship than what I’m used to for on screen main Gundam ships.

So there you have it. My (not so) hot take on the G Witch finale.

Final rating: 🌈/10, thank you for not Fridging/Coma-ing either Suletta nor Miorine, would watch again, would definitely buy and play their Super Robot Taisen debut game (assuming I have a platform to play it on). Second season could’ve been better with an extra ep in there especially with all the rapid fire politics and side switching, but at the same time I feel like it might’ve slowed things down a bit much so I’m happy with what we got. Also, Super Robot Taisen debut when, Bamco?

okay when i saw the headline that there was another thg book coming i was cynically kind of like "oh man do we really need yet another one is there really more we can get out of the series" but seeing that it's going to focus on haymitch's games i am hesitantly excited. that is like the one part of the world that i feel like could use its own whole book at this point lol

Oohhh in the post I just reblogged someone in the notes pointed out (in their tags) that Barbie being paraded as a feminist movie is false given the premise being male-driven and the conclusion being akin to “it’s the woman’s fault”. And from everything I’ve seen/heard I can’t say they’re wrong. The barbies mistreated the kens who then mistreated them back and then they came together and decided “let’s not do that anymore❤️”. which. MAYBE this would have been a concept that worked with another character, but this is BARBIE. Barbie has always represented this lesson. The movie required breaking down EVERYTHING about Barbie and her ideals and personality to create this weird version that’s inconsiderate & arguably daft was a ridiculous choice. Nothing excited me about this movie since its announcement because I knew whatever they were going to they to do would involve decimating years of proper messaging. And it sucks that so many girls are only gonna know this Barbie. The Barbie I had growing up had the slogan “you can be anything you wanna be (what do you wanna be?)”. The Barbie I grew up with was sweet, kind, and self-reliant, never once feeling inferior to her male counterparts NOR mistreating anyone else. The Barbie I grew up with was everything they stripped this Barbie of. The Barbie I had was a ballerina, a dreamer, a fairy, a mermaid, a friend, a sister, a girlfriend, an actress, a singer. Barbie life in the dreamhouse would have made a great movie though idk why they wouldn’t want to take it in that direction🤷🏻‍♀️

Yknow one thing I hate to do is compare mechas given they’re all pretty different even putting the clear influence a lot have on each other aside and I don’t like the idea that I’ve seen a lot of mecha fans subscribe to where “if you like this one show you HAVE to like these other ones” but this is less of a comparison thing especially because I’m not petty or anything since it’s just something I thought about:

Mazinger v Getter when it comes to their recognition tends to boggle my mind a bit. Since it feels like there are more dedicated Getter fans around that talk about it than Mazinger fans, but Mazinger is more recognizable to the point it gets more funded stuff than Getter.

I was thinking about this when I was watching Mazinkaiser, and I can’t confirm this but I found it interesting that it almost (felt) like this ova spawned out of Getter making a comeback before Mazinger did, since Armageddon came before and was massive hit, than was followed up with a game + shin vs neo by the time Mazinkaiser was made. Like they even got Armas art director to work on it and the studio doing it was Brains Base who made the getter OVAs.

And in terms of recently all the stuff with Grendizer, which I know was SUPPOSED to get another an anime way before this, is now finally getting something coincidentally after Getter Robo Arc. And everyone is already pointing out between the two Grendizer looks waaay better then Arc so it’s clear it has more money put into it, yet I wonder if Arc didn’t happen if they would bother to touch Grendizer since Arc was them also finally giving the Getter team who NEVER got to be in a anime- well, a anime. And now the most neglected pilot apart of Mazingers universe is getting his own show.

I understand why Mazinger is more known and funded since it was the first self piloted mecha and something Go Nagai, a man who arguably changed the industry a lot, made so his works are always gonna be rebooted for the sake of memory, where as Getter sorta lives in Nagai’s shadow sadly even if Ishikawa memory is respected, but I feel like almost Getter is the one to test if things will work and then they’ll see if they can do stuff with Mazinger again.

Or maybe it’s just two coincidences and we’re just going through a long coming mecha renaissance of older properties of the genre, but I’m still rotating it heavily.

i will be honest though i feel like the twst anime was announced way too early for them to just never give us any news on it?? like i only even got into this game in february of this year but i remember thinking to myself "hey wait, wasn't there supposed to be an anime for that twisted wonderland game? did that get canceled or something?" months before then. and looking it up, i see it was apparently announced on october 14th 2021--almost two years ago now. so what is going on with it! :( i'm not asking for it to be released immediately, just for some kind of update! and i also wish they had said before that twst fest would mainly consist of a q&a with the voice actors so everyone wouldn't have gotten so hyped and started expecting huge news.

