So if we presume that planes continue to evolve as we saw with Kamigawa, does that mean that given their culture that New Capenna would, theoretically, be able to have gangs based on the families reenact West Side Story.
Could you envision more modern Capenna??
Do y'all want me to get into the weird poly thing the family heads have going on? Because this is how you get me to get into that.
Tumblr media
The Obscura have always tread the fine line between "totally legit psychics" and "scam psychics". The invention of things like TV and phones would only exacerbate that already-existing problem.
The invention of new things would also open the doorway to more "methods" for the Obscura to use in their various divinations. They already had cards, crystal balls, and the like before, but someone invents the pendulum (only $9.99 if you call this definitely tolled number!) and it's all the rage for a few years among Obscura agents.
Raffine thinks it's funny as shit and has her own "psychic hotline" for the particularly wealthy to use.
The invention of more modern technology would also improve illusions and sleight-of-hand tricks. You can't tell me the Obscura wouldn't be all over that. Sure, they could just use their own magic, but if there's an easier and cheaper way, why not add that to your repertoire?
Conning people is just so easy in the modern age is what I'm saying.
Tumblr media
The Maestros are going to be all over modern art movements, okay? Let's just make that one clear. Opening up the doorway to different types of art (such as pop art, which was popular in the 1940s to 1950s in the United States) leads to a broader range of museums with their own unique flairs.
While Xander hasn't been a fan of every art movement, he does get what they're going for and respects the grind, because holy shit they had to invent all sorts of new techniques and technology to make these pieces. He also has a soft spot for a few of the newer ones, but you'll never hear him say it aloud. (And yes, I'm saying his canon death didn't happen, fight me out behind the Denny's.)
Also, murder has gotten more easy! Or at least more interesting.
Tumblr media
Of all of the families, the Riveteers would change the least. They're still a construction-based union, they just have cranes and bulldozers now. They've stayed in business due to demolishing and rebuilding as the years have gone on.
Ziatora still rules this mighty empire of loyal workers, directing her Riveteers on construction sites even as technology makes things faster. Though she does eventually have to invent OSHA because of how many of her workers she has to keep catching.
Tumblr media
The existence of frat boys shows that the spirit of the Cabaretti is alive and well in the modern time, even if druidry has fallen to the wayside. A core foundation of the mortal experience is having fun, and the Cabaretti are still here to provide!
They also have their own version of the Michelin Stars going on. Like...I don't know, the Vantoleone Stars, after the Mezzio base that Jetmir refuses to let go of.
To give Jetmir credit, though, he's gotten a lot better about security for the revelries, in case there's a repeat of the Adversary-Crescendo incident. Of all of the family heads, he's adapted to the modern era the fastest.
Tumblr media
Given everything going on above, yes, everyone still needs lawyers and security. That's where the Brokers still step in, though it's a lot more decentralized as different offices try to make their mark. Everyone still pays lip service to Falco Spara, but anything beyond that is up in the air.
Spara's still got sleeper agents all over the place, but he's a lot more guarded nowadays. Pretty much everyone is waiting for blood in the water to take him down from the top and put themselves in his place, so he's retreated from the public eye in favor of double- and triple-checking his contracts for loopholes. Even one could knock him from his perch. Rumor has it that the only people in contact with him anymore are his second-in-command and the other family heads.
...I almost feel bad for all the puns in this section.
Tumblr media
As for everyone else, well.
The government and law system are still auctions rather than functional. (Though that's not too different from our modern day, huh?) Generally, as long as you get a mean enough Broker for a lawyer, your case is as good as won (or thrown out) regardless of your actual guilt status.
The angels are hanging around, adapting to either join the crime families (though it's very awkward between them and the demons) or creating their own merry bands of misfits. A good number of them work for the various newspapers, doing what they can to either help or hinder as they see fit - and according to their central color, of course.
Efforts to get back down to Old Capenna and see what's down there now have some public support, because enough time has passed that people have forgotten (other than Spara, who never forgets) what used to be down there. It's a free-for-all, as it requires a different set of survival skills from New Capenna, and no current attempts to rebuild down there have been successful with all of the monsters still running around.
Time continues to march forward, and so do the mortals of New Capenna. The primary question raised is how long the angels, demons, and avatars can keep up.

