so sorry to my followers for doing this again its just happened to pop up on my dash and i had to say something. its all in good fun!
i wanted to debunk some of these dots!
- neville’s boggart
this one tends to be many people’s qualms about snape. while i admit that snape was never kind to neville or any of his students i will say that it doesnt mean snape is neville’s boggart for that reason. and as for bella, well, neville’s never met her so of course hes not afraid of her, hes only ever heard stories and she’s locked away at this point. i think his whole thing is that he’s afraid of people he likes or authority figures being disappointed in him. its his fear and that makes him brave because he’s around them all the time. when remus asks neville what he thinks his boggart would be he said his nan. i think out of all his teachers hes most fearful of failing snape. that’s what makes sense to me so i dont think it really has anything to do with snape but more about neville himself.
- trevor
snape fed trevor the potion knowing that hermione helped. and as for threatening that’s a very strong word. i could just as well say he suggested neville try the potion on his pet to see if it works. snape knows that if neville were to ever make a shrinking potion and administer it to someone it had the potential to be poisonous. as do most potions. potions needs to be taken seriously and can be useful in many situations given the right ingredients. though he definitely went about it in a very mean way. his teaching methods are quite unfavorable for sure. but that’s it. he’s just mean. no animal cruelty here.
- harry
yeah i have nothing to say about this except that although he didn’t favor harry he did keep him alive all the years he was at hogwarts. no matter how many times harry got himself in trouble severus was there keeping him, well, alive.
- death eaters and lily
ive said it before on my posts. it only makes sense to me that he aligns himself with the death eaters because not only did he agree with them politically but they were also winning the war. he hated muggles after being abused by them his whole life and then some more the more he spent time with his slytherin housemates. and even if he started to realize, like draco, that this wasnt what he wanted, he couldn’t back out now could he? couldn’t rescue any muggles or muggleborns if he wanted to or else he’d be killed. lily was his breaking point. obviously. for him she’s always the exception. he risks his life asking voldemort to spare her in a way he hoped would make voldemort see reason and when that fails he risks his life and dignity again when he seeks dumbledore for help. since lily’s death he’s reformed. made up for his wrong for the rest of his life.
- sectumsempra
well, considering that severus was rather infatuated with the dark arts its not a surprise that he would create a curse like this. i’d say cruel is a touch too much though. he clearly made it for self defense: for enemies. not for fun. lets also remember that no one else knows this spell aside from him and harry and snape had never even used the spell on its intended, the marauders.
so yes snape was not by any means a good or kind person but he was certainly complex and self-serving (a rather common slytherin trait). i think hes so interesting a character but i dont think hes a horrible person (he certainly did horrible things or had horrible ideologies though), so yeah i guess youre right.
i just don't get snape defenders... like do they know you can have a fav character and still acknowledge that they were a horrible person????