Now it's just a matter of hours until the announcement of the director of the Bendy movie happens. It's crazy to think about. Of all the things we've had in the last few days regarding Bendy, this is clearly the most exciting, and the most scary to me, funny enough.

I mean, this is some of the big news! The first big news about the movie since the announcement of the project! It's exciting.

But it's also something that's both scary, and game-changing (for lack of a better term).

If I had to explain my feelings about the movie so far, it would be: I'm looking forward to it, and I want to see more of where it goes. It's something that I think the idea, in and of itself, is pretty cool! And how could it not be, right? A Bendy movie. Something that for the last 7 (almost 8) years was something that only existed as an idea in someone's head, or as a fan-made project (there are 3 of those, btw). And the fact that we're actually going to get a real one, that's actually going to be shown on the big screen, is exciting! And up until now, we didn't have much information about the movie other than what the devs had already said before, so up until now, the sky was the limit in terms of possibilities regarding the movie. Anything was possible. (And in a way, it still is.)

The announcement of the director is the first big piece of news about the movie that will set the tone for what we can expect from this project. That will determine how excited we should be about this project, or that will determine what kind of things we can expect from it. A game changer, as I said. A director is (as far as I know) an important piece in the development of a movie, and depending on who it is, it can make you excited for the Bendy movie, or discouraged. It's something that will change a lot of people's minds about this movie.

Depending on the news, the following could happen:

It will make you much more excited for the movie

It won't make you as excited, but it will still keep you interested

It will be something that will make you indifferent, and you will probably have to wait for more to determine how you will feel

It won't make you more excited (or the excitement will be drop)

It will make you give up.

I may be exaggerating, but I think these are the best ways to represent the results of the news that will happen in the hours ahead.

I know that at the end of the day this will not 100% determine how the movie will turn out, and obviously we will have to wait for more information on this to know better. But as I said, it is the first big thing about this project that will shape our vision and expectations for it.

A while back (2 months ago), Puppet Guy said he met with a "famous and brilliant individual who really seems to get Bendy" and in the last few days he has said that the director of the film (assuming it is the same individual he referred to in the past) is "a very creative and visually masterful storyteller who is deeply committed to staying true to Bendy and bringing our creations to life in a stunning way".

Now, this isn't very helpful, imo. This could apply to a lot of people, and it doesn't help to determine who the director might be and whether they are actually the right person.

But hopefully Puppet Guy is right. I doubt (and I remember him saying this before) that they wouldn't give the keys to their franchise to some nobody to make a movie and be done with it (not those exact words, of course, but the sentiment is the same). I really hope they chose the right person for the job, and that this project is in good hands. Again, it is only by having more information and eventually watching the movie that we will know if the decision was right. In the end, we will have to wait and see.

I think the best way to explain the feelings for this big announcement would be "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst". I would say that is a phrase that represents part of my feelings well.

I won't be there frame 1 when the announcement comes out, so I'll be a little late when I check the news. But you can be sure that this will be the first (or second) thing I do when I wake up. Depending on how it goes, this will either be the news that makes my day better, it will be the news that doesn't change anything, or it will make my day worse. Or all 3 at once. Again, we'll see.

Anyway, that was my ramblings pre-release of the Bendy movie director's announcement in the middle of the night. if you are reading this after the announcement uuuuuhhhhhhhhh hi.

So I’ve been enjoying the Disney vs. DeSantis memes as much as anyone, but like. I do feel like a lot of people who had normal childhoods are missing some context to all this.

I was raised in the Bible Belt in a fairly fundie environment. My parents were reasonably cool about some things, compared to the rest of my family, but they certainly had their issues. But they did let me watch Disney movies, which turned out to be a point of major contention between them and my other relatives.

See, I think some people think this weird fight between Disney and fundies is new. It is very not new. I know that Disney’s attempts at inclusion in their media have been the source of a lot of mockery, but what a lot of people don’t understand is that as far as actual company policy goes, Disney has actually been an industry leader for queer rights. They’ve had policies assuring equal healthcare and partner benefits for queer employees since the early 90s.

I’m not sure how many people reading this right now remember the early 90s, but that was very much not industry standard. It was a big deal when Disney announced that non-married queer partners would be getting the same benefits as the married heterosexual ones.