Why is the return to New Cappena an if?
Because I don’t know we’ll definitely return. The initial set, and world, had a lackluster reception. That doesn’t mean we won’t return. I just don’t think we’ll for sure return.

Commanders of New Capenna
Another weekend, another brand-new release from me. This time it’s back to the schedule as normal, with the results of last month’s Monster Popularity Contest (a monthly patreon poll where supporters vote to see their favorite monsters, NPCs, and other enemies come to life.) These five friendly mugs are the face commanders from the commander decks released alongside Streets of New Cappena. Each one serves a different family, and plays a different role in the glamorous politics of this 30′s-themed fantasy setting.
If you’d like early access to more content like this, the ability to vote in polls like the one mentioned above, and other patron-exclusive releases like monthly subclasses and more, you can sign up to support me for as little as $2/month!

I keep looking at what's been revealed of Duskmourn and I keep wondering why Duskmourn just does not resonate with me. Like, I enjoyed Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and adore Streets of New Cappena, so I don't think it's the quality of dipping a little into recognizable technologies or more modern aesthetics. Maybe its just the quality of how contemporary Duskmourn feels by comparison. Cause like, the pastiche is calling back to the tech and aesthetics of 80s horror, pop culture, and, most importantly, fashion. It calls back to things that are recognizably "un-fantasy" if still hightened so as to be fantastical. I mean, Episode 1 of the stories starts out by describing what may as well be a suburb. It's something that's so linked to modern Americana that it's hard not to feel a sense of disonance between it and Magic.
This certainly makes a comparison to Neon Dynasty a little easier cause sure, Neon Dynasty has a sci fi aesthetic, but it's firmly rooted in aesthetics from fiction. It's got mechs and cyberpunk tropes and anime callbacks. Even when it dips into recognizably "Japanese" aesthetics, it's got a veneer to it that reads the same way as any generic fantasy does when it calls upon vaguely European "medieval" cities.
That still leaves New Cappena cause I mean. It's got cars! Guns! Sky scrapers! Its whole thing is Art Deco and the Americana of the Roaring 20s and Prohibition! Why do I still mesh with it, why does it still ring to me as Magic where Duskmourn really doesn't? Honestly, no idea. I could go down a line of argument that Art Deco was always its own kind of fiction, or question whether it's the fact that the aesthetic's more separated in time that makes me more comfortable in slotting New Capenna along other Magic settings in my brain. But I don't know, neither feels like a satisfying answer.
I could also talk about how Duskmourn feels a little too random-action-heroes-genre-bending-toy-collection-you-find-in-a-dollar-store for me, but that's another thing entirely.

I need to find a good basic land art to bling my Henzie deck out. I wish I liked the actual Streets of New Cappena basics, but that specific art deco vibe is just not for me.
Ideas?

So tell us about your new esper sphinx walker? 👀
@leafdrake-haven @thetabbybadger
For those of you who do not know I have been thinking of retiring my old nyxborn sphinx walker and replacing him with a new sphinx walker. I still love Niphorbis but his backstory is so complex and has such a feel of finality to it, I never know what to do with him.
My new panes-walker is named Anise she is a crime novelist from New Capenna, with ties to the Obscura.
Being from New Capenna her look is very much inspired by the nineteen twenties. She has that iconic bob cut from the era peeking out around a cloche hat. The fur around his neck is very thick and fluffy giving the illusion of a fur coat and she often wears a pearl necklace. By sphinx standers she would be consider a bit of a runt as from her head to her hunches she is maybe five seven, five eight? Her build is very much more house cat then big cat.
Her personality is also very atypical of a sphinx as she is chatty, bubbly and a bit of a nosey gossip. Anise herself often says she never made for a good sphinx. That being said she dose have the spices obsession with mysteries and riddles. Though she tends to philosophies on such mysteries less then she enjoys tugging at their strings until they unravel like a ball of yarn.
She is very much inspired by flappers and Agatha Christie.
Anise makes her living writing crime novels under a number of pen names, her most favors being the mysterious Tabitha Badgers. She never uses her real name as her novels are often based off the activates of the other crime families, she snoops out. Though ever since she got her spark Anise has been brining the stories of the multiverse back to New Cappena. Recently she has been writing a novel based on the Dragon Maze, recasting Tajic as a private investigator.
Magic wise Anise has the mind magic found on most of her species as well as the Obscura observation magic she uses to gather the information needed to write her novels. But Anise also uses a form a literary magic that lets her imbue properties onto things by writing on them with enchanted ink. Examples of which would be writing Melt on stone to turn it into lava, or light as a feather to turn a heavy burden into a light one.
Mechanically Anise makes both Inklings and clue tokens as well as having interactions with scrying and surveilling. The big thing Anise dose is shenanigans with keyword abilities, such as sharing them among creatures you control or making keyword tokens.

I liked both of today's stories. I really like them.
I loved what Nahiri was doing in this one and I love that, while they did stop her, nobody managed to kill her. I do wish that, since they were both compleated, she'd had a little nicer or more neutral things to say about Nissa, but I'll take any fight that they can walk away from. I am disappointed that Drana wasn't part of it (especially since Linvala was) but that's a small point.
While I don't think this was necessarily the intent, I also liked that we got to see two stories from New Cappena, so that it's part in the plot wasn't just resolved all at once. I like the fact that they got Artaxa by dropping a building on her, that's always a fun way to resolve things. I also like that we're actually seeing some non-planeswalkers doing some inter-planar travel.
Tomorrow is the last day of the story, and I'll admit to being worried about how it's going to go, but with only Lukka and Tamiyo being confirmed killed so far, I'm curious to see what's going to happen to Nissa. (Also, does anyone else find it weird that we haven't really touched on Theros yet at all? Like, we've got Phyrexian gods running around there, I'm not sure that arc is gonna be satisfyingly resolved if it's just a matter of "show up and kill them".)

I’ll Stop The World And Meld With You - Chimeric Winners
Bring your hands together (and then separate them, repeating this process as many times as desired) for this week's winners: @hypexion, @snugz, and @spooky-bard!
Abyssal Waltz (Aeon Chronicler + One With Nothing) - @hypexion
Tumblr media
In the fair workshop I believe you described this as "Draw, draw, draw-whoops", which, yeah. I will fully admit to being a bit of a sucker for Cards You Absolutely Do Not Want To Cast, No Thank You, and using One With Nothing as the metaphorical banana peel that sends this parade of card advantage into abrupt, slippery chaos brings me endless entertainment. I adore the flavor direction you took here as well, it feels absolutely natural to the card, even if I cannot envision the Aeon Chronicler or the monk guy on the Saviors of Kamigawa instant being particularly down to disco. If I had to critique anything, I might make it suspend four, if only because three (much more easily usable) cards for two mana seems like an appropriate rate given the impending and rather drastic Consequences. But yeah. Absolute home-run, I want to see someone cascade into this.
Volatile Fluxwurm (Panglacial Wurm + Averna, Chaos Bloom) - @snugz
On the other hand, I would very much like to see people cascade right past this. As the fairly clear yet eclectic love-child of two cards that seem to take the comprehensive rules more as suggestions than anything, I'm honestly impressed that this does Just Kinda Work, even if it is maybe a bit handwavey? I dunno, it makes more sense to me than Averna does honestly, and it definitely avoids the bizarre rules-headaches that can arise in situations involving Panglacial Wurm. I appreciate that there is just enough of The Great Snake of Judge Calls in here to make that connection understandable. Even though mechanically it is definitely much more Averna, the fact that it's a Wurm and you cast it at a wonky time feels like just enough to make it make sense. Being a Wurm that cares about cascading doesn't even feel especially out of place, given the existence of Wurms of the Enlisted variety. Fantastic stuff.
Determined Muckrakers (Village Bell-Ringer + Larder Zombie) - @spooky-bard
Tumblr media
While this is definitely among the more straightforward card-fusions submitted this week, I adore how you've constructed this chimera by taking two cards from two completely different factions of two completely different Innistrads and blended them into a beast which fits on Neither Of Those, Actually, It's A Collection of Skeevy Reporters From New Cappena Now. While it doesn't necessarily mechanically fit on the single set we've visited there all that flawlessly I could absolutely see this informing an archetype on some kind of return trip, without any real acknowledgement of the card's gothic horror heritage, and that's just gorgeous card design I think. More than anything this feels like a real Magic card moreso than A Response To A Fair Prompt and I think that's a good sign that you've done well here.
That'll be the winners for this week! Gotta say y'all made picking these Absolutely Excruciating, a very solid majority of your designs this week spent some amount of time in contention, and it pains me to no end that I can only pick six. Regardless, join me again at some point later today for the runners-up!