Like — it went further than just saying that any unmarried partners would be eligible for spousal benefits. It straight-up said that non-same-sex partners would still need to be married to receive spousal benefits, but because same-sex partners couldn’t do that, proof that they lived together as an established couple would be enough.

In other words, it put long-term same-sex partners on a higher level than opposite-sex partners who just weren’t married yet. It put them on the exact same level as heterosexual married partners.

They weren’t the first company ever to do this, but they were super early. And they were certainly the first mainstream “family-friendly” company to do it.

Conservatives lost their damn minds.

Protests, boycotts, sermons, the whole nine yards. I can’t tell you how many books about the evils of Disney my grandmother tried to get my parents to read when I was a kid.

When we later moved to Florida, I realized just how many queer people work at Disney — because historically speaking, it’s been a company that has guaranteed them safety, non-discrimination, and equal rights. That’s when I became aware of their unofficial “Gay Days” and how Christians would show up from all over the country to protest them every year. Apparently my grandmother had been upset about these days for years, but my parents had just kind of ignored her.

Out of curiosity, I ended up reading one of the books my grandmother kept leaving at our house. And friends — it’s amazing how similar that (terrible, poorly written) rhetoric was to what people are saying these days. Disney hires gay pedophiles who want to abuse your children. Disney is trying to normalize Satanism in our beautiful, Christian America. 

Just tons of conspiracy theories in there that ranged from “a few bad things happened that weren’t actually Disney’s fault, but they did happen” to “Pocahontas is an evil movie, not because it distorts history and misrepresents indigenous life, but because it might teach children respect for nature. Which, as we all know, would cause them all to become Wiccans who believe in climate change.”

Like — please, take it from someone who knows. This weird fight between fundies and Disney is not new. This is not Disney’s first (gay) rodeo. These people have always believed that Disney is full of evil gays who are trying to groom and sexually abuse children.

The main difference now is that these beliefs are becoming mainstream. It’s not just conservative pastors who are talking about this. It’s not just church groups showing up to boycott Gay Day. Disney is starting to (reluctantly) say the quiet part out loud, and so are the Republicans. Disney is publicly supporting queer rights and announcing company-supported queer events and the Republican Party is publicly calling them pedophiles and enacting politically driven revenge.

This is important, because while this fight has always been important in the history of queer rights, it is now being magnified. The precedent that a fight like this could set is staggering. For better or for worse, we live in a corporation-driven country. I don’t like it any more than you do, and I’m not about to defend most of Disney’s business practices. But we do live in a nation where rights are largely tied to corporate approval, and the fact that we might be entering an age where even the most powerful corporations in the country are being banned from speaking out in favor of rights for marginalized people… that’s genuinely scary.

Like… I’ll just ask you this. Where do you think we’d be now, in 2023, if Disney had been prevented from promising its employees equal benefits in 1994? That was almost thirty years ago, and look how far things have come. When I looked up news articles for this post from that era, even then journalists, activists, and fundie church leaders were all talking about how a company of Disney’s prominence throwing their weight behind this movement could lead to the normalization of equal protections in this country.

The idea of it scared and thrilled people in equal parts even then. It still scares and thrills them now.

I keep seeing people say “I need them both to lose!” and I get it, I do. Disney has for sure done a lot of shit over the years. But I am begging you as a queer exvangelical to understand that no. You need Disney to win. You need Disney to wipe the fucking floor with these people.

Right now, this isn’t just a fight between a giant corporation and Ron DeSantis. This is a fight about the right of corporations to support marginalized groups. It’s a fight that ensures that companies like Disney still can offer benefits that a discriminatory government does not provide. It ensures that businesses much smaller than Disney can support activism.

Hell, it ensures that you can support activism.

The fight between weird Christian conspiracy theorists and Disney is not new, because the fight to prevent any tiny victory for marginalized groups is not new. The fight against the normalization of othered groups is not new.

That’s what they’re most afraid of. That each incremental victory will start to make marginalized groups feel safer, that each incremental victory will start to turn the tide of public opinion, that each incremental victory will eventually lead to sweeping law reform.

They’re afraid that they won’t be able to legally discriminate against us anymore.

So guys! Please. This fight, while hilarious, is also so fucking important. I am begging you to understand how old this fight is. These people always play the long game. They did it with Roe and they’re doing it with Disney.

We have! To keep! Pushing back!