thinking about constance's apartments on the main planes he frequents...
He has a nice place in New Cappena's Mezzio, a nice and sensible apartment, as high as it gets before hitting Park Heights. Up on the corner with a decent commute to his office.
His apartment on Ravnica might be its own floating unit to ensure his privacy, and help keep the appearance of being an ellusive and eccentric rockstar lawyer with an ego too big for his career, law offices, or any sort of decent schedule. Probably has a direct line to some skycab company to take him to and from wherever.

Ohhh what if Ayara isn't an ally but Elesh Norn's replacement for Urabrask...? :/
Honestly, I have been radio silent for this exact reason. I didn't want to rain on any parades, but I have a very hard time believing wotc would actually give us anything to be hopeful about in regard to Urabrask.
While the fifth installment of the main MOM story has made me slightly more optimistic, I formed a bit of a personal theory after I saw the card art for Ayara.
For anybody who wants to be spared from my little raincloud of a headcanon/theory, this is your cue to keep scrolling.
Alright, so the first thing that made me pause about Ayara Furnace Queen was the fact that she's still referred to as a Queen. Urabrask has personally stated and been shown to have very little desire for hierarchy. He prefers to let everyone technically under his command do their own thing, sparing some very specific situations. I find it hard to believe Urabrask would be on peaceful terms with a "Queen".
Secondly, despite having burned tf out and not touched my fanfic in a hot minute, I have given a lot of thought to how a successful invasion of the multiverse would look. The one thing that I'm certain of is that Elesh Norn would need, for lack of a better word, governors. Norn can't even control one plane on her own and you're telling me she could run a whole multiverse in perfect harmony? Bull.
At the absolute minimum, she would need one underling on each plane directly reporting to her just to keep tabs on everything. Compleating Ayara and leaving her power over the plane intact seems like a very efficient way to create such an underling. Why bother making a new system of government when you can just swipe the one already present?
Lastly, and this one is liable to change, I don't believe we have any evidence to suggest Urabrask has even left New Phyrexia since his return from New Cappena. His card art for MOM seems to show him destroying something of Norn's while Realmbreaker invades behind him but his appearance in the story has him hanging out with Koth. Idk I think we'll either find out more about what he's been up to in the coming story/flavor text or there was a disconnect between the art and story.

Hi Mark. Regarding the set feeling "off", after reading the story and seeing the aesthetic on the cards, I can't help but to feel that New Cappena might have been a way better fit for a murder mystery set.
It was missing a few things, like staunch law enforcement, that the tropes needed. If you like your mystery noir, I get the appeal of New Capenna.

I hope in New Capenna, if there are Angels in the set, that Angels don't have vigilance. Because let's face it, if the Angels built a city and eventually lost it, they weren't being very vigilant. It'd fit perfectly for flavor.
That said we also don't need any more Angel creatures or any spells that make Angel tokens that have vigilance in Standard. It's a cop out being used to make white more powerful and it's frustrating enough as it is with Valkyrie Harbinger being around. We don't need another Serra Angel factory in Standard.
